With the increasing drilling depth of mines, the cross-complexity of fissures in the rock body, and the frequent occurrence of sudden water surges, polymer slurry, with its advantages of good permeability and strong water plugging, is increasingly used in mine grouting projects. Additional research is needed in order to further improve the grouting performance of polymer slurry, ensure the safety of mining operations, and reduce the grouting cost. In this paper, a polymer composite grouting material was prepared with diphenyl methyl diisocyanate, polyether polyol, and fly ash, as the main raw materials, with coupling agent and catalyst as auxiliary reagents. The performance of the composite grouting material in terms of mechanical properties, thermal stability, hydrophobicity, and bonding was explored. This study's findings indicated that incorporating fly ash led to notable enhancements in the thermal stability and water resistance of the polymer slurry. Furthermore, the introduction of fly ash notably raised the starting degradation temperature of the polymer, boosted the water contact angle of the composite material, and reduced the density and reaction temperature of the composite material. In addition, the catalyst and coupling agent as auxiliary reagents affected the polymers in terms of mechanical properties; in this paper, dibutyltin dilaurate was used as the catalyst, and organosilanes were used as the coupling agent. The catalyst successfully sped up the polymer's gel time, however, an excessive quantity of catalyst compromised the polymer's mechanical characteristics. The addition of organosilanes has a positive effect on the dynamic mechanical properties of the composites, fracture toughness, compression, bending, and bond strength. The preparation of rigid polyurethane foam with uniform pore size is extremely challenging. In this work, double‐effect baking powder was used as foaming agent, and rigid polyurethane foam with regular morphology was successfully prepared through semi‐prepolymerization. The rigid polyurethane foam apertures with regular morphology were controlled by the secondary release of CO2 when the content of baking powder is 0.30 part. Combined with theoretical calculation and experimental test, it is found that the particle size distribution, wall thickness, and hole shape are uniform, regular, thin, polygonal, and few broken holes. The compression strength, contact angle, and surface energy of the rigid polyurethane foam are 33.36 kPa, 109.6°, and 21.8 mJ/m2 after adding 0.20 part of double‐effect baking powder, respectively. By adjusting the amount of double‐acting baking powder, the porosity, mechanical properties and foam rate of the polyurethane foams could be significantly improved. Due to the molecular solvation effect, rigid polyurethane foams will deform in the water and oil due phase, but it can remain stable for a long time at room temperature without solvent. It provides a new method for the preparation of rigid polyurethane foam, which is expected to be widely used in transportation and other fields. This study aims to solve the problem of dynamic crack repair in concrete. Although conventional polyurethane has good strength, its tensile and shear properties are poor. It was found that nano-silicon had an overall enhancing effect on the mechanical properties of polyurethane; therefore, five sets of tests with different dosages (0%, 2%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%) were designed. The compressive, tensile, and shear mechanical properties of nano-silicon-modified polyurethanes were tested by compression, tensile, and straight shear tests, and the microscopic appearance of the materials was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that nano-silicon could enhance the mechanical properties of polyurethane. The best filling effect on polyurethane was achieved at a dosage of 5%, which increased the compressive, tensile, and shear strengths by 29.4%, 257.6%, and 202.1%, respectively, compared with the substrate. The compressive and tensile moduli in the small strain range were enhanced by 268.5% and 511.8%, respectively. After exceeding 5%, the mechanical properties of the materials decreased due to the enhanced nanoparticle agglomeration effect, which led to the appearance of voids inside the materials. The comprehensive analysis shows that nano-silicon can better enhance the mechanical properties of polyurethane with an optimal dosage of 5%, which is stronger relative to other repair materials and does not require time maintenance. Polymer biocompositions of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (P3HB) and linear polyurethanes (PU) with aromatic rings were produced by melt-blending at different P3HB/PU weight ratios (100/0, 95/5, 90/10, and 85/15). Polyurethanes have been prepared with 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate and polyethylene glycols with molar masses of 400 g/mol (PU400), 1000g/mol (PU1000), and 1500 g/mol (PU1500). The compatibility and morphology of the obtained polymer blends were determined by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effect of the polyurethane content in the biocompositions on their thermal stability and mechanical properties was investigated and compared with those of the native P3HB. It was shown that increasing the PU content in P3HB-PU compositions to 10 wt.% leads to an improvement in the mentioned properties. The obtained results demonstrated that the thermal stability and mechanical properties of P3HB were improved, particularly in terms of increasing the degradation temperature, reducing hardness, and increasing impact strength. The best thermal and mechanical properties were shown by the P3HB-PU polymer compositions containing 10 wt.% of polyurethane modifiers, especially PU1000, which was also confirmed by the morphology analysis of these biocompositions. The presence of polyurethanes in the resulting polymer biocomposites decreases their glass transition temperatures, i.e., makes the materials more flexible. The resulting polymer biocompositions have suitable mechanical properties and thermal properties within the processing conditions for the predicted application as biodegradable, short-lived products for agriculture. This pilot investigation identifies the influence that changing the process variables of curing pressure, curing temperature, and mix ratio of a polyurethane/agglomerated cork matrix has on the mechanical properties of energy absorption, Young's modulus of elasticity, and spring stiffness in safety helmets intended for micro-transport riders. The results are compared to expanded polystyrene, a material commonly used in micro-transport helmets. Mechanical testing of the various samples found that, over the range tested, curing pressure had no effect on any of the mechanical properties, while increasing amounts of resin caused a stiffer structure, and increasing curing temperature led to increased energy absorption. Consistent with the elastic modulus findings, all polyurethane/agglomerated cork test samples demonstrated higher median levels of spring stiffness, ranging from 7.1% to 61.9% greater than those found for expanded polystyrene. The sample mixed at a 1.5:1 binder/cork ratio and cured at 40 °C displayed the closest spring stiffness to EPS. While the mechanical properties of the eco-friendly polyurethane/agglomerated cork matrix did not match those of expanded polystyrene, the difference in performance found in this study is promising. Further investigation into process variables could characterise this more ecologically based matrix with equivalent energy-absorbing and structural characteristics, making it equivalent to currently used expanded polystyrene and suitable for use in micro-transport helmets. In environments with high humidity or water exposure, the performance of polyurethane materials could be adversely affected by water and its penetration, which could compromise their long-term utility. The influence of water on polyurethane materials is affected by water transport and various factors. This article summarizes the factors affecting the water absorption of polyurethane, introduces research methods for water transport in polyurethane, analyzes the pathways of water transport, and reviews the influence of water on the mechanical properties of polyurethane and its composite materials. The ultimate goal of this paper is to furnish a comprehensive theoretical foundation and a valuable reference for the research and practical application of polyurethane materials in water environments.

