Accurately determining if the sample parameters from a natural gas pipeline's sampling system reflect the fluid characteristics of the main pipe has been a significant industry concern for many years. In this paper, samples of natural gas in a horizontal pipeline are investigated. CFD is used in this work and the turbulence is considered in the simulation. Firstly, the critical diameter for particles affected by gravity within such pipeline is determined. And then, the effects of the operation pressure and velocity of sampling branches on sample parameters, and the influence of particle density on these sample parameters, are analyzed. Finally, four different structures of sample branches for natural gas in a horizontal pipeline are compared. It is found that 100 μm is the critical diameter at which particles are affected by gravity; the operating pressure of the sampling branch has a significant impact on the particle mass concentration. The particle density has little impact on the sampling system. Overall, the design of the sampling branches does not cause significant sampling errors. This study provides guidance for optimal sampling in existing natural gas pipelines and enables effective monitoring of particle impurity content and properties in natural gas. An uneven mixing of hydrogen-blended natural gas will lead to hydrogen embrittlement in distribution pipelines, thereby affecting the quality of terminal gas, and thus highlighting the importance of ensuring the uniformity of hydrogen and natural gas mixing. In this study, FLUENT software was used to simulate three different hydrogen filling modes, namely, T-tube, bending-tube, and static mixer, and the mechanisms underlying the mixing of hydrogen and natural gas under different filling modes were analyzed. In addition, we assessed the influences of gas velocity, hydrogen blending ratio, and mixer length and blade angle on the mixing effects of a static mixer. The results revealed that among the three mixing methods assessed, the static mixer has the best overall mixing effect. Increasing gas velocity was found to have no significant effect on the mixing of hydrogen and natural gas. With an increase of hydrogen blending ratio, the mixing uniformity of hydrogen and natural gas increased from 99.49% to 99.95%, whereas there was an increase from 84.12% to 99.05% when the length of static mixer was increased, and an increase from 59.53% to 99.78% in response to an increase in blade angle. Our findings in this study can provide a methodological reference for increasing the mixing uniformity of hydrogen and natural gas in hydrogen-blended natural gas pipeline networks, and thereby contribute to the safe and rapid development of the hydrogen energy industry. To investigate the leakage characteristics of pure hydrogen and hydrogen-blended natural gas in medium- and low-pressure buried pipelines, this study establishes a three-dimensional leakage model based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The leakage characteristics in terms of pressure, velocity, and concentration distribution are obtained, and the effects of operational parameters, ground hardening degree, and leakage parameters on hydrogen diffusion characteristics are analyzed. The results show that the first dangerous time (FDT) for hydrogen leakage is substantially shorter than for natural gas, emphasizing the need for timely leak detection and response. Increasing the hydrogen blending ratio accelerates the diffusion process and decreases the FDT, posing greater risks for pipeline safety. The influence of soil hardening on gas diffusion is also examined, revealing that harder soils can restrict gas dispersion, thereby increasing localized concentrations. Additionally, the relationship between gas leakage time and distance is determined, aiding in the optimal placement of gas sensors and prediction of leakage timing. To ensure the safe operation of hydrogen-blended natural gas pipelines, practical recommendations include optimizing pipeline operating conditions, improving leak detection systems, increasing pipeline burial depth, and selecting materials with higher resistance to hydrogen embrittlement. The use of existing natural gas pipelines for the transport of hydrogen/natural gas mixtures can achieve large-scale, long-distance and low-cost hydrogen transportation. A jet fire induced by the leakage of high-pressure pure hydrogen and hydrogen-blended natural gas pipelines may pose a severe threat to life and property. Based on the Abel–Nobel equation of state and a notional nozzle model, an equivalent pipe leakage model is established to simulate high-pressure pipeline gas leakage jet fire accidents. Large-scale high-pressure hydrogen and natural gas/hydrogen mixture jet fires are simulated, showing the jet impingement process and obtaining an accurate and effective simulation framework. This framework is validated by comparing the simulated and experimental measured results of flame height, flame appearance and thermal radiation. Several combustion models are compared, and the simulated data show that the non-premixed chemical equilibrium combustion model is superior to other combustion models. The influence of the pipe pressure and the hydrogen blending ratio on the consequences of natural gas/hydrogen mixture pipeline leakage jet fire accidents is explored. It is found that when the hydrogen blending ratio is lower than 22%, the increase in the hydrogen blending ratio has little effect on the decrease in the thermal radiation hazard distance. The excavation and maintenance of buried natural gas pipelines can lead to deformation and stress redistribution of the pipelines and even cause secondary damage to the pipes with issues. To clarify the impact of excavation unloading on buried pipelines, this study established a finite element three-dimensional pipe-soil model, investigated the mechanical response of pipelines under layered excavation and evaluated various parameters impacting the response. The parameters analyzed include the diameter-thickness ratio of the pipe, excavation length and width, thickness of top covering soil, elastic modulus of soil, specific weight of soil and initial displacement of the pipeline. The study results showed that the pipeline bulges upwards during excavation unloading, the pipe top in the middle is under tension, and the bottom of the pipe is under compression. Therefore, the axial stress and vertical displacement both increase first and then decrease, and they are distributed symmetrically along the pipeline axis; excavating the initially compressed pipeline leads to high strain areas in the pipeline and even local buckling. The response to slope excavation is more pronounced than that to straight trench excavation; the additional response of the pipeline increases with the increase of diameter-thickness ratio, excavation width, thickness of pipe top covering soil and specific weight of soil, but it decreases with the increasing soil elastic modulus. The additional response is closely related to excavation length and the initial displacement. The use of hydrogen-blended natural gas presents an efficacious pathway toward the rapid, large-scale implementation of hydrogen energy, with pipeline transportation being the principal method of conveyance. However, pipeline materials are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement in high-pressure hydrogen environments. Natural gas contains various impurity gases that can either exacerbate or mitigate sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement. In this study, we analyzed the mechanisms through which multiple impurity gases could affect the hydrogen embrittlement behavior of pipeline steel. We examined the effects of O2 and CO2 on the hydrogen embrittlement behavior of L360 pipeline steel through a series of fatigue crack growth tests conducted in various environments. We analyzed the fracture surfaces and assessed the fracture mechanisms involved. We discovered that CO2 promoted the hydrogen embrittlement of the material, whereas O2 inhibited it. O2 mitigated the enhancing effect of CO2 when both gases were mixed with hydrogen. As the fatigue crack growth rate increased, the influence of impurity gases on the hydrogen embrittlement of the material diminished. