As a proposed mediator between stigma-related stressors and negative mental health outcomes, HIV-related shame has been predictive of increased rates of substance use and difficulties adhering to antiretroviral treatment among people with HIV. These downstream manifestations have ultimately impeded progress toward national goals to End the HIV Epidemic, in part due to limited success of conventional psychotherapies in addressing HIV-related shame. In a pilot clinical trial (N = 12), receipt of psilocybin-assisted group therapy was associated with a large pre-post decrease in HIV-related shame as measured by the HIV and Abuse Related Shame Inventory, with a median (IQR) change of - 5.5 (- 6.5, - 3.5) points from baseline to 3-months follow-up (Z = - 2.6, p = 0.009, r = - 0.75). A paradoxical exacerbation of sexual abuse-related shame experienced by two participants following receipt of psilocybin raises critical questions regarding the use of psilocybin therapy among patients with trauma. These preliminary findings carry potential significance for the future of HIV care.

ObjectiveTransgender and gender diverse (TGD) people experience higher levels of stigma, discrimination, and interpersonal violence due to their gender identity and/or expression, particularly TGD people with a migration background. This study aimed to conduct and evaluate group psychotherapy for TGD migrants to provide opportunities for exploring and developing interpersonal skills and relationships.MethodThe group therapy included five individuals who identified as TGD and originated from the Middle East. The TGD group therapy consisted of 12 weekly sessions of 90 minutes each and was facilitated by a psychiatrist. All sessions were conducted online and in Turkish. The sessions were guided by the group process and discussions.ResultsAfter completing 12 group therapy sessions, members of the group reported benefiting from observing and emulating others who shared their problem constellation. Through the interpersonal skills that they built up throughout the sessions, they became more open to share their feelings experiencing fewer social barriers, and reduced anxiety.ConclusionThis observational study indicates the significance of offering group-based psychotherapy to enhance affirmation and social connection within gender minority groups and emphasizes the need to empirically evaluate the effectiveness of group psychotherapy with TGD individuals, with special attention to the unique needs of TGD migrants.

Background: Limited research into binge eating disorder (BED), a low treatment rate, and a lack of treatment rights, reflects a marginalized disorder in society and a treatment context. Aim: The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the psychopathology of BED, by exploring the patients' meanings related to the disorder and the role of the body in the treatment of BED. Method: Qualitative methodology using a reflexive thematic analysis. The data material is based on semi-structured in-depth interviews with six cis-gendered women who had previously completed an inpatient treatment program for BED at a department for EDs and met the criteria for 307.51 Binge Eating Disorder in DSM-5. Results: The qualitative analysis rendered two meta-themes comprising six themes and 12 subthemes. The initial meta-theme was "Relational challenges and feelings could not be talked about at home." The secondary meta-theme was "Body contempt disturbs the experience of self and others" and the third was "Their body has not been a theme in previous treatment." This categorization depicts a narrative of the disorder in terms of development, current condition, and experiences with prior treatment. Discussion: The findings indicate that shame and disgust are central to playing pivotal roles in the embodiment of BED, highlighting the significance of addressing one's relationship with their body for achieving recovery and preventing an experienced repetition of the perceived rejection as a child. Background: Older adults under‐report cybercrime, despite being more likely than younger people to experience repeat victimisation, financial loss and more severe emotional consequences. Considering vulnerabilities more common in old age, we sought to identify, and consider ways to address, barriers that older people experience when reporting cybercrime to statutory agencies with a role in reporting. Methods: From community groups, police and victim support, and health and social care organisations, we purposively invited people aged 60+ who had experienced cybercrime (n = 16), their supporting family members (n = 2) and professional stakeholders (n = 15) to participate in semistructured in‐person or virtual interviews and conducted a reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Across 33 interviews, we identified four themes: (1) Shame and fear of repercussion; (2) Reporting unhelpful to emotional and financial recovery; (3) Lack of knowledge of scams and sources of support; and (4) Social support makes a difference. Conclusions: Digital ageism, evidenced by structural barriers, stigma and disempowerment experienced by older adults deciding whether to report cybercrime, warrants attention from the FJN and authorities. Mindfulness plays an important role in reducing post‐traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and promoting posttraumatic growth (PTG) among traumatized populations. However, the mechanism at the emotional level has not been fully examined. Thus, we aimed to investigate the possible mediating roles of trauma‐related shame and guilt. A total of 814 college students (Mage = 19.55, SD = 1.89) with traumatic experiences in China were recruited. Traumatic experiences, mindfulness, trauma‐related shame, and trauma‐related guilt were assessed in the first survey. Six months later, PTSS and PTG were assessed in the second survey. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis indicated that mindfulness was associated with less PTSS through shame and guilt. However, though directly associated with more PTG, mindfulness could also negatively predict PTG by evoking less guilt. Mindfulness can be a way to cope with traumatic experiences and related psychological consequences. However, although mindfulness can reduce PTSS by suppressing negative trauma‐related shame and guilt, it can also limit the realization of PTG by inhibiting the adaptive sides of these emotions. Background: Evidence on how persons with and in remission from an eating disorder experience their oral health is limited. Dental treatment in Sweden today is often postponed until medical rehabilitation has been completed, but this carries risks. For the patient, the risk is severely impaired oral health and additional suffering, and for both society and the patient, higher costs than might have been necessary. Methods: Ten female informants aged 21–51 years (mean age = 36.7, standard deviation 12.7) in remission from an eating disorder with a median duration of 12.5 (range 4–25) years of illness, were questioned in semi-structured interviews about their perceptions of oral health. All participants had been referred to a specialist dental clinic and needed oral rehabilitation. 