Background: Effective communication between nurses and cancer patients is essential for patient satisfaction and optimal health outcomes in outpatient oncology settings. This study explored the communication experiences of Iranian cancer patients receiving outpatient treatment. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or follow-up treatment at an outpatient clinic in Urmia, Iran. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data. This study adhered to the standards set forth in the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist. Results: Three main categories emerged from the interviews with Iranian cancer patients: communication dynamics, barriers to communication, and effective communication outcomes. Patients expressed a desire for nurses who actively listen, provide emotional support, and offer thorough education about their disease and treatment options. However, they also identified barriers to effective communication, including negative nurse behaviors (such as lack of empathy), heavy workloads, gender and language discordance, and logistical challenges within the clinic setting. When communication was positive, patients reported increased commitment to their treatment plans, improved coping mechanisms, reduced stress levels, and greater satisfaction with their overall care. Conclusions: This study revealed the multifaceted nature of communication in outpatient oncology settings from the patient's perspective. Findings underscore the need for interventions that enhance nurse communication skills, address workload issues, promote cultural sensitivity, and optimize clinic logistics. This qualitative study explores how communication practice affects Swedish home care nurses' psychosocial work environment. Data consisted of interviews and field observations, analyzed from the perspective of Media Synchronicity Theory and the Job-Demand-Control-Support model. Individual home care nurses were found to manage an interorganizational communication web. The results indicated that this web could have a protective function for the nurses. Synchronous communication was found important to control the work situation. Nevertheless, asynchronous communication was enforced when communicating with other health care organizations. This reduced the level of control for the nurses. However, when possible, the nurses also arranged their communication practice to gain control. Thus, local optimization for one group could result in suboptimization for others. We conclude that communication practice should be designed holistically and promote synchronous communication to foster well-functioning interprofessional teamwork and to create a healthy psychosocial work environment for both home care nurses and their collaborators. Background: The development of clinical guidelines aimed at GPs is a key strategy to improving the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD). In 2019, the first CKD guideline aimed specifically at GPs practicing in Germany was published by the German College of General Practitioners and Family Physicians (DEGAM.) Aims: The aim of this study is to identify the barriers and enablers for the implementation of this guideline. The results of this project, together with quantitative evaluation against quality indicators for CKD in primary care will inform an update to the guideline. Methods: We performed 17 semi-structured interviews with GPs practicing in Berlin and Brandenburg. Transcripts were analysed using qualitative content analysis as described by Mayring. Results: We found that the perception of low clinical priority of CKD compared to other chronic diseases, opportunity cost of using guidelines, as well as poor patient understanding were significant barriers. GPs expressed that improved graphic design or integration of guideline recommendations in clinical decision support systems were enabling factors. Clinical problems concerning CKD were mostly solved by recourse to informal communication with specialists. GPs reported that they rarely consulted CKD guidelines as an aide to clinical decision making. Conclusion: The most significant barrier to use was that guidelines were not used as step-by-step decision aide in consultations with patients. Our analysis suggests that informal contact between primary and secondary care is significant conduit for evidence-based information on CKD in German primary care. Background: Improving the quality of clinical training is synonymous with accomplishing nursing education goals and improving the quality of nursing care. This study aimed to improve the quality of clinical training in Maternal and Neonatal Health (MNH) in nursing students. Methods: This action research was conducted in two cycles from June 2017 to June 2018. The study setting was the School of Nursing and Midwifery of Lorestan University of Medical Sciences in southwest Iran. The participants were nursing students, faculty members, clinical trainers, educational managers, and teaching personnel. In the first cycle, semi-structured interviews were held with stakeholders to identify clinical problems and improvement strategies. Based on the results of these sessions, the changes needed to improve the quality of clinical training were planned and implemented. The weaknesses and strengths of the implemented changes were then identified through group discussions with the stakeholders. In the second cycle, a second plan was carried out to correct the weaknesses of the changes planned in the first cycle, and the modifications were implemented and evaluated. Results: The main three categories extracted included an unsystematic curriculum and inadequate monitoring, inadequate resources and facilities, and the student's lack of motivation. The measures taken for improvement included holding communication workshops, developing and internalizing logbooks, reducing the number of students in clinical training groups, using modern clinical training methods, and changing clinical evaluation methods. Conclusion: Improving communication skills among the students, trainers, and hospital personnel and using modern clinical training methods, such as conceptual maps, triple jumps, and clinical skill centers, are the best strategies for improving clinical training in MNH nursing students. Background: Chronic, non-malignant diseases (CNMD) like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), congestive heart failure (CHF) and dementia in advanced stages are very burdensome for patients. Timely palliative care with strong collaboration between general practitioners (GPs) and specialist palliative home care (SPHC) teams can reduce symptom burden, hospitalization rates, hospitalization costs and overall healthcare costs. The KOPAL-study on strengthening interprofessional collaboration for patients with palliative care needs tested the effect of an intervention comprising of a SPHC nurse assessment and an interprofessional case conference. This qualitative evaluative study explores patients', proxies' and their associates' motivation to participate in the KOPAL-study and views on the (benefits of the) intervention. Methods: We interviewed 13 male and 10 female patients as well as 14 proxies of patients with dementia and six associates of study participants using a semi-structured interview guide. All interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed with deductive-inductive qualitative content analysis. Results: Motivation for participation was driven by curiosity, the aim to please the GP or to support research, respectively to help other patients. Few interviewees pointed out to have expected positive effects for themselves. The nurse visit was evaluated very positively. Positive changes concerning health care or quality of life were reported sparsely. Most study participants did not prepare for the SPHC nurse assessment. They had no expectations concerning potential benefits of such an assessment, the interdisciplinary case conference and an early integration of palliative care. The majority of interviewees reported that they did not talk about the nurse visit and the interprofessional case conference with their GPs. Conclusion: Our results lead to the conclusion that SPHC nurses can serve as an advocate for the patient and thereby support the patients' autonomy. GPs should actively discuss the results of the interdisciplinary case conference with patients and collaboratively decide on further actions. Patient participation in the interdisciplinary case conference could be another way to increase the effects of the intervention by empowering patients to not just passively receive the intervention. Background: Patient safety is a global health issue that affects patients worldwide. Providing safe care in the intensive care units (ICUs) is one of the most crucial tasks for nurses. Numerous factors can impact the capacity of nurses to deliver safe care within ICUs. Consequently, this study was undertaken with the aim of identifying the components of safe nursing care in ICUs. Methods: The current research constitutes a qualitative conventional content analysis study conducted from January 2022 to June 2022. The study participants comprised nurses, intensivists, nurse responsible for patient safety, paramedic, patients, and patients' family member, totaling 21 individuals selected through purposive sampling. Data collection involved individual, in-depth, and semi-structured interviews. Subsequently, data analysis was performed utilizing the approach outlined by Graneheim and Lundman (Nurse Educ Today 24(2):105–12, 2004), leading to the identification of participants' perspectives. Results: Three themes were identified as components of safe nursing care in ICUs. These themes include professional behavior (with categories: Implementation of policies, organizing communication, professional ethics), holistic care (with categories: systematic care, comprehensive care of all systems), and safety-oriented organization (with categories: human resource management and safe environment). Conclusions: The findings of this study underscore the significance of advocating for safe nursing practices in ICUs by emphasizing professional conduct, holistic care, and safety-focused organizational structures. These