Excavation is common in the construction of hydropower projects. Monitoring for both stable and unstable slopes is a pressing requirement during progressive excavations with or without cut-slope support measures. The present study is about an excavation carried out in a proposed concrete gravity dam site on the right bank slope of the Punatsangchhu River in western Bhutan. During the excavation, the right bank abutment witnessed multiple events of slope failures of various magnitudes. One major landslide occurred on 23 July 2013 in the toe of the right abutment, where foliation/multiple sheared/fractured zones/seams in quartz-feldspathic biotite gneiss dip towards the valley. During further excavations/piling works, a subsequent landslide on the downstream, within the body of the July 2013 landslide, occurred on 12 August 2016. As a result, a real-time monitoring of the slope became necessary to facilitate further excavations for achieving the dam foundation. Thus, the advanced slope monitoring instrument like Image By Interferometric Survey – Frequency Modulated (IBIS-FM) radar was deployed for monitoring the right bank slope during the excavation for the construction of ∼129 m high dam. The displacement of the hill slope is assessed based on this system by monitoring point locations as well as areas by assigning different threshold values for providing timely alerts. This real-time monitoring was effective in identifying the reactivation of August 2016 landslide that occurred on 22 January 2019. Thus, this study showcases the efficiency of IBIS-FM radar in monitoring slope instability with sub-millimeter accuracy on a near real-time basis.

A theoretical sea echo modeling of the floating-platform high-frequency hybrid sky-surface wave radar (HSSWR) is presented. The ionosphere is considered to be a no-tilt reflecting plane moving in the vertical direction. Subsequently, the first-order sea clutter cross section with consideration of the platform sway and yaw motion is derived. Simulations are conducted to explore the influences of the ionospheric movement and the platform oscillation motion on the sea clutter power spectrum. Simulation results indicate that the platform sway motion may induce additional peaks that distribute symmetrically concerning the Bragg peaks, while the platform yaw motion and the ionospheric movement may broaden even split the sea clutter. Experiments are conducted with the newly-developed HSSWR system, of which the receiving arrays are simultaneously deployed on a floating platform and the shoreside. Experimental measurements concerning the frequency shift, Doppler width, and the arrival angle of the E-layer/F-layer ionosphere reflected direct wave are compared and analyzed. The study demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed modeling and provides valuable guidelines for the sea clutter characteristics analysis and the data quality assessments of the floating-platform HSSWR.

Radar altimeters have so far had limited use in the coastal zone, the area with most societal impact. This is due to both lack of, or insufficient accuracy in the necessary corrections, and more complicated altimeter signals. This letter examines waveform data from the Envisat RA-2 as it passes regularly over Pianosa (a 10-km2 island in the northwestern Mediterranean). Forty-six repeat passes were analyzed, with most showing a reduction in signal upon passing over the island, with weak early returns corresponding to the reflections from land. Intriguingly, one third of cases showed an anomalously bright hyperbolic feature. This feature may be due to extremely calm waters in the Golfo della Botte (northern side of the island), but the cause of its intermittency is not clear. The modeling of waveforms in such a complex land/sea environment demonstrates the potential for sea surface height retrievals much closer to the coast than is achieved by routine processing. The long-term development of altimetric records in the coastal zone will not only improve the calibration of altimetric data with coastal tide gauges but also greatly enhance the study of storm surges and other coastal phenomena.

