High‐performance polycrystalline calcium cobaltite ceramic was synthesized via electrospinning of nanoribbons, followed by dual‐process compaction using spark plasma sintering and edge‐free spark plasma texturing. The combination of nanoribbon electrospinning and this multistage sintering technique was employed for the first time and resulted in exceptionally well‐textured thermoelectric ceramics. The textured ceramic had excellent thermoelectric properties. At 1073 K, the ceramic exhibited an electrical conductivity of 268 S cm−1, a Seebeck coefficient of 247 µV K−1 and a heat conductivity of 3.3 W m−1 K−1. In addition, the power factor and figure‐of‐merit reached enormously high values of 16.3 µW cm−1 K−2 and 0.53, respectively. This represents the highest thermoelectric performance reported to date not only for electrospun, polycrystalline calcium cobaltite fiber ceramics, but also for undoped polycrystalline calcium cobaltite ceramics. This paper presents an innovative solution for 3D character model texture mapping based on artificial intelligence (AI) image generation models. This study explored the potential of AI-generated textures to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the traditional manual workflow. By leveraging state-of-the-art AI image generation techniques, we proposed a new workflow that could address existing challenges in the current texture mapping process. This research began with an introduction to AI image generation models with a review of the current status and applications of these models in texture map generation. We then identified and analyzed issues associated with the existing character model texture workflow, highlighting inefficiencies and areas for improvement. Our proposed AI-assisted workflow aimed to streamline the texture creation process, significantly reducing the time required while maintaining high-quality outputs. To validate the new workflow, we conducted a series of experiments with professional 3D artists, yielding clear and significant results. The new AI-assisted workflow significantly reduced texture creation time by an average of 76% to 89% compared to traditional manual methods, demonstrating its potential to drastically improve efficiency. Qualitative feedback from artists highlighted that the new workflow not only streamlined the process, but also made it more user-friendly and accessible. However, some limitations were identified, including the need for further refinement of AI-generated textures to achieve a quality level comparable to those created by highly skilled artists. Abstract. Today, the use of 3D visualization technologies is one of the key directions in the field of information technologies. The 3D direction has become extremely popular in many fields, such as architecture, interior design, game industry, medicine, automotive and other fields. This method opens up new opportunities for perception and interpretation of information, adding it to a three-dimensional virtual space. The topic of the research work is the creation of a software module (addon) for the Blender3D program, which will provide the user with a library of ready-made materials, divided by categories. This addon has similar functionality to Substance Painter and Quixel Mixer, the main functions of which are to create and adjust materials and textures for imported ready-made 3D models. The addon has its own name "QuickShader" and will provide the user with 8 shaders and 35 PBR materials. Throughout the development of the project, the Waterfall life cycle model was used, stability and a clear structure were put first, which helped to efficiently work through each step of creating an addon for the Blender program. In the conclusion to the scientific work, it can also be noted that the development of a software addon for Blender3D, which includes a library of shader operators and PBR materials, will greatly facilitate the work of users when assigning textures to objects on the scene. A library of shader operators makes it easy to implement and customize shaders for light, glass, and some metals, giving you more control over the visual aspect of the scene. PBR materials provide realism due to the accurate representation of physical properties using Physically Based Rendering technologies. This addon gives users the ability to interact more effectively with procedural materials, providing a quick means to create realistic renders. This module automates the creation of materials by providing a list of prepared shaders and textures that can be applied to scene objects. The user will be provided with a set of ready-made shaders (glass, light material, metals) and PBR materials (wood, fabric, metals, and others), which can be applied with one button on the module panel.

With the popularity of 3D content like virtual tours, the challenges of 3D data registration have become increasingly significant. The registration of heterogeneous data obtained from 2D and 3D sensors is required to create photo-realistic 3D models. However, the alignment of 2D images with 3D models introduces a significant challenge due to their inherent differences. This article introduces a rigorous mathematical approach to align a 360° image with its corresponding 3D model generated from images with known camera poses followed by texture projection on the model. We use Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) feature descriptors enhanced with a homography-based metric to establish correspondences between the faces of a cubemap and the posed images. To achieve optimal alignment, we use a non-linear least squares optimization technique with a custom objective function. Subsequently, the outcomes of the alignment process are evaluated through texturing using a customized raytracing algorithm. The resulting projections are compared against the original textures, with a comprehensive assessment of the alignment's fidelity and precision.

