The flow characteristics of methane and water in sedimentary layers are important factors that affect the beneficial exploitation of marine hydrates. To study the influencing factors of methane drive-off water processes in porous media, we constructed nonhomogeneous geometric models using MATLAB 2020a random distribution functions. We developed a mathematical model of gas–water two-phase flow based on the Navier–Stokes equation. The gas-driven water processes in porous media were described using the level-set method and solved through the finite element method. We investigated the effects of the nonhomogeneous structure of pore media, wettability, and repulsion rate on gas-driven water channeling. The nonhomogeneity of the pore medium is the most critical factor influencing the flow. The size of the throat within the hydrophilic environment determines the level of difficulty of gas-driven water flow. In regions with a high concentration of narrow passages, the formation of extensive air-locked areas is more likely, leading to a decrease in the efficiency of the flow channel. In the gas–water drive process, water saturation changes over time according to a negative exponential function relationship. The more hydrophilic the pore medium, the more difficult the gas-phase drive becomes, and this correlation is particularly noticeable at higher drive rates. The significant pressure differentials caused by the high drive-off velocities lead to quicker methane breakthroughs. Instantaneous flow rates at narrow throats can be up to two orders of magnitude higher than average. Additionally, there is a susceptibility to vortex flow in the area where the throat connects to the orifice. This study extensively investigates the influence of different pyrolysis temperatures and organic matter contents on the fluid flow and heat transfer properties in oil shale samples. Utilizing CT images to generate three-dimensional digital rock, coupled simulations of CO 2 flow and heat transfer were conducted, analyzing parameters such as velocity fields, permeability, temperature fields, average temperatures, and heat transfer coefficients. The results reveal that, for relatively homogeneous oil shale samples, the permeability exhibits a monotonous increase with rising pyrolysis temperature. While the effect of pyrolysis temperature on the distribution characteristics of velocity and temperature fields is minimal, it significantly impacts the heat transfer coefficients. Specifically, the heat transfer coefficients increase significantly in the direction perpendicular to the bedding plane, while they decrease or remain unchanged parallel to it. Additionally, the organic matter content significantly influences the fluid flow and heat transfer properties of shale samples. After undergoing heat treatment, the heterogeneity of pore structures in shale samples varies significantly, affecting the characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer. The influence of organic matter content and pyrolysis temperature on fluid flow and heat transfer in shale primarily stems from the effect of organic matter pyrolysis on the original pore structure. The development and connectivity of pore networks are closely related to the distribution characteristics of the original organic matter and are not directly correlated with the organic matter content. These findings provide essential theoretical guidance and technical support for the development and utilization of oil shale resources, while also offering valuable references and insights for future research. Micro‐continuum models are versatile and powerful approaches for simulating coupled processes in two‐scale porous systems. Initially oriented for modeling static single‐phase flow in microtomography images with sub‐voxel porosity, the concept has been extended over the years to multi‐phase flow, reactive transport, and poromechanics. This paper introduces an integrated micro‐continuum framework to model coupled processes in porous media. It reviews state‐of‐the‐art models and discusses applications in geosciences including Digital Rock Physics with sub‐voxel porosity, moving fluid‐solid interface at the pore‐scale due to geochemical reactions, fracture‐matrix interactions, and solid deformation. Finally, the paper discusses future developments in micro‐continuum models. The core pore structure of the target shale oil block was finely characterized using scanning electron microscopy， and a microscopic numerical model of the pore-scale core was constructed to elucidate the intrinsic mechanisms and the main controlling factors of spontaneous imbibition of fracturing fluid within the complex pore space of shale. On this basis， research was conducted on spontaneous imbibition within the fracture-matrix system. The Navier-Stokes （N-S） equations were coupled with the level-set method to track changes in the oil and water interface， thus clarifying the oil and water two-phase flow characteristics and evaluating the efficiency of spontaneous imbibition under the influence of the wettability， viscosity ratio of oil and water， and interfacial tension. The research results revealed that large and small intercommunicating pores in shale form intricate microscopic displacement units under capillary action. When the rock wettability presents a water-wet state， water preferentially infiltrates from the fracture into the smaller pores， expelling oil from larger pores into the fracture， and the produced range of crude oil within the matrix pores is wider， resulting in higher spontaneous imbibition efficiency. When the rock wettability turns oil-wet， crude oil within the small pores cannot be produced during spontaneous imbibition， while the water invades from larger pores， causing crude oil to be displaced from other large pores. This results in a lower spontaneous imbibition efficiency and a small range of crude oil produced in the matrix pores. The spontaneous imbibition in the initial phase is faster but gradually slows over time. Stronger water wettability of shale indicates a lower viscosity ratio of oil and water and higher interfacial tension， resulting in a wider range of crude oil produced within the matrix pores and a cumulative efficiency of spontaneous imbibition of more than 15%.

