Among the technologies that have made 5G wireless communication successful are non‐orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and cooperative NOMA. The distinction is that cooperative NOMA adds coding schemes to improve performance. Nevertheless, research on cooperative NOMA has primarily used theoretical correlation‐based stochastic models (CBSM) instead of geometric‐based stochastic models (GBSM) that represent suitable channel conditions by including characteristics like path loss, delay profile, and angle of arrival in the model. This paper connects the low adoption of GBSM is due to computational challenges. Given this, it is essential to assess cooperative NOMA that employs GBSM with large antenna transmitters to meet future 5G expectations. The cooperative NOMA system's transmitter is modelled as a uniform rectangular array and a novel channel realisation is proposed for analysis. The location vector of the antenna using the physical dimension of the array is defined to reduce computational problems. Results shows that the average bit‐error performance of GBSM matches that of CBSM at the same antenna element separation, but the spatial correlation between antenna elements significantly impacts the outage probability and average achievable rates of GBSM performance. Due to the limitation of mobility and cost, it is inappropriate to utilize ground base station (GBS) to provide service in emergency scenarios or harsh environments. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is considered as a feasible way to solve the problem. Millimetre wave communication and UAV can be used together to offer wireless communications flexibly and rapidly for target area. However, fuselage jittering and energy supply would affect the quality and reliability of UAV communication seriously. To overcome the weakness of UAV, the authors prefer to use multiple UAVs to provide wireless communication service simultaneously. This paper investigates the design of hybrid beamforming in the scenarios including multiple UAVs and one end user. Cooperation strategy and alternating optimization method are applied in this design. The distributed UAV base stations are regarded as an entirety and the reference beamforming scheme obtained. Then, the beamforming problem for each UAV is formulated. Moreover, residual error minimization (REM) algorithm is proposed to find the solution of hybrid beamformers at UAV side. Finally, the beamformer of the receiver is optimized with the assist of effective channel, which includes the gain of both channel and beamformers of the transmitters. We consider a multiple‐input multiple‐output (MIMO) channel in the presence of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Specifically, our focus is on analysing the spatial multiplexing gains in line‐of‐sight and low‐scattering MIMO channels in the near field. We prove that the channel capacity is achieved by diagonalising the end‐to‐end transmitter‐RIS‐receiver channel, and applying the water‐filling power allocation to the ordered product of the singular values of the transmitter‐RIS and RIS‐receiver channels. The obtained capacity‐achieving solution requires an RIS with a non‐diagonal matrix of reflection coefficients. Under the assumption of nearly‐passive RIS, that is, no power amplification is needed at the RIS, the water‐filling power allocation is necessary only at the transmitter. We refer to this design of RIS as a linear, nearly‐passive, reconfigurable electromagnetic object (EMO). In addition, we introduce a closed‐form and low‐complexity design for RIS, whose matrix of reflection coefficients is diagonal with unit‐modulus entries. The reflection coefficients are given by the product of two focusing functions: one steering the RIS‐aided signal towards the mid‐point of the MIMO transmitter and one steering the RIS‐aided signal towards the mid‐point of the MIMO receiver. We prove that this solution is exact in line‐of‐sight channels under the paraxial setup. With the aid of extensive numerical simulations in line‐of‐sight (free‐space) channels, we show that the proposed approach offers performance (rate and degrees of freedom) close to that obtained by numerically solving non‐convex optimization problems at a high computational complexity. This paper studies intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided wireless power transfer (WPT) to batteryless Internet of Everything (IoE) devices. A practical energy receiver (ER) with multiple antennas is investigated. Multiple RF energy flows gleaned by all the receive antennas are input multiple energy harvesters, which are further rectified to direct-current (DC) energy. The resultant multiple DC energy flows are then combined in the DC domain for energy storage. Three classic waveforms, namely deterministic waveform, M-QAM waveform, and Gaussian waveform, are considered for WPT. We maximize the output DC power by jointly designing the active transmit beamformer of the transmitter and the passive reflecting beamformer of the IRS with the above-mentioned waveforms, respectively, subject to the transmit power constraint at the transmitter and to the limited resolution constraints on the phase-shifters of the IRS. A low complexity alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed, which converges to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) point and thus results in a locally optimal solution. The numerical results demonstrate that the Gaussian waveform has the best energy performance with a low input RF power to the energy harvesters. We report a packaging approach for building mm-wave massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter arrays in tiles. A single-channel 135-GHz transmitter, having a 22-nm fully-depleted (FD)-silicon on insulator (SOI) CMOS IC for baseband-RF conversion, an InP HBT power amplifier, and a linear microstrip patch antenna array, all packaged on a low-permittivity ceramic interposer (Kyocera GL771, $\varepsilon _{r}=5.2\,\,\text {and}\,\,\delta =0.003$), had 27.5-dBm measured effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) at saturation and showed 8.5% error vector magnitude (EVM) during 30-Gb/s, 64 quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission. An eight-channel transmitter MIMO array tile module constructed on an low-temperature-cofired ceramic (LTCC) interposer, with the same antennas and ICs, after calibration and under the control of a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), had 38.5-dBm measured EIRP at saturation and showed −13-dB EVM in 1.92-Gb/s 16 QAM transmission. In this paper, the design of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) optical wireless communication (OWC) link based on vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays is systematically carried out with the aim to support data rates in excess of 1 Tb/s for the backhaul of sixth generation (6G) indoor wireless networks. The proposed design combines direct current optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) and a spatial multiplexing MIMO architecture. For such an ultra-high-speed line-of-sight (LOS) OWC link with low divergence laser beams, maintaining alignment is of high importance. In this paper, two types of misalignment error between the transmitter and receiver are distinguished, namely, radial displacement error and orientation angle error, and they are thoroughly modeled in a unified analytical framework assuming Gaussian laser beams, resulting in a generalized misalignment model (GMM). The derived GMM is then extended