The interrupting duty of high-voltage circuit breakers can be reduced by increasing the contact parting time, which is the sum of tripping delay and the circuit breaker opening time. The contact parting time is fixed; however, the tripping delay can be increased. Although this method is not discussed in current technical literature, it is valid according to the ANSI/IEEE standards. Immediate replacement of the circuit breakers or other alternatives to reduce interrupting duties can be avoided, resulting in large cost savings and process downtime. The problem occurred in a large paper mill distribution system, where the circuit breakers were applied well within their close and latch ratings but the interrupting duty exceeded by 6%. By introducing an additional tripping delay of one cycle, the interrupting duty is reduced and the existing breakers are retained in service. This paper demonstrates these calculations. The profitable commercialization and swift growth in electrified transportation requires load management controllers. Effective load management controllers can reduce the peak load on the power grid, balance the load demand and improve the stability of the power grid. Several techniques are available to optimize the load, including battery swapping, vehicle-to-grid (V2G), vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) approaches. This paper addresses effects of rising adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and the potential for an increased load on the distribution system, which requires load optimization to ensure sustainable development. This paper offers a comprehensive review of all possible energy management controllers used in EVs for load optimization and power split controllers for splitting power between the battery and super-capacitor in hybrid energy storage systems (HESS) to increase battery life span. These controllers are classified into three categories, fuzzy logic controller, voltage-based controller and soft computing-based controller, with their constraints, advantages and disadvantages and finally sum up with their current challenges and future recommendation. The paper also reveals the wireless charging with their pros and cons. The findings have implications for the design and implementation of controllers for EVs to ensure their sustainable development and reduce fossil fuel usage. The integration of supercapacitors as hybrid energy storage systems in electric vehicles has attracted the attention of many researchers and has been considered as a promising solution. Bidirectional DC/DC converters (BDDCs) play a fundamental role in HESS, as they manage the power flow by controlling currents and regulating the DC bus voltage. However, they encounter the challenge of uncertainties and high fluctuation power loads, necessitating the fast dynamics, stability, and high robustness of the controller. This paper proposes a novel hybrid proportional–integral and backstepping cascade controller to regulate the DC‐bus voltage under uncertainties and load variations, and to control the current references of the on‐boarded sources. To confirm the asymptotic stability of the whole system, a nonlinear stability analysis is conducted using the Lyapunov theorem. A power management strategy is applied to distribute the power loads and generate reference currents for the BDDCs controller. Simulations results under various driving cycles using MATLAB/Simulink demonstrate the superiority of the proposed controller compared to conventional proportional–integral and backstepping controllers. This paper presents a method to design an integrated path tracking and lateral stability controller for an autonomous electric vehicle with four-wheel independent steering (4WIS) on low friction roads. Recent advances in autonomous driving have led to extensive studies on path tracking control. However, path tracking is difficult on low friction roads. In this paper, path tracking control was converted to the yaw rate tracking one to cope with problems caused by low friction roads. To generate a reference yaw rate for path tracking, we present several methods using a driver model and a target path. For yaw rate tracking, we designed a controller with a two-layer control hierarchy, i.e., upper and lower layers. The control yaw moment was calculated using a direct yaw moment controller in the upper layer. In the low layer, a control allocation method was adopted to allocate the control yaw moment into steering angles of 4WIS. To verify the performance of the proposed controller, we conducted a simulation on vehicle simulation software. From the simulation results, it is shown that the proposed controller is effective for path tracking and lateral stability on low friction roads. To analyze path tracking and lateral stability performance of the proposed controller on low friction roads, the effects of the steady-state yaw rate gain are investigated from the simulation results. Power sharing among multiterminal high voltage direct current terminals (MT-HVDC) is mainly developed based on a priority or sequential manners, which uses to prevent the problem of overloading due to a predefined controller coefficient. Furthermore, fixed power sharing control also suffers from an inability to identify power availability at a rectification station. There is a need for a controller that ensures an efficient power sharing among the MT-HVDC terminals, prevents the possibility of overloading, and utilizes the available power sharing. A new adaptive wireless control for active power sharing among multiterminal (MT-HVDC) systems, including power availability and power management policy, is proposed in this paper. The proposed control strategy solves these issues and, this proposed controller strategy is a generic method that can be applied for unlimited number of converter stations. The rational of this proposed controller is to increase the system reliability by avoiding the necessity of fast communication links. The test system in this paper consists of four converter stations based on three phase-two AC voltage levels. The