One of the main issues in the present and upcoming decades is the improvement of natural resource use efficiencies. The industrial use of water is preferred as a target for the implementation of sustainable models of water management with the purpose of reducing the use of this resource and generates less waste. This study aims the application of the Water Source Diagram (WSD) method in paper industry, typology associated to high wastewater generation, as a potential strategy to achieve sustainable industrial processes through wastewater reuse. Operational data from paper industry were provided by previous works. Two scenarios of freshwater consumption were generated to model the system. Both cases showed that the freshwater consumption may be reduced over 30.22%, in relation to the baseline of no reuse. The efficiency of the WSD was also compared to other results reported in the literature. Although economic evaluation has not been addressed in this work, the method could be considered as a strategic tool for decision making. Se prefiere el uso industrial del agua como objetivo para la implementación de modelos sostenibles de gestión del agua con el propósito de reducir el uso de este recurso y generar menos residuos. Este estudio tiene como objetivo la aplicación del método Diagrama de fuente de agua (DFA) en la industria papelera, tipología asociada a alta generación de aguas residuales, como una estrategia potencial para lograr procesos industriales sostenibles a través de la reutilización de aguas residuales. Los datos operativos de la industria del papel fueron proporcionados por trabajos anteriores. Se generaron dos escenarios de consumo de agua dulce para modelar el sistema. Ambos casos mostraron que el consumo de agua dulce puede reducirse más del 30,22%, en relación con la línea de base de no reutilización. La eficiencia del DFA también se comparó con otros resultados reportados en la literatura. Si bien la evaluación económica no se ha abordado en este trabajo, el método podría considerarse como una herramienta estratégica para la toma de decisiones. Um dos principais problemas nas décadas atuais e nas próximas é a melhoria da eficiência do uso dos recursos naturais. O uso industrial da água é preferido como alvo para a implantação de modelos sustentáveis de gestão da água com o objetivo de reduzir o uso desse recurso e gerar menos resíduos. Este estudo visa à aplicação do método Diagrama de Fontes de Água (DFA) na indústria de papel, tipologia associada à alta geração de efluentes, como uma estratégia potencial para alcançar processos industriais sustentáveis por meio do reuso de efluentes. Os dados operacionais da indústria de papel foram fornecidos por trabalhos anteriores. Dois cenários de consumo de água doce foram gerados para modelar o sistema. Ambos os casos mostraram que o consumo de água doce pode ser reduzido em mais de 30,22%, em relação à linha de base de não reutilização. A eficiência do DFA também foi comparada com outros resultados relatados na literatura. Embora a avaliação econômica não tenha sido abordada neste trabalho, o método pode ser considerado uma ferramenta estratégica para a tomada de decisões.

We developed a method to better estimate the carbon stocks of in-use harvested wood products (HWP) by using the Eora multiregional input-output tables to link global HWP production and end uses, compared to existing global-scale studies that focused on semifinished HWP. Using the new method, we allocated global HWP to country-specific end uses, including solid HWP used in (1) construction, (2) furniture production, and (3) other end uses, and as (4) household and sanitary paper and (5) other paper and paper products, while the HWP carbon stocks in these end uses were estimated using the Stock Change Approach. We reported that HWP produced globally contained an annual average of 277.7 teragram carbon in 1992-2015, of which 63.0, 12.6, 76.7, 9.1, and 116.3 teragram carbon were consumed by the above five end uses, respectively. By 2015, the carbon stocks of global in-use HWP produced since 1992 accumulated to 2938 teragrams of carbon, of which the above five HWP end uses accounted for 1489, 268, 890, 0, and 291 teragrams of carbon, respectively. Country-specific HWP production and consumption varied significantly, with the eight leading consuming countries (United States, China, Japan, Canada, Germany, Russia, United Kingdom, and France) accounting for 69% of the global in-use HWP carbon stocks. published