Summary: The effect of root hairs on water uptake remains controversial. In particular, the key root hair and soil parameters that determine their importance have been elusive.We grew maize plants (Zea mays) in microcosms and scanned them using synchrotron‐based X‐ray computed microtomography. By means of image‐based modelling, we investigated the parameters determining the effectiveness of root hairs in root water uptake. We explicitly accounted for rhizosphere features (e.g. root–soil contact and pore structure) and took root hair shrinkage of dehydrated root hairs into consideration.Our model suggests that > 85% of the variance in root water uptake is explained by the hair‐induced increase in root–soil contact. In dry soil conditions, root hair shrinkage reduces the impact of hairs substantially.We conclude that the effectiveness of root hairs on root water uptake is determined by the hair‐induced increase in root–soil contact and root hair shrinkage. Although the latter clearly reduces the effect of hairs on water uptake, our model still indicated facilitation of water uptake by root hairs at soil matric potentials from −1 to −0.1 MPa. Carbonate gas reservoirs with edge and bottom water contain abundant reserves, making them key production targets in the Tarim Basin, Sichuan Basin, Ordos Basin, and other petroleum provinces. Water invasion may occur in the middle and late development stages of such reservoirs, leading to reduction of gas displacement efficiency and gas recovery. In this paper, a pore-scale water-gas immiscible flow model is established by coupling the fluid flow equation and the gas-water contact (GWC) tracking equation. The process of gas displacement with water is simulated in the heterogeneous porous media generated by the quartet structure generation set (QSGS). Finally, the mechanisms of remaining gas distribution and formation are analyzed, and the variation mechanism of microscopic gas displacement efficiency is discussed. The results are obtained in three aspects. First, the remaining gas is distributed at the blind end, in the pore-throat and as clusters, with their proportions and scales jointly controlled by microscopic pore structures, wettability and capillary number. The remaining gas can be further produced by changing the production pressure differential to disturb the original pressure system and gas expansion, so as to improve the microscopic gas displacement efficiency. Second, the microscopic gas displacement efficiency is closely related to the gas flow process. Formation or expansion of each water flow path may cause rapid increase of water cut and slows down the increase of gas displacement efficiency. Third, the microscopic pore structure and wettability are the inherent features of the gas reservoir, so the capillary number can be optimized to change the mode of GWC advancement, and then to effectively improve the microscopic gas displacement efficiency. It is concluded that for real gas wells, the evolution of mechanical mechanisms of GWC advancement should be revealed depending upon the microscopic pore structure and wettability of the reservoir, and then the optimal capillary number can be determined. Furthermore, clarifying the pore-scale water-gas flow characteristics and physical mechanism of microscopic gas displacement provides guidance for the planning of enhanced gas recovery.

In various natural and engineered systems, mineral–fluid interactions take place in the presence of multiple fluid phases. While there is evidence that the interplay between multiphase flow processes and reactions controls the evolution of these systems, investigation of the dynamics that shape this interplay at the pore scale has received little attention. Specifically, continuum scale models rarely consider the effect of multiphase flow parameters on mineral reaction rates or apply simple corrections as a function of the reactive surface area or saturation of the aqueous phase, without developing a mechanistic understanding of the pore-scale dynamics. In this study, we developed a framework that couples the two-phase flow simulator of OpenFOAM (open field operation and manipulation) with the geochemical reaction capability of CrunchTope to examine pore-scale dynamics of two phase flow and their impacts on mineral reaction rates. For our investigations, flat 2D channels and single sine wave channels were used to represent smooth and rough geometries. Calcite dissolution in these channels was quantified with single phase flow and two phase flow at a range of velocities. We observed that the bulk calcite dissolution rates were not only affected by the loss of reactive surface area as it becomes occupied by the non-reactive non-aqueous phase, but also largely influenced by the changes in local velocity profiles, e.g., recirculation zones, due to the presence of the non-aqueous phase. The extent of the changes in reaction rates in the two-phase systems compared to the corresponding single phase system is dependent on the flow rate (i.e., capillary number) and channel geometry, and follows a non-monotonic relationship with respect to aqueous saturation. The pore-scale simulation results highlight the importance of interfacial dynamics in controlling mineral reactions and can be used to better constrain reaction rate descriptions in multiphase continuum scale models. These results also emphasize the need for experimental studies that underpin the development of mechanistic models for multiphase flow in reactive systems.