Snow water equivalent (SWE) can be measured using low-cost Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) sensors with one antenna placed below the snowpack and another one serving as a reference above the snow. The underlying GNSS signal-based algorithm for SWE determination for dry- and wet-snow conditions processes the carrier phases and signal strengths and additionally derives liquid water content (LWC) and snow depth (HS). So far, the algorithm was tested intensively for high-alpine conditions with distinct seasonal accumulation and ablation phases. In general, snow occurrence, snow amount, snow density and LWC can vary considerably with climatic conditions and elevation. Regarding alpine regions, lower elevations mean generally earlier and faster melting, more rain-on-snow events, and shallower snowpack. Therefore, we assessed the applicability of the GNSS-based SWE measurement at four stations along a steep elevation gradient (820, 1185, 1510 and 2540 m a.s.l.) in the eastern Swiss Alps during two winter seasons (2018–2020). Reference data of SWE, LWC and HS were collected manually and with additional automated sensors at all locations. The GNSS-derived SWE estimates agreed very well with manual reference measurements along the elevation gradient, and the accuracy (RMSE = 34 mm, RMSRE = 11 %) was similar under wet- and dry-snow conditions, although significant differences in snow density and meteorological conditions existed between the locations. The GNSS-derived SWE was more accurate than measured with other automated SWE sensors. However, with the current version of the GNSS algorithm, the determination of daily changes of SWE was found to be less suitable compared to manual measurements or pluviometer recordings and needs further refinement. The values of the GNSS-derived LWC were robust and within the precision of the manual and radar measurements. The additionally derived HS correlated well with the validation data. We conclude that SWE can reliably be determined using low-cost GNSS sensors under a broad range of climatic conditions, and LWC and HS are valuable add-ons.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) can transport birds and insects near their center of circulation. In this study, we examined the maximum altitude, area and density of the radar‐derived bioscatter signature across a set of 42 TC centers of circulation sampled from 2011 to 2020. All TC events contained at least one time when a bioscatter signature was present. More intense hurricanes with closed eyes typically had taller and denser bioscatter signatures, and sometimes larger areas dominated by bioscatter. This indicated a larger number of organisms within the circulation of more intense hurricanes, supporting the speculation that those storms were most likely to trap birds that do not want to risk flying through their eyewall thunderstorms. Larger and denser bioscatter signatures, indicating a larger number of birds, tend to occur when fall migration brings a large bird population to the Gulf and East Coasts where most storms were sampled. TC formation location was not related to bioscatter characteristics, but storms sampled in the Gulf of Mexico and Florida tended to have larger and denser bioscatter signatures.

Marine X-band radar has been suggested to be capable of monitoring significant wave heights in both offshore and open sea areas. In contrast to studies on offshore radar, significant wave height estimations from coastal radar images, which exhibit complicated radar backscattering features, have received little attention. This study proposes a method for retrieving the significant wave height from coastal areas that are often influenced by nononshore winds. The square root of the signal-to-noise ratio in radar images has been widely applied to estimate the significant wave height. However, nononshore wind cases show a poor correlation between the square root of the signal-to-noise ratio and the in situ significant wave height. In addition, the spectral shapes from radar images in nononshore wind cases are very different from those in onshore wind cases. To improve the significant wave height estimations from coastal radar images, we implement an artificial neural network algorithm. After training and testing the algorithm, we confirm that the estimated significant wave heights are more reliable for both onshore and nononshore wind cases if the square root of the signal-to-noise ratio, power from nearshore radar subimages, and in situ wind components are included in the input layer of the neural network.

Coherent microwave radar, which is a rapidly emerging tool to sense waves, usually utilizes the orbit velocities extracted from either temporal or spatial radar echoes. The distribution of energy in the wavenumber-frequency spectrum is changed by some nonlinear features, and correspondingly, this kind of method always provides a significantly overestimated wave period. To address this problem, a novel inversion algorithm, which utilizes the spatial and temporal returns collected with a recently developed coherent S-band radar, is proposed for retrieving wave parameters. A 2-D Fourier transform is applied to the spatial-temporal matrix of velocities to estimate the wavenumber-frequency spectrum. Then the wavenumber-frequency spectrum is integrated over the wavenumber domain to obtain the 1-D velocity spectrum. And the wave height spectrum is estimated from the 1-D velocity spectrum by the direct transform relationship between the 1-D velocity spectrum and the wave height spectrum. Later, significant wave heights and mean wave periods can be derived by the zeroth and first moments of the wave height spectra, respectively. The algorithm is validated using simulation and real data. An approximately four-day dataset collected with a shore-based coherent S-band radar deployed at Beishuang island during a typhoon period is reanalyzed and used to retrieve significant wave heights and mean wave periods. Comparisons between the measurements of radar and wave buoy are conducted, and radar-derived and buoy-measured wave parameters are in a reasonable agreement with a coherent coefficient over 0.9. The results indicate that the proposed method is effective for wave measurements using coherent S-band radar.

Multiple-elevation-beam synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a concept based on digital beamforming (DBF) in elevation and simultaneous recording of the echoes of multiple transmitted pulses. It enables high-resolution imaging of wide areas and is therefore ideal for the systematic observation of dynamic processes on the Earth's surface. Furthermore, if the pulse repetition interval (PRI) is continuously varied (staggered SAR), it is possible to map a wide continuous swath rather than multiple subswaths separated by ``blind'' ranges. Within the design of multiple-elevation-beam SAR, however, it is fundamental to consider how nadir echoes affect the mapping capabilities of systems with constant PRI and the image quality of staggered SAR systems, where nadir echoes are intrinsically smeared due to the PRI variation. This article addresses the characterization of nadir echoes in multiple-elevation-beam SAR with constant and variable PRI by presenting a parametric model for the nadir echo profile based on real radar measurements, a formulation of the nadir echo location and smearing in staggered SAR, and realistic simulations based on TerraSAR-X data, which show that nadir echo are likely to be barely visible in staggered SAR images. The results of this work are relevant to both the design of future SAR systems and the interpretation of the acquired data.