results align with existing research, suggesting that by introducing tailored interventions and tactics informed by these elements, a safer environment for nursing care can be established for ICUs patients. Background: Delivering emergency care in rural areas can be challenging, but video consultation (VC) offers opportunities to make healthcare more accessible. The communication and relationship between professionals and patients have a significant impact on the patient's experience of safety and inclusion. Understanding the patient perspective is crucial to developing good quality healthcare, but little is known about patient experiences of emergency care via VC in a rural context. The aim of this study was to explore patient experiences of emergency care via VC in northern rural Sweden. Methods: Using a qualitative approach, semi- structured interviews (n = 12) were conducted with individuals aged 18—89 who had received emergency care with a registered nurse (RN) on site and VC with a general practitioner (GP). The interviews were conducted between October 2021 and March 2023 at community hospitals (n = 7) in Västerbotten County, Sweden. Interviews were analysed with content analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in main categories (n = 2), categories (n = 5) and subcategories (n = 20). In the main category, "We were a team of three", patients described a sense of inclusion and ability to contribute. The patients perceived the interaction between the GP and RN to function well despite being geographically dispersed. Patients highly valued the opportunity to speak directly to the GP. In the main category, "VC was a two-sided coin", some experienced the emergency care through VC to be effective and smooth, while some felt that they received a lower quality of care and preferred face-to-face consultation with the GP. The quality of the VC was highly dependent on the RN's ability to function as the hub in the emergency room. Conclusion: Patients in rural areas perceived being included in 'the team' during VC, however they experienced disadvantages with the system on individual basis. The nursing profession plays an important role, and a proper educational background is crucial to support RNs in their role as the hub of the visit. The GP's presence via VC was seen as important, but to fully enable them to fulfil their commitments as medical professionals, VC needs to be further improved with education and support from technical devices. Aim: Individual experiences shape perceptions of illness. Post-Soviet migrants have different expectations of chronic disease treatment than German patients. This study aimed to delve into perceptions of diabetes mellitus, a topic of increasing importance in global migration. Design: Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 26 post-Soviet migrants with diabetes and three Russian-speaking diabetes counselors, mainly recruited through a snowball system. Methods: The research data were analyzed using a hermeneutic approach. The categories of the common-sense self-regulation model and developed subcategories were scrutinized by means of content analysis, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the data. Results: The perception of diabetes mellitus varied depending on the country where the diagnosis was made. This included the individual recording of symptoms, the expected time course, and the allocation of different competencies. Opportunities for access to the local healthcare system in the former Soviet Union influenced these expectations. Conclusion: The study’s findings underscore the importance of healthcare access in the country of origin and the patient’s knowledge of diabetes mellitus in shaping their perception and treatment. Rates of burnout and compassion fatigue in healthcare professionals have remained high since the beginning of the pandemic with adverse implications for patient care. Tell Me More® (TMM) is a tool licensed by the Gold Foundation, which was created with the purpose of helping patients, caregivers, and hospital staff to connect with each other on a humanistic level. Research has shown the benefits of the TMM with students and anecdotally with patients. This mixed-method study, which consisted of surveys and semistructured interviews with healthcare professionals (n = 72), sought out to understand the impact of implementation of TMM on a hospital floor. Surveys were distributed before and after the occurrence of TMM with interviews only occurring afterward. Three out of 8 survey items were found to be significant. Content analysis from interviews generated 4 themes from participants which included "Connectedness to Patient," "Separation of Person and Illness," "Communication with Patient's Support Network," and "Connectedness with Non-Verbal Patients." TMM is a useful tool for strengthening provider–patient relationships in hospital settings and may therefore lessen compassion fatigue and burnout. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Hybrid working arrangements that combine remote and office work are on the rise. Although hybrid work has been associated with mental health benefits in employees, challenges in the transformation to hybrid persist particularly in public administration organizations which have been connected to a pronounced culture of presence and inadequate technical infrastructure. Further evidence on the link between hybrid working conditions and employee health is needed. To support the establishment of healthy hybrid working conditions, this study aims to identify employees' job demands, resources and support needs in public administration. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with N = 13 employees who work hybrid in public administration organizations in Northern Germany between February and May 2023. Interviewees were asked about their perceived job demands, resources, and support needs in hybrid work. The data was analyzed in a deductive-inductive approach of qualitative content analysis, primarily supported by the job demands-resources model as a theoretical framework. Results: Several job demands, e.g., an increase in work and meetings, and resources such as personal freedom and responsibility, were identified in the context of hybrid work. A multitude of the reported job resources and demands relate to work organization and social relationships. The results disclose discrepancies between participants' experiences of job demands and resources, underlining the subjectivity of employees' perceptions of hybrid working conditions. Interviewees' support needs for hybrid work also varied, encompassing structural-level aspects such as increased acceptance and promotion of hybrid work in the organization as well as behavioral-level aspects, for instance, strategies and self-discipline for boundaries and structure. Conclusions: This study provides a first comprehensive overview of the job demands, resources and support needs in hybrid work in public administration. This study builds an important basis for further research to understand the impact of hybrid working conditions on health-related employee outcomes. The identified support needs provide a valuable point of reference for health-promoting hybrid working conditions which public administration employers should begin establishing as early as possible in the ongoing transition to hybrid work. Background: The wounded healer concept refers to healthcare providers who, in the past, have had similar experiences to those of their clients and now draw on these challenging experiences to assist their clients. This study explored the positive traits of nurses with chronic cardiovascular diseases who transitioned to wounded healers. Methods: A qualitative content analysis study was conducted within hospitals in Tehran, Iran, between November 2023 and March 2024. Sampling was conducted using a purposive sampling method in accordance with the study objectives and inclusion criteria. The data were collected through semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Twenty-three participants, comprising 16 females and 7 males, participated in the interviews. Data analysis was conducted by employing a qualitative content analysis approach, including creating codes, subcategories, generic categories, and main categories. MAXQDA v20 software was utilized to facilitate the analysis process. Results: The data analysis revealed one main category that aligned with the research question: the positive traits of a wounded healer nurse, consisting of three generic categories: (1) traits related to interpersonal and professional relationships; (2) traits related to the professional dimension; and (3) traits related to the personal dimension. wounded healer nurses demonstrate positive traits that enhance patient care. Conclusions: The findings of this study have important implications for nursing practice and education. By identifying the positive traits exhibited by nurses as wounded healers affected by chronic cardiovascular diseases, nursing programs can emphasize and strengthen these qualities to convert challenges into opportunities and bridge the theory-practice gap. Background: Cancer disproportionately affects Hispanic populations, yet the preparedness of Hispanic caregiver–patient dyads facing cancer remains understudied. This study aims to identify essential components of preparedness needs and inform future psychosocial interventions for this demographic. Methods: Secondary analyses were conducted utilizing focus groups to develop a communication intervention for Hispanic patients and caregivers. Transcripts were qualitatively analyzed using NVivo v12 (2020). Results: Analysis revealed symptom management and treatment comprehension as pivotal aspects of preparation. Additionally, preparedness among our sample emerged by addressing the multifaceted dimensions of preparedness, including psychological, emotional, educational, familial, practical, financial, and spiritual aspects. Conclusions: Tailoring interventions encompassing diverse dimensions of preparedness can foster inclusivity and maximize their impact on supportive measures. This underscores the necessity for culturally sensitive approaches when delivering interventions supporting