The thin layers in the ocean are temporally-coherent aggregations of phytoplankton with high concentrations at small vertical scales, presenting important hotspots of ecological activity. Lidar could identify thin phytoplankton layers at a large spatial scale due to its capabilities of profile detection with a high efficiency. However, studies that linked thin layers to environmental factors are few, which limits our understanding of the layer formation mechanism. This paper investigates the characteristics and formation conditions of thin phytoplankton layers in the northern Gulf of Mexico using airborne lidar. The results depict that the chlorophyll concentration determines the formation probability of the phytoplankton layer. The layer is mainly formed at concentrations less than 6 mg m−3 and mostly distributed at 2 mg m−3. In addition, layer thicknesses were within 5 m and layer depths were mainly in the range of 10–15 m. Layer depths in the nearshore region were shallower than those in the offshore region. We conclude that the characteristics and formation conditions of the thin phytoplankton layers depend on the nutrients and light that are related to the seabed topography, turbidity, eddies and upwelling. The Gulf of Mexico is a widely explored and producing region for offshore oil and gas resources, with significant submarine methane hydrates. Estimates of hydrate saturation and distribution rely on drilling expeditions and seismic surveys that tend to provide either large-scale estimates or highly localized well data. In this study, hydrate reserve characterization is done using numerical simulation at Green Canyon block 955 (GC955). In addition, coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) simulation results show that hydrate saturation and geobody distribution are determined by the thermodynamic conditions as well as reservoir structures, stratigraphic differences, and permeability differences. Hydrate formation due to upflow of free gas and dissociation due to gas production and oceanic temperature rise due to climate change are simulated. The abundance of free gas under the hydrate stability zone and favorable pressure and temperature meant little hydrate was depleted from the reservoir. Furthermore, the maximum displacement due to warming reached 0.5 m in 100 years and 4.2 m in 180 days based on a simulation of constant production of methane gas. The displacement direction and magnitude suggest that there is little possibility of slope failure. Therefore, the GC955 site studied in this paper can be considered a favorable site for potential hydrate exploitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Planning for sea level rise (SLR) is a complex process that involves scientific uncertainty and local and regional political tradeoffs. As part of a 6-year transdisciplinary research project in the northern Gulf of Mexico, we conducted focus groups with coastal stakeholders (natural resource managers, community planners, and environmental communicators) to gain a better understanding of their planning and adaptation activities for SLR. This paper reports on participants' perceptions about adaptation and their current adaptation activities and strategies. While stakeholders were concerned about SLR and thought adaptation had challenges, they still shared optimism and a commitment to planning. The findings identify different types of SLR adaptation initiatives in which participants were involved as well as types of perceived barriers to adaptation planning, and major recommended strategies to address them. The paper concludes with a discussion of findings, connections to related SLR adaptation literature, practical implications for coastal resiliency, and directions for future research. Oil spills at sea remain a serious threat to coastal settlements and sensitive ecosystems. Although the impacts of spills are contingent upon a variety of environmental factors and the chemical composition of the oil itself, spill effects can be long lasting in the pelagic zone with broad impacts on sensitive bacterial, microbial, plant, and animal communities. Efforts to contain, deflect, protect, and mitigate the effects of oil are increasingly important, given the massive social, economic, and environmental fallout connected to large spills. The purpose of this paper is to provide geographic perspective for protecting coastal areas with exclusion booms during oil spill events. Specifically, we introduce a generalized, extendable, spatial optimization model that simultaneously minimizes spill effects on vulnerable shorelines and the total costs associated with dispatching booms. The multiobjective model is solved with a weighting method to produce a Pareto optimal curve that reveals how the costs and protection operations change under different priorities. The Gulf of Mexico offshore decommissioning market is the most diverse and competitive service contract environment in the world. The purpose of this paper is to describe the business, engineering, and market environment of decommissioning services in the Gulf of Mexico, and to provide a first-order approximation of the number of structures expected to be removed over a 25 year time horizon. Decommissioning activities associated with offshore production are an important and specialized segment of marine construction that has received limited attention in the academic literature, yet is compelling because few industrial sectors have such well-understood and widely adopted abandonment requirements. This paper should appeal to practitioners and researchers interested in learning the processes involved in deconstruction and the basic structure of the industry. The regulatory requirements and primary stages of decommissioning are reviewed, and the management, bid/tender process, and negotiation strategies are described. A life expectancy model of the number of structures expected to be removed from the Gulf of Mexico is presented, along with a discussion of the model uncertainty and the limitations of the analysis. The Northern Gulf of Mexico hosts a severe dead zone, an oxygen-depleted area spanning 1,618,000 hectares, threatening over 40% of the U.S. fishing industry and causing annual losses of USD 82 million. Using a System Dynamics (SD) approach, this study examined the Mississippi–Atchafalaya River Basin (MARB), a major contributor to hypoxia in the Gulf. A dynamic model, developed with Vensim software version 10.2.1 andexisting data, represented the physical, biological, and chemical processes leading to eutrophication and simulated dead zone formation over time. Various policies were assessed, considering natural system variability. The findings showed that focusing solely on nitrogen control reduced the dead zone but required greater intensity or managing other inputs to meet environmental goals. Runoff control policies delayed nutrient discharge but did not significantly alter long-term outcomes. Extreme condition tests highlighted the critical role of runoff dynamics, dependent on nitrogen load relative to flow volume from upstream. The model suggests interventions should not just reduce eutrophication inputs but enhance factors slowing down the process, allowing natural denitrification to override anthropogenic nitrification. Previous research has shown that people use a benchmark hurricane as part of their preparation and evacuation decision-making process. While hurricanes are a common occurrence along the Gulf Coast, research on personal memories of past storms is lacking. Particularly, how well do people remember the track and geophysical hazards (wind speed, storm surge, and total rainfall) of past storms? The accurate or inaccurate recollection and perception of previous storm details can influence personal responses to future storms, such as the decision to evacuate or take other life-saving actions. Survey responses of residents in Alabama and Mississippi were studied to determine if people were accurately able to recall a notable storm's name when seeing an image of the storm's track. Those who were able to identify the storm by its track were also asked if they could remember the storm's maximum reported rainfall, maximum sustained winds, and storm surge at landfall. Results showed that there were statistically significant differences between the levels of accurate recall for different storms, with Hurricanes Katrina and Michael having the most correct responses. Regardless of the storm, most people struggled to remember geophysical hazards. The results of this study are important as they can inform broadcast meteorologists and emergency managers on forecast elements of the storm to better emphasize in future communication in comparison to the actual values from historical benchmark storms. The genus Amphictene is reported for the first time from Mexico. Previous records for America are restricted to Brazil (A. catharinensis) (Grube, 1870), and Guatemala (A. guatemalensis) (Nilsson, 1928). In this paper we describe a new species, Amphictene helenae sp. n., characterized by the presence of three pairs of tentacular cirri, while other species have only two pairs. The new species is closely similar to Amphictene catharinensis, and can be distinguished by the presence of a circular group of glandular papillae inserted between the lines of glandular cirri present from the second segment. A. guatemalensis is redescribed based on type material; it differs from the new species in the presence of two pairs of tentacular cirri on segments 1 and 2, six pairs of glandular cirri on the third segment, and four glandular lobes fused in pairs on the fourth segment. The southeastern United States Coastal Plain ecosystem contains baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) swamps and grass‐dominated marshes. These