The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is undergoing a substantial change, and the technological advancements are shaping the future of this industry. Over years, numerous tools have been developed based on building information modeling (BIM) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to manage a variety of tasks and activities within different construction and operational phases in the AEC industry. Recently, with the advent of novel internet-enabled technologies in providing the ability of real-time connectivity, researchers have started to develop virtual design and construction (VDC) and digital twin approaches to remotely monitor, control, and optimize different work progresses and activities in real-time at any work level in the AEC industry. This paper presents a reference model to illustrates the main advantages and applications of VDC and digital twin, and to demonstrate their trends and anticipated cost savings in the AEC industry at a global level. These technological advancements along with augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) can offer the unique benefit of real-time monitoring of the current status as well as predicting the future of any physical structure at any level of work. The global demand and usage of these technological advancements will lead to great cost savings in the AEC industry which would be US$950 million in design and construction and US$400 million in operation and maintenance phases in the non-residential AEC industry in 2025. This paper also discusses the future challenges of VDC and digital twin in the industry. As a main line of future research, these technologies can simultaneously be utilized with artificial intelligence to enable human-centered decision making to automate and optimize work progresses. Such integrations of VDC, digital twin, artificial intelligence, and human-centered approaches will shape the future of the AEC industry and provide numerous research opportunities in this domain.

Estimating the depth of virtual content has proven to be a challenging task in Augmented Reality (AR) applications. Existing studies have shown that the visual system makes use of multiple depth cues to infer the distance of objects, occlusion being one of the most important ones. The ability to generate appropriate occlusions becomes particularly important for AR applications that require the visualization of augmented objects placed below a real surface. Examples of these applications are medical scenarios in which the visualization of anatomical information needs to be observed within the patient's body. In this regard, existing works have proposed several focus and context (F+C) approaches to aid users in visualizing this content using Video See-Through (VST) Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs). However, the implementation of these approaches in Optical See-Through (OST) HMDs remains an open question due to the additive characteristics of the display technology. In this article, we, for the first time, design and conduct a user study that compares depth estimation between VST and OST HMDs using existing in-situ visualization methods. Our results show that these visualizations cannot be directly transferred to OST displays without increasing error in depth perception tasks. To tackle this gap, we perform a structured decomposition of the visual properties of AR F+C methods to find best-performing combinations. We propose the use of chromatic shadows and hatching approaches transferred from computer graphics. In a second study, we perform a factorized analysis of these combinations, showing that varying the shading type and using colored shadows can lead to better depth estimation when using OST HMDs.

Military technologies are typically the product of long-term development efforts. These technologies are often adapted late in the development process for use by other users, including other members of the defense enterprise, foreign militaries, or the commercial sector. The need to adapt a technology can arise from cost over-runs or changing operational requirements. This article describes a value-based methodology for developing a transition plan early in the development process, when the system is still in the conceptual phase. Performing this analysis early in the design phase allows for design choices that will support adapting the system for other users. Moreover, it provides a risk mitigation strategy against cost over-run and changes in operational requirements. The process begins by capturing the functional architecture of the technology and analyzing them against a set of tasks associated with different military positions. From there, the adapted technology is evaluated for its projected adequacy based on the value added and the effort required for adaptation. The end-state of this analysis is a value-based model that identifies a portfolio of possible alternative markets and/or uses, which can be comparatively analyzed. A case study is presented for adapting a military augmented reality system for a different market.

Augmented reality applications use object tracking to estimate the pose of a camera and to superimpose virtual content onto the observed object. Today, a number of tracking systems are available, ready to be used in industrial applications. However, such systems are hard to handle for a service maintenance engineer, due to obscure configuration procedures. In this article, we investigate options towards replacing the manual configuration process with a machine learning approach based on automatically synthesized data. We present an automated process of creating object tracker facilities exclusively from synthetic data. The data is highly enhanced to train a convolutional neural network, while still being able to receive reliable and robust results during real world applications only from simple RGB cameras. Comparison against related work using the LINEMOD dataset showed that we are able to outperform similar approaches. For our intended industrial applications with high accuracy demands, its performance is still lower than common object tracking methods with manual configuration. Yet, it can greatly support those as an add-on during initialization, due to its higher reliability.

The internet-of-things (IoT) refers to the growing field of interconnected pervasive computing devices and the networking that supports smart, embedded applications. The IoT has multiple human-computer interaction challenges due to its many formats and interlinked components, and central to these is the need to provide sensory information and situational context pertaining to users in a more human-friendly, easily understandable format. This work addresses this by applying mixed reality toward expressing the underlying behaviors and states internal to IoT devices and IoT-enabled objects. It extends the authors’ previous research on IoT Avatars (mixed reality character representations of physical IoT devices), presenting a new head-mounted display framework and interconnection architecture. This contributes i) an exploration of mixed reality for smart spaces, ii) an approach toward expressive avatar behaviors using fuzzy inference, and iii) an early functional prototype of a hybrid physical and mixed reality IoT-enabled object. This approach is a step toward new information presentation, interaction, and engagement capabilities for smart devices and environments.

Background In recent years, the development of digital imaging technology has had a significant influence in liver surgery. The ability to obtain a 3-dimensional (3D) visualization of the liver anatomy has provided surgery with virtual reality of simulation 3D computer models, 3D printing models and more recently holograms and augmented reality (when virtual reality knowledge is superimposed onto reality). In addition, the utilization of real-time fluorescent imaging techniques based on indocyanine green (ICG) uptake allows clinicians to precisely delineate the liver anatomy and/or tumors within the parenchyma, applying the knowledge obtained preoperatively through digital imaging. The combination of both has transformed the abstract thinking until now based on 2D imaging into a 3D preoperative conception (virtual reality), enhanced with real-time visualization of the fluorescent liver structures, effectively facilitating intraoperative navigated liver surgery (augmented reality). Data sources A literature search was performed from inception until January 2021 in MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, Cochrane library and database for systematic reviews (CDSR), Google Scholar, and National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) databases. Results Fifty-one pertinent articles were retrieved and included. The different types of digital imaging technologies and the real-time navigated liver surgery were estimated and compared. Conclusions ICG fluorescent imaging techniques can contribute essentially to the real-time definition of liver segments; as a result, precise hepatic resection can be guided by the presence of fluorescence. Furthermore, 3D models can help essentially to further advancing of precision in hepatic surgery by permitting estimation of liver volume and functional liver remnant, delineation of resection lines along the liver segments and evaluation of tumor margins. In liver transplantation and especially in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT), 3D printed models of the donor's liver and models of the recipient's hilar anatomy can contribute further to improving the results. In particular, pediatric LDLT abdominal cavity models can help to manage the largest challenge of this procedure, namely large-for-size syndrome.