10% of the patients had been diagnosed with anorexia nervosa and 90% with bulimia nervosa. All had been in remission from the eating disorder for at least one year. Transcripts of the interviews were analyzed with thematic analysis using an inductive approach. Results: One overarching theme emerged from the analysis: dental damage persisted as a visible, lingering scar during remission of the eating disorder, reminiscent of the disease and its consequences. The three major themes identified were (1) Physical impact, (2) Psychological impact, and (3) Impact on daily living. The first major theme included erosive tooth wear and impaired oral function and aesthetics. Interviewees described the second as feelings of stigma, guilt, shame, anxiety, and worry, in particular concerning self-inflicted dental damage through self-induced vomiting. The last major theme covered avoidance strategies such as limiting smiling and laughing and minimizing social situations such as eating with others, pursuing a wanted career, and meeting a partner. Conclusions: The participants in this study expressed a profound negative impact on daily life and a two-fold burden of stigma of having suffered from both an eating disorder and poor oral health. Plain English summary: Research has established a link between eating disorders and poor oral health, such as erosive tooth wear. One knowledge gap, however, is how patients with and after recovery from an eating disorder experience their oral health. Background: Weight stigma is the social devaluation and denigration of individuals because of their excess body weight, resulting in poorer physical and mental health and healthcare avoidance. Attribution Theory and Goffman's theory of spoiled identity provided a general overarching framework for understanding weight stigma experiences. Objective: Our purpose was to explore weight stigma experiences from a broad range of perspectives emphasizing identities typically excluded in the weight stigma literature. Design: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study with data drawn from 73 substantive narrative comments from participants who responded to a larger survey. Results: Analysis developed five themes: Working on weight, Not being overweight, Lack of help and empathy, Exposure and embarrassment and Positive experiences. Individuals who would be clinically assessed as overweight, especially men, often did not identify with having a weight problem and found the framing of personal responsibility for weight empowering. Participants with larger body sizes more often attributed embarrassment and shame about weight to treatment in the clinical setting. Older participants were more likely to have positive experiences. Conclusions: The findings suggest ongoing tension between the framing of weight as a personal responsibility as opposed to a multifactorial condition with many uncontrollable aspects. Gender, age and body size shaped respondent perspectives, with some young male respondents finding empowerment through perceived personal control of weight. The healthcare system perpetuates weight stigma through lack of adequate equipment and excessively weight‐centric medical counselling. Recommending a healthy lifestyle to patients without support or personalized medical assessment may perpetuate weight stigma and associated detrimental health outcomes. Since the 1980s, biblical scholars have started to employ the framework of "honor and shame" to study the culture of the ancient Mediterranean region. However, this application of the social–scientific honor–shame model has led to "massive generalizations of 'honor' and 'shame'". In particular, when focusing on the concept of honor/shame rather than its lexemes, the social–scientific school ignores the nuanced nature of each Greek word group related to shame. By studying classical Greek literature, Douglas Cairns further points out a puzzling situation that the word group αἰδώς contains polarized meanings of both "to shame" and "to respect". In this paper, we examine the puzzling double meanings of "to shame/to respect" by focusing on the use of the word group ἐντροπή in the letters of Ignatius of Antioch. This paper argues that the word group ἐντροπὴ serves a rhetorical purpose of protecting the church's identity by rejecting beliefs/customs that are unacceptable to Christianity and promoting unity in the churches through obedience to church authorities. This paper also explores the fundamental epistemological issue of understanding emotion words in its ancient context. It provides a provisional definition for ἐντροπή, that it is a self-inhibitory emotion of sensitivity to one's proper place in social interaction to protect one's self-image. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the case of Min Joshua Chung, an ordained pastor who was found guilty of sexual misconduct but has since been restored to ministry within the Presbyterian Church in America. The author examines the concept of holiness and how it has been misused to perpetuate patterns of sexual and spiritual abuse, particularly within Asian American Christian communities. The article argues that the theological justifications used to forgive and restore Chung's power while silencing and marginalizing the victim-survivors are deeply flawed and rooted in heteropatriarchal norms. The stigma associated with functional neurological disorder (FND) is greater than that associated with other neurological conditions, seriously affecting the quality of life of patients and increasing the burden on caregivers. This article reviews the concept, the current situation and harms, the influence factors and intervention strategies of FND stigma. Background: Stigma is a complex construct and its association with help-seeking among those experiencing eating disorders is not well understood. Rates of help-seeking are low for those with eating disorder symptoms and, therefore, determining the role of stigma and shame in this relationship is needed to help inform effective awareness campaigns aimed at improving prognostic outcomes. The current study examined the associations between perceived stigma, self-stigma, shame, and help-seeking behaviour in a community sample of individuals with elevated eating disorder symptoms. Methods: Participants completed an online survey that included measures of stigma and shame as perceived barriers to help-seeking for individuals with eating disorders. Those with elevated eating disorder symptoms and high clinical impairment were included in the study (N = 333). Results: Using binary logistic regression models controlling for age and gender, results showed that perceived stigma, self-stigma, and shame predicted 64% of help-seeking behaviour (p =.005). The only significant unique predictor of formal help-seeking was "Being concerned that other people believe eating disorders are not real illnesses". No other stigma or shame items were found to significantly predict help-seeking. Conclusions: The present findings suggest that while stigma plays an important role in help-seeking, it might not be the primary reason preventing individuals with eating disorders from accessing care. The field is encouraged to investigate these factors to promote help-seeking effectively. Mencius' concept of shame has emerged as a space of comparison between shame cultures in the East and West in cross-cultural research. However, comparative research on shame in Buddhist and Confucian cultures is scarce. Hence, this study examines the Buddhist psychological Shame concepts of "hrī" (Can 慚, shame) and "apatrāpya" (Kui 愧, abashment) and the Confucian "xiuwuzhixin" (羞惡之心, the mind of shame) as representative examples that reveal a subject boundary that restricts shame to human beings and explores the similar subject-subordinate structures of these concepts. The study then analyzes the internal and external forces that induce shame. Finally, it discusses the goodness ascribed to shame and how deviation from shame leads to evil. Results reveal fundamental differences in the understanding of shame between the two cultures. In particular, "hrī" and "apatrāpya" in Buddhism are rooted in the psychological consciousness function, whereas "xiuwuzhixin" in Confucian culture is rooted in the ethics function. Abstract Young adults with ASD experience shame in social interactions, and if poorly mishandled, it may interfere with their attempts to participate in their social environment. One strategy to reduce shame is cognitive reappraisal, yet the efficacy of this strategy was not examined in ASD. Here, we investigated the effect of reappraisal in reducing feelings of shame in ASD and the thematic contents used. Young adults with high-functioning ASD and typical participants were shown shame-arousing pictures. They imagined themselves as the primary character in each scenario and rated their feelings of shame. Then, they were trained to reappraise shame-arousing pictures less negatively. Finally, they viewed other shame-arousing photos, reappraised them, stated aloud their new interpretations, and rated their feelings. We found lower shame ratings in participants with ASD than in typical participants. In addition, we found a similar reduction in shame ratings after reappraising these pictures in both groups. Qualitative analysis revealed that participants with ASD used fewer positive narratives and more neutral and unrealistic descriptions than their typical peers. These findings highlight shame-regulation abilities in individuals with ASD while pointing to their unique narratives. We recommend that clinical interventions in ASD emphasize generating positive reappraisals of social situations.