The annual demand for fibres continues to rise worldwide. Consequently, more and more fibres must be produced to meet this demand, most of which are melt-spun polymeric man-made fibres. Smooth filaments made of polymers are mainly used for technical applications in industry. For use in clothing or home textiles, for example, a texturing process is used to give the filaments a crimp and thus a feel like that of natural fibres. In this state, they can be processed together with natural fibres and used in textiles. Partially oriented yarns (POY) are of great importance in texturing. The yarns are mainly crimped with the help of the so-called false-twist texturing process (FTTP). Since POY accounts for about 60% of the melt-spun filament yarn produced worldwide, the FTTP is the most important texturing process in the textile industry. In this paper, the main components of false-twist texturing (FTT) machines are explained, along with the state of the art and research for each component and its influence on the process. Relevant patents are discussed, as well as process optimisation techniques, innovative polymers, and yarn types recently used in FTT, followed by a conclusion and an outlook for the process. Polyamide materials are widely used for medical device coating. However, despite the fragile area at the interface, these devices must conserve their physical and mechanical performance after the sterilization process. In this work, the impact of steam sterilization, widely used in the medical sector, on the adhesion properties of biocompatible and biosourced polyamide-11-coated copper substrates was assessed. The adhesion strength, a quantitative indicator of the coating performance, was assessed thanks to a laboratory-made bench test. The surface of metal substrates was microstructured with laser engraving to enhance the coating adhesion. The Ra roughness value was varied to verify if the depth of valleys induced with the femtosecond laser could favor the interfacial anchoring. Scanning electron microscopy analyses highlighted the physical surface evolution of the polymer analyzed at the interface, across the various texturing parameter values, Ra. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to monitor the bands specific to polyamide thermo-oxidative degradation. Elemental composition deduced from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy carried out on the coating after mechanical debonding clearly revealed that the chemical stability of the copper substrates was affected rather than the polyamide coating. Also, we discussed the impact of the chosen sterilization parameters (steam and pressure) on the formation of copper-based species detected with this technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The processes of strontium hexaferrite (permanent magnet material) fabrication in combustion reactions followed by heat treatment of organic nitrate precursors containing glycine or polyvinyl alcohol have been studied. The formation of iron-glycine complexes of organic precursor components affects the formation of the morphology of the obtained samples. When using glycine-containing systems during combustion, a branched fibrous texture of the material with extended internal cavities with elongated oxide particles emerges. Such samples have a higher coercivity; the external magnetic field has no significant influence on the texture formation during combustion. It was established that charges are generated in precursors during their combustion, which manifests itself in the appearance of a potential difference between the ground and the precursor. In this case, the appearance of lower intensity charges allows us to obtain samples with higher magnetization, as well as with a greater ability to increase the magnetic characteristics during further thermomagnetic processing.

This work investigates the impact of combining light trapping and radiative cooling on bifacial solar panels. While several techniques have been proposed to enhance the efficiency of solar panels, their combination can lead to suboptimal results. By numerically evaluating the light absorption and thermal balance of different panel configurations, we found that each side of the bifacial solar cell can be textured independently with a cross-effect of less than 4%. However, our results also indicate that improving visible light trapping can increase infrared absorption, leading to a heating effect that may offset the benefits of radiative cooling. These findings highlight the importance of balancing the factors that influence solar panel efficiency and provide quantitative insights that guide the development of more effective solar energy systems.

Over the past 20 years, in filament draw texturing, very few developments and innovations have been introduced into production machineries. The growing demand for energy efficiency, faster production rates and greater production flexibility have prompted our investigation into non-traditional approaches to improve yarn control during the texturing. Instead of aprons, small individually driven godets are a solution for high-speed manufacturing, yarn control and energy saving. The drawing godets, where the yarn can be considered an elastic coupling element between two consecutive godets, pose a new challenge for consistency in velocity control. Though some machinery manufacturers have introduced the godet system, the yarn quality produced by the godet system is not systematically evaluated and compared vis-à-vis the apron system. The current study prepared textured yarns in both apron and godet systems while maintaining the same texturing parameters. Differences in the yarn’s bulk, modulus, breaking elongation, tenacity and boiling water shrinkage were assessed and compared. Woven and knitted fabrics were prepared from textured yarns, and a comparative analysis of fabric properties was performed with respect to their tearing strength, air permeability, drape and dyeability. Better quality of yarn and fabrics can be prepared in the godet system, which is energy saving, of higher speed and requires low maintenance technology in comparison to the apron system.

The article offers information on innovations in filament draw texturing machinery to improve energy efficiency, production rates, and flexibility. This paper presents the results of research focused on increasing the lifespan of HPDC moulds for casting aluminium alloys by applying duplex PVD coatings in combination with laser texturing the base material before the coatings' deposition. This article describes the HPDC process and the degradation mechanisms of the moulds that arose during this process. The PVD nanostructured coatings utilised, the methods of their deposition, and the evaluation of their wear resistance are defined in this paper. The surface texturing process is described alongside the description of the analysis of the wear of the functional parts of the mould after decommissioning, which was carried out by visual inspection and optical and light microscopy. Three types of PVD duplex coatings were analysed during our study. The coatings were deposited using the LARC technology method (lateral rotating cathode). Subsequently, the procedure of laser texturing in the form of dimple textures using a laser was proposed. The quality of the coatings was evaluated under tribological conditions by means of the "Ball on disc" method. Based on the experimental results, recommendations for practice are established. In order to provide a theoretical reference for the future processing and product design of new plant-based meat analogues, the mechanisms influencing the formation of fibrous structures during high-moisture extrusion of plant proteins were described from three aspects: raw and auxiliary materials (vegetable protein, additives), extrusion system parameters(moisture addition, extrusion temperature, screw speed and feeding speed) and cooling die head. Protein intermolecular interactions are key to the formation of textured vegetable protein fiber structures, and different vegetable protein depends on different protein intermolecular interactions for their textured structures. Additives can change the mode and degree of intra- or intermolecular interaction of proteins, thus directly influencing the formation of the fiber structure of the finished textured vegetable protein. Extrusion parameters affect the textural properties of the product mainly by influencing the protein structure. The cooling die head facilitates the formation of anisotropic fiber structures.

