Abstract

This paper proposes an iterative power allocation algorithm that maximizes the energy efficiency of a multiple-relay cooperative multiple antenna (MIMO) network. Energy efficiency is defined as the achievable spectral efficiency normalized by the total power consumption, which also accounts for the RF circuitry consumption, modeled in a wireless sensor network. Moreover, relay selection is performed using the distributed opportunistic selection protocol, while we derive closed-form expressions for outage probability and energy efficiency for a single antenna (SISO) and two MIMO scenarios: 1) based on antenna selection (AS) and 2) based on single value decomposition (SVD) beamforming. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, we compare it to an exhaustive search optimal power allocation method. Results show that the proposed algorithm performs very close to an exhaustive search approach and that, although MIMO SVD has the best outage performance, AS has the best energy efficiency for low and moderate source-destination distances and spectral efficiencies. Abstract

The energy efficiency of non-cooperative and cooperative transmissions are investigated in a two-dimensional wireless sensor network, considering a target outage probability, and the same end-to-end throughput for all transmission schemes. The impact of the relay selection method in the cooperative schemes is also analyzed. We show that under non line-of-sight conditions the relay selection method has a greater impact in the energy efficiency than the availability of a return channel. By its turn, under line-of-sight conditions a return channel is more valuable to the energy efficiency of cooperative transmission than the specific relay selection method. Finally, we demonstrate that the energy efficiency advantage of the .cooperative over the non-cooperative transmission increases with the distance among nodes and with the nodes density. Abstract

We compare the energy efficiency of some transmission schemes in wireless sensor networks. By constraining the system to end-to-end throughput requirements, we assume that the nodes in multi-hop and cooperative schemes operate at a spectral efficiency which is twice that of the single-hop transmission. By taking into account the energy consumption of the RF circuitry, we show that cooperation may be considerably more energy efficient than non-cooperative schemes even in small transmission ranges, specially if a feedback channel is available. Abstract

Esta dissertação de mestrado apresenta a análise feita sobre o impacto da interferência gerada por uma rede LoRaWAN coexistindo no mesmo ambiente que uma rede IEEE 802.15.4g de interesse. As simulações comparam o modo de múltiplos saltos, restrito ao dual-hop nessa análise, com um algoritmo cooperativo, ambos utilizando seleção de relays. Pretende-se avaliar o desempenho desses protocolos, de maneira que seja possível transmitir uma grande quantidade de informações durante o tempo de vida útil da rede, sem prejudicar a taxa de comunicação e, dessa forma, dimensionar a rede para consumir o mínimo de recursos necessários. Além disso, foram explorados cenários com diferentes configurações para determinar os impactos causados pela interferência de acordo com a característica de cada rede. Os resultados mostram que a modificação do protocolo de comunicação IEEE 802.15.4g visando suportar cooperação, especialmente em ambientes que sofrem interferências de outras redes, chega a transmitir de 4 a 20 vezes mais informação, para os parâmetros de rede aqui considerados, quando comparado com o método tradicional usando o modo dual-hop. Isso também permite que seja possível distribuir uma quantidade pelo menos 150 vezes menor de nós cooperativos para atingir o mesmo objetivo de quantidade de informação, o que implica em menos investimento em hardware. This master’s thesis presents the analysis made on the impact of the interference generated by a LoRaWAN network coexisting in the same environment of an IEEE 802.15.4g network of interest. This work analyses the impact of the interference generated by a LoRaWAN network coexisting in the same environment of an IEEE 802.15.4g network of interest. The simulations compare the multi-hop mode, restricted to dual-hop in this analysis, with a cooperative algorithm, both using relay selection. It is intended to evaluate the performance of these protocols, só that it is possible to transmit a large amount of information during the lifetime of the network, without impairing the communication rate and, thus, dimensioning the network to consume the minimum of necessary resources. The results show that the modification of the IEEE 802.15.4g communication protocol in order to support cooperation, especially in environments that are affected by interference from other networks, transmits from 4 to 20 times more information, with the system parameters here considered, when comparing to the traditional method using the dual-hop mode. This also allows it to be possible to distribute at least 150 times fewer cooperative nodes to achieve the same amount of information objective, which means less hardware investment.
