This paper presents a new linear eddy current speed sensor with rectangular-shaped coils. The excitation coil and the pick-up coil have a perpendicular configuration without a magnetic yoke. The proposed sensor is shorter than the previous designs. The sensor works for a conductive moving target; in this paper we present calculations and an experimental verification for solid iron and aluminum moving part materials. A novel 3D analytical method is presented for the description and for the design of an eddy current speed sensor that is fast and has high precision. The source fields and the reaction fields caused by induced eddy currents are separated in our 3D analytical method, which facilitates an enhanced investigation of the features of the speed sensor. Evaluations of the effects of the moving part material and of coil lift off on the performance of the speed sensor are made with the use of a 3D analytical method. Measurements are performed for an eddy current speed sensor at different speeds up to 11.65 m/s and at different frequencies with a novel analytical model in terms of the induced voltage in the pickup coil versus speed. Simplicity and high precision are the main advantages of the proposed speed sensor. The achieved linearity error is 0.47% (measured) up to 11.6 m/s, and 0.43% (calculated) up to 117 m/s (420 km/h).

A sputtered tape that uses a CoPt-based granular recording layer was developed for practical application in the next generation of large-capacity magnetic tapes. 1) First, disk media were prepared by depositing films onto glass substrates using an inline disk sputter machine in which the substrates were stationary facing the target, and the ability to control the crystalline orientation, the magnetic isolation, and the magnetic anisotropy of the recording layer, which are the important functions of the underlayer, was investigated. As a result, it was found that the medium with Co60Cr40 (45 nm)/Co60Cr40-15 vol.% TiO2 (5 nm) as the underlayer has the same properties as the medium with the Ru underlayer. 2) Next, a sputtered magnetic tape with Co60Cr40 (25 nm)/Co60Cr40-SiO2 (25 nm) as the underlayer deposited on a polymer film was prepared using a roll-to-roll sputtering machine. The ability to control the crystalline orientation and magnetic isolation of the magnetic recording layer was evaluated, and from the results it was found that a magnetic film with a granular structure was formed on the sputtered magnetic tape in which the $c$ -axis of the magnetic crystal grains is oriented in the direction perpendicular to the film and the magnetic crystal grains are separated by the SiO2 amorphous phase. 3) Furthermore, when the recording properties of the sputtered magnetic tape with a Co60Cr40 (25 nm)/Co60Cr40-SiO2 (25 nm) underlayer were compared with those of a magnetic tape for a linear tape-open (LTO) format eighth-generation tape cartridge (LTO 8), it was confirmed that the broadband signal-to-noise ratio of the sputtered tape with a Co60Cr40/Co60Cr40-SiO2 underlayer is 4.2 dB higher than that of the LTO 8 tape at a linear density of 300 kfci.

The 7-hole probe measurement system is mainly used to measure three-dimensional flow fields. During the measurement, the probe head was in direct contact with the measured object, and the head structure had a significant influence on the accuracy of the flow field measurement. The main influencing factors were the hole opening mode, hole position, and hole diameter. For a hemispherical 7-hole probe with perpendicular and forward-facing holes, orthogonal experiments with three levels and three factors (inflow velocity, hole position, and hole diameter) were designed, and additional experiments were conducted on the significant factors. The importance of factors was evaluated based on the correlation between different structural parameters and the pressure coefficient. The experiment was simulated using FLUENT, and the numerical simulation results demonstrated that the square of deviance at the inlet velocity, hole diameter, and hole position was 0.0018, 0.0013, and 0.3611, respectively. The position of the hole has a significant influence on the measurement results, but the influence of the inflow velocity and hole diameter is negligible, and the pressure coefficient is the smallest when the hole is at 45°. For the hemispherical 7-hole probe with forward facing hole, the hole is the best at approximately 45°, and considering the convenience of processing, the diameter of the hole can be selected as the diameter of the 1/10 probe.

ZSM-5 plates with a perpendicular intergrowth structure was synthesized by using a simple amine as the structure directing agent under hydrothermal conditions, in which the mother plate and the perpendicularly standing plates oriented along the (010) and (100) planes of MFI crystals, respectively. During the crystallization process, the mother plate was initially formed on the surface of the amorphous solid gel, while a set of parallel plates perpendicularly grew on its surface, via a homogeneous nucleation mechanism. The mother plate and the perpendicular plates had a similar thickness of 100–200 nm and were characterized by considerably shortened straight and zigzag 10 member ring pores, respectively. This unique intergrowth structure greatly facilitated the diffusion of the reactive molecules in HZSM-5 crystals during methanol conversion to hydrocarbons.

Self-assembled block copolymer (BCP) thin films necessarily require a distinct chemical contrast between the blocks (or microdomain homogeneity) for the purpose of high-resolution pattern transfer applications. Despite its importance, however, there has been difficulty in measuring the chemical distribution associated with the self-assembling processes, i.e. solvent vapor annealing (SVA) or thermal annealing (TA). Herein, we present a simple yet effective method to probe the chemical distribution over polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) films that underwent the SVA or SVA + TA processes. An IR nanospectroscopy using scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM), in concert with X-ray scattering analyses, provides the relative chemical concentration of the perpendicular lamellar patterns. The chemical mapping for the components based on the s-SNOM reveals that the SVA process leaves a considerable portion of the intermixed zones of PS and PMMA blocks, whereas the subsequent TA process facilitates the chain segregation towards high-contrast chemical distribution. Interestingly, such a microdomain homogeneity critically affects the quality of the unidirectional Al2O3 lines that were substituted from topographically guided lamellae. Our results substantiate an important insight into understanding the chain redistribution behavior in the self-assembled BCP films using non-destructive s-SNOM technique.