In this work polyurethane (PU) and phenolic foam (PF) panels were mechanically grinded and incorporated within an expanded polyurethane matrix utilized for thermal insulation, in order to reduce the use of virgin material and to promote a circular re-utilization of recycled materials. As observed by scanning electron microscopy, the formulations containing both recyclates showed a rather homogeneous cell structure, however their presence led to a strong reduction of the closed porosity. This reflected in a slight increase in the thermal conductivity, reaching maximum values of 0.030 W/m∙K in foams with 7.5%wt of PF particles. The introduction of the recyclates slightly improved the thermal stability of the PU foams and led to a general decrease in flexural and compression properties. Cone calorimetry tests demonstrated that the inclusion of PF particles reduced the peak heat release rate up to 28 % compared to neat PU foam, enhancing the fire safety of the insulating panels.

Invisible orthodontic aligners are having a great impact on tooth movement in an aesthetic and effective way. Different techniques, models, and clinical aspects have been studied for their proper use. However, the aim of this research has been to determine the effect of the shaping process on mechanical properties and their bacterial behavior. For this study, 40 original polyurethane plates and 40 identical models, obtained by hot forming the original plates, were used. The static tensile mechanical properties were studied with a Zwick testing machine using testing speeds of 5 mm/min at a temperature of 37 °C. The original plate and the aligner have been studied with a creep test by subjecting the samples to a constant tension of 30 N, and determining the elongation using a long-distance, high-resolution microscope at different time periods between 1 and 720 h. Studies of water absorption has been realized with artificial saliva for 5 h. Bacterial cultures of Streptococcus oralis and Actinomyces viscosus strains were grown on the original plates and on new and used models, to determine the proliferation of each bacterium through metabolic activity, colony-forming units, and LIVE/DEAD assays. The mechanical results showed an increase in the strength of the inserts with respect to the models obtained from 3.44 to 3.95 MPa in the elastic limit and a lower deformation capacity. It has been proven that the transition zone in the creep curves lasts longer in the original plate, producing the rapid increase in deformation at a shorter time (400 h) in the aligner. Therefore, the shaping process reduces the time of dental correction exerted by the aligner. The results of the bacterial culture assays show an increase in the number of bacterial colonies when the aligners have been used and when the polyurethane is conformed due to the internal energy of the model, with respect to the original polyurethane. It has been observed that between the original plate and the aligner there are no statistically significant differences in water absorption and therefore the forming process does not affect water absorption. Polymer materials are widely used in medicine due to their mechanical properties and biological inertness. When ion-plasma treatment is used on a polymer material, a carbonization process occurs in the surface nanolayer of the polymer sample. As a result, a surface carbonized nanolayer is formed, which has mechanical properties different from those of the substrate. This layer has good biocompatibility. The formation of a carbonized nanolayer on the surface of polymer implants makes it possible to reduce the body's reaction to a foreign body. Typically, to study the properties of a carbonized layer, flat polymer samples are used, which are treated with an ion flow perpendicular to the surface. But medical endoprostheses often have a curved surface, so ion-plasma treatment can occur at different angles to the surface. This paper presents the results of a study of the morphological and mechanical properties of a carbonized layer formed on a polyurethane surface. The dependence of these properties on the directional angle of the ion flow and its fluence has been established. To study the surface morphology and elastic properties, methods of atomic force microscopy and methods of elasticity theory were used. Background: This study explores how different post-processing methods affect the mechanical properties and degree of conversion of 3d-printed polyurethane aligners made from Tera Harz TC-85 resin. Methods: Using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the degree of conversion of liquid resin and post-processed materials was analyzed. This investigation focused on the effects of various post-curing environments (nitrogen vs. air) and rinsing protocols (centrifuge, ethanol, isopropanol, and isopropanol + water). The assessed mechanical properties were flexural modulus and hardness. Results: The degree of conversion showed no significant variance across different groups, though the polymerization environment influenced the results, accounting for 24.0% of the variance. The flexural modulus varied considerably, depending on both the rinsing protocol and the polymerization environment. The standard protocol (centrifugation followed by nitrogen polymerization) exhibited the highest flexural modulus of 1881.22 MPa. Hardness testing revealed significant differences, with isopropanol treatments showing increased resistance to wear in comparison to the centrifuge and ethanol rinse treatments. Conclusions: This study conclusively demonstrates the adverse effects of oxygen on the polymerization process, underscoring the critical need for an oxygen-free environment to optimize material properties. Notably, the ethanol rinse followed by nitrogen polymerization protocol emerged as a viable alternative to the conventional centrifuge plus nitrogen method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Porous material performs good deformation compression and has been widely used in soft actuators and sensors. In this study, a new kind of magnetorheological (MR) sponge was prepared by combining carbonyl iron particles with polyurethane porous structure. The static compressive property of MR foam was studied using a commercial rheometer. The relationship between magnetic particle composition, magnetic field and rheological properties was summarized and analyzed. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of magnetorheological sponge materials, and provides inspiration and theoretical basis for the design of soft actuators ,which may provide inspiration for novel application field.

