River and lake health assessment (RLHA) is an important approach to alleviating the conflict between protecting river and lake ecosystems and fostering socioeconomic development, aiming for comprehensive protection, governance, and management. Vegetation, a key component of the riparian zone, supports and maintains river and lake health (RLH) by providing a range of ecological functions. While research on riparian zone vegetation is ongoing, these studies have not yet been synthesized from the perspective of integrating RLHA with the ecological functions of riparian zone vegetation. In this paper, based on the bibliometric method, the relevant literature studies on the topics of RLHA and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing of vegetation were screened and counted, and the keywords were highlighted, respectively. Based on the connotation of RLH, this paper categorizes the indicators of RLHA into five aspects: water space: the critical area from the river and lake water body to the land in the riparian zone; water resources: the amount of water in the river and lake; water environment: the quality of water in the river and lake; water ecology:aquatic organisms in the river and lake; and water services:the function of ecosystem services in the river and lake. Based on these five aspects, this paper analyzes the key role of riparian zone vegetation in RLHA. In this paper, the key roles of riparian zone vegetation in RLHA are summarized as follows: stabilizing riverbanks, purifying water quality, regulating water temperature, providing food, replenishing groundwater, providing biological habitats, and beautifying human habitats. This paper analyzes the application of riparian zone vegetation ecological functions in RLH, summarizing the correlation between RLHA indicators and these ecological functions. Moreover, this paper analyzes the advantages of UAV remote sensing technology in the quantitative monitoring of riparian zone vegetation. This analysis is based on the high spatial and temporal resolution characteristics of UAV remote sensing technology and focuses on monitoring the ecological functions of riparian zone vegetation. On this basis, this paper summarizes the content and indicators of UAV quantitative remote sensing monitoring of riparian zone vegetation for RLHA. It covers several aspects: delineation of riparian zone extent, identification of vegetation types and distribution, the influence of vegetation on changes in the river floodplain, vegetation cover, plant diversity, and the impact of vegetation distribution on biological habitat. This paper summarizes the monitoring objects involved in monitoring riparian zones, riparian zone vegetation, river floodplains, and biological habitats, and summarizes the monitoring indicators for each category. Finally, this paper analyzes the challenges of UAV quantitative remote sensing for riparian zone vegetation at the current stage, including the limitations of UAV platforms and sensors, and the complexity of UAV remote sensing data information. This paper envisages the future application prospects of UAV quantitative remote sensing for riparian zone vegetation, including the development of hardware and software such as UAV platforms, sensors, and data technologies, as well as the development of integrated air-to-ground monitoring systems and the construction of UAV quantitative remote sensing platforms tailored to actual management applications. The riparian zone is an area where land and water are intertwined, and vegetation is rich and complexly distributed. The zone can be directly involved in ecological regulation. In order to protect the ecological environment of the riparian zone, it is necessary to monitor the distribution of vegetation. However, there are many disturbing factors in extracting riparian vegetation, the most serious of which are water bodies with similar colours to the vegetation. To overcome the influence of water bodies on vegetation extraction from UAV imagery of riparian areas, this paper proposes a novel approach that combines the marked watershed algorithm with vegetation index recognition. First, the image is pre-segmented using edge detection, and the output is further refined with the marked watershed algorithm. Background areas are classified as potential regions for vegetation distribution. Subsequently, the final vegetation distribution is extracted from these potential vegetation areas using the vegetation index. The segmentation threshold for the vegetation index is automatically determined using the OTSU algorithm. The experimental results indicate that our method, when applied to UAV aerial imagery of the riparian zone, achieves an overall accuracy of over 94%, a user accuracy of over 97%, and a producer accuracy of over 93%. Introduction: Non-perennial rivers and streams are increasingly present, in part because of climate change, even in the temperate climate. However, how the loss of connectivity and complete drying affect microphytobenthos in general and diatom communities in particular has gone mostly unstudied. Methods: With this paper, we aim to close this gap, identifying diatom biodiversity through manual digital microscopy and rbcL amplicon sequencing, to observe a) which method is better suited to it and b) how the ecotone flowpool-dry affects diatom diversity under duress. Three karstic, non-perennial rivers and streams with a gradient from natural to anthropogenically disturbed were sampled under flooding conditions and after a long and intense drought in 2022. Results: Our results show that digital microscopy shows a higher diversity and species richness than amplicon sequencing. We posit that this might be due to a reduced pool of subaerophile taxa having been sequenced and being part of the reference database. Furthermore, the effect of drying only resulted in a reduction in diversity after this drought, although the biofilm was still alive under these conditions. Discussion: To use amplicon sequencing for non-perennial river diatom diversity monitoring, the reference databases will have to be adapted to such systems, as most rivers may be subjected to drying regularly in the future. Riparian vegetation plays a major role in maintaining biodiversity and reducing the negative impact of nutrient leaching into aquatic ecosystems. However, the knowledge on the interactions between riparian vegetation and other environmental factors is still incomplete for planning sustainable riparian forest management. The aim of this study was to explore interactions between riparian forest ecosystem components along a small stream. Interactions between vegetation structure, chemical composition of soil and groundwater, as well as chemical element flows via litterfall and precipitation were studied in seven 50 m long transects located in the riparian forest of different characteristics along a 1.4 km river section in the northern part of Latvia. Our results showed that throughfall input of total nitrogen (TN) and potassium (K) was higher in transects with predominantly deciduous tree stands, but the concentration of TN in forest floor was higher in coniferous tree stands. At some soil layers, a positive correlation between organic soil carbon (OC) and the concentration of TN in groundwater was detected. The concentration of TN and nitrate-nitrogen (N-NO3–) in groundwater correlated positively with the deciduous tree basal area. The obtained results suggested that element flows are strongly dependent on tree species' composition and a comparatively small riparian area is able to provide diverse ecological conditions. The paper concentrates on seasonal and spatial variations of sub-daily water temperature dynamics in lowland agricultural streams. Temperature monitoring was carried out in 24 sampling sites distributed along the tributaries of the Wkra River during the hydrological year 2021. Statistical analysis of the obtained data documented the highest water temperature dynamics in the morning, from 5:00 to 9:00 CEST, while the lowest -- from 14:00 to 18:00 CEST. Seasonally, greater water dynamics were noted in the winter, expressed by a coefficient of variation reaching up to 100%. Spatially, the highest dynamics occurred in sites with the lowest proportion of riparian vegetation, while the lowest dynamics was related to higher catchment area. In the winter, the minimum daily values were recorded most frequently in the morning hours, while maximum values in the afternoon. A similar pattern was observed in the summer, but with much lower dispersion of the relative frequencies. It was found that in the winter, the dominant influence on temperature dynamics was exerted in the upstream catchment area, while in the summer, a negative relationship with riparian shade was marked. The findings suggest that the presence of riparian vegetation reduces diurnal dynamics of water temperature and is simultaneously extremely important in prolonging the duration of optimum fluctuation, responsible for the proper development of poikilothermic organisms. This paper explores the impacts of reconfiguration and leaf morphology on the flow downstream of a flexible foliated plant. 