Economic growth characterizes the quantitative changes that occur in economic variables and attributed to overall increase in production per capital. This study examined the economic impact of exchange rate, foreign direct investment, inflation rate and the trade balance on Nigeria GDP over the period of 1970-2022. The dynamic causal association among the selected macroeconomic variables and economic growth in Nigeria was evaluated via the implementation of vector error correction model (VECM) procedures and impulse response functions. The VECM estimates and the impulse response shows that the response of GDP to inflation and exchange rates is positive while the response of GDP to a one period shock to the trade balance yields a marginal negative depreciation. The result justifies that the place of Exchange rate, Inflation and Trade Balance to Nigeria economic growth cannot be overstated. The results of the work suggest that to promote stable and sustainable economic growth, policy makers should lay more emphasis on encouraging stable and reasonable exchange rate. Also, the work recommends that to promote economic growth and keep inflation low in Nigeria, Anti-inflationary policies should be accompanied to attract foreign investors and frustrate capital fleeing from the country. This paper aims to investigate the impact of innovation on three macroeconomic indicators: GDP, self-employment, and foreign direct investment (FDI). The study analyses a sample of 120 countries using the Global Innovation Index (GII) and its constituent sub-indices and pillars, which provide a holistic evaluation of national innovation. Gross domestic product (GDP) per capita measures a country's economic output, self-employment assesses entrepreneurial activity, and FDI indicates confidence in a country's economic prospects and innovation trends. This study analyzes the data using generalized-linear and panel-corrected standard-error models. The results show that innovation positively influences GDP, domestic institutional framework, local infrastructure, local knowledge and technology, and creative outputs. In contrast, innovation negatively correlates with domestic self-employment, often associated with necessity-driven entrepreneurship. The study concludes that innovation positively affects human resources, research, and creative outputs and has no significant impact on FDI. The findings suggest that a practical regulatory framework, institutional support, domestic human capital, research and development, infrastructure, technology, and creative outputs are essential for a vibrant economy. National innovation policies supporting the GII and its constituent factors can positively affect the economy while reducing self-employment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of this study is to empirically investigate the impact of foreign direct investment on economic growth of Ethiopia by using a time series data for the period 1992–2019. Other explanatory variables like trade openness, human capital, national saving and gross capital formation were incorporated in the model. For the purpose of undertaking the study, Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) econometric model was employed. Moreover, a Toda-Yamamoto Causality test was performed to identify the direction of the causality between economic growth and foreign direct investment. Findings from the study show that, both in the short run and long run, foreign direct investment has a positive and significant impact on economic growth. As an outcome of Toda-Yamamoto Causality test shows, there is a unidirectional causality running from economic growth to foreign direct investment. On the basis of the findings, recommendations are made for the government authorities to expand infrastructural facilities for enabling a free movement of the investors to the remote and marginalized areas to further expand investment activities that result in higher economic growth. This paper investigates the impact of mining foreign direct investment on economic growth in Ghana using quarterly time series data from 1996–2015. The study employs the Autoregressive Distributed Lag bounds testing approach to cointegration and the error correction model to investigate the existence of a long-run and short-run equilibrium relationship between foreign direct investment into the mining sector and economic growth. The study established that foreign direct investment into the mining sector hurts economic growth in Ghana in the long run but a positive in the short run. The study also finds that private sector credit, capital stock, government spending, and labour participation rate have a statistically significant positive relationship with economic growth in the long run. Trade openness exhibited a statistically significant negative long-run relationship with economic growth, while inflation had a positive but insignificant impact on economic growth for the study period. The study recommends that government should encourage research and development in the mining sector and align mining and other environmental policies to ensure sustainable growth. International remittances remained one major source of international financial resources in the world. Yet very limited empirical studies exist on the impact of these remittances on economic growth, more especially in Ghana. To bridge this void in literature, the study analyzes the impact of remittances on GDP growth in Ghana from 1990 to 2020. The ARDL estimation technique was used to test the long-run association between the selected variables. The results showed that GDP growth rate has a long-run relationship with remittance inflows, foreign direct investment, unemployment rate, inflation, trade, population growth rate and official development assistance. Lastly, the mediating effect of unemployment on remittance inflows negatively affects GDP growth rate in both runs. It is therefore recommended that to ensure sustained GDP growth rate in Ghana, government should consider tapping into the contribution of remittances by ensuring reliable transfer means and cutting down the cost of transfer. This paper analyzes the contribution of foreign direct investment (FDI) to economic growth in Côte d'Ivoire, for the period 1980–2019. We use the World Development Indicators (World Bank) database. