This special collection of papers had its genesis at the IEEE Computer Society Workshop on Software Testing and Test Documentation held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during December 18-20, 1978. This collection is devoted to selected papers on program testing that were presented at the Workshop. The thrust is towards approaches that can support the heuristic components of testing. There is increasing recognition that it is unlikely there will be a grand theory of testing which will lead to fully automated testing systems. Instead the tester will be called upon to use his intuition and problem-dependent knowledge in a discipline manner to test for a variety of specified error types. But it is crucial that this less ambitious, heuristic activity be nevertheless firmly embedded in an underlying framework which is logical, rigorous and well-understood.

The Allied Social Science Associations is a marketing name for an annual three-day, citywide conference of about 9,000 economists that is organized, managed, and controlled by the American Economic Association (AEA). AEA invites the participation of about 50 additional (i.e., allied) economics-related societies that organize the scholarly content of a portion of the ASSA meetings. It is this broader meeting that operates under the ASSA flag. Although the AEA has met periodically with other social science associations since the 19th century, the current format dates back to the 1960s. The convention rotates among approximately 10 large U.S. cities. A centralized staff at AEA headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee has managed the convention since 1986. This article focuses on the book "History and Research in Child Development. Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development," written by Alice Boardman Smuts and John W. Hagen. This monograph is a pioneer venture, the first publication in which both professional historians and child developmentalists focus on the history of child development and in which historians gear their work to an audience of developmentalists. The monograph is one result of the decision of the U.S. Society for Research in Child Development to make the history of the society, of child development research, of the family, and of childhood the theme of its fiftieth anniversary meeting, held in Detroit, Michigan on April 2 1-24, 1983.

President Useem then introduced the topic of convention development It was moved that the principle of establishing an office of executive secretary, and/or business manager (which would be ad hoc for now) be approved. Such an executive secretary and/or business manager will work on the managerial issues of the society. The resolution was passed. The executive committee will designate an acting executive secretary.

President William D'Antonio called the meeting to order. The minutes of the last council meeting were approved as corrected. There was discussion of the minutes of the executive committee meeting with the officers of the Midwest Sociological Society. There was discussion of the paper competition. The status of the student when the paper is completed will determine which contest it is entered in. This competition may include honors work and special projects as well as papers for courses. The following motion was made and unanimously passed. The editor of Sociological Focus may set up a special account to handle income and the expense of editing the journal. The editor is to give an accounting of this money to the Publications Committee, and this accounting is to be included in the Publications Committee's report to the council. A membership drive will take place utilizing the state chairmen. Reimbursement of mailing costs to the membership committee was authorized.

Based on an address given at the April 1995 INFORMS meeting in Los Angeles, this paper's purpose is to suggest the opportunities that the Pacific Rim will bring to OR/MS and INFORMS. It first looks at the two important needs in the profession: to improve the scope of its communications with the public and to expand the context in which OR/MS work is done. After describing some of the radically unfamiliar and different conditions affecting enterprises on the Pacific Rim and suggesting their important challenges, the paper describes some influences acting to inhibit the free growth of the profession and its contributions to society. It closes by suggesting how meeting the challenges of the Pacific Rim cannot only help solve the problems this new context poses, but also help prepare the profession for its larger international future. This article presents minutes of the annual membership meeting of the American Finance Association held at the New Orleans Marriott Hotel, New Orleans, Louisiana on January 6, 2001. Following brief comments from Executive Secretary and Treasurer David Pyle, the meeting was turned over to President Franklin Allen. Allen announced results of the Association's 2000 election, and noted that Joel Hasbrouck has been appointed to fill the remaining year of departing Director Douglas Diamond's term. In addition, Allen stated that free subscriptions to the "Journal of Finance" would be provided to several dozen academic libraries in developing countries.

The article presents information about plans of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) this year. Two items may be of prime interest in this year's council affairs. The highlight of the annual meeting was a paper by George Homans on the relationship between the social sciences and the humanities. It was generally felt that this session did much to create a better understanding between these two sectors of the academic community. The ACLS Committee on the Secondary Schools has commissioned background papers from scholars in each of the disciplines and areas concerned with the teaching of social studies, and the paper on sociology is being written by Gresham Sykes. Grant and fellowship programs of interest to members of the Association are intended primarily to provide uninterrupted free time for scholarly activity. Travel Grants to international congresses and conferences are presently available only for meetings to be held after July 11, 1962. This article comments on the history and accomplishments of the American Sociological Association. The most astonishing activity of the ASA is an annual production, the extravaganza called the national meetings. In the 1940s and 1950s the national convention was sometimes criticized for being a market fair at which young academics were forced to kowtow to the mighty for jobs, rather than being able to take delight in truly intellectual discourse. Over the decades, the business meetings of the ASA have remained unchanged in one important way. They always have been poorly attended, except for a few times in the late 1960s. This intense apathy is characteristic of a well run learned society. First it shows the good sense of sociologists, for there is little worth capturing at the business meeting. Second, most of the time the Council and the national staff have succeeded in attaining harmony with the vibrations of their constituents, and thus, they often have made entirely independent decisions that pleased the others anyway. Even in the high drama of business meetings in the late 1960s and early 1970s, it should be noted, established sociology was the main target. In response to the sociologist's usual preference for egalitarian policy, the 1960's charges of elitism, and the sheer growth of research money, the number of papers or presentations has grown, certainly faster than the membership.

Professor Harry Johnson of Simmons College and author of "Sociology: Systematic Introduction," discussed the introductory course and its relation to the total undergraduate program.