ecosystems also occurred on the exposed continental shelf during lower sea levels but are rarely preserved due to the mechanically erosive nature of transgression and regression. Two presently marine sites on the northeastern Gulf of Mexico's continental shelf contain well‐preserved woody terrestrial sediments that were the subject of previous studies. This study continues the investigation using geochemical (δ13C, δ15N, δ34S) and palynological characteristics of these formerly terrestrial sediments to determine if swamps and/or marshes existed at the time of deposition. The first site is located ∼20 km southeast of Horn Island, Mississippi (MS) and the core has terrestrial sediments radiocarbon dated to 11,066–10,228 (2σ) calibrated years BP (early Holocene). The second site is the "Alabama Underwater Forest" located ∼13 km south of Gulf Shores, Alabama (AL) and the cores have terrestrial sediments optically stimulated luminescence dated to 63 ka (±10 ka, 2σ) to 72 ka (±16 ka, 2σ) (late Pleistocene). Geochemical results for the MS sediments indicate a swamp‐to‐freshwater marsh transitional series, whereas the AL sediments indicate a swamp‐to‐saltwater marsh transitional series, both supported by palynological results. Further exploration of the geochemical results using linear discriminant analysis, trained with published geochemical data, supports the swamp and marsh interpretations. We conclude that the near‐pristine preservation of these woody deposits is not solely due to physical mechanisms, such as rapid burial, but is also coupled with anoxia‐ and euxinia‐driven biogeochemical reactions promoting wood and woody debris preservation in swamp and marsh environments. Plain Language Summary: Scientists have studied unique sites offshore of Alabama and Mississippi that contain soils, peat, wood, and tree stumps. Scientists have determined that the trees from the Alabama site are between 42,000 and 72,000 years old and were alive during the last ice age when sea levels were much lower than today. The Mississippi site contains woody peat sediments about 11,000 years old and occurred when sea levels were rapidly rising globally. These types of formally land‐based sediments are eroded as the sea level rises at the end of the glacial periods. Furthermore, wood and plant matter decay after the plant dies and become part of the soil. We investigated the chemistry of the preserved soils to understand the conditions that lead to their preservation. Chemical and pollen analyses found that these deposits are past swamp and marsh ecosystems that occurred on land similar to those occurring along the United States Gulf Coast today. Swamps and marshes have still waters with little oxygen that stop decay leading to the preservation of the wood and tree stumps. Swamps occur in depressions where water can collect and over time they fill with sediments. These preserved swamp deposits are time capsules from the past. During the period of 2018–2022, there were six named Loop Current Eddy (LCE) shedding events in the central Gulf of Mexico (GoM). LCEs form when a large anticyclonic eddy (AE) separates from the main Loop Current (LC) and propagates westward. In doing so, each LCE traps and advects warmer, saltier waters with lower Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations than the surrounding Gulf waters. This difference in water mass permits the study of the effectiveness of using Chl-a from satellite-derived ocean color to identify LCEs in the GoM. In this work, we apply an eddy-tracking algorithm to Chl-a to detect LCEs, which we have validated against the traditional sea surface height-(SSH) based eddy-tracking approach with three datasets. We apply a closed-contour eddy-tracking algorithm to the SSH of two model products (HYbrid Coordination Ocean Model; HYCOM and Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean; NEMO) and absolute dynamic topography (ADT) from altimetry, as well as satellite-derived Chl-a data to identify the six named LCEs from 2018 to 2022. We find that Chl-a best characterizes LCEs in the summertime due to a basin-wide increase in the horizontal gradient of Chl-a, which permits a more clearly defined eddy edge. This study demonstrates that Chl-a can be effectively used to identify and track LC and LCEs in the GoM, serving as a promising source of information for regional data assimilative models. Objective: The Atlantic Tripletail Lobotes surinamensis is a globally distributed subtropical and tropical fish species that inhabits estuaries throughout the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM), particularly during warm months. Little is known about distribution and residency patterns within estuaries, as the species is rarely caught in the recreational fishery, and virtually no commercial fishery exists for the species in the GOM. Methods: We used data from a long‐term fishery‐independent gill‐net survey to model estuarine distribution throughout Texas and to relate environmental variables to the Atlantic Tripletail catch. Result: Although there were no observable temporal trends in catch over the time series (1990–2022), the most recent 6 years included record catch in six of the 10 major Texas estuaries, possibly indicating a recent pulse in abundance. Catch throughout the time series was spatially aggregated in a small number of "hot spots" observed coastwide. Latitude was the best predictor of catch, although wind fetch and wind aspect (wind direction in relation to shoreline direction) were important predictors, and catch was highest near GOM inlets. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department gill‐net sampling program caught a range of Atlantic Tripletail between 171 and 880 mm total length, indicating a potential gear bias against juveniles. Conclusion: Despite this gear bias, these data shed light on the factors that drive Atlantic Tripletail estuarine distribution and abundance in the northwestern GOM. Wind‐driven passive movements in the estuary, combined with active selection of polyhaline habitats near GOM inlets, might be primary drivers of Atlantic Tripletail catch, thus supporting findings from previous studies. In Texas estuaries, Atlantic Tripletail are clustered in hot spots, which are typified by windward shorelines, and present mainly during the high‐use fishing season. The Gulf of Mexico red snapper fishery has been caught in a spiral of more restrictive regulations and disputed management. Current management measures have failed to reduce fishing mortality, owing in part to derby style fishing. A harvest tag system could potentially better limit fishing mortality without decreasing harvest seasons. In 2019/20 we surveyed 766 recreational anglers who fish in Florida with private boats to ascertain their preferences for regulation changes, and how they would alter their fishing effort if a harvest tag was implemented. Respondents were heterogeneous in terms of their preferences for harvest tags versus current management approaches, with most respondents preferring to maintain their current effort under the existing management approach of bag, size, and season limits. Respondents who preferred harvest tags indicated that they might increase or decrease fishing effort. Our findings suggest that more stringent regulations using current management approaches will not secure angler satisfaction or reduce fishing pressure on the red snapper stock. Harvest tags, though not preferred by all respondents, may allow regulators to better manage the number of anglers in the fishery and to rebuild the stock, although implementing this program will pose some challenges. This article focuses on developing models that estimate suspended sediment concentrations (SSCs) for the Lower Brazos River, Texas, U.S. Historical samples of SSCs from gauge stations and satellite imagery from Landsat Missions and Sentinel Mission 2 were utilized to develop models to estimate SSCs for the Lower Brazos River. The models used in this study to accomplish this goal include support vector machines (SVMs), artificial neural networks (ANNs), extreme learning machines (ELMs), and exponential relationships. In addition, flow measurements were used to develop rating curves to estimate SSCs for the Brazos River as a baseline comparison of the models that used satellite imagery to estimate SSCs. The models were evaluated using a Taylor Diagram analysis on the test data set developed for the Brazos River data. Fifteen of the models developed using satellite imagery as inputs performed with a coefficient of determination R2 above 0.69, with the three best performing models having an R2 of 0.83 to 0.85. One of the best performing models was then utilized to estimate the SSCs before, during, and after Hurricane Harvey to evaluate the impact of this storm on the sediment dynamics along the Lower Brazos River and the model's ability to estimate SSCs. On September 18, Category 4 Hurricane Ian made landfall near Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Island, two barrier islands on the northern Gulf of Mexico. In this paper, we present a novel set of observations from a post-event High Water Mark field survey as well as wavelet analysis of in-situ wave data. We also present a qualitative overview of some erosive effects and infrastructure damage. Measured peak surge elevations exceed 5 m, and wave plus surge elevations exceed 6.0 m (NAVD88). High Water Mark observations are consistent within the expected range produced by numerical hindcast models. A wavelet analysis, from one of the few wave records available during the storm, demonstrates the presence of long-period basin mode waves at a 40-min period. The 40-min wave appeared on the wave record before the storm surge, and the peak of this motion also occurred before the peak of the surge. In addition, the