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the context of carbon neutrality and carbon peaking, in order to achieve low carbon emissions and promote the efficient utilization of wind energy, hydrogen energy as an important energy carrier is proposed to mix hydrogen and natural gas to form hydrogen-enriched compressed natural gas (HCNG). It is also injected into the natural gas pipeline network to achieve the transmission and utilization of hydrogen energy. At the same time, the participation of demand response is considered, the load's peak and trough periods are adjusted, and the large-scale consumption of renewable energy and the reduction in carbon emissions are achieved. First of all, a fine model of hydrogen production and hydrogen use equipment is established to analyze the impact of adding hydrogen mixing on the economy and the low-carbon property of the system. With green certificates and demand response, the utilization rate of hydrogen energy is improved to further explore the energy utilization rate and emission reduction capacity of the system. Secondly, on the basis of modeling, the optimal scheduling strategy is proposed with the sum of energy purchase cost, equipment operation cost, carbon emission cost, wind curtailment cost, and green certificate income as the lowest objective function. Considering the constraints such as hydrogen blending ratio and flexible load ratio of the pipeline network, a low-carbon economic scheduling model of hydrogen mixed natural gas was established. The model was linearized and solved by using MATLAB 2021a and CPLEX solver. By comparing different scenarios, the superiority of the model and the effectiveness of the strategy are verified. Natural gas is known as a widely used energy source in residential, business and industrial areas. During the transportation of natural gas by pipelines, accidents occur due to various reasons, which can also lead to gas output. These accidents are events that have the potential to pose important risks in terms of life and property safety, particularly in urban areas and surrounding of pipeline routings. In this study, accident scenarios were generated based on a natural gas distribution pipeline fire that occurred in Istanbul (NW Türkiye) on 28 April 2020 and the impact areas of the jet fire were calculated using the ALOHA program. The effects of source release factors (i.e., pipe length and diameter) and atmospheric conditions (i.e., wind speed, cloud cover, air temperature and relative humidity) on the thermal radiation threat distances associated with jet fire were calculated for the current and worst scenarios. As a result, it was found that pipe length and diameter have a significant effect on threat distances. In addition to the role of the synoptic circulation mechanism on the jet fire for the selected episodic event (position of low/high pressure centers), local atmospheric conditions also have an effect on the threat distance. From the modeling analysis, significant impact of wind speed, air temperature and relative humidity values on the threat distances were found. In the worst scenario, if there were strong northeasterly winds reaching 30.9 m per hour at the time of the jet fire, the threat distances would have been 21 m (red), 28 m (orange) and 42 m (yellow). This case shows that if a natural gas jet fire occurs under the influence of strong northeasterly winds (passing over the Black Sea without encountering any topographic obstacles), poisonous gas will be transported to long distances in a short time and will negatively affect social life and economy. This study explores enhancing the resilience of electric and natural gas networks against extreme events like windstorms and wildfires by integrating parts of the electric power transmissions into the natural gas pipeline network, which is less vulnerable. We propose a novel integrated energy system planning strategy that can enhance the systems' ability to respond to such events. Our strategy unfolds in two stages. Initially, we devise expansion strategies for the interdependent networks through a detailed tri-level planning model, including transmission, generation, and market dynamics within a deregulated electricity market setting, formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem. Subsequently, we assess the impact of extreme events through worst-case scenarios, applying previously determined network configurations. The study of hydrate phase equilibrium is crucial for ensuring the safety of natural gas pipeline transportation and the process of hydrate recovery. While scientists typically focus on the chemical potential of hydrates, the role of gas solubility in hydrate phase equilibrium remains unclear, and this study fills this gap. This work investigated the solubility of gas at the equilibrium point of the hydrate phase through model calculations. Additionally, a new model of hydrate phase equilibrium is established based on the relationship between solubility. Firstly, a solubility model based on gas-liquid equilibrium theory showed higher prediction accuracy in comparison to the PR equation and Duan model and was then used to calculate gas solubility under hydrate phase equilibrium conditions. Afterwards, a novel model was developed to predict hydrate equilibrium state based on the relationship between gas solubility and hydrate phase equilibrium temperature, and it was further compared with the Chen-Guo model and CSMGem in terms of prediction accuracy under pure water and brine settings. The results showed: (a) The calculation deviation of the solubility model was 0.7-8.7% in pure water settings and 2.6-11.7% in brine settings; (b) A strong linear correlation between the phase equilibrium temperature of hydrates and gas solubility was also found; (c) This proposed model achieved over 10 times the accuracy of the Chen-Guo model and the CSMGem in predicting the phase equilibrium state of N2 and CO2 hydrates, and 3-10 times higher accuracy than that of the Chen-Guo model and CSMGem in brine. This data report focuses on the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of natural gas flow condensation in spiral tubes. The report highlights the challenges posed by the complex heat transfer characteristics and phase change of natural gas condensation in spiral-wounded heat exchangers. It discusses the need for a specific condensation model for natural gas and describes the simulation methods used to determine heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops. The study reveals that the temperature of natural gas decreases as condensation progresses, and the heat transfer coefficient peaks near a vapor quality of 0.3. The authors recommend incorporating greater heat transfer area in regions of high vapor quality and below a vapor quality of 0.3 when designing spiral wound tube heat exchangers, as well as reducing the spiral winding radius to potentially improve heat transfer performance. The development of hydrogen-blended natural gas (HBNG) increases the risk of gas transportation and presents challenges for pipeline security in utility tunnels. The objective of this study is to investigate the diffusion properties of HBNG in utility tunnels and evaluate the effectiveness of various ventilation