Epoxy resin impregnated paper (RIP) bushings are widely used as transformer bushings and wall bushings, but this type of bushing is easy to be dampened. In order to study the effect of moisture on the bushings' insulation performance, a test device was established to simulate the moisture absorption process in the air or N2 gas. Based on the frequency-domain dielectric spectroscopy (FDS) method, FDS curves that indicate the dielectric loss factor (tan δ) and capacitance (C) under different frequencies were tested and analysed. The results demonstrated that the FDS curve moves to the high frequency direction with the increase of the moisture content, and there exist minus tan δ and a negative peak in low-frequency band. Since the moisture content is much lower than in the air, tan δ and C under power frequency of the bushing almost unchanged in the N2 gas. However, the tan δ under 0.1 Hz increases sharply with the increase of trace moisture, and the higher moisture content, the greater increase rate. A damp diagnosis method for RIP bushings is proposed based on the FDS curves' frequency translation characteristics and tan δ variation law. Abstract: Natural continuous bast fibres (hemp, flax, etc.) are gaining popularity in composite materials because they can advantageously replace glass fibres. It is found that intrinsic properties of unidirectional (UD) composites are almost equivalent to those of unidirectional glass fibre composites. Unfortunately it is difficult to get repeatable results because of the inherent variability in the properties of bast fibres compared to glass fibres. Their quality is largely affected by the weather conditions, the extraction location along the plant and the techniques used to extract them (retting, bleaching, etc.). In this work, unidirectional hemp/paper/epoxy and flax/paper/epoxy composites are manufactured by adding one or two sheets of paper at the surface of a unidirectional layer of hemp or flax fibres before molding. The composites are tested under tensile loads and the results compared with those obtained for UD composites made without paper. The results show a significant increase in strength and modulus repeatability when the paper layer is present. A significant increase in strength and modulus was also obtained compared to the base epoxy properties. The resin permeability of the flax–paper reinforcement has also been evaluated and compared to that of a standard glass fabric. Globally, the results suggest that adding thin sheets of paper at the surface of reinforcement layers stabilizes and increases the composite strength but slightly reduces the Young’s modulus. However the permeability of the flax–paper reinforcement was much lower than that of the glass fabric. Modifications to the paper architecture will be required to improve this aspect. The overall reliability of a power transformer depends to a great extent on the sound operation of the bushings thereof. Oil impregnated paper (OIP) insulated bushings have been in use for a long time now. In many situations, it becomes necessary to avoid OIP insulation in bushings. In the recent past, a new technological breakthrough has been achieved whereby the OIP is replaced by epoxy resin impregnated crepe paper (RIP) insulation. This new system has several advantages over OIP and has now become the insulation of choice. However, its long time thermal and electrical performance need to be carefully assessed. This paper reports the results of a study of temperature distribution in the body of insulation, based on the ac conductivity of RIP insulation.