Snow is an important environmental variable and a primary water resource in many areas of the world. Monitoring seasonal snowpack properties is also crucial for properly managing snow-related hazards such as snow avalanches and snowmelt floods. Recently, an innovative radar architecture, based on the use of two receivers, has been proposed for snowpack monitoring for the case of dry snow, where the snowpack depth and bulk density can be calculated with one single radar measurement, without any kind of external aid. This article presents the extension of this innovative radar architecture for the case of wet snow. Internal decays in trees can rapidly escalate into a full decomposition of the inner structural layer, i.e., the “heartwood” layer, due to the action of aggressive diseases and fungal infections. This process leads to the formation of big cavities and hollows, which remain surrounded by the sapwood layer only. Estimating the thickness of the sapwood layer with a high degree of accuracy is therefore crucial for a correct assessment of the structural integrity of hollow trees, as well as an extremely challenging task. In this context, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has proven effective in providing details of the internal structure of trees. Nevertheless, the existing GPR processing methods still offer limited information on their internal configuration. This study investigates the effectiveness of GPR enhanced by a microwave tomography inversion approach in the assessment of hollow trees. To this aim, a living hollow tree was investigated by performing a set of pseudo-circular scans along the bark perimeter with a hand-held common-offset GPR system. The tree was then felled, and sections were cut for testing purposes. A dedicated data processing framework was developed and tested through numerical simulations of hollow tree sections. The internal structure of the real trunk was therefore reconstructed via a tomographic imaging approach and the outcomes were quantitatively analysed by way of comparison with the real sections’ main geometric features. The tomographic approach has proven very accurate in locating the sapwood-cavity interface as well as in the evaluation of the sapwood layer thickness, with a centimetre prediction accuracy.

Undesired echo from a flying object (aerial clutter) significantly contaminates the received signal of a wind profiler radar (WPR) because it has high intensity and spreads over a wide Doppler velocity range. In this study, results of aerial clutter mitigation obtained by applying adaptive clutter suppression (ACS) to a 1.3-GHz WPR are shown. The 1.3-GHz WPR used in this study has a main antenna comprising 13 antenna subarrays (MSAs). five-element Yagi-Uda antennas were also used as antenna subarrays for detecting clutters from low elevation angles (CSAs). The CSAs were used only in reception and installed so that they covered most of the horizontal directions and the horizontal and vertical polarizations. The directionally constrained minimization of power (DCMP) method was used as the adaptive signal processing to mitigate clutter. By the DCMP method, the weighted sum of the signals collected by 13 MSAs and 11 CSAs was computed so that the power of output signals was minimized under the constraint of constant gain in the antenna beam direction. Results of a case study for an aerial clutter from a low elevation angle at 17:04:37 on October 1 2020 showed that an overlap of the aerial clutter over a desired echo (i.e., clear-air echo) was solved by decreasing the aerial clutter whose peak intensity was ~24 dB greater than that of the clear-air echo. In a case study at 09:30:27 on September 18 2020, effects of the DCMP method on the processed results were discussed.

Buried craters within tens of meters of lunar regolith are rarely studied but are significant for understanding the evolution of surface processes on the Moon. Here, we first report the evidence of an intact buried crater within the layered strata at Chang'E-4 (CE-4) landing site revealed by the lunar penetrating radar (LPR). The time-frequency comparative analysis method based on the variational mode decomposition (VMD) and the rock quantitative analysis method based on the local unit correlation (LUC) are proposed and applied to the processing and analysis of LPR data within 15 lunar days. The results presented by the two methods provide evidence of a buried crater at the CE-4 landing site and simultaneously reveal the rock-concentrated structure within the buried crater. According to the results, it is considered that the filling materials within the buried crater have survived the impaction and gardening during the formation of the overlying fine-grained regolith. Recent works have proposed that the near-surface material at the CE-4 landing site is mainly the lunar mantle materials excavated from the nearby Finsen crater. Therefore, the buried crater probably preserves the initial lunar mantle materials.

