While measures of research quality are widely accepted in the education research community, there may be less agreement on what constitutes evidence of impact and on where to look for it. The aims of this symposium are to consider some key issues in undertaking the Australian government's national assessment of research engagement and impact, and to propose some approaches to evidencing engagement and impact in the context of mathematics education research. Each of the four symposium papers draws on the Numeracy Across the Curriculum (NAC) research program in order to ground discussion in specific cases of research that have been reported at previous Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA) conferences. This paper discusses the use of video data to research pedagogic practices in new generation learning environments (NGLEs) in primary and secondary schools. Using video footage drawn from a collaborative research project between the University of Melbourne and the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (2013), the paper charts the development of a framework for analysing and representing teacher practice across a range of NGLEs: learning spaces that provide a greater degree of spatial variation, geographic freedom and access to resources for students and teachers than traditional classrooms. Video of teacher practice collected in four Victorian government schools was used as the basis for developing the framework. This footage was initially coded using Studiocode, a software tool that has been employed to analyse teacher practice in classrooms across the world, including by the International Centre for Classroom Research (ICCR), but not as far as we know used to analyse teacher practice in NGLEs through a human geographic or spatial lens. The paper describes the research methodology, the data collection methods and the analysis framework that was developed to represent data about the 'intersections' between people, space, practice and time i.e. the complex spatialized pedagogic practice of teachers in NGLEs. The practical dilemmas and hurdles that were encountered during the process of developing a simple coding system and visual tool that could represent teacher practice in NGLEs are discussed, along with the final analysis framework and representational tool that arose from the empirical data.

Education, as an important right in our contemporary world, began since we exist. Knowledge and skills were passed by adults to the young, and cultures began to extend their experiences through various forms. Schools and academies were formed since the most ancient civilizations. Although between innumerous difficulties, these experiences were capable to teach us how to develop better formative effects and to turn education a generalized and global right. Formal education and other educational practices are used by all of us in the constitution of the human being, in the way one thinks, feels and acts. One of the most important contributions resides in what and how we learn through the improvement of educational processes, both in formal and informal settings. This international conference seeks to provide explore the processes, actions, challenges and outcomes of learning, teaching and human development. Our goal is to offer a worldwide connection between teachers, students, researchers and lecturers, from a wide range of academic fields, interested in exploring and giving their contribution in educational issues We take pride in having been able to connect and bring together academics, scholars, practitioners and others interested in a field that is fertile in new perspectives, ideas and knowledge. We counted on an extensive variety of contributors and presenters, which can supplement our view of the human essence and behavior, showing the impact of their different personal, academic and cultural experiences. This is, certainly, one of the reasons we have many nationalities and cultures represented, inspiring multi-disciplinary collaborative links, fomenting intellectual encounter and development. END 2014 received over more 292 submissions, from 40 different countries, reviewed by a double-blind process. Submissions were prepared to take form of Oral Presentations, Posters, Virtual Presentations and Workshops. It were accepted for presentation in the conference, 83 submissions (28% acceptance rate). The conference also includes a keynote presentation from the distinguished Professor Hanna David, Tel Aviv University (Emerita), Israel, to whom we express our most gratitude. Issues in the impact of educational research on educational policy and practice in Australian schools are addressed in this paper, which provides an overview of the numerous research and evaluation projects being conducted in Australian education. Specific questions examined are the extent to which: (1) the research subjects (schools) benefit from the research; and (2) decision makers in other parts of the system are informed and act upon research findings. In the paper, the director-general of the Department of School Education describes the importance of school-university collaboration and asserts that any high-level decision contemplated by the director-general must consider relevant information of various kinds from multiple sources. It is recommended that the department adopt a set of formal structures to oversee the role of research in departmental activities and to provide for ongoing data collection, storage, and analysis. A conclusion is that the department's own research program is more likely to be directly beneficial because it is applicable to departmental needs and decision-making purposes. Such decision-oriented research is distinguished from basic, or conclusion-oriented, research. The IADIS CELDA 2012 Conference intention was to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There had been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality and multi-agents systems. These developments have created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This conference aimed to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments. The IADIS CELDA 2012 Conference received 98 submissions from more than 24 countries. Out of the papers submitted, 29 were accepted as full papers. In addition to the presentation of full papers, short papers and reflection papers, the conference also includes a keynote presentation from internationally distinguished researchers. There is a strong international trend for governments to move teacher training away from the universities into the schools. In effect, this is a challenge to the expertise and effectiveness of university-based teacher educators. This paper examines the role of fashions in research in the destruction of teacher educator credibility. Reflective teaching, the quantitative-qualitative debate, and challenges to a notion of commonsense reality springing from a range of sociological and philosophical theories are considered as more recent examples of fashionable research issues in teacher education. Reasons for fashions in education research considered include: pressures generated by the scaling down and closure of teacher education facilities in the United States and the United Kingdom; the advent of more journals, all competing for a buying and reading audience; attempts to judge academic worth through volume; and a tendency for academics to avoid lengthy research projects. The need for a more rigorous approach to research involving replication and transfer to natural classrooms is highlighted as well as the need for extensive trialling before new approaches are widely implemented. The Second International Conference on Educational Data Mining (EDM2009) was held at the University of Cordoba, Spain, on July 1-3, 2009. EDM brings together researchers from computer science, education, psychology, psychometrics, and statistics to analyze large data sets to answer educational research questions. The increase in instrumented educational software and databases of student test scores, has created large repositories of data reflecting how students learn. The EDM conference focuses on computational approaches for using those data to address important educational questions. Studies of teacher development face the issue of providing a valid and generalizable analysis reflecting the influence of differences in people and contexts and their interactions. To adopt a study designed upon a single set of data, whether extensive or intensive, is limiting--both types of data are needed. Effective research provides for a wide set of data gathering instruments to be used, and the construction of categories and constructs that are validated across individual participants and the populations from which they are drawn. Theories and interventions based upon such research will have more generalizability than those developed from a series of case study research projects. A study of the characteristics and processes of teacher development in the management domain, based on data from student teachers, beginning teachers, and expert classroom managers, illustrates use of this research approach. The study shows how cohort and case study components can be included in a study of teacher development in ways which allow the generalizability of the insights and findings to be studied with cross-sectional and longitudinal cohort data. The study resulted in identification of five management approaches for classifying belief, advice, and self-description responses and resulted in construction of five management schema types that trace development changes. A conference was held to develop a plan of research into rural education in Australia and to form a consortium of rural education researchers. Part I of this proceedings contains an introductory paper, "Rural Education: The State of the Art" (Steve Clark), which analyzes research in rural education in Australia in recent decades with regard to four themes: schooling (teachers, students, school-community relationships, accommodation); technology; educational delivery (equal opportunity, curriculum, decentralization, service delivery, models); and the dichotomy between education in rural areas and rural education. Part II contains papers or summaries of papers on Australian rural research, criteria for prioritizing research, education of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, education and training needs of rural women and girls, applications of communications technology in education, symbiotic relationships between rural schools and their communities, education in rural Scotland, national assessment of the Country Areas Program, and a model of educational delivery in remote areas. Part III outlines the "think tank" discussion and decision making process; summarizes working groups and plenary sessions; presents reflections of working group members; lists and ranks all research recommendations of the working groups; and lists immediate research priorities in the areas of schooling, community, delivery, technology, and special needs groups.