Polymer-modified cement mortar has been increasingly used as a runway/road pavement repair material due to its improved bending strength, bonding strength, and wear resistance. The flexural strength of polyurethane–cement mortar (PUCM) is critical in achieving a desirable maintenance effect. This study aims to evaluate and optimize the flexural strength of PUCM involving nano silica (NS) using a central composite design/response surface methodology (CCD/RSM) to design and establish statistical models. The PU binder and NS were utilized as input parameters to evaluate the responses, such as compressive and flexural strength. Moreover, machine learning (ML) algorithms including artificial neural networks (ANN) and Gaussian regression process (GPR) were used. The PUCM mixtures were prepared by adding a PU binder at 0%, 10%, 15%, and 25% by weight of cement. At the same time, NS was incorporated into the mortar mixes at 0 to 3% (interval of 1%) by cement weight. The results showed that the simultaneous effect of PU binder at the optimal content and NS improved the performance of PUCM. Adding NS to the mortar mixture mitigated some of the strength lost due to the PU binder, which remarkably reduces the strength properties at a high content. The optimized PUCM can be obtained by partly adding 3.5% PU binder and 2.93% NS particles by the weight of cement. The performance of the machine learning algorithms was tested using performance indicators such as the determination of coefficient (R2), mean absolute error (MAE), mean-square error (MSE), and root-mean-square error (RMSE). The GPR algorithm outperformed the ANN with higher R2 and lower MAE values in the training and testing phases. The GPR can predict flexural strength with 90% accuracy, while ANN can predict it with 75% accuracy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the incidence of cardiovascular disease has increased annually, and the demand for artificial blood vessels has been increasing. Due to the formation of thrombosis and stenosis after implantation, the application of many materials in the human body has been inhibited. Therefore, the choice of surface modification process is very important. In this paper, small-diameter polyurethane artificial blood vessels were prepared through electrospinning, and their surfaces were treated with plasma to improve their biological properties. The samples before and after plasma treatment were characterized by SEM, contact angle, XPS, and tensile testing; meanwhile, the cell compatibility and blood compatibility were evaluated. The results show that there are no significant changes to the fiber morphology or diameter distribution on the surface of the sample before and after plasma treatment. Plasma treatment can increase the proportion of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of the sample and improve its wettability, thereby increasing the infiltration ability of cells and promoting cell proliferation. Plasma treatment can reduce the risk of hemolysis, and does not cause platelet adhesion. Due to the etching effect of plasma, the mechanical properties of the samples decreased with the extension of plasma treatment time, which should be used as a basis to balance the mechanical property and biological property of artificial blood vessels. But on the whole, plasma treatment has positive significance for improving the comprehensive performance of samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research presents an experimental investigation into the mechanical, thermal, and shape memory behavior of a thermos-responsive polyurethane (PU) reinforced with 0–1.0 wt % of MXene (Ti3C2Tx) nanofiller. The PU/MXene nanocomposites were fabricated using sonication and injection molding route. The 0.5 wt % PU/MXene nanocomposite showed the optimum mechanical properties i.e. tensile modulus, tensile strength, and hardness value, which are improved by 22, 281, and 19 %, respectively, compared to pure PU. The improvement is observed in melting temperature (Tm), the heat of melting (hm), crystallization temperature (Tc), and the heat of crystallization (hc) results. The percentage of crystallinity revealed enhancements of 6 %, 18 %, 24 %, and 34 % for 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.5 wt % PU/MXene samples respectively compared to pure PU. The findings from the shape recovery experiments demonstrated that the inclusion of MXene has no impact on both the shape fixity and shape recovery performance. The PU/MXene nanocomposite with improved mechanical and thermal properties can find potential applications in robotics actuators, medical devices, sensors, etc.

Polyurethane is widely used to toughen epoxy resins due to its excellent comprehensive properties and compatibility. However, some demerits of polyurethanes limit their applications, such as the harsh storage condition of isocyanate-terminated polyurethane (ITPU), the limited amount of ITPU in epoxy resin, and using solvents during the preparation of polyurethane-modified epoxy resins. To address these issues, in this study, we reported a facile and green approach for preparing epoxy-terminated polyurethane (EPU)-modified epoxy resins with different EPU contents. It was found that the toughness of the epoxy resin was significantly improved after the addition of EPU. When the EPU content was 30 wt%, the elongation at break and toughness were improved by 358.36% and 73.56%, respectively. In comparison, the toughening effect of EPU outperformed that of ITPU. Moreover, the high content of EPU did not significantly decrease the glass transition temperature and had little effect on the thermal stability of the epoxy resin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The viscoelastic property is a crucial parameter for evaluating the feasibility of the foam to be used as pressure relief. This work aims to perform experimental measurements to determine the dependence of the viscous behavior of polyurethane foam on density and energy dissipation. Experimental measurements were realized for three types of polyurethane foams with different densities soft, medium and hard. The compression tests at room temperature characterized the mechanical properties of these samples. Furthermore, the structures of the samples were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A proportional relationship was observed between the density of polyurethane (PU) foam and the tolerated strength at 90% compression. This material has an excellent remanence (persistence) which showed by the creep experiments at constant stress (2, 5, 10 N) for 6 h. Young Modulus, relaxation time and dissipation coefficient (DE) were also calculated from the stress-strain curve. Moreover, softening behavior, which is responsible for pressure relief, was measured by a cyclic compression test. This paper assesses the capacity of polyurethane to effectively maintain interfacial pressure below the critical threshold of 32 mm of mercury, which represents a significant risk level for the development of pressure sores.

Polyurethane (PU)-based Mortar (PUM) has a short curing time and high bonding ability as a new potential repair material. However, its low strength significantly limits its application in maintaining civil engineering structures. In this paper, the effect of micro steel fiber (MSF) with different aspect ratio and different dosages on the compressive strength, flexural strength, and elastic modulus of PUM was investigated. The performance of fiber at different embedment depths on the interfacial bond properties between the PU-based mortar mixture and steel fiber was explored through the fiber pull-out test. Additionally, steel fiber’s reinforcing and toughening effects were analyzed, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the microstructure of PU-based mortar reinforced with steel fiber. The results showed that the mechanical performance of PUM incorporated with two fiber types up to 3% was significantly improved. The bond strength between the micro steel fiber and PUM mixture improved with the increase in fiber volume fraction in the PU mixture. Similarly, the pull-out load and the pull-out work are increased with the increase in depth, while the interface bond strength is decreased. Additionally, based on the result obtained, the reinforcing effect of MSF in PUM can effectively refine the pores and bridge the crack formation.