proposed control strategy for a multiterminal HVDC system is conducted in the power systems computer aided design/electromagnetic transient design and control (PSCAD/EMTDC) simulation environment. Software-defined networking (SDN) is widely used in multiple types of data center networks, and these distributed data center networks can be integrated into a multi-domain SDN by utilizing multiple controllers. However, the network topology of each control domain of SDN will affect the performance of the multidomain network, so performance evaluation is required before the deployment of the multi-domain SDN. Besides, there is a high cost to build real multi-domain SDN networks with different topologies, so it is necessary to use simulation testing methods to evaluate the topological performance of the multi-domain SDN network. As there is a lack of existing methods to construct a multi-domain SDN simulation network for the tool to evaluate the topological performance automatically, this paper proposes an automated multi-domain SDN topology performance evaluation framework, which supports multiple types of SDN network topologies in cooperating to construct a multi-domain SDN network. The framework integrates existing single-domain SDN simulation tools with network performance testing tools to realize automated performance evaluation of multidomain SDN network topologies. We designed and implemented a Mininet-based simulation tool that can connect multiple controllers and run user-specified topologies in multiple SDN control domains to build and test multi-domain SDN networks faster. Then, we used the tool to perform performance tests on various data center network topologies in single-domain and multi-domain SDN simulation environments. Test results show that Space Shuffle has the most stable performance in a single-domain environment, and Fat-tree has the best performance in a multi-domain environment. Emulation of an electric machine allows the testing of a drive inverter and controller of an electric drive system, prior to the manufacture of a machine prototype. This paper presents the emulation of a variable flux machine (VFM). The VFM emulator system proposed in this paper uses a detailed look-up table-based machine model for the purpose of emulation. This allows the emulator to mimic all machine magnetic and geometric behaviors such as saturation and torque ripple. In addition, the machine emulator proposed in this paper uses high-performance high-bandwidth linear amplifiers as power amplifiers. This enables a high bandwidth; leading to a high accuracy machine emulation. A detailed control description for the proposed machine emulator system and a machine model look-up table data verification against a prototype machine is initially presented. Experimental results are then presented to validate the utility of the proposed VFM emulator system to emulate various machine transient behaviors at different magnetization levels. Experimental results obtained from the emulator are subsequently compared against the experimental results obtained from a prototype VFM drive to verify the emulation accuracy. Recent developments in electrical power grids have witnessed high utilization levels of renewable energy sources (RESs) and increased trends that benefit the batteries of electric vehicles (EVs). However, modern electrical power grids cause increased concerns due to their continuously reduced inertia resulting from RES characteristics. Therefore, this paper proposes an improved fractional-order frequency controller with a design optimization methodology. The proposed controller is represented by two cascaded control loops using the one-plus-proportional derivative (1 + PD) in the outer loop and a fractional-order proportional integral derivative (FOPID) in the inner loop, which form the proposed improved 1 + PD/FOPID. The main superior performance characteristics of the proposed 1 + PD/FOPID fractional-order frequency controller over existing methods include a faster response time with minimized overshoot/undershoot peaks, an ability for mitigating both high- and low-frequency disturbances, and coordination of EV participation in regulating electrical power grid frequency. Moreover, simultaneous determination of the proposed fractional-order frequency controller parameters is proposed using the recent manta ray foraging optimization (MRFO) algorithm. Performance comparisons of the proposed 1 + PD/FOPID fractional-order frequency controller with existing PID, FOPID, and PD/FOPID controllers are presented in the paper. This paper clearly demonstrates the structure of Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) power supply system and analyzes principles of the finite-state machine (FSM) elaborately. Depending on the characteristics of EAST power supply system and the requirements of it, this paper chooses the real-time Linux as system platform and experimental physics and industrial control system (EPICS) as development tool to design a control system of the EAST poloidal field power system supply. This paper utilizes a temporal logic control based on the FSM in order to regulate the operation process of real-time sequence logic control of 12 sets of power controllers. This design is evaluated and tested, and it completely meets the real-time requirement of the poloidal field power supply (PFPS) control system. Several experiments have proved that this design definitely meets the real-time sequence logic control requirement of the PFPS control system in the complex situations under magnetic fields. In the paper by Patra et al., a single-inductor multiple-output switcher was presented to produce buck, boost, and inverted outputs simultaneously. Unfortunately, this study showed some unexpected mistakes, especially in state-space equations and in the calculation of output voltages. The objective of this note was to provide correct analysis and rectify the errors in this paper. Some tables and equations have been modified that were present in the initial draft of this paper. Shape memory alloys (SMAs) exhibit a unique property that