This paper examines the impact of data-driven innovation (DDI) on firm performance, based on an exploratory case study of a manufacturing firm in China's textile and apparel industry. It explores the influence of various contextual variables on the firm's DDI and suggests ways to enhance DDI and thereby firm performance. Extending the literature on DDI, the paper proposes and validates a theoretical framework that incorporates the influence of various contextual factors on firms' DDI. The findings show that (1) individual context is associated with DDI; (2) organizational context is associated with DDI; and (3) DDI is associated with firm performance. Due to their higher energy efficiency and better economic performance, distributed energy resource (DER) systems are expected to be one of the main energy supply forms in the future and have gained increasing attention in recent years. Thus, there is a need to boost our understanding of how to apply DER systems in different types of actual cases. This paper investigates a techno-economic analysis of a DER system applied in a real case in a hot-summer and cold-winter zone in China, where the climate is considered to be Cfa according to the Köppen–Geiger climate classification system. An urban underground transportation infrastructure system located in Changsha (China) was chosen to analyze the techno-economic performance of a natural-gas-fired DER system in comparison with a centralized energy system (CES). First, a scientific and reasonable application program of the natural-gas-fired DER system was developed by an overall load analysis (electric load, air-conditioner load, and domestic hot water load during the operating period). Based on this load analysis, this research combined the energy consumption and the actual operating situation and then compared and analyzed different types and capacities of equipment in this case. Moreover, a comprehensive analysis of the economic benefits was estimated by comparing the natural-gas-fired DER system with conventional CESs. Overall, the total annual cost of the DER system was reduced by 18.73%, and its additional investment can be paid back within about 2.2 years. A better economic benefit was achieved by applying the natural-gas-fired DER system in an actual case, which will help encourage the widespread application of DER systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose – This paper aims to examine the global competitiveness of an emerging market multinational (EMM) from China through the case of a major European acquisition, in Italy, in the heavy construction industry. Country- and firm-specific factors are considered. Horizontal integration in this oligopolistic industry changes the industry dynamics, with significant implications for its players. Design/methodology/approach – The paper follows case study methodology and triangulates data through a literature review, an examination of available company data and interviews of key personnel. Firm- and country-specific factors, both advantages and disadvantages, including the business environment in the construction industry, globally and regionally, are analyzed. Findings – The paper identifies several key success factors at the firm level, including the integration of research and development, marketing and sales; the development of extensive communication and trust among the managers of both companies; the exploitation of the Chinese market as a source of demand; and the shifting of selected production lines to the Chinese market. Research limitations/implications – The traditional models of country-specific advantages/disadvantages and firm-specific advantages/disadvantages are augmented by examining the host market and industry task environments. Host country-specific factors for successful integration include favorable local conditions, both in terms of endowments and institutions, and an industrial cluster with supporting firms and services. Practical implications – Following the case study, managers can refer to the key success factors to emulate “best practices”. The paper concludes with a heuristic developed by the Chairman of Zoomlinon, Chunxin Zhan, underlining five principles for a successful EEM acquisition: understanding, sharing, responsibility, compliance and coordination. Management consulting (MC) has been heavily involved in emerging business opportunities in mainland China. However, there are no well-known local MC project management models to help evaluate whether an MC project can be successful or not. This paper reports a model for the self-assessment of management consulting projects, which has been validated by 15 experts and 13 cases. The new model, with seven factors that are critical to the success of MC projects, was developed from a literature review. The model was then verified by developing a questionnaire that was sent to 15 experts and using Dempster–Shafer theory to obtain the weight of each part of the model. The model was applied to 13 real cases to verify its effectiveness in evaluating an MC project. This new MC model can help consulting teams to conduct assessments in the early and middle stages, and evaluate in the late stage, of consulting projects, and also can help teams improve the probability of project success and client satisfaction. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play an increasingly important role in global economic development, and they have encountered many unique problems (such as resources and strategic choice). Strategic management accounting (SMA) techniques can help SMEs allocate limited resources rationally and integrate internal and external information to help managers make strategic decisions. However, how and what is the SMA applied in the reality of SMEs, especially in developing countries today. This paper aims to explore the extent to which SMEs of developing countries use SMA. This article used the qualitative research method and the data were collected by interviewing five managers and two employees in M company. The findings indicated that: (1) The senior managers of SMEs do not have an understanding of accounting nor pay enough attention to it, and the role of SMA is even worse; (2) Although the chief financial officers obtain the knowledge of SMA, they cannot fully involve it in their strategic decision making. (3) SMEs have realized that enterprise culture is very important for a company to achieve strategic goals, but it is far from enough to attach importance to and create it. Trade analysis for open economies is strategically important. Even though Hungarian trade relations are oriented towards the EU, the direct and indirect influence of Asia, mainly China, needs special attention. The paper focuses on direct bilateral relations between Hungary and China. The global value chain perspective enables the research to detect inter- and intra-industry dependencies and unfold and compare the industry focuses and dynamics of backward and forward linkages between 2000 and 2018. We used a mixed methodology, combining input-output analysis with company case studies based on a wide range of literature both from Chinese and East-Central European researchers. The findings support the significance of global value chain relations, highlight the restructuring of Hungarian trade relations with China over the past twenty years, and indicate the strong concentration of relations in terms of the number of companies. Based on three case studies of Chinese Internet start‐ups, this study seeks to address the research question: "How is digital entrepreneurship enacted in China?" Our findings reveal that there was a common theme that underpinned the start‐ups we studied, which we termed 'Qinghuai' in the language of the informants we spoke with. In this paper, we