It is argued that the need to improve science education should be a national priority. Ways are suggested by which the federal government and the scientific community, working together, can address this issue. It is recommended that scientists, engineers, and educators make a significant personal and institutional commitment to participate in science education activities, and that the President of the United States provide the personal leadership to generate a national commitment to the improvement of education at all levels.

In an effort to recruit and train competent personnel for its medical library, Central Louisiana State Hospital undertook a pilot project in preprofessional training in mental health librarianship. Students received an introduction to the library as it operates in the hospital setting through a survey of the mental health sciences and the needs for library resources and services with special emphasis upon the librarian as a member of the hospital team.

In July 2011, Bill Gates told the "Wall Street Journal," "I'm enough of a scientist to want to say, "What is it about a great teacher?"" As a "practitioner" of sorts, the author has wondered the same thing for 15 years. The K-12 school sector generates little empirical research of any sort. And of this small amount, most is targeted to policymakers and superintendents, and concerns such matters as the effects of class size reduction, charter school attendance, or a merit-pay program for teachers. Why is there virtually no empirical education research meant to be consumed by the nation's 3 million teachers, answering their questions? Those 3 million teachers generate about 2 billion hour-long classes per year. People do not know empirically which "teacher moves," actions that are decided by individual teachers in their classrooms, are most effective at getting students to learn. The author argues that relative to education policy research, there is very, very little rigorous research on teacher moves. Bill Gates knows the reason for this is more than a lack of raw cash; it's also about someone taking responsibility for this work. The author contends that there are a number of other barriers. The first is a lack of demand. Moreover, neither policy camp, reformers nor traditionalists, care much about research into teacher moves, either. The final barrier to research on teacher moves is the divide between practitioners and researchers. In this article, the author proposes a typology of trials in studying teacher moves, delineating phases in a continuum. He proposes that each of the nation's 1,200-plus schools of education and teacher prep programs conduct one randomized trial on a teacher move each year: Phase 1, Phase 2, or Phase 3.

Everything valuable in education begins and ends with engagement. Schooling can be about many unpleasant things--compliance, stratification, control--and these don't always require engagement. But all of the positive things promised by education--things like opportunity, excellence, and openness--are possible only when minds are turned on and tuned in. This article presents 10 classroom strategies to hook students who would rather be anywhere else.

BackgroundIndividuals with intellectual disabilities experience barriers to quality healthcare. To reduce this disparity, equipping medical trainees with the knowledge and skills required for treating this patient population is critical. Our aim is to describe the breadth of instructional interventions and identify gaps in intellectual disability medical education curricula.MethodUsing scoping review methods, the intellectual disability programmes described in 27 articles were evaluated and their coverage of the six core competencies on disability for health care education was examined.ResultsThe most frequently represented core competencies were disability conceptual frameworks, professionalism and communication, and clinical assessment, which were, in most programmes, fulfilled by activities involving individuals with intellectual disabilities. Uneven competency coverage warrants consideration.ConclusionsConsiderable variabilities exist in medical school curricula on intellectual disabilities. Using core competencies on disability for health care education for curricular design and evaluation would provide a coherent training experience in this important area.

BACKGROUND: There are an increasing number of English Learners (EL) served in schools, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). However, little is known about students who receive school-based services as EL and under autism eligibility. PURPOSE & METHODS: The present study aimed to examine the sociodemographic characteristics, time to English Language Proficient status by survival analysis, and predictors of English fluency utilizing a logistic regression for dually identified EL and autism eligible students in a large urban school district during the 2011-2019 academic school years. RESULTS: Overall, dually identified students (N = 849) educated in segregated settings (N = 372) became English proficient at lower rates and at older ages than students included in general education (N = 477). CONCLUSION: Students placed in segregated special education classrooms were significantly less likely to achieve English Language Proficient classification. The present study begins to illustrate the time to English proficiency of dually identified students and the potential impact it has on their educational opportunities.

As medical schools move to integrate the Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency (EPAs) into curricula and address the transition from student to resident, residency preparatory courses have become more prevalent. The authors developed an experiential learning EPA-based capstone course for assessment to determine impact on learner self-assessed ratings of readiness for residency and acquisition of medical knowledge. All fourth-year students from the classes of 2018-2020 completed a required course in the spring for assessment of multiple EPAs, including managing core complaints, performing basic procedures, obtaining informed consent, and providing patient handoffs. Learners selected between three specialty-based parallel tracks - adult medicine, surgery, or pediatrics. Students completed a retrospective pre-post questionnaire to provide self-assessed ratings of residency preparedness and comfort in performing EPAs. Finally, the authors studied the impact of the course on knowledge acquisition by comparing student performance in the adult medicine track on multiple choice pre- and post-tests. Four hundred and eighty-one students were eligible for the study and 452 (94%) completed the questionnaire. For all three tracks, there was a statistically significant change in learner self-assessed ratings of preparedness for residency from pre- to post-course (moderately or very prepared: adult medicine 61.4% to 88.6% [p-value < 0.001]; surgery 56.8% to 81.1% [p-value < 0.001]; pediatrics 32.6% to 83.7% [p-value 0.02]). A similar change was noted in all tracks in learner self-assessed ratings of comfort from pre- to post-course for all studied EPAs. Of the 203 students who participated in the adult medicine track from 2019-2020, 200 (99%) completed both the pre- and post-test knowledge assessments. The mean performance improved from 65.0% to 77.5% (p-value < 0.001). An experiential capstone course for the assessment of EPAs can be effective to improve learner self-assessed ratings of readiness for residency training and acquisition of medical knowledge.