Hispanic individuals navigating the challenges of cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: A growing share of male nurses in the nursing profession in Tanzania has changed the trend of diversity of nursing gender. This might have created a divergent perspective within the communities. Therefore, the current study aimed to explore the perspective, encounters, and choices of nursing gender among licensed nurses, non-nurse healthcare providers, and clients in Tanzania. Methods: The study employed a qualitative descriptive design. The data were collected between August 2022 to January 2023 by the principal investigator and one research assistant. Twelve Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were carried out in four different hospitals in Dar es Salaam comprised of total participants (n = 59). The participants were nurses, clients, and non-nurse healthcare providers. The data was collected through an interview guide developed by the principal investigator and validated by nurse experts. The data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis to generate themes and subthemes. Results: Eight themes and twenty-seven subthemes emerged from the study. The following are themes; ① Variations of male and female nurses in communication ② Differences of male and female nurses in carrying out leadership roles ③ Divergent clinical qualities and outcomes across nursing gender ④ Positive value of male nurses in clinical facilities from colleagues and patients ⑤ Different cooperation of male and female nurses at the clinical settings ⑥ Mixed perspective towards clinical competencies across nursing gender ⑦ Perspective towards gender diversity in nursing ⑧ Preferences of nurse's gender, reasons, and opinion towards gender preferences. Conclusion: Male nurses and female nurses differ in how they communicate, execute leadership roles, and clinical qualities. However, their variations don't mean one gender is underrated than the other, but every gender has unique communication styles, leadership styles, and clinical qualities that both lead to effective outcomes. Diversity in nursing gender is very important and should be strategized. Since preferences of nursing gender seems to enhance somebody's freedom and creates an environment where a person can discuss sensitive issues, nursing bodies and healthcare stakeholders might initiate a discussion about approaches to promote the implementation of nursing preference and perform the feasibility studies. Background: To overcome of patients with COVID-19 over the capacity of hospitals and mild to moderate severity of the disease in most cases, the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States, recommend home care for these patients. Receiving care at home will face challenges that can be context-based, especially in crises like the Coronavirus pandemic. The present study aimed to describe the experiences of patients with COVID-19 and their relatives from receiving professional home care nursing. Methods: This study was conducted using a qualitative content analysis method. Nine participants with COVID-19 who were receiving home care nursing in Semnan participated in this study. The purposive sampling method was used. Sampling continued until no new categories appeared, meaning the category's theoretical saturation. Deep and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data based on the research question. Data was analyzed using the conventional content analysis method using Graneheim and Lundman's approach. Results: After analyzing the interviews and comparing codes based on similarities and differences, three main themes, 11 categories, and 30 subcategories were identified. The main themes included "The value of home care" (personalization of care, being economical, providing intellectual security, and reducing the concern of family), "Comprehensive care" (professional commitment, empathy, mastery in care, and patronage), and "Care challenges" (cultural barriers, inadequate services, and lack of information about costs and conditions). Conclusion: The patients with COVID-19 who received professional nursing care at home mentioned some challenges, such as the caregiver not being of the same sex as the patient, delay in receiving the service, the inadequacy of the centers, the limitation of the right to choose the care provider, and insufficient information about the cost of services received before receiving each care. Background: Dentists have a legal and ethical obligation to obtain informed consent from patients before carrying out treatment. In Uganda, the process of obtaining informed consent in dentistry is not well documented. The aim of the present study was to determine dentists' perspectives and practices regarding informed consent to fixed prosthodontic treatment (FPT) in Kampala Metropolitan, Uganda. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among 153 dentists from July to September 2023. Data were collected using a semi-structured self-administered questionnaire that included both closed- and open-ended questions. The questionnaire included items on participants' sociodemographic information, perspectives, and practices about informed consent for FPT. Perspectives were rated using ten items on a five-point Likert scale. The minimum possible total score was 10, and the maximum possible score was 50. Descriptive statistics and Poisson regression were used to summarize and analyze the quantitative data, and the significance level was set at p < 0.05. Open-ended items were analyzed using content analysis. Results: The majority (83.9%) of the participants were general dentists with working experience ranging from 1 to 38 years and a median of 8 years. The majority were familiar with the concept of informed consent and had positive perspectives regarding its use for FPT. The mean score for perspectives was 39.27 (SD, 5.42). However, there were variations in the practices of the dentists. More than three-quarters (87.6%) reported that they always obtained the patient's informed consent before FPT. Less than a third (29.4%) obtained written consent for FPT. About half of the dentists provided information regarding the procedure, benefits, and risks of treatment during the consent process. Bivariate analysis showed that the use of written consent for FPT was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with having a work experience of more than 10 years and having had training involving informed consent after undergraduate studies. Conclusion: The present study provides baseline data regarding perspectives and practices regarding informed consent for FPT among dentists in Uganda. It is recommended that regular training courses be developed to highlight the importance of improved informed consent practices for patient protection and to instruct dentists about obtaining valid informed consent. Background: Stress is a pervasive occurrence within certain professions, including nurses working in emergency and intensive care unit environments. Nurses in these settings often confront various stress-inducing factors, such as unsupportive management and distressing events like patient mortality, and experience notably higher levels of stress. Nevertheless, information is scarce regarding the precise level of stress in Ethiopia, particularly within southern hospitals. Objective: To assess stress levels and associated factors among nurses working in the critical care unit and emergency rooms at comprehensive specialized hospitals in southern Ethiopia, 2023. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional explanatory sequential mixed-method study was undertaken, involving a total of 239 nurses. For the quantitative component, all nurses working in intensive care units and emergency rooms were included as participants, while a purposive sampling technique was employed to select participants for the qualitative aspect. Data for the quantitative study were gathered through the utilization of self-administered questionnaires, while interviews were conducted using a structured interview guide for the qualitative portion. Quantitative data entry and analysis were performed using EpiDataV4.6 and the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software, respectively. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data was conducted using the OpenCode software. Results: The level of stress among nurses in the emergency and intensive care units was low (19.3%), moderate (55.9%), and high (24.8%). Workload (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 3.51, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.17–10.56) and time constraints (AOR = 2.5, 95% CI (1.03–6.07) were significantly associated with moderate stress level, while duty demands (AOR = 3.03, 95% CI (1.17–7.14), availability of medical equipment and supplies (AOR = 1.42, 95% CI (1.18–4.97), and witnessing death and dying (AOR = 2.34, 95% CI (1.13–5.88) were significantly associated with high-stress level. The qualitative data analysis revealed that the participants underscored the significant impact of organizational factors, individual factors, and profession-related factors on the stress levels experienced by nurses in emergency and critical care settings. Conclusion and recommendation: Based on the findings, the participants in this study experienced some level of stress, to varying degrees. Therefore, it is crucial to implement effective strategies such as optimizing staffing and workflow, improving communication and collaboration, providing adequate support and resources, leveraging technology and innovation, emphasizing patient-centered care, and implementing data-driven quality improvement to alleviate the burden. Aim: University start‐ups have gained significant popularity as a means of translating knowledge and research into practical applications. However, there is a lack of understanding regarding the experiences and perspectives of nursing faculties engaged in start‐up ventures. The objective of this study was to explore valuable insights into the barriers and facilitators within this context for promoting success, generating entrepreneurial attitudes, as well as enhancing the sustainability of nursing faculty‐led start‐ups. Design: We