For radar modeling and simulation of sea clutter, there are a number of key characteristics used to describe the observed features. These include the mean backscatter power, amplitude statistics, spatial and long-time temporal correlation, and the Doppler spectrum. Regarding the latter, a common modeling approach is to use the mean Doppler characteristics (width and center point) to relate to the sea conditions. However, this does not capture the time- and range-varying fluctuations of the Doppler spectra, which are important for assessing the behavior of coherent detection schemes. The evolving Doppler spectrum model offers a way to model these variations and can be described with a moderate number of parameters. Relating these to the observed geometry, environment and radar characteristics are important to make the models accessible. Previous work has characterized X-band radar sea clutter over a range of sea conditions and azimuth and grazing angles. In this article, new models are presented that capture variations with both the radar resolved area and integration time. This enables the evolved Doppler spectra model to be used over a much wider range of applications.

Oils floating on the sea surface can be observed as ``dark'' patches on radar images since the backscattered signals from the contaminated area are reduced in two dominant ways. First, oil slicks could damp short gravity and capillary waves on the sea surface responsible for backscattering energy. Second, the oil-covered sea surface permittivity decreases significantly if the oil film is sufficiently thick or mixed with seawater, i.e., oil emulsion. In this article, the geometry of the oil-covered sea surface is accounted for by the damping of sea waves, which is described by the model of local balance (MLB) combined with the sea wave spectrum. The radar backscattering is predicted by the advanced integral equation method (AIEM) model. The reflection coefficients are calculated based on a layered-medium model to analyze the impact of oil thickness and emulsions on the radar scattering. Numerical simulations demonstrate that: 1) the sensitivity to oil thickness and water content of the oil spills increases when the radar frequency increases; 2) the backscattering signals exhibit a nonlinear behavior with respect to oil thickness; and 3) high wind speed can generally narrow the difference between the radar backscattering from the clean and oil-covered sea surface, while the incidence angle has little effect. Numerical simulations are then compared with the multifrequency synthetic aperture radar observations acquired during the Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill accident and the 2011 Norwegian Clean Seas Association for Operating Companies (NOFO) oil-on-water exercise. Comparison results show that it is possible to estimate the oil thickness at reasonably good accuracy.

The accumulation rate is a key parameter in computing the mass balance of glaciers and ice sheets to estimate sea level rise. A shallow-layers-detection ice sounding radar (SLDISR) is developed to measure the accumulation rate and shape of near-surface internal layers with high resolution. With a transmitting frequency from 500 to 2000 MHz, this frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar provides a range resolution of about 16 cm in free space by using a Hanning window and a penetrating depth about 150 m under polar ice. The spectral analysis and coherent integration techniques are used to obtain a high processing gain and to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the system. A phase-locked loop with wideband yttrium iron garnet (YIG) oscillator is applied to generate a sweeping chirp signal as an input source for the transmitter. A stable, low-frequency reference chirp signal is generated with a direct digital synthesizer (DDS) integrated in field-programmable gate array (FPGA). To reduce the high-speed requirement to the analog-to-digital converter (ADC), dechirp technology is adopted at the RF section of the receiver. The implementation of the digital unit is based on an FPGA chip. The designed radar has been successfully deployed in Antarctica during the 31st Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition (CHINARE 31) and CHINARE 33, mainly over the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS). The echograms indicate the effectiveness of the radar system on detecting clear internal reflecting horizons (IRHs) over ice sheets.

In this paper, a scheme of dual-Doppler radar wind analysis based on a three-dimensional variational method is proposed and performed in two steps. First, the horizontal wind field is simultaneously recovered through minimizing a cost function defined as a radial observation term with the standard conjugate gradient method, avoiding a weighting parameter specification step. Compared with conventional dual-Doppler wind synthesis approaches, this variational method minimizes errors caused by interpolation from radar observation to analysis grid in the iterative solution process, which is one of the main sources of errors. Then, through the accelerated Liebmann method, the vertical velocity is further re-estimated as an extra step by solving the Poisson equation with impermeable conditions imposed at the ground and near the tropopause. The Poisson equation defined by the second derivative of the vertical velocity is derived from the mass continuity equation. Compared with the method proposed by O'Brien, this method is less sensitive to the uncertainty of the boundary conditions and has better stability and reliability. Furthermore, the method proposed in this paper is applied to Doppler radar observation of a squall line process. It is shown that the retrieved vertical wind profile agrees well with the vertical profile obtained with the velocity–azimuth display (VAD) method, and the retrieved radial velocity as well as the analyzed positive and negative velocity centers and horizontal wind shear of the squall line are in accord with radar observations. There is a good correspondence between the divergence field of the derived wind field and the vertical velocity. And, the horizontal and vertical circulations within and around the squall line, as well as strong updrafts, the associated downdrafts, and associated rear inflow of the bow echo, are analyzed well. It is worth mentioning that the variational method in this paper can be applied to simultaneously synthesize the three-dimensional wind field from multiple-Doppler radar observations.

