BACKGROUND: Mental arithmetic analysis based on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals can help to understand some disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, arithmetic disorder, or autism spectrum disorder in which learning is difficult. Most mental computation detection and classification systems rely on the characteristics of a single channel, however, the understanding of the connections between EEG channels, which certainly contains valuable information, is still evolving. The methods presented in this paper are the result of a research project that introduces an alternative method for better and faster receipt of information from the EEG signals of individuals, which are generally complex and nonlinear. METHODS: The EEGs of 66 healthy individuals were recorded in two rest modes and mental task a designed, with a sampling frequency of 500 Hz. To classify these two modes, we extracted features from our recordings to differentiate the EEG signals of these two groups in a single channel as well as combine possible channels. The new method that was proposed was the extraction of several geometric features from Poincaré design analysis, which used the necessary comparison t-test to determine brain differences, with a significance level of less than 0.05 in the state of mental calculations and facial rest. Also, an artificial neural network (ANN) has been used for automatic learning and diagnosis in the two mentioned modes. RESULTS: The results of this paper show that by using a combination of geometric properties (sides, angles, shortest distance, slope, and coefficients of the third-degree equation) using selected channels (FP1, F7, C4, O1) can achieve 100 % accuracy. The sensitivity reached 100 %. As well as 100 % feature. CONCLUSIONS: With the help of mental calculation, it is possible to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate and rehabilitation people who have lost the function of a part of their brain due to a disease in this field (Tab. 6, Fig. 15, Ref. 45). Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the neural, behavioral, and physiological systems of the brain. This disease is also known as tremor. The common symptoms of this disease are a slowness of movement known as 'bradykinesia', loss of automatic movements, speech/writing changes, and difficulty with walking at early stages. To solve these issues and to enhance the diagnostic process of PD, machine learning (ML) algorithms have been implemented for the categorization of subjective disease and healthy controls (HC) with comparable medical appearances. To provide a far-reaching outline of data modalities and artificial intelligence techniques that have been utilized in the analysis and diagnosis of PD, we conducted a literature analysis of research papers published up until 2022. A total of 112 research papers were included in this study, with an examination of their targets, data sources and different types of datasets, ML algorithms, and associated outcomes. The results showed that ML approaches and new biomarkers have a lot of promise for being used in clinical decision-making, resulting in a more systematic and informed diagnosis of PD. With the increase in volume of data and presence of structured and unstructured data in the biomedical filed, there is a need for building models which can handle complex & non-linear relations in the data and also predict and classify outcomes with higher accuracy. Deep learning models are one of such models which can handle complex and nonlinear data and are being increasingly used in the biomedical filed in the recent years. Deep learning methodology evolved from artificial neural networks which process the input data through multiple hidden layers with higher level of abstraction. Deep Learning networks are used in various fields such as image processing, speech recognition, fraud deduction, classification and prediction. Objectives of this paper is to provide an overview of Deep Learning Models and its application in the biomedical domain using R Statistical software Deep Learning concepts are illustrated by using the R statistical software package. Deep learning has enabled significant advancements in the classification of remote sensing images; however, the task of classifying images in remote sensing remains a formidable challenge because of the high item diversity and complexity that result from spatial and temporal combination and connection. The problem of insufficient differentiation of feature representations generated by deep learning remains, which is mostly due to the similarity and variety of inter-class and intra-class images, respectively. This paper introduces a novel hexagonal network architecture called DenseNet-169, which is based on end-to-end convolutional methods (Bi-LSTM and RNN model) known as CRLSTM-Hexnet. The proposed model comprises three distinct components: (1) a module for extracting features, (2) a feature selection module utilizing the Harris Hawk optimization (HHO) algorithm, and (3) a sub-network based on LSTM and RNN, incorporating a class attention module learning layer. Variable selection is one of the most important contents of machine learning research and a large number of variable selection methods have been proposed at present. From deep learning perspective, we propose a new variable selection method based on multi-layer artificial neural networks in this paper. The method propagates errors gained form a trained network model through the network from output layer to input layer and the values gained by input layer give information about the relative contribution. The variables with big contribution value are selected, which we call neural inverse propagation (NIP). Specifically, after training a neural network, the gained errors between the actual network outputs and the desired outputs go through the network from top to down and arrive at the input layer. The absolute values gained by input units provide information about the relative importance (contribution) of input units, which is that the larger the value is, the more important the corresponding input variable is. We remove k variables corresponding to the first k minimum absolute value gained by input units to the predictive variables, to perform variable selection. The efficiency of the proposed method is illustrated through its application to classification and regression tasks on a number of synthetic datasets and a real-world image classification dataset. In the conventional backpropagation (BP) learning algorithm used for the training of the connecting weights of the artificial neural network (ANN), a fixed slope−based sigmoidal activation function is used. This limitation leads to slower training of the network because only the weights of different layers are adjusted using the conventional BP algorithm. To accelerate the rate of convergence during the training phase of the ANN, in addition to updates of weights, the slope of the sigmoid function associated with artificial neuron can also be adjusted by using a newly developed learning rule. To achieve this objective, in this paper, new BP