employed a content analysis methodology to capture the real‐life experiences of nursing faculties involved in university start‐ups. This approach is an effective way to gain a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Methods: Data were collected using semi‐structured interviews. Graneheim and Lundman's step was used for analysis and to identify recurring patterns and themes within the collected data. Sampling was done purposefully, with convenience and snowball techniques until data saturation. The MAXQDA version 10 software was utilised to easily analyse, code and present data. Results: The analysis revealed four major themes encompassed: motivational factors, personal attributes, limited entry support and barriers to scaling. These themes shed light on factors, support systems, challenges faced during growth as well as personal characteristics highlighted by the participants. Our study highlighted the factors influencing entrepreneurship in nursing faculties. Addressing the challenges of this study requires enhancing support systems and fostering personal development for entrepreneurial success in healthcare innovation. Dementia is recognised as one of the major global health and social care challenges of present times. When the onset of dementia occurs in midlife, there is an increased possibility that there are children and young adults involved who are dependent on the parent concerned. The aim of the study was to describe health and social care professionals' experiences of identifying and supporting children and young adults with a parent with dementia. A qualitative descriptive approach was carried out with individual interviews of health and social care professionals, using a semistructured interview guide. Thirteen participants in rural and urban areas in Sweden were interviewed. The overarching theme, advocating a forgotten group with three categories were identified. They combine and reflect health and social care professionals' experiences of identifying and supporting children and young adults with a parent with dementia. Health and social care professionals who encountered children and young adults with a parent with dementia described how they were not sufficiently trained in supporting this group and identified a general shortage of available appropriate support services. Background: Cancer affects the emotional well-being of patients and caregivers, highlighting the need for effective communication strategies. This study explores a community-based communication intervention for Latino caregiver–patient dyads coping with cancer. The acceptability of the intervention, along with its associated facilitators and barriers, are crucial considerations. Methods: Three focus group interviews involved healthcare providers, community partners, patients, and caregivers to discuss the communication needs of this population and the components of a communication intervention while identifying facilitators and barriers to the intervention. Qualitative thematic content analysis was conducted using Nvivo v12, ensuring reliability through independent analysis and consensus building. Results: Participants (89% female, average age of 53) included patients (30%), caregivers (30%), community partners (25%), and healthcare providers (15%), and they discussed the overall acceptability of adapting a communication intervention, where they emphasized benefits for caregivers and patients, primarily through support groups. Communication strategies accepted by participants include psychological support, cancer education, assertive communication skills, and methods for improved interactions with healthcare providers and extended family. Conclusions: Participants' responses align with the current literature, emphasizing problem-solving, mutual support, and communication strategies and underscoring the role of community partners. Aim: To explore factors promoting and hindering resilience in youth with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) based on Kumpfer's resilience framework. Design: A descriptive qualitative study design with an interpretative approach was used. Methods: Participants consisted of 10 youths with IBD from a tertiary hospital in Beijing (China) recruited using the purposive sampling method. Data were collected by semi‐structured interviews from December 2020 to March 2021. The directed content analysis was performed for data analysis. Results: Both promoting factors and hindering factors could be divided into personal factors and environmental factors. Thirteen themes were identified. The promoting factors included acceptance of illness, strict self‐management, previous treatment experience, life goals, family support, medical support and peer encouragement. Stigma, lack of communication, negative cognition, societal incomprehension, economic pressure and academic and employment pressure were hindering factors. Conclusion: Health care professionals need to develop greater awareness of factors, stemming from both the individual and the outside world, that hinder or promote resilience in order to aid young patients with IBD. Objective: In Iran, the majority of emergency medical services (EMS) personnel are male; hence, one of their distinct and crucial missions is the prehospital childbirth mission, which might be significantly challenging for both personnel and patients. To obtain in-depth and authentic data, the present study was conducted to elucidate the barriers and facilitators of prehospital childbirth missions based on the experiences of EMS personnel. Methods: A qualitative study employing conventional content analysis was conducted in 2023. Participants were selected through purposive sampling from EMS personnel willing to participate in the study and who have experiences with missions leading to childbirth. Data saturation was reached through in-depth semi-structured interviews with 14 participants. Data accuracy and credibility were confirmed using the Lincoln & Guba criteria. Results: The results included two main themes including barriers and facilitators. Barriers were categorized into "gender-related barriers" and "personnel barriers." While "appropriate communication" and "efforts to preserve privacy" were the primary facilitator themes. Conclusion: The findings revealed that EMS personnel face considerable barriers in the process of these missions. Therefore, for optimal performance quality in this prominent mission, it is recommended that clinical and educational policymakers consider actively recruiting female personnel, focusing on enhancing communication and practical skills and securing the patient’s privacy. The factors related to conflicts in emergency departments (EDs) have been studied for decades. The post-pandemic digital era may transform the medical landscape in EDs, potentially changing the patterns of conflict between healthcare professionals. This study used focus group interviews to explore conflicts in EDs. Four groups, each with 4–6 participants, took part in this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using six research questions. Summative content analysis was used to analyze the data. The participant's average age was 37.82 years, and the average number of working years was 12.12. The following five themes emerged: multiple patterns of internal conflict; external conflicts arising from cross-departmental coordination; conflicts due to unclear job boundaries; adapting to conflicts in diverse ways; and seeking hospital arbitration. The results of this study suggest extending interdisciplinary collaborative practice from emergency departments to all coordinating departments. Self-perceived recovery after stroke can substantially impact quality of life. Yet, a disability paradox exists whereby disability and perceived recovery do not align. This study explored stroke survivors' perceptions of their communication and mobility recovery, including perceived facilitators and barriers. Potential differences between the experiences of participants with aphasia (PWA) and participants without aphasia (PWOA) were also examined to explore the impact of communication disability on recovery experience. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 17 adults with stroke 3 months after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation. Qualitative data in the form of interview transcripts were analyzed using thematic content analysis. Participants described their communication recovery primarily in terms of word-finding difficulty and slowed language formulation; they described their mobility recovery in terms of their ability to walk, their use of an assistive device, or their ability to participate in pre-stroke activities. Facilitators to recovery were described in the areas of (1) family involvement, (2) rehabilitation services and professionals, (3) personal factors, and (4) the need for self-reliance. Barriers were expressed in the domains of (1) physical difficulties, (2) communication difficulties, and (3) psychological difficulties. Key findings from this study include perceived needs for a high intensity of rehabilitation, earlier implementation of communication partner training for families of stroke survivors with communication impairments, and consideration of factors outside of stroke when tailoring intervention to the individual. Overall, these findings suggest a continued need for individuation rather than standardization of care, with an eye to both impairment and broader quality of life factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Patients in the post-resuscitation period experience critical conditions and require high-quality care. Identifying the challenges that critical care nurses encounter when caring for resuscitated patients is essential for improving the quality of their care. Aim: This study aimed to identify the challenges encountered by critical care nurses in providing care during the post-resuscitation period. Methods: A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews. Sixteen nurses working in the intensive care units of three teaching hospitals were selected through purposive sampling. The Data collected were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Results: Participants experienced