explain the roots of the concept and its six constituent elements at the individual, organizational, and ecosystem levels. These elements are then abstracted into two dimensions: (a) spiritual idealism and (b) perpetual development. We argue that Qinghuai as a concept is a product and reflection of the cultural and institutional complexity of contemporary China. Further, we discuss how Qinghuai facilitates digital entrepreneurship across the business, organizational, and technological domains. This explanation is substantiated by data from our three cases and juxtaposed with what has been discussed in the existing digital entrepreneurship literature. Finally, as we present the contributions of our study, we elaborate on (a) how Qinghuai reflects the contemporary context of China; (b) how Qinghuai is instrumental to digital entrepreneurship in China; and (c) how Qinghuai is different from other related concepts including Guanxi, collectivism, collective action and social entrepreneurship. Making requests is one of the most commonplace pragmatic behaviors in daily interactions. This present paper attempts to specifically examine the use of second language (L2) request strategies by a single English major in China. By providing four different role-play scenarios in which relative power (+/-P) and social distance (+/-D) were deliberately designed as the contextual constraints, while low ranking of imposition (-R) was kept constant, this case study elicited and audio-recorded the participant's conversational data via WeChat. Drawing upon the coding scheme developed by Blum-Kulka and Olshtain (1984), the study showcased that the participant was inclined to chiefly employ conventionally indirect requests and more external modification devices than internal ones in all the role-plays. In addition, the participant's inappropriate adoption of direct requests in the first and third role-plays and written responses to the followup survey questions suggested that he was not conscious of the contextual variables at all when performing requests. In conclusion, some pedagogical recommendations are proposed to enhance L2 learners' pragmatic competence by integrating pragmatic instruction into English language classes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Digital remote care has emerged as a transformative approach in the delivery of healthcare services. This paper presents an empirical case study that investigates the utilization of digital remote care for postoperative rehabilitation in a relatively large-scale implementation in China. To gather the empirical data, we employed a mixed-methods approach including observations, document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and a participatory workshop. The findings obtained from these diverse sources were documented and analyzed through journey mapping, which provides a holistic view of the process of delivering digital remote care services. Drawing from the journey map, we gain insights into the specific problems faced by health professionals and use this knowledge to identify areas for improvement. Purpose: Learning and development are critical to a business's success. This paper aims to focus on organizational factors at multiple organizational levels that facilitate learning culture in a small- and medium-sized enterprise (SME) in northwestern China. Design/methodology/approach: This study is qualitative in nature. A single case study method is used to explore an SME's organizational factors that facilitate learning culture. Findings: This paper categorizes the organizational factors into seven dimensions: shared vision, creating continuous learning opportunities, informal learning that promotes inquiry and dialogue, collaboration and team learning, knowledge management systems, work–family enrichment and encouragement and support. This paper also compares the findings with learning culture models from Western research. Research limitations/implications: Chinese culture has far-reaching and fundamental effects on many East Asian countries and regions. For SMEs in similar cultural settings with a collectivist orientation, future research may focus on the effect of the work–family enrichment on learning culture. Originality/value: Work–family enrichment was found to be an important factor that influences learning effectiveness in this Chinese small business based on traditional values in Chinese culture. In this paper, we have used the case of build your dream (BYD) to examine firm innovation in the context of China. From a historical perspective, with its strategic diversification from battery to mobile phone manufacturing to automobile manufacturing, we find that BYD has been innovative in its production method, vertical integration strategy, and design of product for local customers. The effective understanding and leveraging of local contextual factors including supply of labor (especially low cost-highly skilled labor), growing middle class, and local industry environments have played important roles in BYD's innovation in China. Drawing on a case study of a three-generation family business, this paper explores the antecedents and consequences of female leadership in contemporary Chinese family business. Our findings suggest that institutional change in contemporary China affects the role of female family members in the family system, which eventually gave rise to female leadership in China’s family businesses. We also propose that in comparison to male leadership, female leadership in Chinese family business is more concerned with balancing work-family conflict; more dependent upon the family’s endowment of resources; and more likely to favor a participative (rather than authoritative) decision-making style. For B2C e-commerce enterprises, it is of great importance to select the third-party logistics (3PL) providers. The paper, focused on the concept of "logistics capability", took full account of the characteristics of B2C e-commerce and its logistics service and referred to the research findings of scholars. As a result, on six dimensions, the evaluation indexes of 3PL providers' logistics capability in the mode of B2C e-commerce were identified. In this paper, we report from research on a digital technology solution for remote care, which consists of a patient monitoring portal for healthcare professionals and a mobile application for patients with a set of integrated measuring devices. The same solution has been implemented in different hospitals in Norway and China, within the scope of a research project called DigiRemote. At the current stage of the project, the focus of the research is placed on uncovering the challenges that have emerged in the implementation process in relatively large-scale pilot studies in Norway and China. We report several issues found during the early stages of the implementation in the two countries. The aim of the research is to understand and improve the implementation and use of a new type of remote care service adapted to different cultural, institutional, and technical contexts. The Geological Strength Index (GSI) is an important parameter for estimating rock mass properties and can be estimated either through direct observations or by using a quantitative GSI chart or equations. This study aims to discuss the applicability of the RMR89 method and the latest version of GSI|2013 by applying them to a case study and to the data published in the earlier papers. The relevant rock mass properties, including blockiness and discontinuity conditions, of the walls of 15 exploratory adits with a total length longer than 1100 m in a hydropower project in China have been assessed to provide data for the analysis. In addition, a repeat analysis of the earlier published data has been conducted