to MIMO arrays and the performance of the MIMO-OFDM OWC system is analyzed in terms of the aggregate data rate. Novel insights are provided into the system performance based on computer simulations by studying various influential factors such as beam waist, array configuration and different misalignment errors, which can be used as guidelines for designing short range Tb/s MIMO OWC systems. This article concerns the physical layer security (PLS) problem in distributed antenna systems (DASs), where eavesdroppers are equipped with multiple antennas. If both legitimate transmitter (Alice) and receiver (Bob) broadcast wireless signals via a DAS, the channel state information (CSI) between Alice and Bob may be exposed to an eavesdropper (Eve) due to the broadcast nature of wireless signals. Based on the exposed CSI, Eve can use multiple antennas to improve the eavesdropping capability on the confidential message transmitted from Alice. The prior PLS approaches to defend against the eavesdropping attack have two limitations. The first limitation is to assume that the CSI of Bob is available to Alice. The second limitation is to assume that there is no error in the feedback CSIs. In this article, we propose a new PLS scheme of a DAS by using one-bit feedback information. The basic idea of our approach is to generate a null transmission vector from the distributed transmitters of Alice to Bob while using different artificial noise components to protect the exposure problem of CSI between Alice and Bob. The proposed scheme has the following advantages: improved secrecy rate, rapid convergence, and good performance under a time-varying channel. We implemented our scheme and conducted extensive performance comparisons through simulations. Our experimental results show that the proposed scheme improves the secrecy rate with 1.20 b/s/Hz as compared to prior approaches. Space modulation techniques (SMTs) are multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter system implementations that have shown to achieve favorable properties compared to existing MIMO technologies. This includes properties such as lower power consumption, cost, and enhanced error performance. As modern wireless standards have come to demand also more reliability and less latency, in recent work analyzing the reliability of SMTs, it was shown that existing SMT implementations do not effectively perform under degraded system conditions. Essentially, under certain failure conditions, parts of SMT systems become unusable although still effectively operational. As a result, affecting the best achievable spectral efficiency, and thus system data rate of the system. In this work, novel SMT implementations are presented and referred to as hybrid SMTs (HSMTs). HSMTs are designed to degrade in a manner that keeps use of operational hardware and maintains a higher spectral efficiency for longer duration. Four different HSMTs are presented namely; hybrid space shift keying (HSSK), hybrid spatial modulation (HSM), hybrid quadrature space shift keying (HQSSK), and hybrid quadrature spatial modulation (HQSM). In this article, we present a novel digital predistortion (DPD) system which can be updated quickly and efficiently in response to the dynamic reconfiguration of multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitters. By identifying the shared properties of different power amplifiers (PAs) with two feature extraction stages, nonlinear behaviors of the PAs are encoded into low-dimensional features. Using the extracted features as input, a novel DPD generator is employed to synthesize DPD model coefficients directly. In this way, when the power levels or beam angles change, the DPD model can be updated fast and accurately without capturing the output data or applying linear system identification algorithms. To capture slow-varying dynamics of the PAs, the features can also be calibrated efficiently in the background. Computational complexity and operational latency can thus be reduced significantly. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed DPD approach achieves excellent linearization performance with low complexity, making itself a promising linearization solution for 5G massive MIMO transmitters. In an indoor environment rich in scatterers, wideband signals sent by a transmitter create multiple resolvable transmission paths towards a low-power receiver. Therefore, spatial gains can be exploited for increasing the performance of wireless information and energy provision without implementing multiple antennas. The transmit signal shaping vector at the transmitter and the power splitting ratio at the receiver is jointly optimised for maximising the attainable information throughput, while satisfying the receiver’s requirement on the harvested direct current (DC). Identification of communication parameters, a major task of intelligent receivers, has important applications in intelligent systems, especially cognitive radio systems. Multiple antennas make the identification problem more challenging. In this paper, we focus on the problem of detecting the number of transmit antennas in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio systems. A novel identification algorithm is proposed to determine the number of transmit antennas for MIMO systems in the presence of alpha-stable noise. We first introduce the correlation matrix based on the fractional lower order statistics (FLOS) and provide a particular structure of FLOS-based correlation matrix. Then, the eigenvalues of the FLOS-based correlation matrix are employed to construct a test statistic and the central limit theorem is exploited to obtain the decision threshold. Finally, the transmit-antenna number is detected using a serial binary hypothesis test. Simulation results are demonstrated to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed transmit-antenna number detection algorithm for MIMO systems in the presence of alpha-stable noise. High resolution analog to digital converters (ADCs) are conventionally used at the receiver terminals to store an accurate digital representation of the received signal, thereby allowing for reliable decoding of transmitted messages. However, in a wide range of applications, such as communication over millimeter wave and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the use of high resolution ADCs is not feasible due to power budget limitations. In the conventional fully digital receiver design, where each receiver antenna is connected to a distinct ADC, reducing the ADC resolution leads to performance loss in terms of achievable rates. One proposed method to mitigate the rate-loss is to use analog linear combiners leading to design of hybrid receivers. Here, the hybrid framework is augmented by the addition of delay elements to allow for temporal analog processing. Two new classes of receivers consisting of delay elements, analog linear combiners, and one-bit ADCs are proposed. The fundamental limits of communication in single and multi-user (uplink and downlink) MIMO systems employing the proposed receivers are investigated. In the high signal to noise ratio regime, it is shown that the proposed receivers achieve the maximum achievable rates among all receivers with the same number of one-bit ADCs. We consider the $K$ -user Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channel with $M$ antennas at each transmitter and $N$ antennas at each receiver. It is assumed that channel coefficients are constant real numbers and are available at all transmitters and at all receivers. The main objective of this paper is to characterize the number of Degrees of Freedom (DoF) of this channel. Using the real interference alignment technique introduced in Motahari et al., 2014, we show that $\frac {MN}{M+N} K$ degrees of freedom can be achieved for almost all channel realizations. Also, a new upper-bound on the DoF of this channel is provided. This upper-bound coincides with our achievable DoF for $K\geq K_{u} \triangleq \frac {M+N}{\gcd (M,N)}$ , where $\gcd (M,N)$ denotes the greatest common divisor of $M$ and $N$. This gives an exact characterization of DoF for $M\times N$ MIMO Gaussian interference channel in the case of $K\geq K_{u}$. Since there is no cooperation between transmit (or receive) antennas of each user in our transmission scheme, this result shows that the DoF benefit of joint processing in collocated antennas vanishes when the number of users is greater than a certain threshold. Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) composed of unit cells with tunable reflection coefficients, amplitude, phase, and frequency has received great interest from wireless communication communities. In this paper, a non-stationary three-dimensional (3-D) wideband IRS-assisted channel model, including spatial and temporal non-stationarity, is proposed for high altitude platform (HAP) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. The proposed channel model considers the propagation environment around the receiver (Rx) and that around both the IRS and Rx, which are modeled using multiple 3-D cylinders and confocal elliptic-cylinders, respectively. In the proposed model, the optimal reflection phases of the IRS reflection units are proposed, and the number and the size of the IRS reflection units are also considered, which are used to investigate received signal strength, multipath fading effect, and spatial non-stationarity of IRS-aided communication systems. The numerical results show that the IRS reflection units can improve the received signal strength by adjusting the reflection phases and multipath fading effect can be effectively reduced by increasing the number and the size of IRS reflection units. Also, it is found that the spatial correlation significantly decreases with the increase of the number and size of the IRS reflection units, and the proposed IRS-aided channel model presents spatial non-stationarity. This work investigates the effect of double intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in improving the spectrum efficient of multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network operating in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band. Specifically, we aim to solve a weighted sum rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the digital precoding at the transmitter and the analog phase shifters at the IRS, subject to the minimum achievable rate constraint. To facilitate the design of an efficient solution, we first reformulate the original problem into a tractable one by exploiting the majorization-minimization (MM) method. Then, a block coordinate descent (BCD) method is proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution, where the precoding matrices and the phase shifters are alternately optimized. Specifically, the digital precoding matrix design problem is solved by the quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP), while the analog phase shift optimization is solved by the Riemannian manifold optimization (RMO). The convergence and computational complexity are analyzed. Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) has recently appeared as a powerful and robust multiple access and interference management strategy for downlink Multi-user (MU) multi-antenna communications. In this work, we study the precoder design problem for RSMA scheme in downlink MU systems with both perfect and imperfect Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) and assess the role and benefits of transmitting multiple common streams. Unlike existing works which have considered single-antenna receivers (Multiple-Input Single-Output–MISO), we propose and extend the RSMA framework for multi-antenna receivers (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output–MIMO) and formulate the precoder optimization problem with the aim of maximizing the Weighted Ergodic Sum-Rate (WESR). Precoder optimization is solved using Sample Average Approximation (SAA) together with the proposed vectorization and Weighted Minimum Mean Square Error (WMMSE) based approach. Achievable sum-Degree of Freedom (DoF) of RSMA is derived for the proposed framework as an increasing function of the number of transmitted common and private streams, which is further validated by the Ergodic Sum Rate (ESR) performance using Monte Carlo simulations. Conventional MU–MIMO based on linear precoders and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) schemes are considered as baselines. Numerical results show that with imperfect CSIT, the sum-DoF and ESR performance of RSMA is superior to those of the two baselines, and is increasing with the number of transmitted common streams. Moreover, by better managing the interference, RSMA not only has significant ESR gains over baseline schemes but is more robust to CSIT inaccuracies, network loads and user deployments. Blind Interference Alignment (BIA) schemes create and exploit channel coherence patterns without the knowledge of channel realizations at transmitters, while beamforming schemes rely primarily on channel knowledge available to the transmitters without regard to channel coherence patterns. In order to explore the compatibility of these disparate ideas and the possibility of synergistic gains, this work studies the Degrees of Freedom (DoF) of the 2-user ${(M_{1}\times N_{1})(M_{2}\times N_{2})}$ Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Interference Channel (IC) where Transmitter 1 is equipped with reconfigurable antennas and has no channel knowledge, while Transmitter 2 has partial channel knowledge but no reconfigurable antennas. Taking a fundamental dimensional analysis perspective, the main question is to identify which antenna configurations allow synergistic DoF gains. The main results of this work are two-fold. The first result identifies antenna configurations where both reconfigurable antennas and partial channel knowledge are individually beneficial, as those where $M_{1}< N_{1}< \min (M_{2},N_{2})$. The second result shows that synergistic gains exist in each of these settings, over the best known solutions that rely on either reconfigurable antennas or partial channel knowledge alone. To reduce the demand for frequently adjusting phase shifts in the fifth-generation (5G) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) beamforming transmitters, in this article, a novel digital predistortion (DPD) technique is proposed, which employs multiple predistortion boxes to shape the pattern of nonlinear distortions in space in order to linearize multiple targets simultaneously. By using this approach, the linearization angle is widened and thus the communication quality can be kept when the user moves off the main beam direction. As a proof of concept, two DPD boxes, namely main and auxiliary boxes, are used to realize the 2-target linearization. A new model extraction method is also proposed with a dedicated over-the-air (OTA) feedback post-processing stage. Simulation and experiment are demonstrated on a 4-path beamforming transmitter. We propose a deep learning-based channel estimation, quantization, feedback, and precoding