individual, interpersonal, and organizational challenges when providing post-resuscitation care. The most significant challenges include inadequate clinical knowledge and experience, poor management and communication skills, lack of support from nurse managers, role ambiguity, risk of violence, and inappropriate attitudes of physicians towards nurses' roles. Additionally, nurses expressed a negative attitude towards resuscitated patients. Conclusion: Critical care nurses face several challenges in providing care for resuscitated patients. To enhance the quality of post-resuscitation care, address the challenges effectively and improve long-time survival it is crucial to implement interventions such as In-service education, post-resuscitation briefing, promotion of interprofessional collaboration among healthcare teams, providing sufficient human resources, clarifying nurses' roles in the post-resuscitation period and increasing support from nursing managers. Background: About one million people in need of home care in Germany are assisted by 15,400 home care services. Home healthcare is mostly a complex endeavour because interprofessional collaboration is often challenging. This might negatively impact patient safety. The project interprof HOME aims to develop an interprofessional person-centred care concept for people receiving home care in a multistep approach. In one of the work packages we explored how people receiving home care, relatives, nurses, general practitioners, and therapists (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists) perceive collaboration in this setting. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 people receiving home care and with 21 relatives. Additionally, we worked with nine monoprofessional focus groups involving nurses of home care services (n = 17), general practitioners (n = 14), and therapists (n = 21). The data were analysed by content analysis. Results: Three main categories evolved: "perception of interprofessional collaboration", "means of communication", and "barriers and facilitators". People receiving home care and relatives often perceive little to no interprofessional collaboration and take over a significant part of the organisational coordination and information exchange. Interprofessional collaboration in steady care situations does exist at times and mostly occurs in coordination tasks. Contact and information exchange are rare, however, interprofessional personal encounters are sporadic, and fixed agreements and permanent contact persons are not standard. These trends increase with the complexity of the healthcare situation. Joint collaborations are often perceived as highly beneficial. Means of communications such as telephone, fax, or e-mail are used differently and are often considered tedious and time-consuming. No interprofessional formal written or electronic documentation system exists. Personal acquaintance and mutual trust are perceived as being beneficial, while a lack of mutual availability, limited time, and inadequate compensation hinder interprofessional collaboration. Conclusions: Interprofessional collaboration in home care occurs irregularly, and coordination often remains with people receiving home care or relatives. While this individual care set-up may work sufficiently well in low complex care situations, it becomes vulnerable to disruptions with increasing complexity. Close interactions, joint collaboration, and fixed means of communication might improve healthcare at home. The findings were integrated into the development of the person-centred interprofessional care concept interprof HOME. Aim: To describe the crisis management competencies needed in a hospital setting during the COVID‐19 pandemic from the perspective of nurse leaders. Background: The COVID‐19 pandemic generated many challenges for nurse leaders in hospitals, and management competencies are highlighted. However, there is little evidence available about nurse leaders' perceptions of the crisis management competencies needed in such situations. Methods: A qualitative, descriptive, semi‐structured interview study of nurse leaders (n = 20) was conducted between June and October 2021 in one Finnish central hospital. The data were analysed using inductive content analysis. Results: The analysis yielded five main categories of crisis management competencies needed in a hospital setting during the pandemic: interactive communication competence, psychological resource management competence, systematic and proactive organising competence, active networking abilities and practices and change management approach in crisis management. Conclusions: Nurse leaders need new and different crisis management competencies in hospital organisations. The COVID‐19 pandemic changed the working culture of nurse leaders, as they faced challenges that needed knowledge and skills beyond their previous management competence. Implications for nursing management: Additional training for nurse leaders in crisis management is needed. This training should reflect the competencies identified as necessary in crisis situations so that nurse leaders will be able to manage crisis situations effectively in future. Introduction/Objectives: With growing vaccination misinformation and mistrust, strategies to improve vaccination communication across community-based settings are needed. Methods: The Rural Adolescent Vaccine Enterprise (RAVE), a 5-year (2018-2022) stepped-wedge cluster randomized study, tested a clinic-based practice facilitation intervention designed to improve HPV vaccination. An exploratory aim sought to explore the use of partnerships between primary care clinics and a community partner of their choosing, to implement a social marketing campaign related to HPV immunization. We assessed perceptions about the value and success of the partnership, and barriers and facilitators to its implementation using a 29-item community partner survey, key informant interviews, and field notes from practice facilitators. Results: Of the initial 45 clinics participating in RAVE, 9 were unable to either start or complete the study, and 36 participants (80.0%) were actively engaged. Of these, 16/36 clinics (44.4%) reported establishing successful partnerships, 10 reported attempting to develop partnerships (27.8%), and another 10 reported not developing a partnership (27.8%), which were often caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The most common partnership was with public health departments at 27.3%. Other partnerships involved libraries, school districts, and local businesses. More than half (63.7%) reported that creating messages regarding getting HPV vaccination was moderately to very challenging. Just under half reported (45.5%) that messaging was hard because of a lack of understanding about the seriousness of diseases caused by HPV, parents being against vaccines because of safety concerns, and religious values that result in a lack of openness to HPV vaccines. Community partners' health priorities changed as a result of RAVE, with 80% prioritizing childhood immunizations as a result of the RAVE partnership. Conclusions: Community groups want to partner with primary care organizations to serve their patients and populations. More research is needed on how best to bring these groups together. Introduction. With reliable tests and preventative treatments now available the United Kingdom has introduced a prototype population-based paediatric (ages 3–13) screening programme for type 1 diabetes (T1D). To aid its ethical and sustainable implementation this work explores parental views around the concept of this programme to determine how their involvement might be encouraged and supported. Research Design and Methods. Qualitative interviews were undertaken with 38 parents and the data were analysed using a purposely developed "Burden of Screening" framework, which presented the data within three domains describing the various elements of screening participation; pre-screening tasks designated to participants; factors influencing engagement with screening; and consequences of screening participation. Results. Regarding pre-screening tasks designated to participants, the importance of clear communication about the condition were apparent with parents expressing uncertainty of the benefits of screening against the potential anxiety engendered. In factors influencing their engagement with screening participants described their preference for less invasive testing techniques, the reassurance of structured support from healthcare professionals inherent within the programme, and the potential benefit of peer support. Regarding the consequences of screening participation parents described how a positive result might lead to overly protective behaviours, and anxiety from watching and waiting for the onset of symptomatic T1D. Conclusions. The benefits of T1D screening need to be clearly communicated to facilitate uptake. To this end the use of decision-support tools and better targeted educational materials should be explored. Background. There are many different haematological malignancy subtypes. Most follow chronic pathways that are uncertain and unpredictable, which may lead to feelings of anxiety and distress. The provision of information can ameliorate such difficulties, but patients are known to have unmet needs in this regard. The aim of this study is to explore experiences of information sharing among patients with chronic blood cancers and the factors impacting this process. Methods. The study is set within a UK cohort of blood cancer patients, where care is provided across 14 hospitals according to national clinical guidelines. Purposive sampling was used to identify expert participants (based on experience), and in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with 35 patients, 10 with a relative present. The study was intended to inform practice and utilised qualitative description, with thematic content analysis and systematic data coding. Results. Experiences of information sharing varied. Most patients described this positively, but not all. Several barriers and facilitators were identified, which are discussed within five themes: (1) shock affects ability to process information, (2) the