to validate the results derived from the case study. The results show that the GSI values calculated with the RMR89 are generally larger than those obtained from the qualitative GSI chart, with an average magnitude of about five. The GSI values predicted from the values of JCond89 and RQD are consistent with those derived through the qualitative observational method for a medium-quality rock mass but are relatively smaller or larger for a poor-quality (i.e., GSI<45) or a high-quality (i.e. GSI>65) rock mass, respectively. By comparing the results of the RMR89 method and the qualitative GSI chart method and analyzing the classification factors considered by the two methods, two new equations based on the RMR89 system have been developed for estimating the GSI. Their application to the case study and the published data prove that these two equations have higher predictive accuracy than the original RMR89 method and the latest version of GSI|2013. Mass customization (MC), which is popular in the fashion industry, is proposed to provide customers with products with a high degree of adaptation and a price comparable to a mass product. Both the manufacturer and customers can benefit from it. However, how to properly apply the MC strategy when facing challenges in the real world needs more exploration. In this paper, we first review the related operations research literature. Then, we conduct a real case study of a fashion company adopting MC in China. We highlight the challenges and critical successful factors for implementing apparel MC. We identify important technologies in fashion MC systems. Purpose: The main purpose of this paper is to investigate how social media can provide important platforms to facilitate organisational learning and innovation in new product development (NPD) process. Design/methodology/approach: Using a multiple case-study approach, this study assesses qualitative data collected via 56 interviews from 13 world-leading Chinese companies in the high-technology industry. Findings: The study identified three distinct types of organisational learning mechanisms for firms to extract potential innovation inherent in social media. It further determined various organisational enablers that facilitate the connections between these mechanisms and NPD performance. Research limitations/implications: This research contributes to the emerging literature on digital product development and organisational learning. The cases were conducted in the Chinese context, hence, the results may not be fully generalisable to other organisations, industries and countries without appropriate re-contextualisation. Practical implications: The empirical evidence showcases the various mechanisms adopted by managers in different NPD phases. It identifies several technological and organisational adaptations that managers can apply to smartly scale their social presence and facilitate NPD. Originality/value: Despite the exponential growth of social media use in identifying and interacting with external stakeholders, managerial practice and academic research have paid little attention to how social media can be leveraged for NPD. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to unveil negative outcomes associated with an absence of guanxi in a buyer–supplier relationship in Chinese logistics industry. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a case study methodology using 16 semi-structured interviews with managers engaged in the process of buying and selling logistics services in China. Findings: Based on the qualitative interviews, managers experience lack of trust, lack of communication flow and reduced business volume when guanxi is absent in a buyer–supplier relationship in the Chinese logistics industry. Research limitations/implications: This study has some limitations. First, the results of this study are not generalizable to a broader population. Second, this study explores behavioral patterns with respect to Chinese business culture only. Practical implications: Firms can use the findings from this study to understand the consequence they can face when guanxi is absent in a buyer–supplier relationship. Originality/value: This study attempts to offer a balanced perspective on the role of guanxi in a buyer–supplier relationship, particularly in the Chinese logistics industry, by considering how an absence of guanxi generates negative outcomes for firms. The purpose of this paper is to (1) discuss the usability of labour condition auditing as a tool, (2) identify main differences between quality and environmental auditing and labour condition auditing and (3) define typical improvement areas in a high technology supply chain in the People's Republic of China (hereafter ‘China’). The increased interest in labour conditions of global supply chains has driven companies to integrate corporate social responsibility (CSR) into supply chain management (SCM) practices. Companies face legal requirements as well as voluntary social requirements. This paper focuses on the empirical part of labour condition auditing at selected factories during 2003 and 2004. Findings from these audits include non-conformances in health and safety, remuneration, working hours and disciplinary practices. Based on the experiences of the case studies, labour condition auditing is seen as a beneficial tool for inducing continuous improvement in supply chain management, but it requires a new set of skills from the auditors. Climate change is causing profound changes in energy and power systems around the world. Although many papers have confirmed the impact of environmental weather on electricity demand, the complex nexus of regional environmental temperature and electricity demand instability remains incomplete, especially neglecting the understanding from the perspectives of multi-quantiles. This paper uses a unique dataset of 15-min the high-frequency grid load situation of Datong, a northern city in China, to construct a comprehensive indicator to measure the regional electricity demand instability. Then, employing the Quantile-on-Quantile approach, this paper evaluates the association between intraday temperature difference and both the composite and multidimensional electric instability indicators. According to the empirical analysis, a larger environmental temperature difference always rises the instability of the electricity demand, which is stronger when both two variables are at higher quantile states. There are heterogeneities among the effects on multi-dimensional indicators of electricity demand instability. Environmental temperature difference provides a negative influence on the load rate, while it will magnify other instability indicators. Furthermore, we also assess the impact of daily extreme temperatures and divide the realized volatility of load into two directions for discussion. The digital twin is considered the central component of modern industry. It has been adopted in many industrial fields. However, its application in nuclear engineering is very rare, especially for the radioactive waste deposits winch is an urgent and tricky issue. Motivated by this demand and considering China's research & development guidelines for geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste (a three-step strategy by 2050 to construct the radioactive waste repository), a framework of the radioactive waste repository digital twin is proposed. The digital twin uses the framework edge + cloud with a multi-layer structure. It can be adopted in the construction of the radioactive waste repository. It can significantly strengthen the management capability, reduce the operating cost, improve the safety level and deal with accidents more efficiently. The first step for the achievement for the digital twin