undergoes deformation in response to temperature variation. This characteristic can be utilized via the application of a filiform SMA wire to tendon-driven robotic actuators for biomimetic joint movements. However, due to the inefficiencies in heat dissipation, conventional SMA tendon-driven actuators are characterized by their lower relaxation speeds than other actuators. This paper proposes a novel cooling design for an SMA tendon-driven actuator using thin-fin heat sinks based on a multi-layer wrapped SMA tendon design. In addition, the electric circuit and the controller are refined. Prototype devices are constructed to validate the performance of SMA-based actuators under PID control. The results indicate that the proposed design exceeds previous models in terms of relaxation performance by up to 5.8 times while also being able to stabilize at a target angle within 0.5 s under control. A large class of three-phase electrical power systems possess symmetry conditions that make it possible to describe their behavior using single-input single-output transfer functions with complex coefficients. In such cases, an extended root locus method can be used to design control laws, even though the actual systems are multi-input multi-output. In this paper, the symmetric conditions for a large class of power systems are analyzed. Then, the root locus method is revisited for systems with complex coeffcients and used for the analysis and control design of power systems. This paper presents a literature review on magnetically-controlled devices, variable inductors (VI), and variable transformers (VT), and their applications to lighting gears for discharge lamps and/or LED lamps. These current-controlled devices are mainly characterized by nonlinear and non-uniform saturation of the magnetic core. The paper describes the fundamentals and basic operating principle of such devices and provides an overview of existing patents. These patents refer the devices, VIs or VTs, as useful or industrially applicable. Some present one or more claims regarding the construction of the device and behavioral characteristic; others refer to specific applications, such as voltage regulation or universal ballast operation. Afterwards, the paper focuses on the review of specific techniques and circuits taking advantage of the presence of a controlled inductance value, by covering recent applications regarding discharge and solid-state lamp drivers. These applications will show how these multi-winding devices, typically not considered due to their low efficiency, may fulfill an important role and add features to state-of-the-art lamp drivers. Software-defined networking (SDN) is a trending networking paradigm that focuses on decoupling of the control logic from the data plane. This decoupling brings programmability and flexibility for the network management by introducing centralized infrastructure. The complete control logic resides in the controller, and thus it becomes the intellectual and most important entity of the SDN infrastructure. With these advantages, SDN faces several security issues in various SDN layers that may prevent the growth and global adoption of this groundbreaking technology. Control plane exhaustion and switch buffer overflow are examples of such security issues. Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks are one of the most severe attacks that aim to exhaust the controller's CPU to discontinue the whole functioning of the SDN network. Hence, it is necessary to design a quick as well as accurate detection scheme to detect the attack traffic at an early stage. In this paper, we present a defense solution to detect and mitigate spoofed flooding DDoS attacks. The proposed defense solution is implemented in the SDN controller. The detection method is based on the idea of an statistical measure d Interquartile Range (IQR). For the mitigation purpose, the existing SDN-in-built capabilities are utilized. In this work, the experiments are performed considering the spoofed SYN flooding attack. The proposed solution is evaluated using different performance parameters, i.e., detection time, detection accuracy, packet_in messages, and CPU utilization. The ever growing penetration of distributed generation (DG) in a distribution network has a profound impact on network protection and stability. Traditional protection schemes and algorithms need to be extensively investigated as more and more DGs get introduced into the network. The current version of IEEE Standard 1547 does not present a comprehensive solution for fault current detection in the presence of various kinds of DGs. Power electronic inverter-based DGs (IBDGs) are of special concern in distribution network protection as they are often incapable of providing sufficient fault current and their controllers play a principal role in the DG behavior. In this paper, the effects of voltage and current controllers for IBDGs on industrial and commercial power system protection schemes are investigated. It is shown that the inverter control mode has a direct impact on its fault current levels and duration. A simplified distribution network model with IBDG operating under voltage and current control modes was tested to verify the effects of these controllers. In order to strengthen the onshore transmission network in many parts of the world, voltage-source current–high-voltage direct current (VSC–HVDC) will increasingly be utilized. The effect of the operating point of a VSC-HVDC link and the control strategies employed can substantially affect the electromechanical oscillatory behavior of the ac network as well as the dc-side dynamics. In order for the full, flexible capability of VSC-HVDC to be exploited, further study of the effects of these controllers and their interactions with ac system responses is necessary. Dealing with convergence time and dealing with steady state are two of the most challenging problems in the field of stability of the hydraulic turbine governing system. In this paper, we solve these two challenging problems by designing fixed-time feedback controllers. The