We explore the impact of Fe80B20 inserted at both Co$_{20}$Fe$_{80}$B$_{20}$/MgO interfaces of dual-MgO free layers (FLs) in bottom-pinned magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs). MTJ stacks are annealed for 30 min at 350 $^\circ$C and 400 $^\circ$C in a vacuum after film deposition. Current-in-plane tunneling measurements are carried out to characterize magnetotransport properties of the MTJs. Conventional magnetometry measurements and ferromagnetic resonance are conducted to estimate the saturation magnetization, the effective perpendicular anisotropy field and the Gilbert damping of dual-MgO FLs as a function of the Fe$_{80}$B$_{20}$ thickness and annealing temperatures. With ultrathin Fe$_{80}$B$_{20}$ (0.2 - 0.4 nm) inserted, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of FLs increases with similar tunnel magneto-resistance (TMR) and low damping values. As Fe$_{80}$B$_{20}$ layer thickness further increases (0.6 - 1.2 nm), both TMR and PMA degrade, and damping increases dramatically. This study demonstrates a novel approach to tune properties of MTJ stacks with dual-MgO FLs up to 400 $^\circ$C annealing, which enables MTJ stacks for various applications.

We demonstrate that perpendicular anisotropy can be induced in Co2FeAl0.5Si0.5 by depositing the Heusler alloy on a tungsten seed layer. This is increased by elevating the deposition temperature to a moderate value up to 335 K. These perpendicular layers can be implemented into GMR devices, showing layer-thickness dependent switching without the use of an antiferromagnetic pinning-layer. These layers can be implemented into the manufacturing process of read-heads, where temperatures are limited.

Nanometer-thick epitaxial Co films intercalated between graphene (Gr) and a heavy metal (HM) substrate are promising systems for the development of spin–orbitronic devices due to their large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). A combination of theoretical modeling and experiments reveals the origin of the PMA and explains its behavior as a function of the Co thickness. High quality epitaxial Gr/Con/HM(111) (HM = Pt,Ir) heterostructures are grown by intercalation below graphene, which acts as a surfactant that kinetically stabilizes the pseudomorphic growth of highly perfect Co face-centered tetragonal (fct) films, with a reduced number of stacking faults as the only structural defect observable by high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements show that such heterostructures present PMA up to large Co critical thicknesses of about 4 nm (20 ML) and 2 nm (10 ML) for Pt and Ir substrates, respectively. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements show an inverse power law of the anisotropy of the orbital moment with Co thickness, reflecting its interfacial nature, that changes sign at about the same critical values. First principles calculations show that, regardless of the presence of graphene, ideal Co fct films on HM buffers do not sustain PMAs beyond around 6 mLs due to the in-plane contribution of the inner bulk-like Co layers. The large experimental critical thicknesses sustaining PMA can only be retrieved by the inclusion of structural defects that promote a local hcp stacking such as twin boundaries or stacking faults. Remarkably, a layer resolved analysis of the orbital momentum anisotropy reproduces its interfacial nature, and reveals that the Gr/Co interface contribution is comparable to that of the Co/Pt(Ir)., Financial support from MINECO (Grant Nos. We report a significant Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) at interfaces comprising hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and Co. By comparing the behavior of these phenomena at graphene/Co and h-BN/Co interfaces, it is found that the DMI in latter increases as a function of Co thickness and beyond three monolayers stabilizes with one order of magnitude larger values compared to those at graphene/Co, where the DMI shows opposite decreasing behavior. At the same time, the PMA for both systems shows similar trends with larger values for graphene/Co and no significant variations for all thickness ranges of Co. Furthermore, using micromagnetic simulations we demonstrate that such significant DMI and PMA values remaining stable over large range of Co thickness give rise to formation of skyrmions with small applied external fields in the range of 200-250 mT up to 100 K temperatures. Poly(ʟ-lactide) (PLLA) films, even of high thickness, exhibiting co-crystalline and crystalline α phases with their chain axes preferentially perpendicular to the film plane (c⊥ orientation) have been obtained. This c⊥ orientation, unprecedented for PLLA films, can be achieved by the crystallization of amorphous films as induced by low-temperature sorption of molecules being suitable as guests of PLLA co-crystalline forms, such as N,N-dimethylformamide, cyclopentanone or 1,3-dioxolane. This kind of orientation is shown and quantified by two-dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction (2D-WAXD) patterns, as taken with the X-ray beam parallel to the film plane (EDGE patterns), which present all the hk0 arcs centered on the meridian. PLLA α-form films, as obtained by low-temperature guest-induced crystallization, also exhibit high transparency, being not far from those of the starting amorphous films.

Poloidal asymmetries of the propagation velocity of density fluctuations perpendicular to the magnetic field measured with Doppler reflectometry have been reported in several magnetic confinement plasma devices. Careful analysis of a large variety of different low confinement mode plasma scenarios performed at the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak does not reveal such an asymmetry outside the uncertainties of the evaluation process of the measurement data. The perpendicular velocity is investigated between mid-radius and the plasma edge and follows the poloidal dependence of the E × B drift velocity regardless of the probed turbulence structure size. Compared to measurements of a charge exchange recombination spectroscopy diagnostic this points towards a significantly smaller phase velocity than the E × B drift velocity. The analysis technique is presented in a representative discharge together with a sensitivity study of the impact of density, magneto hydrodynamic equilibrium and diagnostic alignment on the interpretation of the measured Doppler shift using ray tracing and thus on poloidal asymmetries. Three more highly different plasma scenarios with poloidally symmetric velocity profiles are shown.