Michael Nilles sees digital transformation as the Holy Grail: a force that is not easy to find, not easy to capture and that has the potential to dramatically improve the customer experience. In B2C, the Holy Grail for Henkel’s Beauty Care business is for instance the beauty tech ecosystem, a series of connected devices harnessing big data and augmented reality allowing to create meaningful, personalized and direct relationships with consumers. In B2B, the Holy Grail is Henkel’s digital twin along the digital thread. Henkel builds a digital twin along the entire value chain of the customer – starting with the initial customer request via deployment, until and after sales service – in order to sell outcomes to customers. In B2B the digital twin enables outcome-based servitization. Digital technologies are thus more than enabling technologies: digital technologies allow the creation of fundamentally new, disruptive business models. The digital transformation needs small, agile teams with end-to-end responsibility for project delivery, start-up mentality and customer obsession. Finally, key metrics of the digital transformation are digital efficiency/productivity, digital revenues and digital growth (net of cannibalization).

During crisis situations, emergency operators require fast information access to achieve situation awareness and make the best possible decisions. Augmented reality could be used to visualize the wealth of user-generated content available on social media and enable context-adaptive functions for emergency operators. Although emergency operators agree that social media analytics will be important for their future work, it poses a challenge to filter and visualize large amounts of social media data. We conducted a goal-directed task analysis to identify the situation awareness requirements of emergency operators. By collecting tweets during two storms in Germany we evaluated the usefulness of Twitter data for achieving situation awareness and conducted interviews with emergency operators to derive filter strategies for social media data. We synthesized the results by discussing how the unique interface of augmented reality can be used to integrate social media data into emergency control rooms for situation awareness support.

© 2018 by the authors. Collaboration has been common in workplaces in various engineering settings and in our daily activities. However, how to effectively engage collaborators with collaborative tasks has long been an issue due to various situational and technical constraints. The research in this paper addresses the issue in a specific scenario, which is how to enable users to interact with public information from their own perspective. We describe a 3D mobile interaction technique that allows users to collaborate with other people by creating a symmetric and collaborative ambience. This in turn can increase their engagement with public displays. In order to better understand the benefits and limitations of this technique, we conducted a usability study with a total of 40 participants. The results indicate that the 3D mobile interaction technique promotes collaboration between users and also improves their engagement with the public displays.

Applications of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) assist both health care providers and patients in cardiovascular education, complementing traditional learning methods. Interventionalists have successfully used VR to plan difficult procedures and AR to facilitate complex interventions. VR/AR has already been used to treat patients, during interventions in rehabilitation programs and in immobilized intensive care patients. There are numerous additional potential applications in the catheterization laboratory. By using AR, interventionalists could combine visual fluoroscopy information projected and registered on the patient body with data derived from preprocedural imaging and live fusion of different imaging modalities such as fluoroscopy with echocardiography. Persistent technical challenges to overcome include the integration of different imaging modalities into VR/AR and the harmonization of data flow and interfaces. Cybersickness might exclude some patients and users from the potential benefits of VR/AR. Critical ethical considerations arise in the application of VR/AR in vulnerable patients. In addition, digital applications must not distract physicians from the patient. It is our duty as physicians to participate in the development of these innovations to ensure a virtual health reality benefit for our patients in a real-world setting. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current and future role of VR and AR in different fields within cardiology, its challenges, and perspectives.

One of the main targets of criticism of head-mounted displays (HMDs) is the field of view (FOV) size, whether in virtual or augmented reality. This limitation is prominent with optical see-through head-mounted displays (OST-HMD), as those with narrow overlay FOV (OFOV) sizes only provide a small window to view virtual objects. We investigated if restricting this OFOV negatively affects a user’s ability to memorize spatial locations in a simulation of a work environment, and consequently, long-term memory transfer to an equivalent scenario in the real world two days later. To find empirical evidence, we conducted a within-subjects experiment with 18 participants performing in three phases with an OST-HMD, simulated on an immersive HMD. For each phase, they viewed the training scenario with a different OFOV size of the augmentable area (30°, 70°, 110° diagonal). Results from recall tests showed that smaller OFOV size did not significantly affect user’s performance on both short-term and transfer tests, but HMD data revealed that users rotated their heads less with a 110° OFOV. We also found that proximity of objects to memorize had an interaction effect with smaller OFOV sizes. Our findings could have implications on the design and HMD choices of augmented training.

Refereed/Peer-reviewed This paper presents an Augmented Reality (AR)-based network cabling tutoring system that trains users how to interconnect cables within a Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) on a physical switching rack. AR arrows combined with text-based instruction and a checklist provided assistance during practical learning. When learners made a mistake, an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) identified the source of the mistake and provided real-time feedback using text, AR and text-to-speech mechanisms. The design was motivated by the human-cognitive architecture and its five evolutionary principles (proposed by Sweller and Sweller (2006)). Users performed four consecutive network cabling training tasks with assistance from our ITS. We found that users made fewer errors when the AR cues, text-based instruction and checklist solutions were replaced with summarised information and then removed completely in the final task compared to those who used an identical system with fixed instruction. Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) explains our results by suggesting that the instructional mechanisms become redundant as knowledge increases. Implications of the study are discussed as well as how AR can help facilitate knowledge transfer in the network cabling domain.