INTRODUCTION: Student-run free clinics (SRFCs) offer medical students a unique opportunity to develop their clinical, diagnostic, and social skills while providing care to medically underserved communities. This study aims to evaluate the value of SRFC involvement on students self-reported confidence in various clinical domains and satisfaction with their medical education. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective pre-post assessment at an urban academic institution among second- to fourth-year medical students. We administered a 25-item questionnaire capturing the scope of clinic involvement and assessing self-reported confidence in multiple clinical domains following a one-year-long participation in student-run free clinics. UnlabelledThe COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the mental health of college students worldwide. As colleges shifted to online instruction, students faced disruptions and increased stressors, leading to a decline in mental health that appears to continue in the postpandemic era. To alleviate this problem, academic institutions have implemented various interventions to address mental health issues; however, many of these interventions focus on a single approach and lack diverse delivery methods. This viewpoint introduces the concept of a multimodal self-care online course, Life101: Mental and Physical Self-Care, and discusses the potential effectiveness of such an intervention in improving students' well-being. The course combines evidence-based interventions and incorporates interactive lectures, workshops, and guest speakers. Pre- and postcourse surveys were conducted over a span of 4 academic terms to evaluate the impact of this course on the well-being and self-care practices of students. The survey data suggest positive outcomes in students taking Life101, including the adoption of healthier habits, reduced stress levels, and increased knowledge and practice of self-care techniques. Life101 represents a novel multimodality intervention to address the epidemic of mental health issues faced by students today. By implementing similar evidence-based multimodal didactic curricula across campuses, academic institutions may be able to better equip students to navigate challenges and promote their overall well-being.

There is increasing interest in understanding potential bias in medical education. We used natural language processing (NLP) to evaluate potential bias in clinical clerkship evaluations. Data from medical evaluations and administrative databases for medical students enrolled in third-year clinical clerkship rotations across two academic years. We collected demographic information of students and faculty evaluators to determine gender/racial concordance (i.e., whether the student and faculty identified with the same demographic). We used a multinomial log-linear model for final clerkship grades, using predictors such as numerical evaluation scores, gender/racial concordance, and sentiment scores of narrative evaluations using the SentimentIntensityAnalyzer tool in Python. 2037 evaluations from 198 students were analyzed. Introduction: Blended learning is a teaching approach that integrates online self-learning and classroom teaching. It emphasizes students' self-directed learning, actively engaging, as well as communication and collaboration. Blended learning develops the qualities in nursing undergraduate students with problem-solving ability, clinical thinking, and communication skills as nurses have. Currently, learners' experience has become an important factor in determining the success of blended learning. Aim: To learn about the experiences and perceptions of undergraduate nursing students regarding blending learning in pediatric nursing. Methods: A mixed methods design beginning with a quantitative data collection and analysis phase to inform the subsequent qualitative phase was utilized. This study was conducted among undergraduate nursing students at one university in China. In the quantitative study phase, a convenience sample of 59 students completed the online survey while the qualitative study phase included nine students recruited by purposive sampling. The qualitative data were collected using individual semistructured in-depth interviews. Audio data were transcribed and subjected to thematic analysis. The findings from those two phases were integrated into the final analysis. Results: The majority (89.8%) of students reported satisfaction with blended learning. Among various teaching methods, case-based learning (CBL) was the most preferred (98.3%). Regarding the qualitative data, students reported positive experiences with blended learning including well-organized course structure, resourceful course content, and high teacher quality. They stated that blended learning improved the learning outcomes such as improving problem-solving ability and developing clinical thinking. They also provided suggestions for achieving better learning outcomes, including providing stressful learning activities, optimizing online course design, and improving the quality of group learning. Conclusions: The blended learning model of pediatric nursing based on the Community of Inquiry framework provides a positive learning experience for nursing undergraduate students. Background: Mentorship is crucial to career advancement, medical education, and psychosocial support, especially for women and minorities. Although anesthesia mentoring programs have shown promise, there are no survey data regarding mentor-mentee relationship dynamics. This study aimed to explore the dynamics of the anesthesia mentor/mentee relationship. Methods: A open cross-sectional web-based survey was distributed by the European Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care and European Society of Regional Anesthesia to European anesthesiologists. Participation was anonymous and consent was obtained. The study evaluated responses relating to preferences, facilitators, and barriers to mentorship relationships along with sociodemographic information. Results: In total, 543 anesthesiologists responded to the survey, and 406 (111 mentees, 49 mentors, 193 both, 53 neither) responded to questions regarding mentorship. 184 anesthesiologists identified as woman and 22 as other genders (non-binary, transgender, gender-fluid, and self-described gender). Moreover, 250 anesthesiologists identified as white. Both mentors and mentees indicated that personal compatibility was the most important factor for successful mentorship. Barriers to mentorship included time consumption and perceived lack of interest from the mentor and mentee. Both mentors and mentees benefited from this relationship. The former reported feeling helpful, and the latter supported the development of clinical skills. The mentors indicated that their participation was important for protecting against burnout/exhaustion and impostor syndrome. Participants reported a preference for mentorship programs organized at the departmental level, offered at the start of the anesthesiology education curricula. Women were more likely to feel a 'lack of interest' in mentoring them as a barrier (OR = 2.49, P = 0.033). Gender was a barrier for mentors of other genders (OR = 23.9, P = 0.0027) and ethnicity (OR = 48.0, P = 0.0023). White mentees found gender (OR = 0.14, P = 0.021) and ethnicity (OR = 0.11, P = 0.048) to be less important barriers to successful mentorship relationship. Conclusion: When possible, programs should prioritize matching mentors and mentees based on personal compatibility and experience in the mentee's area of interest. Addressing the perceived lack of interest in mentoring is essential for promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion within anesthesiology, as well as and uplifting women and minorities.