development of radioactive waste repository based on the framework is also introduced in the paper. The proposed digital twin framework of the radioactive waste repository in this work could be widely used as a reference and easily extended to support management in other industrial fields. With the implementation of "The Belt and Road" policy and increasing investment, there will be a large number of large-scaled construction projects (LSCP) in China. However, the comprehensive benefit of most LSCP is not satisfactory because of concerning more about the economic benefits. It makes the sustainability of LSCP concerned about. In order to ensure the sustainable development, the evaluation of the comprehensive benefit of LSCP should be carried out. Based on comprehensive literature review and content analysis, 30 influence factors of comprehensive benefit evaluation for LSCP are identified. The evaluation index system of 17 factors containing three subsystems of social, economic and environmental benefit is established through factor analysis. Entropy method is used to determine weights of each indicator, and then synthetic evaluation model is put up. This paper selects a practical case, Lieder Village reconstruction in Guangzhou, to calculate the synthetic evaluation value using fuzzy theory. The evaluation results are satisfactory and in line with reality. It shows that the evaluation index system and synthetic evaluation model has a certain reference value for analysis of comprehensive benefit and can help for enhancing the construction and management level of LSCP and promoting the sustainable development of LSCP. During the first wave of COVID-19, China demonstrated a strong commitment to epidemic prevention and control. This case study focuses on Z University, which adopted closed management when the epidemic was serious, and examines the influence of COVID-19 on students' psychology and behavior through interviews with 10 students. The research reveals that while students perceive closed management during the epidemic as enhancing safety and promoting learning engagement to some extent, the epidemic also has adverse effects on their physical health, psychology, and social life. These impacts included deteriorating physical health, feelings of rebellion and depression regarding college life, alongside concerns and aspirations regarding future job stability. In the discussion, we suggest that higher education institutions can utilize this information to shape policies and procedures, particularly concerning mental health and risk communication, not only during the current pandemic but also in future emergency or disaster scenarios. Despite a gradual decline in rural population due to urbanization, as of 2022, approximately 35% of China's total population still resides in villages. Over a span of 40 years, carbon emissions from villages have significantly surged, with a sevenfold increase from energy consumption and a 46% rise from agriculture. Consequentially, the development of low-carbon villages is imperative. A comprehensive understanding of the primary sources of carbon emissions in villages is crucial for implementing practical and effective strategies towards low-carbon development. However, limited research has been conducted on quantifying carbon emissions and sinks for Chinese villages. This study aims to address this gap by proposing a methodology for assessing carbon emissions in villages, including the emissions of CO2, CH4 and N2O. Inspired by the IPCC standard methodology for greenhouse gas emissions at national levels and provincial greenhouse gas inventory guidelines customized for China's context incorporating localized characteristics, this approach has been applied to seven villages in Northern China based on field investigations. Employing a range of methods including field surveys, questionnaires, statistical records and big-data platforms, we collected the carbon emission activity levels of the seven villages using the most up-to-date carbon emission factors. Subsequently, the collected data and facts are quantitatively processed to generate results that are compared among the seven villages. These findings are also compared with those from other studies. The analysis indicates that the primary industries in these villages significantly influence the total carbon emissions. Moreover, the study reveals that energy consumption in buildings, agriculture, transportation and waste disposal are the most influential emission sources. These findings provide valuable insights into the carbon emission landscape of villages and can serve as a guide for implementing strategies and policies aimed at promoting low-carbon development in the rural areas of Northern China. To investigate and demonstrate the effectiveness of applications of available environment-friendly technologies in buildings in Hong Kong, a number of eco-building concepts are used on a small building in the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden in Hong Kong including 4 kW photovoltaic-roof, roof rainwater collection system, grass roof design, sunroof for lighting, and double-glazing external walls for better insulation. This paper mainly reports the simulation and data monitoring results of the rainwater collection system and photovoltaic system. The supply and utilization of rainwater for different types of buildings were investigated. The findings such as the supply, the demand of flushing, feasibility, reliability and energy saving of using rainwater are also reported in this paper. The annual energy performance and green house gas emission reduction are presented for the solar PV roof installation. Data monitoring has shown that the performance of both the rainwater collection system and the solar PV system is good and meets the design expectations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose -- The purpose of this paper is to investigate the institutions involved in providing experience to entrepreneurs in China and analyzed the types of experience they provide. Moreover, the abilities of related organizations to shape experience were analyzed. Design/methodology/approach -- By using a multiple case study method, this qualitative study examined various entrepreneurial experience providers (namely incubator, entrepreneurship training institution, franchise store, entrepreneurship training network, and family business experience transfer) to understand the experience types and their supplying competencies. Findings -- On the basis of the types of entrepreneurial experience and the criteria for entrepreneurial competency assessment, the study results showed that the primary providers in China are the Start Your Business (SYB) program, incubators, and family businesses. Furthermore, for-profit social training organizations provided less experience than did governmental or private ones. The five providers mainly provided "know-what" entrepreneurial experience. Among the providers, family businesses and SYB offered experience that was conducive to entrepreneurial learning. Research limitations/implications -- Entrepreneurs are the subjects of entrepreneurship education, while this study mainly focused on analyzing the experience supplying competencies. Thus, future studies should explore the required abilities that are developed during entrepreneurship for various learners. Practical implications -- This study interpreted how to achieve Chinese mass entrepreneurship and innovation strategy in the context of the low development of entrepreneurship higher education. To improve their competencies in providing experience, providers must focus on developing proper curricula, effective transfer methods and teacher resources, and incorporating entrepreneurship education. Originality/value -- On the basis of social learning theory and human capital theory, this study developed a set of criteria for the assessment of the ability of entrepreneurial experience providers. During the last few decades, research and development (R&D) have always been regarded as the most important or even the only factor in the attempt to explain the innovation capability and performance of enterprises, industries and economies, while to a large extent, those heterogeneous innovation activities beyond formal R&D are ignored or underestimated. Some research has shown that non-R&D innovation activities contribute to make full use of resources beyond R&D to promote performance, especially to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with weak R&D capability. However, non-R&D innovators' behavior is still a black box by far, and especially few empirical research have been conducted in China context. This paper first explores the heterogeneous innovation patterns of non-R&D innovation by survey among Chinese SMEs in Zhejiang Province. It shows that, product and service customization, imitation and design, technology adoption and incremental modification, organizational innovation and marketing innovation are the main patterns of non-R&D innovation in China. Then, a case study is followed to cross-validate the patterns and relationships between non-R&D innovation and growth of SMEs in China. Generally, this study has implications for both academia and policy-makers. As it demonstrates, non-R&D innovation is an effective way for SMEs to quickly grow and sustain competitiveness in competition. On the other hand, this study helps to optimize some of current innovation policies for SMEs in China, where policy incentives are mainly R&D-focused. Intersectoral collaboration is important for policy implementation. However, effective collaboration may be difficult to achieve because of poor internal drive to collaborate, disagreements on framing the problem, institutional constraints and poor leadership. This article examines how competitive campaigns stimulate intersectoral collaboration in the context of healthy urban planning. We examine the case of the Creating Hygienic City Campaign in Jingchang, China from 2006 to 2011, illustrating how the city resorted to intersectoral collaboration to achieve the multiple targets and thus improved public and environmental hygiene. The paper argues that a competitive campaign, when well-organized, can overcome some of the barriers to intersectoral collaboration by building a campaign organization team, legitimizing the leadership, and enhancing public awareness and involvement. The article also suggests that the campaign approach in its current form failed to involve local authorities in setting the targets and was unable to sustain certain efforts. In a highly volatile environment, i.e., the bottom of the pyramid (BOP) context, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can develop and adapt their resource bases through partner relations, extending the emerging theorization of dynamic capabilities. We explore the detailed nature and antecedents of these dynamic capabilities based on a multicase study by tracing the development of 6 BOP-oriented SMEs in the pharmaceuticals, animal husbandry, agricultural product processing, and distribution fields. The research was conducted between June 2019 and November 2020. First, our rich qualitative data indicate two distinct types of dynamic capabilities that are pivotal for short-term performance advantage and sustainable competitive advantage. Adaptation dynamic capability relates to activities of resource deployment and renewed operational capability, which is supported by local legitimacy and trust mechanisms, constructed by strong ties with noncommercial partners. Shaping dynamic capability relates to activities of path-creation and innovation capability, which is supported by the heterogeneous information and cost advantages, generated by weak ties with commercial partners. Second, SMEs give priority to the development of adaptation dynamic capability as the basis of shaping dynamic capability, while their sequencing explains how SMEs create, leverage, and enhance them over time. Industry-wide information infrastructures (IIIS) have recently gained increased attention by policy makers, especially in the healthcare sector where it is believed that IIIS can substantially contribute to the taming of exploding healthcare costs and dramatically improve service quality, e.g., by avoiding widespread medication errors. However, the emergence and evolution of IIIS is as yet poorly understood, partly because the information systems (IS) literature traditionally uses much smaller units of analysis such as projects, organizations or small networks of organization. In this paper, we propose a combined company-level and industry-level framework to shed light on the process of IIIS emergence. We demonstrate, for the first time, that IIIS emergence is intricately linked to the industry life cycle for the case of fragmented industries. We also explore the relationship between the industry-level and company-level life cycles in the process of IIIS emergence, and develop a novel proposition regarding this relationship. The large domestic market of China has provided opportunities for Chinese firms to implement successful product innovations based partially on imported technology. This paper analyses the secondary product innovations as redesigning and reconstructing the original product architecture of first movers in order to adapt to the customer needs in the domestic market. We have found that latecomers can implement secondary product innovations for the domestic market in three ways: architecture localisation (adjusting to general local needs), customer-triggered special design (changing to penetrate segments with special needs), and derivative integration (reconstructing/recombining components). Considering those implementation methods, there has been an induction of secondary product innovation stages in Haier washing machines. Abstract: Sustainability is receiving increasing amounts of attention in higher education in terms of how it can best be integrated with university curricula. Sustainability is closely related to complexity, innovation, and interdisciplinarity; therefore, it requires alternative approaches rather than traditional, lecture-based pedagogy. This paper reports an educational initiative and research project based on collaboration between Beijing Normal University, China and Aalborg University, Denmark: developing a sustainability curriculum using the methodology of Problem and Project Based Learning (PBL) in a Chinese context. A theoretical framework is established to understand and analyze the culture's change toward a sustainability curriculum that employs PBL methodology. Empirical work is drawn upon first year results from the implementation of this methodology in an engineering and science curriculum. Data generation is based on multiple collection methods, such as survey of students' feedbacks, interviews with students, and analysis of students' project reports and reflection essays. This paper summarizes that a sustainability curriculum as proposed in this research can attract students' interests in not only mastering relevant knowledge, but also in developing necessary skills and competencies. PBL as a teaching and learning method can successfully facilitate participative learning, critical reflection, systemic thinking, creativity, and cultural awareness, which are the core values of sustainability. However, implementing a new curriculum with new teaching and learning methods can be more complex than expected. Many issues impact the implementation process and are therefore remain