3D acoustic Doppler velocimetry and particle image velocimetry were used to experimentally investigate the hydrodynamic interaction between a foliated plant and the flow, testing two plants with different leaves morphology under different bulk flow velocities. The model vegetation was representative of riparian vegetation species in terms of plants hydrodynamic behavior and leaf to stem area ratio. To explore the effects of the seasonal variability of vegetation on the flow structure, leafless conditions were tested. Reconfiguration resulted in a decrease of the frontal projected area of the plants up to the 80% relative to the undeformed value. Such changes in plant frontal area markedly affected the spatial distributions of mean velocity and turbulence intensities, altering the local exchanges of momentum. At increasing reconfiguration, the different plant morphology influenced the mean and turbulent wake width. The leafless stem exhibited a rigid behavior, with the flow in the wake being comparable to that downstream of a rigid cylinder. The study revealed that the flexibility-induced reconfiguration of plants can markedly affect the local distribution of flow properties in the wake, potentially affecting transport processes at the scale of the plant and its subparts. The reservoir water level fluctuation zone (WLFZ) is a new and fragile ecosystem that is gaining attention with the construction of large and medium-sized hydropower plants. Compared to the natural riparian zone, it has a greater drop in water level, longer inundation time, more intense impact from alternating wet and dry conditions, and a wider impact on ecological security. The Jinsha River basin is located in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in China, and several world-class large-scale hydropower projects with dam heights over 100 m have been built, forming a large area of reservoir WLFZ, however, due to the short time since their construction, there are few related studies. In this paper, fixed sample plots were set up in the typical WLFZs of each large reservoir in the Jinsha River basin. In response to the problem of the precipitous terrain and poor accessibility of the Jinsha River basin, a combination of small UAV surveys and field research in July 2020 was used to draw vegetation cover maps and extract topographic data for each site, and quantitatively analyse the community composition, dominant species types, area, coverage, spatial distribution patterns and environmental factors of tolerant vegetation using spatial superposition analysis, neural network models, landscape pattern indices and typical correlation analysis. The results showed that the original drought-tolerant vegetation in the arid river valley WLFZ has evolved into amphibious herbaceous vegetation, with trees and shrubs disappearing and species composition tending to be simpler. 44 species of plants, mainly in the Asteraceae and Gramineae families, were extant, 61% of which were also reported in the Three Gorges Reservoir WLFZ. The water level variation showed convergence in the natural screening process of suitable species in the WLFZ. Moreover, even in the dry valley WLFZs, flood stress showed a more significant filtering effect on vegetation species than drought stress. The vegetation in the WLFZ showed an obvious band-like aggregated distribution along the water level elevation gradient, and the vegetation coverage along the flooding gradient is as follows: upper part of the WLFZ >> middle part > lower part, and mainly concentrated in the gentle area with slope less than 35°. Flooding stress, drought stress and soil substrate deficiency were the main limiting factors for vegetation recovery in the WLFZ. The vegetation restoration of the WLFZ should be adapted to local conditions, and the dominant role of native species should be emphasized. At the early stage of the restoration of the WLFZ, native species should be selected for artificial planting to accelerate the formation of vegetation cover, and gradually advance downwards along the gradient of water level elevation, while for areas of the WLFZ with slopes greater than 35° and large topographic relief, biological engineering measures should be used to help plant establishment, and after a certain stable cover has been formed, natural restoration should be the main focus. Riparian zones are dynamic ecosystems that form at the interface between the aquatic and terrestrial components of a landscape. They are shaped by complex interactions between the biophysical components of river systems, including hydrology, geomorphology, and vegetation. Remote sensing technology is a powerful tool useful for understanding riparian form, function, and change over time, as it allows for the continuous collection of geospatial data over large areas. This paper provides an overview of studies published from 1991 to 2021 that have used remote sensing techniques to map and understand the processes that shape riparian habitats and their ecological functions. In total, 257 articles were reviewed and organised into six main categories (physical channel properties; morphology and vegetation or field survey; canopy detection; application of vegetation and water indices; riparian vegetation; and fauna habitat assessment). The majority of studies used aerial RGB imagery for river reaches up to 100 km in length and Landsat satellite imagery for river reaches from 100 to 1000 km in length. During the recent decade, UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) have been widely used for low-cost monitoring and mapping of riverine and riparian environments. However, the transfer of RS data to managers and stakeholders for systematic monitoring as a source of decision making for and successful management of riparian zones remains one of the main challenges. Inundation events caused by hurricanes or tsunamis pose a substantial risk to the integrity of coastal infrastructure; however, their impact on the built environment can be greatly altered by natural and anthropogenic obstacles or disturbances to the flow, such as vegetation or neighboring structures. This paper investigates the impact of coastal vegetation on shoreline structural vulnerability due to wave runup loading. Using numerical simulation data, the load (base shear) and momentum flux are computed as a function of vegetation characteristics (length and density) for different excitation intensities (wave heights) at the location of a shoreline structure. This information is then used to estimate structural fragility. Motivated by recent reconnaissance data from Hurricane Matthew in 2016, emphasis is placed on the out-of-plane failure of infill masonry walls. Extension to a different structural typology, that of a reinforced concrete frame, is also discussed. Comparisons between different vegetation characteristics and the bare-earth case demonstrate the wave dissipation and reduction of structural fragility (and therefore ultimately vulnerability) achieved when vegetation is present for the investigated case-study structures. The vegetation along a river reach varies throughout a year. Seasonal vegetation affects the hydrodynamic behaviour of the river system. Accordingly, flood studies should take this temporal variation into account. This also applies to real‐time flood forecasting and control. This paper studies the impact of seasonal vegetation when considering real‐time flood control performance, based on a model predictive control (MPC) scheme. The scheme makes use of a conceptual river model to limit the computational times, as well as a reduced genetic algorithm (RGA) for the optimization of the flood control gates. The impact of seasonal vegetation on the conceptual model accuracy was analysed and a flexible data assimilation approach developed, to adjust the model predictions to different vegetation scenarios. This method can successfully improve the efficiency of a control strategy, by strongly predicting and reducing the impact of seasonal vegetation changes on river conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A number of studies about the drag force related with various vegetation configuration were also carried out and focus on determining the drag coefficients and empirical formulas. However, there must be some