We have inquired into a means to decrease the number of charged particles escaping from a loss cone of a magnetic mirror reactor as many as possible. We previously reported the way of installing a supplemental magnetic mirror (which has a cyclotron heating space within) at the exit of a main magnetic bottle. The cyclotron heating space was set to increase a reflection-efficiency of the supplemental mirror. We could not suppress the loss of the escaping deuteron ions sufficiently even with a very long mirror and a very powerful electric field. Then, in this work we propose a new plan of installing another supplemental mirror besides the previous supplemental mirror. A new mirror is set perpendicularly to the center axis of the main bottle. By the addition of the perpendicular mirror, an efficiency of sending back of escaping deuteron ions is considerably theoretically improved. Also in the previous work, since we did not touch how to supply a high-frequency electric field to the cyclotron heating space, here we consider supplying it by an extraordinary-wave with a cyclotron frequency. It is mentioned that propagation of an extraordinary-wave with an electron cyclotron frequency depends on a magnetic field strength and density of escaping electrons.

We present a laboratory electromagnet capable of generating magnetic fields up to $\pm$0.48T, specifically designed as a perpendicular flux source for thin film samples in an ambient environment. The magnet features a 250mm diameter clear access bore above the sample plane, thus offering compatibility with a wide variety of experimental apparatus. Despite its generous size, the magnet thermally dissipates less than 1kW at maximum field. A shaped ferromagnetic core is used to amplify and homogenize the field $\mathbf{B}$, leading to an estimated uniformity of $\pm$1.5mT ($\lesssim$0.3%) in $\left|\mathbf{B}\right|$ within a 28mm$^2$ zone at maximum field. The sample stage is thermally regulated and isolated from the magnet, enabling temperature control with $\pm$5mK precision even at elevated magnetic fields., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Synthetic antiferromagnetic particles with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy offer a highly desirable platform for use in fluidic applications. This work illustrates their high level of switching field tunability and demonstrates the ability to use particle design to overcome unfavorable hysteretic changes during patterning to manufacture functional, low switching field nanodisks. This makes them ideal candidates for lab-on-chip technologies such as microfluidic sorting or detection devices.

Electronic supplementary material The online version of this article (10.1007/s40820-020-00480-8) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users., Graphene-based materials on wearable electronics and bendable displays have received considerable attention for the mechanical flexibility, superior electrical conductivity, and high surface area, which are proved to be one of the most promising candidates of stretching and wearable sensors. However, polarized electric charges need to overcome the barrier of graphene sheets to cross over flakes to penetrate into the electrode, as the graphene planes are usually parallel to the electrode surface. By introducing electron-induced perpendicular graphene (EIPG) electrodes incorporated with a stretchable dielectric layer, a flexible and stretchable touch sensor with “in-sheet-charges-transportation” is developed to lower the resistance of carrier movement. The electrode was fabricated with porous nanostructured architecture design to enable wider variety of dielectric constants of only 50-μm-thick Ecoflex layer, leading to fast response time of only 66 ms, as well as high sensitivities of 0.13 kPa−1 below 0.1 kPa and 4.41 MPa−1 above 10 kPa, respectively. Moreover, the capacitance-decrease phenomenon of capacitive sensor is explored to exhibit an object recognition function in one pixel without any other integrated sensor. This not only suggests promising applications of the EIPG electrode in flexible touch sensors but also provides a strategy for internet of things security functions. Magnetic properties of [Co(0.4 nm)/Pt(0.7 nm)]5 multilayers are tailored by controlling the sputtering voltage during the growth of cobalt layers by a facing target cathode. It is shown that increasing sputtering voltage up to 150 V leads to an improved crystalline texture and this results in larger magnetic anisotropies and out-of-plane coercive fields. At a higher cathode voltage of 540 V however crystalline texture quality slightly worsens and this is accompanied by a decrease in the effective anisotropy. Using facing target cathode sputtering, the crystalline structure of the multilayers can be controlled without applying any heat treatment and this can be used to optimize the magnetic properties of Co/Pt multilayers for specific applications.

A point spread function evaluation method for a microscope on the object plane that is perpendicular to the optical axis is proposed. The measurement of the incident beam direction from the dual position-sensitive-detector (PSD)-based units, the determination of the object plane perpendicularity and the paraxial region, and evaluation methods for the point spread function (PSF) are presented and integrated into the proposed method. The experimental verification demonstrates that the proposed method can achieve a 3D PSF on the perpendicular object plane, as well as magnification, paraxial region evaluation, and confirmation for any microscopic system.

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in the Ta/CoFeB/MgO system has been studied using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and vibrating sample magnetometry. The ratios of the orbital to spin magnetic moments of Co atoms in the Ta/CoFeB/MgO structures with PMA have been found to be enhanced by 100%, compared with the Ta/CoFeB/Ta structure without PMA. The orbital moments of Co are as large as 0.30 μ B, more than half of their spin moments in the perpendicularly magnetized Ta/CoFeB/MgO structures. The results indicate that the PMA observed in the CoFeB/MgO structures is related to the increased spin-orbital coupling of the Co atoms. This work offers experimental evidence of the correlation between PMA and the element-specific spin and orbital moments in the Ta/CoFeB/MgO systems.