learning rules for slope adjustment of the activation function associated with the neurons have been derived. The combined rules both for connecting weights and slopes of sigmoid functions are then applied to the ANN structure to achieve faster training. In addition, two benchmark problems: classification and nonlinear system identification are solved using the trained ANN. The results of simulation‐based experiments demonstrate that, in general, the proposed new BP learning rules for slope and weight adjustments of ANN provide superior convergence performance during the training phase as well as improved performance in terms of root mean square error and mean absolute deviation for classification and nonlinear system identification problems. Owing to the increasing complexity of electrical systems, diagnostic techniques of cables used for connecting electrical elements are essential for system maintenance in order to prevent a failure that can cause significant impacts on the overall electrical systems. Multicore structures are typically used as control and instrumentation cables in nuclear power plants, and the failure of the control and instrumentation cables can result in a disaster such as a radiation leak. In this paper, a method for the diagnosis of multicore cables is proposed based on the reflectometry. The diagnosis relates to the classification of defective cores in joint, which is one of the weakest parts in cable systems. The reflected signals obtained through reflectometry are converted into images by an advanced image processing algorithm, and the images are classified using artificial neural networks. The proposed method is demonstrated by experimental data using a real-world multicore cable. In the experiment, the faults are emulated similar to real-world defects using a potentiometer. AIM: The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of artifi cial neural network (ANN) in biomedical domain and compare it with the logistic regression model. METHODS: Artifi cial neural network models and logistic regression models were created and compared using a sample of a modified dataset adapted to the dataset from Framingham Heart Study. R statistical software package is used to create and compare the models. RESULTS: The results indicated that the ANN model is more accurate in classifying the dependent variable than the logistic regression model (84.4 % vs 82.9 %). Aim/Purpose This paper aims to analyze the availability and pricing of perishable farm produce before and during the lockdown restrictions imposed due to Covid-19. This paper also proposes machine learning and deep learning models to help the farmers decide on an appropriate market to sell their farm produce and get a fair price for their product. Background Developing countries like India have regulated agricultural markets governed by country-specific protective laws like the Essential Commodities Act and the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) Act. These regulations restrict the sale of agricultural produce to a predefined set of local markets. Covid-19 pandemic led to a lockdown during the first half of 2020 which resulted in supply disruption and demand-supply mismatch of agricultural commodities at these local markets. These demand-supply dynamics led to disruptions in the pricing of the farm produce leading to a lower price realization for farmers. Hence it is essential to analyze the impact of this disruption on the pricing of farm produce at a granular level. Moreover, the farmers need a tool that guides them with the most suitable market/city/town to sell their farm produce to get a fair price. Methodology One hundred and fifty thousand samples from the agricultural dataset, released by the Government of India, were used to perform statistical analysis and identify the supply disruptions as well as price disruptions of perishable agricultural produce. In addition, more than seventeen thousand samples were used to implement and train machine learning and deep learning models that can predict and guide the farmers about the appropriate market to sell their farm produce. In essence, the paper uses descriptive analytics to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on agricultural produce pricing. The paper explores the usage of prescriptive analytics to recommend an appropriate market to sell agricultural produce. Contribution Five machine learning models based on Logistic Regression, K-Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, and Gradient Boosting, and three deep learning models based on Artificial Neural Networks were implemented. The performance of these models was compared using metrics like Precision, Recall, Accuracy, and F1-Score. Findings Among the five classification models, the Gradient Boosting classifier was the optimal classifier that achieved precision, recall, accuracy, and F1 score of 99%. Out of the three deep learning models, the Adam optimizer-based deep neural network achieved precision, recall, accuracy, and F1 score of 99%. Recommendations for Practitioners Gradient boosting technique and Adam-based deep learning model should be the preferred choice for analyzing agricultural pricing-related problems. Recommendations for Researchers Ensemble learning techniques like Random Forest and Gradient boosting perform better than non-Ensemble classification techniques. Hyperparameter tuning is an essential step in developing these models and it improves the performance of the model. Impact on Society Statistical analysis of the data revealed the true nature of demand and supply and price disruption. This analysis helps to assess the revenue impact borne by the farmers due to Covid-19. The machine learning and deep learning models help the farmers to get a better price for their crops. Though the dataset used in this paper is related to India, the outcome of this research work applies to many developing countries that have similar regulated markets. Hence farmers from developing countries across the world can benefit from the outcome of this research work. Current artificial neural network image recognition techniques use all the pixels of an image as input. In this paper, we present an efficient method for handwritten digit recognition that involves extracting the characteristics of a digit image by coding each row of the image as a decimal value, i.e., by transforming the binary representation into a decimal value. This method is called the decimal coding of rows. The set of decimal values calculated from the initial image is arranged as a vector and normalized; these values represent the inputs to the artificial neural network. The approach proposed in this work uses a multilayer perceptron neural network for the classification, recognition, and prediction of handwritten digits from 0 to 9. In this study, a dataset of 1797 samples were obtained from a digit database imported from the Scikit-learn library. Backpropagation was used as a learning algorithm to train the multilayer perceptron neural network. Class imbalance is one of the well-known challenges in machine learning. Class imbalance occurs when one class dominates the other class in terms of the number of observations. Due to this imbalance, conventional classifiers fail to classify the minority class correctly. The challenges become even more severe when class overlap occurs in imbalanced data. Though literature is available to sequentially deal with class imbalance and class overlap, these methods are quite complex and not so efficient. In this paper, we propose an overlap-sensitive artificial neural network that can handle the problem of class overlapping and class imbalance simultaneously, along with noisy and outlier observations. The strength of this method lies in identifying the overlapping observations rather than the region and in not using multiple classifiers unlike the other existing methods. The key idea of the proposed method is in weighing the observations based on its location in the feature space before training the neural network. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated on 12 simulated data sets and 23 real-life data sets and compared with other well known methods.The results clearly indicate the strength and ability of the proposed method for a wide variety of imbalance ratio and levels of overlapping. In this paper, a hybrid strategy is introduced for detecting and classifying the High Impedance Fault in Power Distribution System. For hybridization, Gravitational Search Algorithm is combined with Artificial Neural Network to crease the classification performance. The ANN is utilized to characterize the blame signal from the reference signal and the execution is enhanced in view of the GSA calculation. The yield of the proposed method is recognized and arranged whether it is HIF fault or no-fault. At first, the ordinary practices of the appropriation framework are assessed. After that, the deficiencies are connected and the signals are measured. At that point, these are given to the contribution of the enhanced ANN procedure, which gives the dataset to breaking down the framework exhibitions. Recently, Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) have been extensively popular for employing Electroencephalography (EEG) signals to control devices with different applications. The use of BCIs currently involves for lots of applications to help the disabilities who cannot communicate with other people, as it is an alternative way for communication by passing the need of speech. Although the applications to spell the character with BCI systems (e.g., P300-speller, SSVEP-speller, Hex-O-spell) have been already developed, but these techniques are not flexible in the real scenarios because they require the stimulus all the time or stopping the activity to focus on the limb movement in order to provide the accuracy of brain responses. In this paper, the feasibility of brainwave classification for the applications of character-writing by considering only the EEG signals without the need of stimulus unlike the literature is newly introduced. This paper adopts a classification technique named Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and focuses on two different characters; straight line and circle. From the experimental results, the suitable position of electrodes are the pair of electrodes (F3 and F4) at the frontal lobe, which provide the best result as compared to other areas due to its important role in perception, maintenance and revival of the information. The experimental results indicate that the classification accuracy of the proposed technique is about 70%, which in turn leads to a significant achievement for the development of character-writing applications. This paper presents an improved opposition-based Particle Swarm Optimizer (PSO) with partial opposition-based learning. The partial opposition-based learning scheme is a new form of opposition-based learning and it is employed to improve the performance. Nowadays, the artificial neural network (ANN), an important machine learning tool, is used in medicine especially in medical disease diagnosis. ANN training is a complex task and a training algorithm has a significant role in ANN's performance. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is applied in training of Multi-Layer Feed-Forward Neural Network (FFNN) for classification task in medical data mining. The classification task is carried out on 15 well-known medical data sets. A comparative study has been made with Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm, Artificial Bee Colony, Trigonometric Mutation Differential Evolution, basic PSO and other nine opposition-based PSO algorithms. Increased utilization of nonlinear loads and fault event on the power system have resulted in a decline in the quality of power provided to the customers. It is fundamental to recognize and distinguish the power quality disturbances in the distribution system. To recognize and distinguish the power quality disturbances, the development of high protection schemes is required. This paper presents an optimal protection scheme for power quality event prediction and classification in the distribution system. The proposed protection scheme combines the performance of both the salp swarm optimization and artificial neural network. Here, artificial neural network is utilized in two phases with the objective function of prediction and classification of the power quality events. The first phase is utilized for recognizing the healthy or unhealthy condition of the system under various situations. Artificial neural network is utilized to perceive the system signal's healthy or unhealthy condition under different circumstances. In the second phase, artificial neural network performs the classification of the unhealthy signals to recognize the right power quality event for assurance. In this phase, the artificial neural network learning method is enhanced by utilizing salp swarm optimization based on the minimum error objective function. The proposed method performs an assessment procedure to secure the system and classify the optimal power quality event which occurs in the distribution system. At that point, the proposed work is executed in the MATLAB/Simulink platform and the performance of the proposed system is compared with different existing techniques like Multiple Signal Classification-Artificial Neural Network (MUSIC-ANN), and Genetic Algorithm - Artificial Neural Network (GA-ANN). Most of classification, quality evaluation or grading of the flue-cured tobacco leaves are manually operated, which relies on the judgmental experience of experts, and inevitably limited by personal, physical and environmental factors. The classification and the quality evaluation are therefore subjective and experientially based. In this paper, an automatic classification method of tobacco leaves based on the digital image processing and the fuzzy sets theory is presented. A grading system based on image processing techniques was developed for automatically inspecting and grading flue-cured tobacco leaves. This system uses machine vision for the extraction and analysis of color, size, shape and surface texture. Fuzzy comprehensive evaluation provides a high level of confidence in decision