Background This review aims to examine the existing literature to address currently used virtual, augmented, and mixed reality modalities in the areas of preoperative surgical planning, intraoperative guidance, and postoperative management in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. In addition, this innovative technology provides future perspectives and potential benefits for cardiothoracic surgeons, trainees, and patients. Methods A targeted, non-systematic literature assessment was performed within the Medline and Google Scholar databases to help identify current trends and to provide better understanding of the current state-of-the-art extended reality (XR) modalities in cardiothoracic surgery. Related articles published up to July 2020, are included in the review. Results XR is a novel technique gaining increasing application in cardiothoracic surgery. It provides a three-dimensional (3D) and realistic view of structures and environments and offers the user the ability to interact with digital projections of surgical targets. Recent studies showed the validity and benefits of XR applications in cardiothoracic surgery. Examples include XR-guided pre-operative planning, intraoperative guidance and navigation, post-operative pain and rehabilitation management, surgical simulation, and patient education. Conclusions XR is gaining interest in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. In particular, there are promising roles for XR applications in televirtuality, surgical planning, surgical simulation, and perioperative management. However, future refinement and research is needed to further implement XR in the aforementioned settings within cardiothoracic surgery.

The method used in this research is the Multimedia Development Life Cycle (MDLC) which includes Concept, Design, Material Collecting, Assembly, Testing, and Distribution. This Augmented reality application requires streaming video taken from a smartphone camera as an input source, then this application will track and detect markers using a tracking system, after the marker is detected, the 3D chair model in the catalog will appear above the marker as if it were a chair model. it's real. the results of the hypothesis test with a significant level of 0.139, which is greater than 0.05, then what is accepted is H1. The development of Smart Home Controllers has seen rapid growth in recent years, especially for smart devices, that can utilize the Internet of Things (IoT). However, a large portion of the household devices and appliances already in use, are not IoT enabled, and therefore, requires their default control mechanisms for the devices to operate. This paper proposes a smart appliance controller that uses Augmented Reality, MQTT, and other up-to-date platforms to control aftermarket home appliances in the most efficient manner. The proposed work integrates mobile AR with IoT, to control household appliances, with the help of infrared (IR) signals. The characteristics of the system are evaluated through a series of tests and performance measures. The results of the test highlight th quick response time of MQTT for the implementation of a Home Automation System, when compared to the request-reply protocol: CoAP (4 times as fast).

OBJECTIVES Extended reality (XR), encompassing both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality, allows the user to interact with a computer-generated environment based on reality. In essence, the immersive nature of VR and augmented reality technology has been warmly welcomed in all aspects of medicine, gradually becoming increasingly feasible to incorporate into everyday practice. In recent years, XR has become increasingly adopted in thoracic surgery, although the extent of its applications is unclear. Here, we aim to review the current applications of XR in thoracic surgery. METHODS A systematic database search was conducted of original articles that explored the use of VR and/or augmented reality in thoracic surgery in EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane database and Google Scholar, from inception to December 2020. RESULTS Our search yielded 1494 citations, of which 21 studies published from 2007 to 2019 were included in this review. Three main areas were identified: (i) the application of XR in thoracic surgery training; (ii) preoperative planning of thoracic procedures; and (iii) intraoperative assistance. Overall, XR could produce progression along the learning curve, enabling trainees to reach acceptable standards before performing in the operating theatre. Preoperatively, through the generation of 3D-renderings of the thoracic cavity and lung anatomy, VR increases procedural accuracy and surgical confidence through familiarization of the patient’s anatomy. XR-assisted surgery may have therapeutic use particularly for complex cases, where conventional methods would yield inadequate outcomes due to inferior accuracy. CONCLUSION XR represents a salient step towards improving thoracic surgical training, as well as enhancing preoperative planning and intraoperative guidance., Extended reality (XR), encompassing both virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR), allows the user to interact with a computer-generated environment based on reality.

We present the case of a 74-year-old man with a history of a squamous cell carcinoma in the left axilla. The patient underwent a multidisciplinary surgical resection through an extended forequarter amputation with thoracic wall resection and reconstruction. With regard to the complexity of the case, three-dimensional virtual reality–based patient-specific reconstructions were used as a supplemental tool to conventional computed tomography imaging to plan the procedure. With this report, we aim to stimulate further research to improve and automate the workflow and to bring virtual and augmented reality reconstructions into the surgical theater of the future.

The programming of manipulators is a common task in robotics, for which numerous solutions exist. In this work, a new programming method related to the common master-slave approach is introduced, in which the master is replaced by a digital twin created through haptic and visual rendering. To achieve this, we present an algorithm that enables the haptic rendering of any programmed robot with a serial manipulator on a general-purpose haptic interface. The results show that the proposed haptic rendering reproduces the kinematic properties of the programmed robot and directly provides the desired joint space trajectories. In addition to a stand-alone usage, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can be easily paired with existing visual technology for virtual and augmented reality to facilitate a highly immersive programming experience.

Coronavirus disease 2019 created unintended but significant experiential barriers for surgical learners to interact at the bedside for teaching/case presentations. We hypothesized that an international grand rounds using the Microsoft HoloLens 2 extended reality (XR) headset would create an improved bedside-learning experience compared to traditional grand rounds formats.From December 2020 to March 2021, the world's first 2 international mixed reality grand rounds events using the HoloLens 2 headset were held, broadcasting transatlantically (between the University of Michigan and the Imperial College of London) bedside rounding experiences on 5 complex surgical patients to an international audience of 325 faculty, residents, and medical trainees. Participants completed pre- and post-event surveys to assess their experience.Of the 325 participants, 267 (80%) completed pre-surveys, and 95 (29%) completed both the pre- and post-surveys. Respondents (average age, 38 y; 44% women, 56% men; 211 US, 56 UK) included 92 (34%) medical students and residents and 175 faculty and staff. In the pre-event survey, 76% had little or no earlier experience with XR devices, and 94% thought implementation of XR into medical curricula was valuable. In the post-survey, 96% thought telerounding using XR technology was important for the current era, and 99% thought the ability to visualize the examination, imaging, and laboratory results at bedside via XR rounding was highly valuable and that this format was superior to traditional grand rounds.Almost all of the participants in the mixed reality international grand rounds felt the immersive XR experiences-allowing visualization of clinical findings, imaging, and laboratory results at the patient's bedside-were superior to a traditional grand rounds format, and that it could be a valuable tool for surgical teaching and telerounding.

