Nontrivial chiral spin textures with nanometric sizes and novel characteristics (e.g., magnetic skyrmions) are promising for encoding information bits in future energy‐efficient and high‐density spintronic devices. Because of antiferromagnetic exchange coupling, skyrmions in ferrimagnetic materials exhibit many advantages in terms of size and efficient manipulation, which allow them to overcome the limitations of ferromagnetic skyrmions. Despite recent progress, ferrimagnetic skyrmions have been observed only in few films in the presence of external fields, while those in ferrimagnetic bulks remain elusive. This study reports on spontaneously generated zero‐field ground‐state magnetic skyrmions and their subsequent transformation into traditional magnetic bubbles via intermediate states of (bi‐)target bubbles during a magnetic anisotropy change in the rare‐earth ferrimagnetic crystal DyFe11Ti. Spontaneous reversible topological transformation driven by a temperature‐induced spin reorientation transition is directly distinguished using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. The spontaneous generation of magnetic skyrmions and successive topological transformations in ferrimagnetic DyFe11Ti are expected to advance the design of topological spin textures with versatile properties and potential applications in rare‐earth magnets. A Z1-type Fe 3 Pd alloy with negative enthalpy of formation at ambient pressure has been discovered recently, however, its physical properties under high pressures remain unclear. In this work, the effect of pressure on the magnetic, electronic, lattice dynamic, mechanical and thermal properties of the Z1-Fe 3 Pd are investigated thoroughly by the first-principles methods. Under high pressures, the Z1-Fe 3 Pd are energetically favorable compared to other types Fe 3 Pd structures. A pressure-induced magnetic phase transition from ferromagnetic (FM) to ferrimagnetic (FIM) state are found, and the FM and FIM states are dynamically and mechanically stable under high pressures. The electronic density of states for both the FM and FIM states are analyzed to understand their magnetism. These two magnetic configurations are ductile, but their elastic properties and anisotropy are quite different. Additionally, the FM and FIM states have high uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy, the FM state is a semi-hard magnet, and the FIM state undergoes a transition from hard magnet to semi-hard magnet with pressure. Z-type hexagonal ferrites have recently received attention for their room-temperature magnetoelectric (ME), which is activated when the temperature at which the transverse-conical spin-state transitions to a ferrimagnetic state is increased. The changes in the magnetic domain structure at the transition have been well-documented; however, they are still not understood in detail. In the present study, Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis combined with an in situ heating experiment was conducted to demonstrate the shift in magnetic domain structure during the transition from the transverse-conical spin arrangement to a ferrimagnetic spin order. The dynamics of the magnetic domain structure changes with the increasing temperature were acquired in real-time. At 490 K, the magnetization transition from the transverse-conical spin state to the ferromagnetic state was demonstrated. Cross-tie domain walls formed during the magnetic transition process. The increased effect of the demagnetizing field applied to the 180° magnetic domains was caused by a lower magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) at the easy axis of magnetization. The electromagnetic (EM) properties of shielded gyromagnetic spheres are characterized with the aid of an electrodynamic model formulated for the transverse electric (TE) modes of an isotropic sphere, in a similar way as dielectric resonators are commonly analyzed. Broadband characteristics of geometric and energy filling factors are presented. A new measure of the magnetic loss tangent is introduced which is positive despite the intrinsic permeability of the gyromagnetic medium being negative, where existing definitions yield a non-physical negative value. The sample size dependence of those quantities is also assessed. The conclusions from the analysis are applied to investigate and de-embed ferromagnetic linewidth errors which can occur in broadband measurements of magnetic garnet spheres. Magnetic anisotropy fields and the gyromagnetic $g$ -factor are also estimated from the measurement data. Experiments were performed in a two-port subwavelength cavity, covering a frequency range of up to 28 GHz. Additionally, two-port rectangular resonant cavity linewidth measurements at a few modes have been conducted. Good agreement between the two methods is found if the systematic error is accounted for. We report a study on the interfacial antiferromagnetic coupling between ferrimagnetic TbIG/YIG thin films. TbIG/YIG bilayers are grown on YAG (110) substrates. The crystal structure and magnetic properties