The purpose of this study is to create micro-texture on the surface of various mold materials by ultrasonic-assisted grinding. The effects of materials properties (hardness and fracture toughness) on micro-periodic structure were investigated by performing ultrasonic-assisted grinding, in which ultrasonic vibration is assisted in the axial direction of the grinding wheel in surface plunge grinding. The results showed that periodic structures can be formed without plastic flow on the surface after machining only in the case of cemented carbide with high hardness and low toughness. Furthermore, by modeling the abrasive grain shape and arrangement of the general purpose diamond grinding wheel without special treatment used in the experiments, we attempted to simulate the grinding groove shape formed by a multi-grain grinding wheel when ultrasonic vibration is assisted. The periodic structure formed on the cemented carbide surface was compared with the simulation results, which were in good agreement in terms of the period of the sinusoidal wave and the width of the grinding groove, confirming the validity of this simulation method. From the above, basic knowledge about the machining mechanism of grinding groove in ultrasonic-assisted grinding was obtained.

In this study, we explore the potential of a blended material comprising CsPbI 3 : EuCl 3 perovskite and Gig-Lox TiO 2 , a unique transparent spongy material known for its multi-branched porous structure, for application in solar cells. The inclusion of EuCl 3 in CsPbI 3 serves to stabilize the photoactive γ -phase with a bandgap of 1.75 eV, making it suitable for solar energy conversion in tandem solar cells. Our study applies X-ray-based techniques to investigate the structural properties and interfacial behavior within this blended material, in comparison with a reference perovskite layer deposited on glass. In addition, Spectroscopic ellipsometry is complemented with density functional theory calculations and photoluminescence measurements to elucidate the absorption and radiative emission properties of the blend. Notably, our findings reveal a significant quenching of photoluminescence within the blended material, underscoring the pivotal role of the distributed interfaces in facilitating efficient carrier injection from the CsPbI 3 : EuCl 3 perovskite into the Gig-Lox TiO 2 sponge. These findings pave the way for the application of the blend as an Electron Transport Layer (ETL) in semi-transparent perovskite solar cells for tandem and building integrated photovoltaics. In order to simultaneously enhance the bending strength and fracture toughness of alumina, this research incorporated different amounts of alumina platelets into the ceramic slurry. Based on the shear force generated by the slurry flow during platform positioning, the platelets in the slurry were aligned. The green bodies were then sintered to prepare textured alumina. The results showed that the addition of 5 vol% alumina platelets in the slurry yielded the highest mechanical performance for the textured alumina. When the load was perpendicular to the printing direction, the bending strength and fracture toughness were measured to be 272 MPa and 4.41 MPam1/2, respectively, demonstrating an increase of 132 MPa and 1.25 MPam1/2 compared to non-textured alumina ceramics. Similarly, When the load was parallel to the printing direction, the bending strength and fracture toughness were 318 MPa and 3.4 MPam1/2, respectively, displaying improvements of 149 MPa and 0.65 MPam1/2 compared to non-textured alumina ceramics. The combination of ceramic mask stereolithography additive manufacturing technology and ceramic texturing techniques in alumina fabrication not only shortened the preparation cycle but also improved the bending strength and fracture toughness of alumina, thus expanding their potential applications. Abstract Preferred orientation in polycrystalline materials is one of the most challenging problems for structural analysis. Significant preferred orientation can severely affect the structure‐property analysis of the systems having substantial crystallographic anisotropy. Here, an extremely high degree of preferred orientation has been demonstrated in R‐block hollandite hexagonal PbFexV6−xO11 compounds, which has recently been shown to exhibit an unusual colossal electroresistance response that has a strong dependence on structural modifications. The present results warn against possible errors in understanding the evolution of the crystal structure of these hollandites, which might adversely affect the estimation of the influence of the same on their spectacular physical properties.