Background Perpendicular transvalvular leakage (TVL) is occasionally observed after aortic valve replacement (AVR) in biological valves with a stent post, often originating from the base of the stent post. However, an observed perpendicular jet flow is not always a TVL. In rare cases, paravalvular leakages (PVLs) can be perpendicular and are present behind a TVL. In the present case, both PVL and TVL existed simultaneously as unusual perpendicular jet flows that originated from sites in close proximity to the stent post. Case presentation A 73-year-old man underwent AVR with a biological valve in the supra-annular position using the non-everting mattress suture technique with pledgets. After weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) revealed an unfamiliar perpendicular turbulent flow, similar to reported TVL, originating from the anterior stent post. Further TEE examination revealed a PVL had originated from the site between the sewing ring at the anterior stent post and native annulus attached to a pledget. The space between the sewing ring and annular retained native portion caused the perpendicular turbulent jet. Consequently, two types of perpendicular turbulent flows, TVL and PVL, existed adjacent to each other. After reinstitution of CPB, inspection of the prosthesis itself indicated it to be normal, but there was a region adjacent to the anterior stent post near the right coronary ostium where the tip of the curved Pean forceps entered between the sewing ring and the native annulus. The region was consistent with TEE findings. AVR was performed with the same prosthesis again. After weaning from CPB, immediate TEE revealed that the unusual perpendicular turbulent flows had disappeared and only a few small TVLs were observed. Regarding the disappearance of TVL, we considered that the fabric region of the prosthetic valve was covered with cellular elements to prevent the leak, as it was already used in AVR once and soaked in blood. Conclusions Perpendicular turbulent flow raises the possibility of both TVL and PVL in the case of AVR with stented bovine pericardial valves. For a differential diagnosis of TVL or PVL, it is important to know the surgical procedures and valve morphology.

Many single crystals have been developed and commercialized for optical isolators. However, optical isolator materials have been limited to isotropic crystals or to the isotropic direction (optic axis) of anisotropic crystals. This study investigates the wavelength dependences of linear birefringence, linear dichroism, Faraday rotation and magnetic-circular dichroism in a single crystal rare-earth fluoride, namely CeF3. Measurements were made in the direction parallel and perpendicular to the optic axis under an applied magnetic field. The magnetic field was generated by Nd-Fe-B magnets installed in the generalized-high accuracy universal polarimeter (G-HAUP). The first application of G-HAUP to a magneto-optical material is presented. In the CeF3 crystal, the Verdet constants along directions parallel and perpendicular to the optic axis were positive over the measured wavelength region (300–680 nm), and their magnitudes were nearly equal. The success in the accurate measurement on Faraday rotation along anisotropic directions has opened the way to study on optical isolators along the direction other than optic axis.

Injection of pure spin current using a nonlocal geometry is a promising method for controlling magnetization in spintronic devices from the viewpoints of increasing freedom in device structure and avoiding problems related to charge current. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of magnetization switching of a perpendicular magnetic nanodot induced by vertical injection of pure spin current from a spin polarizer with perpendicular magnetization. In comparison with direct spin injection, the current amplitude required for magnetization switching is of the same order and shows smaller asymmetry between parallel-to-antiparallel and antiparallel-to-parallel switching. Simulation of spin accumulation reveals that, in the case of nonlocal spin injection, the spin torque is symmetric between the parallel and antiparallel configuration because current flows through only the spin polarizer, not the magnetic nanodot. This characteristic of nonlocal spin injection is the origin of the smaller asymmetry of the switching current and can be advantageous in spintronic applications.

Solar wind ions are observed to be heated in the directions perpendicular to the large-scale magnetic field, with preferential heating given to heavy ions. In the solar corona, this heating may be responsible for the generation of the wind itself. It is likely that this heating results from the dissipation of plasma turbulence, but the specific kinetic mechanism that produces these preferential effects is not known. Solar wind turbulence at proton scales is often characterized in terms of highly oblique kinetic Alfv\'en waves (KAWs), which have been thought to dissipate through the Landau resonance and yield parallel heating. We show that the quasilinear resonant cyclotron interaction between KAWs and solar wind ions can actually produce perpendicular ion heating. We present an illustrative calculation of a steady, critically balanced spectrum of KAWs acting on homogeneous ion distributions with a plasma \b{eta} = 0.1, representative of turbulent conditions in the fast solar wind near 20 Rs. The KAWs are described here by a two-fluid dispersion relation. We find that thermal protons are strongly heated in the perpendicular direction within a typical quasilinear time of several thousand gyroperiods, which corresponds to only a few minutes at 20 Rs. Alpha particles in the same fluctuation field are heated to similar perpendicular thermal speeds, equivalent to the greater than mass proportional perpendicular temperatures that are commonly observed. Magnetic properties of [Co(0.4 nm)/Pt(0.7 nm)] 5 multilayers are tailored by controlling the sputtering voltage during growth of cobalt layers by a facing target cathode. It is shown that increasing sputtering voltage up to 150 V leads to an improved crystalline texture and this results in larger magnetic anisotropies together with increased out-of-plane coercive fields. At a higher cathode voltage of 540 V, however, crystalline texture quality slightly worsens and this is accompanied by a decrease in the effective anisotropy. Using facing target cathode sputtering, the crystalline structure of the multilayers can be controlled without applying any heat treatment and this can be utilized to optimize the magnetic properties of Co/Pt multilayers for specific applications.