importance of time to facilitate information exchange, (3) personal relationships have an impact on meeting information needs, (4) HCP interpersonal skills are central to good information sharing, and (5) communication skills and terminology. Conclusions. Patients with chronic blood cancers prefer to engage in information sharing when they are not in a state of shock, and when they have adequate time to process material that is effectively and sensitively delivered, by HCPs they know and trust. Background: Diagnostic uncertainty is common, but its communication to patients is under‐explored. This study aimed to (1) characterise variation in doctors' communication of diagnostic uncertainty and (2) explore why variation occurred. Methods: Four written vignettes of clinical scenarios involving diagnostic uncertainty were developed. Doctors were recruited from five hospitals until theoretical saturation was reached (n = 36). Participants read vignettes in a randomised order, and were asked to discuss the diagnosis/plan with an online interviewer, as they would with a 'typical patient'. Semi‐structured interviews explored reasons for communication choices. Interview transcripts were coded; quantitative and qualitative (thematic) analyses were undertaken. Results: There was marked variation in doctors' communication: in their discussion about differential diagnoses, their reference to the level of uncertainty in diagnoses/investigations and their acknowledgement of diagnostic uncertainty when safety‐netting. Implicit expressions of uncertainty were more common than explicit. Participants expressed both different communication goals (including reducing patient anxiety, building trust, empowering patients and protecting against diagnostic errors) and different perspectives on how to achieve these goals. Training in diagnostic uncertainty communication is rare, but many felt it would be useful. Conclusions: Significant variation in diagnostic uncertainty communication exists, even in a controlled setting. Differing communication goals—often grounded in conflicting ethical principles, for example, respect for autonomy versus nonmaleficence—and differing ideas on how to prioritise and achieve them may underlie this. The variation in communication behaviours observed has important implications for patient safety and health inequalities. Patient‐focused research is required to guide practice. Introduction: Many researchers want to include seldom involved groups, such as refugees and youth, in patient and public involvement (PPI), but experience a number of barriers. The PPI research community calls for critical evaluations that are prospective, data‐based and conducted by researchers and public contributors together. In this study, we conducted a longitudinal evaluation of a core activity in all collaborations: communication strategies. The aim was to evaluate the communication strategies adopted throughout a research project with refugee youth coresearchers. Methods: This article is based on the evaluation of a project where refugee youth were involved in the online adaptation of a group‐based programme for youth with posttraumatic stress. Behavioural observations and field notes collected during the project were analysed with qualitative content analysis and a readability index, and discussed through the lens of epistemic injustice. The article was cowritten by researchers and refugee youth. Findings: Four manifest categories were identified: Facilitating engagement through coplanning and circumstantial flexibility; Different needs require different channels; It's not just about the channel—facilitation skills matter; Finding a common language opens a communicative flow. In addition, a latent underlying theme reflecting the role of trust was identified: Interactive moments facilitate trust—trust facilitates richer involvement. Conclusion: At the core of the identified communication strategies were strengthening relationship‐building and actively facilitating involvement. Establishing trusting relationships enabled refugee youth to share input. The communication strategies increased hermeneutical justice by contributing to a common understanding; thus, taking a step towards ameliorating epistemic injustice. Background: Indiscriminate use of laboratory blood testing in hospitals contributes to patient discomfort and healthcare waste. Patient engagement in low‐value healthcare can help reduce overuse. Understanding patient experience is necessary to identify opportunities to improve patient engagement with in‐hospital laboratory testing. Objectives: To understand patient experience with the process of in‐hospital laboratory blood testing. Methods: We used a qualitative study design via semistructured interviews conducted online or over the phone. Participants were adult patients or family members/caregivers (≥18 years of age) with a recent (within 12 months of interview) experience of hospitalization in Alberta or British Columbia, Canada. We identified participants through convenience sampling and conducted interviews between May 2021 and June 2022. We analysed transcripts using thematic content analysis. Recruitment was continued until code saturation was reached. Results: We interviewed 16 participants (13 patients, 1 family member and 2 caregivers). We identified four themes from patients' experiences of in‐hospital laboratory blood testing: (i) patients need information from healthcare teams about expected blood testing processes, (ii) blood draw processes should consider patient comfort and preferences, (iii) patients want information from their healthcare teams about the rationale and frequency of blood testing and (iv) patients need information on how their testing results affect their medical care. Conclusion: Current laboratory testing processes in hospitals do not facilitate shared decision‐making and patient engagement. Patient engagement with laboratory testing in hospitals requires an empathetic healthcare team that provides clear communication regarding testing procedures, rationale and results, while considering patient preferences and offering opportunities for involvement. Our findings show correlations between patient needs and patient recommendations to make testing processes more patient‐centred. Our patient research partners informed the research design, co‐developed participant recruitment strategies, co‐conducted data collection and informed the data analysis. Background: Our knowledge about the attitudes of healthcare staff to palliative care in pediatric oncology is scarce. We aimed to assess their perceptions of palliative care in Hungary and find answers to the question of how to provide good palliative care for children. Method: Physicians (n = 30) and nurses (n = 43) working in the field of pediatric oncology (12 of them specialized in hospice care) were interviewed. Palliative care practice (communication, integration of palliative care, professionals' feelings and attitudes, and opportunities for improvement) was assessed by semi-structured interviews evaluated in a mixed quantitative and qualitative way by narrative categorical content analysis and thematic analysis. Results: All providers displayed high negative emotions, positive evaluations, and used many active verbs. Nurses showed higher levels of denial, more self-references, and were more likely to highlight loss. Physicians emphasized the importance of communication regarding adequate or inadequate palliative care. Hospice specialists showed a higher passive verb rate, a lower self-reference, a lower need for psychological support, and a greater emphasis on teamwork and professional aspects. Conclusion: Our results show that nurses are more emotionally stressed than doctors in palliative care in pediatric oncology. To our knowledge, a study comparing doctors and nurses in this field has yet to be carried out. Our results suggest that pediatric oncological staff can positively evaluate a child's palliative care despite the emotional strain. Regarding hospices, professional practice in palliative care may be a protective factor in reducing emotional distress and achieving professional well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: A high percentage of cancer patients may experience emotional distress. Oncology nurses are expected to play an important role in recognizing emotional distress and planning and delivering care that meets the individual needs of each patient. However, few studies have focused on the experiences of clinical nurses in such cases. This study adopted a qualitative research method to gain an in-depth understanding of the experience of nursing staff in caring for cancer patients with emotional distress. Methods: A qualitative descriptive design and semi-structured interviews were used in this study. Twenty-one oncology nurses were interviewed, and the qualitative content analysis suggested by Graneheim & Lundman (2004) was used to interpret the data. Results: Six themes were identified, as follows: (1) dictating the abnormality of emotion, (2) soothing and comforting patients, (3) a lack of psychology knowledge and communication skills, (4) negative impacts of a lack of time, (5) managing emotional labor, and (6) reflecting on the experiences. Conclusion: Hospital administrators should arrange pre-employment education and training as well as on-the-job education to help nurses in caring for cancer patients with emotional distress. They should also focus attention on the personal emotional states of nursing staff in a timely manner and provide psychological support and emotional counseling as necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Stunting is influenced by family and household factors that affect toddler nutrition. As the primary provider of both physical and psychological resources to prevent health problems, the family has a significant role in preventing stunting. Family resilience in supporting child health is mediated by family functioning. A qualitative descriptive study explored the influence of family resilience in fulfilling the nutritional needs of stunted children. This study involved in-depth interviews with 23 mothers of stunted children aged 24 to 59 months. Through content analysis, we