making based on the fuzzy logic. The neural network is used to estimate and forecast the membership function of the features of tobacco leaves in the fuzzy sets. The experimental results of the two-level fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) show that the accuracy rate of classification is about 94% for the trained tobacco leaves, and the accuracy rate of the non-trained tobacco leaves is about 72%. Polymer based textile composites have gained much attention in recent years and gradually transformed the growth of industries especially automobiles, construction, aerospace and composites. The inclusion of natural polymeric fibres as reinforcement in carbon fibre reinforced composites manufacturing delineates an economic way, enhances their surface, structural and mechanical properties by providing better bonding conditions. Almost all textile-based products are associated with quality, price and consumer's satisfaction. Therefore, classification of textiles products and fibre reinforced polymer composites is a challenging task. This paper focuses on the classification of various problems in textile processes and fibre reinforced polymer composites by artificial neural networks, genetic algorithm and fuzzy logic. Moreover, their limitations associated with state-of-the-art processes and some relatively new and sequential classification methods are also proposed and discussed in detail in this paper. (1) Background: The authenticity of eggs in relation to the housing system of laying hens is susceptible to food fraud due to the potential for egg mislabeling. (2) Methods: A total of 4188 egg yolks, obtained from four different breeds of laying hens housed in colony cage, barn, free-range, and organic systems, were analyzed using 1H NMR spectroscopy. The data of the resulting 1H NMR spectra were used for different machine learning methods to build classification models for the four housing systems. (3) Results: The comparison of the seven computed models showed that the support vector machine (SVM) model gave the best results with a cross-validation accuracy of 98.5%. The test of classification models with eggs from supermarkets showed that only a maximum of 62.8% of samples were classified according to the housing system labeled on the eggs. (4) Conclusion: The classification models developed in this study included the largest sample size compared to the literature. The SVM model is most suitable for evaluating 1H NMR data in terms of the hen housing system. In this paper, the classification of the effect of irradiation with the number of different UV-A lamps (0.20, 40, 60 and lumens) on the variation of L*, a* and b* was investigated using input data L *, a* and b* with the artificial neural network. In this experiment, to the classification two networks of radial basic and multi-layered perceptron functionalities with the hyperbolic tangent activation function in one and two hidden layers were used. According to the results obtained, the best value for R and Percent Correct for the number of lamp 0 (Percent Correct = 100 - R2= 0.652, lamp number 20 (Percent Correct = 100 - R2= 9999), for lamp number 40 (Percent Correct = 100 - R2= 0.652) and for lamp number 60 were also (Percent Correct = 100 - R2 = 0.9994). Also, the highest numbers of correctly detected data for the number of lamp in the number of 20 were observed in the MLP network, and this network has been able to categorize 100% for the total number of 0, 20, 40, and 60 correctly. Generally, the MLP neural network is better than the RBF network, and the network with 4 and 8 neurons in the hidden layer is appropriate, and the network with 1 layer and 2 layers has acceptable accuracy for classification. Turning is a widely used machining process, but the process complexity and uncertainty lead to empirical modelling techniques being preferred over physics-based models for predicting the process performance. The literature reveals that empirical methods such as artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector regression (SVR), regression analysis and fuzzy logic have been extensively applied in the modelling of turning process. The present work introduces genetic programming (GP) for the modelling of turning, but it is observed that the optimal models selected from the GP population based on training and validation errors do not perform well on testing data (unseen samples). Selecting the best GP model from the population of models is therefore a vital step. In view of this, the classification-driven model selection approach of GP (C-GP) is proposed in this paper. In this methodology, potential classification techniques such as Bayes multinomial, partitioning and regression trees, classification and regression trees and decision trees are integrated with GP to predict the class (best or bad) of the GP models. The model that is classified as the 'best' by the most number of classification techniques is selected, and its performance is compared to those from ANN and SVR. Among numerous functions performed by the battery management system (BMS), online estimation of the state of health (SOH) is an essential and challenging task to be accomplished periodically. In electric vehicle (EV) applications, accurate SOH estimation minimizes failure risk and improves reliability by predicting battery health conditions. The challenge of accurate estimation of SOH is based on the uncertain dynamic operating condition of the EVs and the complex nonlinear electrochemical characteristics exhibited by the lithium-ion battery. This paper presents an artificial neural network (ANN) classifier experimentally validated for the SOH estimation of lithium-ion batteries. The ANN-based classifier model is trained experimentally at room temperature under dynamic variable load conditions. Based on SOH characterization, the training is done using features such as the relative values of voltage, state of charge (SOC), state of energy (SOE) across a buffer, and the instantaneous states of SOC and SOE. At implementation, due to the slow dynamics of SOH, the algorithm is triggered on a large-scale periodicity to extract these features into buffers. The features are then applied as input to the trained model for SOH estimation. The classifier is validated experimentally under dynamic varying load, constant load, and step load conditions. The model accuracies for validation data are 96.2%, 96.6%, and 93.8% for the respective load conditions. It is further demonstrated that the model can be applied on multiple cell types of similar specifications with an accuracy of about 96.7%. The performance of the model analyzed with the confusion matrices is consistent with the requirements of the automotive industry. The classifier was tested on a Texas F28379D microcontroller unit (MCU) board. The result shows that an average real-time execution speed of 8.34 µs is possible with a negligible memory occupation. Energy performance certification is an important tool for the assessment and improvement of energy efficiency in buildings. In this context, estimating building energy demand also in a quick and reliable way, for