We have developed a fast method to design perpendicular permanent magnets for simplifying stellarator coils based on existing codes. Coil complexity is one of the main challenges for stellarators. To date, only electromagnetic coils have been used to generate 3D fields for stellarators. Permanent magnets provide an alternative way to produce the desired magnetic field for optimized stellarators. In this paper, we revisit the concept of representing surface current using magnetic dipoles and carry out numerical validations. A surface magnetization is proven to be equivalent to the surface current that can be linearly solved by existing coil design codes. An incremental multi-layer method has been developed to obtain a practical solution that is attainable with present permanent magnets. With this method, we can reproduce a half-Tesla NCSX configuration using specially designed neodymium magnets together with simple planar coils. A new method for designing stellarators with variable-thickness perpendicular permanent magnets has been developed, based on a two-step magnet design strategy that we previously proposed for designing stellarators with standardized magnet blocks. Our design strategy uses a ‘local compensation’ method to obtain an initial magnet design and a ‘global fine-tuning’ method to further optimize the initial design. The new method is compared to the previously proposed Fourier decomposition method, and the results indicate that this new method can yield a similar magnet design for an N fp = 2 quasi-axisymmetric stellarator at a lower computational cost. High accuracy is achieved, as demonstrated by a normal magnetic field square on the plasma surface of χ B 2 = 3.43 × 1 0 − 8 T 2 m 2 , a maximum residual of B n = 3.44 G s for a ∼1 T total field, and a flux-surface-averaged residual B n of B n / B = 3.16 × 1 0 − 5 relative to the total field. Furthermore, the new method can automatically yield a magnet design with large areas of continuous vacancies for ports and plasma access, which is more flexible than the Fourier decomposition method. These results indicate that the new method is robust and effective when used to design stellarators with variable-thickness perpendicular permanent magnets, and, most importantly, that the two-step magnet design strategy has great potential to develop permanent magnet design methods suitable for various magnet layouts.

Collimated illumination with a light-emitting diode (LED) is widely used in the residential, commercial, and industrial inspection fields. A slim LED illuminator composed of multi-parabolic surfaces to combine perpendicular collimated illuminations is proposed here. The multi-parabolic illuminator can produce a collimated rectangular illumination where light angle distributions for perpendicular axes can independently be controlled by different parabolic surfaces. This independence of the control makes the design of the illuminator simple. A prototype of the multi-parabolic illuminator is fabricated with an LED chip size of 3×3 mm and an opening aperture size of 20×60 mm. A maximum width of the prototype is 20 mm. The prototype demonstrates a production of a highly collimated rectangular illumination with half-intensity angles of about 7 degrees and 34 degrees for respective perpendicular axes.

The effect of a dc bias magnetic field on the dynamic magnetization process was examined to evaluate the enhancement in the heating ability of magnetic nanoparticle (NP) suspensions for magnetic hyperthermia and the possibility of combination therapies. A dc magnetic field may be used with a combination of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic drug delivery techniques during magnetic hyperthermia. Measuring dynamic magnetization curves under an alternating magnetic field (AMF) is another technique to understand the heating mechanism in hyperthermia. The dynamic magnetization curves were measured under an AMF at frequencies between 50 and 200 kHz with a maximum amplitude ( $\mu _{0}H_{0}$ ) of 70 mT. A dc bias magnetic field ( $\mu _{0}H_{\mathrm {dc}}$ ) of up to 50 mT was applied parallel and/or perpendicular to the AMF. Two NP suspensions were measured; one is a commercially available superparamagnetic (SPM) suspension, Resovist® (Ferucarbonate), and the other is SCF-3, which is composed of spherical ferromagnetic Co substituted Fe3O4 NPs and shows ferromagnetic characteristics in its dried form. When a dc magnetic field (dc-MF) was applied perpendicular to the AMF, the loop areas decreased more gradually than when a parallel dc-MF was applied. It is concluded that the relaxation behaviors of magnetic suspensions are responsible to the reduction in loop areas by an external dc-MF based on a comparison with the ferromagnetic NP suspension.

CoFeB/MgO-based perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions (p-MTJ’s) with high anisotropy and low damping are critical for spin-torque transfer random access memory (STT-RAM). Most schemes of making the pinned CoFeB fully perpendicular require ferrimagnets with high damping constants, a high temperature-grown L10 alloy, or an overly complex multilayered synthetic antiferromagnet (SyAF). We report a compositional study of perpendicular CoxPd alloy-pinned Co20Fe60B20/MgO based MTJ stacks, grown at moderate temperatures in a planetary deposition system. The perpendicular anisotropy of the CoxPd alloy films can be tuned based on the layer thickness and composition. The films were characterized by alternating gradient magnetometry (AGM), energy-dispersive X-rays (EDX), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Current-in-plane tunneling (CIPT) measurements have also been performed on the compositionally varied CoxPd MTJ stacks. The CoxPd alloy becomes fully perpendicular at approximately x = 30% (atomic fraction) Co. Full-film MTJ stacks of Si/SiO2/MgO (13)/CoXPd100−x (50)/Ta (0.3)/CoFeB (1)/MgO (1.6)/CoFeB (1)/Ta (5)/Ru (10), with the numbers enclosed in parentheses being the layer thicknesses in nm, were sputtered onto thermally oxidized silicon substrates and in-situ lamp annealed at 400 °C for 5 min. CIPT measurements indicate that the highest TMR is observed for the CoPd composition with the highest perpendicular magnetic anisotropy.