design of the controllers is based on the fixed-time theory and backstepping method. Compared with the existing controllers for fixed-time, finite-time, and other techniques, the designed controllers make the maximum convergence time of the system unaffected by the initial state. The convergence time is also shorter. Meanwhile, they are continuous and do not include any sign function, and hence, the chattering phenomenon in most of the existing results is overcome via nonchattering control. In addition, they give the system better stability and robustness to disturbances. To improve the structure layout flexibility and performance of the X-by-wire (XBW) ground vehicle, the control configured vehicle (CCV) principle is implemented on an XBW electric vehicle in this paper. By including the electric control system design together with the mechanical component design for the final layout, the CCV enhances the structure layout flexibility of the XBW ground vehicle considerably. Under the CCV principle, the closed-loop stability of the vehicle lateral dynamics system is improved by the involved yaw control system. In this paper, a robust pole assignment yaw controller with the consideration of parametric uncertainties is used. A full XBW electric vehicle testbed is shown as an example to demonstrate the benefit of the CCV of improving the hardware layout flexibility. Under the CCV, all the XBW components can be located flexibly to any position to enhance the configuration of the electric wires, saving of the space, and convenience of the assembling. The discussion of the yaw moment demand in different cases shows how the mechanical components and electric control systems influence and benefit each other in the CCV. In this paper, dynamic performance of automatic generation control (AGC) of two area thermal–thermal power system is determined through the steam chest and reheater constant trajectories. In earlier AGC studies, steam chest and reheater time constants denoted as T\text{SC} and T\text{RH} are considered to be constant, irrespective of plant generation schedules. However, it is discovered that T\text{SC} and T\text{RH} follow the specific trajectories with the plant generation schedules. These time constant trajectories are determined by the power output control strategies being employed to change the plant generation schedules. These control strategies are the different combinations of steam pressure versus flow rate curves used to operate the plant at different generation schedules. In this paper, time constant versus generation schedule trajectories of T\text{SC} and T\text{RH} have been derived for different power output control strategies. Continuous varying load demand conditions in modern power systems causes frequency variations. Hence, an intelligent controller is necessary for frequency regulation. In this paper, a hybrid African Vulture Optimization Algorithm and Pattern Search (hAVOA-PS) based Fractional Order PID controller with derivative Filter (FOPIDF) is suggested for Automatic Generation Control (AGC) of Electric Vehicles (EVs) integrated power systems. Proposed hAVOA-PS algorithm is first tested using four bench mark test functions and compared with original African Vulture Optimization Algorithm (AVOA), Differential Evolution (DE), Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to show its superiority. The proposed technique is then used to tune various conventional controllers in a single area three-unit power system consisting of thermal hydro and gas power plants for AGC. The superiority of proposed hAVOA-PS algorithm over some recently proposed frequency control approaches has been demonstrated. In the next step, different controllers like PI, PID, and FOPIDF are taken and EVs are integrated in the power system. The proposed approach is also extended to a two-area six-unit power system. This paper discusses the basic principles of operation of a controller intended to limit the electrical energy consumption. The energy consumer is controlled depending on the amount of energy used, the magnitude of the load current and the pre-set permissible twenty-four-hour limit of electricity. The following possible situations are covered: the consumer has used energy equal to or less than the limit set within a 24-hour period; the consumer has used up the entire energy limit in less than 24 hours; the current through the consumer periodically exceeds the pre-set current limit; and training the consumer to use energy wisely by applying sanctions - temporary disconnections of the power supply. Centralized control, which can overcome the ill interactional effects among decentralized controllers, impels a real need for fast and reliable computational algorithms to improve the accuracy of phasor and power measurements. This paper deals with discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based measurement techniques. Based on the practical frequency tracking method proposed by the same authors in another paper, this paper develops practical compensation method to improve the phasor and power measurement accuracy of the DFT algorithm. The method proposed by this paper takes full advantage of the DFT algorithm. It simply modifies the DFT results. With notable accuracy improvement, the calculation burden of the proposed method is little more than the DFT algorithm. The method can be used for on-line purposes. Though the analog signal studied in this paper is sinusoidal signal, the method proposed by this paper has good performance in the presence of harmonics. In a large-scale power electronic system such as a wind farm, the mutual interactions between the power converter controllers and passive components may lead to instability problems or undesired dynamic response. This paper presents an optimum parameter design procedure for the power converter controllers in a power electronic system in order to guarantee a stable operation and to guarantee an acceptable dynamic response. In the approach, first, all oscillatory modes are calculated by a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) transfer