mechanisms. The numerical simulation software Fluent 2023 R1 is applied to simulate and analyze the leakage of small holes in a HBNG pipeline in the natural gas compartment. By examining the leaking behavior of HBNG through small holes in different circumstances, we aimed to identify the most unfavorable operational situation for leakage. Subsequently, we analyzed the ventilation strategy for sub-high-pressure pipes at various pressure levels in this unfavorable condition. This study's findings demonstrate that blending hydrogen improves the gas diffusion capacity and increases the likelihood of explosion. The primary factors that influence the pattern of leakage are the size of the leaking holes and the pressure of the pipeline. The gas compartment experiences the most unfavorable working conditions for natural gas pipeline leaks when there are higher pressures, wider leak openings, higher hydrogen blending ratios (HBRs), and leaks in close proximity to an air inlet. When the HBR is 20%, the minimum accident ventilation rates for pressures of 0.4 MPa and 0.8 MPa are 15 air changes per hour and 21 air changes per hour, respectively. The maximum allowable wind speed for accident ventilation is 5 m/s, as regulated by China's national standard, GB 50838-2015. This regulation makes it difficult to minimize the risk of leakage in a 1.6 MPa gas pipeline. The impact of particle addition jets on the flow field in natural gas pipelines was investigated, and the structural information of the flow field at different flow velocities in a symmetric jet flow was analyzed via numerical simulation. The results of coherent structures in the high-pressure natural gas pipeline reveal vortex structures of varying sizes both upstream and downstream of the jet flow. To determine the spatial distribution of the main vortex structures in the flow field, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) mode analysis was performed on the unsteady numerical results. Moreover, the detailed spatial characteristics of the coherent vortex structures represented by each mode were obtained. The results indicate that the large-scale vortex structures within the pipeline are balanced and stable, with their energy increasing as the jet flow velocity increases. Additionally, higher-order modes exhibit significant shedding of small-scale vortex structures downstream of the jet flow. In this research, coherent structures present in symmetric particle addition jets are provided, offering theoretical support for future investigations on the distribution of particle image velocimetry (PIV) flowmeters. In the period 2006-2018, just over 6 000 km of gas pipelines were installed in Mexico to form a gas-electricity chain, using private investment attracted by a business model based on the extraction of public resources. Successive neoliberal governments hastily promoted, without planning criteria or risk minimization, a large market for private companies that provided natural gas transportation services for electricity generation, resulting in an overcapacity whose budgetary dimensions and costly flaws have been evidenced by the State's public documentation. This article provides an interpretation of the extractivist-based privatization process in the Mexican natural gas sector and details the mechanisms of the business model of the well-known Energy Reform. Natural gas has been used for heating and production purposes in Turkey since 1987, and every passing year, the natural gas pipeline network continues to expand with investments. The distribution of natural gas within urban areas is achieved through a complex network structure formed by the joining of Polyethylene (PE) and Steel (ST) pipes using various connection elements. This complex structure is susceptible to deformation over time due to various reasons such as corrosion in steel lines, manufacturing errors in connection elements in PE lines, and other factors. As a result, natural gas leaks occasionally occur in these pipelines. The leakage control process in natural gas pipelines is carried out using specially designed equipment and vehicles equipped for this purpose. However, while these systems may be sufficient for collecting the necessary data for leak detection, the complex structure of the distribution network and the necessary data for leak detection, the complex structure of the distribution network and the necessity of performing this process with multiple teams bring about many challenges in terms of tracking, management, and reliability of the operation. At this point, the advancement of GIS (Geographic Information System), mobile, and communication technologies has made it possible to overcome these challenges. In this study, a real-time GIS-supported leak detection system developed using these technologies for Başkent Natural Gas Distrubition Inc. (Başkentgaz), which provides natural gas distribution services in Ankara, has been described. The study discusses the benefits brought by this system to the natural gas leak detection process. To research the flow-induced vibration characteristics of the natural gas loop, unsteady numerical simulation is carried out on the loop calculation model under different ambient temperatures and different flow rates, and the influence of different flow rates on the dynamic characteristics of the flow field and its induced vibration characteristics is obtained. The results show that the inherent frequency of the natural gas loop increases slightly under the action of heat–fluid–solid coupling. The maximum equivalent stress of the loop increases with the increase in ambient temperature under low flow conditions, but it is almost constant under high flow conditions. The smaller the cross-sectional area of the loop pipeline inlet, the greater the pressure, and the more significant the pressure gradient along the flow direction. The pressure pulsation of monitoring points in the pipeline under different flow rates presents different rules, and the pulsation amplitude of pipes with different diameters is different, among which the amplitude of the pipe with a diameter of 250 mm is the largest and that of the pipe with a diameter of 150 mm is the smallest. The pressure pulsation signals are concentrated in the low-frequency band of 0–10 Hz, and the range of the band decreases with the increase in the flow rate. The vibration frequency of the loop structure is close to the fluid pressure pulsation frequency and the inherent frequency under the action of heat–fluid–solid coupling, which causes a resonance of about 2 Hz. Existing guidance from ASTM standards on extracting mechanical properties from uniaxial tension test data is not suitable for high-volume applications because it lacks automation. The Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has performed over 450 uniaxial tension tests on samples extracted from dozens of distinct natural gas pipeline features in support of materials verification efforts; 144 of these tests recorded the entire deformation response up to fracture and were subsequently analyzed herein. Algorithms were developed to enable automatic, batch post-processing of the tensile data. Among the mechanical properties that this software extracts from the tensile data are the power-law hardening exponent and strength coefficient. A novel algorithm was developed to calculate these power-law parameters while accommodating the range of yielding and hardening behaviors present among the low carbon pipeline steels tested in this effort. The algorithm, presented in this brief technical note, first identifies the lower limit of the hardening region by calculating the tangent modulus of the stress–strain curve, which reaches its maximum value at the onset of strain hardening. The end of uniaxial hardening coincides