Abstract A novel, promising biocomposite was synthesized through the free radical polymerization method using methyl methacrylate (MMA), acrylic acid (AA), and hydroxyapatite derived from oyster shells (Os‐HA). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) peaks indicate the conjugation of Os‐HA in the biocomposite. From the TGA analysis, it was observed that a weight loss of nearly 2% is achieved at 210°C, up to 15% at 210 to 420°C, and up to 95% at 420 to 580°C. The SEM image shows the uniform dispersion of the Os‐HA particles and strong interaction with the copolymer matrix. The broad spectrum at 2θ = 14.6° in XRD analysis indicates the amorphous nature of poly(MMA‐co‐AA)/Os‐HA. The higher inhibition zone of the biocomposite is observed at 125 μL against E. coli bacteria. The maximum water absorption is observed at 15 wt% of Os‐HA. The young's modulus gradually increases, while the impact strength decreases up to 20 wt% of Os‐HA. The artificial neural network (ANN) model has been used to assess the optimum values of impact strength, tensile strength, and Young's modulus of the biocomposite material. The correlation factor (R = 0.998) of the ANN model data indicates greater accuracy of the experimental result.

The nanocomposites are synthesized by the co-precipitation method with different ratios of hydroxyapatite and collagen. Their mechanical, biological, and degradation properties are analyzed using various experimental and computational techniques. Attenuated total reflection–Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction unveil the low crystallinity and nanoscale particle size of hydroxyapatite (22.62 nm) and hydroxyapatite/collagen composites (14.81 nm). These findings are substantiated by scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, confirming the Ca/P ratio between 1.65 and 1.53 and attesting to the formation of non-stoichiometric apatites in all samples, further validated by molecular simulation. The antimicrobial activity of the nanocomposites is evaluated in vitro against several bacterial and fungal strains, demonstrating their medical potential. Additionally, in silico analyses are performed to predict the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion properties and the bioavailability of the collagen samples. This study paves the way for the development of novel biomaterials using chemoinformatics tools and methods, facilitating the optimization of design and synthesis parameters, as well as the prediction of biological outcomes. Future research directions should encompass the investigation of in vivo biocompatibility and bioactivity of the nanocomposites, while exploring further applications and functionalities of these innovative materials. Background: A good biocomposite is a structure that can provide opportunities for cells to adhere, proliferate, and differentiate. It is affected by the characteristics of a material. As bone tissue regeneration occurs, biomaterials must have a high swelling ability and low biodegradability. The high swelling capability will have a larger surface area that can support maximal cell attachment and proliferation on the biocomposite surface, which accelerates the regeneration process of bone defects. Purpose: The study aimed to analyze the characteristics of swelling and biodegradation of bovine amniotic membrane-hydroxyapatite (BAM-HA) biocomposite with various ratios. Methods: The BAM-HA biocomposite with a ratio of 30:70, 35:65, and 40:60 (w/w) was synthesized using a freeze-dry method. The swelling test was done by measuring the initial weight and final weight after being soaked in phosphate-buffered saline for 24 hours and the biodegradation test was done by measuring the initial weight and final weight after being soaked in simulated body fluid for seven days. Results: The swelling percentage of BAM-HA biocomposite at each ratio of 30:70, 35:65, and 40:60 (w/w) was 303.90%, 477.94%, and 574.19%. The biodegradation percentage of BAM-HA biocomposite at each ratio of 30:70, 35:65, and 40:60 was 9.43%, 11.05%, and 12.02%. Conclusion: The BAM-HA biocomposite with a ratio of 40:60 (w/w) has the highest swelling percentage while the 30:70 (w/w) ratio has the lowest percentage of biodegradation.

Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) is a novel polymeric material intended for applications in tissue engineering (TE). This study involves synthesizing the PGS prepolymer (pPGS) and subsequent manufacturing of porous PGS-based scaffolds with an addition of hydroxyapatite (HAp) by means of thermally induced phase separation followed by thermal cross-linking and salt-leaching (TIPS-TCL-SL). The study aims to investigate the effect of the apatite filler content on properties and morphology of porous PGS/HAp scaffolds. The emphasis is put on the mechanical behavior of the material characterized by means of compression tests and dynamic thermal mechanical analysis (DMTA). In addition to the reference polymer scaffold, the composites with filler contents of 10, 20 and 30 wt% have been examined. Our research revealed that the HAp content does not affect the mechanical properties in a directly proportional manner. The 30 wt% addition of HAp resulted in frayed structure and decrease in the mechanical parameters in comparison to other tested specimens. On the other hand, an addition of 10% did not sufficiently boost the properties. Therefore, a 20% addition of HAp was concluded to have superior mechanical properties in comparison to other analyzed specimens. A similar relationship results from the DMTA studies. Moreover, the strain sweep and frequency sweep tests confirmed the stability of the mechanical parameters in various conditions, as well as the elastomeric nature of the materials. In situ facile synthesis and the characterization of nanohydroxyapatite/chitosan (nHAP/CS) biocomposites were investigated for examining their potential applications in orthopedic implant technology. Firstly, the bare nHAP, europium-doped hydroxyapatite (Eu-nHAP), yttrium-doped hydroxyapatite (Y-nHAP), and Eu- and Y-codoped hydroxyapatite (Eu,Y-nHAP) nanoparticles were synthesized by the wet precipitation technique using biowaste-eggshell-derived calcium oxide powders. Then, through ultrasonication using the nanohydroxyapatite/chitosan mixtures (molar ratio = 1:2), the nHAP/CS, Eu-nHAP/CS, Y-nHAP/CS, and Eu,Y-nHAP/CS biocomposites were fabricated. Among them, Eu,Y-nHAP/CS showed higher cell viability (94.9%), higher solubility (pH = 7.6 after 21 days), and greater antibacterial activity than those of the other composites. In addition, Eu,Y-nHAP/CS exhibited improved mechanical properties compared with the other composites. For example, the nanoindentation test displayed the Eu,Y-nHAP/CS-coated 316L stainless steel implant to possess a higher Young's modulus value (9.24 GPa) and greater hardness value (300.71 MPa) than those of the others. This study aimed to develop injectable chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) and bovine hydroxyapatite (BHA) hybrid biocomposites, and characterise their physiochemical properties for use as a dental pulp-capping material. The COS powder was prepared from chitosan through hydrolytic reactions and then dissolved in 0.2% acetic acid to create a solution. BHA was obtained from waste bovine bone and milled to form a powder. The BHA powder was incorporated with the COS solution at different proportions to create the COS–BHA hybrid biocomposite. Zirconium oxide (ZrO2) powder was included in the blend as a radiopacifier. The composite was characterised to evaluate its physiochemical properties, radiopacity, setting time, solubility, and pH. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic analysis of the COS–BHA biocomposite shows the characteristic peaks of COS and hydroxyapatite. Compositional analysis via ICP-MS and SEM-EDX shows the predominant elements present to be the constituents of COS, BHA, and ZrO2. The hybrid biocomposite demonstrated an average setting time of 1 h and 10 min and a pH value of 10. The biocomposite demonstrated solubility when placed in a physiological solution. Radiographically, the set hybrid biocomposite appears to be more radiopaque than the commercial mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). The developed COS-BHA hybrid biocomposite demonstrated good potential as a pulp-capping agent exhibiting high pH, with a greater radiopacity and reduced setting time compared to MTA. Solubility of the biocomposite may be addressed in future studies with the incorporation of a cross-linking agent. In the last few decades, hydroxyapatite (HA) has become one of the most highly prized biominerals in the biomedical industry for orthopedic and dental applications. The focus of this research was to synthesize biomimetic HA from Tridax procumbens (TP) leaf extract and investigate their antibiofilm properties. The HA was made using the sol-gel method and the HA-TP biocomposite was made by precipitation method. The d.nm size of HA and HA-TP biocomposite was