method for downlink multiuser multiple-input and multiple-output systems. In the proposed system, channel estimation and quantization for limited feedback are handled by a receiver deep neural network (DNN). Precoder selection is handled by a transmitter DNN. To emulate the traditional channel quantization, a binarization layer is adopted at each receiver DNN, and the binarization layer is also used to enable end-to-end learning. However, this can lead to inaccurate gradients, which can trap the receiver DNNs at a poor local minimum during training. To address this, we consider knowledge distillation, in which the existing DNNs are jointly trained with an auxiliary transmitter DNN. The use of an auxiliary DNN as a teacher network allows the receiver DNNs to additionally exploit lossless gradients, which is useful in avoiding a poor local minimum. For the same number of feedback bits, our DNN-based precoding scheme can achieve a higher downlink rate compared to conventional linear precoding with codebook-based limited feedback. The correspondence cited in the above article derived ergodic capacity of the coherent multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel in independent and identically distributed (IID) Rayleigh fading. While the theoretical results are correct, several plots in the paper are incorrect. In this correspondence, we correct the plots. More importantly, the corrected plots present an interesting and compelling contrast between performances of the coherent MIMO systems with and without channel state information at the transmitter; whereas this view is somewhat limited in the above article because of flaws in the capacity curves. Massive multiple-input-multiple-output (M-MIMO) features a capability for spatial multiplexing of large number of users. This number becomes even more extreme in extra-large (XL-MIMO), a variant of M-MIMO where the antenna array is of very large size. Yet, the problem of signal processing complexity in M-MIMO is further exacerbated by the XL size of the array. The basic processing problem boils down to a sparse system of linear equations that can be addressed by the randomized Kaczmarz (RK) algorithm. This algorithm has recently been applied to devise low-complexity M-MIMO receivers; however, it is limited by the fact that certain configurations of the linear equations may significantly deteriorate the performance of the RK algorithm. In this article, we embrace the interest in accelerated RK algorithms and introduce three new RK-based low-complexity receiver designs. In our experiments, our methods are not only able to overcome the previous scheme, but they are more robust against inter-user interference (IUI) and sparse channel matrices arising in the XL-MIMO regime. In addition, we show that the RK-based schemes use a mechanism similar to that used by successive interference cancellation (SIC) receivers to approximate the regularized zero-forcing (RZF) scheme. We consider the problem of communicating over a relay-assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel with additive noise, in which physically separated relays forward quantized information to a central decoder where the transmitted message is to be decoded. We assume that channel state information is available in the transmitter and show that the design of a rational-forcing precoder—a precoder which is matched to the quantizers used in the relays—is beneficial for reducing the symbol error probability. It turns out that for such rational-forcing precoder based systems, there is natural tradeoff between the peak to average power ratio in the transmitter and the rate of communication between the relays and the central decoder. The precoder design problem is formulated mathematically, and several algorithms are developed for realizing this tradeoff. Optimality of the decoder communication rate is shown based on a result in distributed function computation. Covert communication conceals transmission of messages between Alice and Bob from an adversary, Willie, who tries to determine if a transmission took place or not. While covert communication in a basic, standard setting where all variables are known to Willie, results in the well-known square-root law, when a jammer is present and assists Alice by creating uncertainty in Willie’s decoder, a strictly positive transmission rate is possible. In this work, we analyze the case where the jammer is equipped with multiple antennas. Specifically, we analyze the effect of multiple antennas at the jammer on Alice’s transmission power and consequently on the transmission rate. We consider both the case where the channel knowledge of Willie is known as well as the case where it is unknown. We formulate several optimization problems for the transmission strategies of the jammer to maximize his assistance to Alice, in terms of maximizing Bob’s received SNR and consequently the covert rate. When the channel information is known to the jammer, we show that under an achievable covertness scheme, the optimal strategy of the jammer is to perform beamforming towards a single direction with all his available power. This direction though, is not trivial, since it reflects a tradeoff point between minimizing the interference at Bob and maximizing the interference at Willie. When the channel knowledge is unknown, we show that the optimal strategy of the jammer is either to transmit isotropically to all directions or to the null-space of Bob, where this choice depends on certain channel conditions. This is in contrast to current schemes in the literature. Furthermore, we extend the optimization problems to the case where Bob is also equipped with multiple antennas, and provide insightful results, shown to be asymptotically optimal, accompanied by simulations. The transmitter design was solely based on RF-switches. SSK relays information strictly through spatial symbols and does not require the generation of any modulated symbol. It has been always anticipated in literature that SSK can be implemented with a single or no RF chain, but the physical realizations were never accomplished. This work demonstrates a 4 × 2 and 2 × 2 MIMO implementation of an SSK system using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) RF-switches. As a result, the achieved implementation paves the way towards commercial deployments of space modulation techniques. A detailed discussion of the hardware implementation is presented and results reveal an accurate match with theoretical SSK results over a Rician fading channel with variant Rician K-factors. For multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system, transmitter utilizes a pre-equalizer based precoding to cancel inter-stream interference for parallel transmission with the aid of accurate feedback of channel state information (CSI) from all receivers. The correct power scaling factor, which normalizes the symbols power of precoding to be a constant one, is required at each receiver. Due to CSI error and limitation of feed-forward link, the received inaccurate power scaling factor will shrink or expand the received constellation points which severely degrades the performance of MIMO system. In this paper, using nonlinear vector perturbation (VP) and linear zero-forcing (ZF) precoding, we analyze the impact of inaccurate power scaling factor on the performance of a MIMO precoding system. The analyzed results show that the mismatched modulo size from inaccurate power scaling factor severely degrades the performance of the VP system, especially for high order M-QAM