challenges to further development; for example, how to change the existing grading system, how to provide both teaching staff and students' with prior knowledge about the new PBL methods, how to gain institutional support, and how to change the broader societal and cultural values. Among the China Seas, the Yellow Sea has the highest occurrence frequency of sea fog that can be categorized into widespread sea fog and coastal sea fog. In this paper, we study a typical coastal sea fog along the Shandong Peninsula that is accompanied by sea-land breezes. Based on a series of numerical experiments conducted by the Weather Research and Forecasting model with high spatial resolution, the impacts of the sea–land breezes on the formation and development of sea fog are investigated in detail. The land breeze can act as an accelerator that enhances humidification and cooling near the coast which promotes sea fog formation during the nighttime, resulting from nearshore vapor convergence and offshore cool-air transportation jointly by the descending branch and low-level breeze of the land breeze circulation. During the daytime, the sea breeze acts as a reducer that inhibits sea fog development, including the contraction of fog area caused by onshore advection of the sea breeze on cloud liquid water, and the restraint of fog vertical growth due to warming and drying by the descending branch of the sea breeze circulation. In this paper we study the risks around IT outsourcing in Chinese financial institutions. We build a framework that explains the conduction paths from risk factors to risks, and from risks to resulting losses. Our framework describes relationships among 8 risk factors, 7 risks and 4 kinds of losses. Through case study we find that the main risk factors faced by Chinese financial institutions during IT outsourcing include limited IT literacy, limited choices of contractors, cultural conflict and objective misalignment with the contractors. China today is experiencing a time when housing is needed more than ever and one approach satisfying this need is by industrialization – a streamlined process aimed at generating profits and promoting energy efficiency in the housing sectors. Although large housing programs have been completed in China, few housing projects have been built in an industrialized manner. One contributing factor is that industrialization is not omnipotent and, just as a coin has two sides, not all the outcomes of industrialization are beneficial. In this paper, a preliminary assessment is made of these two sides – the benefits and hindrances of industrialized housing in China – by literature review and survey. Case studies are used to verify the questionnaire survey results and from which the advantages and disadvantages involved are compared. The findings indicate the need for formulating policies to encourage industrialized housing in China and for well-planned R&D themes to be implemented simultaneously with industry practices in the near future. This paper examines ownership decision of Chinese outward foreign direct investment (FDI) with a focus on the choice between a wholly owned subsidiary and a joint venture entry mode. Based on literature review and findings from our case study of ten Chinese outward investing firms, we develop a conceptual framework that integrates the resource-based and institution-based views of international business strategy. The framework reflects special characteristics of Chinese outward FDI. On the resource side, Chinese outward FDI is both asset exploiting and asset augmenting, and accordingly, both transaction costs and strategic intents have an impact on the FDI ownership decision of Chinese firms. On the institution side, when investing overseas, Chinese firms adjust their entry strategies to attain regulative and normative institutional legitimacy in host countries. Meanwhile, they also need to comply with the rules set by the Chinese government, which provide incentives to and impose restrictions on Chinese firms' FDI ownership decisions. The computer science classes in China's institutions of higher education often have large numbers of students. In addition, many institutions offer "blended" classes that include both on-campus and online students. These large blended classrooms have long suffered from a lack of interactivity. Many online classes simply provide recorded instructor lectures to which distance students listen after downloading. This format only reinforces the negative effects of passive nonparticipatory learning. At a major university in Shanghai, researchers and developers actively seek technological interventions that can greatly increase interactivity in blended classes. They have developed a cutting-edge mobile learning system that can deliver live broadcasts of real-time classroom teaching to online students with mobile devices. Their system allows students to customize their means of content-reception, based on when and where the students are tuning into the broadcast. The system also supports short text-messaging and instant polls. Through these features, students can ask questions and make suggestions in real time, and the instructor can respond immediately. This paper describes this system in detail and also reports results from a formal implementation of the system with a blended classroom of 562 students (of whom 90% were online). Disputes are inevitable in public-private partnership (PPP) projects and generate great losses of time and money in practice. If an in-depth understanding of dispute sources can be obtained beforehand, the process of PPP may become more smooth. This paper aims to identify and assess the causes of PPP disputes between the public and private sectors. First, 15 causes are explored based on the PPP litigation cases from China Judgments Online. Second, the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method is utilized to provide a holistic understanding of the relative importance and define the cause-effect categories among PPP dispute sources. The results demonstrate that the top three decisive causes of PPP disputes are the repudiation of contracts (result category), lack of expertise and experience (reason category), and unreasonable risk allocation (result category). Further, dispute avoiding strategies are proposed to minimize or completely avoid the occurrence of PPP disputes. The outputs are expected to add meaningful insights to potential sources of dispute and dispute prevention mechanisms in PPPs. This paper presents a case study of the research and development of an RFID-based traceability system in an aircraft engineering company in Hong Kong. We report the system design and implementation, and discuss our experiences and lessons learned. The aim of the RFID system is to effectively support the tracking and tracing of aeroplane repairable items in the company. The study reveals eight critical success factors for the successful implementation of RFID systems, namely, create strong internal and external motivation for improvement, stir up desire to keep abreast of the latest technology for global competitiveness, strive for cross organizational implementation, avoid major process changes/limit process changes, start with a small RFID project scope, facilitate equipment vendor's investment, use cost-effectiveness reusable tags, and transfer RFID skills and knowledge from university to industry. We also summarize 13 lessons learned, including three lessons concerning RFID implementation at strategic level, six lessons at management level, and four lessons at operational level resulting from carrying out this project. Given the contextual details of the study, the lessons learned can help other firms to better anticipate the hurdles they will experience, and make them aware of the possible ways to cope with such difficulties before embarking on the journey of RFID implementation. The urbanization process over last several decades in China has brought benefits in multiple dimensions throughout the country. However, it appears that the benefits shared by small towns is very limited, and this is particular the case in Southwest China. This paper examines holistically the barriers against benefit-sharing by small towns in the urbanization process in China. Theory of Constraints (TOC) has been applied in this study in producing a holistic barrier-framework for studying the significance and performance of individual barriers. 