of the films are characterized. The temperature and directional dependences of the antiferromagnetic coupling effect are observed at low temperatures. This work enriches the magnetic research of ferrimagnetic oxide films with complex structures, providing new ideas for the design of antiferromagnetically coupled spintronics devices. Implementation of skyrmion based energy efficient and high-density data storage devices requires aggressive scaling of skyrmion size. Ferrimagnetic materials are considered to be a suitable platform for this purpose due to their low saturation magnetization (i.e. smaller stray field). However, this method of lowering the saturation magnetization and scaling the lateral size of skyrmions is only applicable where the skyrmions have a smaller lateral dimension compared to the hosting film. Here, we show by performing rigorous micromagnetic simulation that the size of skyrmions, which have lateral dimension comparable to their hosting nanodot can be scaled by increasing saturation magnetization. Also, when the lateral dimension of nanodot is reduced and thereby the skyrmion confined in it is downscaled, there remains a challenge in forming a stable skyrmion with experimentally observed Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI) values since this interaction has to facilitate higher canting per spin to complete a 360° rotation along the diameter. In our study, we found that skyrmions can be formed in 20 nm lateral dimension nanodots with high saturation magnetization (1.30–1.70 MA/m) and DMI values (~ 3 mJ/m2) that have been reported to date. This result could stimulate experiments on implementation of highly dense skyrmion devices. Additionally, using this, we show that voltage controlled magnetic anisotropy based switching mediated by an intermediate skyrmion state can be achieved in the soft layer of a ferromagnetic p-MTJ of lateral dimensions 20 nm with sub 1 fJ/bit energy in the presence of room temperature thermal noise with reasonable DMI ~ 3 mJ/m2. Ferrimagnetic alloy thin films that exhibit perpendicular (out-of-plane) magnetic anisotropy (PMA) with low saturation magnetization, such as GdCo and Mn4N, were predicted to be favorable for hosting small Néel skyrmions for room temperature applications. Due to the exponential decay of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction and the limited range of spin–orbit torques, which can be used to drive skyrmion motion, the thickness of the ferrimagnetic layer has to be small, preferably under 20 nm. While there are examples of sub-20 nm, rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM), ferrimagnetic thin films fabricated by sputter deposition, to date, rare-earth-free sub-20 nm Mn4N films with PMA have only been reported to be achieved by molecular beam epitaxy, which is not suitable for massive production. Here, we report the epitaxial growth of sub-20 nm Mn4N films with PMA at 400 °C–450 °C substrate temperatures on MgO substrates by reactive sputtering. The Mn4N films were achieved by reducing the surface roughness of MgO substrate through a high-temperature vacuum annealing process. The optimal films showed low saturation magnetization (Ms = 43 emu/cc), low magnetic anisotropy energy (0.7 Merg/cc), and a remanent magnetization to saturation magnetization ratio (Mr/Ms) near 1 at room temperature. Preliminary ab initio density functional theory calculations have confirmed the ferrimagnetic ground state of Mn4N grown on MgO. The magnetic properties, along with the high thermal stability of Mn4N thin films in comparison with RE-TM thin films, provide the platform for future studies of practical skyrmion-based spintronic materials. Crystal structure, magnetostriction, magnetic and magnetothermal properties have been studied for novel non-stoichiometric ErFe 2 Mn x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.6) compounds. It has been found that for х ≤ 0.4 the compounds crystallize with MgCu 2 -type structure. Curie temperature and magnetic moment values decrease with manganese alloying. Molecular field coefficients have been calculated within ferrimagnetic two-sublattice molecular field model. Magnetic and heat capacity measurements have been used to calculate magnetocaloric effect in a wide temperature range. It has been demonstrated that increasing the Mn content in ErFe 2 Mn x leads to a significant increase (up to 39 %) of anisotropic magnetostriction value at 77 K in magnetic field of 18 kOe. At the same time, the value of effective magnetocrystalline anisotropy decreases. Thus, manganese alloying opens new way for tuning magnetocrystalline anisotropy and magnetostriction in Laves phase compounds. The band alignment, intrinsic ferromagnetism, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, magnetic anisotropy and critical temperature (T C) of a GdI 2 /GeC van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure were systematically investigated by first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. The proposed GdI 2 /GeC vdW heterostructure is a bipolar magnetic