restriction for application in depth averaged model for flow with vegetation. When it is applied to a stream with vegetation, form drag due to vegetation is taken into account, but the shear stress is not properly described because the frictional resistance law due to bed roughness is not modified in vegetated area. Therefore, friction factor in depth-averaged scheme must be modified by the flow with vegetation. In this paper, the concept of 'bed roughness boundary layer' is proposed and analytically formulated against the vegetation density. Sensitivity analysis were also conducted under several parameters and vegetation densities. The calculated results bring the reasonable evaluation of shear stress and proposed concept will affect other many kinds aspect in fluvial process, which will be clarified successively. Background: Field margins are ecologically important to an agroecosystem as they are a source of biodiversity. They can be composed of a diverse flora which may offer resources to a wide range of insects and birds. The vegetation composition of field margins is determined by soil characteristics, management, and landscape structures. However, little is known about the effect of individual field margin components such as ditches, grass strips, shrubs and trees, and the overall margin's complexity, on the vegetation composition and its functional effect and response traits. Methods: This paper reports on the effects of field margin component typology (ditches, grass strips, shrubs, trees, and vehicle tracks) and complexity (the number of components), on the herbaceous vegetation of field margins. Forty field margins were sampled in 2016 in a 200 ha. organic mixed arable livestock farm. Results: The factor which was identified as having the most effect on vegetation composition was adjacent land-use type, which reflected the margins' management regime. However, field margin components were found to affect vegetation response and effect traits. Tree components had less grassweeds than vehicle tracks while more complex field margins also had less grassweeds than simple field margins near cropped fields, most likely due to the lower availability in light and less disturbance from vehicles. Simple grassy margins produced a high proportion of hymenoptera flowers. Discussion: These results highlight the importance of field margin components in maintaining a high diversity of vegetation typologies differing in effect traits that are relevant for the provisioning of ecosystem services, such as supporting pollen and nectar requirements of beneficial insects, as well as their importance in determining the presence of weed species that could potentially invade the cropped fields. This paper combines a new chronosequence of deglaciation from 1952 to 2015 for Glacier Blanc, French Alps, with an analysis of the proglacial area greening trend. Deglaciated landscapes are ideal natural arenas to investigate geoecological processes, and the Glacier Blanc is an interesting case as it offers a contrasted geomorphological context. The relationships between vegetation and glaciological, geomorphological and hydrological features have first been assessed by revising the existing chronosequence of deglaciation by geo-referencing 12 historical images which has allowed the production of a dense high resolution glacier outline sequence since 1952. Geomorphological and hydrological features have been mapped by photo-interpretation of historical images. The spatial distribution of vegetation and greening trends were assessed using a 2015 high resolution infra-red images and 35-years of Landsat images from 1984 to 2019. Measuring the amount of vegetation in a given area on a large scale has long been accomplished using satellite and aerial imaging systems. These methods have been very reliable in measuring vegetation coverage accurately at the top of the canopy, but their capabilities are limited when it comes to identifying green vegetation located beneath the canopy cover. Measuring the amount of urban and suburban vegetation along a street network that is partially beneath the canopy has recently been introduced with the use of Google Street View (GSV) images, made accessible by the Google Street View Image API. Analyzing green vegetation through the use of GSV images can provide a comprehensive representation of the amount of green vegetation found within geographical regions of higher population density, and it facilitates an analysis performed at the street-level. In this paper we propose a fine-tuned color based image filtering and segmentation technique and we use it to define and map an urban green environment index. We deployed this image processing method and, using GSV images as a high-resolution GIS data source, we computed and mapped the green index of Milwaukee County, a 3,082 k m 2 urban/suburban county in Wisconsin. This approach generates a high-resolution street-level vegetation estimate that may prove valuable in urban planning and management, as well as for researchers investigating the correlation between environmental factors and human health outcomes. Riparian environments are highly dynamic ecosystems that support biodiversity and numerous services and that are conditioned by anthropogenic activities and climate change. In this work, we propose an integrated methodology that combines different research approaches—field studies and numerical and analytical modeling—in order to calibrate an ecohydrological stochastic model for riparian vegetation. The model yields vegetation biomass statistics and requires hydrological, topographical, and biological data as input. The biological parameters, namely, the carrying capacity and the flood‐related decay rate, are the target of the calibration as they are related to intrinsic features of vegetation and site‐specific environmental conditions. The calibration is here performed for two bars located within the riparian zone of the Cinca River (Spain). According to our results, the flood‐related decay rate has a spatial dependence that reflects the zonation of different plant species over the study site. The carrying capacity depends on the depth of the phreatic surface, and it is adequately described by a right‐skewed curve. The calibrated model well reproduces the actual biogeography of the Cinca riparian zone. The overall percentage absolute difference between the real and the computed biomass amounts to 9.3% and 3.3% for the two bars. The model is further used to predict the future evolution of riparian vegetation in a climate‐change scenario. The results show that the change of hydrological regime forecast by future climate projections may induce dramatic reduction of vegetation biomass and strongly modify the Cinca riparian biogeography. Plain Language Summary: The riparian area is the transitional zone between a river and the land. This area hosts an elaborate ecosystem that supports high‐biodiversity and several natural and anthropic services. The physical processes governing the riparian area are so complex and interdependent that researchers have so far developed different scientific approaches to study them. In this paper, we combine some of these approaches (numeric, mathematical modeling, and field observations) in a unique methodology. The aim is to eventually provide a theoretical model for the riparian vegetation calibrated onto real data. The calibration regards the quantitative characterization of vegetation response to flood and drought. The calibrated model can consequently be used to study the spatial distribution of riparian vegetation in present and future climate scenarios. A rich macroflora has been collected from Karpatian (late early Miocene) layers of the Mecsek Mts during recent decades. The bulk of the fossil assemblage consists of leaves and also fruits of angiosperms. Among the more than a hundred taxa, several endemic species were described: Leguminocarpum mecsekense Andreánszky, Ailanthus mecsekensis Hably, Nyssa gyoergyi sp. nov., Nyssa gergoei sp. nov., Nyssa sp. 1, Clematis csabae sp. nov., Gordonia sp. and Carpolithes gergoei Hably et Erdei sp. nov. Many taxa were last recorded in the Carpathian Basin, e.g. Cedrelospermum, Ziziphus. Other taxa appeared in this flora, e.g. Quercus kubinyii, Podocarpium podocarpum, Liquidambar europaea and Populus populina, and later became dominant in the middle Miocene (Sarmatian) floras or even in the late Miocene (Pannonian) floras. Four main vegetation types were determined. The most significant types are subxerophytic vegetation showing high diversity, swamp vegetation, riparian vegetation, and a vegetation type growing in habitats with higher rainfall. Thermophilous flora elements are dominant in the assemblage, although "arctotertiary" species also appear. The floristic character of the flora supports the results of an earlier quantitative climate analysis of the Magyaregregy flora, according to which mean annual temperature was 15.6-16.6°C and coldest-month and warmest-month temperatures were 5-6.2°C and 24.7-27.9°C, respectively. Riparian vegetation plays an important role in providing energy to small watercourses and maintaining ecological processes through organic matter input and together with hydrological and geomorphological watercourse characteristics influence on fish assemblages. The goal of this paper was partitioning and quantifying the influence of riparian zone (type of riverbank substrate, bank slope, type of riparian vegetation cover and percentage of riparian vegetation cover on the main channel), physical habitat (stream channel width and depth, type of substrate and aquatic habitat in channel, water velocity and organic matter), water quality (turbidity, temperature, conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll concentration) and spatial variables (linear distances between sampled points) on fish assemblages (richness and abundance per species) in headwater streams of the Upper Paraná River basin, Central Brazil. For this purpose, it was performed a variation partitioning analysis between riparian, physical habitat, water and spatial variables sets and a Redundancy Analysis to quantify the influence of variables on the fish assemblages. Understanding how landscape structure and riparian vegetation impact bee diversity is important for maintaining pollination service in urban areas. We explored spatial and temporal variation of bee communities across land use types in a riparian zone of a mountainous megacity in 2018 and 2022, examined whether riparian vegetation functions as corridors that maintain gene flow of bee populations, and mapped pollination supply at the landscape scale.Pielou index was higher in 2018 than in 2022, while no significant differences in abundance, Shannon and richness index were observed. The abundance of bees and the Shannon index were significantly and positively correlated with the abundance of flowers on grassland and forested land, respectively, while both were negatively correlated with the area of the building.The genetic differentiation of the bee communities in the riparian zone was lower than those outside, indicating the function of the riparian vegetation corridor. The pollination supply varied significantly between regions, with medium to high degree of pollination supply distributed primarily in residual habitats and the surrounding urban green spaces, while low degree in the remaining areas.Our results stress the importance of maintaining the continuity of vegetation in riparian zones and increasing flower abundance, especially native plant species, for the conservation of bees in urban areas. Riparian vegetation always grows on both sides of a natural river during a dambreak event, while the river typically retains some water instead of completely drying out. The RNG k-ε turbulence model is employed to examine the evolutionary characteristics of the dam-break flow in the downstream vegetated channel. This model facilitates the analysis of water-level fluctuations, velocity distributions, and the retardation effects of vegetation on the dam-break flow by varying the initial water depth (IWD) in the downstream channel. Results indicates that as the water depth in the downstream channel increases, the dam-break wave tends to form more readily, possesses a larger amplitude, and the duration of rapid congestion in the dam-break current decreases. Hence, the surface velocity gradually declines and shows an intermittent distribution. Vegetation impedes the flow evolution in the vegetated area, an effect that diminishes progressively with increasing IWD. Plant organ biomass allocation and morphological characteristics are important functional traits. The responses of plant root, stem, and leaf traits to heterogeneous habitats in floodplain wetlands are highly important for understanding the ecological adaptation strategies of riparian plants. However, the patterns of these responses remain unclear. In a floodplain wetland in the middle reaches of the Heihe River, we studied the responses of the root, stem, and leaf morphological traits and biomass allocation of Leymus secalinus to varying habitat conditions. We measured these traits in three sample plots, delineated based on distance from the riverbank: plot I (near the riparian zone, 50–150 m from the riverbank), plot II (middle riparian zone, 200–300 m from the riverbank), and plot III (far riparian zone, 350–450 m from the riverbank). The results showed that in plot I, L. secalinus tended to have slender roots and stems and small leaves, with a biomass allocation strategy that maximized the root–shoot ratio (RSR). In plot II, L. secalinus had thick stems and moderate leaf and root patterns, and the RSR values were between those of plot I and plot III. In plot III, L. secalinus had thin and short stems and large leaves; furthermore, among the root morphological structures, plot III had the shortest Rhizome length (RL) and longest Rhizome diameter (RD), and the RSR was the lowest. Moreover, there was a significant correlation between organ biomass and leaf thickness, stem length, RD, and RL in the three habitats (p < 0.05). By balancing the biomass allocation among organs, wetland plants in floodplains balance changes in root, stem, and leaf morphological characteristics to improve their environmental adaptation. Analyzing the changes in vegetation under different factors is crucial for ecological protection in arid areas. The spatial-temporal variations of vegetation in the lower reaches of the Tarim River (LRTR) from 2000 to 2020, were analyzed using the Theil-Sen estimator and the Mann-Kendall test. The future trends of NDVI are projected to use the Hurst exponent method. The driving mechanisms of vegetation changes were analyzed using the GeoDetector method and multivariate residual analysis. The NDVI values in the LRTR significantly increased during the study period, indicating good vegetation recovery. The overall vegetation level remains poor and was primarily concentrated around the riverine areas. There is still a risk of vegetation degradation in most areas of the future LRTR. Compared to climate change, vegetation was more affected by human activities. Human activities have helped restore the riparian vegetation and prevented the degradation of vegetation far from the river. Therefore, distance from river channels is the strongest explanatory factor (q = 0.078) for vegetation changes, followed by precipitation, and temperature, while changes in slope have minimal impact on vegetation. Statistics have found that when two factors are combined, their impact on vegetation change is stronger. In the 21st century, climate change and its consequences are getting more serious. The changes in temperature and precipitation alter the run-off conditions, subsequently influencing the channel processes of rivers. The study aims to analyse the hydrological changes in a small, sub-alpine river (Rába/Raab River, Central Europe) and the bank erosional processes (1951–2024). The bank erosion was determined based on topographical maps, aerial photographs, and field (RTK–GPS) surveys. Short (2–3 days) floods were common between 1950 and 1980, and low stages occurred in 65–81% of a year. However, extreme regimes developed in the 21st century, as record-high, flash floods altered with long low stages (91–96% of a year). The bank erosion shows a cyclic temporal pattern, gradually increasing until it reaches a high value (4.1–4.9 m/y), followed by a limited erosional rate (2.2–2.8 m/y). However, the magnitude of the bank erosion is decreasing. This could be explained by (1) the lower transport capacity of the more common low stages and (2) the seasonal shift of the flood waves, which appear in the growing season when the riparian vegetation can more effectively protect the banks from erosion. Providing historical data on riparian plant biodiversity and physico‐chemical parameters of stream water in Mediterranean mountains helps to assess the effects of climate change and other human stressors on these sensitive and critical ecosystems. This database collects data from the main natural headwater streams of the Sierra Nevada (southeastern Spain), a high mountain (up to 3479 m above sea level [m asl]) recognized as a biodiversity super hotspot in the Mediterranean basin. On this mountain, rivers and landscapes depend on snowmelt water, representing an excellent scenario for evaluating global change's impacts. This dataset covers first‐ to