Lava tubes are buried channels that transport thermally insulated lava. Nowadays, lava tubes on the Moon are believed to be empty and thus indicated as potential habitats for humankind. In recent years, several studies investigated possible lava tube locations, considering the gravity anomaly distribution and surficial volcanic features. This article proposes a novel and unsupervised method to map candidate buried empty lava tubes in radar sounder data (radargrams) and extract their physical properties. The approach relies on a model that describes the geometrical and electromagnetic (EM) properties of lava tubes in radargrams. According to this model, reflections in radargrams are automatically detected and analyzed with a fuzzy system to identify those associated with lava tube boundaries and reject the others. The fuzzy rules consider the EM and geometrical properties of lava tubes, and thus, their appearance in radargrams. The proposed method can address the complex task of identifying candidate lava tubes on a large number of radargrams in an automatic, fast, and objective way. The final decision on candidate lava tubes should be taken in postprocessing by expert planetologists. The proposed method is tested on both a real and a simulated data set of radargrams acquired on the Moon by the Lunar Radar Sounder (LRS). Identified candidate lava tubes are processed to extract geometrical parameters, such as the depth and the thickness of the crust (roof).

The sea clutter, referred to as the time-varying radar backscatter from the ocean surface, plays a significant role in marine radar development. The ocean's complex hydrodynamics cause it to exhibit non-Gaussian and nonstationary characteristics, which brings challenges in the sea clutter modeling, especially for establishing its spatial-temporal correlated and coherent model. In this article, a data-driven method based on the Koopman mode decomposition (KMD) is proposed for modeling spatial-temporal correlated complex sea clutter. The method decomposes the coherent sea clutter dynamic behavior in terms of Koopman modes and corresponding temporal patterns. Then, these spatiotemporal patterns are used to construct the sea clutter state over time according to the approximate solution. Furthermore, this proposed state-of-the-art data-driven approach is benchmarked by the measured sea clutter data from intelligent PIXel processing radar (IPIX). It is demonstrated that the proposed approach accurately models the complex sea clutter with actual statistic characteristics, phase information, and spatial-temporal correlations. The mean absolute error (MAE) and root mean square error (RMSE) between the obtained and actual sea clutter are only 0.1817 and 0.2349, respectively. This work offers a practical approach for modeling sea clutter, especially when the spatial-temporal correlation and coherence information is needed.

Buried ice in the Martian mid-latitudes is of high interest for In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) by future crewed missions, as well as for its scientific value as a record of climate history on another planet. ``Lobate debris aprons,'' widely considered to be debris-covered glaciers, constitute a large reservoir of such ice. Many have been probed by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's Shallow Radar (SHARAD) sounder, which imaged their base and constrained their internal composition to >80% water ice. The basal contact is not imaged by SHARAD for all aprons, however, which introduces the possibility that these features contain significantly less ice. In this study, we used SHARAD survey results in tandem with high-resolution digital terrain models to show that these ``non-detections'' can be attributed to surface roughness, which through scattering reduces the coherent signal that penetrates the aprons. We quantified this effect using a fractal backscattering model and found that the roughest surfaces coincided with the location of basal non-detections. There is thus no need for reduced ice content to explain nondetection of lobate debris apron bases with SHARAD. This result leads us to interpret all lobate debris aprons as likely debris-covered glaciers, due to the similarities in their gross morphology and surface textures to aprons with basal detections.

Research based on Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding (MARSIS) data detected unusual radar bright basal reflections located at about 1.5 km depth in a Mars region denoted as Ultimi Scopuli. These reflections were interpreted as a signature of subglacial liquid water even though this interpretation is still being debated in the literature. In this article, we propose a novel approach to the detection and imaging of candidate subglacial liquid water from radar sounding data. The approach combines the radar echo power traces with a suitable digital elevation model to provide a bidimensional representation of the surface. Even if the imaging method reconstructs a representation of the surface, we prove that it can be used to identify subsurface bright reflections in icy regions. Imaging is feasible even if the basal interface is not directly included in the processed data for image generation. To support this experimental evidence, we show that a relationship exists between the value of the reflected echo power originating from the englacial layers and the basal-to-surface-echo-power ratio. The observed relationship holds on both Ultimi Scopuli radar sounding data acquired on Mars and Lake Vostok data acquired on Earth. Our results show that the 2-D imaging provides an alternative way for locating candidate subglacial liquid water bodies on Mars over large areas also where the basal interface is not directly measured. The proposed approach complements previous research for further evaluation of the actual presence of liquid water on Mars.