semiconductor with Type-I band alignment, large in-plane magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of − 0.912 mJ/m2 and high critical temperature of 466 K. In addition, under biaxial strains, the heterostructure transformed from semiconductor into metal, while the easy magnetization axis maintained in-plane and T C increased. The results indicated that the GdI 2 /GeC vdW heterostructure presented large MAE and high T C , having potential applications in spintronic devices. Co(Fe 1 -x Cr x) 2 O 4 (x = 0.02, 0.10, 0.15, 0.30, 0.50) samples are synthesized by the sol-gel method. The XRD patterns and subsequent Rietveld refinement provided structural analysis and confirmation of the samples' single-phase formation. XPS measurement reveals the existence of the elements Co, Cr and Fe in 2+ and 3+ oxidation states. The saturation magnetization (M s), coercivity (H c) and magnetocrystalline anisotropy (K 1) are observed to decline to as low as 10 emu/g, 35 Oe and 0.50 (106 erg/cm3) following Cr substitution, which indicated that the samples transform to a soft magnetic material. Cr substitution also lowers the ferrimagnetic (FiM) to paramagnetic (PM) transition temperature, T c , from 752 K for x = 0.02 to 307 K for x = 0.50. With Cr replacement, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss values decrease, indicating it to be a potential contender for high frequency applications. The dielectric constant for x = 0.30 and x = 0.50 samples rises sharply around 1 MHz owing to the LC resonance effect between the samples and the measurement leads. Fault kinematics can provide information on the relationship and assembly of tectonic units in an orogen. Magnetic fabric studies of faults where pseudotachylytes form have recently been used to determine direction and sense of seismic slip in prehistoric earthquakes. Here we apply this methodology to study magnetic fabrics of pseudotachylytes in field structures of the Köli Nappe Complex (central Swedish Caledonides), with the aim to determine fault kinematics and decipher the role of seismic faulting in the assembly of the Caledonian nappe pile. Because the pseudotachylyte veins are thin, we focused on small (ca. 0.2 to 0.03 cm 3) samples for measuring the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility. The small sample size challenges conventional use of magnetic anisotropy and results acquired from such small specimens demand cautious interpretation. Importantly, we find that magnetic fabric results show inverse proportionality among specimen size, degree of magnetic anisotropy and mean magnetic susceptibility, which is most likely an analytical artifact related to instrument sensitivity and small sample dimensions. In general, however, it is shown that the principal axes of magnetic susceptibility correspond to the orientation of foliation and lineation, where the maximum susceptibility (k1) is parallel to the mineral lineation, and the minimum susceptibility (k3) is dominantly oriented normal to schistosity. Furthermore, the studied pseudotachylytes develop distinct magnetic properties. Pristine pseudotachylytes preserve a signal of ferrimagnetic magnetite that likely formed during faulting. In contrast, portions of the pseudotachylytes have altered, with a tendency of magnetite to break down to form chlorite. Despite magnetite breakdown, the altered pseudotachylyte mean magnetic susceptibility is nearly twice that of altered pseudotachylyte, likely originating from the Fe-rich chlorite, as implied by temperature-dependent susceptibility measurements and thin-section observations. Analysis of structural and magnetic fabric data indicates that seismic faulting occurred during exhumation into the upper crust, but these data yield no kinematic information on the direction and sense of seismic slip. Additionally, the combined structural field and magnetic fabric data suggest that seismic faulting was postdated by brittle E–W extensional deformation along steep normal faults. Although the objective of finding kinematic indicators for the faulting was not fully achieved, we believe that the results from this study may help guide future studies of magnetic anisotropy with small specimens (<1 cm 3), as well as in the interpretation of magnetic properties of pseudotachylytes. Terbium (Tb) and Thulium (Tm) co-doped strontium hexaferrites (SHFs), with composition SrFe 12-2x Tb x Tm x O 19 (0.00 ≤ x ≤ 0.04), were prepared via sol-gel auto-combustion method. The effect of Tb3+ and Tm3+ (as co-dopants) on SHFs were investigated in detail. XRD pattern of the prepared SHFs revealed the formation of M-type SHFs. A secondary phase of Fe 2 O 3 starts to appear for x ≥ 0.02. The optical band gaps (E g) of the prepared SHFs were widened with the increase in doping levels. Mössbauer study showed that the Tm3+ and Tb3+ ions have the preference to occupy 12k and 2a octahedral sites. M(H) measurements were recorded at room temperature (RT; T = 300 K) and low temperature (T = 10 K). The hysteresis loops of various SHFs revealed their ferrimagnetic (FM) nature