determined as 193.28 and 258.14 d.nm, respectively. The zeta potential of HA and HA-TP biocomposite was determined as -21.2 and -18.3 mV, respectively, and found highly stable. The FTIR study revealed that phytochemicals of TP were successfully impregnated into HA-TP biocomposite. The HA and HA-TP biocomposite were found spherical and agglomerated from SEM analysis. In HR-TEM analysis, the average diameter of the HA and HA-TP biocomposite were 16.57 - 64.22 nm and 51.71 - 138.68 nm, respectively. According to the EDX analysis, HA is primarily composed of calcium, oxygen, and phosphate, whereas, HA-TP biocomposite is primarily composed of calcium, phosphate, oxygen, and carbon. In the antioxidant assay, the IC50 value (concentration required to scavenge 50% of free radicals) of HA-TP biocomposite was determined as 156.69 ± 14.02 and 180.21 ± 12.84 µg/mL in DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging assays, respectively. The MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) and MBC (minimum bactericidal concentration) of assynthesized HA-TP biocomposite against Staphylococcus aureus - ATCC 13565 and Escherichia coli - MTCC 41 were observed as 181.09 ± 21.47 and 317.30 ± 41.03, and 157.59 ± 32.18 and 264.03 ± 21.58 µg/mL, respectively. The assynthesized HA-TP biocomposite has detrimentally affected the biofilm formation of both the tested bacteria S. aureus - ATCC 13565 and E. coli -- MTCC 41. The study concluded that the as-synthesized HA-TP biocomposite could be highly helpful in the biomedical field for alleviating oxidative-stress-related disorders and inhibiting microbial biofilm formation. The current treatment of osteomyelitis includes systemic antibiotic therapy and a debridement procedure of the formed biofilm and necrotic tissue. Moreover, cements and three-dimensional scaffolds are used both for the delivery of therapeutic agents and as fillers for bone defects. The aim of our research was to test, on cellular cultures, the biocompatibility of a previously synthesized microporous biocomposite containing hydroxyapatite and a collagen matrix including a therapeutic agent (ciprofloxacin and gentamicin). This study intends to analyze the properties and potential applications of a novel composite coating composed of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and silver-doped hydroxyapatite (HAPAg) produced from waste eggshells, which was dip-coated onto Ti6Al4V substrates. Medical implants frequently made of the titanium alloy Ti6Al4V can benefit greatly from surface coatings in terms of biocompatibility and performance. In order to add antibacterial and osteoconductive characteristics, silver-doped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles were dispersed within a PMMA matrix to create the PMMA/HAPAg composite coating. The coated samples report an average contact angle (CA) between 70 and 750 and total surface free energy (SFE) between 35 and 50 mJ/m2, which signifies its improved wettability. The 7.03% change in hydrophilicity was observed between PMMA/H0 (75.270 ± 1.690) and PMMA/H20 (700 ± 1.440) coated samples. The increase in adhesion strength and coating thickness with the increase in HAPAg reinforcement was observed. The surface morphology of the defective zones was examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and information on the elemental composition of synthesized was obtained using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICPMS), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffractogram (XRD). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) reveals the surface roughness; root mean square roughness, roughness profile, skewness and kurtosis of the coated samples. The contact angle reports the hydrophilicity and SFE. Finally, the results conclude that the composite coating had a consistent distribution of HAPAg nanoparticles incorporated within the PMMA matrix. The minimal presence of Ag ions on the surface indicates the coating's potential antibacterial properties, and it is highly recommended for dental applications. The present examination includes manufacture and portrayal of cryogel bio-composite implants containing chitosan-gelatin (CS-GT), cerium–zinc doped hydroxyapatite (CS-GT/Ce-Zn-HA) by cryogelation technique. The prepared cryogel biocomposites (CS-GT/HA and CS-GT/Ce-Zn-HA) were described by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) contemplates. The expansion of Ce-Zn in the CS-GT implants essentially expanded growing, diminished swelling, expanded protein sorption, and expanded bactericidal movement. The CS-GT/Ce-Zn-HA biocomposite had non-toxic towards rodent osteoblast cells. So the created CS-GT/Ce-Zn-HA biocomposite has favorable and potential applications over the CS-GT/HA platforms for bone tissue engineering.