wavelet analysis reveals the presence of infragravity wave energy (periods between 30 s and 20 min). Together, these intermediate and long-period waves add over 40 cm to the total water level at peak energy. The measured field data shows a rapidly decreasing surge elevation within the first 300 m from the pre-storm shoreline, and we observe no statistically meaningful attenuation difference between the highly developed shoreline of Fort Myers and the more vegetated shoreline of Sanibel Island. However, the structural survey team observed more infrastructure damage in Fort Myers than Sanibel Island. • On September 28, 2022 Hurricane Ian made landfall in Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Island, Florida, USA. • Post-storm, our field survey team observed High Water Mark (HWM) and wave impacts in these areas. • Wavelet analysis reveals a peak in energy near a 40-min period that arrived before the main surge. • Long-period motions have the potential to add at least 40 cm to the quasi-steady surge. • Field observations reveal a rapid decrease in wave impact observations in the first 300 m from the shoreline in both study sites. • Sanibel, more vegetated, and Fort Myers, more developed, showed no statistically meaningful difference in surge attenuation. • However, Fort Myers experienced higher infrastructure damage than Sanibel Island. Coastal waters often experience enhanced ocean acidification due to the combined effects of climate change and regional biological and anthropogenic activities. Through reconstructing summertime bottom pH in the northern Gulf of Mexico from 1986 to 2019, we demonstrated that eutrophication‐fueled respiration dominated bottom pH changes on intra‐seasonal and interannual timescales, resulting in recurring acidification coinciding with hypoxia. However, the multi‐decadal acidification trend was principally driven by rising atmospheric CO2 and ocean warming, with more acidified and less buffered hypoxic waters exhibiting a higher rate of pH decline (−0.0023 yr−1) compared to non‐hypoxic waters (−0.014 yr−1). The cumulative effect of climate‐driven decrease in pH baseline is projected to become more significant over time, while the potential eutrophication‐induced seasonal exacerbation of acidification may lessen with decreasing oxygen availability resulting from ocean warming. Mitigating coastal acidification requires both global reduction in CO2 emissions and regional management of riverine nutrient loads. The first robust multi‐decadal pH reconstruction from 1986 to 2019 revealed recurring summer bottom acidification in the Gulf's oxygen‐depleted "dead zone." These seasonal acidification and year‐to‐year differences were driven predominantly by respiration intensified by eutrophication. However, over multi‐decadal timescale, rising atmospheric CO2 and ocean warming emerged as the dominant acidification drivers. More severe acidification occurred in the "dead zone" each summer, and these waters were acidifying more rapidly over decades. Looking ahead, climate‐driven pH decline is projected to become more pronounced over time, while potential eutrophication impacts may lessen as warming reduces oxygen availability. Mitigating acidification requires global actions to curb CO2 emissions for slowing long‐term trends, as well as regional nutrient management for restraining seasonal intensification of acidification in nutrient‐rich coastal ecosystems. The Loop Current Eddy (LCE) separation cycle energizes deep circulation in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, transferring energy from the surface intensified Loop Current (LC) to the typically quiescent lower layers. To document the generation and radiation of deep energy during this cycle, an array of 24 current and pressure recording inverted echo sounders (CPIES) is deployed in the region 89°W to 86°W, 25°N to 27.5°N with the intent to capture circulation near bathymetric features thought to be important for current-topographic interactions: Campeche Bank, Mississippi Fan, and West Florida Shelf. During the nearly two-year deployment, June 2019 to May 2021, three LCE separation events are observed, during which energy injected into the deep Gulf organizes into two distinct frequency bands (1/100 -- 1/20 days--1 and 1/20 -- 1/10 days--1). High-frequency variability dominates the array's northwest corner in the vicinity of the Mississippi Fan. Wave properties are consistent with topographic Rossby Waves (TRWs) with wavelengths of 150 -- 300 km. Their generation coincides with each LCE separation and is attributed to an upperlower layer resonant coupling between surface meanders and the sloping topography of the Mississippi Fan. TRWs captured by the CPIES array will likely intensify as wavelengths shorten in steeper topography along propagation pathways towards the Sigsbee Escarpment, generating hazardous currents with the potential to disrupt oil and gas operations in the region. The roles of the Loop Current (LC) and associated eddies in driving the circulation of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) have been investigated for several decades from different perspectives. Nevertheless, a clear understanding of the relative contributions of the wind forcing and the Loop Current eddies (LCEs) to the GoM circulation and variability remain lacking. In this study, the roles of these two factors in sustaining the less well-known western GoM upper-layer (~1000 m) circulation are investigated with two numerical experiments using the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM). First, we examine the relative contributions of the wind and LCEs in setting the mean circulation in the western GOM. We then perform a vorticity balance to analyze the relative importance of the physical processes, including the wind stress, involved in sustaining the western GoM circulation. The results show that the wind stress contributes to a mean anticyclonic circulation in the central and northwestern Gulf, while in the southwestern subregion both wind and LCEs combine to induce a cyclonic circulation, highlighting the role of wind stress curl and topographic confinement. The vorticity balance analysis conducted in the upper layer of the western basin shows that planetary vorticity and stretching are primarily responsible for the balance in time scales longer than weeks, and their covariability are good indicators of LCEs entering the central and northwestern subregions. However, the southwestern subregion is primarily driven by vortex stretching. Mean advection of vorticity and planetary vorticity are also contributors to the time-averaged vorticity field. Since the wind stress is distributed over the upper layer of the GoM, direct input of vorticity in the regional vorticity balance is negligible, but it does play a role through the vortex stretching term. The results also suggest that wind forcing acts to produce larger, faster moving, and longer-lived anticyclonic eddies that impact the western Gulf and modulate the circulation over monthly timescales. Objective: Crevalle Jack Caranx hippos are important coastal predators and support an increasingly popular catch‐and‐release sport fishery. However, population declines have recently been perceived by stakeholders in parts of the species' range. Here, we aimed to provide distribution and harvest trends for Crevalle Jack in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Methods: Long‐term fishery‐independent and fishery‐dependent data were collected by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department from 1983 to 2021. Bag seine, bay trawl, and gill‐net samples were collected in conjunction with angler creel surveys. Crevalle Jack that were observed in fishery‐independent sampling were used to assess patterns in both juvenile and adult relative abundance, distribution, and seasonality. In addition, boosted regression tree models were used to highlight important predictors of Crevalle Jack presence. Crevalle Jack harvest observed during angler surveys was used to describe the fishery, including differences in inshore and offshore catch patterns. Relative abundance of both juveniles and adults was variable across years but displayed no trend throughout the time series. Result: Crevalle Jack of all sizes were found within inshore waters, with subadults and large adults particularly reliant on estuarine systems. Recruitment peaked in early summer, with juveniles occupying all major estuaries along the coast. Shifts in recruitment were evident in bag seines, as the mean date of catch trended almost 2 weeks earlier over the study period. The Crevalle Jack fishery was spread across inshore and offshore waters, with significantly larger fish harvested offshore during summer. The majority of anglers who harvested Crevalle Jack stated that they were specifically targeting other species, thus supporting the notion that the targeted fishery is mainly catch and release. Conclusion: As Crevalle Jack declines have been noted elsewhere in the species' range, these results could help to inform future management decisions in Texas. Impact statementCrevalle Jack are an important sport fish in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. However, anglers have noted population declines in parts of their range. Here, we examined seasonality, distribution, and recruitment of Crevalle Jack in Texas. Results indicate that populations are stable and provide important insights into Crevalle Jack ecology. While the fishery is largely catch and release, the reliance of large Crevalle Jacks on estuaries and nearshore waters could see them increase in popularity as an accessible sport fish. This paper undertakes a risk assessment of coastal counties in the Gulf of Mexico impacted by the 2010 Deep Water Horizon oil spill. The study evaluates hazard risk from the perspective of community resilience, social capital, and access to resources. The proposed hazard risk location model re-specifies risk as a function of hazard, exposure, and coping ability. The model employs an autoregressive function and a threshold analysis to develop a place-based risk assessment. The results indicate that spatial variation in risk levels coincides with locational differences in social capital across the study area. Geographical proximity to the spill, population density, and unemployment rate are also key factors in determining overall risk. Furthermore, temporal variation in risk levels is determined by exposure to previous hazard events and changes in the business cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The U.S. Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is an excellent example of a working coast that supports a considerable degree of critical energy infrastructure across several sectors (crude oil, natural gas, electric power, petrochemicals) and functionalities (production, processing/refining, transmission, distribution). The coastal communities of the GOM form a highly productive and complicated human, physical, and natural environment that interacts in ways that are unlike anywhere else around the globe. This paper formulates a Coastal Infrastructure Vulnerability Index (CIVI) that characterizes interactions between energy assets and the physical and human aspects of GOM communities to identify and prioritize, using a multi-dimensional index, coastal vulnerability. The CIVI leads to results that are significantly different than traditional methods and serves as an alternative, and potentially more useful tool for coastal planning and policy, particularly in those areas characterized by very high infrastructure concentrations. The Gulf of Mexico (GoM) is home to some of the most energetic eddies in the ocean. Warm‐core rings detach from the Loop‐Current and drift through the basin, transporting large amounts of heat and salt. These eddies, known as Loop Current rings (LCRs) have a crucial role in the GoM's dynamics and in the weather of the eastern US, and this role is largely conditioned by their longevity and decay properties. Here, we use an empirical method to estimate the energy evolution of all LCRs detached since 1993. We found that, contrary to the commonly accepted idea that LCRs conserve their energy as they drift through the GoM and decay suddenly against the western platform, LCRs' energy decay is faster in the eastern basin, and they typically lose three‐quarter of their energy before encountering the continental shelf. We also show that wind‐current feedback contributes to the energy decay and conversion. Plain Language Summary: Ocean eddies can be long‐lived and carry large amounts of heat and salt across ocean basins and marginal seas. This is the case of Loop Current rings (LCRs), which are large warm‐core eddies drifting through the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). Understanding how these eddies lose their energy is key to understand their longevity and transport properties. Here, we use a previously validated empirical method based on in situ observations to estimate the time evolution of LCRs energy using satellite observations. We show that LCRs decay continuously during their life cycle, contrary to the previously accepted idea that they decay when collapsing against the western GoM's continental shelf. LCRs typically lose three‐quarter of their energy before reaching any topographic obstacle. Using wind observations, we also show that wind‐current interactions are key to the energy loss of these eddies. Internal wave activity in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) is investigated using a fleet of profiling floats. The floats continuously measured temperature and salinity as they drifted at a parking depth of 1500 dbar, allowing for the reconstruction of 2615 time series of isopycnal displacements. Thanks to the dense sampling of the eastern part of the GoM (east of 90°W), the geographical distribution of the internal waves displacement variance and available potential energy (APE) is revealed. The Loop Current (LC) influence region, between the Yucatan shelf to the west and the southern West Florida shelf to the east exhibits increased displacement variance and APE both in the continuum and near-inertial bands, while the north-eastern and central GoM show reduced internal wave activity. As the LC position fluctuates between a retracted and extended mode, we assessed the impact of the presence or absence of the LC in the increased internal wave activity region. It is shown that in the LC influence region, APE is increased (decreased) when the LC is present (absent), suggesting a strong control of the LC on deep internal waves activity. The 1500 dbar flow velocity, bottom roughness, and float altitude also seem to contribute to increased internal waves APE, but their influence is more subtle. The ocean circulation is modulated by meandering currents and eddies. Forecasting their evolution is a key target of operational models, but their forecast skill remains limited. We propose a machine learning approach that improves the output of an ocean circulation model by learning and predicting its systematic biases. This method can be applied a priori to any region, and is tested in the Gulf of Mexico, where the Loop Current (LC) and the large anticyclonic eddies that detach from it are major forecasting targets. The LC dynamics are recurrent and lie on a low‐dimensional dynamical attractor. Building upon the information gained analyzing this low dimensional attractor, we improve the representation of sea surface anomalies in model outputs through information from satellite altimeter data using a Sequence‐to‐Sequence model, which is a special class of Recurrent Neural Network. Building upon the HYCOM‐NCODA analysis system, we deliver a correction to the forecast at the observation resolution. For at least 15 days the proposed method learns to forecast the systematic bias in the HYCOM‐NCODA, outperforming persistence, and improving the forecast. This data‐driven approach is fast and can be implemented as an added step to any dynamical hindcasting or forecasting model. It offers an interesting avenue for further developing hybrid modeling tools. In these tools, fundamental physical conservations are preserved through the integration of partial differential equations which obey them. In addition, the method highlights specific deficiencies of the hindcast system that deserve further investigation in the future. We propose a generalized data‐driven method to improve a circulation model performance by identifying and predicting its systematic biases, and we test it in the Gulf of Mexico. We use a recurrent neural network to improve and predict the evolution of sea surface anomalies over 7–15 days using information obtained from satellite altimetry data. After going unreported in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean for 18 years (1988 to 2006), the Asian tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon, has recently reappeared in the South Atlantic Bight and, for the first time ever, in the Gulf of Mexico. Potential vectors and sources of this recent invader include: 1) discharged ballast water from its native range in Asia or other areas where it has become established; 2) transport of larvae from established non-native populations in the Caribbean or South America via ocean currents; or 3) escape and subsequent migration from active aquaculture facilities in the western Atlantic. This paper documents recent collections of P. monodon from the South Atlantic Bight and the Gulf of Mexico, reporting demographic and preliminary phylogenetic information for specimens collected between North Carolina and Texas from 2006 through 2012. The increased number of reports in 2011 and 2012, ranging from 102 mm to 298 mm total length, indicates that an adult population is present in densities sufficient for breeding, which is indicative of incipient establishment. Based on these reports of P. monodon, its successful invasion elsewhere, and its life history, we believe that this species will become common in the South Atlantic Bight and Gulf of Mexico in less than 10 years. Penaeus monodon is an aggressive predator in its native range and, if established, may prey on native shrimps, crabs, and bivalves. The impacts of an established P. monodon population are potentially widespread (e.g., alterations in local commercial fisheries, direct and indirect pressures on native shrimp, crab and bivalve populations, and subsequent impacts on the populations of other predators of those organisms) and should be considered by resource managers. Recent national assessments document that nitrogen-driven coastal eutrophication is widespread and increasing in the United States. This significant coastal pollution problem includes impacts including increased areas and severity of hypoxic and anoxic waters; alteration of food webs; degradation and loss of sea grass beds, kelp beds and coral reefs; loss of biodiversity; and increased incidences and duration of harmful algal blooms. In this paper, we review two complementary approaches to assessing the causes and consequences of these trends, as well as potential remedies for them. The first is a national-scale assessment, drawn primarily from expert knowledge of those most familiar with the individual estuaries and integrated into a common analysis framework. The second approach, focused on the Mississippi/Atchafalaya basin – the largest US drainage basin – draws upon both quantitative and qualitative analyses within a comprehensive framework, Integrated Assessment. Decommissioning offshore structures represents the end of the production life cycle, when wells are plugged and abandoned, infrastructure is removed, and the site is remediated and cleared of debris. Decommissioning operations are generally routine, involving standard, low-technology methods, over distinct stages and relatively short time horizons. Offshore operations are more uncertain and costly than onshore, however, due to the hostile ocean environment. Cost estimation is an important aspect of the business since engineers, project managers, and financial accountants frequently perform cost estimates in support of evaluating decommissioning alternatives, divestiture opportunities, and liability assessment. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the factors that impact the primary stages of decommissioning and to describe a general methodology to estimate cost functions. Mechanisms that inject cutting materials into a water jet and abrasively wear away steel/concrete are called abrasive cutters. The purpose of this paper is to model the cost of abrasive cutting operations associated with decommissioning offshore structures in the Gulf of Mexico. The elements of a standard abrasive cutting contract are presented and the total cost of a job is derived based on the parameters of the contract. The total cost to perform a severance operation is aggregated according to job type and normalized according to the number, size, and length of cut performed. Descriptive statistics are provided based on data collected over a three-year period from 2000–2002, and relations are derived that estimate the time and cost of a cutting operation based on various descriptor variables. A major conclusion of the analysis is that abrasive cutting is a structure-independent operation, or in other words, the total cost of performing the service does not depend on the characteristics of the structure and can only be predicted after the job is finished and the on-site time of the cutting crew is known. This is in sharp contrast to explosive cutting, where structural characteristics are very good indicators of job cost. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The number of built structures on the seabed, such as shipwrecks, energy platforms, and pipelines, is increasing in coastal and offshore regions. These structures, typically composed of steel or wood, are substrates for microbial attachment and biofilm formation. The success of biofilm growth depends on substrate characteristics and local environmental conditions, though it is unclear which feature is dominant in shaping biofilm microbiomes. The goal of this study was to understand the substrate- and site-specific impacts of built structures on short-term biofilm composition and functional potential. Seafloor experiments were conducted wherein steel and wood surfaces were deployed for four months at distances extending up to 115 m away from three historic (>50 years old) shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico. DNA from biofilms on the steel and wood was extracted, and metagenomes were sequenced on an Illumina NextSeq. A bioinformatics analysis revealed that the taxonomic composition was significantly different between substrates and sites, with substrate being the primary determining factor. Regardless of site, the steel biofilms had a higher abundance of genes related to biofilm formation, and sulfur, iron, and nitrogen cycling, while the wood biofilms showed a higher abundance of manganese cycling and methanol oxidation genes. This study demonstrates how substrate composition shapes biofilm microbiomes and suggests that marine biofilms may contribute to nutrient cycling at depth. Objective: We analyzed a fishery‐independent catch time series in the context of predicted historical age structure of Red Drum Sciaenops ocellatus for the years 1980–2019. This time series roughly coincided with closure of the commercial fishery in Texas (in 1981) and federal waters (in 1987). Changes in size and age were used to estimate changes in mortality and offshore escapement. Methods: Otoliths collected from Red Drum between 1997 and 2015 in Texas were used to create seasonal length‐at‐age growth functions, which were then used to estimate ages (based on total length) of all Red Drum encountered in fishery‐independent gill‐net samples collected by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department during 1980–2019 (total n = 311,150). Temporal changes in observed body size and overall catch were used to predict annualized changes in mean age, mortality, and offshore escapement of the estuarine population. Result: The initial 14‐year period (1980–1993) was characterized by rapid increases in mean catch per hour and mean total length (mm) in fishery‐independent samples, followed by relative stability for the remainder of the time series. There was a 55% increase in estimated mean age of Red Drum when comparing 1980 (mean age = 0.84 year) to 2019 (1.30 years). There were also rapid and significant declines in total mortality (Z; estimated via catch curves) and increases in offshore escapement (estimated indirectly from mortality) in the initial recovery period. Conclusion: The current estuarine population of Red Drum in Texas is significantly larger and older than it was at the onset of fishery management measures, and offshore escapement is annually well above the current target level of 30% set by the federal fisheries management plan. These findings suggest that regulations put into effect starting in the 1980s have succeeded in recovering the estuarine Red Drum population in Texas. Grazing pressure is increasing in the northern Gulf of Mexico due to tropicalization (i.e. range expansion of tropical species) and conservation efforts. Populations of herbivorous parrotfish, green turtles and manatees are all increasing in this region, and overgrazing can lead to loss of foundation species and their associated ecosystem services.With environmental conditions changing rapidly and seagrass abundance declining in many regions globally, understanding mechanisms that promote seagrass resilience to stressors (e.g. grazing) will be crucial for managing and restoring seagrass meadows and the valuable ecosystem services they provide. Diverse communities often exhibit higher resilience due to positive interactions and increased response diversity (i.e. differing reactions to environmental change), indicating that diversity may provide a tool for enhancing seagrass resilience.To investigate how macrophyte species richness influences resilience to increased grazing pressure, we simulated green turtle grazing events every 2 weeks for 8 weeks in plots that naturally varied in species richness. We recorded macrophyte metrics between the simulated grazing events and after a longer 4‐week recovery period.Both species identity and species richness impacted response to simulated herbivory. Four weeks after the last simulated grazing event, plots with higher species richness had recovered macrophyte shoot density better than plots with lower species richness, indicating that species richness may increase resilience. The grazing events had the strongest negative impact on the persistent species (i.e. longer‐lived species with slower shoot turnover), Thalassia testudinum, reducing T. testudinum density and dominance and indicating that areas dominated by this species may be the most negatively impacted by increased grazing pressure.Synthesis: Our results showed a positive impact of species richness on resilience and indicated that persistent seagrass species may have reduced dominance following repeated disturbances. Diverse seagrass beds can, therefore, improve ecosystem stability by allowing opportunistic species to replace species that are most negatively impacted by disturbances. Sampling in multiple localities, coupled with molecular barcoding, has shown that nominal species with wide geographical distribution often harbour local cryptic species in allopatry. Cryptic species in sympatry, however, can be easily missed if they have different seasonality, because they can be identified only through long-term frequent sampling (i.e. sampling through time of the same species in the same location). This is especially true in planktonic invertebrates that exhibit strong seasonality. By integrating mitochondrial 16S sequences of eight species of Hydrozoa (Cnidaria) collected weekly for a year in one Gulf of Mexico region, with sequences gathered globally, we investigate the presence of cryptic species within a temporal gradient (regionally) and on a spatial (worldwide) scale. We find that eight species of Hydrozoa are composed of 28 cryptic species, with 16 of them appearing in sympatry but with non-overlapping seasonality. The high number of sympatric cryptic species could only be discovered through extensive and prolonged regional sampling efforts. The bi-dimensional cryptic diversity (in time and space) highlighted in this study is essential for understanding processes of evolution, biogeography dispersal in the sea, and for more realistic biodiversity assessments. Globally, six of the seven sea turtle species are threatened or endangered and as such, monitoring reproductive activity for these species is necessary for effective population recovery. Remote beaches provide a challenge to conducting these surveys, which often results in data gaps that can hamper management planning. Throughout the summer of 2022, aerial surveys were conducted over the Chandeleur Islands in the Gulf of Mexico. Turtle crawls were photographed for subsequent review by 10 expert observers. Whenever possible, ground surveys were conducted, and samples of unhatched eggs or dead hatchlings were collected. A summary of historic reports of sea turtle nesting activity at this site was also compiled. On 11 days between May 4, 2022, and July 