at both RT and 10 K. Magnetic parameters including saturation magnetization (M s), remanence (M r), coercivity (H c), squareness ratio (SQR = M r /M s) and magnetic moment ( n B ) were determined. Compared to the pristine (undoped) sample, lower content of Tm3+ and Tb3+ co-substitution (x = 0.01) improves significantly the magnetic properties of SHFs. With further increasing co-substitution contents (x > 0.01), an impurity phase appears and as a result the magnetization reduces. The observed SQR values of the proposed SHFs above 0.5 clearly indicated their single domain character with uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The effects of Fe substitution on the structural and magnetic properties of the HoCo 12- x Fe x B 6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) series of intermetallic compounds have been studied. All of the compounds form in the rhombohedral SrNi 12 B 6 -type structure, the lattice constants increasing linearly with x. These compounds are ferrimagnets with a small transition metal magnetic moment and exhibit a spin reorientation transition. The Curie temperature decreases from 147 K for x = 0–105 K for x = 2. The Fe for Co substitution leads also to a progressive decrease of the spontaneous magnetization. In the early days of paleomagnetism, David Strangway was interested in understanding why igneous rocks are faithful recorders of the Earth's magnetic field. He recognized that ferromagnetic (s.l.) grains that could be discerned by optical microscopy were too large to carry a stable remanent magnetization, and speculated whether fine-grained, ferromagnetic (s.l.) inclusions or exsolutions in silicate minerals are responsible. When these inclusions or exsolutions are randomly oriented, or the silicate hosts are randomly oriented in a rock, they can be a good recorder of the field. If these minerals, however, show an alignment within the silicate host, and the host is preferentially aligned due to flow structures or deformation, then the paleomagnetic direction and paleointensity could be biased. We examine the magnetic anisotropy arising from the ferromagnetic (s.l.) phases in silicate-host minerals. Single crystals of phyllosilicate, clinopyroxene, and calcite show most consistent ferrimagnetic fabric with relation to the minerals' crystallographic axes, whereas olivine and feldspar display only a weak relationship. No discernable relationship is found between the ferrimagnetic anisotropy and crystallographic axes for amphibole minerals. Our results have implications when single crystals are being used for either studies of field direction or paleointensity or in cases where silicate minerals have a preferential orientation. The Monte Carlo simulation has been used to investigate the magnetic properties of a mixed spin-1 (sublattice A) and spin-1/2 (sublattice B), where each sublattice has a rectangular structure and the whole lattice system forms a 2-D centered rectangular lattice. Five possible interactions are considered. Namely, two S–S interactions and two $\sigma $ – $\sigma $ interactions depend on crystal direction, and an antiferromagnetic interaction between the two sublattices is taken. Our results show that the critical temperature increases with increasing the variation of any exchange interactions. The existence of the compensation temperature depends on the balance between the S–S interactions along and $\sigma $ – $\sigma $ interactions along [01] directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Di-phase ferroelectric-ferrite composites with the same composition close to the percolation limit (0.66BaTiO 3 -0.33CoFe 2 O 4) and with different phase arrangements (randomly mixed phases and tri-layer structures) have been consolidated by using spark plasma sintering and their properties were comparatively analyzed. The intrinsic effective dielectric constant has been estimated by using finite element method and a value almost ten times higher was predicted for the randomly mixed composite, as result of different field distributions inside the ferrite and ferroelectric phases. At room temperature, experimental permittivity contains an intrinsic behavior overlapped onto a very strong extrinsic component determined by the interfaces and by local charge inhomogeneity. The extrinsic dielectric behavior has been discussed in terms of thermally activated relaxation mechanisms developed in both types of investigated structures, as revealed by the temperature-dependence impedance spectroscopy. The magnetic properties are derived as "sum property" from the ferrimagnetic character of CoFe 2 O 4 and show the lowest magnetization for the randomly mixed composites and a weak magnetic anisotropy when the magnetic field was applied in-plane or out-of-plane in the layered structure. Due to the different levels of interface doping specific to the different types of interfaces, the magnetic Curie temperature of the two composites ranges from 720 K in the randomly mixed structure to 746 K for the layered one. The ferroelectric P (E) loops and a modest ME