identified three main themes: (1) family belief that stunting is hereditary, (2) family belief that stunted children will "grow up," and (3) lack of communication between family members in discussing stunting. The Kenyan Ministry of Health (MOH) and a consortium of nutritionists, researchers and communication, and design specialists developed a novel approach to create an evidence‐based recipe book promoting complementary feeding (CF) in Kenya. The ADAPT approach includes five steps: applied research (A), dialogue with stakeholders (D), adapted behaviour change communication (BCC) theories (A), purpose‐driven visual communication (P), and tailoring to priority audiences (T). Through this approach, the recipe book addresses key knowledge gaps using behaviour change theories and visual communication best practice to increase accessibility, acceptability, retention and motivation for behaviour change. The book addresses barriers to CF identified through formative applied research. Dialogue with stakeholders helped ensure cultural appropriateness and the book's alignment with MOH recommendations and key messages. The book uses behaviour change theories to approach the reader in a respectful way that motivates behaviour change. The use of consistent, purpose‐driven visuals helps ensure key messages are easily understood and accessible to all caregivers regardless of literacy level. The book's tone and content are tailored to its audiences’ attributes, needs and preferences. This five‐step process inspired the development of ADAPT, a novel approach that integrates behaviour change and visual communication for greater impact. This paper outlines how the consortium used the ADAPT approach to develop an evidence‐based book that thoughtfully and holistically addresses a wide range of barriers, provides practical solutions and increases self‐efficacy around CF. Aim: The present study aimed to explain the barriers to effective clinical supervision from the perspective of nurses. Design: Qualitative descriptive study. Methods: The present study enrolled 21 nurses selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi‐structured interviews, which were digitally recorded and immediately transcribed verbatim, and analysed using content analysis method. Results: From the nurses' perspective, the influential barriers included poor academic, ethical, communicational, professional competencies at the passive management level, defects in supervision prerequisites, conventional beliefs, ineffective organization, shortage of workforce at the level of inappropriate context, lack of motivation and poor accountability at inadequate professional maturity level. Public Contribution: The following items affect how clinical supervision is implemented: Motivation, accountability at the personal level, sufficient workforce, conducive conditions, effective organization of resources, and preparing the individual for supervision at the organizational level to implement effective clinical supervision. Registered nurses must possess patient safety expertise regardless of their level. However, patient safety skills are the most crucial competency for new graduate nurses, which they must accomplish before working autonomously. Nevertheless, assessing these competencies is difficult due to the need for quality assessment tools to improve their competence in providing safe care. This study aimed to develop and test the Thai-Patient Safety Competency Scale for new graduate nurses, according to Thailand Nursing and Midwifery requirements. A descriptive design with two phases and eight steps was applied. The new instrument was examined for construct validity, known-group validity, and internal consistency reliability using factor analysis, t-test, and Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The sample comprised ten experts, 403 new graduate nurses, and 56 registered nurses. The results showed 58 items composed of eight domains: ethical and legal aspects of patient safety, nursing practices to prevent or minimize harm from healthcare errors, professional characteristics regarding patient safety, risk management and quality improvement, academic and research skills regarding patient safety, effective communication in healthcare teams, use of technology and informatics for patient safety, and policy and networks regarding patient safety. This Thai-Patient Safety Competency Scale had good construct validity. In addition, the tool could discriminate the patient safety competency between new and experienced graduate nurses. It had good internal consistency and reliability. Thus, it can be used to assess and train new graduate nurses to increase their competency for patient safety. Objective: Virtual care (VC) is an accepted modality of care delivery, and shared decision‐making (SDM) benefits patients with rheumatologic and chronic conditions (RCCs). Unfortunately, research suggests reduced quality of SDM during VC. This study explores the benefits and shortcomings of SDM regarding RCCs during VC with suggestions for optimally using VC during SDM. Methods: Following Stiggelbout's framework for SDM, we conducted focus groups of patients with RCCs and providers to understand their experiences with SDM during VC, probing for facilitating and challenging factors. We conducted content analysis of the transcripts, defining themes, and inductively reasoned to identify relationships among themes. We summarized the facilitators, barriers, and opportunities for improving SDM during VC that participants proposed. Results: Virtual SDM shares several similarities with in‐person practice, as both draw upon trusting patient‐provider relationships, following the same general steps, and relying on effective communication. VC presents solutions for known barriers to in‐person SDM, expanding time for making decisions and access to care. Technology and virtual health systems introduce new barriers to SDM, and participants list opportunities for overcoming these concerns. Conclusion: VC is a tool that can enhance and even support superior SDM compared with in‐person visits when implemented successfully, a condition requiring the development of nuanced skills to correctly identify when and how to best use VC for SDM as well as technology and health care structures that integrate SDM into VC. Aim. To explore and describe nurse managers' experiences of how the COVID-19 pandemic affected their leadership work. Background. As frontline leaders in healthcare, the work of nurse managers was dominated by the global COVID-19 pandemic in recent years. Method. Semistructured interviews were carried out during autumn 2021 at a Finnish university hospital. Twelve nurse managers participated in video call interviews, and the data were analysed by inductive content analysis. Results. Four main categories of COVID-19 effect on the nurse managers' leadership work were identified: increased work requirements; changes in work content; crisis communication; and human resources. The main categories included a total of 14 subcategories. Conclusion. The complexity and range of nurse managers' leadership work during the pandemic were emphasized. Nurse managers performed several important tasks that ensured ongoing delivery of healthcare services. Flexibility, ability to solve problems, capacity to tolerate uncertainty, pressure and rapidly evolving situations, excellent crisis communicational skills, and an ability to address the diverse needs of their staff were key competencies that nurse managers relied on during this period. Implications for Nursing Management. Nurse managers' experiences of COVID-19 can inform practice, policies, nursing, and nursing leadership education in relation to future crises. (1) Background: The Austrian health care system is extremely fragmented. Primary care is mainly provided by self-employed GPs. Other health professionals are rarely integrated into primary care. But, according to the political plans of the Austrian government, a system of community nurses and community health nurses should be implemented and several pilot projects have already been started. (2) Objective: The present study explores the skills and competences needed in the planning, management and collaboration for the change in the system and gives recommendations for community health nurse education in Austria. (3) Methodology: Fifteen qualitative, problem-centered interviews were conducted with experts in the field of community health nursing and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. (4) Results: The skills and competences often and widely mentioned are interprofessional collaboration, cooperation with other actors, systems thinking, project and change management, and basic management skills, including strategic planning, communication, accounting and finance. Areas such as health planning and lobbying are also highlighted. The main competences are broken down into subcompetences, making it possible to create a detailed competence grid. Competences in planning, management and collaboration are particularly important in the initial stages of the first implementation of a community health nursing system. (5) Conclusions: Skills and competences in these areas occupy a central position. A multilayered breakdown of these competences is required in order to create a targeted requirements profile. Due to the small-scale fragmentation of the Austrian health care system, collaboration and coordination are more difficult and costly, but all the more important. Background: Traditional medicine (TM) plays a key role in maintaining health in many societies. Given the requirement for TM disclosure, Allopathic Medicine Practitioners (AMPs) must encourage open communication with patients to persuade those who use TM to disclose. Addressing patient non-disclosure of TM requires this dialogue to be facilitated. We sought to understand and describe how South African AMPs facilitate disclosure of TM use during a consultation with patients who use both TM and allopathic medicine (AM) and how it influences the patients' willingness to disclose TM use. Methods: This qualitative exploratory descriptive study on AMPs at Gauteng district public hospitals in South Africa was conducted between 2021 and 