International audience; Situated visualization is an emerging concept within visualization, in which data is visualized in situ, where it is relevant to people. The concept has gained interest from multiple research communities, including visualization, human-computer interaction (HCI) and augmented reality. This has led to a range of explorations and applications of the concept, however, this early work has focused on the operational aspect of situatedness leading to inconsistent adoption of the concept and terminology. First, we contribute a literature survey in which we analyze 44 papers that explicitly use the term "situated visualization" to provide an overview of the research area, how it defines situated visualization, common application areas and technology used, as well as type of data and type of visualizations. Our survey shows that research on situated visualization has focused on technology-centric approaches that foreground a spatial understanding of situatedness. Secondly, we contribute five perspectives on situatedness (space, time, place, activity, and community) that together expand on the prevalent notion of situatedness in the corpus. We draw from six case studies and prior theoretical developments in HCI. Each perspective develops a generative way of looking at and working with situatedness in design and research. We outline future directions, including considering technology, material and aesthetics, leveraging the perspectives for design, and methods for stronger engagement with target audiences. We conclude with opportunities to consolidate situated visualization research.

Mutual occlusion is an essential feature for augmented reality (AR) displays for allowing the virtual content to be clearly perceived under an excessively illuminated environment. Although a few works have been done to facilitate the performance of occlusion-capable optical see-through augmented reality (OC-OST-AR) displays, the realization of mutual occlusion in a wide field-of-view (FOV) is still challenging. Divergent from typical hard-edge occlusion and soft edge-occlusion designs, we propose the paired-ellipsoidal-mirror (PEM) structure. The proposed system is allowed to support either hard-edge occlusion or enhanced soft-edge occlusion in a wide FOV by optionally fixing a spatial light modulator (SLM) before the entrance pupil or at an inner focal plane. The numerical aperture (NA) of the system is efficiently increased by the combination of paired ellipsoidal mirror imaging and aperture stop restriction. With proof-of-concept prototypes built, virtual display in a FOV of H160°×V74° and mutual occlusion in a FOV of H122°×V74° are demonstrated with a basic design, respectively. Furthermore, a mixed FOV of H95.3°×V52.9° is demonstrated by an optimized design with vertical parallax reduction and virtual display improvement.

360° video is becoming an increasingly popular technology on commercial social platforms and vital part of emerging Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality (VR/AR) applications. However, the delivery of 360° video content in mobile networks is challenging because of its size. The encoding of 360° video into multiple quality layers and tiles and edge cache-assisted video delivery have been proposed as a remedy to the excess bandwidth requirements of 360° video delivery systems. Existing works using the above tools have shown promising performance for Video-on-Demand (VoD) 360° delivery, but they cannot be straightforwardly extended in a live-streaming setup. Motivated by the above, we study edge cache-assisted 360° live video streaming to increase the overall quality of the delivered 360° videos to users and reduce the service cost. We employ Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks to forecast the evolution of the content requests and prefetch content to caches. To further enhance the delivered video quality, users located in the overlap of the coverage areas of multiple Small Base Stations (SBSs) are allowed to receive data from any of these SBSs. We evaluate and compare the performance of our algorithm with Least Frequently Used (LFU), Least Recently Used (LRU), and First In First Out (FIFO) algorithms. The results show the superiority of the proposed approach in terms of delivered video quality, cache-hit-ratio and backhaul link usage.

Registering the 2D images (2D space) with the 3D model of the environment (3D space) provides a promising solution to outdoor Augmented Reality (AR) virtual-real registration. In this work, we use the position and orientation of the ground camera image to synthesize a corresponding rendered image from the outdoor large-scale 3D image-based point cloud. To achieve the virtual-real registration, we indirectly establish the spatial relationship between 2D and 3D space by matching the above two kinds (2D/3D space) of cross-domain images. However, matching cross-domain images goes beyond the capability of handcrafted descriptors and existing deep neural networks . To address this issue, we propose an end-to-end network, Y-Net, to learn Domain Robust Feature Representations (DRFRs) for the cross-domain images. Besides, we introduce a cross-domain-constrained loss function that balances the loss in image content and cross-domain consistency of the feature representations. Experimental results show that the DRFRs simultaneously preserve the representation of image content and suppress the influence of independent domains. Furthermore, Y-Net outperforms the existing algorithms on extracting feature representations and achieves state-of-the-art performance in cross-domain image retrieval . Finally, we validate the Y-Net-based registration approach on campus to demonstrate its possible applicability.

The amount of arable land is limited, yet the demand for agricultural food products is increasing. This issue has led to the notion of precision farming, where smart city-based technologies (e.g., Internet of Things, digital twins, artificial intelligence) are employed in combination to cater for increased production with fewer resources. Widely used in manufacturing, augmented reality has demonstrated impactful solutions for information communication, remote monitoring and increased interaction. Yet, the technology has only recently begun to find a footing alongside precision farming solutions, despite the many benefits possible to farmers through augmenting the physical world with digital objects. Therefore, this article reflects on literature discussing current applied solutions within agriculture, where augmented realty has demonstrated a significant impact for monitoring and production. The findings discuss that augmented reality must be coupled with other technologies (e.g., simultaneous localization and mapping algorithms, global positioning systems, and sensors), specifically 9 are identified across 2 application domains (livestock and crop farming) to be beneficial. Attention is also provided on how augmented reality should be employed within agriculture, where related-work examples are drawn from in order to discuss suitable hardware approaches and constraints (e.g., mobility).

Cultural-heritage research has created a vast amount of information regarding heritage objects and sites. At the same time, recent efforts on the digitization of cultural heritage have provided novel means of documenting tangible cultural resources including digital images, videos, audio testimonies, and 3D reconstructions. Furthermore, ethnographic research is nowadays combined with advanced capturing technologies such as motion capture to record the intangible dimensions of heritage as these are manifested through human expression in dance, heritage crafts, etc. This amount of information is now available and should be used to create novel forms of experiential access to cultural heritage powered by the web and mobile technologies mixed with novel interaction paradigms such as virtual and augmented reality. In this article, a platform is presented that facilitates a cloud-based web application to support location-based narratives on cultural-heritage resources provided through map-based or story-based representation approaches. At the same time, the platform through the power of modern mobile devices can provide these experiences on the move using location-based and image recognition-based augmented reality to facilitate multiple usage contexts. The platform was implemented to support the goal of the project CuRe, in the context of the “Greece-Germany” bilateral collaboration action.