During a flooding event, the ability of the terrain to dissipate water flow energy depends on its land-cover type and the associated surface roughness. In this study, we developed a new land-cover classification algorithm using repeat-pass polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data. Through a two-level hierarchical approach, we classified nine land-cover types with distinct surface roughness coefficients (Manning's n). We demonstrated the performance of this algorithm using available L-band ALOS PALSAR scenes acquired between April 2007 and April 2011 over the Houston area. The radar-based surface roughness estimates show a good agreement with those independently derived from NOAA's 22-class Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) 2010 land-cover classification data. Our algorithm is robust, and the randomly selected training sets only account for 0.3% of the total multilooked radar pixels (30-m spacing). Furthermore, we were able to accurately map surface roughness over the New Orleans area using available ALOS PALSAR scenes without selecting any new training sets. We note that NOAA's C-CAP data are currently used for estimating surface roughness in the operational storm-surge models, and a new version is typically released every five to six years. With the launch of the L-band NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) mission in the near future, our algorithm can be used to fill the temporal gaps of the existing C-CAP-based surface roughness database and improve the accuracy of near real-time hydrodynamic modeling.

A satellite mission onboard a radar sounder for the observation of the earth's polar regions can greatly support the monitoring of the cryosphere and climate change analyses. Several studies are in progress proposing the design and demonstrating the performance of such an earth-orbiting radar sounder (EORS). However, one critical aspect of the cryospheric targets that are often ignored and simplified in these studies is the complex geoelectrical nature of the polar ice. In this article, we present a performance assessment of the polar ice target detectability by focusing on their realistic representation. This is obtained by simulating the orbital radargrams corresponding to different regions of the polar cryosphere by leveraging the data available from airborne campaigns in Antarctica and Greenland. We propose novel performance metrics to analyze the detectability of the internal reflecting horizons (IRHs), the basal interface, and to analyze the nature of the basal interface. This performance assessment strategy can be applied to guide the design of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) budget at the surface, which can further support the selection of the main orbital instrument parameters, such as the transmitted power, the two-way antenna gain, and the processing gains.

Three upcoming Martian missions will deploy a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to reveal the fine-resolution subsurface structure and dielectric properties of materials beneath the surface. Numerical forward simulations of radar echo using a model of the near-surface structure at the landing site can provide a valuable reference for processing and interpretation of future radar data collected on Mars. In this study, based on the geological information of the Jezero crater, a detailed stratigraphic model of the near-surface structure is derived, which includes several key features, for example, the randomness of the medium, terrain, and cracks. To identify correctly the reflections of subsurface interfaces and fractures from the radar image, a v(z) f-k migration is carried out, the performance of which is evaluated using the GPR data obtained near Antarctic Zhongshan Station since the electrical properties of Antarctic glaciers and Martian materials are to some extent comparable. The results in this work show that compared with common migration algorithm, the v(z) f-k method not only improves the clarity of radar image but also provides the permittivity profiles to infer the composition of the substrate, leading to a better understanding of Martian near-surface geology.

The optical and radar satellite data based Global Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) serve as a main data source in hydrological studies today. Open access Remote Sensing (RS) products have increasing accuracy and improved spatial resolution. The main research purposes are to study the use of AW3D30, ASTER GDEM V003 and SRTMGL1 DEMs in modeling mountainous lake basin and comparative analysis of their spatial accuracy. Topographic maps and very high resolution satellite imagery of the study area have been applied for the spatial accuracy verification and surface referencing. The relative accuracies of three different DEMs were analyzed using 1284 elevation points on the terrain surfaces. Comparison of these DEMs with 30 m spatial resolution confirms that an AW3D30 DEM has a higher vertical accuracy compared to other models and can be used for modeling river and lake basins over high mountainous terrain. The detected unreliable sections of the modeled lake basin boundary were analyzed and corrected based on the basin delineation by different DEMs. Analysis of spatial accuracy of the delineated Issyk-Kul Lake basin provide further incentive for DEM modification based on higher resolution remote sensing data, considering the applied geoid height differences as well by using satellite positioning data.
