Background: Evidence from animal and human studies suggests glutamatergic dysfunction in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The purpose of this study was to investigate glutamate abnormalities in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLFPC) of individuals with PTSD using 7T MRS, which has better spectral resolution and signal-to-noise ratio than lower field strengths, thus allowing for better spectral quality and higher sensitivity. We hypothesized that individuals with PTSD would have lower glutamate levels compared to trauma-exposed individuals without PTSD and individuals without trauma exposure. Additionally, we explored potential alterations in other neurometabolites and the relationship between glutamate and psychiatric symptoms. Methods: Individuals with PTSD (n = 27), trauma-exposed individuals without PTSD (n = 27), and individuals without trauma exposure (n = 26) underwent 7T MRS to measure glutamate and other neurometabolites in the left DLPFC. The severities of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and dissociation symptoms were assessed. Results: We found that glutamate was lower in the PTSD and trauma-exposed groups compared to the group without trauma exposure. Furthermore, N -acetylaspartate (NAA) was lower and lactate was higher in the PTSD group compared to the group without trauma exposure. Glutamate was negatively correlated with depression symptom severity in the PTSD group. Glutamate was not correlated with PTSD symptom severity. Conclusion: In this first 7T MRS study of PTSD, we observed altered concentrations of glutamate, NAA, and lactate. Our findings provide evidence for multiple possible pathological processes in individuals with PTSD. High-field MRS offers insight into the neurometabolic alterations associated with PTSD and is a powerful tool to probe trauma- and stress-related neurotransmission and metabolism in vivo. Aim: Digital platforms such as YouTube are popular sources of health-related information. Although there are studies evaluating the quality of different online medical content, studies focusing on the quality of dementia-related content are limited. This study aimed to investigate the quality of YouTube videos related to dementia patient care. Material and Methods: Using the term "Dementia care" on the YouTube platform, 100 English videos that met the inclusion criteria were identified and analyzed. In addition to video popularity measurements, to evaluate content quality, the global quality scale (GQS), modified DISCERN scale, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) quality scale, and the patient education materials assessment tool for audio/visual materials (PEMAT-A/V) are used. Results: It was observed that most of the videos were uploaded by non-academic health institutions (36%) and health professionals (23%). When the content of the videos was evaluated, it was determined that general care strategies were the most common content with 52%. Scores indicating high levels of reliability and accuracy were determined on all applied content quality scales. Videos sourced from academic healthcare institutions were found to have the highest scores on content quality scales. In correlation analyses, video metrics such as duration, view ratio, number of comments, and video power index values were positively correlated with content quality scores. Conclusion: Videos about dementia patient care on YouTube generally exhibit high popularity and content quality. Introduction: People with Parkinson's Disease (PD) often show reduced anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) before voluntary steps, impacting their stability. The specific subphase within the APA stage contributing significantly to fall risk remains unclear. Methods: We analyzed center of pressure (CoP) trajectory parameters, including duration, length, and velocity, throughout gait initiation. This examination encompassed both the postural phase, referred to as anticipatory postural adjustment (APA) (APA1, APA2a, APA2b), and the subsequent locomotor phases (LOC). Participants were instructed to initiate a step and then stop (initiating a single step). Furthermore, we conducted assessments of clinical disease severity using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) and evaluated fall risk using Tinetti gait and balance scores during off-medication periods. Results: Freezing of gait (FOG) was observed in 18 out of 110 participants during the measurement of CoP trajectories. The Ramer-Douglas-Peucker algorithm successfully identified CoP displacement trajectories in 105 participants (95.5%), while the remaining 5 cases could not be identified due to FOG. Tinetti balance and gait score showed significant associations with levodopa equivalent daily dose, UPDRS total score, disease duration, duration (s) in APA2a (s) and LOC (s), length in APA1 (cm) and APA2b (cm), mediolateral velocity in APA1 (X) (cm/s), APA2a (X) (cm/s), APA2b (X) (cm/s) and LOC (X) (cm/s), and anterior-posterior velocity in APA2a (Z) (cm/s) and APA2b (Z) (cm/s). Multiple linear regression revealed that only duration (s) in APA2a and UPDRS total score was independently associated with Tinetti gait and balance score. Further mediation analysis showed that the duration (s) in APA2a served as a mediator between UPDRS total score and Tinetti balance and gait score (Sobel test, p = 0.047). Conclusion: APA2 subphase duration mediates the link between disease severity and fall risk in PD, suggesting that longer APA2a duration may indicate reduced control during gait initiation, thereby increasing fall risk. Background: Healthcare professionals appear to play a key role in shaping pregnant women's views and attitudes towards lifestyle issues, such as exercise. The aim of this study is to investigate the views and beliefs of Greek midwives and obstetricians regarding exercise during pregnancy. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted during the period of January 2022–March 2023. For this study, 237 Greek midwives and obstetricians employed in healthcare settings in Attica, Greece completed an anonymous and self-report questionnaire. Four different/independent models of multivariate analyses of variance were conducted. Results: The vast majority of these healthcare professionals (88.6%) believed that exercise during pregnancy is generally beneficial. According to the multivariate analyses, healthcare professionals with postgraduate/doctoral studies were more likely to believe that (a) exercise is generally beneficial (p = 0.03), (b) pregnant women should be informed about it (p = 0.028), (c) informing pregnant women is necessary/useful (p = 0.023), and (d) pregnant women showed interest in it (p = 0.034). Also, freelance midwives were more likely to believe that pregnant women should be informed about exercise (p = 0.006), and that they showed interest in it (p = 0.034). In addition, (a) freelance midwives (p = 0.050), and those who had experience in antenatal counselling (p = 0.037), as well as (b) obstetricians who were largely experienced in monitoring normal pregnancies (p = 0.001), were less likely to associate exercise during pregnancy with the occurrence of placental abruption. Conclusion: Alongside healthcare professionals' educational level, their professional setting and professional experience emerge as key factors and need to be considered when designing innovative interventions to support exercise during pregnancy. Spinal disorders are some of the most prevalent health concerns, especially among students. Based on student demographics, this cross-sectional study evaluated the correlation between functional tests (FTs) and spinal range of motion (ROM). This study included 206 students (age = 19.85 ± 1.80 years) from the Vasile Alecsandri University of Bacău. Participants' assessments were conducted using the following tests: (i) Ott, (ii) Schober, (iii) Stibor, (iv) finger-to-floor distance, (v) lateral flexion of the cervical and lumbar spine, and (vi) flexion of the cervical spine. Correlation analyses were evaluated using the Spearman correlation coefficient analysis. The results indicated a very strong relationship between lateral flexion of the lumbar spine on the left (LFLSL) and right (LFLSR) for all departments (r = 0.85 to 0.97, p < 0.05). There was a stronger relationship between FT results and spinal ROM for physical-education-department students compared to students from other departments (n = 17, r = −0.38 to 0.93, p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant correlation between FTs and spinal ROM based on age (p > 0.05). The study results provide evidence of the primary risk factors that predispose students to postural deviations. Background: Parents of children suffering from congenital heart disease experience high levels of stress and negative emotions. Therefore, recognition of parents' emotional states and their ways of coping with it is becoming more and more important. Methods: The study group consisted of 154 parents of newborns and infants with cyanotic congenital heart disease, before and after cardiac surgery (partial or full). To assess parental negative emotions, the level of stress, and strategies of coping with it, standardized questionnaires, such as HADS-M, PSS-10, and COPE, were used. Results: Stress levels in parents were high and associated with negative emotions (anxiety, depression, irritability), as well as the choice of non-constructive coping strategies, which was observed especially in younger parents. Reports have highlighted the role of supportive work environments in several nurse outcome measures, indicating a need for effective leadership styles that improve the nurse working environment. Authentic leadership is a relatively new concept in Arab work culture. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between authentic leadership demonstrated by nurse managers and work engagement among Jordanian registered nurses. A cross-sectional correlational design was employed. A sample of 238 registered nurses working in a public hospital in Jordan was collected. Data collection was performed by using the staff demographics questionnaire, the authentic leadership questionnaire (ALQ), and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES)-17 items. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were employed to analyze the data. The results showed a statistically significant positive correlation between authentic leadership and work engagement in the hierarchical regression analysis (B = 0.34, t = 5.54, p < 0.001). After controlling demographic variables, authentic leadership accounted for 11% of the additional variance above and beyond the 5% accounted for age, educational level, and work experience (change of R 2 = 0.11, p < 0.01). Nurses whose managers demonstrate higher levels of authentic leadership report more work engagement (r = 0.37, p < 0.001). Background: Alexithymia is the inability to identify and describe one's own emotions. Adolescents who suffer from Restrictive Eating Disorders (REDs) show a higher prevalence of alexithymia than the general population. Methods: The study explored the correlation between levels of alexithymia in mothers, fathers, and adolescents affected by REDs and patients' ability to recognize their emotions. The study also aimed to evaluate if patients' emotional distress can significantly impact the severity of their disorder and functioning measured by the Clinical Global Impression Scale - Severity (CGI-S) and the Children's Global Assessment Scale (CGAS). We enrolled 67 families of adolescents affected by REDs. Parents and patients' levels of alexithymia were assessed through the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). Spearman's correlation shows a statistically significant correlation between mothers and patients' levels of alexithymia. Results: Our findings also suggest that fathers and mothers' TAS scores correlate with each other. However, there is no statistically significant relationship between the influence of the TAS scores of fathers and sons/daughters. Conclusions: In conclusion, mothers' level of alexithymia could influence both fathers and patients' difficulty in identifying and describing their own emotions. This relationship can be investigated further when considering externally oriented thinking. Objective Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels are associated with serum lipid concentrations in the general nonpregnant population. Here, we aimed to establish trimester-specific reference intervals and to explore the associations of their variations within the specific reference intervals during pregnancy. Methods Trimester-specific reference intervals were established according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute EP28-A3c guidelines using a direct sampling method based on a large prospective cohort. After making one-to-one matches, correlation analyses between TSH and lipid index levels, especially within the reference intervals, were conducted. Result A total of 1648 pregnant women for TSH and 2045 subjects for lipids were recruited to establish the trimester-specific reference intervals. The upper reference limit (90% confidence interval) of TSH for pregnant women in the first trimester is 3.95 (3.66–4.29) mIU/L, which is very close to the default value (4.0 mIU/L) recommended by the American Thyroid Association in 2017. Apart from triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, TSH levels were positively associated with the serum concentrations of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, non–high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non–HDL-C), and remnant cholesterol (RC) either in the entire range or within the specific reference intervals. Of note, the positive correlations between TSH and non–HDL-C and RC were, albeit similarly weak (r  < 0.25), relatively more robust (P  < .001). Conclusion In this study, we showed positive correlations between TSH and lipid components within trimester-specific reference intervals, highlighting the need for the integrated management of pregnant women over age 35 and with nonoptimal lipid status in China. Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a main, highly prevalent, and challenging public health issue. Suboptimal self-care for type II diabetes can lead to poor glycemic control, complications, and even death. Objective: This study investigated the incidence of distress and its link with self-care habits of patients with diabetes type II. Methods: A correlational, cross-sectional design with a convenient sample of 200 patients was used to conduct this study. Three questionnaires were administered: (A) the demographic and medical data questionnaire; (B) diabetes self-care activities in brief; and (C) the diabetes distress scale in Arabic language. Results: The patients' mean age was 51.78 ± 11.34; 80% of patients practiced lower levels of diabetes self-care, and 37% of them had a high level of diabetes distress. Self-care is associated with diabetes distress (R = −0.152, p -value =.032). Conclusion: Self-care activities can help in the early detection and management of diabetes distress. Sustained self-care education is promising to minimize diabetes distress. Background and objective: This study aims to examine the role of neurovascular coupling (NVC) in vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) by investigating the relationship between white matter lesion (WML) burden, NVC, and cognitive deficits. Additionally, we aim to explore the potential of NVC as a tool for understanding the neural mechanisms underlying VCI. Methods: This study included thirty-eight small vessel disease cognitive impairment (SVCI) patients, 34 post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) patients, and 43 healthy controls (HC). Comprehensive assessments, including neuroimaging and neuropsychological testing, were conducted to evaluate cognitive function. WML burden was measured and correlated with NVC coefficients to examine the relationship between white matter pathology and NVC. Mediation analysis was employed to explore the link relationship between NVC, WML burden, and cognitive function. Results: The present study showed that NVC was significantly reduced in the SVCI and PSCI groups compared with HCs at both whole-brain and brain region level. The analysis revealed notable findings regarding NVC in relation to WML burden and cognitive function in VCI patients. Specifically, reduced NVC coefficients were observed within higher order brain systems responsible for cognitive control and emotion regulation. Mediation analysis demonstrated that NVC played a mediating role in the relationship between WML burden and cognitive impairment. Conclusion: This study reveals the mediating role of NVC in the relationship between WML burden and cognitive function in VCI patients. Background Intrinsic foot muscle (IFM) weakness can result in reduced foot function, making it crucial for clinicians to track IFM strength changes accurately. However, assessing IFM strength can be challenging for clinicians, as there is no clinically applicable direct measure of IFM strength that has been shown to be reliable and valid with the foot on the ground. Purpose The purpose was to investigate the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of a novel, budget-friendly IFM dynamometer and determine its agreement with a handheld dynamometer (HHD). The researchers also examined correlations of foot morphology and activity level to IFM strength. Study design Descriptive Laboratory Study Methods Two assessors measured IFM strength of 34 healthy volunteers (4 male, 30 female; age=21.14±2.57, height=164.66 ±7.62 cm, mass=64.45±11.93 kg) on two occasions 6.62±0.78 days apart with the novel dynamometer to assess intra- and inter-rater reliability. The HHD was used to measure IFM in the first session in order to assess validity. Results For the novel dynamometer, intra- and inter-rater reliability was moderate-to-excellent (ICC = 0.73 - 0.95), and the majority of the strength tests were within the 95% limits of agreement with the HHD. Wider foot morphology and a higher number of days walking over the prior seven days had small but significant correlations with IFM strength (dominant foot r = 0.34, non-dominant foot r = 0.39; r = -0.33, -0.39 respectively). Background: Psychological impact of COVID-19 is an emerging area of interest among researchers worldwide. We aimed to study the prevalence of anxiety and depression among COVID-19 survivors and its association with individual characteristics including demographic variables. Methods: One hundred and fifty COVID-19 survivors from a tertiary care hospital were contacted to collect information regarding anxiety and depression using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The Pearson's Chi-square was used for univariate analysis of categorical variables. The Mann–Whitney test was used to check the significance between group medians. Results: 21.3% of the survivors (n = 32) reported postdischarge COVID-19 anxiety. Mild, moderate, and moderately severe anxiety was reported by 17.3%, 3.3%, and 0.7% of the patients, respectively, on using the GAD-7 questionnaire. PHQ-9 revealed that 29.3% (n = 44) had depression. Minimal, mild, moderate, and moderately severe depression was reported by 19.3%, 24.0%, 2.0%, and 3.3% of the respondents, respectively. None of the survivors had severe anxiety or depression. In both the questionnaires, variation in median scores was statistically significant with age, whereas for GAD-7 scores, the difference in median scores was statistically significant only for gender. On analysis, age above 40 years was a statistically significant determinant for both anxiety (P = 0.041) and depression (P = 0.018) while male gender showed a statistically significant association in case of anxiety (P = 0.028). The correlation between age and respective scores and GAD-7 scores and PHQ-9 scores was also found to be significant (P < 0.001). Conclusion: These preliminary screening results provide convincing evidence of anxiety and depression among COVID-19 survivors, thus reiterating the need of timely detection and management of mental health issues through formulation of strategies to tackle the concurrent psychological comorbidities amid the ongoing pandemic. Trauma anesthesia care can be among the most challenging situations anesthesia providers may encounter. The challenges encountered are helped by providing anesthesia providers on forward-deployed surgical teams with the best equipment available that meets the limitations of light weight, easily movable, and not reliant on electrical supply. This study assesses three questions derived out of the recent formation and equipping of the U.S. Army's Forward Resuscitative and Surgical Detachment. The highly advanced field transport ventilator, the Hamilton-T1 is being used by the detachments' anesthetists with the Universal Portable Anesthesia, Complete (UPAC) draw-over vaporizer. However, no literature supports best use practices regarding use in a push- or pull-through configuration, adding supplemental oxygen, and the impact on the ventilator from contamination with inhaled anesthetics. Utilizing a human patient simulator, these questions were examined in a quasiexperimental and descriptive manner, using the Hamilton-T1 and UPAC vaporizer in multiple configurations. The findings support the efficacy of both push- and pull-through configurations, offer options for the most efficacious use of oxygen, and appear to show no adverse effects from anesthetic vapor entering the ventilator's compression mechanism. Purpose: To examine the impact of in situ simulation (ISS) with scripting on nursing staff's knowledge and confidence to initiate rapid response teams (RRTs) immediately after identifying patient condition deterioration. Background/Significance: Failure to rescue (FTR) related to delays in activation of RRT is on the rise, leading to poor patient outcomes. Lack of confidence, knowledge, and empowerment are associated with delayed activation of RRTs. As such, the nursing staff's confidence is integral in activating RRTs and FTR prevention. In situ simulation may help nurses increase their confidence, thus empowering timely RRT initiation. Methods: This quantitative pretest-posttest study used a convenience sample of nurses and nursing assistants. First, participants completed the Rapid Response Team Survey (RRTS) pretest. Then, they participated in the ISS scenario. Lastly, they completed debriefing and the RRTS posttest. Results: Pearson's correlation results showed no significant relationships between the variables. Dependent t-test results showed statistically significant increases between the pretest and posttest means (Part l, t = -5.51, p < .001, MD = 1.32; Part 2, t = -1.04, p < .01, MD = 3.1). These results suggest that ISS with scripting increased participants' knowledge and confidence in early activation of RRTs. Additionally, staff reported feeling more confident and empowered regarding future RRT decision-making and communication with other healthcare colleagues. Discussion: Early activation of RRTs prevents FTR. The results of this study suggest ISS with scripting increases staff's knowledge, confidence, and empowerment to activate RRTs. A simulation study was conducted to investigate the heuristics of the SIBTEST procedure and how it compares with ETS classification guidelines used with the Mantel–Haenszel procedure. Prior heuristics have been used for nearly 25 years, but they are based on a simulation study that was restricted due to computer limitations and that modeled item parameters from estimates of ACT and ASVAB tests from 1987 and 1984, respectively. Further, suggested heuristics for data fitting a two-parameter logistic model (2PL) have essentially went unused since their original presentation. This simulation study incorporates a wide range of data conditions to recommend heuristics for both 2PL and three-parameter logistic (3PL) data that correspond with ETS's Mantel–Haenszel heuristics. Levels of agreement between the new SIBTEST heuristics and Mantel–Haenszel heuristics were similar for 2PL data and higher than prior SIBTEST heuristics for 3PL data. The new recommendations provide higher true-positive rates for 2PL data. Conversely, they displayed decreased true-positive rates for 3PL data. False-positive rates, overall, remained below the level of significance for the new heuristics. Unequal group sizes resulted in slightly larger false-positive rates than balanced designs for both prior and new SIBTEST heuristics, with rates less than alpha levels for equal ability distributions and unbalanced designs versus false-positive rates slightly higher than alpha with unequal ability distributions and unbalanced designs. Purpose: To investigate the relationship between static and dynamic postural stability and functional disability associated with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Methods: A total of 80 patients (age 44.64 ± 1.27 years) were recruited in this cross sectional study using convenience sampling. The One Leg Stand Test (OLST) was used to assess static balance with eyes open and eyes closed; Y Balance Test- Lower Quarter (YBT-LQ) was used to assess dynamic balance in the anterior, posterolateral and posteromedial directions; and functional disability was assessed using modified Oswestry Disability Index (mODI). Karl Pearson correlation coefficient was used to estimate the relationship between the variables. Results and Conclusion: mODI was negatively correlated to OLST with eyes closed (r= -0.721); YBTLQ composite score (r= -0.865); and reach distances in the posterolateral (r= -0.815) and posteromedial (r= -0.832) directions suggesting that control of postural stability was reduced with an increase in disability in patients with CLBP. The number of women of advanced maternal age becoming pregnant is more likely to increase in the future, and this is risky because of various complications in the mother and baby. Reported here are partial findings from a larger descriptive study. These findings are perceptions of pregnancy risk among women of advanced maternal age and related obstetric factors of planned pregnancy, parity, gestational age and pregnancy complications. Convenience sampling took place with 190 women, 35 years or over, who were attending antenatal care in three tertiary hospitals in eastern Thailand. Data were collected from January-June 2018. The research instruments were a demographic and obstetric information form and the Thai version of the Perception of Pregnancy Risk Questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics including the Pearson and Point biserial correlation coefficient. Results revealed that participants had mean scores of perception of pregnancy risk of 32.90, which was at a low level. Obstetric factors related to risk perception were parity, gestational age and pregnancy complications. However, planned pregnancy had no significant correlation with risk perception. The findings suggest that participants' perceptions of risk could be individual, based on parity, gestational age and pregnancy complications. Nurses and midwives need to assess women's perceptions about the risk of pregnancy and instigate frequent discussions about this to promote health during prenatal visits. Further studies need to determine how perception of risk influences healthcare professionals' communication with women of advanced age and to develop effective risk communication programs to ensure better pregnancy outcomes. Background: Meniscal injuries are among the most common orthopaedic injuries, with a significant volume of published literature. Purpose: To perform a comprehensive bibliometric analysis that appropriately evaluates the 50 most cited articles in meniscal research. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: We performed a keyword search of the ISIWeb of Knowledge database and then pared the results down to the 50 most cited articles using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data extracted included title, first author, citation count, year of publication, topic, journal, article type, country of origin, and level of evidence. Correlation coefficients were calculated between publication date and citation density and between publication date and raw citation count. Results: The 50 most cited articles were published from 1975 to 2013. The mean number of citations was 258.24 (range, 163-926; median, 225). The majority of articles were published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine (19%), the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (12%), and Arthritis & Rheumatology (14%). Most articles focused on either the anatomy and biomechanics of meniscal injury or on prevention and physical rehabilitation (12 papers each). Conclusion: The most popular fields of meniscal research involved anatomy/biomechanics and prevention/rehabilitation, and both are areas that will likely increase the probability of an article's being highly cited in the future. This study provided a quality selection of the most cited articles on meniscal injury and may provide a foundation for both beginner and senior clinician readers for further discussion and research. Background: Youth baseball players who experience elbow pain during the season frequently exhibit radiographic elbow abnormalities. However, it is unknown whether asymptomatic elbow abnormalities are risk factors for in-season elbow injuries. Purpose: To determine whether the preseason presence of asymptomatic medial epicondyle apophysitis is a risk factor for inseason elbow injuries in youth baseball players. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. Methods: Youth baseball players (N ¼ 210; age range, 7-12 years) with no pain or history of injury in their throwing arms underwent preseason evaluations that included shoulder and elbow range of motion measurements, shoulder muscle strength testing, and ultrasound elbow scans with a multifrequency 13-MHz linear array transducer. Over 1 year of play, the players and their parents maintained daily elbow pain diaries. Elbow injuries were defined as medial elbow symptoms that prevented ball throwing for 8 days. Results: The preseason ultrasound evaluation revealed medial epicondyle apophysitis in 59 players. In the year following, elbow injuries occurred in 17 (28.8%) players with preseason medial epicondyle apophysitis and 18 (11.9%) players without apophysitis. Independent predictors of elbow injuries were preseason medial epicondyle apophysitis (odds ratio [OR], 2.488; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.152-5.376; P ¼ .02) and deficits of abduction (ABD) and external rotation of the dominant shoulder (OR, 0.963; 95% CI, 0.936-0.992; P ¼ .012). Conclusion: Asymptomatic medial epicondyle apophysitis and ABD and external rotation deficits in the dominant shoulder were risk factors for elbow injuries in 7- to 12-year-old youth baseball players. AIM The aim of the study was to examine organizational commitment by exploring experiences of faculty in Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) programs. BACKGROUND ABSN faculty report that the curriculum is intense and fast-paced. METHOD A cross-sectional survey design was used to examine faculty organizational commitment. A 53-item selfreported survey with closed questions measured organizational commitment, global job satisfaction, and work conditions. ABSN programs were recruited using cluster random sampling from a five-region list of programs; 62 programs were recruited with total faculty participation of 104. RESULTS ABSN faculty were found to be affectively and normatively committed to their organizations. Significant predictor variables of work environment conditions were stress and experiences of shortcomings, professional development, managerial support, and global job satisfaction. CONCLUSIONAs ABSN programs continue to flourish, it is important to identify strategies for faculty success within the fast-paced curricula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traditional nonweight-bearing (NWB) hip-strength assessments may not directly translate to functional strength during weight-bearing (WB) activity. How NWB assessments of hip muscle strength compare with WB assessments in various positions is currently unknown. To determine the magnitude of the differences and correlations between NWB hip strength and WB functional strength during the squatting and lunge (LNG) positions in female athletes. Crossover design. Laboratory. Female athletes (N = 51, age = 16.2 ± 3.5 years, height = 161.5 ± 8.3 cm, mass = 58.3 ± 11.6 kg). Isometric resistance (N/kg) was determined for the dominant and nondominant limbs via WB assessments (squat-bilateral [legs tested simultaneously], squat-unilateral, and lunge positions) and NWB assessments (hip external rotation [HER], hip extension [HEXT], and hip abduction [HAB]). To compare differences between positions (P ≤.05), we used effect sizes (d) and matched-pairs t tests, and we calculated Pearson r and R2 values. During the squat-bilateral on the dominant limb, females produced the most hip torque (6.13 ± 1.12 N/kg). The magnitudes of differences were very large compared with HER (3.96 ± 0.83, d = 2.2), HEXT (3.22 ± 0.69, d = 3.2), and HAB (3.80 ± 1.01, d = 2.2; all P values ≤.01), and positions were moderately correlated (r = 0.347–0.419, R2 = 0.12–0.18). The lunge position produced the least amount of torque in the dominant limb (2.44 ± 0.48 N/kg) compared with HER (d = −2.3), HEXT (d = −1.3), and HAB (d = −1.7; all P values ≤.001), and correlations were small to moderate (r = 0.236–0.310, R2 = 0.06–0.10). Strength in WB positions was different than strength evaluated using traditional NWB assessments in female athletes. Appropriate sample size calculation and power analysis have become major issues in research and publication processes. However, the complexity and difficulty of calculating sample size and power require broad statistical knowledge, there is a shortage of personnel with programming skills, and commercial programs are often too expensive to use in practice. The review article aimed to explain the basic concepts of sample size calculation and power analysis; the process of sample estimation; and how to calculate sample size using G*Power software (latest ver. 3.1.9.7; Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf, Germany) with 5 statistical examples. The null and alternative hypothesis, effect size, power, alpha, type I error, and type II error should be described when calculating the sample size or power. G*Power is recommended for sample size and power calculations for various statistical methods (F, t, χ2, Z, and exact tests), because it is easy to use and free. The process of sample estimation consists of establishing research goals and hypotheses, choosing appropriate statistical tests, choosing one of 5 possible power analysis methods, inputting the required variables for analysis, and selecting the "calculate" button. The G*Power software supports sample size and power calculation for various statistical methods (F, t, χ2, z, and exact tests). Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, nursing students have had a key role in supporting the healthcare sector. They can join healthcare professionals in clinical practice or provide information to increase citizens' levels of knowledge and their compliance with the restriction measures. The study aimed to develop and validate a tool to measure knowledge of and attitudes toward COVID-19 among nursing students in Greece. Methods: A questionnaire was developed through theoretical research and expert consultation. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 348 undergraduate nursing students of the Department of Nursing, Hellenic Mediterranean University, recruited by convenient sampling. Validity and reliability were analyzed. Results: The Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin measure was 0.84, indicating that the sample size was adequate for factor analysis. In addition, the p-value for Bartlett's test of sphericity was <0.001, denoting that the correlation matrix was suitable for factor analysis. The construct validity of the questionnaire was determined through exploratory factor analysis (EFA), which revealed that 16 items lead to four factors: knowledge, attitude toward restriction measures, compliance with them, and volunteering. One of the key findings of this study was that participants preferred to receive information from valid sources rather than social media during the crucial period of the "infodemic". Conclusions: The questionnaire was shown to have satisfying psychometric properties and, therefore, can be used as a tool in future research in the area of nursing students' knowledge, attitudes, compliance, and volunteering during the COVID-19 pandemic. Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating autoimmune disorder. Several factors have been shown to associate with MS clinical severity. The influence of different lifestyle factors on MS clinical severity as assessed by the Multiple Sclerosis Severity Score (MSSS) was investigated. Methods: A questionnaire was administered to 128 Kuwaiti MS patients to assess the association of smoking, nutritional supplement use, food allergy, physical activity (PA), and educational level with MSSS. A multiple linear regression model was used to test for associations. Regression model results were adjusted for sex, history of blood transfusion, age at MS onset, and marital status. Results: Smoking status, passive smoking, and food allergy are not associated with MSSS. Patients with MS with a college education and graduate/professional degrees score, on average, 2.56 lower on the MSSS compared with those with less than a high school education (β = --2.22, P = .045; and β = --2.90, P = .048, respectively). Patients who perform PA score, on average, 2.32 lower on the MSSS compared with those with no PA (moderate exercise, P = .003; rigorous exercise, P = .001), and PA correlated significantly with MSSS outcomes (r² = 0.452, P < .001). Conclusions: Educational level and PA are significantly associated with reduced MSSS, and both contribute to a less severe MS clinical course. This study compared the reliability and validity of student scores from paper–pencil and e-based assessments using the "maze" and "silent reading fluency" (SRF) tasks. Forty students who were deaf and hard of hearing and reading between the second and fifth grade reading levels and their teachers (n  = 21) participated. For maze, alternate form reliability coefficients obtained from correct scores and correct scores adjusted for guessing ranged from r  = .61 to.84 (p s  <  .01); criterion-related validity coefficients ranged from r  = .33 to.67 (most p s < .01). For SRF, reliability coefficients obtained from correct scores ranged from r  = .50 to.75 (p s  <  .01); validity ranged from r  = .25 to.72. Differences between student performance on paper–pencil and e-based conditions were generally non-significant for maze; significant differences between conditions for SRF favored the paper–pencil condition. Background: Nurses play a key role in providing patient safety. It is known that patient safety requires the improvement of patient safety culture, which can be a difficult process. One of the current challenges of hospitals is to explore the ways to improve patient safety culture. Organizational citizenship behaviors are one of the factors, which can develop organizational culture including safety culture; however, its role is not well established. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a stratified random sample of 214 nurses was selected from a largest teaching hospital in west of Iran. The institutional research board approved the study protocol. Data were collected using three self-report questionnaires: demographic information; hospital survey on patient safety culture (HSPSC); and organizational citizenship behaviors questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Spearman's correlation coefficient test in SPSS (α < 0.05). Results: Organizational citizenship behaviors were found to be at an intermediate level (56.84 ± 16.22). However, some of its dimensions, including sportsmanship, civic virtue, and courtesy, were at weak levels (< 50%). The mean percentage of positive responses to the patient safety culture was 49.00 ± 14.01. The patient safety culture had significant positive correlations with organizational citizenship behaviors (r = 0.349, P = 0.001) and dimensions of altruism (r = 0.255, P = 0.001), civic virtue (r = 0.434, P = 0.001), and courtesy (r = 0.214, P = 0.001). Conclusion: Our findings proposed the hypothesis that OCB has a statistical significant impact on PSC. Low levels of civic virtue, sportsmanship and courtesy behaviors may be indicative low nurses' interest in participating in organizational affairs and nurses' low attention to measures that prevent harm to their organization. It is recommended that nursing managers focus more on these dimensions, identifying influintioal factors and taking appropriate management measures to promote these behaviors. If our findings are confirmed in future studies, nursing managers can consider the development of organizational citizenship behaviors as one of the managerial approaches for promoting a patient safety culture. To assess the vitamin D status in healthy 6‐month‐old infants, as well as vitamin D supplementation and feeding patterns in Guangzhou, China, serum 25‐hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentrations of 202 infants were measured at birth (cord blood) and at 6 months of age in Guangzhou, China. Questionnaires acquiring demographic characteristics, maternal and infantile vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy and first 6 months after birth, and feeding patterns during the first 6 months were completed by participating mothers. Physical examinations and blood sampling were carried out among infants at 6 months of age. The majority of infants (93.6%) were supplemented with vitamin D during the first 6 months of life on a voluntary basis. The M ± SD of cord serum 25OHD concentration was 46.2 ± 16.4 nmol/L, whereas the M ± SD of 25OHD concentration at 6 months was 82.9 ± 24.9 nmol/L. Serum 25OHD concentrations <30 nmol/L were seen in 34 (16.8%) infants at birth but only one (0.5%) at 6 months. Only 11 (5.4%) infants had concentrations >75 nmol/L at birth, whereas the majority of infants (n = 131, 64.9%) had concentrations >75 nmol/L at 6 months. The main predictors of 25OHD levels at 6 months included season, vitamin D supplementation, parental education level, and feeding patterns. To conclude, serum 25OHD concentrations were low at birth in a southern Chinese population, and infantile supplementation is an effective way to improve 25OHD status. This study evaluates the effects of a short-term Cardio Tai Chi program on the cardiorespiratory fitness and hemodynamic parameters in sedentary adults. Thirty-one sedentary participants (age: 58 ± 9 years, body mass: 63 ± 12 kg) were subjected to an exercise program during 10 sessions over a 10-day period within 2 weeks. The Cardio Tai Chi program consisted in a series of three to five intervals lasting 90 s each at ∼70% maximal heart rate separated by 2-min of low-intensity recovery. Primary outcome measures were cardiorespiratory fitness (peak oxygen uptake, V ˙ O 2 p e a k ) assessed by the Rockport walking test and resting hemodynamic parameters (systolic, diastolic, mean, and pulse pressures). We observed a significant difference of means on post-pre V ˙ O 2 p e a k [4.5 ml/kg/min, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.1 to 5.8, p = 0.004], systolic blood pressure (-5.5 mmHg, 95% CI:-7.3 to -3.8, p = 0.010) and pulse pressure (-3.7 mmHg, 95% CI: -5.2 to -2.3, p = 0.028). No significant differences were observed for diastolic pressure (−1.8 mmHg, 95% CI: -2.6 to -1.0, p = 0.226), mean blood pressure (2.5 mmHg, 95% CI: 1.4 to 3.6, p = 0.302), or resting heart rate (-0.9 beat/min, 95% CI: -2.0 to 0.1, p = 0.631). BACKGROUND: Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor that affects fetal growth in experimental studies. Bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS), which have been substituted for BPA in some consumer products, have also shown endocrine-disrupting effects in experimental models. However, the effects of BPF and BPS on fetal growth in humans are unknown OBJECTIVES: Our goal was to investigate trimester-specific associations of urinary concentrations of BPA, BPF, and BPS with size at birth METHODS: The present study included 845 pregnant women from Wuhan, China (2013–2015), who provided one urine sample in each of the first, second, and third trimesters. Linear regressions with generalized estimating equations were applied to estimate trimester-specific associations of urinary bisphenol concentrations with birth