modulation. In addition, the performance degradation is strongly related with the distribution of representation points for each M-QAM symbol. For linear ZF precoding, the performance loss from the shrinked or expanded constellation points is severe for system using high order M-QAM. In addition, to alleviate the performance degradation, we propose a VP system using partial perturbation points (PPP). By limiting the region of redundant points with vector perturbation for partial M-QAM symbols, the performance degradation due to the inaccurate power scaling factor can be alleviated. Motivated by data science, in this article, a data-clustering-assisted digital predistortion (DPD) is proposed to linearize millimeter-wave (mmWave) beamforming transmitters with multiple dynamic configurations. Based on the data analysis, similar transmitter states with different configurations can be clustered, resulting in a significant reduction of linearization states. Model complexity within the cluster can be further reduced by utilizing a penalty factor method. To validate the proposed concept, experiments were carried out on a 16-channel mmWave beamforming transmitter with configurable beam angle, operating frequency, and input power. Total 216 transmitter states can be reduced to 8, 20, and 40 states with unequal optimal model parameters for each state, without losing much performance. Most of the existing massive multi-input-multi-output (mMIMO) relaying works assume ideal transceiver hardware and spatially uncorrelated channels. A practical mMIMO relay, however, due to limited antenna spacing and the use of cost-effective equipment, usually experiences spatially-correlated channels and hardware impairments, respectively. We consider a hardware-impaired two-way full-duplex (FD) spatially-correlated mMIMO relaying with multiple MIMO FD user-pairs, and derive a closed-form spectral efficiency (SE) expression which is valid for a practical number of finite relay antennas. We use this expression to develop a quadratic transformation approach to optimize the non-convex global energy efficiency (GEE) and weighted sum energy efficiency (WSEE) metrics, which are fractional functions of optimization variables. The proposed approach first converts the fractional problem into its equivalent fraction-free counterpart, and then uses novel transformations to make the problem concave, and solve it using an iterative algorithm. We use this optimization to i) investigate the impact of spatial correlation and hardware impairments on GEE; ii) decide hardware impairment values for a tolerable reduction in GEE; and iii) investigate the impact of weights in WSEE on the users energy efficiency. In this study, we consider a space–time line code (STLC) system with $N$ transmit antennas and two receive antennas. Although the STLC system is scalable to an arbitrary number of transmit antennas, a large number of them will increase the hardware cost and complicate the implementation of the system. To resolve this practical limitation, we propose a transmit antenna selection (TAS) scheme for the $N$ -by-2 STLC system. If $S\leq N$ antennas are used for the transmission, the STLC transmitter selects the $S$ antennas such that the instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is maximized. For a comprehensive performance analysis, the instantaneous SNR of the proposed TAS is characterized in terms of the statistical mean and moment-generating function (MGF). To investigate the performance of the proposed TAS approach, the approximated expression of error rate is derived based on the MGF method. Moreover, using asymptotic analysis, we show that the proposed TAS-STLC system achieves full spatial diversity of $2N$ , while the coding gain is affected by $N$ , $S$ , and the modulation order. In this paper, we focus on intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multi-antenna communications with transceiver hardware impairments encountered in practice. In particular, we aim to maximize the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) taking into account the impact of hardware impairments, where the source transmit beamforming and the IRS reflect beamforming are jointly designed under the proposed optimization framework. To circumvent the non-convexity of the formulated design problem, we first derive a closed-form optimal solution to the source transmit beamforming. Then, for the optimization of IRS reflect beamforming, we obtain an upper bound to the optimal objective value via solving a single convex problem. A low-complexity minorization-maximization (MM) algorithm was developed to approach the upper bound. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed beamforming design is more robust to the hardware impairments than that of the conventional SNR maximized scheme. Moreover, compared to the scenario without deploying an IRS, the performance gain brought by incorporating the hardware impairments is more evident for the IRS-aided communications. The performance of the hybrid beamforming system based on the full-connected structure is close to that of the full-digital one in millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. However, due to the high complexity of circuit wiring in practical applications, it has been greatly restricted. This paper investigates the hybrid (analog/digital) beamforming design of a multiuser mmWave massive MIMO system with sub-connected structure. For this system, we focus on a sum-rate maximization probelm. Considering the joint design of the receiver, and transmitter, a two-stage design method is adopted. In the analog stage, the analog beamformer, and combiner are designed by the proposed piecewise dual joint iterative approximation (PDJIA) method, which not only can obtain closed-form solutions but also has linear property. Based on the criterion of avoiding the loss of information, the problem of digital beamforming is solved by exploiting the baseband piecewise successive approximation (BPSA) method, which can effectively increase the number of users served. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the state-of-the art MIMO hybrid beamforming design schemes, and more accurately approximates to that of the full-digital system. Imperfect Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT) is inevitable in modern wireless communication networks, and results in severe multi-user interference in multi-antenna Broadcast Channel (BC). While the capacity of multi-antenna (Gaussian) BC with perfect CSIT is known and achieved by Dirty Paper Coding (DPC), the capacity and the capacity-achieving strategy of multi-antenna BC with imperfect CSIT remain unknown. Conventional approaches therefore rely on applying communication strategies designed for perfect CSIT to the imperfect CSIT setting. In this work, we break this conventional routine and make two major contributions. First, we show that linearly precoded Rate-Splitting (RS), relying on the split of messages into common and private parts and linear precoding at the transmitter, and successive interference cancellation at the receivers, can achieve larger rate region than DPC in multi-antenna BC with partial CSIT. Second, we propose a novel scheme, denoted as Dirty Paper Coded Rate-Splitting (DPCRS), that relies on RS to split the user messages into common and private parts, and DPC to encode the private parts. We show that the rate region of DPCRS in Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) BC with partial CSIT is enlarged beyond that of conventional DPC and that of