30, 2022, photographs of 55 potential sea turtle crawls were taken. Observers identified 54 of those as being made by a sea turtle. There was high‐to‐moderate certainty that 16 of those crawls were nests, that 14 were made by loggerheads, and that two were made by Kemp's ridleys. Observers were least certain of species identification when surveys were conducted during rainy weather. Genetic analyses based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA were conducted on samples from five nests and those analyses confirmed that three nests were laid by Kemp's ridleys and two were laid by loggerheads. Historic records from the Chandeleur Islands substantiate claims that the Chandeleurs have supported sea turtle nesting activity for decades; however, the consistency of this activity remains unknown. Our aerial surveys, particularly when coupled with imaging, were a useful tool for documenting nesting activity on these remote islands. Future monitoring programs at this site could benefit from a standardized aerial survey program with a seaplane so trends in nesting activity could be determined particularly as the beach undergoes restoration. The herpetofauna of the insular systems of Mexico is composed of 226 species, of which 14 are anurans, two are salamanders, and 210 are reptiles, comprised of two crocodilians, 195 squamates, and 13 turtles. Although the surface of the Mexican islands is only 0.26% of the Mexican territorial extension, these 226 species constitute 16.1% of Mexico's documented herpetofauna of 1405 species. We classified the Mexican islands into five physiographic regions: the islands of Pacific Baja California; the islands of the Gulf of California; the islands of the Tropical Pacific; the islands of the Gulf of Mexico; and the islands of the Mexican Caribbean. The highest species richness among these regions is in the Gulf of California, with 108 species, and the lowest richness is 40 for the islands of the Pacific Baja California and 46 for those of the Gulf of Mexico. We identified introduced species, risk of wildfires, climate change, and urban/tourist development as the main environmental threats impinging on these species. In addition, we assessed the conservation status of the native species by comparing the SEMARNAT (NOM-059), IUCN Red List, and the Environmental Vulnerability Score (EVS) systems. The comparison of these systems showed that the NOM-059 and the IUCN systems seriously underestimate the degree of threat for insular endemics, being particularly concerning for those insular species that are known only from their respective type localities. The EVS system proved to be practical and indicated that 94 species have a high vulnerability status, 62 a medium status, and 56 a low status. The Relative Herpetofaunal Priority system, which contrasts the number of endemic and threatened species among different physiographic areas, indicates that the regions with the highest priority are the Islands of the Gulf of California, followed by the islands of the Tropical Pacific. Finally, we discussed the completeness of the Mexican Natural Protected Areas on the insular systems of the country; the result is outstanding since Mexico is already close to achieving the goal of having all their islands under some degree of federal protection. Objective: Since 2010, three spatially disjunct reef fish video surveys have provided fishery‐independent data critical to the assessment and management of reef fishes in the Gulf of Mexico. Although analytical approaches have recently been developed to integrate data from these surveys into a single measure of relative abundance and size composition, a more parsimonious approach would be to integrate survey efforts under a single Gulf‐wide survey design. Accordingly, we conducted a retrospective analysis of historical video‐ and habitat‐mapping data to develop a novel stratified random sampling design for conducting surveys of natural and artificial reef habitats. Methods: We conducted a series of classification and regression tree analyses to delineate both spatial and habitat strata, and conducted simulations to assess the performance of an optimized survey design. Result: Spatially, classification and regression tree results identified three depth strata (10–25 m, >25–50 m, >50–180 m) and three regional strata (north‐central Gulf, Big Bend, southwest Florida) in the eastern Gulf. For both natural and artificial reefs, habitat strata were delineated based on a combination of relative relief (low, medium, high) and size of the individual reef feature, although reef scale differed markedly between natural (<100 m2, 100–1000 m2, >1000 m2) and artificial habitats (<25 m2, 25–100 m2, >100 m2). To optimize effort among sampling strata, effort was allocated proportionally based on a combination of habitat availability and managed‐species richness for each stratum. Simulation results indicated that relative median biases were <10% and relative median absolute deviations <30% on estimates of abundance for most species examined on natural reefs under the optimal design, except Greater Amberjack Seriola dumerili. These measures of bias and imprecision were similar or higher for most species simulated using simple random and stratified random survey designs. Estimated relative median bias and relative median absolute deviations were notably higher for artificial reef surveys. Conclusion: Based on these results, survey efforts were integrated as the Gulf Fishery Independent Survey of Habitat and Ecosystem Resources (G‐FISHER) in 2020. Passive acoustic monitoring is a method that is commonly used to collect long-term data on soniferous animal presence and abundance. However, these large datasets require substantial effort for manual analysis; therefore, automatic methods are a more effective way to conduct these analyses and extract points of interest. In this study, an energy detector and subsequent pre-trained neural network were used to detect and classify six fish call types from a long-term dataset collected in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The development of this two-step methodology and its performance are the focus of this paper. The energy detector by itself had a high recall rate (>84%), but very low precision; however, a subsequent neural network was used to classify detected signals and remove noise from the detections. Image augmentation and iterative training were used to optimize classification and compensate for the low number of training images for two call types. The classifier had a relatively high average overall accuracy (>87%), but classifier average recall and precision varied greatly for each fish call type (recall: 39–91%; precision: 26–94%). The Environmental Studies Program (ESP) at the United States Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is funded by the United States Congress to support BOEM's mission, which is to use the best available science to responsibly manage the development of the Nation's offshore energy and mineral resources. Since its inception in 1973, the ESP has funded over $1 billion of multidisciplinary research across four main regions of the United States Outer Continental Shelf: Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic, Alaska, and Pacific. Understanding the dynamics of oil spills and their potential effects on the environment has been one of the primary goals of BOEM's funding efforts. To this end, BOEM's ESP continues to support research that improves oil spill modeling by advancing our understanding and the application of meteorological and oceanographic processes to improve oil spill modeling. Following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, BOEM has invested approximately $28 million on relevant projects resulting in 73 peer-reviewed journal articles and 42 technical reports. This study describes the findings of these projects, along with the lessons learned and research information needs identified. Ophiothrix angulata (Say, 1825) is one of the most common and well-known ophiuroids in the Western Atlantic, with a wide geographic and bathymetric range. The taxonomy of this species has been controversial for a century because of its high morphological variability. Here we integrate information fromDNAsequence data, color patterns, and geometric morphometrics to assess species delimitation and geographic differentiation in O. angulata. We found three deeply divergent mtDNA-COI clades (K2P 17.0- 27.9%). ITS2 nuclear gene and geometric morphometrics of dorsal and ventral arm plates differentiate one of these lineages, as do integrative species delineation analyses, making this a confirmed candidate species. To better understand the pollution potential of metals in estuaries heavily concentrated with petrochemical industries, we measured concentrations of total recoverable metals in the lower Calcasieu River in southwestern Louisiana that flows into the northern Gulf of Mexico. Water samples were collected at six sites along the last 88 km reach of the river monthly between May 2013 and November 2015, during which salinity ranged from 0.02 to 29.5 ppt from upstream to downstream. The samples were analyzed for a series of total recoverable metals, including aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), boron (B), cadmium (Cd), calcium (Ca), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lithium (Li), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), silicon (Si), titanium (Ti), vanadium (V), and zinc (Zn), of which only Al, As, B, Ca, Fe, Li, Mg, Mn, Si, Ti, and Zn had a detection rate higher than 30% over the 31-month study period. In the freshwater portion of the river, Si, Ca, Al, Fe, and Mg showed the highest concentration (8, 5, 4, 2, and 2 mg/L, respectively), while Li, As, Zn, Ti, and B had the lowest