third‐order headwater streams at 41 sites from 832 to 1997 m asl, collected from December 2006 to July 2007. Our goal is to supply information on the vegetation associated with streambanks, the essential physico‐chemical parameters of stream water, and the physiographic features of the subwatersheds. Riparian vegetation data correspond to six plots sampled at each site, including total canopy, individual number, height and DBH (diameter at breast height) in woody species, and cover percentage for herbs. Physico‐chemical parameters were measured in situ (electric conductivity, pH, dissolved O2 concentration, stream discharge) and determined in the laboratory (alkalinity, soluble reactive phosphate‐phosphorus [SRP], total phosphorus [TP], nitrate‐nitrogen [NO3−–N], ammonium‐nitrogen [NH4+–N], total nitrogen [TN]). Watershed physiographic variables comprise drainage area, minimum altitude, maximum altitude, mean slope, orientation, stream order, stream length, and land cover surface percentage. We recorded 197 plant taxa (67 species, 28 subspecies, and 2 hybrids), representing 8.4% of the Sierra Nevada vascular flora. Due to the botanical nomenclature used, the database can be linked to FloraSNevada database, contributing to Sierra Nevada (Spain) as a laboratory of global processes. This paper analyzes the five elements of vegetation: floristic composition, lifespan, life form, chorology, and species distribution of the riparian and aquatic flora of canals in the Sohag Governorate of Egypt. The riparian vegetation included 126 taxa belonging to 35 families and 95 genera. Poaceae, Fabaceae and Asteraceae were the dominant plant families (50.00% of the total number of the plant taxa). Annuals claimed 57.94% of all plant taxa, and 40.48% were perennials. Therophytes and hemicryptophytes were the predominant life forms of riparian taxa. Monoregional and pleuriregional taxa dominated the vegetation along the canals of the Sohag Governorate, both with 29 species or 23.02% of all identified taxa. Biregional taxa accounted for 20.63% of all taxa. There were 11.11% of cosmopolitan and 11.91% of indigenous taxa to the tropical areas worldwide. Plants from the Palaeotropical Kingdom constituted 8.73% of the riparian plant taxa. Plants originally distributed over the Mediterranean floristic region dominated in the canal riparian areas of the studied area, with 61 taxa or 48.41%. Lago Piccolo and Lago Grande di Monticchio lie in the collapsed caldera of the volcanic structure of Mt. Vulture (Basilicata, Italy). In over two centuries, a number of studies on their water and on their submerged and riparian vegetation, were carried out, demonstrating an interesting biodiversity. The entire lake area, which is impacted by strong tourist pressure, is part of the "Monte Vulture" Special Area of Conservation (SAC IT9210210). The aim of this paper is to review the literature studies on these lakes, in order to identify the more suitable limnological parameters to infer the history of the trophic status of the two lakes. For this reason, we assess the current ecological status of the two lakes on the basis of physical, chemical and biological analyses deriving from two recent surveys carried out in 2005-2007 and in 2015, and compare these data with sparse, but relevant, historical records, in order to assess how human impacts affected both these lakes and to understand the differences in their present trophic status. Because of its peculiar water chemistry, Lago Piccolo is resulted in good and stable ecological conditions. On the contrary, water transparency of Lago Grande came out very low in summer, while total phosphorus and nitrogen concentration are proved high, leading to the persistence of critical environmental conditions in this lake, with high algal biomass and durable algal blooms in late summer, dominated by cyanobacteria. Finally, in absence of standard protocols and seasonal samplings, the macrophyte maximum growing depth should be considered the more reliable indicator of trophic status among those available for these specific lakes, being relatively independent from sampling methods and seasonal pattern. In river research, forecasting flow velocity accurately in vegetated channels is a significant challenge. The forecasting performance of various independent and hybrid machine learning (ML) models are thus quantified for the first time in this work. Utilizing flow velocity measurements in both natural and laboratory flume experiments, we assess the efficacy of four distinct standalone machine learning techniques—Kstar, M5P, reduced error pruning tree (REPT) and random forest (RF) models. In addition, we also test for eight types of hybrid ML algorithms trained with an Additive Regression (AR) and Bagging (BA) (AR-Kstar, AR-M5P, AR-REPT, AR-RF, BA-Kstar, BA-M5P, BA-REPT and BA-RF). Findings from a comparison of their predictive capabilities, along with a sensitivity analysis of the influencing factors, indicated: (1) Vegetation height emerged as the most sensitive parameter for determining the flow velocity; (2) all ML models displayed outperforming empirical equations; (3) nearly all ML algorithms worked optimal when the model was built using all of the input parameters. Overall, the findings showed that hybrid ML algorithms outperform regular ML algorithms and empirical equations at forecasting flow velocity. AR-M5P (R2 = 0.954, R = 0.977, NSE = 0.954, MAE = 0.042, MSE = 0.003, and PBias = 1.466) turned out to be the optimal model for forecasting of flow velocity in vegetated-rivers. Riparians vegetation can improve water quality, feeding grounds, spawning grounds, nursery grounds, and shelter grounds for fish. The aim of this research is to determine the types of riparian plants, types of fish and water quality in Klampok Swamp, Senggreng Village, Malang Regency, East Java. This research was conducted using the survey method to determine the types of riparian plants, types of fish, and water quality in Klampok Swamp, Senggreng Village, Malang Regency, East Java. The data is taken from 4 stations determined by the riparian cover. The station I with 100% riparian cover, station II (70%), station III (40%), and station IV (5%). The fish obtained from the research results in Klampok Swamp are betta fish (Osphronemidae), blue panchax (Aplocheilidae), snakehead (Channidae), marble goby (Eleotridae), guppy (Poeciliidae) or million fish, tilapia and the red devil (Cichlidae), goby fish and transparent goby fish (Gobiidae). Found 14 families of riparian, with the most species being Asteraceae (7 species of cosmos). The families in all stations are Poaceae or grains and Amaranthaceae (spinach). In plant ecology and environmental remediation, the characterization of riparian plant communities and the influence of environmental factors have been widely discussed. However, the delineation of plant communities from different spatial perspectives is often overlooked, especially in hillstreams. In this study, the Lingshan River is taken as the research area, which is a quintessential hillstream and is characterized by a plethora of hydraulic structures lining its course by 20 weirs. We aim to investigate the multidimensional spatial distribution of riparian plants and their main environmental factors through plant field surveys combined with cluster analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA). The main findings are as follows: (1) In this study, a total of 104 herbaceous species were investigated, distributed among 12 families, in which Poaceae (16.67%) and Compositae (9.65%) showed significant dominance. (2) Plant community delineation was based on the complete linkage clustering. Five plant communities were classified along the longitudinal scale of the river, four plant communities were in the near-water zones, and three plant communities were in the far-water zones. (3) Riparian plant diversity and community distribution in longitudinal and lateral dimensions exhibits significant differentiation. Longitudinally, there was a significant decrease in plant diversity from upstream to downstream. Laterally, the plant biomass in the near-water zone was higher than in the far-water zone, while diversity demonstrated a reverse trend in the midstream. (4) The main environmental factors influencing plant distribution varied for different spatial dimensions. Longitudinally, the physical factor of soil is domination, particularly soil texture, which exhibits the strongest correlation with plant communities. Laterally, the chemical factor of soil is domination, such as soil organic matter and soil nitrate nitrogen content. This study enhances our understanding of the riparian area's ecology, and provides a scientific basis for plant cover restoration