This paper corrects a historical injustice that has been perpetrated against Kant for some time now. Mostly on good grounds, Kantian ethics has been accused of neglecting the role played by the emotions in moral deliberation and in morally informed action. However, the contemporary moral philosophers who have put forth such a claim tend to bypass textual sources, on the one hand, and to downplay the role played by the anthropological writings on Kant’s practical philosophy as a whole, on the other. Relying on highly relevant pre-critical texts in which Kant sketches future argumentative patterns and discusses the role of a negative emotion like shame on the improvement of the human species, I address a mistaken conclusion about Kantian ethics as a whole that is common in contemporary Anglo-American philosophy. I also raise paradoxical conclusions that follow from Kant’s argument, once its implicit premises have been brought to light. I conclude that Kant did indeed think seriously about a so-called ‘shame-instinct’, however much his central ideas diverge from contemporary readings of the emotion, and fall short of fulfilling the ultimate target one can assume his insights would be drawing at

يحاول البحث دراسة ملامح الكتابة بالجسد في كتابات المرأة، وبخاصة أن هذه الكتابات شكلت رؤية جديدة مغايرة للكتابة في حد ذاتها، لما تتمتع به كتابتهن من وعي عميق بالجسد، ومع ازدياد كتابات المرأة التي تعلن عن جرأتها في التعامل مع الجسد وفضح المسكوت عنه والإفصاح عن العالم الداخلي، مما يحمل تحولًا وتغيرًا في التعبير عن هويتها الأنثوية، نابعًا من رفضها لأن تقف عاجزة تكتفي بقراءة ما تنتجه الكتابات عنها إلى أن تتولى زمام العملية الإبداعية، لتعبر عن وعي عميق بخصوصيتها في الإبداع الأدبي. وقد اختار البحث دراسة الأعمال الروائية للكاتبة الجزائرية فضيلة الفاروق؛ لما تميزت به تجربتها الروائية من احتفاء بتيمة الجسد وكيفية إبرازه بصورة مغايرة، تحمل الجمع بين نظرة المجتمع الذكوري في التعامل مع الجسد وبين جرأتها في التعبير والانتقال من الجسد حسيا إلى الجسد كنص، وقد حاول البحث الإجابة على مجموعة من التساؤلات، أهمها : كيف استطاعت الأعمال الروائية التعامل مع الجسد والكشف عن الهوية الأنثوية، وكيف استطاعت العبور من الوعي العميق بالجسد الأنثوي إلى كتابة الجسد نصًا، وقد اقتضى ذلك التعامل مع آليات المنهج التحليلي الوصفي، مع الاتجاه صوب النقد الثقافي؛ رغبة في فضح الصورة الذهنية الثابتة في الموروث الثقافي، وانتهى البحث إلى مجموعة من النتائج، لعل من أهمها: جرأة النصوص الروائية في التعبير عن الجسد، بصورة أخرجته من الصورة الثقافية التي عاشت داخل الموروث المجتمعي، وعدم حصره في كونه رمزا للعار أو أداة للشهوة ، بل التعامل معه كجزء من الهوية الأنثوية، التي لا يمكن حصرها في أطر أو قيود، بحكم كونها أنثى.Abstract The research attempts to study the features of writing with the body in women’s writings, especially since these writings formed a new vision different from writing itself, due to their writing’s deep awareness of the body, and with the increase in women’s writings declaring their boldness in dealing with the body, exposing what is kept secret and disclosing The inner world, which carries a transformation and change in the expression of her feminine identity, stemming from her refusal to stand helpless and content herself with reading what writings produce about her until she takes control of the creative process to express a deep awareness of its specificity in literary creativity, the current research chose to study the novels of the Algerian writer Fadela Al-Farouq. Because her novelistic experience was distinguished by her celebration of the theme of the body and how to highlight it in a different way, it carries the combination of the male society’s view of dealing with the body and its boldness in expression and the transition from the body sensually to the body as text. The research attempted to answer a set of questions, the most important of which are:How were fictional works able to deal with the body and reveal female identity, and how were they able to cross from deep awareness of the female body to writing the body in text? This required dealing with the descriptive analytical approach, and the research ended with a set of results, perhaps the most important of which is: the boldness of fictional texts in expression. About the body, in a way that removed it from the cultural image that lived within the societal heritage, and not limiting it to being a symbol of shame or a tool of lust, but rather treating it as part of the feminine identity, which cannot be confined to frameworks or restrictions, by virtue of being female.

Young peopleʼs access to credit has increased over recent decades in line with financial deregulation and the digitalization of loan provision. This calls for a research approach that takes contextual features into consideration. Inspired by a life-course perspective and based on interviews with young people and debt advisors in Norway, we propose that ways both into and out of youth debt may be conceived as contextualized biographical processes. We suggest that ways into debt are characterized by three types of contextual factors: obligations, temptations, and expectations, while ways out are marked by three stages; realizing, sharing, and waiting. In addition, youth debt appears to be related to classed shame associated with financial mismanagement, and to normative and gendered milestones in transitions to adulthood.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (cPTSD) are debilitating psychiatric conditions associated with disability and morbidity; historically, PTSD has been conceptualized as a fear-based anxiety disorder. More recently, it has been found that other negative emotions are also primary in PTSD/cPTSD. Shame is a diagnostic component of cPTSD and is known to be positively associated with PTSD. Thus, PTSD with shame and cPTSD are reviewed together in this article. Two reviews were conducted an umbrella review of previous reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses of the relationship between PTSD/cPTSD and shame as well as a research update. The umbrella review was comprised four reviews and the research update 10 articles published after the last review, Shi et al. The findings indicate a strong relationship between PTSD/cPTSD and shame. Further trauma-related shame has a role in the development of PTSD/cPTSD and trait-based shame has a role in the maintenance of PTSD/cPTSD. The findings and limitations of this review are discussed.