Reinforced concrete poles, wooden poles and steel poles are commonly used in communication pole line engineering, but there are numerous shortcomings, which can’t be ignored. In this paper, a scheme of applying glass fiber reinforced polyurethane composites (GFRP) instead of traditional materials to manufacture poles in communication pole line engineering is proposed. The technical properties and bending moment of GFRP poles were studied through material test and bending performance test. Furthermore, Abaqus was used to carry out finite element analysis on GFRP pole, and physical and mechanical properties of GFRP and traditional materials were compared. Referring to GB/T 51421–2020 and DL/T 5219–2014, structural design of GFRP pole and foundation was carried out, respectively. Finally, economic benefit of GFRP pole was analyzed, then an innovative installation method of GFRP pole was proposed. Results show that GFRP has high stiffness, light weight, high strength and durability. Besides, GFRP pole has sufficient flexural bearing capacity, and foundation has excellent overturning stability, which lays a foundation for the application of GFRP in communication pole line engineering.

Thermal insulating composites are indispensable in electronic applications; however, their poor thermal conductivity and flexibility have become bottlenecks for improving device operations. Hexagonal boron nitride (BN) has excellent thermal conductivity and insulating properties and is an ideal filler for preparing thermally insulating polymer composites. In this study, we report a method to fabricate BN/polyurethane (PU) composites using an improved nonsolvent-induced phase separation method with binary solvents to improve the thermal performance and flexibility of PU. The stress and strain of BN60/PU are 7.52 ± 0.87 MPa and 707.34 ± 38.34%, respectively. As prepared, BN60/PU composites with unordered BN exhibited high thermal conductivity and a volume resistivity of 0.653 W/(m·K) and 23.9 × 1012 Ω·cm, which are 218.71 and 39.77% higher than that of pure PU, respectively. Moreover, these composite films demonstrated a thermal diffusion ability and maintained good integrity after 1000 bending cycles, demonstrating good mechanical and thermal reliability for practical use. Natural fibres reinforced polymeric composites are examples of green composites. Commodities polymers derived from fossil sources have volatile organic compounds in their compositions. Polyurethane derived from castor oil is produced from renewable sources, it has no volatile organic compounds in its composition and presents biodegradability. This study aims to evaluate physical-, mechanical- and thermal properties of composites of Araucaria pine nut shell vegetable fibres as reinforcement and polyurethane derived from castor oil (PU) as matrix. The composites were produced with 20 wt.%, 35 wt.% and 50 wt.% of PU. The 100% PU (used as control samples) properties were assessed by flexural strength, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Composites panels properties were assessed by the following techniques/approaches volumetric density, water absorption, thickness swelling, flexural strength, TGA, FTIR and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Composites with 35%PU presented flexural strength of 51.55 MPa, a density of 1018 kg/m³, water absorption of 7.95% and swelling in thickness over 24 hours of 5.36%, these results are better when compared to similar composites made with pine nut shell and thermoset polymer. The study focused on how the fibre-matrix adhesion at the interface plays a role in the composite reinforcement.

Nanocoatings formed by various plasma and chemical methods on the surface of polymeric materials have unique properties. However, the applicability of polymeric materials with nanocoatings under specific temperature and mechanical conditions depends on the physical and mechanical properties of the coating. The determination of Young's modulus is a task of paramount importance since it is widely used in calculations of the stress–strain state of structural elements and structures in general. Small thicknesses of nanocoatings limit the choice of methods for determining the modulus of elasticity. In this paper, we propose a method for determining the Young's modulus for a carbonized layer formed on a polyurethane substrate. For its implementation, the results of uniaxial tensile tests were used. This approach made it possible to obtain patterns of change in the Young's modulus of the carbonized layer depending on the intensity of ion-plasma treatment. These regularities were compared with regularities of changes in the molecular structure of the surface layer caused by plasma treatment of different intensity. The comparison was made on the basis of correlation analysis. The development of skin-compatible polyurethane materials with excellent wide-temperature range and anti-aging self-healing properties is considered crucial for modern applications. However, few polyurethane materials can achieve these characteristics simultaneously because of the chemical bond activity. Here, we report a wide-temperature range and antiaging self-healing polyurethane material with superior mechanical features. At -40 °C, the polyurethane exhibits a selfhealing efficiency of 72.6%, with a tensile strength of ~7.4 MPa and elongation at break of ~1424.5%. At 60 °C, its selfhealing efficiency reached 93.6%, with an elongation at break of 1922.2% without significant reduction of the tensile strength. Notably, its low-temperature self-healing efficiency was 79.3 and 72.6%, respectively, at -20 and-40 °C, and the samples showed some degree of self-healing, even at -60 and -80°C. Meanwhile, the polyurethane showed excellent anti-aging performance, and its self-healing properties were sufficiently high after aging at 60 °C for 7 days. The designed polyurethane is expected to offer a promising platform for fabricating materials for electronic skin applications, wearable electronic devices, flexible displays, and soft robotics. Polymer-modified cement mortar has been increasingly used as a runway/road pavement repair material due to its improved bending strength, bonding strength, and wear resistance. The flexural strength of polyurethane–cement mortar (PUCM) is critical in achieving a desirable maintenance effect. This study aims to evaluate and optimize the flexural strength of PUCM involving nano silica (NS) using a central composite design/response surface methodology (CCD/RSM) to design and establish statistical models. The PU binder and NS were utilized as input parameters to evaluate the responses, such as compressive and flexural strength. Moreover, machine learning (ML) algorithms including artificial neural networks (ANN) and Gaussian regression process (GPR) were used. The PUCM mixtures were prepared by adding a PU binder at 0%, 10%, 15%, and 25% by weight of cement. At the same time, NS was incorporated into the mortar mixes at 0 to 3% (interval of 1%) by cement weight. The results showed that the simultaneous effect of PU binder at the optimal content and NS improved the performance of PUCM. Adding NS to the mortar mixture mitigated some of the strength lost due to the PU binder, which remarkably reduces the strength properties at a high content. The optimized PUCM can be obtained by partly adding 3.5% PU binder and 2.93% NS particles by the weight of cement. The performance of the machine learning algorithms was tested using performance indicators such as the determination of coefficient (R2), mean absolute error (MAE), mean-square error (MSE), and root-mean-square error (RMSE). The GPR algorithm outperformed the ANN with higher R2 and lower MAE values in the training and testing phases. The GPR can predict flexural strength with 90% accuracy, while ANN can predict it with 75% accuracy.