The key challenge in tissue engineering is to develop structures with sufficient characteristics that will replicate the natural extracellular matrix (ECM) to promote tissue regeneration. Copper and manganese minerals substituted hydroxyapatite (CuMn-HA)/chitosan (CTS)–polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVD) were fabricated by sol–gel and solvent casting techniques, respectively. Fabricated biocomposites have been identified by the use of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for the analysis of functional groups, crystalline phases and surface morphology. The XRD and FTIR spectra of the biocomposite revealed the existence of functional groups and crystalline phases in the biocomposites. The SEM images revealed biocomposite and inclusion of CuMn-HA in rough morphology. Physicochemical characteristics such as swelling and compressive strength have been examined in the preparation of biocomposite materials. Biocomposites (10, 20, 30 wt% of CuMn-HA biocomposite) exhibited great material characteristics where 30% displayed the minimum swelling and a compressive property of 71 MPa was tested. It displayed the highest inhibition zone towards bacteria population and was also found to be blood-compatible with a haemolytic value of only about 2.5% relative to other compounds. Finally, in-vitro cell cultures were performed in biocomposite scaffolds to determine the effects of CuMn-HA on the proliferation of osteoblast cells, resulting in biocomposites contrast to pristine PVD/CTS. The development of science and technology related to bone implant material, researchers want to develop materials that have properties near human bones and improve the quality. This study was conducted to determine the composition of the mixture that can pass nozzle at room temperature. It is expected that in this study, the mixture is able to pass through the small nozzle size so that it can print specimens precisely according to the size of the design to be printed. Output mixture through a nozzle is said well if the output is continuous and homogeneous. The quality of the composition of the mixture, the material output from the nozzle will be printed by ASTM F451-95 and compressive test. This mixture consists of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), methylmethacrylate (MMA) and hydroxyapatite (HA) by mixing methods manually. PMMA and MMA used in the type of heat curing, while HA derived from fish scales. Through several experiments, there is composition that can pass nozzle and have a high compressive strength value, that is composition PMMA : MMA instead of 1 : 1 (w/w) with mixture 20% HA and have compressive strength value 31,20 MPa, the second composition PMMA : MMA instead of 2 : 1 (w/v) with mixture 10% HA and have compressive strength value 25,62 MPa. This composition was chosen for further research with the Portabee Kit machine.

The biocompatibility of orthopaedic implants and their effects on fracture healing have key roles for success. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of a novel biocomposite consisting of hydroxyapatite (HA), hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), chitosan (Cs), and type 1 collagen (Ct1) on biocompatibility and fracture healing in rats. A total of 60 adult male Wistar rats weighing 300-500 g were used in the study. The rats were randomly divided into 2 groups named A (uncoated/control) and B (biocomposite coated). Biocomposite (HA/h-BN/Cs/Ct1) coated and uncoated stainless-steel implants were used as intramedullary pins. Groups A and B were divided into subgroups of A1 and B1 (15th day), A2 and B2 (30th day), A3 and B3 (45th day) according to the date of euthanasia. Clinical, radiographic, haematological, biochemical, and histopathological findings were evaluated by pairwise comparisons. The findings were consistent and similar. No statistically significant difference was found for a finding disturbing the biocompatibility. Histopathological examinations showed that coating biomaterials did not resorb over the course of 15, 30, and 45 days. It is thus revealed that the content is biocompatible. However, it has been concluded that it is necessary to increase the physical strength of the coating surface against sterilization and surgical procedures. As a result, based on the interpretations of the clinical, radiographic, haematological, biochemical, and histopathological findings, the biocompatibility of HA/h-BN/Cs/Ct1 biocomposite materials has been revealed. This paper proposes the development of a biomimetic composite based on naturally derived biomaterials. This freeze-dried scaffold contains a microwave-synthesized form of biomimetic hydroxyapatite (HAp), using the interwoven hierarchical structure of eggshell membrane (ESM) as bio-template. The bone regeneration capacity of the scaffold is enhanced with the help of added tricalcium phosphate from bovine Bone ash (BA). With the addition of Gelatin (Gel) and Chitosan (CS) as organic matrix, the obtained composite is characterized by the ability to stimulate the cellular response and might accelerate the bone healing process. Structural characterization of the synthesized HAp (ESM) confirms the presence of both hydroxyapatite and monetite phases, in accordance with the spectroscopy results on the ESM before and after the microwave thermal treatment (the presence of phosphate group). Morphology studies on all individual components and final scaffold, highlight their morphology and porous structure, characteristics that influence the biocompatibility of the scaffold. Porosity, swelling rate and the in vitro cytotoxicity assays performed on amniotic fluid stem cells (AFSC), demonstrate the effective biocompatibility of the obtained materials. The experimental results presented in this paper highlight an original biocomposite scaffold obtained from naturally derived materials, in a nontoxic manner.