linearly precoded RS. Gaining benefits from the capability of RS to partially decode the interference and partially treat interference as noise, DPCRS is less sensitive to CSIT inaccuracies, networks loads and user deployments compared with DPC and other existing transmission strategies. In this article, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channel model for air-to-ground (A2G) communications in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) environments, where the UAV transmitter and ground receiver are in motion in the air and on the ground, respectively. A novel angular estimation algorithm is proposed to estimate the real-time azimuth angle of departure (AAoD), elevation angle of departure (EAoD), azimuth angle of arrival (AAoA), and elevation angle of arrival (EAoA) based on the non-stationary nature of the channel model. In the model, we investigate the time-varying spatial cross-correlation functions (CCFs) and temporal auto-correlation functions (ACFs) with respect to the different moving directions and velocities of the UAV transmitter and ground receiver. Furthermore, we derive and study the Doppler power spectral densities (PSDs) and power delay profiles (PDPs) of the proposed channel model. Numerical results show that characteristics of the proposed channel model are very close to those of practical measurements, which provide a new and practical approach to evaluate the performance of next generation UAV-MIMO communication systems. The problem of polar coding for an arbitrary sequence of independent binary-input memoryless symmetric (BMS) channels $\left \{{W_{i}}\right \}_{i=1}^{N}$ is considered. Such a sequence of channels is referred to as a non-stationary sequence of channels and arises in applications where data symbols experience different and independent channel characteristics. The sequence of channels is assumed to be completely known to both the transmitter and the receiver (a coherent scenario). Also, at each code block transmission, each of the channels is used only once. In other words, a codeword of length $N$ is constructed and then the $i$ -th encoded bit is transmitted over $W_{i}$. The goal is to operate at a rate $R$ close to the average of the symmetric capacities of $W_{i}$ ’s, denoted by $\overline {I}_{N}$. To this end, we construct a polar coding scheme using Arıkan’s channel polarization transform in combination with certain permutations at each polarization level and certain skipped operations. In particular, given a non-stationary sequence of BMS channels $\left \{{W_{i}}\right \}_{i=1}^{N}$ and $P_{e}$ , where $0 < P_{e} < 1$ , we construct a polar code of length $N$ and rate $R$ guaranteeing a block error probability of at most $P_{e}$ for transmission over $\left \{{W_{i}}\right \}_{i=1}^{N}$ such that $N \leqslant \frac {\kappa }{(\overline {I}_{N}- R)^{\mu }}$ , where $\mu $ is a constant and $\kappa $ is a constant depending on $P_{e}$ and $\mu $. We study the generalized degrees of freedom (gDoF) of the noncoherent diamond (parallel relay) wireless network with asymmetric distributions of link strengths. We use the noncoherent block-fading model introduced by Marzetta and Hochwald, where no channel state information is available at the transmitters or at the receivers and the channels remain constant for a coherence time of $T$ symbol durations. We first derive an upper bound for the capacity of this channel and then derive the optimal structure for the solution of the upper bound optimization problem. Using the optimal structure, we solve the upper bound optimization problem in terms of its gDoF. Using insights from our upper bound signaling solution, we devise an achievability strategy based on a novel scheme that we call train-scale quantize-map-forward (TS-QMF). This scheme uses training in the links from the source to the relays, scaling and quantizing at the relays combined with nontraining-based schemes. We show the optimality of this scheme by comparing it to the upper bound in terms of the gDoF. In noncoherent point-to-point multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channels, where the fading realization is unknown to the transmitter and the receiver, an important tradeoff between communication and channel learning was revealed by Zheng and Tse, by demonstrating that not all the available antennas might be used, as it is suboptimal to learn all their channel parameters. Our results in this paper for the diamond network demonstrate that in certain regimes of relative channel strengths, the gDoF-optimal scheme uses a subnetwork, demonstrating a similar tradeoff between channel learning and communication. In some regimes, it is gDoF-optimal to do relay selection, i.e., use a part of the network. In the other regimes, even when it is essential to use the entire network, it is suboptimal to learn the channel states for all the links in the network, i.e., traditional training-based schemes are suboptimal in these regimes. This article proposes a new method to concurrently identify and compensate for the $I/Q$ imbalance in millimeter-wave (mm-wave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) direct-conversion transmitters (Txs) using a single transmitter observation receiver (TOR) fed with the combined outputs of the individual Tx chains. In addition, a signal training approach is proposed that minimizes in-band distortion while maintaining acceptable performance in the out-of-band region. The proposed $I/Q$ imbalance mitigation method is validated by both the simulation and measurement results, using quadrature modulators arranged in one, two, and four Tx configurations for a compensation bandwidth of 4 GHz. The simulation results demonstrate the ability of the proposed method to obtain the same performance for one, two, and four Txs after compensation using an ideal power combiner. Simulations also reveal the sensitivity of the output signal quality to the isolation of the combiner. The experimental measurement results show a normalized mean-square error improvement from 14.5% to 2.22% and 3.46% for the one and four Tx configurations, respectively, using a power combiner with limited isolation. With the continually increasing demand for higher data rate and link density as well as better network coverage, wireless networks, including 5G-enabled vehicular communication network (VCN), will be designed/deployed to cover more overlapping areas, experiencing more severe interferences. As a result, interference becomes a key impediment to the improvement of network performance, thus requiring a thorough investigation. There have been numerous interference management (IM) methods, of which interference alignment (IA) has been receiving significant attention in recent years. IA compresses the dimension of interference subspace by confining multiple interfering signals into a finite subspace, so that the desired signal subspace may be maximized. However, when IA is applied to the situation where multiple interferences are from the same source, the interference subspace cannot be compressed due to the fact that if these interfering components are aligned in the same direction at their unintended receiver (Rx), they will become indistinguishable at their desired Rx. To solve this problem, we propose Inside-Out Precoding (IOP). With IOP, multiple data streams that may cause interference to the other Rx are at first pre-processed at the interfering transmitter (Tx), by employing an inner-precoder which makes the streams spatially separable, and then, by exploiting interactions among