different combinations of building features, is a key issue for architects and engineers who wish, for example, to benchmark the performance of a stock of buildings or optimise a refurbishment strategy. This paper proposes a methodology for (i) the automatic estimation of the building Primary Energy Demand for space heating ( P E D h ) and (ii) the characterization of the relationship between the P E D h value and the main building features reported by Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs). The proposed methodology relies on a two-layer approach and was developed on a database of almost 90,000 EPCs of flats in the Piedmont region of Italy. First, the classification layer estimates the segment of energy demand for a flat. Then, the regression layer estimates the P E D h value for the same flat. A different regression model is built for each segment of energy demand. Four different machine learning algorithms (Decision Tree, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, Artificial Neural Network) are used and compared in both layers. Compared to the current state-of-the-art, this paper brings a contribution in the use of data mining techniques for the asset rating of building performance, introducing a novel approach based on the use of independent data-driven models. Such configuration makes the methodology flexible and adaptable to different EPCs datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed methodology can estimate the energy demand with reasonable errors, using a small set of building features. Moreover, the use of Decision Tree algorithm enables a concise interpretation of the quantitative rules used for the estimation of the energy demand. The methodology can be useful during both designing and refurbishment of buildings, to quickly estimate the expected building energy demand and set credible targets for improving performance. Abstract: An efficient predictive plan is needed for any industry because it can optimize the resources management and improve the economy plant, by reducing unnecessary costs and increasing the level of safety. A great percentage of breakdowns in the productive processes are caused for gear box, they began its deterioration from early stages, also called incipient level. The extracted features from the DWT are used as inputs in a neural network for classification purposes. The results show that the developed method can reliably diagnose different conditions of the gear box. The wavelet transform is used to represent all possible types of transients in vibration signals generated by faults in a gear box. It is shown that the transform provides a powerful tool for condition monitoring and fault diagnosis. The vibration signal of a spur bevel gear box in different conditions is used to demonstrate the application of various wavelets in feature extraction. In this paper fault diagnostics of spur bevel gear box is treated as a pattern classification problem. The major steps in pattern classification are feature extraction, and classification. Having more hidden units than necessary can produce a neural network that has a poor generalization. This paper proposes a new algorithm for pruning unnecessary hidden units away from the single-hidden layer feedforward neural networks, resulting in a Spartan network. Our approach is simple and easy to implement, yet produces a very good result. The idea is to train the network until it begins to lose its generalization. Then the algorithm measures the sensitivity and automatically prunes away the most irrelevant unit. We define this sensitivity as the absolute difference between the desirable output and the output of the pruned network. Unlike other pruning methods, our algorithm is distinct in calculating the sensitivity from the validation set, instead of the training set, without increasing the asymptotic time complexity of the back-propagation algorithm. In addition, for a classification problem, we raise a point that the sensitivities of some well-known pruning algorithms may still underestimate the irrelevance of hidden unit even though the validation set is used in measuring the sensitivity. We resolve this problem by considering the number of misclassified patterns as the main concern. The Spartan simplicity algorithm is applied to three artificial and seven standard benchmarks. Learning with very large-scale datasets is always necessary when handling real problems using artificial neural networks. However, it is still an open question how to balance computing efficiency and learning stability, when traditional neural networks spend a large amount of running time and memory to solve a problem with large-scale learning dataset. In this paper, we report the first evaluation of neural network distributed-learning strategies in large-scale classification over protein secondary structure. Our accomplishments include: (1) an architecture analysis on distributed-learning, (2) the development of scalable distributed system for large-scale dataset classification, (3) the description of a novel distributed-learning strategy based on chips, (4) a theoretical analysis of distributed-learning strategies for structure-distributed and data-distributed, (5) an investigation and experimental evaluation of distributed-learning strategy based-on chips with respect to time complexity and their effect on the classification accuracy of artificial neural networks. It is demonstrated that the novel distributed-learning strategy is better-balanced in parallel computing efficiency and stability as compared with the previous algorithms. Parameter identification for complex systems of nonlinear nature is challenging due to the complicated process structure and large number of parameters with different identifiability. The scope of this work is to develop a model-based parameter identification method for a nonlinear industrial winding system. The proposed parameter identification method consists of two key steps: First, enhanced whale optimization algorithm (EWOA) was proposed to alleviate the issues of low search performance and premature convergence of WOA, for which the following enhancements were made to WOA: (1) improvements to the bubble-net strategy of its mathematical model, (2) amendments to the humpback whales' movements in the direction of the best whales, and (3) imitation of the schooling behavior of humpback whales when chasing prey. Second, EWOA was acted as a training method for artificial neural networks (ANNs)-type multilayer perceptron (MLP), a method referred to as EWOA-MLP. In this, EWOA was applied to train ANNs in order to mitigate the main difficulties of ANNs due to their nonlinear nature and unknown optimal set of control parameters (i.e., weights and biases). The performance of the proposed EWOA-MLP was assessed in modeling the subsystems of the winding process under study and in solving fifteen classification datasets. The effectiveness of EWOA-MLP in both modeling and classification studies was judged by several pertinent assessment metrics. Results of comparison of the proposed EWOA-MLP with other promising methods firmly confirm the promising performance