We propose a direct self-assembly mechanism towards obtaining defect-free perpendicular lamellar phases of diblock copolymer (BCP) thin films. In our numerical study, a thin BCP film having a flat top surface is casted on a uni-directional corrugated solid substrate. The substrate is treated chemically and has a weak preference toward one of the two BCP components. Employing self-consistent field theory (SCFT), we find that there is an enhanced synergy between two substrate characteristics: its topography (geometrical roughness) combined with a weak surface preference. This synergy produces the desired perpendicular lamellar phase with perfect inplane ordering. Defect-free BCP lamellar phases are reproducible for several random initial states, and are obtained for a range of substrate roughness and chemical characteristics, even for a uni-directional multi-mode substrate roughness. Our theoretical study suggests possible experiments that will explore the interplay between uni-directional substrate corrugation and chemical surface treatment. Sub-10 nm patterns prepared by directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymer (BCP) thin films offer a breakthrough method to overcome the limitations of photolithography. Perpendicular orientation of the BCP nanostructures is essential for lithographic applications, but dissimilar surface/interfacial energies of two blocks generally favour parallel orientations, so that the perpendicular orientation could only be obtained under very limited conditions. Here, we introduce a generalized method for creating perpendicular orientations by filtered plasma treatment of the BCP films. By cross-linking the surface of disordered BCP films using only physical collisions of neutral species without ion bombardment or UV irradiation, neutral layers consistent with the BCP volume fraction are produced that promote the perpendicular orientations. This method works with BCPs of various types, volume fractions, and molecular weights individually at the top and bottom interfaces, so it was applied to orientation-controlled 3D multilayer structures and DSA processes for sub-10 nm line-spacing patterns., Dissimilar surface and interfacial energies of the two blocks in BCP thin films favour parallel orientations, whereas a perpendicular orientation is essential for directed self-assembly. Here, the authors demonstrate perpendicular microdomain orientations by filtered plasma treatment of the surface of the BCP film.

Large-scale two-dimensional (2-D) full particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations are carried out for studying periodic self-reformation of a supercritical collisionless perpendicular shock with an Alfvén–Mach number MA∼6. Previous self-consistent one-dimensional (1-D) hybrid and full PIC simulations have demonstrated that the periodic reflection of upstream ions at the shock front is responsible for the formation and vanishing of the shock-foot region on a timescale of the local ion cyclotron period, which was defined as the reformation of (quasi-)perpendicular shocks. The present 2-D full PIC simulations with different ion-to-electron mass ratios show that the dynamics at the shock front is strongly modified by large-amplitude ion-scale fluctuations at the shock overshoot, which are known as ripples. In the run with a small mass ratio, the simultaneous enhancement of the shock magnetic field and the reflected ions take place quasi-periodically, which is identified as the reformation. In the runs with large mass ratios, the simultaneous enhancement of the shock magnetic field and the reflected ions occur randomly in time, and the shock magnetic field is enhanced on a timescale much shorter than the ion cyclotron period. These results indicate a coupling between the shock-front ripples and electromagnetic microinstabilities in the foot region in the runs with large mass ratios. Keywords. Landau levels of AB-stacked four- to six-layer graphene were studied experimentally in the presence of a perpendicular electric field. The Landau levels at a low magnetic field showed a characteristic structure that originated from the mini-Dirac cones created by the perpendicular electric fields. Six-fold or twelve-fold degenerate Landau levels arising from the mini-Dirac cones were observed in the vicinity of the charge neutrality point as a radial structure in a plot of their Landau fan diagrams. The structure of four-layer graphene had approximate electron-hole symmetry near the charge neutrality point, while the five- and six-layer graphene showed asymmetry. Numerical calculations of the dispersion relation and Landau level spectra indicated that trigonal warping played an essential role in forming the experimentally observed Landau level structure in low magnetic fields. In high magnetic fields, trigonal warping becomes less significant and the Landau level spectra become simpler, approaching those that were calculated without considering trigonal warping. The appearance of mini-Dirac cones in a perpendicular electric field would be a common feature of AB-stacked multilayer graphene.

Photonic crystal has been proved to manipulate light effectively and improve the performance of solar cells. In this paper, high-performance GaAs-based solar cells with photonic crystal were fabricated to decrease the dependence on the angle of incident light. Photoluminescence (PL) intensity of solar cells with photonic crystal reduced only 8% when the incident angle changed from 10° to 30°, while the PL intensity of the ordinary solar cells decreased 39% under the same condition. It manifests the photonic crystal can manipulate the incident light in turn reduce the dependence of incident light angle. Besides, the short circuit current of solar cells was increased by 32% after the photonic crystal was added. When the incident angle of light increased to 30° from 0°, the short circuit current of ordinary solar cell decreased 29.5%, while that of solar cell with photonic crystals reduced 12%. Correspondingly, the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of ordinary solar cells was reduced 31.2%. In contrast, solar cells with photonic crystal decreased only 11.5%. The enhancement factor of the PCE of solar cells with photonic crystal to that of ordinary solar cells increases from 1.26 to 1.6 as the incident angle rises to 30°from 0°. In summary, solar cells with photonic crystal are less sensitive to the incident angle and could absorb more light without angle limits, then increase the PCE. These solar cells with photonic crystals are promising in low-cost and high power conversion efficiency solar cell fields.

We report on the large-scale integration of graphene layers over a FePd perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) platform, targeting further downscaling of spin circuits. An L10 FePd ordered alloy showing both high magneto-crystalline anisotropy and a low magnetic damping constant, is deposited by magnetron sputtering. The graphene layer is then grown on top of it by large-scale chemical vapor deposition. A step-by-step study, including structural and magnetic analyses by x-ray diffraction and Kerr microscopy, shows that the measured FePd properties are preserved after the graphene deposition process. This scheme provides a graphene protected perpendicular spin electrode showing resistance to oxidation, atomic flatness, stable crystallinity, and perpendicular magnetic properties. This, in turn, opens the way to the generalization of hybrid 2D-materials on optimized PMA platforms, sustaining the development of spintronics circuits based on perpendicular spin-sources as required, for instance, for perpendicular-magnetic random-access memory schemes.

The Peierls substitution in the energy functions of a carbon nanotube's sub-bands is carried out for a carbon nanotube of arbitrary chiral indices subjected to a perpendicular uniform magnetic field. The Peierls substitution represents a zeroth-order term of the asymptotically convergent power series in the magnetic field. It provides a very good approximation for the electron energy spectrum of a carbon nanotube subjected to a perpendicular uniform magnetic field, for magnetic fields currently accessible in laboratories.