Background: This study explores how different post-processing methods affect the mechanical properties and degree of conversion of 3d-printed polyurethane aligners made from Tera Harz TC-85 resin. Methods: Using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the degree of conversion of liquid resin and post-processed materials was analyzed. This investigation focused on the effects of various post-curing environments (nitrogen vs. air) and rinsing protocols (centrifuge, ethanol, isopropanol, and isopropanol + water). The assessed mechanical properties were flexural modulus and hardness. Results: The degree of conversion showed no significant variance across different groups, though the polymerization environment influenced the results, accounting for 24.0% of the variance. The flexural modulus varied considerably, depending on both the rinsing protocol and the polymerization environment. The standard protocol (centrifugation followed by nitrogen polymerization) exhibited the highest flexural modulus of 1881.22 MPa. Hardness testing revealed significant differences, with isopropanol treatments showing increased resistance to wear in comparison to the centrifuge and ethanol rinse treatments. Conclusions: This study conclusively demonstrates the adverse effects of oxygen on the polymerization process, underscoring the critical need for an oxygen-free environment to optimize material properties. Notably, the ethanol rinse followed by nitrogen polymerization protocol emerged as a viable alternative to the conventional centrifuge plus nitrogen method.

Polymer materials are widely used in medicine due to their mechanical properties and biological inertness. When ion-plasma treatment is used on a polymer material, a carbonization process occurs in the surface nanolayer of the polymer sample. As a result, a surface carbonized nanolayer is formed, which has mechanical properties different from those of the substrate. This layer has good biocompatibility. The formation of a carbonized nanolayer on the surface of polymer implants makes it possible to reduce the body’s reaction to a foreign body. Typically, to study the properties of a carbonized layer, flat polymer samples are used, which are treated with an ion flow perpendicular to the surface. But medical endoprostheses often have a curved surface, so ion-plasma treatment can occur at different angles to the surface. This paper presents the results of a study of the morphological and mechanical properties of a carbonized layer formed on a polyurethane surface. The dependence of these properties on the directional angle of the ion flow and its fluence has been established. To study the surface morphology and elastic properties, methods of atomic force microscopy and methods of elasticity theory were used. The strength properties of the carbonized layer were studied using a stretching device combined with a digital optical microscope.

In recent years, the incidence of cardiovascular disease has increased annually, and the demand for artificial blood vessels has been increasing. Due to the formation of thrombosis and stenosis after implantation, the application of many materials in the human body has been inhibited. Therefore, the choice of surface modification process is very important. In this paper, small-diameter polyurethane artificial blood vessels were prepared through electrospinning, and their surfaces were treated with plasma to improve their biological properties. The samples before and after plasma treatment were characterized by SEM, contact angle, XPS, and tensile testing; meanwhile, the cell compatibility and blood compatibility were evaluated. The results show that there are no significant changes to the fiber morphology or diameter distribution on the surface of the sample before and after plasma treatment. Plasma treatment can increase the proportion of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of the sample and improve its wettability, thereby increasing the infiltration ability of cells and promoting cell proliferation. Plasma treatment can reduce the risk of hemolysis, and does not cause platelet adhesion. Due to the etching effect of plasma, the mechanical properties of the samples decreased with the extension of plasma treatment time, which should be used as a basis to balance the mechanical property and biological property of artificial blood vessels. But on the whole, plasma treatment has positive significance for improving the comprehensive performance of samples.