of EWOA-MLP for both local optima avoidance and convergence rate, proving its value and superiority. The feasibility and usefulness of frequency domain fusion of data from multiple vibration sensors installed on typical industrial rotating machines, based on coherent composite spectrum (CCS) as well as poly-coherent composite spectrum (pCCS) techniques, have been well-iterated by earlier studies. However, all previous endeavours have been limited to rotor faults, thereby raising questions about the proficiency of the approach for classifying faults related to other critical rotating machine components such as gearboxes. Besides the restriction in scope of the founding CCS and pCCS studies on rotor-related faults, their diagnosis approach was manually implemented, which could be unrealistic when faced with routine condition monitoring of multi-component industrial rotating machines, which often entails high-frequency sampling at multiple locations. In order to alleviate these challenges, this paper introduced an automated framework that encompassed feature generation through CCS, data dimensionality reduction through principal component analysis (PCA), and faults classification using artificial neural network (ANN). The outcomes of the automated approach are a set of visualised decision maps representing individually simulated scenarios, which simplifies and illustrates the decision rules of the faults characterisation framework. Additionally, the proposed approach minimises diagnosis-related downtime by allowing asset operators to easily identify anomalies at their incipient stages without necessarily possessing vibration monitoring expertise. Building upon the encouraging results obtained from the preceding part of this approach that was limited to well-known rotor-related faults, the proposed framework was significantly extended to include experimental and open-source gear fault data. The results show that in addition to early established rotor-related faults classification, the approach described here can also effectively and automatically classify gearbox faults, thereby improving the robustness. A broad variety of real-world problems have been solved using multilayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural networks (ANNs). Optimization techniques aid ANNs to select suitable weights and achieve correct results. Recently, the kidney-inspired algorithm (KA) has been proposed for optimization problems. This algorithm is based on the filtration, reabsorption, secretion, and excretion processes that take place in the kidneys of the human body. In the KA, the value of α in the filtration rate formula is a constant value in the range of [0, 1] that is set in the initialization stage of the algorithm. In this paper, an improved KA for optimization of the ANN model is presented in which the filtration rate is controlled by changing the value of α from minimum to maximum during the search process, which helps in achieving a better balance between exploration and exploitation in the algorithm. In this algorithm if more solutes are filtered and moved to filtered blood it means that the algorithm has more exploration. In contrast, if more solutes move to waste it means that more exploitation is performed by the algorithm . In addition, the separate use of three chaotic maps instead of a random number in the movement formula of the modified KA is investigated in order to assess the ability of each map to help to achieve superior results. The proposed method is tested on benchmark classification and time series prediction problems. The method is also applied to a real-world rainfall forecasting problem. Malware creators generate new malicious software samples by making minor changes in previously generated code, in order to reuse malicious code, as well as to go unnoticed from signature-based antivirus software. As a result, various families of variations of the same initial code exist today. Visualization of compiled executables for malware analysis has been proposed several years ago. Visualization can greatly assist malware classification and requires neither disassembly nor code execution. Moreover, new variations of known malware families are instantly detected, in contrast to traditional signature-based antivirus software. This paper addresses the problem of identifying variations of existing malware visualized as images. A new malware detection system based on a two-level Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is proposed. The classification is based on file and image features. The proposed system is tested on the 'Malimg' dataset consisting of the visual representation of well-known malware families. From this set some important image features are extracted. Based on these features, the ANN is trained. Then, this ANN is used to detect and classify other samples of the dataset. Malware families creating a confusion are classified by a second level of ANNs. Breast cancer (BC) mostly develops on women breast region. Regular check ups are crucial for early detection and treatment of this cancer type. Pathologist performs the diagnosis of the breast cancer. Recent computer-aided methods for breast cancer diagnosis allow another and faster way of breast cancer diagnosis. Therefore, improvement of computer-aided methods has been developing for the breast cancer detection. In this paper, a method for automatic classification of images for breast cancer diagnosis is presented. Classification of the images is achieved using Back Propagation Neural Network (BPPN). The performance of the automatic classification of the breast cancer images is further improved by using radial basis neural networks (RBFN). Recently, many methods based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) or deep neural networks (DNNs) have been proposed to accurately predict the cycle time of a job. However, the prediction mechanism of an ANN is difficult to understand and communicate for users, which limits its acceptability (or usefulness). To solve this problem, a two-stage explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) approach is proposed in this study to better explain a classification-based cycle time prediction method. In the proposed methodology, first, jobs are divided into several clusters. A scatter radar diagram is then designed to illustrate the classification result. Compared with existing XAI techniques, the scatter radar diagram meets more requirements for better interpretation. Subsequently, an ANN is constructed for each cluster to predict the cycle times of jobs in the cluster. A random forest is then constructed to approximate the prediction mechanism of the ANN. In existing practice, the random forest generates many decision rules to predict the cycle time of a job, which may cause confusion for the user. To solve this problem, a systematic procedure is established to re-organize these decision rules. In this way, the first few decision rules can provide most of the information, and the user does not have to read all the rules. The success of an artificial neural network (ANN) strongly depends on the variety of the connection