with the ultimate tensile stress and the end of uniform deformation. From there the algorithm computes the power-law hardening parameters using conventional linear regression. Analysis of the data shows that this approach is more accurate than two other approaches: (1) regressing from 0.2% plastic strain to the limit load, and (2) iteratively regressing to identify the region that minimizes the regression error. The advantage of this approach, over existing methods, is observed for materials that exhibit a yield plateau. To further demonstrate the utility of the strain hardening information collected during this effort, the relationship between strain hardening exponent and ratio of yield strength to ultimate tensile strength from this data was compared to those reported in previous literature pertaining to remaining life assessments of steel line pipe. Overall, the strain hardening data obtained in this algorithm indicates greater hardening in pipeline steels than some previously published results. Road and pipeline infrastructure development for natural gas extraction often results in forest fragmentation, which could negatively influence habitat quality for many amphibian species. We investigated occurrence dynamics of the eastern red-backed salamander Plethodon cinereus in relation to natural gas pipeline rights-of-way (ROWs) and forest structure characteristics in northern Pennsylvania, USA. We sampled 80 sites across two study areas by using coverboards, with each site containing sampling plots at the center of the ROW, the edge of the ROW, and 10 m and 30 m into the adjacent forest. We assessed the influence of ROW age, ROW width, distance from ROW, and five forest structure characteristics on plot occupancy probability. Eastern red-backed salamander occupancy probability decreased with ROW age and increased with distance from ROW. Our results indicate that eastern red-backed salamanders are negatively influenced by forest fragmentation for natural gas ROWs. Moreover, responses were time dependent, with occupancy probability declining with ROW age. Due to low detections, we were unable to analyze data for the other amphibians and reptiles encountered during the study. Our capture data indicate that ROWs could improve habitat quality for some snake species, but additional research is needed to better understand the influence of ROWs on reptile species. To reduce future forest fragmentation and impacts on eastern red-backed salamander populations, managers could consider placing pipelines along existing linear clearings and enhancing the habitat quality of ROWs for salamanders. In this paper, we present the results of lab and pilot-scale testing of a continuously enhanced backscattering, or Rayleigh enhanced fiber cable that can improve distributed acoustic sensing performance. In addition, the Rayleigh-enhanced fiber is embedded within a tight buffered cable configuration to withstand and be compatible for field applications. The sensing fiber cable exhibits a Rayleigh enhancement of 13 dB compared to standard silica single-mode fiber while maintaining low attenuation of ≤ 0.4 dB/km. We built a phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry system to interrogate the enhanced backscattering fiber cable both in lab and pilot-scale tests. In the laboratory experiment, we analyzed the vibration performance of the enhanced backscattering fiber cable and compared it with the standard single-mode telecom fiber. Afterward, we field validated for natural gas pipeline vibration monitoring using a 4-inch diameter steel pipeline operating at a fixed pressure level of 1000 psi, and a flow rate of 5, 10, 15, and 20 ft/s. The feasibility of gas pipeline monitoring with the proposed enhanced backscattering fiber cable shows a substantial increase in vibration sensing performance. The pilot-scale testing results demonstrated in this paper enable pipeline operators to perform accurate flow monitoring, leak detection, third-party intrusion detection, and continuous pipeline ground movement. This paper studies the role of the U.S. pipeline infrastructure in the country's transition from coal to natural gas energy. I leverage the Environmental Protection Agency's Mercury and Air Toxics Standards as a plausibly exogenous intervention, which encouraged many coal plants to convert to natural gas. Combining this quasi-experimental variation with a plant's preexisting proximity to the pipeline network, I isolate implied pipeline connection costs within a dynamic discrete choice model of plant conversions. Key model results indicate that infrastructure-related costs prevent $9 billion in emissions reductions from taking place, suggesting a $2.4 million per mile external benefit of pipeline expansions. Austenitic stainless steels are widely used in cryogenic pressure vessels, liquefied natural gas pipelines, and offshore transportation liquefied petroleum gas storage tanks due to their excellent mechanical properties at cryogenic temperatures. To meet the lightweight and economical requirements, pre-strain of austenitic stainless steels was conducted to improve the strength at cryogenic temperatures. The essence of being strengthened by strain (strain strengthening) and the phase-transformation mechanism of austenitic stainless steels at cryogenic temperatures are reviewed in this work. The mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of austenitic stainless steels under different temperatures, types, and strain rates are compared. The phase-transformation mechanism of austenitic stainless steels during strain at cryogenic temperatures and its influence on strength and microstructure evolution are summarized. The constitutive models of strain strengthening at cryogenic temperatures were set to calculate the volume fraction of strain-induced martensite and to predict the mechanical properties of austenitic stainless steels. Hydrogen energy represents a crucial pathway towards achieving carbon neutrality and is a pivotal facet of future strategic emerging industries. The safe and efficient transportation of hydrogen is a key link in the entire chain development of the hydrogen energy industry's "production, storage, and transportation". Mixing hydrogen into natural gas pipelines for transportation is the potential best way to achieve large-scale, long-distance, safe, and efficient hydrogen transportation. Welds are identified as the vulnerable points in natural gas pipelines, and compatibility between hydrogen-doped natural gas and existing pipeline welds is a critical technical challenge that affects the global-scale transportation of hydrogen energy. Therefore, this article systematically discusses the construction and weld characteristics of hydrogen-doped natural gas pipelines, the research status of hydrogen damage mechanism, and mechanical property strengthening methods of hydrogen-doped natural gas pipeline welds, and points out the future development direction of hydrogen damage mechanism research in hydrogen-doped natural gas pipeline welds. The research results show that: ① Currently, there is a need for comprehensive research on the degradation of mechanical properties in welds made from typical pipe materials on a global scale. Dynamic loads generated by heavy vehicles are among the loads resisted by pipelines buried under road surfaces. Most recent analyses are based on static assumptions; however, in practice, vehicle loads change dynamically. In this study, the finite element model of the pipe–soil interaction of a buried pipeline was established using the ABAQUS 2020 finite element software, and dynamic loads were applied above the model soil to simulate the influence of vehicles above the highway on the buried X80 pipeline. The mechanical responses of different influencing