In the aviation industry, cable bracket is one of the most common parts. The traditional assembly state inspection method of cable bracket is to manually compare by viewing 3D models. The purpose of this paper is to address the problem of inefficiency of traditional inspection method. In order to solve the problem that machine learning algorithm requires large dataset and manually labeling of dataset is a laborious and time-consuming task, a simulation platform is developed to automatically generate synthetic realistic brackets images with pixel-level annotations based on 3D digital mock-up. In order to obtain accurate shapes of brackets from 2D image, a brackets recognizer based on Mask R-CNN is trained. In addition, a semi-automatic cable bracket inspection method is proposed. With this method, the inspector can easily obtain the inspection result only by taking a picture with a portable device, such as augmented reality (AR) glasses. The inspection task will be automatically executed via bracket recognition and matching. The experimental result shows that the proposed method for automatically labeling dataset is valid and the proposed cable bracket inspection method can effectively inspect cable bracket in the aircraft. Finally, a prototype system based on client-server framework has been developed for validation purpose.

BACKGROUND: Accurate localization of early lung cancer, manifested as solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs) on computed tomography (CT), is critical in sublobar lung resection. The AR-assisted localization of SPNs was evaluated using a pig animal model. METHODS: A Microsoft HoloLens AR system was used. First, a plastic thoracic model was used for the pilot study. Three female 12 months 45 kg Danish Landrace Pigs were then used for the animal study. Thirty natural pulmonary structures, such as lymphonodus and bifurcated bronchioles or bronchial vessels, were chosen as simulated SPNs. The average angle between the actual puncturing needle and the expected path, the average distance between the puncture point and the plan point, and the difference between the actual puncturing depth and expected depth were recorded, and the accuracy rate was calculated. RESULTS: The point selected in the plastic thoracic model could be hit accurately with the assistance from the AR system in the pilot study. Moreover, the average angle between the actual puncturing needle and the expected path was 14.52°±6.04°. Meanwhile, the average distance between the puncture point and the expected point was 8.74±5.07 mm, and the difference between the actual and expected depths was 9.42±7.95 mm. Puncturing within a 1 cm(3) area around the SPN using a hook-wire was considered a successful hit. The puncture accuracy was calculated. The average hit rate within a spherical area with a diameter of 1 cm range was 76.67%, and within a diameter of 2 cm range was 100%. CONCLUSIONS: The HoloLens AR-assisted localization of SPNs may become a promising technique to improve the surgical treatment of early-stage lung cancer. Here, we evaluated its feasibility in an animal model. Nevertheless, its safety and effectiveness require further investigation in clinical trials.

Purpose Consumers today actively participate in online purchasing experiences. As a result, it is critical to comprehend the behavioral aspects of novel technology usage, such as augmented reality (AR). AR apps enable beauty companies to create and design more immersive experience services. This study aims to highlight consumers’ perspectives on their continued desire to use AR app services. Design/methodology/approach A comparative study between China and South Korea was conducted with sample sizes of 458 and 315, respectively. Smart PLS was used for analysis. Findings The findings suggest that AR apps influence innovative consumers in China and South Korea to be satisfied with and continue to use such services. Previous research on technology acceptance model, information system success, AR and artificial intelligence (AI)-context-specific variables supported the findings. Practical implications This study contributes to the development of AR apps for beauty brands, as such technology revolutionizes how beauty brands work and grow. As a result, AR apps can pave the way for brands to provide an immersive experience to their customers. Originality/value The current study contributes to AR and AI drivers in the context of beauty brands by using novel technologies such as AR. AR integration with AI-context-specific variables indicates that consumers in China and South Korea are innovative and accept such technologies when purchasing beauty products online.

Background Although many cervical cytology diagnostic support systems have been developed, it is challenging to classify overlapping cell clusters with a variety of patterns in the same way that humans do. In this study, we developed a fast and accurate system for the detection and classification of atypical cell clusters by using a two‐step algorithm based on two different deep learning algorithms. Methods We created 919 cell images from liquid‐based cervical cytological samples collected at Sapporo Medical University and annotated them based on the Bethesda system as a dataset for machine learning. Most of the images captured overlapping and crowded cells, and images were oversampled by digital processing. The detection system consists of two steps: (1) detection of atypical cells using You Only Look Once v4 (YOLOv4) and (2) classification of the detected cells using ResNeSt. A label smoothing algorithm was used for the dataset in the second classification step. This method annotates multiple correct classes from a single cell image with a smooth probability distribution. Results The first step, cell detection by YOLOv4, was able to detect all atypical cells above ASC‐US without any observed false negatives. The detected cell images were then analyzed in the second step, cell classification by the ResNeSt algorithm, which exhibited average accuracy and F‐measure values of 90.5% and 70.5%, respectively. The oversampling of the training image and label smoothing algorithm contributed to the improvement of the system's accuracy. Conclusion This system combines two deep learning algorithms to enable accurate detection and classification of cell clusters based on the Bethesda system, which has been difficult to achieve in the past. We will conduct further research and development of this system as a platform for augmented reality microscopes for cytological diagnosis., Through two different types of CNNs, we were able to exclusively detect and determine atypical cell clusters with high sensitivity. The deep learning approach was also extremely useful for cervical Pap Smears with diverse images.