concentration (6, 16, 27, 34 and 50 µg/L, respectively). The concentrations of Al and Si declined by more than 30% from the freshwater to the river mouth, but the concentrations of Li and B increased by 61 and 66 times, respectively. None of these metals' concentrations were found to exceed US EPA standards, but the rapid increase in Li and B concentrations may indicate a potential anthropogenic influence. On average, the Calcasieu River discharged a total of 35,484 tons of the elements each year (or 8059 kg/km2/yr), of which Si, Al, Ca, Fe, and Mg contributed 98%. Three major components of factors were extracted explaining 34, 20, and 13% (cumulative 67%) of the total variation in the metal concentrations. Salinity and pH were the major (>0.3) parameters in component 1 explaining the variability of B and Li; TSS was the major (>0.3) parameter in component 2 explaining the variation of Al, Fe, and Ti concentration; and temperature and DO% were the major (>0.3) parameters in component 3 explaining the variation of Mn concentration. Further studies on riverbed sediment metals and their effect on metal concentrations in surface water can help understand the metal sources and their potential effects on coastal aquatic ecosystems. Winter storms occur in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) every few years, but there are not many studies on oceanic responses to severe winter storms. Although usually considered less destructive than hurricanes, they can result in cumulative damages. Winter Storm Outbreak of February 2021 (WSO21), the most intense winter storm to impact Texas and the GoM in 30 years, passed over the western GoM and brought severe cold to the GoM coastal regions, which caused a sudden cooling of the ocean surface, resulting in an extensive loss of marine life. In this study, we analyze multiple datasets from both in situ and satellite observations to examine the oceanic changes due to WSO21 in order to improve our understanding of oceanic responses to winter storms. Although the pre-storm sea surface temperature (SST) was 1–2 °C warmer than normal, severe coastal cold spells caused a significant cooling of the order of −3 °C to −5 °C during WSO21 and a −1 °C average cooling in the mixed layer (ML) over the western GoM. Net surface heat loss played a primary role in the upper ocean cooling during WSO21 and explained more than 50% of the cooling that occurred. Convective mixing due to surface cooling and turbulent mixing induced by enhanced wind speeds significantly increase the surface ML in the western GoM. Apart from rapid changes in SST and heat fluxes due to air-sea interactions, persistent upwelling brings nutrients to the surface and can produce coastal "winter" blooms along the Texas and Mexico coast. Prominent salinity increases along the coastal regions during and after WSO21 were another indicator of wind-induced coastal upwelling. Sponges are recognized as a diverse and abundant component of mesophotic and deep-sea ecosystems worldwide. In Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary region within the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, sponges thrive among diverse biological and geological habitats between 16–200+ m deep (i.e., coral reefs and communities, algal nodules, and coralline algae reefs, mesophotic reefs, patch reefs, scarps, ridges, soft substrate, and rocky outcrops). A synoptic guide is presented, developed by studying common sponge species in the region, through direct sampling and in-situ photographic records. A total of 64 species is included: 60 are Demospongiae (14 orders), two are Hexactinellida (one order), and two are Homoscleromorpha (one order). Thirty-four taxa are identified to species and 13 were identified to have affinity with, but were not identical to, a known species. Fifteen taxa could only be identified to genus level, and the species remain as uncertain (incerta sedis), with the potential to represent new species or variants of known species. One specimen received only a family assignation. This study extends geographic or mesophotic occurrence data for eleven known species and includes several potentially new species. This work improves our knowledge of Gulf of Mexico sponge biodiversity and highlights the importance of the region for scientists and resource managers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By harnessing both hypothetical, synthetic basin and gas hydrate (GH) system models and real‐world models of well‐studied salt diapir‐associated GH sites at Green Canyon (Gulf of Mexico) and Blake Ridge (U.S. Atlantic coast), we propose and demonstrate salt movement (and in particular, diapirism) to be a new mechanism for the recycling of marine GH. At Green Canyon, for example, we show that by considering this newly proposed diapir‐driven recycling mechanism in conjunction with previously proposed lithological control on sandy‐reservoir‐hosted hydrate at the base of the GH stability zone (BGHSZ; ∼bottom‐simulating reflector, BSR), modeled GH saturations match drilling data. Overall, salt diapir movement‐induced GH recycling provides a temperature‐driven mechanism by which GH saturations at the BGHSZ may reach >90 vol. % and by which GH volumes near and free gas volumes beneath the BGHSZ may be increased significantly through time. Interestingly, comparison of salt diapir‐driven recycling and sediment burial‐driven recycling scenarios suggests notably higher rates of recycling via diapir‐driven versus burial‐driven processes. Our results suggest that GH and associated free gas accumulations above salt diapir crests represent particularly attractive targets for unconventional and conventional hydrocarbon resource exploration and for scientific and academic drilling expeditions aimed at exploiting GH systems. Salt basins containing GH systems—including passive margin basins of the Gulf of Mexico, southeastern Brazil, and southwestern Africa—are therefore compelling localities for studying salt‐driven GH recycling and for salt diapir‐associated natural gas exploration. Hydrate deposits contain vast amounts of carbon, mostly in the form of entrapped methane, and are therefore critical components of the global carbon cycle. High‐saturation GH accumulations are attractive as potentially extractable energy resources, and the processes resulting in concentrated hydrate deposits are therefore of particular scientific and economic interest. Here, we explore GH recycling, a process by which hydrates pushed below their pressure‐ and temperature‐defined stability zone destabilizes and releases buoyant gas that may be reincorporated into the upward‐shifted zone of hydrate stability, leading to increasingly elevated hydrate saturations. Using computational basin modeling and two‐dimensional forward modeling of both theoretical and real‐world GH systems, we present a new mechanism for GH recycling: the ascent of salt diapirs. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is responsible for managing the development of US Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) energy and mineral resources. Because oil spills may occur from offshore oil and gas activities, BOEM conducts oil spill risk analysis (OSRA) prior to oil and gas lease sales. Since the 1970s, BOEM has developed and applied the OSRA model to evaluate the risk of potential oil spills to environmental resources. This paper summarizes some of the OSRA model progress and applications in the past decade: (1) calculation of the risk of catastrophic oil spills (with a volume over one million barrels), which concludes that the return period of a catastrophic oil spill in OCS areas is estimated to be 165 years; (2) a more efficient way to estimate the probability of oil spill contact to environmental resources in the Gulf of Mexico; (3) weathering calculations in OSRA, which enhances the accuracy of the OSRA model results; and (4) application of OSRA to the Ixtoc I oil spill as an example of how the OSRA model simulates large oil spills for oil spill preparedness and response. This paper explores some key challenges the Mexican government may face when implementing climate change adaptation initiatives in coastal lagoon communities in the Mexican state of Tabasco, in the Gulf of Mexico. I discuss some challenges state initiatives of this type may encounter considering the existence of local contentious political issues among various actors - fishers and the state-owned oil industry - that are at the core of the emergence of coastal environmental changes in the study site. A close analysis of local political, economic and environmental processes in coastal lagoon communities illustrates the existence of contentious issues among powerful actors over territory and its resources. It is in the context of these local, on the ground, issues that I argue that climate change adaptation interventions become highly political. I also argue that climate change policy analysis must be done in light of past and failed state interventions in Tabasco that have had a negative impact on ecosystems and fishers' livelihoods. My analysis of climate change adaptation initiatives and fishers' views on their local environmental problems is based on political ecology approaches to environmental narratives and critical literature on climate change. The Satellite Coastal and Oceanic Atmospheric Pollution Experiment (SCOAPE) cruise in the Gulf of Mexico was conducted in May 2019 by NASA and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to determine the feasibility of using satellite data to measure air quality in a region of concentrated oil and natural gas (ONG) operations. SCOAPE addressed both technological and scientific issues related to measuring NO2 columns over the outer continental shelf. Featured were nitrogen dioxide (NO2) instruments (Pandora, Teledyne