factors to buried pipelines were analyzed. Increasing the pipe diameter and burial depth decreases the effect of vehicle rolling on the buried pipeline. The mass of the vehicle is the most significant factor that influences the stress and strain on the pipeline. The stress increase of the conventional vehicle load on the X80 gas pipeline does not exceed 10 MPa, and the maximum shape variable of the pipeline is within 13 mm. Natural gas (NG) leaks from below-ground pipelines pose safety, economic, and environmental hazards. Despite walking surveys using handheld methane (CH4) detectors to locate leaks, accurately triaging the severity of a leak remains challenging. It is currently unclear whether CH4 detectors used in walking surveys could be used to identify large leaks that require an immediate response. To explore this, we used above-ground downwind CH4 concentration measurements made during controlled emission experiments over a range of environmental conditions. These data were then used as the input to a novel modeling framework, the ESCAPE−1 model, to estimate the below-ground leak rates. Using 10-minute averaged CH4 mixing/meteorological data and filtering out wind speed < 2 m s−1/unstable atmospheric data, the ESCAPE−1 model estimates small leaks (0.2 kg CH4 h−1) and medium leaks (0.8 kg CH4 h−1) with a bias of −85%/+100% and −50%/+64%, respectively. Longer averaging (≥3 h) results in a 55% overestimation for small leaks and a 6% underestimation for medium leaks. These results suggest that as the wind speed increases or the atmosphere becomes more stable, the accuracy and precision of the leak rate calculated by the ESCAPE−1 model decrease. Pipeline transportation is widely regarded as the most cost-effective method for conveying substantial volumes of hydrogen across extensive distances. However, before hydrogen can be widely used, a new pipeline network must be built to reliably supply industrial users. An alternative way to rather expensive investments in new infrastructure could be to use the existing pipeline network to add pure hydrogen to natural gas and further transport the gas mixture in an industrially safe way. The new solution necessities will be examined for compression, transportation, and fire hazard accidents, which have not been scrutinized by other scholars. This study presents the results of a comprehensive analysis of the methane–hydrogen mixture compression process and a mathematical description of the main pipeline operation during gas mixture transportation, considering industrial fire safety issues. By examining a case study involving a main gas pipeline and its associated mathematical model for hydrogen transportation, it becomes feasible to assess the potential hazards associated with various leakage areas and the subsequent occurrence of fires. The findings of this investigation demonstrate that the spontaneous combustion of hydrogen due to leakage from a natural gas pipeline is directly influenced by the proportion of hydrogen present in the gas mixture. If the hydrogen percentage reaches a balanced ratio of 50–50%, it is plausible that the equipment at the compressor station could be subject to detrimental consequences, potentially leading to accidents and fires. Furthermore, the obtained results from modeling in ANSYS Fluent software propose two practical scenarios, which demonstrate that despite the limited research conducted on the safety aspects and the occurrence of fires during the operation of hydrogen gas pipelines, industrial and fire safety necessitate the inclusion of hydrogen transport infrastructure as a pivotal element within the broader framework of hydrogen infrastructure development. The expansion of the gas pipeline network makes it necessary, on the one hand, to meet the requirements of standards regarding the materials used, but on the other hand, it is necessary to weld them. In the case of natural gas as a fuel, the welding process is widely used, but in the case of replacing natural gas with a mixture of this gas and hydrogen, the requirements regarding the quality of the process must be significantly increased or the process must be completely changed. This article presents the results of testing welded joints for a newly developed welding technology for the transmission of a hydrogen mixture. Material tests were carried out on a butt-circumferential-welded joint made between two spiral pipes with an outer diameter of 711 mm and wall thickness of 11 mm in the X70 grade. The developed welding technology is distinguished by a change in the beveling method of the edges, which allows the heat input to the material to be limited. The technology was developed for use in natural on-shore and off-shore gas pipelines with the addition of hydrogen. As a result, additional requirements in terms of joint plasticity had to be met during welding. The test results obtained indicate that the joints are characterized by high strength (more than 581 MPa), higher than that of the base material (fracture in the base material) and good impact strength at reduced temperature (more than 129 J). Blending hydrogen in existing natural gas pipelines compromises steel integrity because it increases fatigue crack growth, promotes subcritical cracking and decreases fracture toughness. In this regard, several laboratories reported that the fracture toughness measured in a hydrogen containing gaseous atmosphere, KIH, can be 50% or less than KIC, the fracture toughness measured in air. From a pipeline integrity perspective, fracture mechanics predicts that injecting hydrogen in a natural gas pipeline decreases the failure pressure and the size of the critical flaw at a given pressure level. For a pipeline with a given flaw size, as shown in this work, the effect of Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) in the predicted failure pressure is largest when a failure occurs by a brittle fracture. The HE effect on failure pressure diminishes with a decreasing crack size or increasing fracture toughness. The safety margin after a successful hydrostatic test is reduced and therefore the time between hydrotests should be decreased. In this work, all those effects were quantified using a crack assessment methodology (level 2, API 579-ASME FFS) considering literature values for KIH and KIC reported for an API 5L X52 pipeline steel. To characterize different scenarios, various crack sizes were assumed, including a small crack with a size close to the detection limit of current in-line inspection techniques and a larger crack that represents the largest crack size that could survive a hydrotest to 100% of the steel Specified Minimum Yield Strength (SMYS). The blockage of natural gas pipelines caused by solid deposits such as hydrates is one of the major safety risks to transmission pipeline systems. The key to effective blockage relief or removal is to determine the location and severity of the blockage. In recent years, the pressure pulse wave method has been considered as a practical detection method due to its fast response time, simplicity of operation, and extended detection distance. Nevertheless, the current implementation of this method in pipelines indicates that the accuracy in detecting blockages is very low. To improve the accuracy of the pressure wave blockage detection technique in our experiments, a series of experiments were carried out to detect and locate hydrate blockages in natural gas pipelines based on the pressure wave method using a separate pipeline system of 22 mm diameter and 106 m length. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the blockage location prediction based on the pressure pulse wave method is within 5%. A new approach to anomaly detection termed “anomaly detection with designable generative adversarial network (Ano-DGAN)” is proposed, which is a series connection of a designable generative adversarial network and anomaly detection with a generative adversarial network. The proposed Ano-DGAN, based on a deep neural network, overcomes the limitations of abnormal data collection when performing anomaly detection. In addition, it can perform statistical diagnosis by identifying the healthy range of each design variable without a massive amount of initial data. A model was constructed to simulate a high-pressure liquefied natural gas pipeline for data collection and the determination of the critical design variables. The simulation model was validated and compared with the failure mode and effect analysis of a real pipeline, which showed that stress was concentrated in the weld joints of the branch pipe. A crack-growth degradation factor was applied to the weld, and anomaly detection was performed. The performance of the proposed model was highly accurate compared with that of other anomaly detection models, such as support vector machine, 1D convolutional neural network, and long short-term memory. This work proposes an innovative method for adjusting the natural gas from the grid to the consumer pipeline requirements in a full-scale pressure reduction station. The use of two counterflow vortex tubes instead of the traditional boiler to preheat the gas before throttling is demonstrated as a powerful alternative. Thus, a reduction of fossil fuel consumption is reached, which amounts to 7.1 % less CO 2 emitted. To ensure the optimal configuration, the vortex tube was thoroughly characterized in laboratory facilities using nitrogen as the working fluid. Various operating conditions were tested to determine the most efficient setup. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted with nitrogen to validate the behavior of the vortex tube. Subsequently, the working fluid was switched to methane to assess the performance differences between the two gases. Finally, the vortex tubes were deployed at a full-scale installation and tested under real consumption demand. The results obtained from this study offer promising insights into the practical implementation of the proposed method for adjusting the natural gas flow, highlighting its potential for reducing fossil fuel consumption and minimizing CO 2 emissions. In oil and gas exploitation and transportation, it is essential to avoid hydrate blockage in the wellbores and pipelines. Using kinetic inhibitors in composite with thermodynamic inhibitors can reduce the operational expenditure for oil and gas pipelines under high water content conditions. The phase equilibria of pure water natural gas system, oil–water natural gas system, and oil–water monoethylene glycol (MEG) natural gas system were first investigated by experiments and combined with software predictions in this study. The results showed that both mineral oil and MEG shifted the phase equilibrium of the system to high‐pressure and low‐temperature directions. The oil phase increased the effective temperature range of the compounding inhibitor. Then the hydrate inhibition performance and natural gas hydrate generation characteristics of the composite formulation of Luvicap 55w and MEG in oil–water emulsions and natural gas mixtures were investigated. With the increased subcooling, the induction time decreased sharply, and the gas consumption increased. The induction time increased with increasing MEG concentration, which verified the synergistic effect of MEG in oil–water emulsion for Luvicap 55w. The hydrate generation characteristics did not change much with increasing Luvicap concentration at the same temperature. Natural gas transmission pipelines installed in seismic and permafrost regions are vulnerable to cyclic loads with a large strain amplitude. Under these conditions, the pipe may fail in extremely low cycles, a situation which is also known as extremely low cycle fatigue (ELCF) failure. The fracture mechanism of ELCF shows significant difference to that of low cycle fatigue, and the ELCF life usually deviates from the Coffin–Manson law. Thus, it is essential to develop an effective model to predict ELCF failure of the pipeline. In this study, a series of ELCF tests is performed on pipeline steel (X70). A damage coupled mixed hardening model is developed to simulate the fracture behaviors. Continuum damage law under monotonic load is extended to cyclic load by introducing the effective equivalent plastic strain. By assuming the cyclic softening is induced by the damage accumulation, the damage parameters are fitted directly from the peak stress in each cycle. Then, the model is input into commercial software ABAQUS with a user material subroutine to simulate the fracture behaviors of these specimens. In recent years, polyethylene (PE) pipes have been widely utilized for urban natural gas transmission. However, as the use of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes increases, their service life and long-term performance assessment have become one of the most significant issues to be addressed. There has been a ton of studies on PE pipe life prediction techniques both domestically and internationally, but very little has been carried out on PE pipe life prediction in actual gas working environments with varying acid and alkaline levels. This experiment accelerates the aging of PE pipes using acid and alkaline corrosion immersion experiments to determine the lifespan of PE pipes. This study aims to investigate the performance changes of HDPE under strong, weak, and neutral corrosion conditions using corrosion solutions with PH values of 1, 5, and 8, to propose the impact of corrosion caused by various acids and alkalies on the HDPE aging life for natural gas, and to develop a mathematical model between the aging life of polyethylene and the PH values of acid and alkali corrosion solutions. The studies involved soaking and corroding HDPE pipes with various acidity and alkalinity chemicals to speed up the aging process, and then the tensile test was used to determine the mechanical characteristics of the aged PE pipes. Based on our findings, the empirical equation between acidity and service life of PE pipes is obtained by the mathematical fitting method, and a life prediction model of buried city gas HDPE pipes is proposed. The actual life of the aged pipes is determined by the relationship between strain-hardening (SH) modulus and aging time. The findings demonstrate that the service life of PE pipes changes with different levels of acidity and alkalinity: 1.872 days, 1060.507 days, and 1128.58 days following corrosive solution-accelerated aging with solution acidities of PH1, PH5, and PH8, respectively. The use of guided wave-based Ultrasonic Testing (UT) for monitoring Polyethylene (PE) pipes is mostly restricted to detecting defects in welded zones, despite its diversified success in monitoring metallic pipes. PE's viscoelastic behavior and semi-crystalline structure make it prone to crack formation under extreme loads and environmental factors, which is a leading cause of pipeline failure. This state-of-the-art study aims to demonstrate the potential of UT for detecting cracks in non-welded regions of natural gas PE pipes. Laboratory experiments were conducted using a UT system consisting of low-cost piezoceramic transducers assembled in a pitch-catch configuration. The amplitude of the transmitted wave was analyzed to study wave interaction with cracks of different geometries. The frequency of the inspecting signal was optimized through wave dispersion and attenuation analysis, guiding the selection of third- and fourth- order longitudinal modes for the study. The findings revealed that cracks with lengths equal to or greater than the wavelength of the