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) cointegration approach results show that, in the short and long-run, FDI negatively impacts economic growth in Côte d'Ivoire. We conjecture that these results are due to the predominance of extractive FDI in Côte d'Ivoire. Indeed, the extractive sector is weakly linked to the national economy and is subject to practices of fraud and corruption. Our results also show the importance of education (human capital) in the country's economic growth. All of these findings suggest the need for selective FDI attraction policies, the integration of the enclave extractive sector into the national economy and the strengthening of the education system for a more efficient human capital capable of absorbing and using new knowledge and high technologies transferred by FDI. Continuous improvement of the business environment is important for countries seeking to benefit from increased trade and investment through regional integration. Creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive and expand has become a new concept in international development organizations, and a good business climate allows good ideas to take root, which leads to the creation of jobs and better lives for host countries. The main objective of this study was to investigate the impact of business regulations on FDI inflow and economic growth in East Africa region using data collected from the World Bank spanning from 2010–2019. The study finds that dealing with construction, enforcing contracts, getting credit, getting electricity, paying tax and protecting minority investors have a significant impact on FDI inflow in the region. While enforcing contracts, getting credit, protecting minority investors, resolving insolvency, starting a business and trade across borders have a significant impact on economic growth in the region. Moreover, each additional reform during 2010–2019 is associated, on average, with a 3.09% increase in FDI inflows and 2.24% increase in GDP in East African countries. The findings of this study will help policy makers in the region to establish a strong legal framework of business regulations to attract FDI inflow into their economies, to adjust their ease of doing business procedures to attract FDI to their economies and to promote regional economic growth. This paper analyses the gender-, age- and educational attainment level-specific output–employment relationship and its dependence on foreign direct investment (FDI). The unbalanced panel covers 25 European Union countries' data from 2000 to 2020. Empirical estimations are made using the pooled OLS estimator. The impact of FDI on gender-, age- and educational attainment level-specific output–employment elasticities is estimated by including the multiplicative terms between gross domestic product (GDP) and FDI in regression models. The main results indicate the positive impact of economic growth on employment, with the highest output–employment elasticities for males and youth regardless of gender. The estimation results also indicate limited abilities of economic growth to increase the employment of highly educated people and females older than 25 years regardless of their educational attainment level. Our results suggest that higher FDI level in the host countries is mostly associated with the decreasing employment reaction to economic growth. Although FDI is an important factor affecting the output–employment relationship, it does not help to solve the problem of unemployment in the EU, especially for youth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper analyses the intensity of the influence of foreign direct investments, exports of goods and services, and research and development expenditure on GDP growth of developed and developing countries. Panel regression analysis determined that the exports of goods and services make the largest contribution to growth on middle levels of income. In fact, the contribution the export of goods and services makes to growth on middle levels of income is two times larger than in countries with a high GDP. The most essential impact on countries with a high GDP level was made by research and development expenditure, which is 3.5 times larger than its impact on the developing Balkan countries. The phenomenon of the Middle-Income Trap can be explained by insufficient research and development expenditure. Foreign direct investments are not statistically significant for the GDP growth of observed countries, but they achieve far better results on low development levels. The purpose of this research is to estimate the dynamic impacts of foreign direct investments (FDI) and exports on economic growth in Peru (1970–2020) using annual series. Starting with the theoretical Mundell–Fleming static model with assumptions, we find that the change in exports does not affect GDP, and the effect of FDI on GDP can be positive or negative depending on the comparison between the slopes of the IS and LM curves. The variables are foreign direct investment net flow (% of GDP), exports of goods and services (% of GDP), and GDP growth rate (%). FDI and exports constitute first-order integrated processes; meanwhile, the GDP growth rate is a stationary process. The Granger causality evidences feedback between GDP and exports and the FDI-led growth hypothesis. Considering the dependent variable GDP growth rate, the autoregressive distributed lag cointegration bound test shows the findings regarding the cointegration consist of positive long-term equilibrium impacts from exports and FDI on GDP. Estimating an error correction model, in the short-term, the FDI explains to GDP and the exports have an insignificant impact on economic growth in Peru. This paper empirically examines how financial sector development affects the FDIeconomic growth nexus in Guyana. The novelty is that we examine the relationship in a poor, Small Island Developing State (SIDS) with an