Surface modification of metallic alloys can create hydrophilic or hydrophobic surfaces that enhance the functional performance of the material. For example, hydrophilic surfaces have improved wettability, which improves mechanical anchorage in adhesive bonding operations. This wettability is directly related to the type of texture created on the surface and the roughness obtained after the surface modification process. This paper presents the use of abrasive water jetting as an optimal technology for the surface modification of metal alloys. A correct combination of high traverse speeds at low hydraulic pressures minimises the power of the water jet and allows for the removal of small layers of material. The erosive nature of the material removal mechanism creates a high surface roughness, which increases its surface activation. In this way, the influence of texturing with and without abrasive has been evaluated, reaching combinations where the absence of abrasive particles can produce surfaces of interest. In the results obtained, the influence of the most relevant texturing parameters between hydraulic pressure, traverse speed, abrasive flow and spacing has been determined. This has allowed a relationship to be established between these variables and surface quality in terms of Sa, Sz and Sk, as well as wettability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon fibre-reinforced polymers (CFRP), thanks to their properties such as lightness, resistance to corrosion and fatigue, are emerging composite materials in the aeronautic fields, guaranteeing to reduce weight and costs by maintaining high performances in terms of strength and security. For preventing fluid damage and freezing, in aeronautic applications, CFRP parts need to be coated by painting. However, the paint/coating adhesion on CFRP composites is generally poor and affected by surface conditions. In this work, femtosecond laser texturing was investigated as an approach to improve adhesion of superhydrophobic coatings (SHC) to CFRP substrates. The laser textured surfaces show, after coating, a more lasting superhydrophobic behaviour compared to the as received sample, even after several cleaning cycles, demonstrating that the laser pre-treatment is a reliable and green method to enhance the adhesion of the SHC to the composite substrate. The shaping of sliding surfaces of steel parts and friction pairs is a great potential for solving problems in the field of sliding pairs, such as: reduction of friction resistance, increase in lift, control of slotted flows, heat dissipation, and increasing the durability of friction pairs. The article presents tribological tests of a mapped sliding node based on selected vane pump components. The tests are carried out on the T-11 tribological tester (pin on disc) and are comparative in relation to standard elements. Surface changes in the tested friction nodes include the use of two additional machining processes, i.e., slide burnishing and texturing. The material for the samples is carbonitrided and heat-treated C22E steel, while the material for the counter-samples is E295 steel with a hardness of 160 HB (non-heat-treated). The use of addtional processes in the form of burnishing and texturing on the sliding surfaces significantly reduces the friction coefficient by about 15% and reduces the resistance to movement for the tested combination. Tribological tests are carried out in two variants, i.e., with a constant sliding speed and variable load as well as with constant load and variable sliding speed about 50%. The authors conduct a number of studies, the results of which can be found in this work, in particular, for applications for the co-operation of parts of injection pumps. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Laser texturing has been proven to be an effective method to improve the tribological behavior of titanium and its alloys, while the hardness of the textured surface is still poor. To further strengthen the surface, a two-step laser processing experiment was conducted on Ti6Al4V alloy including femtosecond laser texturing and in-situ nitriding. Firstly, the sample was textured with femtosecond pulses at laser fluence of 6.37 J/cm2 and a repetition rate of 200 kHz. Then, the textured surface was micro-melted and nitrided by irradiation in a nitrogen atmosphere at a low laser fluence of 0.43 J/cm2 and a high repetition rate of 19 MHz. After nitriding, a uniform crack-free TiN coating was prepared on the top of the as-textured structures with thickness of 40–60 μm, and the surface hardness was significantly improved from 336 HV to 1277 HV. The reinforced phase TiN had microstructures of dendrites in the upper region and particles in the bottom region of the nitrided layer. The morphology analysis revealed that only a slight change in height was introduced to the textured structures by femtosecond laser nitriding and the designed functions could be maintained.

Due to the hydrodynamic pressure effect, the bearing capacity of the oil film on the surface of a textured friction pair is greater than that of a smooth surface. In this paper, the effects of PTFE surface texture parameters (shape, depth, width, and area ratio) on the oil film bearing capacity and leakage of the sealing system under lubrication are studied using the FLURNT simulation. It is found in this present study that greater texture depths do not necessarily lead to better sealing performance. When the texture depth exceeds a certain level, a reverse flow occurs at the bottom of the texture, thereby weakening the hydrodynamic pressure effect. An optimal texture depth of 5–10 μm maximizes the oil film bearing capacity. Within a certain range, the oil film bearing capacity increases along with texture widths. In addition, leakage of the rectangular texture rises significantly with growing texture widths. Larger texture area ratios result in higher leakage, but the bearing capacity first rises and then falls with an increase in the area ratio, with a maximum value of 70–80%. Considering the influence of texture parameters on oil film bearing capacity and leakage, selecting the most appropriate texture parameters for surface texture treatment optimizes the performance of the sealing system. The findings of this paper provide a theoretical basis for improving the sealing performance of high-end aviation equipment using texture treatment, thereby enabling the application of surface texture technology to improve the tribological properties of materials.