wireless signals, multiple interfering components are treated as an effective interference to which an outer-precoder is applied, so that multiple interferences can be compressed into one dimension at the interfered Rx while making them distinguishable at their desired Rx. We present two IOP realizations — forward IOP (F-IOP) and backward IOP (B-IOP) — and propose a protocol to realize the synchronization of processing parameters at the interfering Tx and its intended Rx so that the Rx can adapt itself to the precoding strategy employed at the Tx side. Our in-depth analysis and simulation results have shown that the proposed IOP can effectively manage multiple interferences from the same source while guaranteeing the performance of transmission from the interfering Tx to its intended Rx. We consider backward crosstalk in $2\times 2$ transmitters, which is caused by crosstalk from the outputs of the transmitter to the inputs or by the combination of output crosstalk and impedance mismatch. We analyze its impact via feedback networks together with third-order power amplifier non-linearities. We utilize the Bussgang decomposition to express the distorted output signals of the transmitter as a linear transformation of the input plus uncorrelated distortion. The normalized mean-square errors (NMSEs) between the distorted and desired amplified signals are expressed analytically and the optimal closed-form power back-off that minimizes the worst NMSE of the two branches is derived. In the second part of the paper, an achievable spectral efficiency (SE) is presented for the communication from this “dirty” transmitter to another single-antenna receiver. The SE-maximizing precoder is optimally found by exploiting the hardware characteristics. Furthermore, the optimal power back-off is analyzed for two sub-optimal precoders, which either do not exploit any hardware knowledge or only partial knowledge. The simulation results show that the performance of these sub-optimal precoders is close-to-optimal. In this work, we investigate the problem of secure broadcasting over block-fading wiretap channels with limited channel knowledge at the transmitter. More particularly, we analyze the effect of having a finite rate feedback on the throughput of multi-user broadcast wiretap channels. We consider that the transmitter is only provided by a $b$ -bits feedback of the main channel state information (CSI) sent by each legitimate receiver, at the beginning of each fading block, over error-free public links with limited capacity. Also, we assume that the transmitter is aware of the statistics of the eavesdropper’s CSI but not of its channel’s realizations. Under these assumptions of CSI uncertainty, we characterize the ergodic secrecy capacity of the system when a common message is broadcasted to all legitimate receivers, the ergodic secrecy sum-capacity when multiple independent messages are transmitted, and the ergodic secrecy capacity region for the broadcast channel with confidential messages (BCCM). In all three scenarios, we show that as long as the transmitter has some knowledge of the main CSI, obtained even through a 1-bit CSI feedback, a non-zero secrecy rate can still be achieved. The impact of having the feedback sent over a binary erasure channel (BEC) is also investigated for the BCCM case. Here again, and even with the possibility of having the feedback bits erased, a positive secrecy rate can still be achieved as long as the erasure event is not a probability-one event. An asymptotic analysis of the obtained results is provided for the high SNR regime, and the scaling law of the system, when the number of legitimate receivers is large, is also presented. The multi-input multi-output (MIMO) transmission against a smart attacker has recently been formulated as a non-collaborative game, in which the reinforcement learning-based transmitter is devised to suppress the attack motivation of the malicious attacker for more secure transmission. Basically, large enough transmission power is needed to obtain the Nash equilibrium in favour of the MIMO transmitter. When energy efficiency is required, a secure MIMO transmission design with reasonable energy efficiency will become highly desirable. This study focuses on how to make the MIMO transmitter not only resist malicious attacker but also realise reasonable energy efficiency. To this end, a new game between the MIMO transmitter and the malicious attacker is formulated to take into account the energy efficiency of the MIMO transmitter. Since the energy efficiency requirement tends to reduce the transmission power by the MIMO transmitter, which may degrade the realised security performance in an adverse environment, the probabilistic transmission strategy was employed to further enhance the secure transmission. The analysis results unveil that the proposed energy-efficient secure MIMO transmission design can not only ensure reasonable security performance but also noticeably improve energy efficiency performance. Conventional Mills Cross architecture suffers from poor direction-of-arrival angle estimation accuracy in the dimension that the transmitter is aligned. To improve the estimation accuracy, a space-time coded, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) direction finding method, with complementary codes is presented. The performance of the suggested MIMO Mills Cross architecture has been evaluated by underwater field experiments. Field experiments confirm the feasibility of the proposed approach and illustrate the performance gains. Since the proposed approach does not require any changes in the conventional Mills Cross hardware, the performance improvement can also be realized by a software reconfiguration for existing legacy systems. The work explores the fundamental limits of coded caching in the setting where a transmitter with potentially multiple ($N_{0}$) antennas serves different users that are assisted by a smaller number of caches. Under the assumption of uncoded cache placement, the work derives the exact optimal worst-case delay and DoF, for a broad range of user-to-cache association profiles where each such profile describes how many users are helped by each cache. This is achieved by presenting an information-theoretic converse based on index coding that succinctly captures the impact of the user-to-cache association, as well as by presenting a coded caching scheme that optimally adapts to the association profile by exploiting the benefits of encoding across users that share the same cache. The work reveals a powerful interplay between shared caches and multiple senders/antennas, where we can now draw the striking conclusion that, as long as each cache serves at least $N_{0}$ users, adding a single degree of cache-redundancy can yield a DoF increase equal to $N_{0}$ , while at the same time — irrespective of the profile — going from 1 to $N_{0}$ antennas reduces the delivery time by a factor of $N_{0}$. A frequency-domain system identification-based multiple-input multiple-output (FDSI-MIMO)-SAR algorithm using multiple phase center multiple azimuth beams is proposed to obtain high-resolution wide-swath (HRWS) imaging. Frequency-division multiple access is used in such a way that each transmitter emits a conventional linear frequency-modulated (LFM) waveform modulated by a different carrier frequency and the obtained range resolution corresponds to the total transmitted bandwidth. In this article, an MIMO-SAR problem is modeled, using the principle of displaced phase center, as multiple but separate