2022. Non-probability purposive sampling was employed to select a sample of 14 AMPs. Individual participants were encouraged to share their unique experiences and interpretations of the phenomenon concerning TM use disclosure. The raw transcribed textual data were processed using ATLAS.ti, and inductive content analysis was undertaken following the coding of the content to identify categories. Results: The data revealed four major categories: 'providing a suitable atmosphere for disclosure,' 'encouraging patients to disclose TM usage to AMPs,' 'patient autonomy,' and 'AMP training'. During a consultation with patients who use both TM and AM, participants expressed their experiences and perceptions of TM nondisclosure. They also discussed several methods for encouraging patients to disclose their TM usage, particularly when TM is used concurrently with AM. Conclusion: This study expands on previously reported findings by describing how South African AMPs facilitate the disclosure of TM use during consultation. Many AMPs struggle to initiate TM conversations with their patients which results in non-disclosure. This study revealed that integrating TM into AM training programmes, promoting cross-practice, and creating a safe environment is necessary for the development and application of the most appropriate approaches that would assist in facilitating disclosure. Purpose Knowledge advancement exposes the pharmacists to new ethical and professional challenges in providing pharmaceutical care. The pharmacist's attitude towards the ethical challenges of pharmacy practice could be of great help in assessing pharmacist's ethical sensitivity. This study aimed to design a valid and reliable questionnaire for measuring pharmacists' attitudes. Methods The present study is the second phase of a sequential exploratory mixed-method study for designing and psychometric evaluation of the questionnaire. In the first phase the questionnaire was developed using semi-structured interviews followed by content analysis. The psychometric evaluation of the questionnaire was performed examining the validity (face, content, and construct), and reliability (internal consistency and Intraclass Correlation Coefficient and Standard Error of Measurement) in a sample of pharmacists practicing in community pharmacies in Tehran and Tabriz, Iran (n = 504). The construct validity of the questionnaire was determined using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results The Scale-Content Validity Index/Average (S-CVI/AVE) was calculated at 0.84. The results of exploratory factor analysis supported 22 items in four factors including regulations and rules, professional communications, providing and supplying medicine, and consultation and providing pharmaceutical care that are explained by a total of 49.50% of the variance. Also, confirmatory factor analysis confirmed goodness of fit indices and model fit. Cronbach's alpha Coefficient was 0.919 and ICC was 0.914. Conclusions The psychometric evaluation of the present questionnaire shows a native, valid and reliable instrument to assess pharmacists' attitudes toward ethical challenges which could be a mirror of pharmacists ethical sensitivity. Purpose: This qualitative study describes nurses' experiences and perceptions of how they develop the clinical gaze. Methods: This qualitative study used an inductive approach and content analysis to assess the experiences of newly graduated nurses, nurse managers, and nursing teachers. Nineteen interviews were conducted. To achieve credibility, the study followed the guidelines of the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative research (COREQ). Results: Two themes emerged: nurses' personal abilities and the learning culture. Learning culture was considered the foundation of the development of the clinical gaze. The clinical gaze was found to be developed in relationships with patients and when learning together with colleagues, in which the opportunities for reflection are central. To develop the clinical gaze, structures for learning activities, such as reflection, communication exercises, and simulation, are needed so that they become a natural part of daily work. This can also be achieved through supervision and skills training both at university and in a care context. Conclusions: Prerequisites for the development of the clinical gaze include physical presence with the patient combined with learning activities such as conscious reflection with others in a safe learning culture. Purpose: To describe the patient's experience of participation in their care when admitted for elective surgical procedures. Materials and methods: A purposive sample of 14 patients who had undergone elective surgery was included in semi-structured individual interviews at a university hospital. The data was analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results: One theme was identified: Creating a meaningful relationship to enable participation in the care, based on three categories; Abilities, willingness, and a lack of experience affect participation, A professional approach with an open communication and individualized information, and The importance of structural factors. Conclusions: To meet the patient's individual needs and wishes regarding participation, meaningful relationships need to be created between patient and healthcare personnel. The results also indicate that the patients have insufficient knowledge about their role regarding participation. To improve patient participation, its meaning needs to be clarified individually to the patient, emphasizing the importance to be active involved in his or her own care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To explore nurses' experiences of using the Integrated Palliative care Outcome Scale (IPOS) as a communication tool in specialized palliative care. Design: This study employed a qualitative inductive approach. The Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research were followed for reporting. Methods: Five focus groups were conducted with nurses from four specialized palliative care units, and the discussions were analysed with quality content analysis. Results: Using IPOS for communication with the patient gave an opportunity to understand the patient's care needs and to let these care needs guide care interventions. Prerequisites in terms of relation, atmosphere, skills and flexibility were needed to establish an interactive communication. It was challenging to communicate about issues that evoked emotional reactions in the patient. There was a balancing act between the use of a structured scale and overcoming communication challenges. Nonetheless, when the two complemented each other, IPOS was a useful tool for nurses to promote person‐centred care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Long COVID provides a new context in which primary health care needs to be re-examined, especially because it has health and social dimensions. Primary care physicians' experiences and perceptions of caring for patients with long COVID are an underexplored area. Aim: To explore the experiences of Slovenian primary care physicians in management and treatment of patients with long COVID. Design & setting: A qualitative interview study of physicians in Slovenian primary care. Method: Semi-structured interviews were held with physicians who had treated patients with long COVID until saturation was reached. The interviews were carried out between November 2021 and April 2022. Qualitative content analysis (QCA) was used to analyse the data collected. Results: Seventeen participants were interviewed. The following five categories were defined based on the coding process: the definition and symptoms of long COVID; social exclusion; sick leave and returning to the work environment; cooperation with rehabilitation centres; and the importance of trust and good communication with the patient. Conclusion: The study showed the experiences of Slovenian primary care physicians in the management and treatment of long COVID. The problems related to long COVID were divided into two groups: health problems and psychosocial problems. Slovenian physicians have the greatest problems with dealing with the patient's ability to work. It was found that adequate communication and trust between physicians and patients are two important indicators for an integrated model of managing long COVID. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Improvements in nurses' and midwives' education will increase workforce quantity and quality. Continual improvement of organization performance is based on continual measuring; Appropriate indicators must be selected to measure and appraise the performances. This study aimed to recognize and categorize key performance indicators (KPIs) for baccalaureate nursing education institutions' performance measurement. Methods: This study had two phases: (1) Interview: Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with faculty members and nurses. (2) Narrative Literature review: schools' and universities' reports and web pages were assessed to recognize KPIs. The data analysis method was directed content analysis. The Donabedian Model components were used to guide the data analysis. Results: The total number of indicators retrieved was 468; 75 were from interviews with faculty members and nurses and 393 were from the literature review. Indicators were categorized into: Structure (staff; equipment, resources, and facilities; guidelines), Process (education; communication and collaboration; evaluation), and Outcome (survey and accreditation; national and international recognition; satisfaction; sustainability and financial efficiency; students; alumni; knowledge related to the field). Conclusions: A number of indicators were identified that were categorized into various groups related to the performance of nursing schools. Further investigations are needed with different groups of stakeholders including students, professional associations, healthcare institutions, alumni, and clients. As well in some areas, new or composite indicators may need to be developed. Also, each institution needs to select appropriate indicators based on its context, policy goals, and infrastructure.