function matrix of the power system; then, a multi-objective optimization procedure based on the genetic algorithm (GA) is presented to place the modes in the desired locations in order to increase the stability margin and to improve the dynamic response. This paper presents a decoupled power control strategy for a modular multilevel converter (MMC)-based hybrid ac–dc grid integrated with a hybrid energy storage system. This system can mitigate the active power fluctuations caused by intermittent renewable generation and also realize reactive power compensation as required by voltage regulation. The proposed hybrid ac–dc system has a novel configuration in which batteries and supercapacitors are distributed into the upper arm and the lower arm of the MMC, respectively. Therefore, it is possible to design fully decoupled power control and simultaneously optimize the performances of batteries and supercapacitors. First, the system modeling and operational principles of the MMC are briefly introduced in this paper. On the basis of these analyses, the power decoupling between the upper arm and the lower arm is presented to realize different control objectives. Moreover, battery state-of-charge balancing control and supercapacitor voltage control are also presented, which are crucial for ensuring the normal operation of these energy storage components and the proposed MMC-based hybrid ac–dc grid. In order to protect the power electronic equipment and make the output current amplitude of distributed generation (DG) maintain a stable value for different short-circuit faults, this paper proposed a current-limiting strategy based on proportional-resonant controller (PR), filtering inductance reference current (FIRC), and shunt active power filter (APF) for droop controlled microgrid. First, the relationship is discussed in detail among the output current of DG, the output voltage of DG and FIRC, theoretical derivation demonstrates that the error between output current of DG and FIRC can be decreased through adjusting the value of PR parameters, filtering capacitance and the compensation current obtained by APF. Moreover, some advantages of proposed strategy for microgrid protection are discussed. Then, when the fault is detected, the current-limiting strategy is implemented by setting the FIRC value. Finally, the experiments prove that the proposed strategy can precisely limit the maximum phase current to the given value which cannot be influenced by the short-circuit fault type, grounding resistance, fault initial phase, non-linear load, and so on. This paper presents the three-phase custom power active transformer (CPAT), characterized by the integration of power electronics in a transformer to facilitate grid services. Such integration enables step-up/step-down transformation between primary and secondary as well as shunt and series compensation services to the power system through a single transformer. The CPAT can empower the grid with flexible ac transmission system and power quality services such as power flow control, reactive power compensation, active filter, and voltage regulation through a single monolithic transformer. In this paper, designs of the three-phase CPAT are realized and analyzed based on their equivalent magnetic circuit as well as their structure requirements and constraints. Simulation analysis of the three-phase CPAT clarifies its capability to actively regulate power flow between the primary and secondary windings as well as achieve grid harmonic current compensation. This paper presents a novel approach for treating the harmonic torque in permanent magnet motors at selected harmonic orders. The method is based on the online estimation of the motor harmonic flux. For this purpose, a novel minimal parameter harmonic flux estimator (MPHFE) is developed. The MPHFE is formulated such that the inductance, resistance, and stator current and its derivative are not necessary for the estimation of the harmonic flux. This was achieved by forcing the harmonic current to zero through the combined action of a field-oriented controller (FOC) and a feedforward controller. Subsequently, the harmonic flux can be obtained directly from the estimated harmonic back EMF without the involvement of other motor parameters. Finally, the estimated flux is used in conjunction with a comprehensive model of the motor harmonic torque to determine the stator current compensation for eliminating the torque harmonic. Experimental results presented from a permanent magnet motor confirm the theoretical claims in this paper as well as demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method to reduce the magnitude of the harmonic torque significantly. A study is presented in this paper that uses a simple mechanical analogy to analytically tune the PD (proportional-derivative) controller of a linear flexible manipulator system. More specifically, the aim is to give simple closed-form solutions of the optimal P and D gains to yield the maximum bandwidth under a given damping requirement or conversely the maximum damping under a given bandwidth requirement. The idea of this study is based on the observation that the performance of the complete manipulator system is largely determined by the operational dynamics of the fundamental vibration mode. A lumped element method is thus applied to model this dynamics in terms of simple lumped mechanical elements. It subsequently turns out that the original servo control problem is analogous to a conventional Zener mount design problem, that is, mathematically, to optimize a third-order dynamic system consisting of the Zener model of a viscoelastic mount and an inertial object upon it. A design methodology is finally established to analytically determine the optimal elements of the mount, corresponding to the optimal control gains. In the two-stage photovoltaic (PV) micro-inverters, the bipolar hysteresis current control with soft switching for dc/ac inverter can achieve fast dynamic response, robust current regulation and high efficiency even with higher switching frequency. To further reduce the