In this study, the effect of moisture on the elastic and failure properties of elastomeric polyurethane (EPU 40) 3D printed via Vat Photopolymerization was investigated. EPU 40 samples were printed, and uniaxial tensile tests were performed on Dry-fresh, Dry-aged (eight months aged), and after various times of being immersed in water (0–8 months). Elastic response, initial stiffness, failure strength, and failure elongation were analyzed. Besides, gravimetric analysis was performed to determine the increase in weight and thickness after water immersion. The elastic response was fitted by the Arruda-Boyce constitutive model. Results show that initial stiffness decreased after immersion (mean 6.8 MPa dry vs. 6.3 MPa immersed p-value 0.002). Contrary, the initial stiffness increased due to physical aging under a dry state from a mean 6.3 MPa to 6.9 MPa (p = 0.006). The same effect was observed for stiffness parameter G of the constitutive model, while the limit stretch parameter λ L was not affected by either aging. The 95% confidence intervals for strength and failure stretch were 5.27–9.48 MPa and 2.18–2.86, respectively, and were not affected either by immersion time or by physical aging. The median diffusion coefficient was 3.8 · 10 − 12   m ^ 2 / s . The immersion time has a significant effect only on stiffness, while oxidative aging has an inverse effect on the mechanical properties compared to water immersion. The healing efficiency in self-healing materials is bound by the ability to form blends between the prepolymer and curing agent. One of the problems in the development of self-healing polymers is the reduced affinity of the bismaleimide curing agent for the elastomeric furan-containing matrix. Even when stoichiometric amounts of both components are applied, incompatibility of components can significantly reduce the effectiveness of self-healing, and lead to undesirable side effects, such as crystallization of the curing agent, in the thickness and on the surface. This is exactly what we have seen in the development of linear and cross-linked PUs using BMI as a hardener. In this work, we present a new series of the di- and tetrafuranic isocyanate-related ureas—promising curing agents for the development of polyurethanes-like self-healing materials via the Diels–Alder reaction. The commonly used isocyanates (4,4′-Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, MDI; 2,4-Tolylene diisocyanate, TDI; and Hexamethylene diisocyanate, HDI) and furfurylamine, difurfurylamine, and furfuryl alcohol (derived from biorenewables) as furanic compounds were utilized for synthesis. The remendable polyurethane for testing was synthesized from a maleimide-terminated prepolymer and one of the T-series urea. Self-healing properties were investigated by thermal analysis. Molecular mass was determined by gel permeation chromatography. The properties of the new polymer were compared with polyurethane from a furan-terminated analog. Visual tests showed that the obtained material has thermally induced self-healing abilities. One of the most important methods of controlling the properties of concrete and cement-based materials is to control the rate and kinetics of cement hydration. In the present study, novel flexible polyurethane-decorated MgO nanohybrids were synthesized using a simple chemical method, added to cement paste in different amounts, and utilized as an effective mechanical performance-enhancing factor for cement paste. It was observed that by adding 3 wt% synthesized PU-MgO nanohybrids to cement paste, its mechanical properties were improved and its compressive strength and flexural strength were increased by up to 13% and 15%, respectively, compared to the plain cement, after 45 days. The effect mechanism of adding PU–MgO nanoparticles on the properties of the cement paste was investigated. How to improve the stability and processability of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite quantum dots (OHPQD) is an important topic in recent research. In this work, the stability and machinability of OHPQD were improved by blending with PU elastomer. The CsPbBr3-PU composites can be achieved easily by pouring molding process with rather excellent humidity and thermal stability. The tensile strength of 14 MPa and elongation of 580% at break of PU/CsPbBr3 elastomer composites with self-repair properties were obtained, which was attributed to the introduction of disulfide bonds. In environments with high humidity or water exposure, the performance of polyurethane materials could be adversely affected by water and its penetration, which could compromise their long-term utility. The influence of water on polyurethane materials is affected by water transport and various factors. This article summarizes the factors affecting the water absorption of polyurethane, introduces research methods for water transport in polyurethane, analyzes the pathways of water transport, and reviews the influence of water on the mechanical properties of polyurethane and its composite materials. In this work polyurethane (PU) and phenolic foam (PF) panels were mechanically grinded and incorporated within an expanded polyurethane matrix utilized for thermal insulation, in order to reduce the use of virgin material and to promote a circular re-utilization of recycled materials. As observed by scanning electron microscopy, the formulations containing both recyclates showed a rather homogeneous cell structure, however their presence led to a strong reduction of the closed porosity. This reflected in a slight increase in the thermal conductivity, reaching maximum values of 0.030 W/m∙K in foams with 7.5%wt of PF particles. The introduction of the recyclates slightly improved the thermal stability of the PU foams and led to a general decrease in flexural and compression properties. Cone calorimetry tests demonstrated that the inclusion of PF particles reduced the peak heat release rate up to 28 % compared to neat PU foam, enhancing the fire safety of the insulating panels. • Mechanical recycling of PU and PF foams for the development of more eco-sustainable expanded polyurethane insulating panels. • Foams with homogeneous cell structure and notable thermal insulation capability. • Reduced combustion rates are observed for the foams containing recycled material. The development of self-healing materials has enabled the production of more reliable and intelligent materials. However, resolving the conflict between mechanical strength and self-healing efficiency as well as limited repair options of the self-healing materials is still the most pressing scientific challenge. In this study, a self-healing polyurethane with multiple repair methods is prepared by introducing disulfide bonds into thermo-reversible imine bonds-based polyurethane. The resultant polyurethane exhibits impressive comprehensive mechanical properties and preeminent repair capabilities. More importantly, damages can be repaired through various routes such as room temperature, moderate temperature, hair dryer blowing, and ethylenediamine assistance treatments. The superior mechanical properties, repetitive self-healing performance, and multiple options for repair is attributed to the cooperation of thermally reversible imine and disulfide exchanges, thermal motion of molecular chains, and dissociation/regeneration of hydrogen bonds. So this research provides numerous ideal options for repairing cracks and other damages in materials used in construction industry under different usage environments. Consequently, high-quality repairs, improved efficiency, and extended service life of construction engineering materials can be ensured. The durability of cement-based materials plays a significant role in controlling their life cycle. Bio-based polyurethane (Castor oil) was used to improve the durability and mechanical properties of two types of cement mortar, namely: Ordinary Portland cement (PCM-mortar) and rapid hardening Portland cement (RHPC-mortar). To investigate the effects of polyurethane (PU) binder; therefore, experimental tests, including flowability, rate of water absorption, early and dry restrained shrinkage properties, compressive strength, and flexural strength, were performed on the two mortar types. Moreover, the shrinkage properties were estimated using a restrained shrinkage eccentric ring device (RSERD) to improve cracks observation. The PU binder was added to the mortar mixture at 0 %, 15 %, and 25 % by cement weight. The result indicates that the optimum PU binder content (15 %) improves the flexural strength of PCM-mortar at 3 d, 7 d, and 28 d by 10.1 %, 0.93 %, and 10.62 %, respectively, and the flexural strength of RHPC-mortar at 3 d, 7 d, and 28 d was increased by 6.93 %, 1.78 %, and 1.74 %. However, a reduction in the compressive strength was observed. The workability of PU-cement mortar reduced with optimum PU binder content and increased with higher PU binder. The flow-ability percentage drop index revealed that PU-cement mortars containing 25 %PU from the PCM and RHPC- mortars showed lower FPI values of −3.57 % and −8.69 %, respectively. The RSERD mortar specimen controls the cracks propagation as expected crack occurred only on the eccentric side. None of the PU-cement mortar exhibited crack propagation for 182 d. The cracking time of PCM-PU0 and RHPC-PU0 are 104 h and 87.2 h, respectively. The water absorption capacity of PCM and RHPC-mortar was reduced by 67.97 % and 23.46 %, respectively. The PU could be regarded as a suitable candidate for improving cracking resistance and reducing the water absorption rate of cement-based composites.