Environmental issues developed rapidly driven by the high impact on environmental damage due to the production process that is not environmentally friendly. The increase of goods and services consumption that are quite high throughout the world has resulted in a reduction in natural resources that have an impact on the environment. Efforts to reduce this impact are the existence of a green consumption policy. In 2006, Indonesia introduced eco-label markers on products that have been produced environmentally friendly. This policy needs to be supported by increasing consumer awareness to buy eco-labeled products. This study purposes to identify factors that influence consumer awareness in purchase eco-labeled paper products. This study uses the Structural Equation Modeling, while data processing uses AMOS software. The results showed that the higher the consumer's concern about the state of the environment would be to increase a proper assessment for the environment (environmental attitude), and ultimately the consumer would consciously consume products that have a minimal impact on the environment (environmentally conscious purchasing behavior). Application for Research Ethics Committee (REC) approval and the conduct of medical research is paper intensive. This retrospective study examined all applications to a single REC in the south of England over one year. It estimated the mass of paper used, comparing the proportional paper consumption of different trial types and during different stages of the research process, quantifying the consumption in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. In 2009, 68 trials were submitted to the REC. Total paper consumption for the REC process and study conduct was 176,150 sheets of A4 paper (879 kg), equivalent to an estimated 11.5 million sheets (88 tonnes, 2,100 trees) a year for the UK; the REC process accounted for 26.4%. REC applica- tions and the conduct of approved trials generate considerable environmental impact through paper consumption contributing to the NHS's carbon footprint. Paper use might be reduced through the implementation of digital technologies and revised research methods, namely changing attitudes in both researchers and ethics committees.

OBJECTIVES: Cigarette price increases reduce smoking prevalence but as a tobacco control policy are undermined by the availability of lower cost alternatives such as hand-rolling tobacco. The aim of this descriptive study is to explore time trends in the price of manufactured cigarettes and hand-rolling tobacco, and in the numbers of people who smoke these products, over recent years in the UK. SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: UK. OUTCOME MEASURES: Trends in the most popular price category (MPPC) data for cigarettes and hand-rolling tobacco from 1983 to 2012 adjusted for inflation using the Retail Price Index, and trends in smoking prevalence and the proportion of smokers using hand-rolling tobacco from 1974 to 2010. RESULTS: After adjustment for inflation, there was an increase in prices of manufactured cigarettes and hand-rolling tobacco between 1983 and 2012. Between 1974 and 2010, the prevalence of smoking fell from 45% to 20%, and the estimated total number of smokers from 25.3 to 12.4 million. However the number of people smoking hand-rolling tobacco increased from 1.4 to 3.2 million, and MPPC cigarette price was strongly correlated with number of people smoking hand-rolling tobacco. CONCLUSIONS: Although the ecological study design precludes conclusions on causality, the association between increases in manufactured cigarette price and the number of people smoking hand-rolling tobacco suggests that the lower cost of smoking hand-rolling tobacco encourages downtrading when cigarette prices rise. The magnitude of this association indicates that the lower cost of hand-rolling tobacco seriously undermines the use of price as a tobacco control measure.

A indústria papeleira, há alguns anos, vem procurando avaliar os efeitos de novas tecnologias no consumo de seus produtos. As estimativas iniciais de queda da demanda no setor de papel e celulose mostraram-se, em grande parte, equivocadas e, com o impulso dado pela própria eletrônica aos meios de transmissão e de reprodução, o que realmente se observou foi um aumento no consumo de papéis. Embora a questão ainda não esteja claramente definida, já é possível identificar regiões e categorias de papéis em que devem ocorrer grandes movimentos de expansão ou de substituição do consumo. Em nível global, a demanda por papel continuará a aumentar nos próximos anos. Todavia, algumas perdas para a mídia eletrônica podem ser esperadas, as quais, mesmo que reduzidas, irão ter impactos na indústria de papel e celulose e, ainda mais diretamente, nas indústrias de publicação, gráfica e de comunicações.