Type I collagen and nanocrystalline-substituted hydroxyapatite are the major components of a natural composite—bone tissue. Both of these materials also play a significant role in orthopedic surgery and implantology; however, their separate uses are limited; apatite is quite fragile, while collagen’s mechanical strength is very poor. Therefore, in biomaterial engineering, a combination of collagen and hydroxyapatite is used, which provides good mechanical properties with high biocompatibility and osteoinduction. In addition, the porous structure of the composites enables their use not only as bone defect fillers, but also as a drug release system providing controlled release of drugs directly to the bone. This feature makes biomimetic collagen–apatite composites a subject of research in many scientific centers. The review focuses on summarizing studies on biological activity, tested in vitro and in vivo.

The present study evaluated a new concept of combined scaffolds as a promising bone replacement material for patients with a bone tumour or bone metastasis. The scaffolds were composed of hydroxyapatite doped with selenium ions and a biodegradable polymer (linear or branched), and contained an active substance—bisphosphonate. For this purpose, a series of biodegradable polyesters were synthesized through a ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone or d,l-lactide in the presence of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) or hyperbranched 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid polyester-16-hydroxyl (bis-MPA) initiators, substances often used in the synthesis of medical materials. The polymers were obtained with a high yield and a number-average molecular weight up to 45,300 (g/mol). The combined scaffolds were then manufactured by a direct compression of pre-synthesized hydroxyapatite doped with selenite or selenate ions, obtained polymer and pamidronate as a model drug. It was found that the kinetic release of the drug from the scaffolds tested in vitro under physiological conditions is strongly dependent on the physicochemical properties and average molecular weight of the polymers. Furthermore, there was good correlation with the hydrolytic biodegradation results of the scaffolds fabricated without drug. The preliminary findings suggest that the fabricated combined scaffolds could be effectively used for the sustained delivery of bioactive molecules at bone defect sites.

Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) based polymer biocomposites have been widely used in biomedical industry because of biocompatibility and improved mechanical properties. The goal of this study was to produce ultra high molecular weight (UHMW) polyethylene/nHA composite via heat-assisted friction stir processing and to investigate the effects of process parameters on composite’s microstructure and tensile characteristics. The process parameters include rotational speed (ω), feed rate (f), volume fraction of nHA (v), and shoulder temperature (T). ANOVA was performed to identify the significant process parameters. Moreover, empirical models for tensile properties were developed and validated. Microscopic analysis revealed that the process parameters substantially affect the dispersion of reinforcing particles, formation of defects, and mixing of materials. Low levels of ω and T and high levels of f and v lead to defects (agglomeration of reinforcing particles, voids, and channels). Five percent volume of nHA with medium levels of other process parameters resulted in better material mixing, minimum defects, and better mechanical properties (10% increase in strength with only 1% reduction in percent elongation, relative to the parent material). Healing of large bone defects requires implants or scaffolds that provide structural guidance for cell growth, differentiation, and vascularization. In the present work, an agarose-hydroxyapatite composite scaffold was developed that acts not only as a 3D matrix, but also as a release system. Hydroxyapatite (HA) was incorporated into the agarose gels in situ in various ratios by a simple procedure consisting of precipitation, cooling, washing, and drying. The resulting gels were characterized regarding composition, porosity, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility. A pure phase of carbonated HA was identified in the scaffolds, which had pore sizes of up to several hundred micrometers. Mechanical testing revealed elastic moduli of up to 2.8 MPa for lyophilized composites. MTT testing on Lw35human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) and osteosarcoma MG-63 cells proved the biocompatibility of the scaffolds. Furthermore, scaffolds were loaded with model drug compounds for guided hMSC differentiation. Different release kinetic models were evaluated for adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) and suramin, and data showed a sustained release behavior over four days.