With the progress of human society, more and more scientific and technological achievements are applied to people’s development activities, and virtual reality technology is one of them. This case is a study on the path, form, and role of virtual reality and augmented reality technology in public art design. Through combining the public art form and current situation, we put forward the problem of increasing public art creation methods through the intervention of virtual reality technology, change the display method of public art with innovative technical solutions, and explore innovative ways of public art design application. In the research process, the author carried out detailed case research, technical demonstration, and creative practice on virtual reality technology; combined and studied a lot of advanced technical means that can be applied in public art creation and display design; and explored the collaborative innovation of technology and art, the public art design methods, and application approaches in China. On the basis of a comprehensive understanding of the artistic effects that can be achieved by related software and the future directions studied by technical personnel, analyzing the demand and feasibility of the technology in the application of public art, and exploring and summarizing virtual reality technology and augmented reality technology under the background of rapid development and popularization, public art design uses these technologies to solve practical problems and promotes the process of art design innovation and publicization by means of innovative media and experience forms. It increases the importance of virtual technology in public art and changes the traditional business model of public art. Experimental results show that the public’s attention to public equipment based on sensors and virtual reality technology has increased by more than 60%, and modern technology is used to make up for the development of public art and culture. The digital sustainable development of interactive installations of public art in my country provides new ideas.

Purpose Augmented reality (AR) integrates the digital world with the real world and thus, provides a real-time experience to the users. With AR, the immediate surroundings become a learning platform for the users. The perception of the products has been enhanced many times with AR; thus, enriching user experience and responsiveness. The purpose of this paper is to bring forth the basics of AR and provide an overview of the research work carried out by researchers in the implementation of AR in different sectors. Design/methodology/approach This paper summarizes the usefulness of AR in different industries. The authors have identified the peer-reviewed research publications from Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, etc. The selection of literature has been made based upon the significance of AR in recent times. The industries/sectors where AR has been implemented successfully have been considered for this paper. The paper has been divided into various sections and subsections to bring more clarity to the readers. Findings This paper presents a brief and a precise information on Industry 4.0 and AR. The basic working of AR system and its implications have also been discussed. The preference of AR over virtual reality (VR) has also been deliberated in this paper. The authors have presented the usefulness of AR in different sectors such as smart factories, ship yard building, online shopping, surgery and education. This paper discusses the AR-ready procedures being followed in these sectors. Originality/value AR has been an add-on to VR systems. The processes in industries have become very handy and informative with AR. Because the application of AR in different sectors has not been discussed in a single paper; thus, this work presents a systematic literature review on the applications of AR in different sectors/industries.

Education during the pandemic experiences many obstacles that hinder all learning processes. Learning in ecology courses, in particular, has problems because it has one of the activities students have to go to the environment to make observations. The environment referred to here is the Brantas River. Brantas River is the largest river in East Java. However, the river is polluted due to human activities around the river. This phenomenon is intended to be presented as a lesson material for students to be able to improve environmental attitudes. Augmented reality assistance is useful for moving the environment that will be the subject of student observation during virtual learning.

As augmented reality technologies develop, real-time interactions between objects present in the real world and virtual space are required. Generally, recognition and location estimation in augmented reality are carried out using tracking techniques, typically markers. However, using markers creates spatial constraints in simultaneous tracking of space and objects. Therefore, we propose a system that enables camera tracking in the real world and visualizes virtual visual information through the recognition and positioning of objects. We scanned the space using an RGB-D camera. A three-dimensional (3D) dense point cloud map is created using point clouds generated through video images. Among the generated point cloud information, objects are detected and retrieved based on the pre-learned data. Finally, using the predicted pose of the detected objects, other information may be augmented. Our system estimates object recognition and 3D pose based on simple camera information, enabling the viewing of virtual visual information based on object location.

Background and Objective: Augmented Reality (AR) is an effective tool for learning as well as marketing with multilateral interactive communication. It allows brands to give their customers unique experiences with the convenience of tapping into their mobile devices. This study was conducted to assess the perceptions of healthcare professionals (HCPs) to learn through AR and its effectiveness in HCPs’ engagement and learning experience. Methods: An interventional study was conducted with HCPs across various tertiary care hospitals in Pakistan from May 2020 till December 2020. An AR based activity was carried out with the HCPs where they used pictures of objects around them to create a message. These were geo-tagged to a question related to hypertension and participants answered each question. Mobile application – WallaMe was utilized for this activity. At the end of the activity, HCPs were requested to fill a feedback form based on their experience with the AR app. Data was entered and analyzed by using SPSS version 22. Results: AR stimulated learning gives the participants an overall exciting (80%), captivating (81%), and fruitful learning experience (82%). AR for marketing campaign was more effective for Brand Recall with paper based campaign for 82.8% and more effective than digital campaign for 85.6% participants. AR was recommended by 80% participants for learning and brand recall. Conclusion: AR is a useful tool to enhance user experience for learning as well as improves brand recall and can be used for marketing campaigns.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Imaging technologies (X-ray, CT, MRI, and ultrasound) have revolutionized orthopedic surgery, allowing for the more efficient diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of musculoskeletal aliments. The current review investigates recent literature surrounding the impact of augmented reality (AR) imaging technologies on orthopedic surgery. In particular, it investigates the impact that AR technologies may have on provider cognitive burden, operative times, occupational radiation exposure, and surgical precision and outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: Many AR technologies have been shown to lower provider cognitive burden and reduce operative time and radiation exposure while improving surgical precision in pre-clinical cadaveric and sawbones models. So far, only a few platforms focusing on pedicle screw placement have been approved by the FDA. These technologies have been implemented clinically with mixed results when compared to traditional free-hand approaches. SUMMARY: It remains to be seen if current AR technologies can deliver upon their multitude of promises, and the ability to do so seems contingent upon continued technological progress. Additionally, the impact of these platforms will likely be highly conditional on clinical indication and provider type. It remains unclear if AR will be broadly accepted and utilized or if it will be reserved for niche indications where it adds significant value. One thing is clear, orthopedics’ high utilization of pre- and intra-operative imaging, combined with the relative ease of tracking rigid structures like bone as compared to soft tissues, has made it the clear beachhead market for AR technologies in medicine.

This special issue of ITCON brought together ten papers on Construction 4.0 related topics. These papers are drawn from papers presented at the 20th International Conference on Construction Applications of Virtual Reality (CONVR 2021) held at Teesside University, Middlesbrough TS1 3JN, the UK, in October 2020. CONVR is one of the world-leading conferences in the areas of Virtual Reality, augmented reality and building information modelling. Each year, more than 100 participants from all around the globe meet to discuss and exchange the latest developments and applications of virtual technologies in the architectural, engineering, construction and operation industry (AECO). The conference is also known for having a unique blend of participants from both academia and industry. The overarching theme for CONVR2020 was "Enabling the development and implementation of Digital Twins."