weights and the network structure. Among many methods used in the literature to accurately select the network weights or structure in isolate; a few researchers have attempted to select both the weights and structure of ANN automatically by using metaheuristic algorithms. This paper proposes modified bat algorithm with a new solution representation for both optimizing the weights and structure of ANNs. The algorithm, which is based on the echolocation behaviour of bats, combines the advantages of population-based and local search algorithms. In this work, ability of the basic bat algorithm and some modified versions which are based on the consideration of the personal best solution in the velocity adjustment, the mean of personal best and global best solutions through velocity adjustment and the employment of three chaotic maps are investigated. These modifications are aimed to improve the exploration and exploitation capability of bat algorithm. Different versions of the proposed bat algorithm are incorporated to handle the selection of the structure as well as weights and biases of the ANN during the training process. We then use the Taguchi method to tune the parameters of the algorithm that demonstrates the best ability compared to the other versions. Six classifications and two time series benchmark datasets are used to test the performance of the proposed approach in terms of classification and prediction accuracy. Statistical tests demonstrate that the proposed method generates some of the best results in comparison with the latest methods in the literature. Abstract: An artificial neural network (ANN) is a mathematical model that is inspired by the operation of biological neural networks. However, this is typically considered a computational model. An ANN can easily adapt to multiple situations and extract information that is apparently hidden in a system. An ANN can be used in three basic configurations: mapping, auto-association and classification. An ANN in a mapping configuration can be used to model a two port system with inputs and outputs. Therefore, a vapor compression system can be modeled using an ANN in a mapping configuration. That is, some parameters from the compression system can be used for input while other parameters can be used as output. The simulation experiments include the design, training and validation of a set of ANNs to find the best architecture while minimizing over-fitting. This paper presents a new method to model a variable speed vapor compression system. This method accurately estimates the number of neurons in the hidden layer of an ANN. The analysis and the experimental results provide new insights to understand the dependency between the input and output parameters in a vapor compression system, concluding that the model can predict the energetic performance of a variable speed vapor compression system. Abstract: Modern power plants are all strongly dependent on reliable and accurate sensor readings for monitoring and control, thus making sensors an important part of any plant. Failing sensors can force a plant or component into non-optimal operation, cause complete shut-down of operation or in the worst case result in damage to components. Given their importance, sensors need regular calibration and maintenance, a time-consuming and therefore costly process. In this paper a method is presented for evaluating sensor accuracy which aims to minimize the need for calibration and at the same time avoid shut-downs due to sensor faults etc. The proposed method is based on training artificial neural networks as classifiers to recognize sensor drifts. The method is evaluated on two types of gas turbines, i.e., one single-shaft and one twin-shaft machine. The results show the method is capable of early detection of sensor drifts for both types of machines as well as accurate production of soft measurements. The findings suggest that the use of artificial neural networks for sensor validation could contribute to more cost-effective maintenance as well as to increased availability and reliability of power plants. Abstract: The management of atmospheric pollution using video is not yet widespread. However it is an efficient way to evaluate the polluting rejects coming from large industrial facilities when traditional captors are not usable. This paper presents a comparison of different classifiers for a monitoring system of polluting smokes. The data used in this work are stemming from a system of video analysis and signal processing. The database includes the pollution level of puffs of smoke defined by an expert. Six machine learning techniques are tested and compared to classify the puffs of smoke: k-nearest neighbour, naïve Bayes classifier, artificial neural network, decision tree, support vector machine and a fuzzy model. The parameters of each type of classifier are split into three categories: learned parameters, parameters determined by a first step of the experimentation, and parameters set by the programmer. We compare the results of the best classifier of each type depending on the size of the learning set. A part of the discussion concerns the robustness of the classifier facing the case where classes of interest are under-represented, as the high level of pollution in our data. Abstract: This paper proposes feature selection as an approach to deal with a bladder cancer data set with small sample size. Three feature selection methods and four classifiers were used to determine the best feature subsets that produce perfect classification accuracy. The smallest best feature subsets are used to build neural models with the small data set to achieve 100% training and testing accuracies. Therefore, the mega-trend-diffusion technique proposed by Li et al. to produce artificial samples is actually unnecessary. The similarity classifier proposed by Luukka was also applied to the small data set with the smallest best feature subsets to achieve 100% accuracy using only 4 samples (two with bladder cancer and two normal) for two selected p and m values. Given the same accuracy, using the best feature subsets selected is better than using all 13 features as done by Luukka. Furthermore, several indexes/methods commonly used in filtering feature selection methods were tested for their ability to find the best feature subsets for this particular small bladder cancer data set. Recently, artificial neural networks have been widely used for classification. It is important to optimize the weight parameters and topological structure of the neural network simultaneously. These two tasks are interdependent and should be solved at the same time to achieve a better result. However, existing works cannot balance the accuracy and diversity of neural networks very well. In this paper, a cooperative co-evolutionary algorithm is proposed to simultaneously evolve artificial neural network topology, neuron attributes, and connection weights. In the proposed algorithm, two effective strategies are proposed. First, the niche-based strategy is used in the evolutionary and cooperative process to refine the local search ability. In this way, a set of