interacting mode were more easily detectable, while smaller crack lengths required greater crack depths for detection. However, there were potential limitations in the proposed technique related to crack orientation. Hydrogen transport by blending hydrogen into natural gas transmission pipelines and by pure-hydrogen pipelines is a prospective mode of energy transmission during the transition to renewables. The risk of hydrogen embrittlement (HE) in pipeline steels must first be quantified to ensure safe pipeline operation. This review provides an overview of HE in pipeline steels. Most pipeline steels have reduced ductility when exposed to hydrogen partial pressures of 100 bar and above. Higher-strength pipeline steels (X80 and X100) have been found to undergo HE at ∼50 bar hydrogen. Hydrogen-induced subcritical crack growth in pipeline steels has not been reported in the literature. There are few articles on HE in pipeline welds, with some indications that the weld is more susceptible to HE, and some indications that it is less. Existing natural gas pipelines provide an economic alternative for the transport of hydrogen (H2) in an envisioned hydrogen economy. Hydrogen can dissolve in the steel and cause hydrogen embrittlement (HE), compromising pipeline structural integrity. HE causes subcritical cracking, decreases ductility and fracture toughness, and increases the fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR). This work analyzes the testing standards in gaseous hydrogen used to quantify those effects. Design code ASME B31.12 applicable to hydrogen pipelines has more stringent requirements than ASME B31.8 code commonly used for constructing natural gas pipelines. Differences in materials requirements specified by those codes are summarized. ASME B31.12 pipeline code applies for H2 at a concentration greater than 10% molar. However, recent testing programs acknowledge that H2 degrades steel mechanical properties regardless of its percentage in the blend. This paper discusses how the hydrogen degraded mechanical properties affect pipeline integrity. Decreased mechanical properties cause a drop in the failure pressure of a flawed pipeline, calculated following a fitness for service methodology. There is an increasing risk of subcritical crack growth in H2 as the hardness of base metal and welds increases. The measured signals of internal leakage detection of the large-diameter pipeline ball valve in natural gas pipeline systems usually contain background noise, which will affect the accuracy of internal leakage detection and sound localization of internal leakage points due to the interference of noise. Aiming at this problem, this paper proposes an NWTD-WP feature extraction algorithm by combining the wavelet packet (WP) algorithm and the improved two-parameter threshold quantization function. The results show that the WP algorithm has a good feature extraction effect on the valve leakage signal, and the improved threshold quantization function can avoid the defects of the traditional soft threshold function and hard threshold function, such as discontinuity and the pseudo-Gibbs phenomenon, when reconstructing the signal. The NWTD-WP algorithm is effective in extracting the features of the measured signals with low signal/noise ratio. The denoise effect is much better than that of the traditional soft and hard threshold quantization functions. It proved that the NWTD-WP algorithm can be used for studying the existing safety valve leakage vibration signals in the laboratory and the internal leakage signals of the scaled-down model of the large-diameter pipeline's ball valve. Natural gas is believed to be a critical transitional energy source. However, natural gas pipelines, once failed, will contribute to a large amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including methane from uncontrolled natural gas venting and carbon dioxide from flared natural gas. However, the GHG emissions caused by pipeline incidents are not included in the regular inventories, making the counted GHG amount deviate from the reality. This study, for the first time, establishes an inventory framework for GHG emissions including all natural gas pipeline incidents in the two of the largest gas producers and consumers in North America (United States and Canada) from 1980s to 2021. The inventory comprises GHG emissions resulting from gathering and transmission pipeline incidents in a total of 24 states or regions in the United States between 1970 and 2021, local distribution pipeline incidents in 22 states or regions between 1970 and 2021, as well as natural gas pipeline incidents in a total of 7 provinces or regions in Canada between 1979 and 2021. These datasets can improve the accuracy of regular emission inventories by covering more emission sources in the United States and Canada and provide essential information for climate-oriented pipeline integrity management. A generalized mathematical model of the non-isothermal filtration of natural gas in a porous medium and a modified quasi-stationary model of gas hydrate formation (deposition) in pipelines are used to solve the conjugate problem for the joint operation of the gas reservoir–well system and predict the changes in temperature, pressure, gas moisture content, and well flow section. It is found that the presence of a thick permafrost layer accelerates hydrate formation in the well. To measure the natural gas flow in the natural gas pipeline, a flow measurement method based on a laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) is proposed, and the flow field in the natural gas pipeline is accurately measured. The flow laws of the flow field in the pipeline are obtained. In this paper, the influence of the jet flow on the flow field in the main pipe during the injection of tracer particles is analyzed by numerical calculations, and the reliability of the calculation is verified by the LDV test. The results show that the influence of the jet on the flow field in the main pipe weakens rapidly within a short distance, which provides good conditions for measuring the flow in the LDV test pipeline. The error between the flow measured by LDV and the turbine standard device is within 0.47%. Meanwhile, the uncertainty of the LDV measurement test system of a natural gas pipeline is evaluated. The system uncertainty is less than 2%, which satisfies the uncertainty requirements of the metering system, verifying the feasibility of the LDV metering flow and providing a reliable basis for the accurate metering of natural gas. The incident on the Nord Stream pipeline system at the bottom of the Baltic Sea in 2022 caused a significant release of natural gas into the atmosphere and made it impossible to transport gas further through three of the four pipelines. Before the pipeline system was inspected and the results of the technical commission were available, a preliminary assessment of the volume of natural gas released was carried out, the possible technical consequences of the incident were evaluated and a preliminary assessment of the possibility of carrying out repair and restoration work was carried out. In this paper, we propose an optimization model that considers two pathways for injecting renewable content into natural gas pipeline networks. The pathways include (1) power-to-hydrogen or PtH, where off-peak electricity is converted to hydrogen via electrolysis, and (2) power-to-methane, or PtM, where carbon dioxide from different source locations is converted into renewable methane (also known as synthetic natural gas, SNG). The above pathways result in green hydrogen and methane, which can be injected into an existing natural gas pipeline network. Based on these pathways, a multi-period network optimization model that integrates the