The article is devoted to revealing the cross-cultural specificity of the emotion of vicarious shame on the example of the German concept fremdschämen/fremdscham and the Anglo-Saxon spanish shame. The study aims to identify those cultural factors that led to the most noticeable differences in the conceptual structures of emotion concepts of Ger. fremdschämen/fremdscham and A.-S. spanish shame. To meet this objective, a three-stage methodology was developed, which was based on the use of interdisciplinary research tools (traditional linguistics, cognitive and corpus linguistics), as well as the involvement of data from psychology, anthropology, and sociology. Strengthening the cross-cultural analysis with the empirical data of language corpora made it possible to reveal divergences in the conceptual structures of the concepts of A.-S. shame and Ger. scham, which are the base for such derivatives as spanish shame and fremdschämen/fremdscham. A selection of the most relevant English lemmas Eng. shame and Germ. Scham is performed on the basis of two frequency indicators – (1) the combinability of these lemmas (Freq.) and (2) the typicality (regularity) of this combinability (logDice/MI-index). On the conceptual level Freq. is an indicator of the relevance of a concept in a certain linguistic community, and logDice/ MI-index are indicators of the collocational strength, i.e. the invariability of the compatibility of this concept with other concepts. The proposed methodology made it possible to reveal divergences in the conceptual structures of the concepts of A.-S. shame and Ger. scham, which are the base for such derivatives as spanish shame and fremdschämen/fremdscham. It was established that these differences led to different approaches to the cross-cultural transfer of the Spanish “foreign” (vicarious) shame, represented by the emotion concept of vergüenza ajena, to German and Anglo-Saxon culture. Divergences were established against the background of two criteria for dividing cultures: “cultures of shame – cultures of guilt” and “individualism – collectivism” because these criteria are closely correlated with concepts representing the emotion of shame and its varieties. A certain correlation of the concepts of A.-S. shame and Ger. scham with the level of individualism in the respective cultures has been established, since a higher individualism index in Anglo-Saxons and a lower one in Germans somewhat influenced the external sanctioning of shame. In the Anglo-Saxon culture, a high index of individualism determined the greater privacy of shame, which brought the concept of shame closer in terms of sanctioning to guilt. Therefore, in the English-speaking environment, the connection between the concepts of shame and guilt is of significant relevance, which emphasizes that the Anglo-Saxons belong to the “guilt culture”. However, the shame that an individual empathically experiences in a situation of shameful acts or the shameful behaviour of a stranger is not private, since it is based solely on external sanctioning. Therefore, “foreign” (vicarious) shame, to some extent, does not agree with the “individualistic” nature of Anglo-Saxon shame. This divergence between shame and vicarious shame led to the establishment of the association of “foreign” (vicarious) shame with the Spaniards in the English-speaking environment. As a result, the emotion concept of spanish shame was formed. But among the Germans, who also belong to the “guilt culture”, shame is not private but public, i.e., it has a distinctive external sanctioning. This means that, unlike shame and spanish shame, German concepts of scham and fremdschämen/fremdscham are entirely consistent in terms of sanctioning. Therefore, in the German linguo-society, ethnic and socio-cultural restrictions did not arise during the transfer of the Spanish concept vergüenza ajena.

Introduction: Alcohol-involved sexual assault (AISA) survivors who were drinking at the time of the assault may be at risk of internalizing victim-blaming myths and stigma. Cognitive-behavioral models posit the link between AISA and negative emotional outcomes may be explained through maladaptive appraisals and coping - i.e., characterological and behavioral self-blame, shame, low self-compassion (i.e., high self-coldness, low self-caring), and fear of selfcompassion. Methods: Using a cross-sectional design and community sample of younger adults (N = 409 Canadians, M = 28.2 years old, 51.3% women), we examined these mechanisms' unique effects in mediating the associations between AISA and posttraumatic stress, general anxiety, and depressive symptoms, respectively. Results: In terms of gender differences, AISA was more common, self-coldness higher, and general anxiety symptoms more frequent in women, and fear of self-compassion was higher in men. Using structural equation modeling that controlled for gender and the overlap between outcomes, shame emerged as the strongest mediator linking AISA with all emotional outcomes. Fear of selfcompassion also partially mediated the AISA-posttraumatic stress symptom association, self-coldness partially mediated the AISA-general anxiety symptom association, and characterological self-blame fully mediated the AISA-depressive symptom association. Conclusion: Avoidance-based processes, ruminative/worry-based cognitions, and negative self-evaluative cognitions may be distinctly relevant for AISArelated posttraumatic stress, general anxiety, and depressive symptoms, respectively, after accounting for the overarching mediation through shame. These internalized stigma-related mechanisms may be useful to prioritize in treatment to potentially reduce AISA-related negative emotional outcomes, particularly for AISA survivors with posttraumatic stress, general anxiety, and/or depressive symptoms. Background: Problematic anger, characterized by excessive frequency, intensity, and duration of anger which causes substantial emotional distress and functional interference, poses a marked challenge in military populations. Despite its importance, research on this topic is limited. This study contributes to the literature by exploring problematic anger in a large sample of Norwegian military personnel who served in NATO missions in Afghanistan. Methods: All Norwegian military personnel who deployed to Afghanistan between 2001 and 2020 were sent a link to a cross-sectional web-based survey by the Joint Medical Services of the Norwegian Armed Forces in 2020. A total of 6205 individuals (response rate: 67.7%) participated. The cross-sectional survey assessed problematic anger, mental and physical health, war zone stressor exposure, and quality of life. Results: Overall, 8.4% of participants reported problematic anger. Mental health disorders, deployment-related shame and guilt, chronic pain, and challenges with the military-to-civilian transition were independently associated with problematic anger. Both staying in service and maintaining a part-time connection with the military as a reservist mitigated the risk of problematic anger after deployment, compared to complete separation from military service. Conclusion: Findings demonstrate a sizeable prevalence of problematic anger among veterans of combat deployments. Given the associations between problematic anger and mental health disorders, chronic pain, and transition challenges, interventions designed to mitigate problematic anger need to be multi-faceted, including the possibility of maintaining an ongoing connection to military service. By reducing the risk of problematic anger, occupational, interpersonal and health outcomes may be improved for service members. Background: Approximately 15% of women in low-and middle-income countries experience common perinatal mental disorders. Yet, many women, even if diagnosed with mental health conditions, are untreated due to poor quality care, limited accessibility, limited knowledge, and stigma. This paper describes how mental health-related stigma influences pregnant women's decisions not to disclose their conditions and to seek treatment in Vietnam, all of which exacerbate inequitable access to maternal mental healthcare. Methods: A mixed-method realist study was conducted, comprising 22 in-depth interviews, four focus group discussions (total participants n = 44), and a self-administered questionnaire completed by 639 pregnant women. A parallel convergent model for mixed methods analysis was employed. Data were analyzed using the realist logic of analysis, an iterative process aimed at refining identified theories. Survey data underwent analysis using SPSS 22 and descriptive analysis. Qualitative data were analyzed using configurations of context, mechanisms, and outcomes to elucidate causal links and provide explanations for complexity. Results: Nearly half of pregnant women (43.5%) would try to hide their mental health issues and 38.3% avoid having help from a mental health professional, highlighting the substantial extent of stigma affecting health-seeking and accessing care. Four key areas highlight the role of stigma in maternal mental health: fear and stigmatizing language contribute to the concealment of mental illness, rendering it unnoticed; unconsciousness, normalization, and low literacy of maternal mental health; shame, household structure and gender roles during pregnancy; and the interplay of regulations, referral pathways, and access to mental health support services further compounds the challenges. Conclusion: Addressing mental health-related stigma could influence the decision of disclosure and health-seeking behaviors, which could in turn improve responsiveness of the local health system to the needs of pregnant women with mental health needs, by offering prompt attention, a wide range of choices, and improved communication. Potential interventions to decrease stigma and improve access to mental healthcare for pregnant women in Vietnam should target structural and organizational levels and may include improvements in screening and referrals for perinatal mental care screening, thus preventing complications. The mechanism of moral disengagement allows individuals to lessen feelings of guilt or shame stemming from immoral actions. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of local research on the functioning of moral disengagement mechanisms within the framework of social psychology and morality in Malaysia. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between moral identity and moral emotions, and whether they are associated with moral disengagement in the context of moral misconduct. The study targets UKM students who are pursuing their studies and residing in the residential colleges at UKM, Bangi. The research was conducted using a quantitative approach, with data collected through a questionnaire that included one demographic section and three sections examining different variables. A total of 200 UKM students from various backgrounds participated in the study and responded to the questionnaire. Most respondents were undergraduate students, with the majority being around 22 years old. The survey data were analyzed empirically using SPSS software. The findings revealed a positive relationship between the level of moral identity and moral disengagement. Additionally, there was a positive relationship between moral emotions and moral disengagement among UKM students. The results of this study can serve as a guide to understanding the relationship between moral identity, moral emotions, and moral disengagement. Given the lack of research on aspects of morality such as moral disengagement, these findings are particularly valuable. The conclusion of the study discusses and suggests several intervention steps that can be taken to raise awareness about the implications of moral disengagement, thereby preventing moral misconduct among students and the broader community. Background: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) comprises a group of rare types of genodermatoses characterized by extreme mucocutaneous fragility, leading to blistering and/or erosions, even with minimal trauma. Continuous care through wound management is an integral part of daily life for the families and individuals affected. The aim of this study was to assess the social reality and impacts on families of having minor members diagnosed with EB in Spain. Methods: A qualitative methodology was employed, utilizing four focus groups entailing participation by 24 parents (19 mothers and five fathers) of minors diagnosed with EB in Spain. Results: Negative impacts on the family nucleus were evident in four priority areas of analysis: sociorelational, economic‐labour, physical and psychoemotional, with significant differences observed based on the severity of the symptoms. Conclusion: Impacts on the family nucleus are noticeable from birth, influencing all other daily life routines and complicating family planning and organization. There is an imperative need to enhance the availability of sociohealth resources and to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to address their biopsychosocial needs. Background: A greater experience of "social safeness" in social relationships has been associated with reduced general psychopathology. This association appears to be independent of the perceived level of actual social support. The tripartite model of emotion suggests that experiences of social safeness may be associated with increased activation of the 'soothing system', inhibiting the experience of threat and shame. Associations of eating disorder (ED) pathology and shame have been well established. This study aims to answer the questions: Is there an association with experience of social safeness and ED symptoms in a non-clinical sample? Are any associations independent of perceived or received social support? Methods: A non-clinical sample of 80 young adults (aged 18–25) completed an online survey. The survey included measures of ED symptoms, social safeness, perceived and received social support and shame. Correlation and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to explore cross-sectional associations between variables. Results: Increased sense of social safeness was strongly correlated with reduced ED symptoms. Social safeness explained unique variance in ED symptoms independent of received and perceived social support. Shame and ED symptoms were positively correlated, while shame and safeness were negatively correlated. Conclusions: This study presents evidence of an association between the experience of social safeness and ED symptoms. The impact of the emotional experience of social safeness appears independent of current social support, and may be associated with increased activation of the soothing system, and reduced activation of the threat system and experiences of shame, as in the tripartite model of EDs. Further research could explore these associations in clinical populations and explore whether reduced social safeness is a risk factor for the development / maintenance of EDs, or could be a useful target for ED interventions. Background: Mental health problems, such as depression, have a high prevalence in young people. However, the majority of youths suffering from depression do not seek professional help. This study aimed to compare help-seeking behavior, intentions and perceived barriers between youthswith different levels of depressive symptoms. Methods: This cross-sectional study is part of a large-scale, multi-center project. Participants were n = 9509 youths who were recruited in German schools and completed a baseline screening questionnaire. Based on their depressive symptoms, youths were allocated to the following three subgroups: (a) without depressive symptoms, (b) with subclinical symptoms, (c) with clinical symptoms (measured by PHQ-A). Quantitative analyses compared previous help-seeking behavior, help-seeking intentions and perceived barriers (Barriers questionnaire) between these subgroups. An additional exploratory qualitative content analysis examined text answers on other perceived barriers to help-seeking. Results: Participants were mostly female (n = 5575, 58.6%) and 12 to 24 years old (M = 15.09, SD 2.37). Participants with different levels of depressive symptoms differed significantly in help-seeking behavior, intentions and perceived barriers. Specifically, participants with clinical depressive symptoms reported more previous help-seeking, but lower intentions to seek help compared to participants without symptoms (all p < 0.05). Participants with subclinical depressive symptoms reported a similar frequency of previous help-seeking, but higher intentions to seek help compared to participants without symptoms (all p < 0.05). Perception of barriers was different across subgroups: participants with clinical and subclinical depressive symptoms perceived the majority of barriers such as stigma, difficulties in accessibility, and family-related barriers as more relevant than participants without depressive symptoms. Across all subgroups, participants frequently mentioned intrapersonal reasons, a high need for autonomy, and a lack of mental health literacy as barriers to help-seeking. Conclusions: Youths with higher levels of depressive symptoms are more reluctant to seek professional help and perceive higher barriers. This underlines the need for effective and low-threshold interventions to tackle barriers, increase help-seeking, and lower depressive symptoms in adolescents and young adults differing in depression severity. Objective To explore the impact of perceived HIV-related discrimination on antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among middle-aged and elderly individuals living with HIV/AIDS and the modifying effect of social support, so as to provide guidance for improving ART treatment success rates. Methods By using cluster random sampling method, a questionnaire survey was conducted among middle-aged and elderly HIV/AIDS patients in the city of Mianyang. The survey assessed their sociodemographic characteristics, social support, perceived discrimination, and treatment adherence. Logistic regression models were used to analyze the relationship between these factors and ART adherence. Results The study included 401 middle-aged and elderly HIV/AIDS patients receiving ART. Good adherence was observed in 69.82% of participants, while 30.18% had poor adherence. Univariate analysis revealed that patients with effective viral