multiple-input single-output (MISO) system identification problems. The channel impulse responses of the individual MISO problems are identified in the range dimension using an FDSI-based estimation algorithm in such a way that the estimated range profile is free of interrange cell interference. In addition, the proposed algorithm does not require separating the subband waveforms at the receiver as they are processed jointly without a need to add guard bands between the adjacent subbands, which would allow utilizing the available bandwidth to the maximum efficiency. The method of synthesizing a wide transmit antenna beam from a narrow antenna beam applied in single-input multiple-output (SIMO) SAR is extended to MIMO SAR to remove the sidelobes effects of the receive beams and hence leading to the desired signal-to-noise ratio. A pulse repetition frequency lower than the Doppler bandwidth is used to obtain wide swath without experiencing aliasing in the Doppler spectrum. To realize multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with low cost and low power consumption, the use of low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DAC) is drawing significant interest. While previous studies on low-resolution DAC MIMO have focused on optimizing precoding for massive MIMO, this approach faces the limitation that the coarse resolution at the transmitter makes it difficult to construct a transmit signal close enough to the desired one when a small scale MIMO transmitter is considered as in IoT networks. To address this problem, we propose a new transmission framework that jointly performs modulation and beamforming. With the proposed scheme, a message symbol is directly mapped into a feasible transmit vector. We also develop a channel-adaptive mapping function within the proposed framework that minimizes error probability. In this paper, simple methodologies of deep learning application to conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems are presented. The deep learning technologies with deep neural network (DNN) structure, emerging technologies in various engineering areas, have been actively investigated in the field of communication engineering as well. In the physical layer of conventional communication systems, there are practical challenges of application of DNN: calculating complex number in DNN and designing proper DNN structure for a specific communication system model. This paper proposes and verifies simple solutions for the difficulty. First, we apply a basic DNN structure for signal detection of one-tap MIMO channel. Second, convolutional neural network (CNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) structures are presented for MIMO system with multipath fading channel. Our DNN structure for one-tap MIMO channel can achieve the optimal maximum likelihood detection performance, and furthermore, our CNN and RNN structures for multipath fading channel can detect the transmitted signal properly. Spatial modulation (SM) and space shift keying (SSK) techniques have the unique advantages of their single-radio-frequency (RF) structures compared with conventional multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) techniques. However, the transmission rates of these techniques are decided by the maximal switching frequency or by the minimal switching time between the RF chain and transmit antennas, which has been a bottleneck for their applications in future broadband wireless communications. To alleviate this problem, we propose a class of novel offset SM (OSM) and offset SSK (OSSK) schemes, with the aid of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. Compared with conventional SM and SSK, the proposed OSM and OSSK schemes can reduce the switching frequency of the RF chain, by introducing an offset between the connected RF chain and the index of the spatial modulated antenna. In extreme conditions, the proposed OSM and OSSK can work without RF switching while maintaining the single-RF advantage of conventional SM and SSK schemes. Through theoretical analysis, we also develop the bit-error rate (BER) performance bounds for the proposed two schemes. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed OSM and OSSK outperform their counterparts, including conventional SM, SSK, CSI-aided SM, and CSI-aided SSK, while having a simplified RF-switching structure. In this paper, a full-angle digital predistortion (DPD) technique is proposed to linearize fifth-generation (5G) millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) transmitters with low implementation complexity. It is achieved by compensating the differences of power amplifiers (PAs) in different transmitter chains first and then adopting a common digital block to linearize the whole subarray. Based on this operation, all the transmitter chains can be efficiently linearized simultaneously, providing the merits of full-angle linearization including the main beam and sidelobes. To validate the proposed idea, an mmWave full-digital beam-forming transmitter has been developed, which is operated at the center frequency of 24.75–28.5 GHz to meet the 5G candidate frequency bands. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively linearize the mmWave mMIMO transmitter in all directions, which provides a promising linearization solution for 5G mMIMO beam-forming systems. A phase-coherent technique for multiple all-digital phase-locked loops (ADPLLs) is presented and developed in this paper to target a 57–63-GHz multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter (TX) with a digital beam-steering capability. The ADPLL TX chains are first fabricated in nanoscale CMOS and then time-synchronized and frequency–phase locked by a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) evaluation board. The calibration approach for phase alignment is carried out using a cancellation method to acquire the out-of-phase state within two ADPLLs. The accuracy of beam steering and phase alignment is investigated and analyzed based on a time-domain model for ADPLL to consider the impact of phase noise. The analysis results offer the required values of the ADPLL parameters to allow a millimeter-wave (mm-wave) MIMO TX with a highly accurate digital beam-steering capability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a distributed massive multiple-input and multiple-output (DM-MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system, each of the multiple receivers receives the OFDM signals simultaneously from all transmitters intended for itself and other receivers. Due to the distributed nature of the network and the differences in propagation delays, these OFDM signals received by any receiver are most likely not synchronized. We have analyzed analytically and numerically the asynchronous reception effects on a DM-MIMO OFDM system in this paper. It is shown that the desired signal power reduction due to phase shifts caused by timing offsets is the dominant performance degrading factor. Surprisingly, the increase of various interfering power (including multiuser, inter-carrier, and inter-symbol interference) due to timing offsets is negligible when compared with the desired signal power reduction. Two per-user rate lower bounds have been developed by averaging over small-scale fading. With the aids of these two lower bounds, averaged per-user rate over small- and large-scale fading have been simulated. It is found that around 50% reduction in per-user downlink rate could occur to the majority of users due to asynchronous reception in DM-MIMO OFDM systems.