underdeveloped financial sector, and where the bulk of FDI flows to the extractive sector. Using annual data from 1981 to 2014, and, both a VECM and ARDL framework that distinguishes among long-run and short-run causal impacts, we provide new insights on why FDI may have a smaller impact on economic growth in SIDS or resource-rich countries. Specifically, we find that FDI dampens long-run growth in Guyana, which is consistent with the extractive literature, but through interaction with the financial sector, FDI has a positive offsetting effect at all levels of financial development in the period under study. While our findings have several nuanced policy implications on how to maximize the developmental potential of FDI in Guyana, they may be relevant to other SIDS or resource-rich countries. Purpose - Tourism and FDI have contributed to a large extent to Central and Eastern European economies in recent decades. This paper investigates how successfully these two engines of growth have been stimulating the growth of these economies. Design/methodology/approach - Using a Pooled Mean Group estimation, this study investigates the short- and long-term effects of variations in the GDP shares of tourism and foreign investments on the economic growth rate. Findings - The results suggest that while tourism expansion is more effective in the short run, FDI has a significant positive impact on economic growth only in the long run. Originality - A new aspect of the present study is a comparison of the magnitude of the impacts of the GDP shares of international tourism and foreign investments on the economic growth rate in both the short and long run in the case of Central and Eastern Europe. This research aimed to identify and evaluate the impact of some macroeconomic components on economic growth performance. The data applied in the analysis were secondary data, including six countries from 2005 to 2020. The econometric approach applied was the fixed effect regression approach to economic growth as a dependent variable. The study also applied several diagnostic tests and the Hausman test to select between fixed and random effects. The data provided after the analysis show that inflation and foreign direct investment have a significant positive impact, while public debt has a significant negative impact. Moreover, unemployment and population growth have shown statistically insignificant results. The study from the aspect of the original contribution provides arguments and applies two variables that are very little addressed in the context of economic growth. This paper investigates the moderating role institutional quality plays in foreign direct investment led growth hypothesis in Nigeria from 1984 to 2018 using autoregressive distributed lag estimation technique. Specifically, the study contributes to the literature by using seven different institutional indicators to moderate the effect of foreign direct investment on economic growth. The findings reveal that foreign direct investment has no direct (positive) effect on economic growth in Nigeria. However, the interactive effect of institutional indicators with foreign direct investment has significant impact on economic growth in most of the models. This implies that institutions serve as important absorptive capacity that needs to be strengthened for the country to benefit maximally from the growth effect of foreign direct investment. This paper explores the advantages of international trade and foreign direct investment (FDI), which can be the main factors of transferring technology to economies. More specifically, it seeks the importance of international trade and FDI as the main channels of technology transfer between countries either in a region or at the international level. In this context, relevant spillovers arising from trade and FDI play important roles in achieving economic growth, capital accumulation and economic well-being, providing a path for sustainable development. The main goal of this paper is thus to investigate the possible implementation of regional economic through cooperation in trade and investment in a region such as the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO). Accordingly, the country members can benefit from spillover effects on their economic growth, as a major factor to appoint sustainable development. The relevant methodology relies on estimation of a panel economic growth model in which we have used the obtained empirical results to assess the effects of trade and FDI spillovers on economic growth over the period 1995–2018. The empirical results have indicated significantly positive effects of the spillovers on economic growth of the ECO country members, as the case study, implying sustainable growth in the long run. Since 1991 Foreign Direct Investment(FDI) has been continuously contributing towards the economic development of Indian economy. On the basis of various literature review it can be said that foreign direct investment contributes positively towards growth domestic product(GDP) growth and employment generation in the developing countries like India. Therefore, the present study is conducted to analyse the role of the foreign direct investment on the economic growth of India for the sample period 1992 to 2019. In the study the economic growth is represented by the variables like gross domestic product(GDP) and employment generation in Indian for the time period 1992-2019. For the study various econometric tools like Augmented Dickey-Fuller(ADF) unit root test, Granger Causality test, Ordenary Least Square(OLS) regression method, Johansen Cointegration test and Error Correction test are applied. The ADF unit root test reflects that all three variables i.e GDP, FDP, and employment are stationary at 1st difference I(1). The result of Granger causality test between Foreign Direct Investment and Gross Domestic Product shows unidirectional causality from economic growth to foreign direct investment in India. But The Granger Causality test shows no casual relationship between foreign direct investment and employment generation. The OLS regression analysis shows a positive relationship between FDI and GDP in India with R square value 0.886177. But the relationship between FDI and number of employment generation is not significant as it has the P value 0.3559. Johansen Cointrgration Test shows a long run positive relation among GDP, FDI and employment generation as both trace statistic and eigen value statistic reject the null hypothesis at 5% level of significance. The result of Error Correction Model(ECM) shows that the speed of adjustment among the variables toward long run is 25.5 percent per year. As FDI has positive impact on the economic growth in India so the government of India should take various policies to attract the foreign investors to India and Increase the FDI inflows. The foreign and domestic investments have a significant contribution towards economic development for developing and developed economies especially for underdeveloped economies. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the causal connection between domestic and foreign private investment along with its impact on economic growth of Pakistan. Moreover, time-series data has been used from 1980 to 2017 and autoregressive distributed lags (ARDL) method is implied for the data analysis perspective. The long-run findings indicate that foreign private investment has a negative and insignificant impact on economic growth, whereas, domestic investment shows a statistical significance but positive impact on Pakistan economy. The short-run dynamic designates that both domestic and foreign private investment is significantly and positively associated with the growth rate. Whereas, error correction term (ECT) is correcting the disequilibrium of data 42.7% on annual basis. Finally, F-test shows that the overall model of this study is statistically significant. This paper examines the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows on host country's economic growth for a group of 45 developing countries for the period 1990–2014. Using the pooled mean group (PMG) regression method, we estimate the long-run and the short-run impact of FDI inflows on growth rate of GDP per capita. The PMG regression results suggest that the growth rate of GDP per capita and its covariates are cointegrated, implying the presence of a long-run equilibrium relationship among the variables. Our results suggest that FDI inflows have significant positive impact on economic growth of the recipient countries both in the long-run and in the short-run. We find that the long-run effect of FDI inflows on economic growth is higher in the emerging market economies as compared to the non-emerging market economies. This paper investigates the dynamic linkages between different types of foreign direct investment (FDI), domestic investment and economic growth in Vietnam. We decompose the aggregated FDI level into its two major components: greenfield investments, and cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As). The empirical results reveal that greenfield investments and cross-border M&As exhibit different impacts on economic growth. While greenfield investments appear to complement domestic investment, which subsequently promotes long-run economic growth, cross-border M&As exert a significant crowd-out effect and subsequently impede growth in both the short- and the long-run. The overall aim of this research is to observe the impact of fiscal deficit on economic growth in the transition economies of South-eastern Europe. The fixed-effects and dynamic linear regression were used to carry out this revision. The data used in this revision are quantitative data annually and cover the period 2005-2019. The outcomes detect that there is a confident and statistically important effect among the fiscal deficit and economic growth for the transition economies of Southeast Europe, supporting the Keynesian theory. Furthermore, the outcomes of this research show that public debt to GDP, foreign direct investment in GDP, exports, and imports in GDP have an important effect on economic growth. Findings have shown that public debt and imports have a positive influence on economic growth, unlike exports and foreign direct investment, which showed an adverse effect on economic growth. Moreover, for other additional factors, the inflation rate, the employment rate, and the real interest rate, the results of the study do not show any significant consequences on economic growth. According to recent trends, there is a focus on the interest in the Western Balkan economies to attract foreign capital in the form of foreign direct investment (FDI) as a source of external financing and economic recovery factor. In this paper, an attempt is made to analyze the movement and impact of FDI on economic growth and foreign trade on the example of the Western Balkans (North Macedonia, Albania, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro). This analysis aims to examine the correlation and causal relationship between FDI, economic growth and the foreign trade case of each individual Western Balkan country. The inflow of foreign capital in the form of FDI in the Western Balkan countries has a positive impact on GDP growth, exports and imports. From the results, it can be concluded that the inflow of FDI into the Western Balkan countries has a positive effect on the economic growth and the increase of foreign trade. The analysis showed that FDI has a statistically significant and positive impact on GDP in the Western Balkan countries, and is a key precondition for intensifying foreign trade. In terms of globalization of the world economy, the open economy of a country participating in the globalization process becomes an organic element of the world economy and thus receives additional incentives for development. International flows of goods and capital allow countries to get new sources for economic growth. Economic growth is now not only a function of internal but also of external factors. It is they who now determine the modernization tendencies of national economic policies, forcing them to move in accordance with world trends. The purpose of the research is to assess the relationship