Ostwald ripening of gas bubbles is a spontaneous mass transfer process that can impact the storage volume of trapped gas in the subsurface. In homogeneous porous media with identical pores, bubbles evolve toward an equilibrium state of equal pressure and volume. How the presence of two liquids impacts ripening of a bubble population is less known. We hypothesize that the equilibrium bubble sizes depend on the surrounding liquid configuration and oil/water capillary pressure. We investigate ripening of nitrogen bubbles in homogeneous porous media containing decane and water using a level set method that alternately simulates capillary-controlled displacement and mass transfer between bubbles to eradicate chemical-potential differences. We explore impacts of initial fluid distribution and oil/water capillary pressure on the bubble evolution. Ripening in three-phase scenarios in porous media stabilizes gas bubbles to sizes that depend on their surrounding liquids. Bubbles in oil decrease in size while bubbles in water increase in size with increasing oil/water capillary pressure. Bubbles in oil reach local equilibrium before the three-phase system stabilizes globally. Select porous carbonate cores are used to carry out water-flooding oil micro-CT flooding experiments, and use image processing to separate oil, water, microfacies, and rock skeleton. The gray value is used to determine the distribution position of the microfacies sub-resolution remaining oil. The gray image resolution is improved by the SRCNN method to improve the pore identification accuracy. The distribution and evolution law of the sub-resolution remaining oil after the displacement is determined by the oil-water distribution results. Using the SRCNN method, the pore recognition accuracy of the original scanned images of the two samples was increased by 47.88 times and 9.09 times, respectively. The sub-resolution residual oil and the macro-pore residual oil were determined from the CT scan images after the brine was saturated and divided into five categories. With the increase in the displacement ratio, the columnar and droplet residual oil of the low-permeability samples first increased and then decreased, and the cluster residual oil gradually decreased. The continuous residual oil of the hypertonic samples gradually decreased, and the discontinuous residual oil gradually increased. According to the research results of carbonate pore throat identification and sub-resolution microscopic residual oil change characteristics after water flooding under the SRCNN method, a method for distinguishing porous carbonate reservoirs is provided. Fluid flow through porous material is relevant in different fields of engineering, such as in engine and vehicle development, and can be supported through CFD simulation. Numerical simulations at the pore-scale can be used to replace or reduce expensive laboratory measurements. These methods offer a valuable opportunity to connect the pore-scale properties of the porous material with displacement processes on the continuum-scale. Furthermore, they allow researchers to specify crucial flow properties, e.g., capillary pressure, which are crucial for REV-scale research. Three main methods, direct numerical, pore network modeling, and hybrid approaches, are widely used in order to analyze the pore-scale mechanics of fluid flow behavior through porous materials with CFD simulations. The present comprehensive review demonstrates and highlights the significant advantages, disadvantages, and critical challenges in the pore-scale fluid flow simulations. The understanding of multiphase flow phenomena occurring in porous media at the pore scale is fundamental in a significant number of fields, from life science to geo and environmental engineering. However, because of the optical opacity and the geometrical complexity of natural porous media, detailed visual characterization is not possible or is limited and requires powerful and expensive imaging techniques. As a consequence, the understanding of micro-scale behavior is based on the interpretation of macro-scale parameters and indirect measurements. Microfluidic devices are transparent and synthetic tools that reproduce the porous network on a 2D plane, enabling the direct visualization of the fluid dynamics. Moreover, microfluidic patterns (also called micromodels) can be specifically designed according to research interests by tuning their geometrical features and surface properties. In this work we design, fabricate and test two different micromodels for the visualization and analysis of the gas-brine fluid flow, occurring during gas injection and withdrawal in underground storage systems. In particular, we compare two different designs: a regular grid and a real rock-like pattern reconstructed from a thin section of a sample of Hostun rock. We characterize the two media in terms of porosity, tortuosity and pore size distribution using the A* algorithm and CFD simulation. We fabricate PDMS-glass devices via soft lithography, and we perform preliminary air-water displacement tests at different capillary numbers to observe the impact of the design on the fluid dynamics. The classical diffusion models fail to predict the diffusivity of bi-dispersed porous materials, particularly at low macro-porosity. In this work, a pore-scale simulation is carried out to investigate the diffusion process inside ordered and random bi-dispersed pore structures under different growth phases and shapes. The applicability of existing models is evaluated. The results reveal that Maxwell and Nield models are inadequate to predict the diffusivity of the ordered macropore structure under different growth phase types and shapes. Meanwhile, the ordered distribution of microporous spherical particles is superior to that of macropores. For random pore structure, the macropore-macropore diffusion path contributes to the error of the random pore model, which depends on the ratio of the micropore-macropore diffusivity. The phase equilibrium conditions of methane hydrate, particularly the phase equilibrium pressure, are influenced by capillary pressure. In this study, the existing model for phase equilibrium pressure is enhanced, and a novel methane hydrate dissociation model is formulated by integrating it with the established hydrate dissociation model. A numerical simulation is conducted on experimental research, and the reliability of the model is validated through comparison with experimental data, yielding consistent results. The significance and necessity of considering capillary pressure between hydrate and water in the exploration of methane hydrate dissociation in micropores are elucidated. The proposed model is employed to further elucidate the evolution of various factors such as methane generation rate, phase distribution, temperature distribution, and phase equilibrium pressure distribution. The findings underscore the critical role of capillary pressure between hydrates and water, emphasizing its substantial impact on the accuracy of hydrate dissociation models. Specifically, the cumulative gas production and methane generation rate values obtained are relatively diminished when neglecting capillary pressure between hydrate and water. Capillary pressure, hydrate dissociation effects, and the coupled effect of interphase heat transfer collectively influence the distribution of phase equilibrium pressure, methane generation rate, phase distribution, temperature distribution, and phase equilibrium pressure distribution. The corrosion-induced permeability changes of nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) are one of the crucial factors constraining the successful application of NZVI in the remediation of contaminated groundwater. It is of great significance to study the dynamic evolution of corrosion products of NZVI after NZVI is injected into porous media and its influence on pore plugging effect from the pore scale. Micro computed tomography (Micro-CT) imaging technology, mineralogical characterization and theoretical calculations were used to understand the details of NZVI corrosion plugging porous media at the pore scale. This study reveals the factors of NZVI corrosion plugging porous media, namely, gas production (H 2 ) in the early and middle stages of corrosion (before 90 days) and solid phase changes (NZVI volume increase and migration) in the later stages (after 90 days). The permeability loss rate of the porous media was 66.8%, 87.3%, 79.4%, and 53.6% at the corrosion times of 30, 60, 90, and 120 days, respectively. After 90 d of corrosion, the particle size of NZVI increases by 7.9%, and the secondary minerals formed by corrosion are mainly Fe 3 O 4 /γ-Fe 2 O 3 and FeOOH. In addition, this study also found that the migration of NZVI after 90 d was due to its corrosion reducing the magnetic attraction between particles, dissociating into smaller particles or agglomerates under the action of fluid dynamics, resulting in its redistribution in the porous medium and causing blockage. Taking the non-stick coal from Yangchangwan Coal Mine as the research object, based on the micro-CT scanning experiment and Avizo processing software, the pore-fracture, minerals and coal matrix of the coal are accurately extracted and segmented. Through the three-dimensional reconstruction technology, the connected pores and fracture models are obtained. On this basis, an equivalent pore network model（PNM）with the morphological topological structure of pores and fractures was further established, and the pore-throat structure parameters in the coal were statistically analyzed, including pore radius, pore volume, throat radius, throat length, and coordination number. Based on the pore-scale seepage simulation, the visualization seepage of single-phase water in the pore-fracture space was realized, and the absolute permeability in three directions was calculated. The results show that the Yangchangwan non-stick coal is dominated by flaky pore clusters and large-scale vertical fractures. The average pore radius and throat radius is 106 μm and 27.79 μm, respectively, and the average coordination number is 3.45. In the process of single-phase water seepage, the seepage velocity in the pore-fracture space is higher than that of the outlet and inlet, and the permeability in the three directions shows obvious anisotropy. Among them, the absolute permeability value in the y direction is the largest, and in the x direction is the smallest.