suppression (viral load ≤20) demonstrated better adherence compared to treatment failure patients (viral load >20). Adherence was also higher among those following single or dual antiretroviral drug regimens. Logistic regression results indicated that fear of disclosure (OR=1.116, 95% CI: 1.023–1.217), public discrimination (OR=1.105, 95% CI: 1.008–1.211), and internal shame (OR=1.119, 95% CI: 1.022–1.225) significantly influenced treatment adherence. Stratified analysis further revealed that fear of disclosure (OR=1.159, 95% CI: 1.034–1.299), public discrimination (OR=1.128, 95% CI: 1.004–1.267), and internal shame (OR=1.150, 95% CI: 1.021–1.297) were associated with adherence. Conclusion Enhancing social support, particularly at the individual and family levels, is crucial to mitigate the impact of fear of disclosure, public discrimination, internal shame, and treatment regimens on HIV/AIDS treatment adherence. Introduction: It has been suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic was a potentially traumatic occurrence that may have induced generalized anxiety and discomfort, particularly in susceptible populations like individuals with mental illnesses. The therapeutic approach known as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) has been shown to be successful in helping patients process traumatic events and restore wellbeing. Nevertheless, little is known about the precise processes through which EMDR fosters symptom recovery. Methods: In order to disentangle these issues, we conducted a randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier NCT06110702) with 107 participants who were selected from university hospitals as a sample of investigation. Random assignments were applied to the participants in order to assign them to the experimental and control groups. The experimental group, but not the control group, underwent an 8-week EMDR intervention. Body perception, disgust, and emotions of guilt and shame, as well as mental contamination and posttraumatic and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, were investigated before and after the EMDR intervention. Results: The EMDR intervention was able to improve all of the variables investigated. Path analysis showed that body perception was able to predict both disgust and emotions of guilt and shame. Disgust was able to predict both mental contamination and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, while guilt and shame were able to predict post-traumatic symptoms. Conclusions: EMDR is an effective therapy for the treatment of post-traumatic and obsessive symptoms that acts through the promotion of improvement of the emotions of guilt/shame and disgust, respectively. Background: Period poverty is a significant issue that impacts the physical and psychological well-being of menstruators worldwide which can further contribute to poor mental health outcomes. For menstruators living in refugee camps, access to menstrual hygiene products is often limited or non-existent, leading to increased anxiety, shame, and embarrassment. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of the period poverty and to comprehensively analyze the association between period poverty, reusing menstrual products, and depressive symptoms among menstruators living in refugee camps in Jordan. Methods: A cross-sectional study surveyed refugee menstruators living in camps in Jordan, aged post-menarche to pre-menopause. Data collection included socio-demographics, menstrual practices, and depressive symptoms using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Period poverty was assessed through affordability and frequency of struggles with menstrual products. Chi-squared test, independent sample t-test, One Way Analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Post hoc, and logistic regression models were used in the analysis. Results: The study included a diverse sample of 386 refugee menstruators living in camps in Jordan (mean age 32.43 ± 9.95, age range 13–55). Period poverty was highly prevalent, with 42.0% reporting monthly struggles to afford menstrual products, and 71.5% reusing menstrual products. Univariate analysis revealed that experiencing period poverty was significantly associated with a younger age of marriage, increased number of children, lower education level, lower mother and father education levels, unemployment, decreased monthly income, absence of health insurance, lower reuse need score, and increased PHQ-9 score (p < 0.05). Menstruators experiencing monthly period poverty were 2.224 times more likely to report moderate to severe depression compared to those without period poverty (95% CI 1.069–4.631, P = 0.033). Conclusion: This study highlights a significant association between period poverty and depressive symptoms among refugee menstruators in living in camps in Jordan, as high rates of period poverty were associated with a 2.2-fold increased likelihood of reporting moderate to severe depression. Chemsex is the interplay of substance use by men who have sex with men (MSM) in sexual contexts. The minority stress model and the identity process theory are explanatory models. In this study, we investigated whether (i) differences in certain psychosocial aspects (i.e., shame, aspects of queer identity, and sexual self-concepts) exist between chemsex users and non-users, and (ii) which factors influence an awareness of negative impacts in chemsex users. We conducted an anonymous, cross-sectional, online survey, including sociodemography, sexual history, history of substance use, validated scales for shame-proneness, aspects of queer identity, and sexual self-concepts. Our analysis comprised descriptive statistics, t-tests, Spearman's correlations, and a multiple linear regression model. We recorded a total of 3257 datasets with 107 chemsex users. Chemsex users showed higher rates for risky sexual behavior. Values for shame proneness, more negative aspects of queer identity, and sexual self-concepts were elevated in chemsex users with an awareness of negative impacts. Sexual anxiety, intravenous substance use, and having had a difficult process coming out were significant predictors of feeling negative impacts. Aspects of shame, queer identity aspects, and sexual self-concepts play an important role in the field of chemsex. Different explanatory models seem to be relevant for different subgroups of chemsex users. Chemsex users with an awareness of a problem were particularly vulnerable and distressed but had the highest motivation for change. Prevention, counseling, and care might profit from the inclusion of these aspects. Further anti-stigma campaigns and a specialization of the healthcare system are needed. Background: In the past, cosmetic surgery was performed to return the function and normal shape of a body part. But today, cosmetic surgery has lost its main function. The present research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of schema therapy on self-compassion, body shame, and intolerance of uncertainty in women applying for cosmetic surgery. Methods: The current research was applied and semi-experimental with a pretest-posttest design with a control group. The statistical population of this research was all women who were referred to cosmetic clinics for cosmetic surgery in Tehran City, Iran, in 2023, and 30 people were selected by the convenience sampling method and randomly divided into an intervention group and a control group. Data were collected using the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS), Objectified Body Consciousness Scale (OBC), and Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS). Schema therapy intervention was performed during 8 sessions of 120 minutes once a week for the experimental group and the data were analyzed by multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) in SPSS software. Results: A statistically significant increase in self-compassion (F = 239.454) and reductions in body shame (F = 555.477) and uncertainty intolerance (F = 301.050) were observed in the experimental group after schema therapy (P < 0.001). Previous research has shown that moral emotions interact with self-control and unstructured socializing in explaining rule-breaking behavior. High levels of moral emotions appear to weaken the effects of both self-control and unstructured socializing, in explaining rule-breaking behavior. The current study examined whether these interactions also affect rule-breaking behavior that is explicitly committed with friends. In addition, three operationalizations of moral emotions were distinguished. Data were collected from N = 169 adolescents (54% female; mean = 14.95 years; SD = 1.7) using a self-report questionnaire battery. Results indicate that high levels of anticipated emotions in moral conflicts (AEMC) attenuate the effect of low self-control on one's own rule-breaking behavior. In contrast, high levels of both guilt- and shame-proneness enhanced the effect of unstructured socializing on one's own and rule-breaking with friends. Background: Mental illness stigma is often common among mentally ill patients. This stigma can come from others or the patients themselves, which is called 'self-stigma'. The present study explored