21 case townships are selected in Southwest China for field surveys, including interview discussions, on-site visits and data collections. The content analysis and Likert scale scoring approach are used to convert the survey data to score values. Those significant barriers are discussed in depth by examining practical cases extracted from the field surveys. The study presents the most significant barriers which limit the benefit-sharing by small towns in Southwest China, such as lack of talents, limited financing channels, loss of labor-force population, lack of infrastructure construction, mono-industry structure, low level management ability, and restricted jurisdiction power. The findings from this study provide valuable references to search for effective approaches for promoting the development of small towns and contributing to the healthy and sustainable urbanization process in China. Different functional areas within general hospitals have varying environmental requirements, with relatively high energy consumption. A comprehensive evaluation of the operational performance's rationality is of great significance in hospitals' energy conservation efforts. This study conducted an annual post-occupancy evaluation of a general hospital located in a hot summer and cold winter area in east of China. Two hundred and seventy-eight valid online satisfaction questionnaires, sixty valid point-to-point questionnaires, indoor environment data of each typical season, and energy consumption data were obtained. The overall indoor environment of the selected hospital met the standard requirements. The results showed that occupant satisfaction was influenced by gender, working hours, and length of stay. The annual energy consumption level of this building was 84.7 kWh/m2, which is significantly lower than that of other public general hospitals in China and general hospitals in developed countries. The energy consumption of the inpatient department was directly related to the hospital days, with an increase of 12.2 kWh/m2 for every 1000 additional hospital days. A new indoor environment quality (IEQ) model and a new comprehensive evaluation model for energy efficiency were established. Overall, the outpatient department exhibited superior performance compared to the inpatient department. This project captured and analysed Chinese strategies seeking to influence global media in its coverage of China. While there is ample literature defining some of these strategies, there is a lack of empirical data tracking the strategies in practice. The project addressed this by surveying officials from journalism unions in 87 countries on their perceptions of Chinese in- fluence on the media in their country. The surveys were complemented by focus groups with senior journalists and editors in six countries. The findings illustrated how China's global media outreach policies have grown increasingly sophisticated and how the country utilises a multi-pronged approach to influence global media. Purpose: This case study presents a critical analysis of why and how corporate managers in China are reluctant to adopt sustainability reporting assurance (SRA) provided by externally independent third-party assurers, despite the fact that it is acknowledged as a value-adding activity globally. Design/methodology/approach: A longitudinal fieldwork case study was conducted from 2014 to 2019 in a Chinese central state-owned enterprise (CSOE), a pioneer in sustainability reporting practice since the mid-2000s, to collect first-hand empirical data on managerial perceptions of the adoption of external SRA. Semi-structured interviews with 25 managers involved in sustainability (reporting) practice were conducted. The interview data were triangulated with an analysis of archival documents and board meeting minutes pertaining to the undertakings of sustainability practices in the case study organization. Findings: Our empirical analysis suggests that while managers recognize the benefits of adopting external SRA in enhancing the legitimacy of sustainability accountability, they oppose SRA because of their deep-rooted allegiance to the dominant logic of sociopolitical stability in China. SRA is envisaged to risk the stability of the socialist ideology with which CSOEs are imbued. Therefore, any transformational approach to accepting a novel (foreign) practice must be molded to gain control and autonomy, thereby maintain the hegemony of stability logic. Instead of disregarding external verification, managers of our case SOE appear to harness sustainability reporting as a navigational space to engage in internally crafted alternative manners in order to resist the rationality of SRA. Originality/value: The empirical analysis presents a nuanced explanation as to why internal managers have hitherto been reluctant to embrace the embedding of independent assurance into the sustainability reporting process. Our prolonged fieldwork provides ample context-specific, intra-organizational evidence regarding the absence of SRA in Chinese CSOEs, which warrants more attention given their considerable presence in the global economy. In addition, the empirical analysis contributes to our understanding of the managerial capture of sustainability issues in a specific context of state capitalism and how organizations and individuals in an authoritarian regime interpret and respond to novel discourses derived from distinct institutional settings. The Health Silk Road (HSR) of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) of China aims to enhance public health and foster international cooperation in the healthcare sector. HSR objectives include strengthening healthcare infrastructure, expanding China's global health leadership, and enhancing international health cooperation. The aim of this study was to examine the HSR and its implications for global health and international relations by using expert opinion analysis on known major HSR initiatives. We analyzed the objectives of HSR, including improving healthcare infrastructure, enhancing global health cooperation, and expanding China's global health leadership. Additionally, as a case study, an in-depth analysis of the China-Pakistan collaboration on healthcare under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) was conducted. This research posits that the HSR has a mix of positive and negative implications. Positive impacts of HSR include improved healthcare services, infrastructure, and capacity-building in participating countries. The main challenges include the quality and sustainability of the infrastructure and services provided, debt sustainability, transparency of projects, and China's geopolitical influence. This research identified five motives behind China's HSR: economic interests, diplomatic influence, reputation building, regional stability, and health security. The summary centers on CPEC and the WHO/Global collaboration. This research contributes to a nuanced understanding of the HSR's multifaceted impacts and underscores the importance of open dialogue, cooperation, and the sharing of best practices among stakeholders. By