A pore-scale numerical simulation for combustion of methane-air mixtures in a two-layer porous media burner made of staggered arrangement of connected particles is preformed. Combustion is modeled by a one-step reaction mechanism, and solid surface radiation heat transfer is computed by discrete ordinates (DO) model. The bridge approach is used to deal with the point contact between adjacent particles. The present study is intended to investigate the non-equilibrium characteristics of gas velocity and temperature under two operating parameters such as the inlet velocity and equivalence ratio. A comparison of the numerical values and experimental values was carried out to prove the effectiveness of numerical model, and a good agreement is shown. The results showed considerable non-equilibrium of velocity and temperature along the space coordinate due to the inhomogeneous porous structure. The extent of flow non-equilibrium increases as inlet velocity and equivalence ratio are increased. The extent of gas temperature non-equilibrium decreases slightly with the inlet velocity, but the equivalence ratio effect on thermal non-equilibrium can be neglected.

We present two novel Volume-of-Solid (VoS) formulations for micro-continuum simulation of mineral dissolution at the pore-scale. The traditional VoS formulation (VoS-ψ) uses a diffuse interface localization function ψ to ensure stability and limit diffusion of the reactive surface. The main limitation of this formulation is that accuracy is strongly dependent on the choice of the localization function. Our first novel improved formulation (iVoS) uses the divergence of a reactive flux to localize the reaction at the fluid-solid interface, so no localization function is required. Our second novel formulation (VoS-ψ′) uses a localization function with a parameter that is fitted to ensure that the reactive surface area is conserved globally. Both novel methods are validated by comparison with experiments, numerical simulations using an interface tracking method based on the Arbitrary Eulerian Lagrangian (ALE) framework, and numerical simulations using the VoS-ψ. All numerical methods are implemented in GeoChemFoam, our reactive transport toolbox and three benchmark test cases in both synthetic and real pore geometries are considered: 1) dissolution of a calcite post by acid injection in a microchannel and experimental comparison, 2) dissolution in a 2D polydisperse disc micromodel at different dissolution regimes and 3) dissolution in a Ketton carbonate rock sample and comparison to in-situ micro-CT experiments. We find that the iVoS results match accurately experimental results and simulation results obtained with the ALE method, while the VoS-ψ method leads to inaccuracies that are mostly corrected by the VoS-ψ’ formulation. In addition, the VoS methods are significantly faster than the ALE method, with a speed-up factor of between 2 and 12.

Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) can control the structural characteristic parameters through implicit functions, which possesses great significance for the customization of porous matrix topologies used in transpiration cooling. An innovative geometric reconstruction and meshing method is developed to reconstruct different TPMS porous matrix, a pore-scale numerical simulation of transpiration cooling coupled with mainstream is performed, and a hot wind tunnel experiment is developed to validate the numerical method. The main conclusions are as follows: The flow resistance loss of coolant within porous matrix is greatly influenced by the shape and size of pore throat, and due to the interaction between mainstream and coolant, higher flow resistance loss doesn't mean a higher coolant injection pressure. The influence of pore morphology on cooling efficiency is more obvious at higher coolant dosage, and considering the coolant injection pressure and cooling efficiency at the same time, the W(B) structure shows the best comprehensive performance. The generation of counter-rotating vortex pairs (CRVPs) in coolant film might lead to the increase in skin-friction coefficient on the structure surface, and the complex outflow angle of coolant can inhibit the generation of CRVPs, so for the case needs to reduce the skin-friction resistance, W(A) structure is recommended. In this study, a pore-scale model is established to investigate the contributions of natural convection on the effective thermal conductivity (ETC) of porous media, which takes the reconstructed microstructures as the geometry input. We thus examine the effects of the porosity, thermal conductivity of the fluid and solid phases, and heating direction on the critical pore size where the natural convection starts to work. The results show that the critical pore size decreases with increasing porosity and heating temperature, but increases with the rise in the thermal conductivity of solid phase. Moreover, the critical pore size is significantly lower for the lateral heating, compared with the bottom heating. Finally, we proposed a new formula as an indicator to determine the significance of natural convection to the heat transfer in porous media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, the pore‐scale dynamics of immiscible displacement of ScCO2–brine in a homogeneous pore network is studied using the volume of fluid method. The simulation results are verified with the theoretical equation and literature experimental data. First, the pore‐space filling is performed in a unit pore cell having an equal and unequal pore throat for both drainage and spontaneous imbibition. It is observed that the pore‐space filling sequence for drainage follows the rules described by the Young‐Laplace equation whereas the filling sequence did not follow the rule for spontaneous imbibition. Secondly, the simulation is performed for a homogeneous pore network. It is found that the transverse average volume fraction of ScCO2 from the simulation matches with the experimental data for intermediate and higher capillary numbers. Further, the present simulation is extended to study the flow regime identification and viscosity ratio and contact angle effects on ScCO2 volume fraction profile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In various natural and engineered systems, mineral–fluid interactions take place in the presence of multiple fluid phases. While there is evidence that the interplay between multiphase flow processes and reactions controls the evolution of these systems, investigation of the dynamics that shape this interplay at the pore scale has received little attention. Specifically, continuum scale models rarely consider the effect of multiphase flow parameters on mineral reaction rates or apply simple corrections as a function of the reactive surface area or saturation of the aqueous phase, without developing a mechanistic understanding of the pore-scale dynamics. In this study, we developed a framework that couples the two-phase flow simulator of OpenFOAM (open field operation and manipulation) with the geochemical reaction capability of CrunchTope to examine pore-scale dynamics of two phase flow and their impacts on mineral reaction rates. For our investigations, flat 2D channels and single sine wave channels were used to represent smooth and rough geometries. Calcite dissolution in these channels was quantified with single phase flow and two phase flow at a range of velocities. We observed that the bulk calcite dissolution rates were not only affected by the loss of reactive surface area as it becomes occupied by the non-reactive non-aqueous phase, but also largely influenced by the changes in local velocity profiles, e.g., recirculation zones, due to the presence of the non-aqueous phase. The extent of the changes in reaction rates in the two-phase systems compared to the corresponding single phase system is dependent on the flow rate (i.e., capillary number) and channel geometry, and follows a non-monotonic relationship with respect to aqueous saturation. The pore-scale simulation results highlight the importance of interfacial dynamics in controlling mineral reactions and can be used to better constrain reaction rate descriptions in multiphase continuum scale models. These results also emphasize the need for experimental studies that underpin the development of mechanistic models for multiphase flow in reactive systems.

The understanding of multiphase flow phenomena occurring in porous media at the pore scale is fundamental in a significant number of fields, from life science to geo and environmental engineering. However, because of the optical opacity and the geometrical complexity of natural porous media, detailed visual characterization is not possible or is limited and requires powerful and expensive imaging techniques. As a consequence, the understanding of micro-scale behavior is based on the interpretation of macro-scale parameters and indirect measurements. Microfluidic devices are transparent and synthetic tools that reproduce the porous network on a 2D plane, enabling the direct visualization of the fluid dynamics. Moreover, microfluidic patterns (also called micromodels) can be specifically designed according to research interests by tuning their geometrical features and surface properties. In this work we design, fabricate and test two different micromodels for the visualization and analysis of the gas-brine fluid flow, occurring during gas injection and withdrawal in underground storage systems. In particular, we compare two different designs: a regular grid and a real rock-like pattern reconstructed from a thin section of a sample of Hostun rock. We characterize the two media in terms of porosity, tortuosity and pore size distribution using the A* algorithm and CFD simulation. We fabricate PDMS-glass devices via soft lithography, and we perform preliminary air-water displacement tests at different capillary numbers to observe the impact of the design on the fluid dynamics. This preliminary work serves as a validation of design and fabrication procedures and opens the way to further investigations.