candidate networks with a higher level of output diversity is obtained. Second, a two-step comparison scheme is designed to acquire a compact ensemble network. Moreover, a fully connected weights matrix crossover scheme is used to avoid destroying the network structure. The proposed algorithm is tested on the benchmark classification problems in the UCI machine learning repository and compared with other state-of-the-art methods. The experimental results show that the proposed niche-based cooperative co-evolutionary ensemble neural network has a higher capability of generalization compared with other methods in six of nine kinds of classification problems. Reducing the computational load for training and classification procedures is a major problem in many pattern recognition approaches, such as artificial neural networks and support vector machines. Combining the multiple mirror classifiers is proven to be an efficient way to reduce the classification time. In this paper, we propose an approach that uses cooperative clustering method to construct mirror classifiers. With this procedure, the set of mirror point pairs with pre-determined size near the boundary of two classes is determined. Each mirror point pair constructs a small classifier. The minimum squared error based method and support vector machine based method are proposed to determine the weights for combining the multiple mirror classifiers. Experiments show that the training efficiency and classification efficiency are improved with a slight impact on generalization performance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Fast and robust classification of feature vectors is a crucial task in a number of real-time systems. A cellular neural/nonlinear network universal machine (CNN-UM) can be very efficient as a feature detector. The next step is to post-process the results for object recognition. This paper shows how a robust classification scheme based on adaptive resonance theory (ART) can be mapped to the CNN-UM. Moreover, this mapping is general enough to include different types of feed-forward neural networks. The designed analogic CNN algorithm is capable of classifying the extracted feature vectors keeping the advantages of the ART networks, such as robust, plastic and fault-tolerant behaviors. An analogic algorithm is presented for unsupervised classification with tunable sensitivity and automatic new class creation. The algorithm is extended for supervised classification. The presented binary feature vector classification is implemented on the existing standard CNN-UM chips for fast classification. Acne is common among young individuals. People with dark skin have a higher risk for developing pigmentary complications. Inflammation is an important factor in post-acne hyperpigmentation however other factors are also involved in developing this complication however these factors are not well studied. The aim of this study is to identify risk factors involved in post-acne hyperpigmentation. Clinical data related to acne, acne-related hyperpigmentation were collected. Data was analyzed for risk factors associated with acne pigmentation. Artificial neural network was used as predictive disease classifier for the outcome of pigmentation. Majority of patients in this study (339 patients) had dark skin phototypes (3 and 4). Post-acne hyperpigmentation was seen in more than 80% of patients. Females, darker skin color, severe acne, facial sites, and excessive sunlight exposure, squeezing or scratching lesions are important risk factors for post-acne hyperpigmentation. Post-acne hyperpigmentation is multifactorial. Several factors implicated in PAH are modifiable by adequate patient education (lesion trauma, excessive sunlight exposure). In the fresh fruit industry, identification of fruit cultivars and fruit quality is of vital importance. In the current study, nine peach cultivars (Dixon, Early Grande, Flordaprince, Flordastar, Flordaglo, Florda 834, TropicSnow, Desertred, and Swelling) were evaluated for differences in skin color, firmness, and size. Additionally, a multilayer perceptron (MLP) artificial neural network was applied for identification of the cultivars according to these attributes. The MLP was trained with an input layer including six input nodes, a single hidden layer with six hidden nodes, and an output layer with nine output nodes. A hyperbolic tangent activation function was used in the hidden layer and the cross entropy error was given because the softmax activation function was functional to the output layer. Results showed that the cross entropy error was 0.165. The peach identification process was significantly affected by the following variables in order of contribution (normalized importance): polar diameter (100%), L* (89.0), b* (88.0%), a° (78.5%), firmness (71.3%), and cross diameter (37.5.3%). TheMLPwas found to be a viable method of peach cultivar identification and classification because few identifying attributes were required and an overall classification accuracy of 100% was achieved in the testing phase. Measurements and quantitative discrimination of peach properties are provided in this research; these data may help enhance the processing efficiency and quality of processed peaches. Nowadays in e-commerce applications, aspect-based sentiment analysis has become vital, and every consumer started focusing on various aspects of the product before making the purchasing decision on online portals like Amazon, Walmart, Alibaba, etc. Hence, the enhancement of sentiment classification considering every aspect of products and services is in the limelight. In this proposed research, an aspect-based sentiment classification model has been developed employing sentiment whale-optimized adaptive neural network (SWOANN) for classifying the sentiment for key aspects of products and services. The accuracy of sentiment classification of the product and services has been improved by the optimal selection of weights of neurons in the proposed model. The promising results are obtained by analyzing the mobile phone review dataset when compared with other existing sentiment classification approaches such as support vector machine (SVM) and artificial neural network (ANN). The proposed work uses key features such as the positive opinion score, negative opinion score, and term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) for representing each aspect of products and services, which further improves the overall effectiveness of the classifier. This study aims to analyze the potential of the computer vision (CV) approach to classify eight canola varieties. The input images of eight canola varieties were CON-I, CON-II, CON-III, Pakola, Canola Raya, Rainbow, PARC Canola Hybrid, and Tarnab-III. A digital camera acquired these images on an open sunny day without any complex laboratory setup. First-order histogram features, second-order statistical texture features, binary features, spectral features of three bands were, blue (B), green (G), and red (R), were employed in the artificial neural network (ANN). A 10-fold stratified cross-validation method was used for classification.