A family of transparent polyisocyanurate-polyurethane (PUR-PIR) aerogels with an interesting combination of physical properties were synthesized. First, their textural properties were analyzed aiming to study catalyst influence on the final porous structures and densities. Their thermal conductivities were measured at different temperatures allowing observation of a clear trend relating the initial formulation with the porous structure and reaching values as low as 12 mW/mK, the lowest found in the literature for aerogels based on this polymer matrix. Contributions to thermal conductivity were calculated, improving the understanding of the porous structure-insulating performance relationship. Moreover, their mechanical properties were studied (elastic modulus, stress at different strains and elastic behavior). The aerogels showed tunable stiffness (elastic modulus from 6.32 to 0.13 MPa) by changing the catalyst concentration and significant elasticity. Thus, super-insulating transparent PUR-PIR aerogels with tailored mechanical properties were obtained opening a wide range of potential applications in the energy, building, automotive and aeronautical sectors, among others. The exceptional insulation of silica aerogels was reached at the same time that their general brittleness was improved while keeping good transparency to visible light (85%, 650 nm). Polyurethane is widely used to toughen epoxy resins due to its excellent comprehensive properties and compatibility. However, some demerits of polyurethanes limit their applications, such as the harsh storage condition of isocyanate-terminated polyurethane (ITPU), the limited amount of ITPU in epoxy resin, and using solvents during the preparation of polyurethane-modified epoxy resins. To address these issues, in this study, we reported a facile and green approach for preparing epoxy-terminated polyurethane (EPU)-modified epoxy resins with different EPU contents. It was found that the toughness of the epoxy resin was significantly improved after the addition of EPU. When the EPU content was 30 wt%, the elongation at break and toughness were improved by 358.36% and 73.56%, respectively. In comparison, the toughening effect of EPU outperformed that of ITPU. Moreover, the high content of EPU did not significantly decrease the glass transition temperature and had little effect on the thermal stability of the epoxy resin.

The valorization of industrial waste is a hot topic toward circular economy and sustainability. Several wastes have been proposed as resources for different production processes; however, others are still disposed to landfill or waste-to-energy plants. For the first time, this work suggests a sustainable alternative to managing cork waste from bottle caps manufacturing; this is generated by a local company at about 220,000 m3/year. The powder waste has a 0.063–1 mm particle size and is mainly composed of cork, polyurethane adhesive, and paraffin. Its valorization is proposed as filler in construction materials such as lime-based mortar (1–4 wt%) and polyurethane (5–15 wt%). Thermal, spectroscopic, and physical characterizations are performed on the cork waste, and mainly result in a low apparent density (340 kg/m3) and high-water absorption (177%). Cork properties allow consideration of extra water in the mortar mix and improve lightness without significantly affecting compressive, bending strength, and thermal insulation. Cork waste in polyurethanes promotes a color change, slightly increases the density (up to 12.5%), and still results in producing a thermally insulating material (<0.06 W/mK). Considering the promising results, this study demonstrates the feasibility of using the manufacturing waste from cork bottle caps to produce green construction materials, thus upgrading it from waste to secondary raw material. Cellulose pulp (CP), polyurethane (PU), and curcumin-based biocompatible composite films were prepared using a simple cost-effective method. Significant structural and microstructural changes were studied using FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, and SEM. The 5% and 10% gravimetric losses of the CP/PU/curcumin composite were found to be in the range 87.2–182.3 °C and 166.7–249.8 °C, respectively. All the composites exhibited single Tg values in the range 147.4–154.2 °C. The tensile strength of CP was measured to be 93.2 MPa, which dropped to 14.1 MPa for the 1:0.5 CP/PU composite and then steadily increased to 30.5 MPa with further addition of PU. The elongation at the break of the composites decreased from 8.1 to 3.7% with the addition of PU. The addition of PU also improved the water vapor permeability (3.96 × 10−9 to 1.75 × 10−9 g m−1 s−1 Pa−1) and swelling ratio (285 to 202%) of the CP composite films. The CP/PU/curcumin composite exhibited good antioxidant activity and no cytotoxicity when tested on the HaCat cell line. The visual appearance and UV transmittance (86.2–32.9% at 600 nm) of the CP composite films were significantly altered by the incorporation of PU and curcumin. In this part of the paper, we will study the behavior of PUR polyurethane at different mechanical and thermal stresses, stresses for which this material behaves very well. It is known that this material behaves well as a protective material against shocks, so it is used as protection against mechanical elements. PUR behaves excellently at uneven static stresses and dynamic stresses. That is why it is used in the construction of the rollers of medium weight mobile devices or rollers that have cam functionality, strongly required for static and dynamic contact. Here we report an environment-friendly thermally conductive composite based on polyurethane (PU) as the matrix and alumina (Al 2 O 3) as the thermally conductive filler, which presented all of the thermally conductive, notable mechanical strength and toughness, and electrical insulation with a thermal conductivity of 0.84 W/(m·K), a tensile strength of 8.09 MPa, an elongation at break of 117.51 %, and a volume resistivity of 4.3 × 1014 Ω·cm. Aluminum alloy 5052 adherends were used to manufacture the single-lap joints (SLJs) of composites with different isocyanate indices, and the single-lap shear test was used to investigate the tensile lap-shear strengths and failure modes of the joints. A critical discussion was conducted regarding the relationship between the isocyanate index (R index) and the bonding mechanism. It was found that changing the isocyanate index under the premise of fixed hard segment content enhanced the lap-shear strength of joints from 4.49 MPa to 8.24 MPa. Meanwhile, the failure mode transitioned from the adhesive failure mode to the adhesive/cohesive mixed failure mode, and then to the cohesive failure mode. Hence, the present study sheds light on the rational design of thermally conductive composites to promote the multi-functionality of thermal management applications in the new energy vehicle battery domains. Nanocoatings formed by various plasma and chemical methods on the surface of polymeric materials have unique properties. However, the applicability of polymeric materials with nanocoatings under specific temperature and mechanical conditions depends on the physical and mechanical properties of the coating. The determination of Young’s modulus is a task of paramount importance since it is widely used in calculations of the stress–strain state of structural elements and structures in general. Small thicknesses of nanocoatings limit the choice of methods for determining the modulus of elasticity. In this paper, we propose a method for determining the Young’s modulus for a carbonized layer formed on a polyurethane substrate. For its implementation, the results of uniaxial tensile tests were used. This approach made it possible to obtain patterns of change in the Young’s modulus of the carbonized layer depending on the intensity of ion-plasma treatment. These regularities were compared with regularities of changes in the molecular structure of the surface layer caused by plasma treatment of different intensity. The comparison was made on the basis of correlation analysis. Changes in the molecular structure of the coating were determined from the results of infrared Fourier spectroscopy (FTIR) and spectral ellipsometry.