design and operation of hydrogen from PtH and renewable methane is proposed. The multi-period model is a mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model that determines (1) the optimal concentration of hydrogen and carbon dioxide in the natural gas pipelines, (2) the optimal location of PtH and carbon dioxide units, while minimizing the overall system cost. We show, using a case study in Ontario, the optimal network structure for injecting renewable hydrogen and methane within an integrated natural gas network system provides a $12M cost reduction. The optimal concentration of hydrogen ranges from 0.2 vol % to a maximum limit of 15.1 vol % across the network, while reaching a 2.5 vol % at the distribution point. This is well below the maximum limit of 5 vol % specification. Furthermore, the optimizer realized a CO2 concentration ranging from 0.2 vol % to 0.7 vol %. This is well below the target of 1% specified in the model. The study is essential to understanding the practical implication of hydrogen penetration in natural gas systems in terms of constraints on hydrogen concentration and network system costs. Accuracy of temperature measurement of natural gas flows in closed conduits is a highly debated topic due to the complexity of the measurement chain and the related economic impact. First, specific thermo-fluid dynamic issues occur because of the difference between the temperature of the gas stream and that of the external ambient and the mean radiant temperature inside the pipe. Furthermore, the installation conditions of the temperature sensor (e.g., immersion length and diameter of the thermowell) play a crucial role. In this paper, the authors present the results of a numerical and experimental study conducted both in the laboratory and in-field aimed at analyzing the reliability of temperature measurement in natural gas networks as a function of the pipe temperature and of the pressure and velocity of the gas stream. The results obtained in the laboratory show errors ranging between 0.16 and 5.87 °C in the summer regime and between −0.11 and −2.72 °C in the winter regime, depending on the external pipe temperature and gas velocity. These errors have been found to be consistent with those measured in-field, where high correlation between the pipe temperatures, the gas stream and the external ambient have been also demonstrated, especially in summer conditions. The effect of gathering pipeline pressure, temperature, and key components on the solubility of monomeric sulfur in high-sulfur-content natural gas is directly related to the prediction and prevention of sulfur deposition in surface gathering pipelines. Based on our previous study on a prediction model of sulfur solubility in gas with a new formula for the binary interaction coefficient between sulfur and H2S, a new gas–solid thermodynamic phase equilibrium solubility prediction model for monomeric sulfur in high-sulfur-content natural gas was improved based on the gas–solid phase equilibrium principle considering both physical and chemical solution mechanisms. Two new expressions for binary interaction coefficients between sulfur and CO2 and CH4, considering both temperature and solvent density, are proposed in this new solubility prediction model. In this paper, the main factors, such as the gathering pipeline pressure, gathering pipeline temperature, H2S, and CO2, affecting the solubility law of elemental sulfur in high-sulfur-content natural gas are investigated. The results show that the total solubility of elemental sulfur in high-sulfur-bearing natural gas tends to decrease with an increase in the gathering temperature, in which the increase in temperature promotes physical solution, and the physical solution mechanism prevails. Conversely, chemical solution is promoted, and the chemical solution mechanism prevails. With an increase in the gathering pressure, the total solubility of elemental sulfur in high-sulfur-content gas tends to increase, where the physical solubility decreases slightly at first and then increases continuously, with a pressure inflection point of about 2.0 MPa, and the pressure increase has a significant promoting effect on the chemical solubility of elemental sulfur. The increase in the H2S concentration promotes the solution of elemental sulfur in the gas phase in general and significantly promotes the chemical solution of elemental sulfur. The distribution of hydrogen and how this can be widely achieved plays a significant role in the transition from fossil fuels to clean fuel. Using the existing natural gas pipeline network can be a suitable option for countries with extensive pipeline infrastructure. This study is aimed at investigating the compatibility of the existing polyethylene (PE) distribution pipe network with hydrogen. This paper utilises the cyclic pennsylvania edge notch test (CPENT) method together with material property measurements including melting point, crystallinity, and oxidative induction time (OIT) to understand the impact of exposing two different PE pipe resins to hydrogen at different exposure times. It was found that exposure to hydrogen has a noticeable impact time to failure, while the bulk crystallinity, OIT, and melting point showed little change. Bacteria were introduced into natural gas transportation lines and reacted with CO 2 and corrosive ions to cause severe corrosion when natural gas was captured by water drive methods. Anti-microbial corrosion of natural gas pipeline is an important prerequisite for pipeline steel protection. An Ni coating with high corrosion resistance was prepared on the surface of pipeline steel by electrodeposition method, and CuO nanoparticles were introduced to obtain anti-microbial function. A simulated corrosion environment in a natural gas pipeline was designed to investigate the corrosion resistance behavior of the CuO-loaded Ni coating under the combined action of CO 2 , Cl−, and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and the inhibition effect of CuO on the microbial corrosion of SRB. The corrosion rate of nano-CuO-loaded Ni coatings at 15 days was only 41.8% of that of the pipeline steel. In addition to the corrosion resistance of the Ni coating, the corrosion rate was reduced because nano-CuO reduces the probability of corrosion reactions and has an anti-microbial effect on SRB. The natural gas quality fluctuates in complex natural gas pipeline networks, because of the influence of the pipeline transmission process, changes in the gas source, and fluctuations in customer demand in the mixing process. Based on the dynamic characteristics of the system with large time lag and non−linearity, this article establishes a deep−learning−based dynamic prediction model for calorific value in natural gas pipeline networks, which is used to accurately and efficiently analyze the dynamic changes of calorific value in pipeline networks caused by non−stationary processes. Numerical experiment results show that the deep−learning model can effectively extract the effects of non−stationary and large time lag hydraulic characteristics on natural gas calorific value distribution. The method is able to rapidly predict the dynamic changes of gas calorific value in the pipeline network, based on real−time operational data such as pressure, flow rate, and gas quality parameters. It has a prediction accuracy of over 99% and a calculation time of only 1% of that of the physical simulation model (built and solved based on TGNET commercial software). Moreover, with noise and missing key parameters in the data samples, the method can still maintain an accuracy rate of over 97%, which can provide a new method for the dynamic assignment of calorific values to complex natural gas pipeline networks and on−site metering management.