coefficient of 14 mVOe−1cm−1 at 100 Hz were determined only for the layered structure, due to the high leakage and to the small grain size (below 200 nm) in the ferroelectric BaTiO 3 component. • Randomly mixed and tri-layered structure composites were comparatively investigated. • Role of the phase arrangement on the dielectric properties was predicted by FEM. • Experimental dielectric data contains a strong influence from extrinsic phenomena. • Magnetic properties slightly depend on the phase arrangement. We have separately assessed the contributions of isolated Fe3+ ions and the ferrimagnetic subsystem to the total magnetization of an aligned magnetite (Fe3O4) nanowire array grown in pores of an anodized alumina membrane and evaluated the magnetic anisotropy field of the nanowires, which has been found to be an order of magnitude weaker than the expected shape anisotropy field. The reduction in magnetic anisotropy in the nanowires can be accounted for by dipole–dipole interaction between individual nanowires in the array. In electron spin resonance spectra of the nanowires, we have identified a phase-inverted line, corresponding to their microwave magnetoresistance. The Verwey transition in the magnetite nanowires has been shown to be suppressed due to deviations from stoichiometry and size effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The nanocrystalline Cd 0.5-X Ni X Co 0.5 Fe 2 O 4 (x = 0.0 to 0.5) ferrites were synthesized by auto combustion technique using hexamine as fuel. The substitution of non magnetic Cd2+ ions in the tetrahedral site causes canting on the octahedral site. The saturation magnetization increases with Ni substitution up to X = 0.3 and then decreases with further increase in Ni substitution at room temperature. This behaviour is consistent with Yafet–Kittel magnetic ordering. A three sub-lattices model (A, B 1 and B 2) has been used to describe the magnetic behaviour of the ferrites. Low temperature unsaturated magnetization behaviour indicates the core shell structure of the nanoparticles i:e ordered core spins and randomly oriented surface spins. Reduced remanent magnetization values (Mr/Ms) suggest that the samples have uniaxial anisotropy at room temperature. The variation of magnetizations of the samples with temperature was studied by ZFC–FC technique at three different applied fields of 250 Oe, 500 Oe and 1000 Oe. The nature of the curves showed a change with increase in Ni concentration. The blocking temperature and anisotropy increased with Ni concentration. The average crystallite size was found to be in the range of 6–13 nm. The lattice constant decreased with Ni concentration. The Dielectric property has been explained on the basis of Maxwell-Wagner's two layer model while A.C. susceptibility studies indicate single domain-superparamagnetic domain structure. The Curie temperature shifts to higher temperature with increase in Ni concentration. Magnetic properties in ferrimagnetic GdCo alloy films with bulk perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are investigated as a function of annealing temperature (Tanneal) and annealing time for several capping layers. Magnetic properties in films capped by TaOx vary markedly with Tanneal; the saturation magnetization and coercivity vary progressively with increasing Tanneal up to 300°C, and above that temperature, PMA is lost abruptly. By comparing the annealing temperature dependence for Co-dominated and Gd-dominated compositions close to the magnetization compensation point, the data are readily explained by preferential oxidation of Gd during annealing. When films are capped by a Ta/Pt bilayer, the film properties are stable up Tanneal = 300 °C, indicating that oxidation at high temperatures is effectively blocked, but the abrupt loss of PMA for Tanneal > 300 °C is still observed. X-ray diffraction measurement reveals that the amorphous structure of the films remains the same after high-temperature annealing that is sufficient to remove PMA, indicating that crystallization from the amorphous phase is not responsible for the lack of PMA. Instead, our results suggest that high annealing temperatures may cause segregation of Co and Gd atoms in the films, which reduces anisotropic pair-pair correlations responsible for the observed bulk PMA in the as-grown state. In 3 d − 4 f intermetallic compounds, a Co substitution for Fe usually strengthens the exchange interactions due to a shift of the Fermi energy to a region of the 3 d band with higher density of states. Here, we study the influence of Co on the magnetism of ferrimagnetic DyFe 5 Al 7 using magnetization measurements in static (up to 14 T) and pulsed (up to 58 T) magnetic fields. We find that the homogeneity range of DyFe 5− x Co x Al 7 is limited to x ≤ 2.5 . The Co substitution for Fe produces a strong detrimental effect on the 3 d − 3 d intrasublattice exchange interactions, which leads to a pronounced decrease of the Curie temperature and of the 3 d − 4 f intersublattice exchange field. A reduction of the density of states at the Fermi level might