and ecological environment protection, and their management. Enhanced understanding of flow resistance in open channels with emergent vegetation is essential for flood management and river ecosystem restoration. The presence of vegetation can significantly alter bed resistance, leading to a challenge in accurately predicting flow discharge, water levels, sediment transport, and bed deformation. Previous studies on vegetated flows have focused on vegetation resistance, on which the impact of vegetation has been ignored or poorly estimated. This study proposes a new analytical model, built upon the momentum conservation law, to predict flow resistance to vegetated zones in a plain bed without bed forms, explicitly quantifying bed resistance and vegetation resistance in a corollary manner. The proposed model is benchmarked against five typical sets of laboratory experiments. It is demonstrated that the present model using a modified logarithmic velocity distribution performs best, whereas that assuming a uniform velocity profile considerably overestimates the vegetation resistance and neglects the effect of vegetation on bed resistance. The ratio of bed resistance to the total resistance is shown to range between 5% and 40%, and it decreases with increasing vegetation density and decreases with water depth. Therefore, bed resistance cannot be ignored when modelling shallow water flow with sparsely distributed vegetation. It is also revealed that vegetation arrangements significantly affect flow resistance, and therefore a model incorporating the effect of vegetation arrangement performs better. When there is vegetation on the beach or main channel bed, it will have a significant impact on the river channel. This study was based on physical model experiments to investigate the flow conditions of the Jinhu section of the Huaihe River estuary, revealing the influence of reed vegetation on water flow resistance. A new comprehensive roughness formula was proposed, and the predictive effectiveness of the formula was verified. The theoretical results indicate that under the condition of vegetation not being submerged, the comprehensive roughness is directly proportional to the square root of vegetation density in areas with vegetation coverage, the square root of water surface vegetation coverage, and the 2/3 power of the hydraulic radius. The bottom slope does not affect it. Under the condition of vegetation inundation, the comprehensive roughness is smaller than that under the condition of no inundation. The experimental prediction results of the influence of reeds on roughness indicate that the measured roughness values and theoretical roughness calculation values are in good agreement. Under the same operating conditions, the roughness gradually decreases with an increase in flow rate. Under the full-reed working condition, the calculated roughness value and the measured roughness value have the same trend of change, both decreasing with the increase in flow rate. The experimental prediction results of the influence of reeds on the relationship between water level and flow rate show that the roughness value of 0 increases with the increase in reed grass surface coverage rate Ki, and an increase in Ki can lead to an increase in comprehensive roughness. The two vegetation transfer parameters of $\tau $ τ (Vegetation Optical Depth,VOD) and $\omega $ ω (Omega) could vary significantly across microwave channels in terms of frequencies, polarizations, and incidence angles, and their channel-dependent characteristics have not yet been fully investigated. In this study, we investigate the channel dependence of vegetation effects on microwave emissions from soils using a higher-order vegetation radiative transfer model of Tor Vergata. Corn was selected as the subject of investigation, and a corn growth model was developed utilizing field data collected from the multifrequency and multi-angular ground-based microwave radiation experiment from the Soil Moisture Experiment in the Luan River (SMELR). Upon compilation of the simulation dataset of microwave emissions of the corn field, the effective scattering albedo across different channels were calculated using the Tor Vergata model. Results show that vertical polarization of the vegetation optical depth is more affected by incidence angle changes, while horizontal polarization exhibits lower variations in vegetation optical depth due to incidence angle adjustments. The channel dependence of vegetation optical depth can be described as the polarization dependence parameter (${C_P}$ C P ) and the frequency dependence parameter (${C_f}$ C f ). These two parameters enable the calculation of vegetation optical depth at any channel under three adjacent frequencies (L-band, C-band and X-band). The effective scattering albedo of vegetation does not vary significantly with vegetation height or angle. It primarily depends on frequency and polarization, showing an overall increasing trend with increasing frequency. The effective scattering albedo with vertical polarization is slightly higher than that with horizontal polarization at higher frequencies, while both are lower in the L-band. This investigation is helpful for understanding the vegetation effects on microwave emissions from soils, ultimately advancing the accuracy of large-scale soil moisture retrieval in vegetated areas. The Vamanapuram River Basin (VRB) is home to a diverse range of plant species, including 152 distinct species from 50 botanical families. Poaceae, Leguminosae, Araceae, and Aseraceae are the most abundant, with 13 species. Euphorbiaceae, Acanthaceae, Apocynaceae, and Rubiaceae also contribute to the biodiversity hotspots. The VRB's vegetation profile is characterized by a dynamic interplay of plant forms and ecological niches, with 74 herbs, 30 shrubs, 12 grasses, 1 liana, and 35 towering trees. The Poaceae family thrives in this environment due to hydrological factors. The sampling sites P6 and P5 exhibit high relative frequency and density, with key species like Macaranga peltata, Ficus hispida, and Swietenia macrophylla. Diversity indices like the Shannon-Wiener diversity index reaffirm the VRB's tropical forest character. Beta-diversity patterns reveal unique plant species distribution dynamics among different panchayaths, emphasizing their ecological complexities. Bend sections are ubiquitous in natural sandy river systems. This study employs Computational Fluid Dynamics–Discrete Phase Model (CFD-DPM) methodology to analyze particle transport dynamics in U-bend channel flows, focusing on the distinctions between partially vegetated (Case No.1) and non-vegetated (Case No.2) scenarios. The research aims to unravel the intricate relationships among bending channel-induced secondary flow, vegetation blockage, and particle aggregation, employing both quantitative and qualitative approaches. (I) The key findings reveal that vegetation near the inner walls of curved channels markedly diminishes the intensity of secondary circulation. This reduction in circulation intensity is observed not only within vegetated areas but also extends to adjacent non-vegetated zones. Additionally, the study identifies a close correlation between vertical vortices and particle distribution near the channel bed. While particle distribution generally aligns with the vortices' margin, dynamic patch-scale eddies near vegetation patches induce deviations, creating wave-like patterns in particle distribution. (II) The application of the Probability Density Function (PDF) provides insights into the radius-wise particle distribution. In non-vegetated channels, particle distribution is primarily influenced by secondary flow and boundary layers. In contrast, the presence of vegetation leads to a complex mixing layer, altering the particle distribution pattern and maximizing PDF values in non-vegetated free flow subzones. (III) Furthermore, the research quantifies spatial–temporal sediment heterogeneity through PDF variance. The findings demonstrate that variance in non-vegetated channels increases towards the outer wall in bending regions. Vegetation-induced turbulence causes higher variance, particularly in the mixing layer subzone, underscoring the significance of eddy size in sediment redistribution. (IV) The study of vertical concentration profiles in vegetated U-bend channels offers additional insights, while secondary flow in non-vegetated channels facilitates upward sediment transport and vegetation presence, although increasing the Turbulent Kinetic Energy (TKE), restricts channel space, and impedes secondary flow, thereby reducing vertical particle suspension. Sediment concentrations are found to be higher in the lower layers of vegetated bends, contrary