Spin-transfer torque magnetic random access memory (STT-MRAM) is currently explored to challenge the dynamic random access memory and embedded memory applications. Perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction (p-MTJ) stacks used in the STT-MRAM must be compatible with CMOS back-end-of-line processing, such as high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, high tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR), and intact resistance area (RA) product at temperatures, as high as 400 °C. In this paper, we deposited a bottom-pinned Co/Ni-based p-MTJ stack with a trilayered Co/spacer/CoFeB as a reference layer and a CoFeB film as the storage layer. By replacing the standard Ta spacer material with CoFeBTa, the thickness of the spacer layer can be increased from 4 to 8 A without TMR and RA penalty, which is beneficial to process controllability. Moreover, the TMR increases for an 8 A CoFeB polarizer from 125% to 145% for a similar RA product after a 300 °C 30 min anneal. In addition, the thermal budget of the p-MTJ stack containing a CoFeBTa spacer was improved. The p-MTJ stack with a 12 A CoFeBTa reference layer spacer can even withstand annealing at 400 °C for 90 min and can retain a TMR value of 100% at RA 10 $\Omega \cdot \mu \text{m}^{2}$ , while TMR dropped below 40% for the p-MTJ stack containing a pure Ta spacer layer.

The perpendicular to grain compressive strength of timber is known to be much lower than the strength parallel to grain. Many timber structures, however, rely on this property especially in bearings that occur frequently in building practice. The linear elastic–plastic behaviour of structural timber loaded perpendicular to grain has been a problematic issue for decades which is reflected in the differences between the prediction models in structural design codes over the world. This article concentrates on the evaluation of the strength predictive ability of three of the latest bearing models having an empirical, semi-empirical or physical background. On the bases of a large database of over 1000 test results covering eight practical load cases, it is shown that the accuracy and consistency of the physical model is the best, which makes it a potential candidate for the new generation timber design codes.

Magnetic field correction factors are needed for absolute dosimetry in magnetic resonance (MR)-linacs. Currently experimental data for magnetic field correction factors, especially for small volume ionization chambers, are largely lacking. The purpose of this work is to establish, independent methods for the experimental determination of magnetic field correction factors k B ⃗ , Q in an orientation in which the ionization chamber is parallel to the magnetic field. The aim is to confirm previous experiments on the determination of Farmer type ionization chamber correction factors and to gather information about the usability of small-volume ionization chambers for absolute dosimetry in MR-linacs. The first approach to determine k B ⃗ , Q is based on a cross-calibration of measurements using a conventional linac with an electromagnet and an MR-linac. The absolute influence of the magnetic field in perpendicular orientation is quantified with the help of the conventional linac and the electromagnet. The correction factors for the parallel orientation are then derived by combining these measurements with relative measurements in the MR-linac. The second technique utilizes alanine electron paramagnetic resonance dosimetry. The alanine system as well as several ionization chambers were directly calibrated with the German primary standard for absorbed dose to water. Magnetic field correction factors for the ionization chambers were determined by a cross-calibration with the alanine in an MR-linac. Important quantities like k B ⃗ , Q for Farmer type ionization chambers in parallel orientation and the change of the dose to water due the magnetic field c B ⃗ have been confirmed. In addition, magnetic field correction factors have been determined for small volume ionization chambers in parallel orientation. The electromagnet-based measurements of k B ⃗ , Q for 7 MV / 1.5 T MR-linacs and parallel ionization chamber orientations resulted in 0.9926(22), 0.9935(31) and 0.9841(27) for the PTW 30013, the PTW 31010 and the PTW 31021, respectively. The measurements based on the second technique resulted in values for k B ⃗ , Q of 0.9901(72), 0.9955(72), and 0.9885(71). Both methods show excellent accuracy and reproducibility and are therefore suitable for the determination of magnetic field correction factors. Small-volume ionization chambers showed a variation in the resulting values for k B ⃗ , Q and should be cross-calibrated instead of using tabulated values for correction factors.

Perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions with double-interface free layer (p-DMTJs), which exhibit enhanced tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) and thermal stability (Δ) at the nanoscale, have received considerable interest as building blocks for spintronic data storage devices. Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) techniques have been widely employed in mainstream magnetic storage to enable ultrahigh storage density. However, the data access is achieved by sensing the stray field of the selected magnetic element using a mechanical “read head”, resulting in an unfavorable speed limitation and design complexity. To address this issue, integrating laser-assisted switching with a high-performance magnetic tunnel junction has received interest in spintronic R&D; however, it has not yet been achieved. In this study, we experimentally explored femtosecond (fs) laser-assisted switching in a p-DMTJ device using a direct electrical TMR readout. We demonstrate two reconfigurable switching operations, i.e., binary “write” and unidirectional “reset”, by the interplay of the fs laser and synchronized magnetic field sequence. We further explored the joint effect, and a switching phase diagram was obtained. The effect of the stray field of p-DMTJ, as well as laser helicity, on switching is also discussed. Results show the feasibility of fs laser-assisted writing p-DMTJs, which can pave the way in high-density optospintronic storage applications.

We study magnetic-field directed self-assembly of magnetic nanoparticles onto templates recorded on perpendicular magnetic recording media, and quantify feature width and height as a function of assembly time. Feature widths are determined from Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images, while heights are obtained with Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). For short assembly times, widths were ~150 nm, while heights were ~14 nm, a single nanoparticle on average with a 10:1 aspect ratio. For long assembly times, widths approach 550 nm, while the average height grows to 3 nanoparticles, ~35 nm, a 16:1 aspect ratio. We perform magnetometry on these self-assembled structures and observe the slope of the magnetic moment vs. field curve increases with time. This increase suggests magnetic nanoparticle interactions evolve from nanoparticle–nanoparticle interactions to cluster–cluster interactions as opposed to feature–feature interactions. We suggest the aspect ratio increase occurs because the magnetic field gradients are strongest near the transitions between recorded regions in perpendicular media. If these gradients can be optimized for assembly, strong potential exists for using perpendicular recording templates to assemble complex heterogeneous materials.