occur due to a broadening of the 3 d band. A decrease of the rare-earth contribution to the magnetic anisotropy energy is also observed with increasing Co content. The magnetic structure of La 1- x Tb x Mn 2 Si 2 compounds with 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 has been studied by powder neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements on single-crystal samples. We demonstrate that at 4.2 K, with increasing the Tb concentration, a canted ferromagnetic structure of LaMn 2 Si 2 changes at x > 0.2 to a canted antiferromagnetic structure. The antiferromagnetic in-plane component of Mn moment decreases with increasing concentration x and vanishes at x > 0.5. TbMn 2 Si 2 is characterized by a collinear in-plane Mn ordering and ferrimagnetic structure, in which the Mn sublattice possesses the ferromagnetic interlayer alignment along the easy c -axis. Neutron diffraction study does not reveal a long-range magnetic order of Tb moments for the compounds with x ≤ 0.4. Our results show that for concentrations 0.2 < x ≤ 0.4, a competition of the interlayer Tb-Mn, Mn-Mn exchange interactions and strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy leads to formation of a frustrated magnetic state of Tb ions, which prevents magnetic ordering in the Tb sublattice. A step-by-step engineering approach offering a model for the characterization of magnetic composite materials is presented. The modelling of composite materials containing unbiased ferrites is a subject of great interest, due to extended range of applications, such as hyperthermia and microwave absorbers. Here, unbiased ferrites simplify the application structure, as they do not require a biasing field, while they can resonate at low microwave frequencies due to their innate magnetocrystalline anisotropy field. However, so far there has not been an explicit organized step-by-step engineering modelling approach. The homogenization approximation formula is used in conjunction with Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation solution to systematically compute the complex effective permeability and compare it with published measurements, from an engineer's result-focused perspective. For further validation, simulations of these composite materials as periodic structures are carried out, which additionally provide useful insight on the electromagnetic field distributions within the composites and are often more accurate. The results of the proposed procedure show good agreement with the experimental ones, which validate it, while the relatively greater error appears for the imaginary parts. The Dukla Nappe belongs to the Outer Western Carpathians, which suffered considerable shortening due to the convergence and collision of the European and African plates. In this paper we present new paleomagnetic and magnetic anisotropy results from the Polish part of the Dukla Nappe, based on 102 individually oriented cores from nine geographically distributed localities. Susceptibility measurements and mineralogy investigations showed that paramagnetic minerals are important contributors to susceptibility anisotropy (AMS). The AMS fabrics are related to deposition/compression (foliation) and weak tectonic deformation (lineation). The AARM fabric, that of the ferrimagnetic minerals, seems to be a less sensitive indicator of tectonic deformation than the AMS fabric. The inclination-only test points to the pre-folding age of the remanent magnetizations. Seven localities exhibit CCW rotation, a single one shows CW rotation. The CCW rotated paleomagnetic directions form two groups, one showing large, the other moderate CCW rotation. Previously published paleomagentic directions from the Slovak part of the same nappe exhibit smeared distribution between them. The declination of the overall-mean paleomagnetic direction for the Dukla nappe is similar to those observed in the neighbouring Magura and Silesian nappes, but it is of poorer quality. The AMS lineations at several localities are deviating more to the west from the present north than that of the local tectonic strikes. A possible explanation for this is that the AMS lineations were imprinted first, probably still in the Oligocene, while the sediments were soft (ductile deformation) and the folding and tilting took place during the CCW rotation. A combined technique of mechanical alloying and heat treatment has been used to prepare the polycrystalline samples of Fe 2−x Ga x O 3 (x = 0.6–1.2) system in orthorhombic phase. It has been possible to reduce the sintering temperature by ~350 °C for stabilizing the orthorhombic phase in comparison to the temperature reported in literature. The Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction patterns indicated the distribution of Ga and Fe atoms in the Ga1, Ga2, Fe1 and Fe2 sites of the lattice structure. A linear variation of the lattice parameters with Ga/Fe content showed application of Vegard's law. The temperature-dependent magnetization measurements confirmed ferrimagnetic order of Fe spin moments. The ferrimagnetic