weight, birth length, and ponderal index. Linear mixed-effects models were used to identify potential critical windows of susceptibility to bisphenols by comparing the exposure patterns of newborns in the 10th percentile of each birth anthropometric measurement to that of those in the 90th percentile. RESULTS: Medians (25th–75th percentiles) of urinary concentrations of BPA, BPF, and BPS were 1.40 (0.19–3.85), 0.65 (0.34–1.39), and 0.38 (0.13– 1.11) ng/mL, respectively. Urinary BPA concentrations in different trimesters were inversely, but not significantly, associated with birth weight and ponderal index. Urinary concentrations of BPF and BPS during some trimesters were associated with significantly lower birth weight, birth length, or ponderal index, with significant trend p-values (p,trend < 0.05) across quartiles of BPF and BPS concentrations. The observed associations were unchanged after additionally adjusting for other bisphenols. In addition, newborns in the 10th percentile of each birth anthropometry measure had higher BPF and BPS exposures during pregnancy than newborns in the 90th percentile of each outcome. The purpose of the present study was to examine alcohol use behaviors among a national sample of occupational therapy students. Survey instruments, including the AUDIT and a checklist of risky and unprofessional behaviors related to alcohol abuse, were mailed to 1,000 occupational therapy students randomly selected from membership in the American Occupational Therapy Association. Surveys were returned by 309 student members; however, 24 indicated they were not currently occupational therapy students. Of the 285 participants, 97% reported drinking alcohol at some point over the previous year, with 1 in 5 drinking two or more times a week, often consuming four or more drinks per occasion. Predominant risky and unprofessional behaviors included binge drinking, saying something very inappropriate, combining alcohol and energy drinks, and attending class with a hangover. In general, these students tended to drink alcohol in a socially responsible and acceptable manner. Nevertheless, based on AUDIT guidelines, almost two-thirds of the students did consume alcohol on some singular or more frequent occurrence in the previous year at harmful or hazardous levels. As a consequence, the need to address the topic of alcohol abuse at both the university and the professional levels is warranted, along with the provision of counseling and occupationbased treatment services for those experiencing physiological and psychological problems stemming from alcohol abuse and/or addiction. Previous work showing that revised parallel analysis can be effective with dichotomous items has used a two-parameter model and normally distributed abilities. In this study, both two- and three-parameter models were used with normally distributed and skewed ability distributions. Relatively minor skew and kurtosis in the underlying ability distribution had almost no effect on Type I error for unidimensional data and reduced power for two-dimensional data slightly with smaller sample sizes of 400. Using a two-parameter model on three-parameter data produced dramatically increased rejection rates for the unidimensional data. Using the correct three-parameter model reduced the unidimensional rejection rates but yielded lower power than the two-parameter data in some conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Ongoing development and expansion of trauma centers in the United States necessitates empirical analysis of the effect of investment in such resources on population-level health outcomes. Methods Multiple linear regressions were performed to predict state-level trauma-related mortality among adults and the elderly across 50 US states in 2010. The number of trauma centers per capita in each state and the percentage of each state's population living within 45-min of a trauma center served as the key independent variables and injury-related mortality served as the dependent variable. All analyses were stratified by age (adult versus elderly; elderly ≥ 65 years old) and were performed in SPSS. Results The proportion of a population with geographic proximity to a trauma center demonstrates a consistent inverse linear relationship to injury-related mortality. The relationship reliably retains its significance in models including demographic covariates. Interestingly, access to Levels I and II trauma centers demonstrates a stronger correlation with mortality than was observed with Level III centers. Conclusion Trauma center access is associated with reduced trauma-related mortality among both adults and the elderly as measured by state reported mortality rates. Ongoing efforts to designate and verify new trauma centers, particularly in poorly-served 'trauma deserts', could lead to lower mortality for large populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Emotional intelligence (EI) includes skills such as recognizing, understanding, and managing emotions. This pilot study investigated the utility of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test Version 2.0 as a screening instrument in student registered nurse anesthetists by determining if EI predicted clinical performance. Scores from 11 participants enrolled in a single nurse anesthesia program were correlated with formative clinical evaluations. Relationships between EI and clinical performance were examined. Participants consistently met clinical performance objectives but were unable to use emotion to solve problems or to recognize others' emotions, suggesting that EI abilities could impact future student registered nurse anesthetist clinical performance. Background. People with low back pain (LBP) may display an altered lumbar movement pattern of early lumbar motion compared to people with healthy backs. Modifying this movement pattern during a clinical test decreases pain. It is unknown whether similar effects would be seen during a functional activity. Objective. The objective of this study was to examine the lumbar movement patterns before and after motor skill training, effects on pain, and characteristics that influenced the ability to modify movement patterns. Design. The design consisted of a repeated-measures study examining early-phase lumbar excursion in people with LBP during a functional activity test. Methods. Twenty-six people with chronic LBP received motor skill training, and 16 people with healthy backs were recruited as a reference standard. Twenty minutes of motor skill training to decrease early-phase lumbar excursion during the performance of a functional activity were used as a treatment intervention. Early-phase lumbar excursion was measured before and after training. Participants verbally reported increased pain, decreased pain, or no change in pain during performance of the functional activity test movement in relation to their baseline pain. The characteristics of people with LBP that influenced the ability to decrease early-phase lumbar excursion were examined. Results. People with LBP displayed greater early-phase lumbar excursion before training than people with healthy backs (LBP: mean = 11.2°, 95% CI = 9.3°-13.1°; healthy backs: mean = 7.1°, 95% CI = 5.8°--8.4°). Following training, the LBP group showed a decrease in the amount of early-phase lumbar excursion (mean change = 4.1°, 95% CI = 2.4°-5.8°); 91% of people with LBP reported that their pain decreased from baseline following training. The longer the duration of LBP (β = - 0.22) and the more early-phase lumbar excursion before training (β = - 0.82), the greater the change in early-phase lumbar excursion following training. Limitations. The long-term implications of modifying the movement pattern and whether the decrease in pain attained was clinically significant are unknown. Conclusions. AIM The aim of this research was to evaluate the impact of a transgender simulation on nursing students’ affirmative practice when caring for a transgender person. BACKGROUND There is a paucity of research that assesses the attitudes of nursing students toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons and a deficit in nursing curricula regarding LGBT content. METHOD A nonexperimental, pretest-posttest design was used to evaluate nursing students’ affirmative practice when caring for a transgender patient using the Gay Affirmative Practice Scale. RESULTS A Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed a statistical significance in Gay Affirmative Practice scores after the simulation with a small effect size. These results suggest that the transgender simulation supported nursing students’ attitudes and affirmative practice when providing nursing care to a transgender person. When testing a statistical mediation model, it is assumed that factorial measurement invariance holds for the mediating construct across levels of the independent variable X. The consequences of failing to address the violations of measurement invariance in mediation models are largely unknown. The