between economic growth of the country and external factors of its economic development, as well as to identify the dependency between external factors in order to clarify their role in the modernization of national economy. With this aim, the analysis of the main parameters of openness of Ukraine’s economy is carried out, as of external factors that influence on the national economic development, changes in the traditional production function under the influence of introduction in it of external factors of development, the estimated indicators of the named influences are modeled. The novelty of the research is the identification of dependency between the forms of openness of the economy and economic growth, the development of a model of relationship between the forms of openness of the economy. Research method. The study is based on a set of economic and economic-mathematical methods that are needed to identify the influence of external factors on the national economy, especially methods of abstraction, systematic and structural-comparative analysis, synthesis and modeling of economic processes. Among the models used in the research is a multifactor regression model. The empirical basis was the materials of official statistics of Ukraine for 1999—2019. The results of research showed: the role of globalization of Ukraine’s economy in its economic development, the importance of FDI as an external factor of economic development, the strong link between international capital flows and international flows of goods into the Ukrainian economy, the positive impact of the latter on the former. Due to the high-quality development of the Chinese economy, the improvement of environmental efficiency in Chinese industries has become a significant task. Understanding the environmental efficiency of the logistics industry is essential for implementing effective environmental policies. This study aims to explore the impacts of economic growth, foreign direct investment (FDI), and innovation on the environmental efficiency of the logistics industry. In this paper, we apply the undesirable SBM model to calculate the environmental efficiency of the logistics industry and use the Tobit model to analyze the impacts of economic growth, foreign direct investment (FDI), and innovation on the environmental efficiency of the logistics industry in provinces along the Belt and Road in China from 2009 to 2018. Based on the results indicate the average environmental efficiency of the logistics industry in Chinese provinces along the Belt and Road is 0.7880, indicating that the environmental efficiency of the logistics industry was generally low in some regions along the belt and road. Innovation and FDI were found have a significant impact on the environmental efficiency, while economic growth fails to significantly impact on the environmental efficiency of the logistics industry in provinces along the Belt and Road. Therefore, we should encourage improvement of the level of environmental efficiency of the logistics industry. It is necessary to realize the co-ordinated development of the logistics industry and the environment through optimization of the development of innovation and transforming the FDI model in provinces along the Belt and Road. Any resource channeled into security has a trade-off effect, as it denies other sectors of the economy the needed resources that could be employed to enhance economic growth and welfare of the citizenry. This study examined the possible impacts of internal security expenditure on economic growth in Nigeria. Employing Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) estimating technique, the study estimated both the short-run and the long-run interactions between the chosen variables. The estimated result found internal security to be positively and significantly related to economic growth in the shortrun but exhibits a negative and significant relationship with economic growth in the long-run. The result also revealed a negative and significant relationship between foreign direct investment and economic growth. Finally, the test for structural breaks found evidence for five breakpoints which interestingly corresponded with the periods of some structural and government policy changes in Nigeria. It is therefore recommended that resources to be channeled on security should be considered cautiously as not to adversely affect economic growth. The correlation between savings and economic growth has been the subject of research for some well-known economists. This study provides further insight on such correlation by examining the case of Kosovo from both a qualitative and quantitative research methodology. The data used was from 2010 to 2017 and has been analyzed using the augmented Dickey-Fuller tests, Johansen cointegration tests, and Ganger causality test. The test of the unit root confirms stationarity, and the regression results showed that deposits have a significant positive impact on Kosovo's economic growth, because savings stimulate investment, production, and employment and consequently generate greater sustainable economic growth. Furthermore, loans and remittances also help boost the economy of Kosovo through their direct impact on investment. This paper confirms that countries whose national savings rate is high are not dependent on foreign direct investment; consequently, the risk arising from volatile foreign direct investment decreases significantly. The objective of this paper is to investigate the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth and productivity in sectors of the Visegrad Group one decade after their accession to the EU. In order to account for sample heterogeneity, as well as productivity differences, we construct a generalized true random-effects model with varying efficiency distribution. We find that FDI has a positive impact on the Visegrad Group's sectors and that its effectiveness depends upon the technological gap between the host and home economy. There are three sources of this positive impact: (i) sectoral output and labour productivity growth, (ii) more effective use of input factors, and via (iii) higher efficiency component of the total factor productivity (TFP). These sources form a three-way transmission mechanism through which FDI can impact economic growth conditioned upon FDI effectiveness due to the technological gap. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the impact of economic growth along with taxes, technology, trade openness and exchange rate on the sustainability of foreign private investment (FPI) in Pakistan. This study uses random effects and generalized least squares estimators and contains data set starting from 1996 to 2017. The results indicate that the Pakistan economy has vastly positive influenced regarding the location and choice of emerging and developed countries' investment in the domestic market. Furthermore, emerging and developed economies investment increases the contribution among domestic firms to the national economy. The results, which are consistent across models, indicate that Pakistan's economy is more likely to receive FPI from emerging and developed economies, but the relative intensity of local government efforts, regardless of economic size. Foreign direct investment (FDI) as a driver of growth is important in today's globalized economy. It is extremely difficult for economies to grow sustainably without economic interactions outside their borders. However, there has been a debate on the impact of FDI inflow on economic expansion. Hence, this study investigated the influence of FDI on economic growth for a selection of 200 economies around the world for the period 1990-2018. We subdivided the sample into World Bank income group clusters to aid comparison across income blocs. The study employed panel estimation techniques including pooled ordinary least squares (POLS), dynamic panel estimation with fixed-effects and random-effects and generalized method of moments (GMM). The study found that FDI, debt stock and official development assistance are promoters of growth in the selected countries--although debt stock weakly impacts economic growth. In contrast, trade openness and exchange rates had a mixed (negative and positive) influence on economic growth. The study suggests that the creation of a conducive business environment and economic policies will attract FDI inflows. Additionally, borrowing from external sources could be minimized despite its perceived positive influence on growth to achieve financial independence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For the past few decades, remittances, as a veritable source of foreign capital flow, have impacted the economies of many less developed countries through various channels as recorded in extant literature. However, these flows have been characterized by wide fluctuations occasioned largely by economic downturns in migrants host countries with attendant consequences on recipient countries. Thus, this study seeks to investigate the impact of such volatilities in remittances on inclusive growth within the Nigerian context, using the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Square (FMOLS) for the period 2000 to 2018. The result shows that remittance-led economic growth hypothesis was not confirmed, as fluctuations in remittances inflow had negative impact on economic growth. Conversely, the study however confirmed the health-led growth hypothesis as the healthoriented official development assistance impacted positively on economic growth. The study therefore recommends the implementation of relevant policies aimed at mitigating the volatilities in remittances inflow as well as improving on the administration and management of such health aid. Foreign direct investment (FDI) represents one of the ways to finance any economy. In this study I approached the theme trying to reveal the strucure and role of the foreign direct investment in Romania and also the impact on economic growt . Using interpretations, correlations and analytical methods I drew conclusions on the categories of foreign direct investment, net foreign investment flow, economic growth. I also analyzed the relationship between FDI and GDP as one of the main macroeconomic indicators of the result, highlighting the percentage and trends of FDI in GDP in Romania between 1990 and 2019. I concluded and revealed the directions where foreign direct investment is needed in Romania in order to have an economic growth and also to support a sustainable development of our country. In the context of the goal of "carbon neutrality", an economic development model that achieves emission reduction goals and ensures stable economic growth is currently being advocated by China. Based on provincial panel data in China from 2005 to 2016, we analyse the impact of economic growth target (EGT) constraints on environmental pollution using a spatial econometric method. The results indicate that EGT constraints significantly exacerbate environmental pollution in local regions and adjacent areas. Local governments are motivated to achieve economic growth goals at the expense of the ecological environment. The positive effects are attributed to a reduction in environmental regulation (ER), industrial structure upgrading and technological innovation and an increase in foreign direct investment (FDI). Moreover, environmental decentralization (ED) plays a positive regulatory role and can weaken the adverse influences of EGT constraints on environmental pollution. Interestingly, the nonlinear impact of EGT constraints on environmental pollution relies on different types of ED. Environmental administration decentralization (EDA) and environmental supervision decentralization (EDS) can reduce the positive effect of EGT constraints on environmental pollution, while an improvement in environmental monitoring decentralization (EDM) can increase the promoting influences of the constraints of economic growth goals on environmental pollution. The above conclusions still hold under a series of robustness tests. Based on the above findings, we suggest that local governments set scientific growth targets, establish scientific assessment indicators for officials, and optimize the ED management institution.