transition temperature (T C) has decreased from 320 K to 100 K with the increase of Ga content in the range of x = 0.6–1.2. Temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy data ruled out any structural phase transition at T C , but an anomalous behaviour of the position and width of the peaks of Raman active phonon modes near to T C confirmed a strong spin–phonon coupling in the material. The spin–phonon coupling strength (η) for the A9 mode has been found around 1.64 cm−1 for x = 1 and 3.34 cm−1 for x = 0.8, and η for the A21 mode has been found around 2.12 cm−1 for x = 1 and 3.28 cm−1 for x = 0.8. The spin-phonon coupling strength has been diluted in the samples with higher content of Ga. The experimental results indicated that the variation of Ga/Fe content and its distribution in lattice sites determine the ferrimagnetic properties, magnetic anisotropy and spin-phonon coupling in Fe 2−x Ga x O 3 system. The results are expected to be useful for understanding the spin-phonon coupling in multiferroic-magnetoelectric materials with magnetic and electric transitions near to room temperature. Abstract: Large sized α-Li3Fe2(PO4)3 single crystals with high quality are successfully grown by a flux method. Magnetic behaviors of the grown crystals are investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements along different directions. The results confirm that α-Li3Fe2(PO4)3 exhibits weak ferrimagnetic behaviors at low temperature, which are in good agreement with those reported previously. However magnetic anisotropy is confirmed for the first time, suggesting that the c-axis is the likely magnetic easy axis and the a-axis is the magnetic hard one. Two anomalies are clearly observed in magnetic susceptibility along the a-axis and heat capacity data at zero field, suggesting the appearance of two successive magnetic transitions at ~26 and ~22K in the system. Millimeter wave (MMW) absorption measurements have been conducted on commercial samples of large (micrometer-sized) and small (nanometer-sized) particles of BaFe12O19 and SrFe12O19 using a quasi-optical MMW spectrometer and a series of backwards wave oscillators encompassing the 30–120 GHz range. Effective anisotropy of the particles calculated from the resonant absorption frequency indicates lower overall anisotropy in the nano-particles. Due to their high magnetocrystalline anisotropy, both BaFe12O19 and SrFe12O19 are expected to have spin resonances in the 45–55 GHz range. Several of the sampled BaFe12O19 powders did not have MMW absorptions, so they were further investigated by DC magnetization and x-ray diffraction to assess magnetic behavior and structure. The samples with absent MMW absorption contained primarily iron oxides, suggesting that MMW absorption could be used for quality control in hexaferrite powder manufacture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the influence of the layer thickness and the surface intralayer exchange coupling on the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the mixed spin-2 and spin-5/2 ferrimagnetic systems are studied in detail by the Monte Carlo simulation. A number of interesting phenomena have been found. The results show that there exist the significant dependences of the compensation temperature, phase transition temperature, and the hysteresis loop of the system on both layer thickness and surface intralayer exchange coupling. The magnetization processes can be effectively studied using magnetization-induced second-harmonic generation effect (MSHG). The aim of the current work is the investigation of inhomogeneous magnetization distributions induced in the surface area of the garnet film by ion implantation. The studies were performed on magnetic garnet film of (111) symmetry, implanted with H+ 2 ions of 1.5 × 1016 cm-2 dose and 60 keV energy. The measurements of MSHG effect were performed as a function of the sample rotation angle and the amplitude of external magnetic field. The observed MSHG intensity hystereses were subjected to a decomposition procedure into contributions having different magnetic field dependences. Tunability of structural and magnetic properties of Mn 3- x Co x Ga films is presented by Co substitution, where critical behavior emerges 0.37 ≤ x ≤ 0.56 exhibiting a transition from tetragonal hard ferrimagnetic with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) to a cubic soft ferrimagnetic phase with in-plane magnetic anisotropy (IMA). In the critical regime, coexisting state of tetragonal and cubic phases possesses significantly low coercive field (H C = 1.9 kOe) with relatively low saturation magnetization (M S = 100~150 emu/cc) while maintaining the PMA. From first-principles calculations, moments of two Mn sites do not change upon Co substitution. However, moments of substituted Co almost vanish in tetragonal while giving around 1 μ B in cubic phase, which agrees with overall M S behaviors of the experimental results. These findings not only uncover the hidden magnetic state in Mn 3- x Co x Ga by altering the parallel and antiparallel