In this study, a novel boric acid-incorporated polyurethane (BPU) foam was synthesized and its several physical and biological properties were investigated. In order to determine the effect of the incorporated boric acid (BA) particles into the foam, mechanical and physical properties (apparent density, contact angle), analytical (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry), morphological (scanning electron microscopy (SEM), micro-computed tomography), thermal characteristics (thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry) and antibacterial activity were examined. The addition of BA particles to the PU foam improved the thermal and mechanical properties, as BA strengthened the polymeric structure through hydrogen bonds with PU. Mechanical analyses and contact angle measurements revealed that the BPU foam demonstrated better mechanical properties (94.0 kPa) and higher hydrophobicity values (108.52°) with respect to PU foam (52.9 kPa and 37.35°, respectively). According to microscopy analyses, micro-CT images confirmed SEM images in which PU foam has an open cell structure, whereas BPU foam has a closed cell structure. The antibacterial activity test results demonstrate that incorporation of BA to the PU structure significantly improved the antibacterial properties of the PU foam against both of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. This study suggests that the addition of BA into PU structure enhanced the antibacterial activities of PU foam while improving its physical, mechanical and thermal properties. The healing efficiency in self-healing materials is bound by the ability to form blends between the prepolymer and curing agent. One of the problems in the development of self-healing polymers is the reduced affinity of the bismaleimide curing agent for the elastomeric furan-containing matrix. Even when stoichiometric amounts of both components are applied, incompatibility of components can significantly reduce the effectiveness of self-healing, and lead to undesirable side effects, such as crystallization of the curing agent, in the thickness and on the surface. This is exactly what we have seen in the development of linear and cross-linked PUs using BMI as a hardener. In this work, we present a new series of the di- and tetrafuranic isocyanate-related ureas—promising curing agents for the development of polyurethanes-like self-healing materials via the Diels–Alder reaction. The commonly used isocyanates (4,4′-Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, MDI; 2,4-Tolylene diisocyanate, TDI; and Hexamethylene diisocyanate, HDI) and furfurylamine, difurfurylamine, and furfuryl alcohol (derived from biorenewables) as furanic compounds were utilized for synthesis. The remendable polyurethane for testing was synthesized from a maleimide-terminated prepolymer and one of the T-series urea. Self-healing properties were investigated by thermal analysis. Molecular mass was determined by gel permeation chromatography. The properties of the new polymer were compared with polyurethane from a furan-terminated analog. Visual tests showed that the obtained material has thermally induced self-healing abilities. Resulting polyurethane (PU) has a rather low fusing point and thus may be used as potential material for Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing.

In this study, the effect of moisture on the elastic and failure properties of elastomeric polyurethane (EPU 40) 3D printed via Vat Photopolymerization was investigated. EPU 40 samples were printed, and uniaxial tensile tests were performed on Dry-fresh, Dry-aged (eight months aged), and after various times of being immersed in water (0–8 months). Elastic response, initial stiffness, failure strength, and failure elongation were analyzed. Besides, gravimetric analysis was performed to determine the increase in weight and thickness after water immersion. The elastic response was fitted by the Arruda-Boyce constitutive model. Results show that initial stiffness decreased after immersion (mean 6.8 MPa dry vs. 6.3 MPa immersed p-value 0.002). Contrary, the initial stiffness increased due to physical aging under a dry state from a mean 6.3 MPa to 6.9 MPa (p = 0.006). The same effect was observed for stiffness parameter G of the constitutive model, while the limit stretch parameter λL was not affected by either aging. The 95% confidence intervals for strength and failure stretch were 5.27–9.48 MPa and 2.18–2.86, respectively, and were not affected either by immersion time or by physical aging. The median diffusion coefficient was 3.8·10−12 m^2/s. The immersion time has a significant effect only on stiffness, while oxidative aging has an inverse effect on the mechanical properties compared to water immersion. The transition process is completed within 24 h after immersion.

One of the most important methods of controlling the properties of concrete and cement-based materials is to control the rate and kinetics of cement hydration. In the present study, novel flexible polyurethane-decorated MgO nanohybrids were synthesized using a simple chemical method, added to cement paste in different amounts, and utilized as an effective mechanical performance-enhancing factor for cement paste. It was observed that by adding 3 wt% synthesized PU-MgO nanohybrids to cement paste, its mechanical properties were improved and its compressive strength and flexural strength were increased by up to 13% and 15%, respectively, compared to the plain cement, after 45 days. The effect mechanism of adding PU–MgO nanoparticles on the properties of the cement paste was investigated. The addition of PU–MgO nanohybrids increased the pozzolanic reactions and formed more C-S-H phases.