purpose of the present study was to systematically examine the impact of mediator noninvariance on the Type I error rates, statistical power, and relative bias in parameter estimates of the mediated effect in the single mediator model. The results of a large simulation study indicated that, in general, the mediated effect was robust to violations of invariance in loadings. In contrast, most conditions with violations of intercept invariance exhibited severely positively biased mediated effects, Type I error rates above acceptable levels, and statistical power larger than in the invariant conditions. Background: Bed rest studies document that a lower dietary acid load is associated with lower bone resorption. Objective: We tested the effect of dietary acid load on bone metabolism during spaceflight. Design: Controlled 4-d diets with a high or low animal protein-to-potassium (APro:K) ratio (High and Low diets, respectively) were given to 17 astronauts before and during spaceflight. Each astronaut had 1 High and 1 Low diet session before flight and 2 High and 2 Low sessions during flight, in addition to a 4-d session around flight day 30 (FD30), when crew members were to consume their typical in-flight intake. At the end of each session, blood and urine samples were collected. Calcium, total protein, energy, and sodium were maintained in each crew member's preflight and in-flight controlled diets. Results: Relative to preflight values, N-telopeptide (NTX) and urinary calcium were higher during flight, and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BSAP) was higher toward the end of flight. The High and Low diets did not affect NTX, BSAP, or urinary calcium. Dietary sulfur and age were significantly associated with changes in NTX. Dietary sodium and flight day were significantly associated with urinary calcium during flight. The net endogenous acid production (NEAP) estimated from the typical dietary intake at FD30 was associated with loss of bone mineral content in the lumbar spine after the mission. The results were compared with data from a 70-d bed rest study, in which control (but not exercising) subjects' APro:K was associated with higher NTX during bed rest. Conclusions: Long-term lowering of NEAP by increasing vegetable and fruit intake may protect against changes in loss of bone mineral content during spaceflight when adequate calcium is consumed, particularly if resistive exercise is not being performed. Background: Individuals with impaired fat taste (FT) sensitivity have reduced satiety responses after consuming fatty foods, leading to increased dietary fat intake. Habitual consumption of dietary fat may modulate sensitivity to FT, with high consumption decreasing sensitivity [increasing fatty acid taste threshold (FATT)] and low consumption increasing sensitivity (decreasing FATT). However, some individuals may be less susceptible to diet-mediated changes in FATT due to variations in gene expression. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of an 8-wk low-fat or high-fat diet on FATT while maintaining baseline weight (<2.0 kg variation) to assess heritability and to explore the effect of genetics on diet-mediated changes in FATT. Design: A co-twin randomized controlled trial including 44 pairs (mean ± SD age: 43.7 ± 15.4 y; 34 monozygotic, 10 dizygotic; 33 women, 10 men, 1 gender-discordant) was conducted. Twins within a pair were randomly allocated to an 8-wk low-fat (<20% of energy from fat) or high-fat (>35% of energy from fat) diet. FATT was assessed by a 3-alternate forced choice methodology and transformed to an ordinal scale (FT rank) at baseline and at 4 and 8 wk. Linear mixed models were fit to assess diet effect on FT rank and diet effect modification due to zygosity. A variance components model was fit to calculate baseline heritability. Results: There was a significant time x diet interaction for FT rank after the 8-wk trial (P < 0.001), with the same conclusions for the subset of participants maintaining baseline weight (low-fat; n = 32; high-fat: n = 35). There was no evidence of zygosity effect modification (interaction of time x diet x zygosity: P = 0.892). Heritability of baseline FT rank was 8%. Conclusions: There appears to be little to no genetic contribution on heritability of FATT or diet-mediated changes to FATT. Background: Despite changes in the academic arena in Saudi Arabia including the national accreditation that mandates research productivity by university faculty members, no study has investigated nursing faculty members' attitudes towards research and their perceived barriers. Aims: To investigate nursing academicians' attitudes towards, barriers of, and intention to conduct research in a Saudi public university, and to compare Saudi and non-Saudi nursing academicians in terms of study variables. Methods: This study used a quantitative correlational research design utilizing a self-reported questionnaire to collect data from 62 faculty members in a nursing college at a large governmental university in the eastern region of Saudi Arabia. Results: Participants were found to have moderate negative attitudes 1.77/5 (SD=0.70), higher organizational (M=2. 89, SD=1.05) than individual (M=2.32, SD=0.94), and relatively high intention to conduct research (M=3.71, SD=0.88). In general, Non-Saudi participants had more negative attitudes (t= -2.90, df=59.29, p=.005), but barriers were not significantly different. Participants with master degree reported more individual barriers (F=7.06, df=61, p=.002) than participants with bachelor degree, and more organizational barriers (F=10.73, df=61, p=.000) than their counterparts. Attitudes significantly correlated with both individual (r=.399, p=.001) and organizational barriers (r=.436, p=.000). Interestingly, neither participant's attitudes nor their perceived barriers correlated with their intention to conduct research. Discussion: Establishing structured research program that contains research training, research mentorship, time allocated for research, and allocating research fund is highly recommended in Saudi nursing faculties to overcome barriers of conducting research. Fire risk assessment remains separate from the universal protocol for surgical time-outs. A descriptive crosssectional design was used to examine the perceived knowledge and attitudes of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) and student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) on fire risk assessment during surgical time-outs. Modified knowledge and attitudes questionnaires were sent to approximately 1,600 active members of the Illinois Association of Nurse Anesthetists through an online survey. Data were analyzed using descriptive, t-test, analysis of variance, and point biserial correlation statistics. Most of the 140 study participants overwhelmingly reported positive attitudes toward fire risk assessment, but they had self-reported information needs in 11 areas of the operating room fire risk assessment questionnaire. Age, gender, years in practice, and highest education had no statistically significant correlation with knowledge and attitudes regarding fire risk assessment. The perceived knowledge deficits on fire risk assessment may hinder the CRNAs and SRNAs from adopting a tool such as a fire risk assessment checklist that is ready for implementation at their current place of employment. Background. Diastasis recti abdominis (DrA) is associated with negative body image, musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, and perhaps urogynecological complaints. The severity of DrA has traditionally been determined by measuring the interrectus distance (IRD); however, the relationship between IRD and symptoms in women with DrA is unclear. Objective. The objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between IRD and symptom severity in women with DrA in the early postpartum period. Design. This study used a cross-sectional design. Methods. Thirty-two women with DrA were assessed at 3 weeks postpartum. The IRD was measured using ultrasound imaging. Symptom severity was assessed using the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire subscales (body image), visual analog scales (abdominal, low back, and pelvic pain intensity), the Modified Oswestry Index (disability due to low back pain), and the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory and Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire (urogynecological dysfunction). Spearman correlation coefficients (p) between IRD and each outcome were calculated and tested using 1-tailed significance (adjusted α = .009). Results. The group median IRD was 2.97 cm (interquartile range = 1.65 cm), with the largest IRD in the sample being 7.97 cm. The IRD was significantly correlated with worst abdominal pain in the last 24 hours (p = 0.45, P = .005) and with overall body image (p = -0.44, P = .006) but not with the other outcomes. Limitations. Women in the sample were primiparous, were in the early (3 weeks) postpartum period, had