[Display omitted] • The hierarchical random pyramid (HRP) PDMS film exhibited a transmission enhancement of 14% in the range of 300–800 nm. • The HRP PDMS film demonstrates light-trapping, with a 17% improvement for oblique incidence angles (50° to 80°) compared to flat PDMS film. • The HRP PDMS film exhibited an excellent hydrophobic self-cleaning effect and remarkable stability against abrasion and scratching tests. We developed a hierarchical random pyramid (HRP)-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film as an antireflective layer for metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). To create the HRP structure on the PDMS surface, we first patterned the Si surface using alkaline etching and Ag-assisted chemical etching (Ag-ACE) and then transferred the pattern onto the PDMS surface. The resulting PDMS exhibited hierarchical structures of inverted micro-pyramids with nano-scale surface features. The optical performance of the textured PDMS film was observed across the entire wavelength range of visible light (λ = 300–800 nm), attributed to the enhanced light-trapping effect resulting from the increased fractal dimensions (D f) of the hierarchical nanostructures. Under optimal conditions, an average reflectance of 3.13 % was observed, along with a 14 % improvement in transmittance compared to that of the reference. Finite difference time-domain simulations were used to investigate the origins of these optical enhancements, conclusively linking them to the HRP structures. The optimized structures also showed superhydrophobicity with a contact angle (θ CA) of approximately 155.2°. When applied to PSCs (MAPbI 3), the optimized textured PDMS film led to a 12 % increase in short-circuit current density (J sc) from approximately 23.1 to 25.98 mA/cm2. Furthermore, the power conversion efficiency of the MAPbI 3 p-i-n structured devices was enhanced by 18.21 %, representing a 13 % improvement. Our results confirm that the HRP-PDMS film enhances superhydrophobicity and light trapping, while mitigating the transmittance loss due to changes in the incident angle. SrFBiS2 is a quaternary n-type semiconductor with rock-salt-type BiS2 and fluorite-type SrF layers alternately stacked along the c axis. The tunability of the crystal and electronic structures as well as the intrinsically low thermal conductivity make this compound a promising parent material for thermoelectric applications. In the current work, we show that alloying of Se and S in SrFBiS2 reduces the optical band gap with the second conduction band serving as an electron-transport medium, simultaneously increasing the electron concentration and effective mass. In addition, the raw material Bi2Se3 is shown to act as liquid adjuvant during the annealing process, favoring preferred-orientation grain growth and forming strengthen microstructural texturing in bulk samples after hot-pressed sintering. Highly ordered lamellar grains are stacked perpendicular to the pressure direction, leading to enhanced mobility along this direction. The synthetic effect results in a maximum power factor of 5.58 μW cm−1 K−2 at 523 K for SrFBiSSe and a peak zT = 0.34 at 773 K, enhancements of 180% compared with those of pristine SrFBiS2.

The influence of the Nd:YAG laser's oscillation energy on creating textured surfaces on silicon wafers is investigated in this study. The silicon wafer surfaces were directly ablated by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser beam to create the texturing, which was then examined using UV–Vis spectroscopy, AFM and FESEM to determine its characteristics. The reflectance was reduced up to 15% after laser texturing of multicrystalline silicon wafers. The silicon surface suffers from structural defects and a laser damage layer as a result of the laser texturing process, which in turn has an effect on the lifespan of the photo-generated carriers. To compensate for the laser damage layer, the silicon surface was cleaned with diluted KOH (15%) to remove undesirable particles and the oxide layer. Surface roughness and reflectance in silicon solar cells were changed depending on the laser oscillation energy utilized for texturing. The roughness and reflectance were measured using AFM and UV–Vis, respectively. The laser oscillation energy of 84 J/p had the highest average roughness of 0.2104 m and the lowest reflectance of 5%. As a result, standard silicon solar cell devices revealed photovoltaic conversion efficiencies of roughly 7.5% and 5.0% for laser-textured grid and one-dimensional line patterns, respectively.

Surface friction in metal forming processes can be reduced by creating lubricant reservoirs at the interface between surfaces in contact, and a laser texturing process can be employed to produce the micro-dimples that act as the reservoirs on the surfaces. However, the role of the laser texturing parameters in the friction reduction of tool steel surfaces has still received very little attention. Therefore, this study aims to reduce the friction of the AISI D2 tool steel surface on which a nanosecond pulse laser was applied to create an array of micro-lubricant pockets for trapping lubricant. The effects of laser power, irradiation duration, and spacing distance between pockets on the pocket diameter, size of the heat-affected zone, surface friction, and wettability were investigated in this work. The average laser power in the range from 5 to 10 W and laser irradiation duration of 0.02 to 0.10 s were applied. The results showed that the increase in laser power and irradiation duration enlarged the pocket diameter and heat-affected zone. The largest pocket diameter of 40 µm was achievable by using 10 W laser power together with 0.10 s irradiation time. The pin-on-disc method was employed to determine the friction coefficient of the tool steel, where JIS SPFC 980Y advanced high-strength steel was used as a disc. The friction coefficient of laser-textured with different spacing distances of 150, 200, and 250 µm versus untextured surfaces was compared and found to vary depending on the applied normal load. The laser-textured surface having a pocket spacing distance of 150 µm and pocket density of 5.6%, offered the lowest friction coefficient of 0.097 on average for all tested loads, whereas the average friction coefficient of the untextured surface was 0.117. In addition, the wettability of textured surfaces was insignificantly changed compared to that of untextured ones, so the micro-lubricant pockets did not cause oleophobicity affecting the performance of lubrication. Well-defined micro-pockets using the most appropriate laser parameters, i.e., 10 W laser power with 0.10 s irradiation duration and 150 µm spacing distance, successfully reduced the sliding friction of contacting couples between the laser-textured tool steel and advanced high-strength steel surfaces. The low surface friction induced by the laser-fabricated micro-lubricant pockets has been feasible for the forming tool and die applications where the energy consumed in their operations can be minimized. The global RE100 campaign is attracting attention worldwide due to climate change caused by global warming, increasingly highlighting the efficiency of renewable energy. Texturing of photovoltaic devices increases the devices' efficiency by reducing light reflectance at their surfaces. This study introduces the change in light reflectance following the process conditions of plasma etching as a texturing process to increase the efficiency of photovoltaic cells. Isotropic etching was induced through plasma using SF6 gas, and the etch profile was modulated by adding O2 gas to reduce light reflectance. A high etch rate produces high surface roughness, which results in low surface reflectance properties. The inverse moth-eye structure was implemented using a square PR pattern arranged diagonally and showed the minimum reflectance in visible light at a tip spacing of 1 μm. Preferred orientation in polycrystalline materials is one of the most challenging problems for structural analysis. Significant preferred orientation can severely affect the structure‐property analysis of the systems having substantial crystallographic anisotropy. Here, an extremely high degree of preferred orientation has been demonstrated in R‐block hollandite hexagonal PbFexV6−xO11 compounds, which has recently been shown to exhibit an unusual colossal electroresistance response that has a strong dependence on structural modifications. The present results warn against possible errors in understanding the evolution of the crystal structure of these hollandites, which might adversely affect the estimation of the influence of the same on their spectacular physical properties. Abstract The first step in the fabrication of SHJ (silicon heterojunction) solar cells is forming random pyramids on the Si wafer surfaces. The pyramid profile would affect the following amorphous silicon deposition. Two CP (chemical polishing) solutions consist of HNO3 + HF and O3 + HF, respectively, are used to modify the pyramid profile. It is found that these two solutions have selective rounding effects on the pyramid profiles. The first one rounds the pyramid valleys and the second one rounds the pyramid peaks. The combination of the two CP methods improves the passivation quality of amorphous silicon and promotes the conversion efficiency of SHJ cells.