API analyzer) at Cocodrie, LA (29.26°, −90.66°), and on the Research Vessel Point Sur operating off the Louisiana coast with measurements of ozone, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The findings: (a) all NO2 observations revealed two atmospheric regimes over the Gulf, the first influenced by tropical air in 10–14 May, the second influenced by flow from urban areas on 15–17 May; (b) comparisons of OMI v4 and TROPOMI v1.3 TC (total column) NO2 data with shipboard Pandora NO2 column observations averaged 13% agreement with the largest difference during 15–17 May (∼20%). At Cocodrie, the satellite–Pandora agreement was ∼5%. (c) Three new‐model Pandora instruments displayed a TC NO2 precision of 0.01 Dobson Units (∼5%); (d) regions of smaller, older natural gas operations showed high methane readings from leakage; elevated VOCs were also detected. Neither satellite nor spectrometer captured the magnitude of ambient NO2 variability near ONG platforms. Given an absence of regular air quality monitoring over the Gulf of Mexico, SCOAPE data constitute a baseline against which future observations can be compared. This was confirmed by Pandora spectrometer "ground truth" TC NO2 data measured throughout SCOAPE on shore and on ship. Third, SCOAPE established the reliability and precision of a new generation of Pandora spectrometers. Fourth, comparisons of satellite and Pandora TC NO2 data in SCOAPE confirm previous land–water interface studies that point to limitations in satellite NO2 in coastal regions. Finally, neither satellite nor spectrometer captures the magnitude of ambient ("nose‐level") NO2 variability in a region dotted with hundreds of ONG platforms. Pollutant emissions into the atmosphere derived from port activities can be transported to surrounding regions and cities depending on wind speed and direction, having an impact on air quality. In this research, emissions of atmospheric pollutants (NOx, CO, NMHCs, CO2, SO2, TSP, PM2.5 and PM10) were estimated for: tanks, container, roll-on/roll-off (RO-RO), bulk carriers and general cargo ships, using emission factors in the hoteling and maneuvering stage in the port area of Veracruz, Mexico, during 2019 and 2020 despite the suspension period of activities due to the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic. Among the total estimated emissions, CO2 presented the highest values for 2019 (31,177 kg/year) and 2020 (29,003 kg/year), whereas CH4 presented the lowest values with 0.294 kg/year for 2019 and 0.273 kg/year for 2020. The highest estimated emissions for CO2, NOx and SO2 occurred in the maneuvering stage in 2019 for bulk carriers, tanks and container ships. Likewise, the highest estimated emissions were during the hoteling stage of the container ships in 2020. This study will provide an updated ship emissions inventory for the Gulf of Mexico region where the Port of Veracruz is located. In addition, SO2 and PM2.5 measurements were performed from October 2019 to December 2020. PM2.5 concentrations exceeded the Mexican Ambient Air Quality Standard (MAAQS) value of 45 µg m−3 for the 24-h average concentration several times, on the opposite, SO2 exhibited concentrations up to 20 times lower than the 24-h MAAQS value of 40 ppb. Results showed that pollutant emissions in the port of Veracruz exhibited a seasonal variability, modifying their dispersion and the possible effects. Our main conclusion is that current port area is the major source of pollutant emissions (SO2 and PM2.5) throughout the year, whereas the expansion area of the port of Veracruz does not represent still a significant rise of pollutant emissions, but it is expected that the growth of port activity will directly increase the concentrations of pollutants emitted. In line with Mexico's interest in determining its wind resources, in this paper, 141 locations along the states of the Gulf of Mexico have been analyzed by calculating the main wind characteristics, such as the Weibull shape (c) and scale (k) parameters, and wind power density (WPD), by using re-analysis MERRA-2 (Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications version 2) data with hourly records from 1980–2017 at a 50-m height. The analysis has been carried out using the R free software, whose its principal function is for statistical computing and graphics, to characterize the wind speed and determine its annual and seasonal (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) behavior for each state. As a result, the analysis determined two different wind seasons along the Gulf of Mexico;, it was found that in the states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Tabasco wind season took place during autumn, winter, and spring, while for the states of Campeche and Yucatan, the only two states that shared its coast with the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, the wind season occurred only in winter and spring. In addition, it was found that by considering a seasonal analysis, more accurate information on wind characteristics could be generated; thus, by applying the Weibull distribution function, optimal zones for determining wind as a resource of energy can be established. Furthermore, a k-means algorithm was applied to the wind data, obtaining three clusters that can be seen by month; these results and using the Weibull parameter c allow for selecting the optimum wind turbine based on its power coefficient or efficiency. In September and November 2016, eight marine sampling sites along the coast of the southeastern Gulf of Mexico were monitored for the presence of lipophilic and hydrophilic toxins. Water temperature, salinity, hydrogen potential, dissolved oxygen saturation, inorganic nutrients and phytoplankton abundance were also determined. Two samples filtered through glass fiber filters were used for the extraction and analysis of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) by lateral flow immunochromatography (IFL), HPLC with post-column oxidation and fluorescent detection (FLD) and UHPLC coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). Elevated nutrient contents were associated with the sites of rainwater discharge or those near anthropogenic activities. A predominance of the dinoflagellate Pyrodinium bahamense was found with abundances of up to 104 cells L−1. Identification of the dinoflagellate was corroborated by light and scanning electron microscopy. Samples for toxins were positive by IFL, and the analogs NeoSTX and STX were identified and quantified by HPLC-FLD and UHPLC-MS/MS, with a total PST concentration of 6.5 pg cell−1. This study is the first report that confirms the presence of PSTs in P. bahamense in Mexican waters of the Gulf of Mexico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tidal datums are key components in NOAA's Vertical Datum transformation project (VDatum), which enables effective vertical transformation of the water level between tidal, orthometric, and ellipsoid -based three-dimensional reference systems. An initial application of modeling tidal datums was developed for the coastal waters of Texas and western Louisiana in 2013. The goals of the current work include: (1) updating the tidal model by using the best available shoreline, bathymetry, and tide station data; (2) implementing a recently developed statistical interpolation method for interpolating modeled tidal datums and computing tidal datum uncertainties; and (3) using modeled tidal datums to upgrade non-tidal polygons for enhancing the quality of the VDatum marine grid population. The updated tidal model outperformed the previous tidal model in most cases. The statistical interpolation method is able to limit the interpolated tidal datums to within a user-defined model error (0.01 m in this work) and produce a spatially varying uncertainty field for each interpolated tidal datum field. The upgraded non-tidal polygons enhanced the quality of the VDatum marine grid population. This paper will introduce the detailed procedures of this modeling work, present and discuss the obtained results, share the effective methods used for improving model performance and lessons learned in the model assessments, and analyze the improvement of the current tidal model in comparison with the previous tidal model. NOAA's National Ocean Service is upgrading three existing northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) operational nowcast/forecast systems (OFS) by integrating them into one single system (INGOFS) and developing additional domain coverage to encompass the lower Mississippi River, Lake Pontchartrain, Texas coastal embayments, and Mexican coastal waters. The system will produce real-time nowcast and short-range forecast guidance for water levels, 3-dimensional currents, water temperature, and salinity. INGOFS will be implemented using the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM). This paper describes the model configuration and results from a one-year (2 August 2016–1 August 2017) hindcast simulation. The model grid is composed of about 300,000 nodes and 600,000 elements, and has a spatial resolution ranging from 45 m near the coast to around 10 km on the open ocean boundary. It uses the FVCOM wetting and drying feature, the quadratic bottom friction scheme, and the two-equation model of the Mellor-Yamada Level 2.5 turbulence closure scheme. The hindcast results of water levels, surface temperatures, and salinity were verified by comparing the model time series with in situ observations. The root-mean-squared errors are about 0.08 m for water levels, about 1.1 °C for temperatures, and about 3.7 psu for salinity. The hindcast configuration will be further tested in a nowcast/forecast environment for a one-year period. The upgraded system is anticipated to be in operational production in mid-2020.