Within this work, we upscale the equations that describe the pore-scale behaviour of nonlinear porous elastic composites, using the asymptotic homogenization technique in order to derive the macroscale effective governing equations. A porous hyperelastic composite can be thought of as being comprised of a matrix interacting with a number of subphases and percolated by a fluid flowing in the pores (which is chosen to be Newtonian and incompressible here). A general nonlinear macroscale model is derived and is then specified for a particular choice of strain energy function, namely the de Saint-Venant function. This leads to a macroscale system of PDEs, which is of poroelastic type with additional terms and transformations to account for the nonlinear behaviour of the material. Our new porohyperelastic-type model describes the effective behaviour of nonlinear porous composites by prescribing the stress balance equations, the conservation of mass and Darcy's law. The coefficients of these macroscale equations encode the detailed microstructure of the material and are to be found by solving pore-scale differential problems. The model reduces to the following limit cases of (a) linear poroelastic composites when the deformation gradient approaches the identity, (b) nonlinear composites when there are no pores and (c) nonlinear poroelasticity when only the matrix–fluid interaction is considered. This model is applicable when the interactions between various hyperelastic solid phases occur at the pore-scale, as in biological tissues such as artery walls, the myocardium, lungs and liver. The development of high-resolution in situ imaging has allowed contact angles to be measured directly inside porous materials. We evaluate the use of concepts in integral geometry to determine contact angle. Specifically, we test the hypothesis that it is possible to determine an average contact angle from measurements of the Gaussian curvature of the fluid/fluid meniscus using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. We show that it is not possible to unambiguously determine an average contact angle from the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. We instead present an approximate relationship: 2 π n (1 - cos θ) = 4 π - ∫ κ G 12 dS 12 , where n is the number of closed loops of the three-phase contact line where phases 1 and 2 contact the surface, θ is the average contact angle, while κ G 12 is the Gaussian curvature of the fluid meniscus which is integrated over its surface S 12 . We then use the results of pore-scale lattice Boltzmann simulations to assess the accuracy of this approach to determine a representative contact angle for two-phase flow in porous media. We show that in simple cases with a flat solid surface, the approximate expression works well. When applied to simulations on pore space images, the equation provides a robust estimate of contact angle, accurate to within 3 ° , when averaged over many fluid clusters, although individual values can have significant errors because of the approximations used in the calculation. Capillary-dominated multiphase flow in porous materials is strongly affected by the pore walls' wettability. Recent micro-computed tomography (mCT) studies found unexpectedly wide contact angle distributions measured on static fluid distributions inside the pores. We hypothesize that analysis on time-resolved mCT data of fluid invasion events may be more directly relevant to the fluid dynamics. We approximated receding contact angles locally in time and space on time-resolved mCT datasets of drainage in a glass bead pack and a limestone. Whenever a meniscus suddenly entered one or more pores, geometric and thermodynamically consistent contact angles in the surrounding pores were measured in the time step just prior to the displacement event. We introduced a new force-based contact angle, defined to recover the measured capillary pressure in the invaded pore throat prior to interface movement. Unlike the classical method, the new geometric and force-based contact angles followed plausible, narrower distributions and were mutually consistent. We were unable to obtain credible results with the thermodynamically consistent method, likely because of sensitivity to common imaging artifacts and neglecting dissipation. Time-resolved mCT analysis can yield a more appropriate wettability characterization for pore scale models, despite the need to further reduce image analysis uncertainties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The change of wettability toward more water-wet by the injection of low salinity water can improve oil recovery from porous rocks, which is known as low salinity water flooding. To simulate this process at the pore-scale, we propose that the alteration in surface wettability mediated by thin water films which are below the resolution of simulation grid blocks has to be considered, as observed in experiments. This is modeled by a wettability alteration model based on rate-limited adsorption of ions onto the rock surface. The wettability alteration model is developed and incorporated into a lattice Boltzmann simulator which solves both the Navier-Stokes equation for oil/water two-phase flow and the advection-diffusion equation for ion transport. The model is validated against two experiments in the literature, then applied to 3D micro-CT images of a rock. Our model correctly simulated the experimental observations caused by the slow wettability alteration driven by the development of water films. In the simulations on the 3D rock pore structure, a distinct difference in the mixing of high and low salinity water is observed between secondary and tertiary low salinity flooding, resulting in different oil recoveries. The phase change problem in porous media has attracted extensive attention due to its complexity of both the heat transfer process and pore structure. This study investigates the mechanisms governing the freezing of water at the pore scale in a porous model, employing a combination of experimental and numerical approaches. Mathematical-physical model is used to simulate the phase change process in porous structures. Experiments are conducted on water freezing in porous resin and steel, with a pore distance of 500 μm. The evolutions of the phase interface and temperature field during the freezing process are analyzed. Results demonstrate good agreement between the simulations and experiments. Moreover, when the thermal conductivity of the solid skeleton is lower than that of the fluid (porous resin), the phase interface in the pore evolves from concave to convex, with a non-linear change in relative curvature. The temperature gradient of the fluid and skeleton within the pore channels first decreases and then increases. However, when solid skeletons have higher thermal conductivities than the fluid (porous steel), the evolution of the phase interface and its relative curvature, as well as the temperature gradient in the pore are different from the other case. • Pore-scale freezing in porous media: experiment and simulation. • Simulation results match well with the experimental observations. • Analyzed phase interface and temperature field evolutions. • Different thermal conductivities of skeletons cause varied freezing interface evolutions. The main means of secondary oil recovery is water flooding, which has been widely used in various oilfields. Different flow rates have a great impact on the recovery ratio and the occurrence of remaining oil. Scholars have carried out extensive research on it, but mostly on the macro scale, and research on the three-dimensional micro scale is also limited by accuracy and a lack of accurate understanding. In this paper, micro-CT and core displacement experiments are used to intuitively show the occurrence state of remaining oil under different flow rates. Through a series of quantitative image processing methods and remaining oil classification methods, the occurrence characteristics of remaining oil under different flow rates are systematically evaluated and studied. The results show that: (1) As the displacement rate increases, the remaining oil saturation decreases (61%; 35%; 23%), but the remaining oil is more evenly distributed along the slice; (2) Two lower displacement speeds (0.003 mL/min; 0.03 mL/min) can reduce the volume of huge oil clusters under oil-saturated conditions, and the highest displacement speed (0.3 mL/min) can completely break up large oil clusters into small oil droplets. At the same time, the shape factor of the oil clusters also gradually increases; (3) The proportion of continuous remaining oil volume decreases, and the proportion of discontinuous remaining oil increases. Discontinuous remaining oil is the main production target of EOR; (4) After water flooding, the microscopic remaining oil is more inclined to the middle and corner parts of the larger pores.