Ab initio calculations of voltage-controlled perpendicular magnetic anisotropy predict that the adjunction of Pt at the top of Co/MgO interface in Pt/Co/MgO ultrathin structures would enhance the perpendicular anisotropy and its electric field ( $E$ -field) variation rate. Following these theoretical expectations, using the magnetron-sputtering technique, we first designed and elaborated magnetic multilayered samples which have subsequently been patterned by UV lithography in magnetotransport devices. The as-deposited samples show perpendicular magnetization configuration whose $E$ -field modulation has been studied by anomalous Hall effect magnetometry experiments under applied $E$ -field in patterned devices. The measured voltage anisotropy modulation effect is found to be asymmetric with respect to the $E$ -field polarity, in qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions.

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is a basic problem for laser–plasma interactions. In this work, two perpendicular linear polarization lasers with different frequencies are combined to form a new beam. The polarization of the new beam varies between linear and ellipse, while the intensity remains constant. By adopting this method, a significant suppression of SBS is predicted due to the reduction in the effective wave–wave interaction lengths. Additionally, two linearly polarized beams would be easier to use in an experiment than an alternate approach using two circularly polarized beams. The suppression of SBS is modeled with a nonlinear wave–wave coupling model, and the model is verified with 1D particle-in-cell simulations.

Colloidal magnetophoretic lensing of water suspended micrometer-sized superparamagnetic beads (SPBs) above a topographically patterned magnetic thin film system with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is demonstrated. The magnetic pattern consisting of concentric annuli of micron-sized widths has been superimposed with a rotating external magnetic field, and it is shown that the trajectories of the SPBs above this structure are similar to light rays in an optical focusing lens. SPB trajectories converge towards the central region and have divergent trajectories while passing the center. The experimental findings are corroborated by a quantitative model for the SPB trajectories. The magnetophoretic lensing effect leads to a high SPB concentration in the center of the pattern and may be useful for applications where SPBs have to approach each other in a controlled way.

In this article, the magnetic properties of hexagonally ordered antidot arrays made of Dy13Fe87 alloy are studied and compared with corresponding ones of continuous thin films with the same compositions and thicknesses, varying between 20 nm and 50 nm. Both samples, the continuous thin films and antidot arrays, were prepared by high vacuum e-beam evaporation of the alloy on the top-surface of glass and hexagonally self-ordered nanoporous alumina templates, which serve as substrates, respectively. By using a highly sensitive magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) measurements an interesting phenomenon has been observed, consisting in the easy magnetization axis transfer from a purely in-plane (INP) magnetic anisotropy to out-of-plane (OOP) magnetization. For the 30 nm film thickness we have measured the volume hysteresis loops by VSM with the easy magnetization axis lying along the OOP direction. Using magnetic force microscopy measurements (MFM), there is strong evidence to suggest that the formation of magnetic domains with OOP magnetization occurs in this sample. This phenomenon can be of high interest for the development of novel magnetic and magneto-optic perpendicular recording patterned media based on template-assisted deposition techniques.

In this paper, a 30-kW permanent magnet superconducting synchronous generator is proposed for the marine application. The perpendicular magnetic field on the high temperature superconducting (HTS) coils will cause a large drop in critical current and create much more ac loss. The magnetic field consists of two parts, i.e., self-field created by the transport current and external field created by the rotor rotation. It can be reduced by decreasing the distance between the HTS coil and back iron, increasing the distance between the HTS coil and iron teeth or adding the slot wedges in the open slots. These are effective methods to improve HTS armatures’ critical current by reducing the perpendicular magnetic field on the HTS coil surface. Changing the turns ratio of HTS coils has little influence on reducing the maximum perpendicular magnetic field. However, it could decrease the number of flux lines passing through the HTS coil and reduce the total ac loss of the HTS coil.

Fuel channels in CANDU® (CANada Deuterium Uranium) nuclear reactors consist of two non-concentric tubes; an inner pressure tube (PT) and a larger diameter calandria tube (CT). Up to 400 horizontally mounted fuel channels are contained within a calandria vessel, which also holds the heavy water moderator. Certain fuel channels pass perpendicularly over horizontally oriented tubes (nozzles) that are part of the reactor’s liquid injection shutdown system (LISS). Due to sag, these fuel channels are at risk of coming into contact with the LISS nozzles. In the event of contact between the LISS nozzle and CT, flow-induced vibrations from within the moderator could lead to fretting and deformation of the CT. LISS nozzle proximity to CTs is currently measured optically from within the calandria vessel, but from outside the fuel channels. Measurement by an independent means would provide confidence in optical results and supplement cases where optical observations are not possible. Separation of PT and CT, known as gap, is monitored from within the PT using a transmit-receive eddy current probe. Investigation of the eddy current based gap probe as a tool to also measure proximity of LISS nozzles was carried out experimentally in this work. Eddy current response as a function of LISS-PT proximity was recorded. When PT-CT gap, PT wall thickness, PT resistivity and probe lift-off variations were not present this dependence could be used to determine the LISS-PT proximity. This method has the potential to provide LISS-CT proximity using existing gap measurement data. Obtaining LISS nozzle proximity at multiple inspection intervals could be used to provide an estimate of the time to LISS-CT contact, and thereby provide a means of optimizing maintenance schedules.