In the present study, we aimed at fabricating an osteoinductive biocomposite scaffold using keratin obtained from human hair, jellyfish collagen and eggshell-derived nano-sized spherical hydroxyapatite (nHA) for bone tissue engineering applications. Keratin, collagen and nHA were characterized with the modified Lowry method, free-sulfhydryl groups and hydroxyproline content analysis, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), attenuated total reflectance-fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) which confirmed the success of the extraction and/or isolation processes. Human adipose mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs) were isolated and the cell surface markers were characterized via flow cytometry analysis in addition to multilineage differentiation capacity. The undifferentiated hAMSCs were highly positive for CD29, CD44, CD73, CD90 and CD105, but were not seen to express hematopoietic cell surface markers such as CD14, CD34 and CD45. The cells were successfully directed towards osteogenic, chondrogenic and adipogenic lineages in vitro . The microarchitecture of the scaffolds and cell attachment were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cell viability on the scaffolds was assessed by the MTT assay which revealed no evidence of cytotoxicity. The osteogenic differentiation of hAMSCs on the scaffolds was determined histologically using alizarin red S, osteopontin and osteonectin stainings. Early osteogenic differentiation markers of hAMSCs were significantly expressed on the collagen-keratin-nHA scaffolds. 316L stainless steel and Hydroxyapatite (5, 20 and 50 wt. (%) HA)-316L stainless steel composites were fabricated by mechanical alloying technique, pressing and sintering from 316L and HA powders. The corrosion behavior of both sintered 316L and HA-316L composites was evaluated by electrochemical techniques in simulated body fluid (Ringer's solution) and in 0.1M HCl solution which simulates occluded cell corrosion conditions. The results indicate that 316L stainless steel and HA-316L composites are passive in Ringer's solution and active in HCl solution. All materials are highly corrosion resistant in Ringer's solution with corrosion current density in the order of 10-6 A cm-2 or less. Both 316L stainless steel and 5% HA-316L composite present good corrosion resistance in HCl with corrosion current density in the order of 10-5 A cm-2. The corrosion resistance decreases with increasing HA content in both solutions.

The austenitic stainless steel 316L is the most used metallic biomaterials in orthopedics applications, especially in the manufacture of articulated prostheses and as structural elements in fracture fixation, since it has high mechanical strength. However, because it is biologically inactive, it does not form chemical bond with bone tissue, it is fixed only by morphology. The development of biocomposites of stainless steel with a bioactive material, such as hydroxyapatite - HA, is presented as an alternative to improve the response in the tissue-implant interface. However significant reductions in mechanical properties of the biocomposite can occur. Different compositions of the biocomposite stainless steel 316L/HA (5, 20 and 50 wt. (%) HA) were prepared by mechanical alloying. After milling the powders for 10 hours, the different compositions of the biocomposite were compacted isostatically and sintered at 1200 ºC for 2 hours. The mechanical properties of the biocomposites were analyzed by compression tests. The powders and the sintered composites were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Nano-bioapatite (BAP) powder was successfully acquired from chicken femur bones via chemical treatment followed by calcination. The isolation of nano-bioapatite powder from chicken bone has not been published so far. The bioapatite powder was chemically and structurally characterized by elemental analysis (AAS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. The nano BAP powder showed needleshaped morphology. The crystallite size distribution and specific surface area proved the nanostructured character of the sample. Chemical analysis together with FTIR spectrometry have demonstrated that the BAP powder was Ca-deficient with Na, Mg and carbonate substitutions that make the BAP suitable for application as a filler in biocomposites.