coupling between Mn and Co, but also provide an additional degree of freedom for spintronic applications using Mn-based Heusler compounds. • Critical regime during the transition from hard ferrimagnetic tetragonal to soft ferrimagnetic cubic in Co-substituted Mn3Ga. • Dramatic reduction of the coercive field on remaining perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the critical regime. • Compensation point near this critical regime due to a large reduction of the Co moments when substituted in Mn 3 Ga. NiCr 2 O 4 nanoparticles have been successfully prepared by chemical co-precipitation method. Desired crystallographic phase of NiCr 2 O 4 is confirmed by analyzing x-ray diffractrograms. With increasing annealing temperature, crystal transition from cubic to tetragonal phase is observed. The increasing average particle size from ∼80 to ∼280 nm is studied by SEM and TEM micrographs as annealing temperature increases. Exchange bias behavior is detected at 10 K accompanied by the shift of magnetic hysteresis loops along field axis. This effect is gradually weakening as annealing temperature increases. The magnetization depending on temperature under zero-field-cooled and field-cooled conditions suggests the ferrimagnetic transition at ∼72 K and the spiral magnetic order at ∼25 K. Furthermore, the ferrimagnetic transition point shifts slightly to low temperature with increasing annealing temperature. This paper described to the ceramics (inorganic) two-component composites with controllable magnetic and electrical properties. Ceramic composite samples were produced via solid state reaction method (standard ceramic technique) from initial magnetic (BaFe 11.9 Al 0.1 O 19 or BF) and ferroelectric (BaTiO 3 or BT) phases. BT and BF initial compounds were mixed in stoichiometric ratios (BF) 1-x - (BT) x (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) and sintered. Initial compounds BaFe 11.9 Al 0.1 O 19 (x = 0) and BaTiO 3 (x = 1) were also produced via standard ceramic technique. The constituent materials were chosen considering their perspective ferrimagnetic and ferroelectric properties, respectively for BF and BT. Moreover, Ba-hexaferrites are reported to exhibit ferroelectricity at room temperature as well, and the combination of two ferroelectric phases is of interest. Systematic investigations of the structural, magnetic and electrical properties versus chemical composition (x) were performed. As structural properties we have defined the features of crystal structure (a and c lattice parameters, volume of unit cell) and peculiarities of microstructure (density, porosity, average grain size). The ferrimagnetic phase transition temperature is almost independent of the content of BT, which is determined by the exchange interactions Fe3+-O2--Fe3+in the magnetic phase. However, the coercivity of composite samples is lower which is due to the contribution of the microstructure dependent shape-anisotropy to the total magnetic anisotropy energy. The permittivity vs. temperature behavior confirmed the existence of two ferroelectric phase transitions corresponding to structural phase transitions in BT (at about 400 K) and BF (at about 700 K). It was observed that the electrical properties of composite samples, including the temperatures of the phase transitions, critically depended on concentration x which affects the composite microstructure. The effects of deposition order on the magnetic properties of the NiFe/NiMn exchange couple were studied. The use of a thin underlayer, to enhance these properties, was also investigated for the deposition order NiMn/NiFe. We found that the use of such an underlayer was essential for the exchange field to be greater than the coercivity. We observed that the underlayer film thickness did not have a dramatic effect on the final exchange field obtained. X-ray diffraction studies did not reveal a strong correlation between film texture and exchange fields. The blocking temperature was also measured for the deposition order NiFe/NiMn. To extend density limits in magnetic recording industry, two separate strategies were developed to build the storage bit in last decade, introduction of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and adoption of ferrimagnetism/antiferromagnetism. Meanwhile, these properties significantly improve device performance, such as reducing spin-transfer torque energy consumption and decreasing signal-amplitude-loss. However, materials combining PMA and antiferromagnetism rather than transition-metal/rare-earth system were rarely developed. Here, we develop a new type of ferrimagnetic superlattice exhibiting PMA based on abundant Heusler alloy families. The superlattice is formed by [MnGa/Co2FeAl] unit with their magnetizations antiparallel aligned. The effective anisotropy (Kueff) over 6 Merg/cm3 is obtained, and the SL can be easily built on various substrates with flexible lattice constants. The coercive force, saturation magnetization and Kueff of SLs are highly controllable by varying the thickness of MnGa and Co2FeAl layers.
