The paper analyses how changes in GDP in China, the USA, the EU15 and the USSR/Russia over a period of 50 years (1961-2011) were affected by change of intensive factors and change of extensive factors. Intensive factors consist primarily of technological progress. Extensive factors are the amounts of labour and capital. Th e analysis does not use growth accounting, but instead works with the 'dynamic parameters' of intensity and extensity. Contrary to the values of growth accounting, these parameters can be calculated not only for situations of GDP growth, but also for situations of GDP contraction and stagnation. They thus provide a complete picture of GDP development. Th e paper briefly explains the methodology for deriving the parameters. Their values for each territory are then analysed. Th e results show that the parameters are able to describe the real development of GDP and their information value is very high. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Globalisation has led to a rapid increase in the growth of foreign direct investment (FDI) globally. Over the last decade China has become the largest recipient of FDI whilst simultaneously increasing its outward FDI dramatically. The growth in China''s outward FDI has attracted little attention from scholars in mainstream research publications. The motivation behind this paper is to investigate the factors driving this growth from both economic and strategic backgrounds. The paper employs panel data analysis covering the period 2003–2009 where we quantify the main drivers of China''s outward FDI across a range of variables including bi lateral and multi lateral trade, market size, GDP growth, openness and resource endowment. The article examines the sources of China's rapid economic growth since the introduction of free market reforms in 1978 and the effects of this growth on China's gross domestic product (GDP). The wide disparities in growth and productivity between different regions of the country are described. Particular attention is paid to China's coastal region, which is more technologically advanced than the rest of the country. The article asks questions relative to growth of the coastal region compared to other regions in China and the global economy. The article addresses these catch-up questions within China and within the global economy and speculates as to what institutional and political reforms will directly bear on China's ability to close its international and internal productivity gaps.

This article presents an in-depth study of the regional dualistic growth pattern of the Chinese economy from 1984 to 1993. After opening up its economy to the rest of the world in 1979, China has been able to double its gross domestic product (GDP) twice by 1994, with an average annual real growth rate of 10.5%. However, Chinese economic growth has been uneven as is evident from disparate growth rates especially between the Eastern (coastal) and the Western (far inland) regions of the country. The imbalance in economic growth between the two regions has been exacerbated since China further opened the coastal region in 1984. For instance, the economic growth rate of the Eastern region was 11.4% on average from 1984 to 1993, while it was 8.9% for the Western region. This led to an increased economic gap between the two regions. In 1993 the GDP per capita of the Eastern region was 2.3 times as much as that of the Western region. The economic disparity between the two regions can be attributed to many factors, such as economic reforms and an open-door policy in favour of the Eastern region, differences in economic structures and resource conditions, a coast-orientated regional policy, and consequently differential impacts of foreign trade and foreign investment. The uneven growth and resulting increased interregional economic disparity in China have become a new focus for development economists and policy makers. Several studies have examined the influence of economic reforms and regional policy on regional economic development in China. Another group of scholars has studied regional impacts of foreign trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) in particular. These scholars have found that the impact of foreign trade and FDI on the economic development of China are different between the Eastern and Western regions.