Pb(Zr 0.5 Ti 0.5)O 3 (PZT) powders were synthesized from needle-like TiZrO 4 (TZO) precursors by topochemical molten salt synthesis. The effects of the flux types, the raw powder sizes and the synthesis temperatures on the resultant particle morphologies and phase structures of both TZO and PZT were investigated. Via optimizing the synthesis conditions, needle-like TZO with a smooth surface and needle-like PZT with a rough surface were obtained. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses unveiled that TZO possesses a single-crystal structure with the axial direction along the [010] crystallographic orientation, while PZT exhibits a polycrystalline structure with a discernible degree of misorientation. Notably, the synthesized needle-like PZT from TZO were observed to be unstable and could not induce oriented grain growth of Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3)O 3 -PbZrO 3 -PbTiO 3 (PMN-PZT) ceramics. This work reports the progress in the preparation of superconducting and thermoelectric lamellar compounds processed by the unconventional Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). The SPS equipment was modified with the aim of obtaining the textured and dense superconductor Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10,p-type oxide thermoelectric bulk as Ca3Co4O9 and Ca3-xAgxCo4O9/Ag composites respectively. The new process is referred to as Spark Plasma Texturing (SPT). During SPT, the bulk material can freely deform. As a result, inter-grain preferential crystallographic orientation is created. The series of sintered and textured samples using the same Ag content were processed respectively. From the results, we can evidence: (i) the magnetic and/or structural transition around 350 °C, for both series of samples. (ii) The electrical resistivity (ρ) decreases with increasing Ag-substituted or Ag-added. (iii) The Seebeck coefficient (S) of the textured series is higher than that of the sintered series. In the case of the Ag-substituted, S, decreases with Ag content. The optimized composite is found to be Ca2.6Ag0.4Co4O9/8wt% Ag. We can note the remarkable reduction of ρ, and the improvement of power factor values up to 360 μW.m−1.K−2.The superconducting properties of single phased Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi2223) consolidated using SPS and SPT will also be discussed.

This work investigates properties of PEDOT:PSS on flexible black silicon (bSi) for a hybrid solar cell on textured polyimide (PI) substrate. The flexible bSi is formed by thinning down crystalline silicon (cSi) wafers to 65 μm thickness, followed by fabrication of bSi nanowires (NWs) on the wafer surface using one-step metal-catalyzed electroless etching (MCEE) technique. The resulting bSi NWs exhibit an average diameter of around 90–100 nm and length of 900 nm. Then, PEDOT:PSS with a thickness of 150 nm is coated on the flexible cSi and bSi NWs. For texturing of PI, copper-seeding technique is used. The planar and textured PI substrates are then attached to the back of the flexible cSi and bSi. The PEDOT:PSS/flexible bSi on PI substrate shows lower broadband reflection when compared to PEDOT:PSS/flexible cSi. This is due to the presence of bSi NWs on wafer surface which leads to refractive index grading effect. The PEDOT:PSS/flexible bSi solar cell on the textured PI substrate demonstrates conversion efficiency of 2.58%. This is contributed by the increased short-circuit current density (Jsc) in the device (when compared to the device on planar PI), owing to the enhanced light absorption above wavelength of 800 nm.