the widespread impacts of self-stigma on adult patients with depression. Additionally, this review compared the severity of self-stigma levels among psychiatric disorders and to review and update thoughts about self-stigma of depression. Methods: An etiology and risk systematic review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) approach as a guideline. The search process was performed via research databases including MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL. The inclusion criteria are studies include participants diagnosed with depressive disorders, both genders, participants' exposure to mental illness self-stigma, participants' experience of self-stigma consequences and any geographical site or clinical settings are included, the type of the included studies must be observational studies. The included studies were limited to the English language studies that were published from 2016 and onwards. Patients with depression under the age of eighteen and patients diagnosed with multiple mental illnesses were excluded. The JBI critical appraisal checklist were adopted to assess the risk of bias. Results: In December 2022, a comprehensive search yielded eight cross-sectional studies that were included in this systematic review, involving a total of 783 patients diagnosed with depression, and 28 studies were excluded for not fulfilling the inclusion criteria of the review. The findings were extracted and synthesized through textual narrative synthesis into three main categories negatively affected by self-stigma of depression. These are: (1) the impact on the quality of life, (2) the impact on self-esteem and (3) the impact on self-worth. Moreover, in regard to the comparison of self-stigma levels among psychiatric disorders, self-stigma for people with schizophrenia was higher than self-stigma of depression. Conclusion: Self-stigma of depression has negatively impacted multiple aspects of the patient's life. Thus, the review brings the following recommendations: increase community awareness, educate the healthcare providers, include the topic of mental illness stigma in academic curriculums. Introduction: To examine the scope of existing literature on the conceptualization, use, and outcomes associated with compassion in the care of youth with childhood-onset disabilities. Methods: A protocol was developed based on the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) scoping review method. MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and EBSCOhost CINAHL, were searched. Results: Eight studies were selected for inclusion; four used quantitative methodology, and four used qualitative methods. Compassion was not defined a priori or a posteriori in any of the included studies. The concept of selfcompassion was explicitly defined only for parents of youth with childhoodonset disabilities in three studies a priori. The most reported outcome measure was self-compassion in parents of youth with childhood-onset disabilities. Self-compassion among parents was associated with greater quality of life and resiliency and lower stress, depression, shame and guilt. Discussion: There is limited evidence on the conceptualization, use, and outcomes associated with compassion among youth with childhood-onset disabilities. Self-compassion may be an effective internal coping process among parents of youth with childhood-onset disabilities. Introduction: Sexual harassment is a significant problem in workplaces all over the world. Women’s reactions to sexual harassment are influenced by various factors. The aim of the current study was to investigate how women respond sexual harassment in the retail clothing industry. Methods: In-depth face-to-face interviews were conducted with 16 women aged 23–44 years (mean 29.18 years) employed for at least 3 years in clothes shops in Shiraz, Iran. A grounded theory approach was used to analysis the data and raise hypotheses. Results: The main perpetrators of sexual harassment for female saleswomen were male customers. The women experienced conflict-induced stimulation (core phenomenon) when they were faced with sexual harassing behaviors (causal conditions). Such stimulation prompted three types of coping strategies: silence, avoidance, or confrontation. Intervening factors like the characteristics of the Iranian society (including family mores, state-imposed hijab regulations, patriarchal culture, educational system, and regulatory monitoring) and contextual factors (including individual and environmental factors and particularly employer expectations) were found to influence the selection of strategies used as well as their potential consequences in challenging situations. Conclusion: The current study used a grounded theory approach to produce an explanatory storyline that can be tested. Sexual harassment induces conflict-induced stimulation and responses are influenced by intervening conditions, contextual factors, selected strategies, and the perceived consequences of the response. The findings of the grounded theory study suggest that there are negative consequences, particularly in terms of lack of employer support and losing one’s job, shame, and family disapproval which act as barriers for female saleswomen to counteracting sexual harassment from male customers. Background: Psychological distress affects the treatment and rehabilitation of patients with stroke, affects their long-term functional exercise and quality of life, and increases the risk of stroke recurrence and even death. This is a multidimensional and multi-level mental health problem and a dynamic process variable that shows a dynamic development trend with time. However, previous studies have been insufficient to deeply study the change mechanism of psychological distress, and there remains a lack of forward-looking longitudinal studies to analyze its change trajectory. This study aimed to investigate potential categories and how psychological distress changes over time and to examine conversion probability in these transformation processes. Methods: This prospective longitudinal mixed-method study investigated the potential categories and change trajectories of distress in patients with stroke. A total of 492 participants from three hospitals were recruited for quantitative analysis. Latent class analysis and latent transition analysis (LCA/LTA) were used to identify meaningful subgroups, transitions between those classes across time, and baseline demographic features that help predict and design tailored interventions. Discussion: A comprehensive understanding of the potential category and transformation processes of psychological distress over time, including the impact of the sense of demographic data on the role of shame and loneliness, can lead to the development of psychological distress treatment tailored to the unique needs of patients with stroke. Thus, this study can promote more effective and successful treatment outcomes, reduce the stigma surrounding disease issues among patients, and encourage them to use psychological consultation. This paper corrects a historical injustice that has been perpetrated against Kant for some time now. Mostly on good grounds, Kantian ethics has been accused of neglecting the role played by the emotions in moral deliberation and in morally informed action. However, the contemporary moral philosophers who have put forth such a claim tend to bypass textual sources, on the one hand, and to downplay the role played by the anthropological writings on Kant's practical philosophy as a whole, on the other. Relying on highly relevant pre-critical texts in which Kant sketches future argumentative patterns and discusses the role of a negative emotion like shame on the improvement of the human species, I address a mistaken conclusion about Kantian ethics as a whole that is common in contemporary Anglo-American philosophy. I also raise paradoxical conclusions that follow from Kant's argument, once its implicit premises have been brought to light. I conclude that Kant did indeed think seriously about a so-called 'shame-instinct', however much his central ideas diverge from contemporary readings of the emotion, and fall short of fulfilling the ultimate target one can assume his insights would be drawing at. Objective: Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) report to be especially prone to social emotions like shame and guilt. At the same time, these emotions seem to play an important role in BPD pathology. The present study aimed to deepen the knowledge about the processes behind shame and guilt in patients with BPD. Methods: Twenty patients with BPD and twenty healthy controls (HCs) took part in an experiment that induced shame and guilt by imagining scenarios during scanning using functional brain imaging. Participants also filled out self-report questionnaires and took part in diagnostic interviews. Results: BPD patients reported more proneness to guilt but not to shame than the HCs. There was no difference in the self-reported intensity rating of experimentally induced emotions between the groups. Between-group contrast of neural signals in the shame condition revealed a stronger activation of cingulate and fusiform gyrus for the BPD patients