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: While limited to case reports or small case series, emerging evidence advocates the inclusion of smartphone-interfacing mobile platforms and wearable technologies, consisting of internet-powered mobile and wearable devices that interface with smartphones, in the orthopaedic surgery practice. The purpose of this review is to investigate the relevance and impact of this technology in orthopaedic surgery. RECENT FINDINGS: Smartphone-interfacing mobile platforms and wearable technologies are capable of improving the patients’ quality of life as well as the extent of their therapeutic engagement, while promoting the orthopaedic surgeons’ abilities and level of care. Offered advantages include improvements in diagnosis and examination, preoperative templating and planning, and intraoperative assistance, as well as postoperative monitoring and rehabilitation. Supplemental surgical exposure, through haptic feedback and realism of audio and video, may add another perspective to these innovations by simulating the operative environment and potentially adding a virtual tactile feature to the operator’s visual experience. SUMMARY: Although encouraging in the field of orthopaedic surgery, surgeons should be cautious when using smartphone-interfacing mobile platforms and wearable technologies, given the lack of a current academic governing board certification and clinical practice validation processes.

This article presents a novel extended reality (XR) and deep-learning-based Internet-of-Medical-Things (IoMT) solution for the COVID-19 telemedicine diagnostic, which systematically combines virtual reality/augmented reality (AR) remote surgical plan/rehearse hardware, customized 5G cloud computing and deep learning algorithms to provide real-time COVID-19 treatment scheme clues. Compared to existing perception therapy techniques, our new technique can significantly improve performance and security. The system collected 25 clinic data from the 347 positive and 2270 negative COVID-19 patients in the Red Zone by 5G transmission. After that, a novel auxiliary classifier generative adversarial network-based intelligent prediction algorithm is conducted to train the new COVID-19 prediction model. Furthermore, The Copycat network is employed for the model stealing and attack for the IoMT to improve the security performance. To simplify the user interface and achieve an excellent user experience, we combined the Red Zone's guiding images with the Green Zone's view through the AR navigate clue by using 5G. The XR surgical plan/rehearse framework is designed, including all COVID-19 surgical requisite details that were developed with a real-time response guaranteed. The accuracy, recall, F1-score, and area under the ROC curve (AUC) area of our new IoMT were 0.92, 0.98, 0.95, and 0.98, respectively, which outperforms the existing perception techniques with significantly higher accuracy performance. The model stealing also has excellent performance, with the AUC area of 0.90 in Copycat slightly lower than the original model. This study suggests a new framework in the COVID-19 diagnostic integration and opens the new research about the integration of XR and deep learning for IoMT implementation.

En los últimos años, la Realidad Aumentada se ha aplicado en diferentes ámbitos relacionados a patrimonio cultural, incluyendo ambientes interiores, como museos y galerías y ambientes al aire libre, como guías turísticos. La Realidad Aumentada proporciona una tecnología que aplicada al desarrollo de productos útiles y fáciles de usar, mejora la experiencia de usuario de los turistas. En este trabajo, proponemos un conjunto preliminar de guías de Experiencia de Usuario para aplicaciones móviles de Turismo Cultural, basadas en Realidad Aumentada. La propuesta se basa en: la revisión de estudios existentes sobre Experiencia de Usuario en productos de software para Turismo Cultural con Realidad Aumentada, y también en el análisis de expertos en Experiencia de Usuario. Como trabajo futuro, pretendemos validar el conjunto de guías obtenidas en casos de estudio.

The rapid development of virtual and augmented reality technologies is currently taking place in almost all spheres of activity. Elements of virtual and augmented reality are used in such areas as education, medicine, transport, gaming, tourism and others. The active spread of these technologies causes the emergence of special competencies in the IT labor market and, as a result, the formation of new professions.Many Russian universities are training students in IT training areas. Specialization in the development of computer games and virtual reality applications has begun recently. The provision of practical classes is accompanied by specific tasks, which gives students the opportunity to improve the use of software and technical devices.The relevance of the research is determined by the current demand for the use of the latest technologies by IT developers in the field of creating computer games. Today, technologies that provide a player’s immersion in virtual reality are becoming more and more popular. One of these technologies is a suit with wearable sensors that track a person’s position in space in real time. However, there are quite a few real described projects in the literature and on the Internet. This study examines the process of developing a task for creating a game application using virtual reality technology: a suit with wearable sensors for teaching students.Materials and methods of research. Timely identification of the needs of the IT market in personnel training allows educational organizations to form new training programs of different levels of training. This approach makes it possible to target the educational and methodological materials being developed to use the latest achievements in the development of the field under study.Using a systematic approach, the study characterizes virtual reality suits and sensors for monitoring the position in the user’s space. Thus, the goal of the task was to ensure the immersiveness and convenience of interaction between the player and the game environment.Based on materials on software, position sensors in space, the approach of pedagogical design was applied and the procedure was formed for a practical task, reflecting the relevant competencies.Results. The study was conducted on the basis in the framework of laboratory and practical work of students, as well as at a real enterprise. Training in the new profile of the direction of training “Applied informatics” is fully equipped with all the latest technologies in this field. As a result of the work, the content of the practical task was developed.Real development of virtual and augmented reality applications is conducted jointly with students. Almost all projects used a suit with body sensors.Conclusion. Our study examines in detail the process of developing an application using a suit with wearable sensors for further training of students. Based on the results, work can be carried out on real projects for any field. Based on the research materials, it is planned to issue a textbook for students with the profile of developing computer games and virtual / augmented reality applications.