relatively low body mass indexes (mean = 25.0 kg/m²) considering that they had recently given birth, were all breast-feeding, and had a narrow age range (27-35 years old). These factors limited the generalizability of our results to all women with DrA. Conclusions. Maternal capabilities-qualities of mothers that enable them to leverage skills and resources into child health-hold potential influence over mother's adoption of child caring practices, including infant and young child feeding. We developed a survey ( n = 195) that assessed the associations of 4 dimensions of maternal capabilities (social support, psychological health, decision making, and empowerment) with mothers' infant and young child feeding practices and children's nutritional status in Uganda. Maternal responses were converted to categorical subscales and an overall index. Scale reliability coefficients were moderate to strong (α range = 0.49 to 0.80). Mothers with higher social support scores were more likely to feed children according to the minimum meal frequency (odds ratio [OR] [95% confidence interval (CI)] = 1.38 [1.10, 1.73]), dietary diversity (OR [95% CI] = 1.56 [1.15, 2.11]), iron rich foods, (OR [95% CI] = 1.47 [1.14, 1.89]), and minimally acceptable diet (OR [95% CI] = 1.55 [1.10, 2.21]) indicators. Empowerment was associated with a greater likelihood of feeding a minimally diverse and acceptable diet. The maternal capabilities index was significantly associated with feeding the minimum number of times per day (OR [95% CI] = 1.29 [1.03, 1.63]), dietary diversity (OR [95% CI] = 1.44 [1.06, 1.94]), and minimally acceptable diet (OR [95% CI] = 1.43 [1.01, 2.01]). Mothers with higher psychological satisfaction were more likely to have a stunted child (OR [95% CI] = 1.31 [1.06, 1.63]). No other associations between the capabilities scales and child growth were significant. Strengthening social support for mothers and expanding overall maternal capabilities hold potential for addressing important underlying determinants of child feeding in the Ugandan context. Gestational vitamin D insufficiency is related with increased risks of various diseases and poor health outcomes later in life. Telomere length at birth or early in life is known to be a predictor of individual health. Both vitamin D and telomere length are related with various health conditions, and vitamin D concentrations are associated with leukocyte telomere lengths in women. We investigated the association between maternal vitamin D concentrations and newborn leukocyte telomere lengths. This cross-sectional study included 106 healthy pregnant women without adverse obstetric outcomes and their offspring. We examined the maternal age, weight before pregnancy, health behaviours, and nutritional intakes, along with each newborn's sex and birthweight, and we measured maternal height, telomere length, total white blood cell count, and glycosylated haemoglobin as covariates. Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated to evaluate the relationship between the baseline variables and newborn leukocyte telomere lengths. To confirm that there was an independent association between newborn leukocyte telomere lengths and maternal vitamin D concentrations, we performed a stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. Newborn leukocyte telomere lengths correlated positively with maternal leukocyte telomere lengths ( r = .76, p < .01), maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations ( r = .72, p < .01), maternal energy intakes ( r = .22, p = .03), and newborn body weights ( r = .51, p < .01). In the multivariate model, newborn leukocyte telomere lengths were associated with maternal vitamin D concentrations (β = .33, p < .01). Vitamin B6 is important in fetal development, but little is known of the vitamin B6 status of pregnant women and newborns in North America and potential modifying factors. This prospective study determined maternal and cord plasma concentrations of pyridoxal 5′ phosphate (PLP; an indicator of vitamin B6 status) in a convenience sample of 368 Canadian pregnant women and their newborns. The association of maternal intake of vitamin B6 and fetal genetic variants with cord plasma PLP and homocysteine concentrations was also examined. Dietary and supplemental intakes of vitamin B6 were assessed in early and mid to late pregnancy. PLP concentrations were measured in maternal plasma in early pregnancy and at delivery, and in cord plasma. Six fetal variants of the MTHFR and CβS genes were assessed for their association with cord plasma PLP and homocysteine concentrations. Geometric mean (95% CI) PLP concentrations were 107 (98, 116) nmol/L in early pregnancy and 58 (53, 62) nmol/L at delivery, respectively, and 296 (275, 319) nmol/L in cord blood ( p < .0001). During early pregnancy and at delivery, 3.6% and 5.5% of women had plasma PLP concentrations <20 nmol/L, respectively. Ninety eight percent of the women with supplemental B6 intake of at least the recommended dietary allowance had PLP concentrations >20 nmol/L. Fetal genetic variants were not associated with cord PLP and homocysteine concentrations. Context: Recent employment data from collegiate athletic training settings have demonstrated departure trends among men and women. These trends have been hypothesized to be related to work-life balance. However, work-life balance is only 1 aspect of a myriad of factors. Due to the complex nature of the work-life interface, a multilevel examination is needed to better understand the precipitators of departure. Objective: To quantitatively examine factors that may influence collegiate athletic trainers' (ATs') job satisfaction and career intentions via a multilevel examination of the work-life interface. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Web-based questionnaire. Patients or Other Participants: Athletic trainers employed in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I, II, or III or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics colleges or universities (N =299: 56.5% female, 43.5% male). The average age of participants was 33.6±8.3 years, and their average experience was 10.3±7.6 years. Data Collection and Analysis: Participants responded to an online questionnaire consisting of demographic questions, 9 Likert-scale surveys, and open-ended questions. Job-satisfaction Scores (JSSs) and intention-to-leave scores (ITLSs) served as the dependent variables and factors from individual, organizational, and sociocultural levels were the independent variables. Hierarchical regression analysis was run to determine the predictability of factors. Results: No sex differences in ITLS or JSS were found in our sample. Independent variables explained 68.5% of the variance in JSS and 28.8% of the variance in ITLS. Additions of factor levels increased the percentage of explained variance in both scores. Conclusions: A combination of individual-, organizational-, and sociocultural-level factors was able to best predict JSS and ITLS among collegiate ATs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Increased pitch volume and altered glenohumeral (GH) and hip range of motion (ROM) and strength contribute to injury risk in baseball pitchers. Although these factors affect one another, whether they are related is unknown. Objective: To examine relationships among cumulative and seasonal pitch volume, ROM, and strength of the GH and hip joints in youth baseball pitchers. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Baseball practice facilities. Patients or Other Participants: A total of 28 healthy baseball pitchers (age = 13.9 ± 2.9 years). Main Outcome Measure(s): A demographic and pitching questionnaire was used to quantify pitch volume. Glenohumeral internal-rotation (IR) and external-rotation (ER) ROM and strength of the throwing arm; total arc of motion (IR + ER ROM); and bilateral hip IR, ER, and total arc of motion ROM and strength in IR, ER, and abduction were measured. A goniometer was used to assess ROM; a handheld dynamometer, to assess strength. Frequency analyses and bivariate correlations (age covariate) described data and identified relationships. Results: Correlations between years of competitive play and increased strength in lead-leg hip IR (r =0.52, P = .02) and abduction (r=0.48, P=.04) and stance-leg hip IR (r=0.45, P= .05) were fair to good. The number of months played in the last year had a fair correlation with decreased GH IR strength (r = -0.39, P = .04) and increased stance-leg hip IR strength (r = 0.44, P = .05). Limited pitch time had a fair correlation with increased GH ER ROM (r = 0.40, P = .04) and an excellent correlation with increased lead-leg hip IR ROM (r = 0.79, P < .001). Increased innings pitched per game had a fair to good correlation with decreased GH IR strength (r =-0.41, P = .04) and stance-leg hip ER ROM (r =-0.53, P = .03). More pitches per game had a fair to good correlation with increased GH ER ROM (r=0.44, P=.05) and decreased stance-leg hip ER ROM (r =-0.62, P = .008).