compared to the controls, and a more pronounced activation in the lingual gyrus and cuneus for the HCs. In the guilt condition, activation in the caudate nucleus, the fusiform gyrus, and the posterior cingulate cortex was stronger in BPD patients, while HC showed stronger activations in cuneus, lingual gyrus, and fronto-temporal regions. Conclusions: Differences in the neuro-functional processes between BPD patients and HC were found, even though the two groups did not differ in their self-report of subjective proneness to guilt and emotional intensity of shame and guilt during the experiment. While the HCs may be engaged more by the emotional scenarios themselves, the BPD patients may be more occupied with cognitive regulatory and self-referential processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Self-weighing is consistently associated with more effective weight control. However, patterns show that participants disengage from their weight control behaviors following weight gain. Women with BMIs in the overweight/obese range (N = 50) enrolled in a long-term behavioral weight loss program completed ecological momentary assessment (EMA) surveys immediately after their daily weigh-ins. Nightly EMA surveys and self-monitoring data through Fitbit measured their weight control behavior that day. On days when participants gained weight (vs. lost or maintained), they reported more negative mood, more guilt/shame, and lower confidence in weight control. Motivation following daily weight gain depended on participants' overall satisfaction with their weight loss so far: more satisfied participants had marginally higher, but less satisfied participants had marginally lower motivation in response to daily weight gain. Greater guilt/shame and lower motivation after the weigh-in predicted less effective weight control behavior that day (e.g., lower likelihood of calorie tracking, fewer minutes of physical activity). Results demonstrate that even small weight gain is distressing and demoralizing for women in BWL programs, which can lead to goal disengagement. These findings have implications for future BWL interventions, including the potential utility of just-in-time adaptive interventions to promote more adaptive responses in the moments after weigh-ins. This study explored the integration of guilt and shame experiences into the self-concept, focusing on how perceived future opportunities affect this process. The participants in Study 1 (N = 201) and Study 2 (N = 221) recalled experiences that elicited either guilt or shame and that they believed could occur again in the future (i.e., repeatable) or could not (i.e., non-repeatable). The results showed that when the participants viewed an event as repeatable, suggesting that future opportunities for change were possible, they were more likely to accept and integrate the experiences associated with guilt than with shame. This difference disappeared when the target event was non-repeatable, thereby providing no future opportunities for change. Study 2 further demonstrated the moderating role of future coping confidence in the relationship between the interaction effect of emotion type and event repeatability on self-integration. The motif of shame represents an interesting and hitherto neglected intersection in the discussion of the relationship between Nietzsche and Plato. The first part of the essay recapitulates the function of this motif in Nietzsche's culminating texts (mainly Zarathustra and Gay Science), while the second part focuses on the motif of shame in Plato's work, specifically the two extreme contexts of death (Apology, Crito) and love (Symposium). It turns out that for both authors, shame is a constitutive moral phenomenon that is thematized in relation to logos. Shame and logos thus stand in close and contrasting relation. Their tension is decisive for the life of the soul, for its upward movement (Plato) or gradation (Nietzsche). It is therefore not a simple subjugation of the "bad", irrational element by the "good", rational component of the soul that plays the central role but an interplay of irreducible, mutually demanding moments. The interpretation of their interplay has both historical and systematic importance—it sheds new light on the relationship between these seemingly opposing philosophers and contributes to answering the following question: what is there to be ashamed of? Objective: Obesity is a complex, chronic, relapsing disease that requires an individualised approach to treatment. However, weight stigma (WS) experienced in healthcare settings poses a significant barrier to achieving person‐centred care for obesity. Understanding the experiences of people living with obesity (PwO) can inform interventions to reduce WS and optimise patient outcomes. This study explores how patients with obesity perceive WS in general practice settings; its impact on their psychological well‐being and health behaviours, and the patients suggestions for mitigating it. Methods: In‐depth semistructured interviews were conducted with 11 PwO who had experienced WS in general practice settings in Ireland. The interviews were conducted online via Zoom between May and August 2023; interviews lasted between 31 and 63 min (M = 34.36 min). Interviews were audio‐recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using inductive reflexive thematic analysis. Results: Three overarching themes specific to participants' experience of WS in general practice were generated: (1) shame, blame and 'failure'; (2) eat less, move more—the go‐to treatment; (3) worthiness tied to compliance. A fourth theme: (4) the desire for a considered approach, outlines the participants' suggestions for reducing WS by improving the quality of patient–provider interactions in general practice. Conclusion: The findings call for a paradigm shift in the management of obesity in general practice: emphasising training for GPs in weight‐sensitive communication and promoting respectful, collaborative, and individualised care to reduce WS and improve outcomes for people with obesity. To explore men's views on the causes and consequences of two common sexual dysfunctions – erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation – and how this affects physical and mental health as well as social life and intimate or close relations. A qualitative design with semi-structured interviews using open-ended questions was employed. Individual interviews were conducted, audio recorded and transcribed, and a qualitative content analysis of the text was performed. Informants were recruited from an outpatient primary care clinic in Sweden that offers consultation about sexual health to primarily younger men, age 20 years and above. A total of 18 participants were included in the study, ten with erectile dysfunction and eight with premature ejaculation or both. Using the content analysis, different views and strategies of erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation were presented to illustrate a range of perceptions. The main theme emerged as 'Striving to understand and deal with the problem', which was divided into four categories: 'Reasons for seeking healthcare', 'Own perceptions/images about the problem and its cause', 'Experienced consequences on sex life' and 'Relationship qualities'. Participants experienced their problems in relation to a partner. Feelings of shame and fear of not being fit for desired sexual practices were common. They thought that underlying physical illness or previous sexual activities could have caused their problems. Decreased sexual desire and low self-esteem were seen as consequences, and participants wished for both medical treatment and counselling as support. Sexual dysfunction impairs general health and relationships with partners. While counselling is the basic treatment, those who are offered pharmaceutical treatment need follow-up concerning effectiveness and potential concerns. People with sexual dysfunction may have decreased quality of life and poorer somatic and mental health in general. People with sexual dysfunction may have few places to turn to in a traditional primary health care setting. The participants expressed concerns about their physical health, their relationships with partners and motivation for treatment. Men's visits to primary care for sexual dysfunction provides opportunities to talk about lifestyle and relationships and discover other illnesses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using Philippians 1:27–2:4 as an example, this article will explore the role of positionality in biblical studies. Although the process of reflecting on one's positionality is more prevalent in empirical-based research, one's positionality is also relevant in text-based research, such as in biblical studies. This article will demonstrate this by observing the following: first, how some analyses of the collectivistic cultural context of Philippians have been inappropriately influenced by certain implicit individualistic perspectives; and second, how an interpretive lens derived from my positionality as a scholar from an explicitly collectivistic culture is able to highlight a mostly ignored intrinsic correlation between social relations and virtue.