Interaction is one of the important topics to be discussed since it includes the interface where the end-user communicates with the augmented reality (AR) system. In handheld AR interface, the traditional interaction techniques are not suitable for some AR applications due to the different attributes of handheld devices that always refer to smartphones and tablets. Currently interaction techniques in handheld AR are known as touch-based technique, mid-air gesture-based technique and device-based technique that can led to a wide discussion in related research areas. However, this paper will focus to discover the device-based interaction technique because it has proven in the previous studies to be more suitable and robust in several aspects. A novel device-based 3D object rotation technique is proposed to solve the current problem in performing 3DOF rotation of 3D object. The goal is to produce a precise and faster 3D object rotation. Therefore, the determination of the rotation amplitudes per second is required before the fully implementation. This paper discusses the implementation in depth and provides a guideline for those who works in related to device-based interaction.

The blended laboratory model in this study refers to an integrated laboratory concept combining synchronous (real laboratory activities) using the Internet of things (IoT) and asynchronous learning with augmented reality (AR). The application of blended laboratory model in science learning teachers is still low in Indonesia due to the lack of ICT support for online learning. This preliminary study was conducted to analyze the need for the development of the blended laboratory model with IoT and AR involving 45 science teachers and 42 junior high school students as the respondents with stratified random sampling technique. The research method employed survey and focus group discussion. The results of the study showed that (1) 67% of teachers and 92% of students have never used AR, (2) 72% of teachers and 89% of students have never utilized IoT, (3) 65% of science laboratories in the junior high school do not have proper devices for AR application, (5) 76% of science laboratories in the junior high schools are not facilitated with proper equipment for the IoT application, (6) the respondents stated that the development of blended laboratory is very important (72%) and important (18%) to support IT-based learning, especially to deal with the conditions after the Covid-19 outbreak. ©2021 JSER. The translator application from Banjar Language to Indonesian is called BandoAR and vice versa from Indonesian to Banjar Language which is called NdoBAR. Both applications utilize Mobile Augmented Reality technology with the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Method for word recognition in the detected image. This application is recommended and used to help tourists visiting the city of Banjarmasin to be able to understand the language used by local people as a means of communication and for the general public who want to know the peculiarities of the Banjar language itself. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the user experience of the BandoAR and NdoBAR applications. The method used is UX Honeycomb, which has seven aspects to assess the user experience of an application. A total of 50 respondents were presented to assess the two applications. The results showed that the BandoAR application had an average UX Honeycomb value of 4.91 with a Very Strongly Agree predicate and for the NdoBAR application, an average value of UX Honeycomb was 4.89 with a Very Strongly Agree predicate. Both applications have fulfilled aspects of the user experience. However, we need some fixes for the shortcomings of both apps, to continue to improve interactions, better user experience, and other smart capabilities.

Jakarta has 62 well-maintained museums but most are still conventional in the way that they mostly display objects or collections with accompanying written information and interactive media is still very limited.[1] In Indonesia, museum curators and managers need to be more creative in presenting objects and information to increase the number of visitors [2].The difficulty of luring visitors to museums has even became a national issue and problem:[1] the Indonesian government considers it as a matter that needs to be addressed. [3, 4] In 2010, the Association of Museums in Indonesia (AMI) and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy declared it the Year of Visiting the Museum [5] as part of the National Movement to Love Museums, which lasted until 2014 [1]. The strategic efforts from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy were then followed up with the introduction of national programs such as Revitalizing Indonesian Museum [5]. Museums should be a place to enhance the learning experience, sharing knowledge, as well as a place to study and conduct research [5]. Here, the museum is required not only as a means of public learning, but must also be able to support the development of study centers in universities [5]. Therefore, adding interactive media using Augmented Reality to Indonesian museums will increase the interest in learning about the local culture and heritage of Indonesia among the Indonesian population, especially students.

BACKGROUND Human cadavers are an essential component of anatomy education. However, access to cadaveric specimens and laboratory facilities is limited in most parts of the world. Hence, new innovative approaches and accessible technologies are much needed to enhance anatomy training. OBJECTIVE To provide a practical method for 3-dimensional (3D) visualization of cadaveric specimens to maximize the utility of these precious educational materials. METHODS Embalmed cadaveric specimens (cerebrum, brain stem, and cerebellum) were used. The 3D models of cadaveric specimens were built by merging multiple 2-dimensional photographs. Pictures were taken with standard mobile devices (smartphone and tablet). A photogrammetry program (Qlone®, 2017-2020, EyeCue Vision Technologies Ltd, Yokneam, Israel), an all-in-one 3D scanning and augmented reality technology, was then used to convert the images into an integrated 3D model. RESULTS High-resolution 360-degree 3D models of the cadaveric specimens were obtained. These models could be rotated and moved freely on different planes, and viewed from different angles with varying magnifications. Advanced editing options and the possibility for export to virtual- or augmented-reality simulation allowed for better visualization. CONCLUSION This inexpensive, simple, and accessible method for creating 360-degree 3D cadaveric models can enhance training in neuroanatomy and allow for a highly realistic surgical simulation environment for neurosurgeons worldwide.

Augmented Reality (AR) applications can enable geographically distant users to collaborate using shared video feeds or interactive 3D holograms, and may be particularly useful in the socially distant context of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, a good user experience is key for their success and could be negatively impacted by network impairments, which are an inevitable occurrence in today's best-effort Internet. In this paper, we present the findings of an empirical user study, aimed at understanding the effects of network outages, on user experience and behavior, in a collaborative AR task. We highlight how network outages affected users in different ways depending on their role in the collaborative task, and how giving users explicit information about poor network conditions helped them deal with some of these negative effects. Augmented and virtual reality (AR-VR) is a fast developing technology that has been used in the field of medicine for a long time. It has also found its way in dentistry and the preliminary assessments so far have shown promising results. Aim: The presented scoping review was conducted with an aim of identifying the current applications of AR-VR in the field of dental training and education. The paper also highlights the presently available dental simulators, their features and areas of use. Result: It was found that AR-VR is not restricted to teaching of upcoming dentists but also helps practicing physicians to return to basics and refine their skills. Inclusion of haptics provides a realistic experience by simulating the tactile sensations. Instant feedback feature act as a source of motivation to cover the missed bases. Conclusion: AR-VR technology has numerous advantages in dental education and training. However, the currently available systems require imports and are bulky to be transported in difficult terrains. Thereby it is important that indigenous systems be developed that have enhanced feasibility to be used for training of Armed Forces for managing trauma cases encountered in the field.