Piezoelectric materials enable the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice-versa. Ultrahigh piezoelectricity has been only observed in single crystals. Realization of piezoelectric ceramics with longitudinal piezoelectric constant (d33) close to 2000 pC N-1, which combines single crystal-like high properties and ceramic-like cost effectiveness, large-scale manufacturing, and machinability will be a milestone in advancement of piezoelectric ceramic materials. Here, guided by phenomenological models and phase-field simulations that provide conditions for flattening the energy landscape of polarization, a synergistic design strategy is demonstrated that exploits compositionally driven local structural heterogeneity and microstructural grain orientation/texturing to provide record piezoelectricity in ceramics. This strategy is demonstrated on [001]PC-textured and Eu3+-doped Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) ceramics that exhibit the highest piezoelectric coefficient (small-signal d33 of up to 1950 pC N-1 and large-signal d33* of ≈2100 pm V-1) among all the reported piezoelectric ceramics. Extensive characterization conducted using high-resolution microscopy and diffraction techniques in conjunction with the computational models reveals the underlying mechanisms governing the piezoelectric performance. Further, the impact of losses on the electromechanical coupling is identified, which plays major role in suppressing the percentage of piezoelectricity enhancement, and the fundamental understanding of loss in this study sheds light on further enhancement of piezoelectricity. An analysis of the specific mechanisms of the influence of the state of the grain structure on the thermoelectric properties (electrical resistivity and total thermal conductivity) of the compound Bi1.9Gd0.1Te3 is presented. The formative predictables of the microstructure of metal-matrix composites, obtained using spark plasma sintering and consisting of polycrystalline thermoelectric bismuth telluride Bi2Te3 (composite matrix) and a ferromagnetic filler (Ni or Fe), were examined. It was determined that, in the course of spark plasma sintering, filler inclusions in the form of locally gradient inclusions of the nucleus–shell type (Ni@NiTe2 and Fe@FeTe2) are formed and randomly distributed in the Bi2Te3 textured matrix. As an intensification process of the unit operation of vegetable oil extraction, the cooking pre-treatment systematically results in damaging thermal degradations. However, recently, two thermomechanical expansion processes have been suggested and applied at industrial scales to pre-treat oilseeds: expansion and instant controlled pressure drop DIC. In both cases, it is a flash transformation from high-temperature/high-pressure to 100 °C/atmospheric pressure and 33 °C/vacuum phases, respectively. The use of DIC resulted in cumulative impact yields of 247 mg oil/g db, compared to 210, 230, and 224 for cracking, cracking/blocking, and expanding, respectively. To achieve the same yields obtained in 160 min for cracked or cracked/flaked soybean, the expander took 120 min against 35 min for DIC. Besides, thanks to the short heat treatment and the induced instant cooling, DIC allowed the highest preservation of soybean oil quality, with fatty acid concentrations almost identical to that of untreated seeds. Practical impacts: In the sector of the vegetal oil industry, researchers and engineers mostly look for increasing the extraction yields while preserving or improving the sensorial and biochemical quality of the oil. Henceforth, the modification of the oleaginous seed texture may usually be the major factor affecting and normally enhancing the capacity of extraction. Based on the improvement of material structure through adequate expansion, the higher the volume of vapor issued from the autovaporization throughout the instant controlled pressure-drop (DIC) technology, the higher the oil yields. Moreover, using the instantaneous thermodynamic theory, the feasibility of integrating DIC technology as an HTST treatment in the industrial-scale soybean extraction process could be performed and optimized without any biochemical degradation.

The creation of superhydrophobic surfaces (SHS) has received exceptional thought from the entire research community due to its notable application in varied fields such as anti-icing, self-cleaning, drag reduction, anti-bacterial, and oil-water separation. The super­hy­drophobic (SH) conditions for a surface can be attained through the consolidation of a low surface energy surface with appropriate micro/nano-surface roughness through texturing. Motivated by the SH nature of lotus leaf and petal effect, microstructures have been prepared in this work on a metal surface by a fiber laser marking machine at 35 W. The textured surfaces with a different pitch to diameter (p/d) ratio (2.0-0.70) have been turned into hydrophobic and finally SH, after storing in an ambient environment for a few days due to oxide layer deposition on the textured surface. In this study, the maximum contact angle achieved by textured geometry after 30 days of auto-oxidation was 158.6 o. Further, test results showed that the fabricated surfaces have a high potential to maintain their SH nature even after the harsh condition of applications.

Femtosecond Laser Induced Surface Structures evolve from ripples to spikes upon the increase of the energy dose Φ. Nevertheless, for a fixed Φ, several process parameters (pulse energy, repetition rate, average power, overlapping, etc.) play an important role in determining the resulting morphology. Here we show that the beam intensity profile Î as well has an important bearing on the structures morphology evolution. In the case of a Gaussian beam, Î has been modified by varying the beam size d. We observed that for a stationary beam, and for a Φ value, passing from d = 13 µm to d = 200 µm makes possible the transition from ripples to spikes. This transition is made energetically advantageous by using a Top Hat profile. Compared to a 200 µm wide Gaussian beam, a 62 µm wide Top Hat reduces by 10 the Φ required to yield a similar surface morphology (coexistence of spikes and micro-groves). Confirming these results over a large surface could further validate the shaping of Î as a key approach to both fully exploit the output power of state of the art, kW class, femtosecond laser whilst increasing the surface texturing throughput.

