Due to the emergence of trade unionism throughout the U.S. industry, new needs and new jobs were created for international unions. The objective of the training of union stewards in the pulp and paper industry is to stimulate activity among the men and women who represent the local union. The activity will depends upon the local union and the location of the community.

Unlike scholars in many other disciplines, economists show little organized concern for preserving disciplinary archives. Consider the contrast between the community of mathematicians and the community of economists: the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America have embarked on a joint project to preserve official archives and to advise individuals and groups about the preservation of personal and organization-related papers: these two large organizations have recognized that mathematicians' "personal papers and the records of mathematical institutions and organizations are a source for an understanding of history." Generally, donors are asked to sign an agreement that gives property of the papers to the repository; rarely do repositories accept collections on loan or deposit. Before signing such an agreement, one should become familiar with the repository's policies on availability and publication of the papers. Most repositories are willing to attempt to address any concerns one may have, such as a desire to restrict part of the collection to protect the privacy of others.

Women's groups in unions are collective, spaces within which women seek to advance their concerns and access empowering positions. This paper examines their pursuit of gender equality in unions. The need to explore unions and women's groups is heightened by women's significance as a source of union membership, and the connection between union revitalization and responsiveness to women. The paper uses case studies of two unions, MSF and USDAW, and seven women's groups. The analysis is structured by a typology of two frameworks: (i) a typology of gendered equality ideas derived from various literatures, and (ii) the dynamic and linked dimensions of Hyman's (1994) union organization model. The article deals with three agreements signed by the United Wall Paper Crafts of North America in New York City. This association was established by a consolidation of two smaller national unions which are the National Association of Machine Printers and Color Mixers of the U.S. and the National Print Cutters' Association of America. The first contract deals with printers and color mixers and covers 300 mechanics in 19 industrial areas. The second deals with 125 printer cutters in a single factory. Lastly, the third contract covers 150 print cutters employed in the shops of print-cutting entrepreneurs.

There's science journalism and science writing, and those are two different things, says Deb Blum, president of the U.S. National Association of Science Writers (NASW), which promotes both roles. Blum says that journalism is undergoing a revival that reflects an upturn in U.S. advertising dollars.

This article summarizes the report of the managing editor of the American Economic Review journal, a publication of the American Economic Association, for 1978. The number of papers submitted this year is 649, compared with 690 in 1977. Submissions to the Review were at their highest (879) in 1970, and on average have been declining ever since. We printed 108 papers in 1978, 6 fewer than the preceding year. There is a backlog of 85 accepted papers, 28 will appear March 1979, and the remainder in June or September. The backlog of unprocessed manuscripts has remained at six months. That is, as of December 31, nearly all manuscripts received before the preceding June 30 have been processed. The authors have received some type of decision. It is not possible to cut this delay time further. The delay time may nevertheless account for the decline in the number of manuscripts submitted. I have discussed methods of speeding up the review process with members of the Board of Editors, with my assistants, and with the Executive Committee. Each proposal runs up against the problem of cost and satisfactory standard of performance. Because the Review is an association journal, papers cannot be rejected on the basis of a cursory examination.

President of the American Sociological Society Louis Wirth is planning for a Section on Contributed Papers for the next annual meeting that is to be held in New York from December 28 to 30, December, 1947. Although this Section is particularly de- signed for those younger members of the Society, including graduate students, who have not yet had an opportunity to appear on the pro- gram in other sections, contributions from other members of the Society will be welcome. Since this Committee is working closely with the Committee on Research, it is being urged that members who have completed research papers suitable for oral presentation and which do not fall within the scope of other Sections be offered for consideration in the Section on Contributed Papers.

The article presents a report from the Committee on Economic Education of the American Economic Association.