to the pattern in non-vegetated bends. These findings highlight the complex interplay between vegetation, secondary flow, and sediment transport, illustrating the reduced effectiveness of secondary flow in promoting vertical particle transportation in bending channels due to the vegetation obstruction. Riparian woody plant communities, including shrubs and trees, are essential for maintaining biodiversity, protecting against floods, reducing erosion, and transporting nutrients. However, these habitats are greatly threatened by human activities, particularly agricultural land acquisition, and the introduction of invasive species. This study examined species diversity and interspecific association in riparian woody plant communities along rivers in the Romanian Carpathians. The study focused on communities of Salix purpurea, S. alba, and Hippophaë rhamnoides in mountain regions, with varying sampling efforts at different sites for each species. A total of 174 plant species were found, predominantly herbaceous (77.9%), followed by trees (11.6%) and shrubs (10.5%). While S. alba and S. purpurea communities show high species richness and abundance, S. alba has slightly higher diversity (H′ ≈ 2.23, SD = 0.28) than S. purpurea (H′ ≈ 1.69, SD = 0.42). Contrarily, significant differences exist between H. rhamnoides and S. alba communities in species richness (p =.007) and Shannon diversity (p =.004). PCA analysis elaborated on distinct distribution patterns of plant associations within habitats S. purpurea community, H. rhamnoides community, and S. alba community. Four invasive species (Oenothera biennis L. and Oxalis stricta L. in S. alba communities, Reynoutria sachalinensis Nakai in both S. purpurea and H. rhamnoides communities, and Erigeron canadensis L. in H. rhamnoides communities) were identified, as requiring conservation efforts. Hemicryptophytes dominate species richness, while microphanerophytes and megaphanerophytes significantly contribute to plant abundance. H. rhamnoides formed Hippophaë rhamnoides dunes (2160) Natura 2000 habitat, while S. alba created galleries within the 92A0 Salix alba and Populus alba habitat. In conclusion, the findings from this study highlight the importance of preserving riparian habitats because their value goes beyond local or regional considerations and extends to the global scale due to their unique characteristics. Riparian vegetation performs an important and irreplaceable role in the countryside. The paper deals with the stabilizing effect of herbal communities on the banks of watercourse Breznický potok in geomorphological unit Kremnické vrchy (Central Slovakia). We analyzed the relationships between the vegetation coverage VEG % (%) and factor of stability (Fs) which was computed according to Bank Stability and Toe Erosion Model (BSTEM) on experimental banks. We also analyzed the relationships between VEG % (%) and BEHI (Bank Erosion Hazard Index). The value of aditional cohesion cr was calculated by RipRoot Model in BSTEM for present vegetation. The research was conducted on 20 experimental sections with 20 experimental profiles with the presented vegetation coverage (%) based on the detected percentage of grass and herbaceous on the riparian banks. The calculated results of Fs were evaluated in accordance with existing erosion damages of experimental banks which were determined in the terrain through visual classification. Research has shown a strong correlation between vegetation cover of bank VEG % and a stability factor Fs (correlation coefficient Iyx = 0.976) and between VEG % and BEHI (Iyx = 0.956). Cross-valley variation in mountain stream valleys is typically seen on a scale of meters, while variation up- and down-valley may be measured in kilometers. As a result, environmental factors at transverse scale (varying within a cross section) and at longitudinal scale (varying between cross sections) impose different patterns on vegetation. This paper compares these scale influences on the composition of woody riparian vegetation in southern California. Using cover data from 37 valley cross sections in the Transverse Ranges, and dividing these into four-meter segments, I determine segment values for the longitudinal-scale variables of elevation, years since burning, aspect, valley width and lithology, and for the transverse-scale variables of water-table depth, unit stream power (for the 20-year flood), and substrate particle size. The influence of variables at these contrasting scales on the vegetation composition are compared using detrended correspondence analysis, principal components analysis, multiple regression, and analysis of variance. The results show that transverse- and longitudinal-scale variables have significant influences on the vegetation, though neither scale is dominat. All of which suggests that the complex mosaic of riparian vegetation in this environment reflects the coincidence of environmental relationships operating in different directions on contrasting scales. The investigation into trade-offs among plant functional traits sheds light on how plants strategically balance growth and survival when facing environmental stress. This study sought to evaluate whether trade-offs observed at both community and individual species levels could indicate adaptive fitness across an intensity of flooding intensity. The study was conducted at 25 sampling sites spanning approximately 600 km along the riparian zone in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, China. The findings revealed that, along the flooding gradient, the overall riparian community did not exhibit significant trade-offs between leaf and root traits. Examining three broadly distributed dominant species (Cynodon dactylon, Xanthium strumarium, and Abutilon theophrasti), perennial plants showed pronounced trade-offs under low flooding intensity, while annuals exhibited trade-offs under moderate and low flooding intensity. The trade-offs were evident in traits related to nitrogen-carbon resources, such as specific leaf area, root tissue density, and photosynthetic rate. However, under strong flooding intensity, the relationship between leaf and root traits of the species studied was decoupled. Furthermore, the study identified a significant correlation between soil nitrogen and the trade-off traits under moderate and low flooding intensity. Integrating results from the CSR (Competitors, Stress-tolerators, Ruderals) strategy model, species niche breath analysis, and nitrogen-regulated trade-off, the study revealed that, in the face of high flooding intensity, perennial species (C. dactylon) adopts an S-strategy, demonstrating tolerance through a conservative resource allocation that decouples leaf-root coordination. Annual species (X. strumarium and A. theophrasti), on the other hand, exhibit niche specialization along the flooding gradient, employing distinct strategies (R- and C-strategy). As flooding stress diminishes and soil nitrogen level decreases, plant strategies tend to shift towards an R-strategy with a competition for reduced N resources. In conclusion, the study highlighted the pivotal roles of soil nitrogen and flooding intensity acting as the dual determinants of species growth and tolerance. These dynamics of growth-tolerance balance were evident in the diverse trade-offs between leaf and root traits of individual plant species with different life histories, underscoring the array of adaptive strategies employed by riparian plants across the flooding intensity gradient. Plants in riparian areas are well known for their beneficial functions such as providing biodiverse habitats, maintaining water quality, and stabilizing streambanks. However, riparian plants are declining in semi-arid environments due to long-term drought, a decline in groundwater table, and an increase in soil salinity. A new technique using clinoptilolite zeolite (CZ) as a wicking material with minimum artificial irrigation to grow desert willow [Chilopsis linearis (Cav.) Sweet] under field conditions is introduced; desert willow is native to riparian regions of the southwestern United States. For this study's experiment, desert willow seedlings were planted in boreholes filled with clinoptilolite zeolite (CZ) as a substrate and in situ riparian sandy loam soil (RS) as a control. The boreholes extended to the groundwater table at two distinctive depths, shallow (avg. depth = 1.21 m) and deep (avg. depth = 2.14 m). The plants' viability was then assessed by measuring their midday water potential (Ψmd) as an indicator of water stress. There was no significant difference in Ψmd (p > 0.05) between the plants grown in CZ and RS (mean Ψmd = −0.91 vs. −0.81 MPa) where the groundwater was shallow and a significant difference (mean Ψmd = −0.75 vs. −2.03 MPa) where the groundwater was deep. The proposed method is promising as an alternative method for growing desert willow or other plants for riparian rehabilitation with no artificial irrigation. Exploring the effects of environmental factors and plant physiological processes on plant nutrient stoichiometry is of great significance to understanding how wetland vegetation distributes and maintains function. However, we have a limited understanding of how the combination of plant communities and seasonality with soil physicochemical properties affects nutrient stoichiometry in wetland plants. In this study, we examined these factors in Carex thunbergii and soil across four types of plant communities dominant in the riparian zone of Shengjin Lake during the non−flooding periods of December 2020 and March 2021. In winter, the total foliar C, N, and P concentrations decreased along with an increase in plant coverage, which did not differ in spring. The C, N, C: P, and N: P of foliage significantly increased over the season, while soil C, N, C: P, and N: P significantly decreased over the season. Both in winter and spring, soil C and soil N decreased along with the increase of plant coverage. Our results suggest that both plant community and soil physicochemical properties have a significant influence on plant nutrient stoichiometry. Low-order streams and riparian wetlands are important contributors to the drainage network in the landscape. However, there has been little research into the nature of these ecosystems in Brazil. Our estimates show that riparian wetlands of low-order streams and other small associated wetlands cover at least 25% of the forested part of the Amazon basin and about 10% of the Cerrado region. Information on the semi-arid Caatinga is lacking, but ~ 3% of the area may be occupied by riparian wetlands and other small wetland types, many of which are periodically dry. Riparian vegetation includes a very large richness in tree species. The amount and species richness of herbaceous plants depend on light availability. In-streams of the semi-arid region of Brazil, hydrophytes are restricted by unpredictable flash floods and periodic drought. Aquatic food webs are largely based on the organic matter produced by the riparian vegetation. Large-scale agriculture and cattle ranching pose a serious threat to riparian wetlands, their biodiversity, and their function as a buffer in the hydrological cycle of the landscape. Across many upland environments, soils are thin and plant roots extend into fractured and weathered bedrock where moisture and nutrients can be obtained. Root water extraction from unsaturated weathered bedrock is widespread and, in many environments, can explain gradients in vegetation community composition, transpiration, and plant sensitivity to climate. Despite increasing recognition of its importance, the "rock moisture" reservoir is rarely incorporated into vegetation and Earth system models. Here, we address this weakness in a widely used dynamic global vegetation model (DGVM; LPJ-GUESS). First, we use a water flux-tracking deficit approach to more accurately parameterize plant-accessible water storage capacity across the contiguous United States, which critically includes the water in bedrock below depths typically prescribed by soil databases. Secondly, we exploit field-based knowledge of contrasting plant-available water storage capacity in weathered bedrock across two bedrock types in the Northern California Coast Ranges as a detailed case study. For the case study in Northern California, climate and soil water storage capacity are similar at the two study areas, but the site with thick weathered bedrock and ample rock moisture supports a temperate mixed broadleaf–needleleaf evergreen forest, whereas the site with thin weathered bedrock and limited rock moisture supports an oak savanna. The distinct biomes, seasonality and magnitude of transpiration and primary productivity, and baseflow magnitudes only emerge from the DGVM when a new and simple subsurface storage structure and hydrology scheme is parameterized with storage capacities extending beyond the soil into the bedrock. Across the contiguous United States, the updated hydrology and subsurface storage improve annual evapotranspiration estimates as compared to satellite-derived products, particularly in seasonally dry regions. Specifically, the updated hydrology and subsurface storage allow for enhanced evapotranspiration through the dry season that better matches actual evapotranspiration patterns. While we made changes to both the subsurface water storage capacity and the hydrology, the most important impacts on model performance derive from changes to the subsurface water storage capacity. Our findings highlight the importance of rock moisture in explaining and predicting vegetation structure and function, particularly in seasonally dry climates. Stabilization of riverbanks by vegetation has long been considered necessary to sustain single-thread meandering rivers. However, observation of active meandering in modern barren landscapes challenges this assumption. Here, we investigate a globally distributed set of modern meandering rivers with varying riparian vegetation densities, using satellite imagery and statistical analyses of meander-form descriptors and migration rates. We show that vegetation enhances the coefficient of proportionality between channel curvature and migration rates at low curvatures, and that this effect wanes in curvier channels irrespective of vegetation density. By stabilizing low-curvature reaches and allowing meanders to gain sinuosity as channels migrate laterally, vegetation quantifiably affects river morphodynamics. Any causality between denser vegetation and higher meander sinuosity, however, cannot be inferred owing to more frequent avulsions in modern non-vegetated environments. By illustrating how vegetation affects channel mobility and floodplain reworking, our findings have implications for assessing carbon stocks and fluxes in river floodplains. Riparian vegetation densities critically mediate the morphodynamics of meandering rivers: plants slow the rate at which channels move laterally and reinforce the key, first-order control that curvature exerts on meander planform evolution. Background: The impact of changing land-use patterns and associated anthropogenic threats on scale-dependent habitat use of semi-aquatic mustelids in scent-marking and social behaviour can provide important insights into the habitat ecology of smooth-coated otters (Lutrogale perspicillata). Methods: We sampled 180 stream segments (100–400 m) as spatial replicates of 60 1-km2 sites to record indirect evidence (i.e. spraints and mass latrine sites) and group sizes of smooth-coated otters along the Tungabhadra Otter Conservation Reserve (TOCR) during the dry season. To quantify habitat, we recorded stream characteristics, riparian vegetation, and anthropogenic disturbances at the local scale, and hydro-environmental characteristics and land uses at the landscape scale. Using Markovian-chain detection and occupancy models, we assessed the multi-scale habitat use of otters in their selection of suitable areas for scent-marking based on repeated presence-absence data on spraint/latrine locations along the TOCR. We further used linear regression techniques to explore relationships between the number of individuals in smooth-coated otter group and hydro-environmental characteristics, spraint/latrine encounter rate, anthropogenic pressure, land cover, topography, and vegetation. Results: At the local scale, the probability of spraint deposition and group size decreased with anthropogenic disturbance while the probability of spraint detections decreased with grass cover. At the landscape scale, the probability of otter site use for spraint deposition and group sizes increased in southeast flowing streams. Spraint deposition increased with the proportion of sugarcane fields, whereas in contrast, group size decreased with proportion of sugarcane fields. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the first empirical evidence on multi-scale habitat use of a southern Indian population of smooth-coated otters in an inland freshwater ecosystem surrounded by the scrub jungle–agriculture matrix. We suggest that habitat models built from analytical approaches that account for correlated detections can avoid biased predictions when estimating occupancy and detection probability of semi-aquatic or riparian mammal communities with linear distributions. Our findings indicate that human activity can impose constraints on the choice of sites used for spraint deposition and preliminary patterns in otter groups.