In the process of machine and machinery operation, it is inevitable to face problems such as friction and wear. At present, there are many solutions to solve the problem of friction and wear. As an effective method, surface texture technology has been widely concerned by scholars in China and abroad. In recent years, surface texture technology has made great achievements in the research of friction pair surface, which is of great significance to improve the surface tribological properties. In this paper, the background and development of surface texture are analyzed, and the research purpose and development status are pointed out. The friction mechanism of surface texture is summarized, and the reason of the mechanism is explained. The optimization of morphology and parameters was discussed, and the range of optimal parameters was obtained. Then the surface texture preparation technology is summarized, and the advantages and disadvantages of the main methods are summarized one by one. Then, the less studied composite texture and the synergistic effect of texture technology and other surface technologies are briefly introduced. The effect of composite texture on tribological properties depends on the type of texture combination, and the synergistic effect with other technologies can effectively improve the shortcomings of single technology, which is worthy of further study. Finally, the above aspects of the full text are summarized, and the problems faced in all aspects are put forward. Na(Nb 1-x Sb x)O 3 [N(N 1-x S x)] templates were fabricated to texture the 0.96(Na 0.5 K 0.5)(Nb 1-y Sb y)O 3 -0.01BaZrO 3 -0.03(Bi 0.5 Ag 0.5)ZrO 3 [KN(N 1-y S y)-BZ-BAZ] piezoceramics along the [001] direction. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that fabricated these templates. Thus far, NaNbO 3 (NN) templates have been utilized to texture KNN-modified piezoceramics; however, they produce many holes in the piezoceramics because of the dissolution of the NN templates during sintering. N(N 0.9 S 0.1) templates with an average size of ∼18 μm were produced by the molten-salt and topochemical methods utilizing Bi 2.5 Na 3.5 (Nb 0.9 Sb 0.1) 5 O 18 precursors. Due to their high melting temperature, the N(N 0.9 S 0.1) templates did not dissolve during sintering. Therefore, no holes were present in the KN(N 0.95 S 0.05)-BZ-BAZ piezoceramic textured using the N(N 0.9 S 0.1) templates. The piezoceramic textured using the N(N 0.9 S 0.1) templates showed a large hardness (7.56 ± 0.26 GPa) and an elastic modulus (154 ± 5 GPa) similar to those of the untextured piezoceramic. However, the piezoceramic textured using the NN templates showed reduced hardness (5.94 ± 0.58 GPa) and elastic modulus (127 ± 14 GPa) because of the presence of the holes. The KN(N 0.95 S 0.05)-BZ-BAZ piezoceramics textured using the N(N 0.9 S 0.1) templates provided large d 33 (740 pC/N) and k p (0.62) values. Cantilever-type piezoelectric energy harvesters (CPEHs) were produced using the KN(N 0.95 S 0.05)-BZ-BAZ piezoceramic textured with N(N 1-x S x) templates and the CPEH produced using the piezoceramic textured by N(N 0.9 S 0.1) templates generated the largest power of 2.92 mW. Therefore, N(N 0.9 S 0.1) is a promising template for the [001] texturing of KNN-based piezoceramics with good mechanical properties. Abstract Hip joint replacements represent the most effective way of treatment for patients suffering from joint diseases. Despite the rapid improvement of implant materials over the last few decades, limited longevity associated with wear-related complications persists as the main drawback. Therefore, improved tribological performance is required in order to extend the service life of replacements. The effect of surface texturing of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular cup was investigated in the present study. Unique tilling method was utilized for manufacturing the dimples with controlled diameter and depths on the contact surface of the cup. The experiments with four commercial femoral components and two model lubricants were realized. The main attention was paid to a coefficient of friction considering the differences between the original and the dimpled cups. Results showed remarkable lowering of friction, in general. Focusing on the simulated human synovial fluid, friction was reduced by 40% (alumina ceramic), 38.8% (zirconia toughened ceramic), 25.5% (metal), and 9.9% (oxinium). In addition, the dimples helped to keep the friction stable without fluctuations. To conclude, the paper brings a new insight into frictional behaviour of the hip replacements during running-in phase which is essential for overall implant lifespan. It is believed that proper surface texturing may rapidly improve the life quality of millions of patients and may lead to considerable financial savings.

Foil bearings have excellent characteristics such as a high damping performance and acceptable dimensional changes caused by installation errors and thermal expansion. However, the problem of large friction losses also occurs at the top foil under the high rotational speed required to support a shaft without any contact. In this paper, a new type of foil bearing with a surface texture on the top foil is proposed. The effects of the texture were verified by the rotational motion experimental analysis under a high circumferential speed and dry lubrication. For a bearing with dimples on the contact area, the effect of friction reduction could be observed under boundary lubrication. Moreover, it was also confirmed that the dimples adversely affected the air film formation with the sliding speed increase. For a newly designed F-grooved model, the phenomenon of an early transition from boundary lubrication to fluid lubrication can be seen. However, the friction coefficient increases at the boundary lubrication. In this study, it was also the highest friction reduction effect was confirmed at the maximum sliding speed. Furthermore, an additional friction reduction effect and a small temperature rise were obtained by combining the above textures.

Bioceramics are a great alternative to use in implants due to their excellent biocompatibility and good mechanical properties. Depending on their composition, bioceramics can be classified into bioinert and bioactive, which relate to their interaction with the surrounding living tissue. Surface morphology also has great influence on the implant biological behavior. Controlled texturing can improve osseointegration and reduce biofilm formation. Among the techniques to produce nano- and micropatterns, laser texturing has shown promising results due to its excellent accuracy and reproducibility. In this work, the use of laser techniques to improve surface morphology of biomaterials is reviewed, focusing on the application of direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) technique in bioceramics.