Hydroxyapatite (HAp) has been used extensively in medical applications for repair or replacement of bone tissues in human body system. It is chemically similar to the mineral component of bone and teeth and will form an artificial bone-like structure with the surrounding bone tissue when implanted. However, sintered hydroxyapatite material exhibits relatively poor mechanical properties than natural bone and as such, improvement of mechanical properties are necessary. One of the candidate materials for the reinforcing phase to HAp is zirconia, ZrO 2 . Medical applications of ZrO 2 implants confirmed their satisfactory biocompatibility, although it cannot bond well to bone tissue. In this study, ZrO 2 /HApbiocomposites were fabricated with the objective to improve the strength and toughness of the biomaterial. Commercial CaO-ZrO 2 (CZ) was selected as the reinforced material to the HAp matrix. Small amounts of CaF 2 were added to improve sinterability and the phase stability of these biocomposites. Conventional ceramic processing route was used to prepare ZrO 2 /HAp samples, which involved milling and mixing, compaction and sintering. X-ray diffraction (XRD), linear shrinkages, density and porosity, flexural strength, Vickers microhardness, toughness, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the (ZrO 2 /HAp) biocomposites. XRD results indicate phase stability of biocomposites to a temperature of 1200 °C. Shrinkage of fired samples were very uniform with increasing temperature, with slightly lower shrinkage in thickness direction. In general, strength of the reinforced ZrO 2 /HAp was successfully increased from 35.70 MPa to 52.88 MPa and the toughness was increased from 0.65 MPa.m 1/2 to 1.33 MPa.m 1/2 as well. Three types of calcium precursors (nitrate, hydroxide and catbonate) were used in the synthesis of carbonated hydroxyapatite (cHA) using a precipitation method via a chemical reaction with di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate as the phosphate precursor. The precipitation method was chosen over many other methods due to its flexibility to changes in processing parameters to control the phases formed, the particle size, as well as, the morphology of the as-synthesized powders. The focus of the study was on cHA as it is deemed to mimic the composition of the human bone much closer as compared to the stoichiometric hydroxyapatite. When the chemical reaction was completed, the precipitate was dried, ground and characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), electron microscopy (both FESEM and TEM) and particle size analysis. Only the nitrate precursor produced a single-phase carbonated hydroxyapatite (cHA), whilst the other two precursors produced a secondary calcite phase or did not react fully. This is due to the low solubility of the calcium hydroxide and the incomplete reaction of the calcium carbonate. In order to prepare sophisticated biomaterials using a biomimetic approach, a deeper understanding of biomineralization is needed. Of particular importance is the control and regulation of the mineralization process. In this study, a novel bilayer rate-controlling model was designed to investigate the factors potentially influencing mineralization. In the absence of a rate-controlling layer, nano-scale hydroxyapatite (HA) crystallites exhibited a spherical morphology, whereas, in the presence of a rate-controlling layer, HA crystallites were homogeneously dispersed and spindle-like in structure. The mineralization rate had a significant effect on controlling the morphology of crystals. Furthermore, in vitro tests demonstrated that the reaction layer containing spindle-like HA crystallites possessed superior biological properties. These results suggest that a slow mineralization rate is required for controlling the morphology of inorganic crystallites, and consumption by the rate-controlling layer ensured that the ammonia concentration remained low. This study demonstrates that a biomimetic approach can be used to prepare novel biomaterials containing HA crystallites that have different morphologies and biological properties. The present study evaluated a new concept of combined scaffolds as a promising bone replacement material for patients with a bone tumour or bone metastasis. The scaffolds were composed of hydroxyapatite doped with selenium ions and a biodegradable polymer (linear or branched), and contained an active substance-bisphosphonate. For this purpose, a series of biodegradable polyesters were synthesized through a ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone or D,L-lactide in the presence of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) or hyperbranched 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid polyester-16-hydroxyl (bis-MPA) initiators, substances often used in the synthesis of medical materials. The polymers were obtained with a high yield and a number-average molecular weight up to 45,300 (g/mol). The combined scaffolds were then manufactured by a direct compression of pre-synthesized hydroxyapatite doped with selenite or selenate ions, obtained polymer and pamidronate as a model drug. It was found that the kinetic release of the drug from the scaffolds tested in vitro under physiological conditions is strongly dependent on the physicochemical properties and average molecular weight of the polymers. Furthermore, there was good correlation with the hydrolytic biodegradation results of the scaffolds fabricated without drug. The preliminary findings suggest that the fabricated combined scaffolds could be effectively used for the sustained delivery of bioactive molecules at bone defect sites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work presents a novel composite hydrogel consisting of silk fibroin (SF) and nanohydroxyapatite (nanoHA) prepared by a new and innovative method using ethanol as gelling agent capable of forming hydrogels in few minutes. The properties of the composite material, such as the microstructure as well as the chemical and physical properties were studied. Moreover in␣vitro studies of osteoblastic citocompatibility were performed. The microporosity and macroporosity obtained combined with interconnected porous structure and a uniform dispersion of nanoHA particles throughout the fibroin matrix makes composite hydrogel suitable for bone regeneration. The compression modulus of composite hydrogels was increased as the nanoHA concentration increased from 10 to 15 wt.% and the water uptake ability of these materials decreased with the incorporation of nanoHA. The metabolic and alkaline phosphatase activities of osteoblastic cells were improved with the incorporation of nanoHA in the SF matrix providing a more promising material for bone tissue engineering.