switching losses, unipolar hysteresis current control is desirable. However, it suffers from zero-crossing distortions and low frequency harmonics in the grid current. To solve those problems, this paper proposes a combined proportional resonant (PR) and hybrid hysteresis current control strategy. By investigating the reasons for zero-crossing distortions, hybrid hysteresis current control is applied to enable bipolar modulation around the zero-crossing zone and unipolar modulation in all other zones of the line period. At the same time, due to the wide hysteresis bands for soft switching, low output inductance and non-negligible sampling intervals from the digital controller, there will be many low frequency harmonics in the spectrum of output inductor current which deteriorates the quality of power absorbed by the grid. Therefore, the PR control may be used as well to mitigate the low frequency harmonics. The theoretical analysis of the proposed solutions are explained in this paper. This paper discusses the control of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) used as a grid interface for the klystron modulators in the compact linear collider (CLIC). The converter has a DC side load which takes short-duration power pulses, causing high DC side power fluctuations that are not tolerable if seen by the AC grid. The DC–AC power decoupling capability of the MMC enables mitigation of the power ripple on the AC side, guaranteeing compliance with power quality requirements. However, the pulse repetition rate of the CLIC modulators is synchronized the 50-Hz AC grid and this induces permanent power imbalance in the arms of the MMC, causing voltage deviation and overmodulation unless appropriate balancing strategies are implemented. Unlike existing arm balancing methods that control 50-Hz circulating currents to balance the arm powers, the method proposed in this paper introduces an augmented modulation strategy where modulation signals are redistributed among arms based on the demand from a balancing controller. The resulting controller has lower complexity and its simple structure enables an easier design of the balancing loop, which guarantees predictable dynamics in operation. The effectiveness of the method has been demonstrated in simulation for the full-scale CLIC converter ratings and experimentally on a 7-kW MMC prototype operating with a 3.3-kA pulsed DC load. It is known that, when tightly regulated, actively controlled power converters behave as constant power loads (CPLs). These loads can significantly degrade the stability of their feeder system. The loop-cancelation technique has been established as an appropriate methodology to mitigate this issue within dc–dc converters that feed CPLs. However, this has not yet been applied to uncontrolled rectifier based ac–dc converters. This paper therefore details a new methodology that allows the loop-cancelation technique to be applied to uncontrolled rectifier based ac–dc converters in order to mitigate instability when supplying CPLs. This technique could be used in both new applications and easily retrofitted into existing applications. Furthermore, the key contribution of this paper is a novel adaptive stabilization technique, which eliminates the destabilizing effect of CPLs for the studied ac–dc power system. An equation, derived from the average system model, is introduced and utilized to calculate the adaptable gain required by the loop-cancelation technique. As a result, the uncontrolled rectifier based ac–dc feeder system is always stable for any level of CPL. This paper proposes a novel multifunctional controller for a dimmable high-power-factor single-switch electronic ballast that can be used with standard phase-cut dimmers. Conventional dimmable electronic ballasts lack the ability to 1) provide smooth dimming and maintain high power factor when phase-cut dimmers are used and 2) regulate the lamp power when the input line voltage varies. A digital controller with multiple control functions is proposed in this paper. The proposed controller allows high power factor to be achieved by controlling the duty cycle during dimming with standard phase-cut dimmers. On the other hand, when dimming is not required, the lamp power is regulated through the regulation of the dc-link voltage. Additional control functions, such as lamp low-power cutoff operation, and protection function are also implemented inside the digital controller. This paper presents an adaptive equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) and a linear quadratic tracking (LQT) method for optimal power-split control of a combustion engine and an electric machine in a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). The objective is to deliver demanded torque and minimize fuel consumption and usage of service brakes, subject to constraints on actuator limits and battery state of charge (SOC). First, we derive a function for calculating maximum deliverable torque that is as close as possible to demanded torque and then reduce the number of control inputs to one while minimizing the usage of service brakes in the case of negative demanded torque. Next, we propose modeling SOC constraints by tangent or logarithm functions that provide an interior point to both the ECMS and the LQT. Then, we show that the resulting objective functions are convex, and we propose sub-optimal analytic solutions for the optimization problem by applying their second order approximation about a given reference. We also consider robustness of the controllers to measurement noise using a simple model of noise. Simulation results of the two controllers are compared, and their effectiveness is discussed. Because of the lack of upstream grid support and low inertia, independent microgrids are very susceptible to load variations and uncertainty in the generation of renewable energy sources. Disruption of microgrid frequency stability causes severe damage to various system equipment and frequency-sensitive loads. By taking into account the effects of electric vehicles (EVs), this paper introduces an innovative control strategy with a master-slave configuration for frequency control of interconnected microgrids. In the proposed configuration, an integer-order controller serves as the master, while a merely fractional-order integrator acts as the slave controller. The master and slave controllers are concurrently optimized by the JAYA intelligent algorithm to achieve robust effectiveness. Additionally, nonlinearities in the system are implemented, such as diesel generator operating limits, signal controllers, and sending/receiving time delays. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy in a two-area microgrid, six basic scenarios are investigated: sudden load changes, perturbations at the inputs of renewable energy-based units, parametric uncertainties, time-delay effects as a nonlinear factor, complicated working conditions, and EVs impacts. Moreover, the controller's performance on a simple closed-loop system has been carried out in order to confirm the viability of its practical implementation, and a comparison of experimental and simulation findings has also been provided. Modern structures of electrical power systems are expected to have more domination of renewable energy sources. However, renewable energy-based generation systems suffer from their lack of or reduced rotating masses, which is the main source of power system inertia. Therefore, the frequency of modern power systems represents an important indicator of their proper and safe operation. In addition, the uncertainties and randomness of the renewable energy sources and the load variations can result in frequency undulation problems. In this context, this paper presents an improved cascaded fractional order-based frequency regulation controller for a two-area interconnected power system. The proposed controller uses the cascade structure of the tilt integral derivative (TID) with the fractional order proportional integral derivative with a filter (FOPIDN or PI λ D μ N) controller (namely the cascaded TID-FOPIDN or TID-PI λ D μ N controller). Moreover, an optimized TID control method is presented for the electric vehicles (EVs) to maximize their benefits and contribution to the frequency regulation of power systems. The recent widely employed marine predators optimization algorithm (MPA) is utilized to design the new proposed controllers. The proposed controller and design method are tested and validated at various load and renewable source variations, as is their robustness against parameter uncertainties of power systems. Performance comparisons of the proposed controller with featured frequency regulation controllers in the literature are provided to verify the superiority of the new proposed controller. The obtained results confirm the stable operation and the frequency regulation performance of the new proposed controller with optimized controller parameters and without the need for complex design methods. This paper investigates application of an unconstrained model predictive controller (MPC) known as a finite horizon linear quadratic regulator (LQR) for current control of a switched reluctance motor (SRM). The proposed LQR can cope with the measurement noise as well as uncertainties within the machine inductance profile. This paper utilizes MPC to generate the optimal duty cycles for drive of SRMs using pulse-width modulation (PWM) in oppose to delta-modulation. In this paper, first a practical MPC scheme for embedded implementation of the system is introduced. Afterward, Kalman filtering is used for state estimation while an adaptive controller is used to dynamically tune and update both MPC and Kalman models. Hence, the overall control structure is considered as a stochastic MPC with adaptive model calibration. In this paper, a new technique to equalize light-emitting diode (LED) currents in multiarray LED lamps is proposed. The current through the LEDs is controlled by changing the inductance of a variable inductor. The proposed technique can be employed to control the current through each LED branch independently. The operation principle of this technique and a design example of the proposed system are presented in detail in this paper. As an example, a forward converter has been selected to supply the LED branches, which can be designed to operate with one or several outputs. The component values of the converter as well as the LED current control circuit are also calculated as a design example. A prototype of the circuit has been implemented. The experimental results obtained at the laboratory are satisfactory and in accordance to the proposed design methodology. A merit of the interleaving reducing the switching harmonics allows for the reduction of the filter inductance. However, in the case of direct parallel voltage source inverters (VSIs), a severe circulating current occurs. To suppress the high frequency circulating current, coupled inductors (CIs) for the high impedance is inserted. However, the employed CIs induce a positive- or negative-sequence circulating current (i.e., a cross current) besides the zero-sequence circulating current already mentioned in the other papers. Due to different impedances developed by the current characteristics and the cross current in the CIs, VSIs becomes unstable when the resonant controllers are applied for the harmonic compensation such as 5, and 7th harmonics. In this paper, the cross currents and the impedances of CIs varying with the current characteristics are mathematically analyzed, and a novel current controller is proposed to solve this stability problem. This paper presents a multiphase induction system modeling for a metal disc heating and further industrial applications such as hot strip mill. An original architecture, with three concentric inductors supplied by three resonant current inverters, leads to a reduced element system, without any coupling transformers, phase loop, mobile screens, or mobile magnetic cores as it could be found in classical solutions. A simulation model is built, based on simplified equivalent models of electric and thermal phenomena. It takes into account the data