This study, conducted at a major western Canadian university, examined the relation between the academic growth and development of dental students and perceived control, a personalogical variable; and academic and social institutional integration variables. Two questionnaires with an academic focus were administered to 67 students. The theoretical model developed contained three perceived control variables, two measures to evaluate academic goals and career commitment, seven measures of academic integration, three measures of social integration, and one measure of academic outcome. Results indicated that students who assumed personal responsibility for their academic performance reported more academic growth and development, that students more actively involved in the learning process and more stimulated academically reported higher levels of academic growth, and that favorable interactions with peers positively affected academic growth. Results support the collective importance of the perceived control variable, which in combination with academic and social integration variables contributed substantially and positively to students' reported academic growth. This paper reports on an analyis of data from a novel "Peer Instruction" application, named DALITE. The Peer Instruction paradigm is well suited to take advantage of peer-input in web-based learning environments. DALITE implements an asynchronous instantiation of peer instruction: after submitting their answer to a multiple-choice question, students are asked to write a rationale for their choice. Then, they can compare their answer to other students' answers, and are asked to choose the best peer-submitted rationale among those displayed. We engaged in an analysis of student behaviour and learning outcomes in the DALITE learning environment. Specifically, we focus our investigation on the relationship between student proficiency, how students change their answers after reading each others' writings, and the peer-votes they earn in DALITE. Key results include: i) peer-votes earned is a significant predictor of success in the course; ii) there are no significant differences between strong and weak students in how often they switch from the correct answer to a wrong answer after consulting peer-rationales, or vice versa; iii) even though males outscore females in conceptual physics questions, females earn as many votes from their peers as males do for the content they produce when justifying their answer choices. In this study we surveyed students in a mid-sized university in Ontario, Canada to explore various aspects associated with their use of computer-based applications. For the purpose of analysis, the computer applications under study were categorized according to the Human-Computer-Human Interaction (HCHI) model of Desjardins (2005) in which interactions between users and digital technology are categorized into four classes of interaction, namely, Technical Interactions (interactions with the digital devices themselves), Social Interactions (interactions with other users through digital devices), Informational Interactions (interactions with information through digital devices), and Computational Interactions (interactions with data processing software through digital devices). The survey attempted to assess the following four aspects of computer application use (in the context of the HCHI model): importance, purpose, frequency, and confidence. In this paper we report on preliminary findings regarding the purpose and importance students attributed to the applications under study. Frequency and confidence studies were reported elsewhere--Partosoedarso, DiGiuseppe, vanOostveen, & Desjardins (2013). Preliminary findings indicate that, in general, students in this study tended to engage in technical, social, and informational interactions primarily for personal purposes and computational interactions for school purposes. In terms of importance, students ascribed the greatest importance to social interactions, followed by technical, informational, and computational interactions, in that order. Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) provides second language (L2) learners and teachers with resources to enhance the learning experience, including its anytime, anywhere accessibility (Traxler, 2007). However, factors such as lack of confidence with technology (Son, 2014) and time limitations (Godwin-Jones, 2015) may prevent teachers from implementing MALL successfully. To better understand the barriers to using MALL, this pilot study investigated the perspectives of 21 L2 English teachers at secondary schools and colleges in Quebec (Canada). An online questionnaire, requiring 15-30 minutes to complete, consisted of six-point Likert scales, short answers, multiple-choice questions, and probed teachers' current practices, willingness to engage with different tools, and factors influencing their implementation (e.g. time restraints, lack of training). Results suggest that while most language teachers appear to be open to engaging their students in MALL, limitations and concerns regarding distractions, cheating, school policy, class disruption, and time pressures remain. Does English proficiency affect participation in online discussion? This study polled 14 students from a postgraduate online course that require online discussion. The students are divided into groups according to their home language spoken and self-assessed English proficiency, and measure against their participation level in the required discussion forums. It is found that students who speak English at home posts more and longer, and students who rate themselves proficient in English post more and longer. However, literature suggests that factors affecting participation are multifaceted. Although the current findings suggest a significant correlation between English proficiency and participation level, more work is required to understand the mechanism of the effects of language proficiency in online discussion participation. This study modifies and expands on earlier research in an effort to incorporate an examination of consultant's sex as an instrumental dimension in determining children's and adolescents' consultant preferences. It was hypothesized that: (1) children would prefer same-sex consultants, and this preference would continue for female adolescents; (2) if sex preferences reflected perceived differences in socialization functions, adolescent males would not demonstrate a same-sex bias; (3) peer preferences would increase with age; and (4) although children's preference for adult consultants would decrease with age, adults would remain viable consultants. Subjects, 241 males and females at ages 8, 11, 14, and 17 years in Toronto, Ontario, completed questionnaires that described five hypothetical problem situations. Subjects rated their preferences for 12 categories of consultants. The categories crossed three dimensions: age (peer, three years older, and adult); familiarity (familiar versus expert); and sex. As predicted, results revealed that male and female children preferred same-sex consultants, and this preference continued for adolescent females, but not males. Other findings demonstrated the importance of peer expert consultants and indicated that consultants who were three years older, while valued, are never the most preferred category. The findings address the importance of peer counseling programs and stress the need for female practitioners for female clients. (GLR)

A procedure for predicting categorical outcomes using categorical predictor variables was described by Moonan. This paper describes a related technique which uses prior probabilities, updated by joint likelihoods, as classification criteria. The procedure differs from Moonan's in that the outcome having the greatest posterior probability is selected as the prediction regardless of misclassification cost. It also differs in method of screening and weighting the predictor variables, and treats the problem of small-sample bias. Applications, to date, are in the analysis and use of questionnaire responses to predict categorical outcomes, namely, voluntary, academic, and military attrition from a Service College. Classification efficiency appears to be comparable to that of the Moonan technique. (Author)