Abstract A statistical technique for the pore-scale analyses of heterogeneity and representative elemental volume (REV) in unconventional shale rocks is hereby presented. First, core samples were obtained from shale formations. The images were scanned using microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) machine at 6.7 μm resolution with voxels of 990 × 990 × 1000. These were then processed, digitised, thresholded, segmented and features captured using numerical algorithms. This allows the segmentation of each sample into four distinct morphological entities consisting of pores, organic matter, shale grains and minerals. In order to analyse the degree of heterogeneity, Eagle Ford parallel sample was further cropped into 96 subsamples. Descriptive statistical approach was then used to evaluate the existence of heterogeneity within the subsamples. Furthermore, the Eagle Ford parallel and perpendicular samples were analysed for volumetric entities representative of the petrophysical variable, porosity, using corner point cropping technique. The results of porosity REV for Eagle ford parallel and perpendicular indicated sample representation at 300 μm voxel edge. Both pore volume distribution and descriptive statistical analyses suggested that a wide variation of heterogeneity exists at this scale of investigation. Furthermore, this experiment allows for adequate extraction of necessary information and structural parameters for pore-scale modelling and simulation. Additional studies focusing on re-evaluation at higher resolution are recommended.

We derive the entropy production for transport of multi-phase fluids in a non-deformable, porous medium exposed to differences in pressure, temperature, and chemical potentials. Thermodynamic extensive variables on the macro-scale are obtained by integrating over a representative elementary volume (REV). Contributions come from porous media specific properties, phase volumes, surface areas, and contact lines. Curvature effects are neglected. Using Euler homogeneity of the first order, we obtain the Gibbs equation for the REV. From this we define the intensive variables, the temperature, pressure, and chemical potentials, and, using the balance equations, we derive the entropy production for the REV. The entropy production defines sets of independent conjugate thermodynamic fluxes and forces in the standard way. The transport of two-phase flow of immiscible components is used to give a first illustration of the equations.

Conservation of energy is used to derive a thermodynamically-consistent contact angle, θ t , when fluid phase 1 displaces phase 2 in a porous medium. Assuming no change in Helmholtz free energy between two local equilibrium states we find that Δ a 1 s cos θ t = κ ϕ Δ S 1 + Δ a 12 , where a is the interfacial area per unit volume, ϕ is the porosity, S is the saturation and κ the curvature of the fluid-fluid interface. The subscript s denotes the solid, and we consider changes, Δ , in saturation and area. With the advent of high-resolution time-resolved three-dimensional X-ray imaging, all the terms in this expression can be measured directly. We analyse imaging datasets for displacement of oil by water in a water-wet and a mixed-wet sandstone. For the water-wet sample, the curvature is positive and oil bulges into the brine with almost spherical interfaces. In the mixed-wet case, larger interfacial areas are found, as the oil resides in layers. The mean curvature is close to zero, but the interface tends to bulge into brine in one direction, while brine bulges into oil in the other. We compare θ t with the values measured geometrically in situ on the pore-scale images, θ g . The thermodynamic angle θ t provides a robust and consistent characterization of wettability. Abstract Hydrodynamic dispersion and mixing under two-phase flow can be found in many natural, industrial, and engineering processes such as the modified salinity water flooding (MSWF). In MSWF the injected water displaces the formation brine and will interact with the crude oil and rock to improve the oil recovery. We show throughout numerical simulations that access of the injection water to the available pore space is not homogeneous, even in homogeneous porous media, and it is controlled by the saturation topology and pore-scale velocity field. Under the steady-state two-phase flow in a homogeneous porous medium, the velocity field has a bimodal distribution. The bimodal distribution of pore-scale velocity dictates two different transport time scales spatially distributed over the stagnant and flowing regions at a given saturation topology. These distinctly different transport time scales lead to a non-Fickian transport, which cannot be captured using the conventional advection-dispersion equation. Using the volume-of-fluid method implemented in the OpenFOAM (ver. 4.0), we simulated pore-scale two-phase flow and the hydrodynamic transport at different saturations. We have investigated the impact of stagnant saturation and the tortuosity of flow pathways on the dispersion coefficient and the mass exchange rate - as the two major parameters controlling transport and mixing - under steady-state two-phase flow. At the Darcy scale, different theories such as the mobile-immobile (MIM) theory have been proposed to capture the non-Fickian transport and mixing in two-phase flow through porous media. Based on the simulation results, we assess the validity of the assumptions employed in MIM to define the stagnant saturation and mass exchange rate coefficient. The results of this research provide fresh insights into the potential impact of saturation topology on mixing between the modified salinity water and the formation brine under steady-state flow conditions, which has not been investigated and reported in the literature. Quantifying interactions and dependencies among geometric, hydraulic and mechanical properties of reservoir sandstones is of particular importance for the exploration and utilisation of the geological subsurface and can be assessed by synthetic sandstones comprising the microstructural complexity of natural rocks. In the present study, three highly resolved samples of the Fontainebleau, Berea and Bentheim sandstones are generated by means of a process-based approach, which combines the gravity-driven deposition of irregularly shaped grains and their diagenetic cementation by three different schemes. The resulting evolution in porosity, permeability and rock stiffness is examined and compared to the respective micro-computer tomographic (micro-CT) scans. The grain contact-preferential scheme implies a progressive clogging of small throats and consequently produces considerably less connected and stiffer samples than the two other schemes. By contrast, uniform quartz overgrowth continuously alters the pore space and leads to the lowest elastic properties. The proposed stress-dependent cementation scheme combines both approaches of contact-cement and quartz overgrowth, resulting in granulometric, hydraulic and elastic properties equivalent to those of the respective micro-CT scans, where bulk moduli slightly deviate by 0.8%, 4.9% and 2.5% for the Fontainebleau, Berea and Bentheim sandstone, respectively. The synthetic samples can be further altered to examine the impact of mineral dissolution or precipitation as well as fracturing on various petrophysical correlations, which is of particular relevance for numerous aspects of a sustainable subsurface utilisation.