assessing the motives, implications, and concerns of the HSR, this study offers valuable insights for policymakers, global health practitioners, and scholars, highlighting the significance of international collaboration. The labor markets for care professionals are a perennial topic of discussion. Advanced practice nurses (APN), as an advanced role in nursing, arose to solve the shortage of primary health care professionals. Prior research has advanced several areas of exploration for APNs' training or employing methods in Chinese hospitals. However, this leaves a key imperative unexplored: the management strategy of APNs in hospitals. The present study seeks to explore the management strategy of APNs in Chinese hospitals. The resource orchestration theory served as the guide as the multi-case study method investigated 18 case hospitals, gathered information from a variety of case data sources, and summarized the management strategies for hospitals' advanced practice nurses. Four types of APN management strategies—expert customized type, hierarchical linkage type, multidisciplinary benefit type, and professional penetration type—have been identified through resource orchestration. Hospitals can utilize the APN management strategy model as a guide to manage APNs in accordance with the unique characteristics of APN resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a full-scale case study, the performance of two methods—the vacuum-surcharge preloading method (S-VP) and the air-booster vacuum preloading method (A-VP)—were compared in terms of the dredged soft soil ground of the Xiang'an International Airport pavement reinforcement project in Xiamen City, China. The pore water pressure dissipation, settlement, lateral displacement, and consolidation degree were measured in the zones reinforced using the two methods. The direct shear test and field vane shear test were conducted before and after improvement. The S-VP and A-VP methods were loaded for 308 and 228 days, respectively. The results show that both reinforcement methods significantly improved the shear strength and foundation bearing capacity of the soft soil ground. The S-VP method has about 30% higher final vane shear strength and more uniform settlement compared to the A-VP method. However, the dissipation value of the average pore water pressure and the maximum foundation settlement were 5.6% and 11% higher, respectively, in A-VP than in S-VP. Compared to the S-VP method, the A-VP method decreased the maximum lateral displacements by 15%–20%, and increased the maximum reinforcement depth by 11%. Finally, compared with the use of sand cushion and vacuum pump, the A-VP method was more economical in terms of cost and energy use. Land reclamation projects will produce a large area of ground composed of ultrasoft soil, which has very low strength and cannot be used for construction activities directly on such ground. For such ultrasoft soil ground, the vacuum preloading method is generally used to strengthen the ultrasoft soil. In this study, two different vacuum preloading methods [the vacuum-surcharge preloading method (S-VP) and the air-booster vacuum preloading method (A-VP)] were used to strengthen the ultrasoft soil, and the final reinforcement effect and cost of the two methods were compared. The results show that the final reinforcement effect of the A-VP method was close to that of the S-VP method. Furthermore, the A-VP method saved more than 3 million Chinese currency (CNY) and reduced the power consumption by 80% in this project. In addition, the implementation of the A-VP method does not require a large amount of sand that is difficult to obtain in coastal areas, which is good protection for the natural resources in coastal areas. The environmental impact of materials and energy is an important concern when cities and regions produce goods and services. To examine this requires an evaluation tool which can deal with the complex system of resources, energy inputs, products and wastes involved. This paper evaluates the urban material and energy flow efficiencies of 31 cities in China using a combination of the Data Envelopment Analysis model and Principal Component Analysis method. The results show that the urban flow system is composed of several input and output principal components, including energy, materials, urban capital investment, overall output, wastes, and others. In 2010, 16 cities were efficient as judged by the material and energy inputs and outputs. The remaining 15 cities were not efficient, primarily due to product shortfalls and waste excesses. Since 2000, half of the analyzed cities experienced a decline in the urban flow efficiencies, while only six cities showed a positive trend. The reasons include excess inputs of coal, coke, electricity, cement, investment, as well as output shortfalls in terms of overall output, wastes, services, agriculture and transport. We conclude that key priorities for improving urban systems with material and energy flow inefficiency are the use of urban renewable supplies, focus on sustainable endogenous development model, and improvement management of waste output, in order to increase efficiency and sustain economic growth. Emerging new digital technologies speed up the pace of the layout of the digital economy in various countries. As the main body of China's real economy, the manufacturing industry does not account for a high proportion of the digital economy. Hence, the digital transformation of the manufacturing industry has become a hot topic. From the view of value chain reconfiguration, we selected B company as the case and introduced data from the closed loop of collection, transmission, storage, processing, and feedback into the analysis of the value chain. This study deeply studies the path of value chain reconfiguration of B company in the context of digital transformation. It finds that, under the impetus of digital transformation, B company has formed a new value chain form which is connected by data nodes in the value chain link and completed the reconfiguration of value chain through value chain boost, value chain integration, and value chain bond. On this basis, the study puts forward countermeasures and suggestions for the next phase of B company's digital transformation and the digital transformation of the manufacturing industry. Shale oil resources are usually developed by tightly spaced horizontal wells that are hydraulically fractured. Infill wells are often used to develop the zones not thoroughly produced by previously fractured parent wells, and determining the parent well spacing has become a key issue in the field as it affects the overall fracturing and production efficiency. This study employs a coupled flow and geomechanics model to investigate the poroelastic changes induced by parent well depletion in the infill zone. Based on poromechanics, the temporal and spatial changes in pore pressure, minimum horizontal principal stress, breakdown pressure, and maximum horizontal principal stress orientation are quantified. Pore pressure is used to estimate the remaining hydrocarbon exploitation potential in the infill zone, while minimum horizontal principal stress, breakdown pressure, and maximum horizontal principal stress orientation are used to estimate the difficulties of establishing hydraulic fracture networks in the infill zone. Results show that increasing parent well spacing helps to maintain the pore pressure in the infill zone, while the difficulties of initiating hydraulic fracture networks in the infill zone are slightly increased. Tight well spacing intensifies the infill zone depletion and lowers the infill well development potential, while the breakdown pressure is decreased which can facilitate future infill well fracturing.