extracted from Flux2D finite-element software, concerning the energy transfer between the inductor currents and the piece to be heated. It is implemented in a versatile software PSIM, initially dedicated to power electronics. An optimization procedure calculates the optimal supply currents in the inverters in order to obtain a desired power density profile in the work piece. This paper presents the modular multilevel cascade converter based on double-star chopper-cells, which is intended for grid connection to medium-voltage power systems without using line-frequency transformers. The converter is characterized by a modular arm structure consisting of cascade connection of multiple bidirectional pulsewidth modulation chopper-cells with floating dc capacitors. This arm structure requires voltage-balancing control of all the dc capacitors. However, the voltage control combining an averaging control with an individual-balancing control imposes certain limitations on operating conditions. This paper proposes an arm-balancing control to achieve voltage balancing under all the operating conditions. In this paper, a new control system to regulate the reactive power supplied by a variable-speed wind energy conversion system (WECS), based on an induction generator fed by a matrix converter (MC), is presented. The control system discussed in this paper is based on an input current observer, implemented using an estimation of the modulation matrix, and a nonlinear control loop that regulates the displacement angle at the MC input. The reactive power capability of the proposed system is also investigated. The work presented in this paper demonstrates that, for the proposed WECS, the maximum reactive power supplied to the grid is about 40% of the nominal value. Experimental results obtained from an experimental prototype are presented in this paper. Over the past few decades, ultraviolet (UV) water treatment has become widely recognized and accepted by regulatory agencies as a proven disinfection process. With the increased awareness of health concerns and water quality, UV disinfection is quickly gaining popularity in the consumer market as a safe, effective, and economical approach to disinfection. In order to disinfect properly, conventional UV water-treatment systems keep their light intensity at maximum level regardless of the operating condition; this will result in unnecessary energy waste along with lamp-life-span reduction. In this paper, a new design of high- power-factor low-cost electronic ballast with intelligent control for UV water-treatment system is proposed. For the purposes of energy saving, an intelligent-control algorithm is proposed to dim the luminance of the UV lamp according to the measured water flow rate and UV light intensity. Accurate knowledge of the characteristics of the UV lamps is essential for the ballast design. Therefore, an automatic identification system is also proposed in this paper to obtain the characteristic parameters, which are the dynamic and steady-state profiles of the UV lamps. Systematic design procedures are then presented accordingly. The proposed UV water-treatment system boasts the advantages, such as compactness, low cost, and energy saving, and is suitable for residential users. Chaotic phenomenon of power electronic systems and electric motor drives were introduced a few decades ago and has been followed with numerous of published work. However, chaos of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), in particular, did not receive enough deserved interest. Considering this fact, this paper introduces a robust suboptimal control system for chaotic PMSMs. The proposed control system includes a suboptimal speed controller and a suboptimal load torque observer. The stability analysis and robustness properties of the proposed control system are presented in detail in this paper. Thanks to its robustness properties, the proposed suboptimal control system can not only eliminate the chaos but also provide better performances than conventional methods. Extensive simulations results under various scenarios prove the superiority of the proposed control technique over conventional controllers for chaotic PMSMs even under the condition of parameter uncertainties and variations of load torque disturbance. Time delay is prejudicial to power system stability and generally worsens the performance of a control system. In this paper, the approaches for stability analysis and stabilization of a power system consisting of time-varying delay are established. The paper starts with the modeling of the power system according to time-delay differential algebraic equations. An integral quadratic constraints (IQC) method is constructed to guarantee the stability of the proposed feedback controller. The frequency-domain IQC and time-domain dissipation inequality are effectively combined to perform stability analysis and stabilization of the power system considering time delays, without complex numerical computation. A two-area four-machine system, an IEEE 10-machine 39-bus system, and a WECC 179-bus system are employed to support the stability criteria and the IQC method. Diversification of control schemes adopted by inverter-interfaced distributed generators (IIDGs) leads to difficulties in fault current estimation in a microgrid, which might make preexisting protection systems invalid and threaten the safety of power electronic devices. It is therefore important to study fault characteristics of IIDGs. This paper investigates characteristics of fault current of IIDGs caused by both symmetrical and asymmetrical faults. Two kinds of widely used control modes, current control (constant current control and PQ control) and voltage control (V/F control and droop control), are under investigation to provide an intuitive comparison on fault current. In particular, a novel algorithm is proposed to calculate fault current of droop-controlled IIDGs. It is found that different limiters have great impacts on fault response of IIDGs and detailed research works are carried out to identify the effects in this paper.