The diffusion–adsorption behavior of methane in coal is an important factor that both affecting the decay rate of gas production and the total gas production capacity. In this paper, we established a pore-scale Lattice Boltzmann (LB) model coupled with fluid flow, gas diffusion, and gas adsorption–desorption in the bi-dispersed porous media of coalbed methane. The Knudsen diffusion and dynamic adsorption–desorption of gas in clusters of coal particles were considered. Firstly, the model was verified by two classical cases. Then, three dimensionless numbers, Re, Pe, and Da, were adopted to discuss the impact of fluid velocity, gas diffusivity, and adsorption/desorption rate on the gas flow–diffusion–adsorption process. The effect of the gas adsorption layer in micropores on the diffusion–adsorption–desorption process was considered, and a Langmuir isotherm adsorption theory-based method was developed to obtain the dynamic diffusion coefficient, which can capture the intermediate process during adsorption/desorption reaches equilibrium. The pore-scale bi-disperse porous media of coal matrix was generated based on the RCP algorithm, and the characteristics of gas diffusion and adsorption in the coal matrix with different Pe, Da, and pore size distribution were discussed. The conclusions were as follows: (1) the influence of fluid velocity on the diffusion–adsorption process of coalbed methane at the pore-scale is very small and can be ignored; the magnitude of the gas diffusivity in macropores affects the spread range of the global gas diffusion and the process of adsorption and determines the position where adsorption takes place preferentially. (2) A larger Fickian diffusion coefficient or greater adsorption constant can effectively enhance the adsorption rate, and the trend of gas concentration- adsorption is closer to the Langmuir isotherm adsorption curve. (3) The gas diffusion–adsorption–desorption process is affected by the adsorption properties of coal: the greater the pL or Vm, the slower the global gas diffusivity decay. (4) The effect of the gas molecular adsorption layer has a great impact on the kinetic process of gas diffusion–adsorption–desorption. Coal is usually tight and has low permeability, so it is difficult to ensure that the gas diffusion and adsorption are sufficient, the direct use of a static isotherm adsorption equation may be incorrect.

Understanding transport phenomena and governing mechanisms of different physical and chemical processes in porous media has been a critical research area for decades. Correlating fluid flow behaviour at the micro-scale with macro-scale parameters, such as relative permeability and capillary pressure, is key to understanding the processes governing subsurface systems, and this in turn allows us to improve the accuracy of modelling and simulations of transport phenomena at a large scale. Over the last two decades, there have been significant developments in our understanding of pore-scale processes and modelling of complex underground systems. Microfluidic devices (micromodels) and imaging techniques, as facilitators to link experimental observations to simulation, have greatly contributed to these achievements. Although several reviews exist covering separately advances in one of these two areas, we present here a detailed review integrating recent advances and applications in both micromodels and imaging techniques. This includes a comprehensive analysis of critical aspects of fabrication techniques of micromodels, and the most recent advances such as embedding fibre optic sensors in micromodels for research applications. To complete the analysis of visualization techniques, we have thoroughly reviewed the most applicable imaging techniques in the area of geoscience and geo-energy. Moreover, the integration of microfluidic devices and imaging techniques was highlighted as appropriate. In this review, we focus particularly on four prominent yet very wide application areas, namely “fluid flow in porous media”, “flow in heterogeneous rocks and fractures”, “reactive transport, solute and colloid transport”, and finally “porous media characterization”. In summary, this review provides an in-depth analysis of micromodels and imaging techniques that can help to guide future research in the in-situ visualization of fluid flow in porous media.

For applications of reactive transport in porous media, optimal porous structures should possess both high surface area for reactive sites loading and low mass transport resistance. Hierarchical porous media with a combination of pores at different scales are designed for this purpose. Using the lattice Boltzmann method, pore-scale numerical studies are conducted to investigate diffusion-reaction processes in 2D hierarchical porous media generated by self-developed reconstruction scheme. Complex interactions between porous structures and reactive transport are revealed under different conditions. Simulation results show that adding macropores can greatly enhance the mass transport, but at the same time reduce the reactive surface, leading to complex change trend of the total reaction rate. Effects of gradient distribution of macropores within the porous medium are also investigated. It is found that a front-loose, back-tight (FLBT) hierarchical structure is desirable for enhancing mass transport, increasing total reaction rate, and improving catalyst utilization. On the whole, from the viewpoint of reducing cost and improving material performance, hierarchical porous structures, especially gradient structures with the size of macropores gradually decreasing along the transport direction, are desirable for catalyst application. Physical, chemical and mechanical pore-scale (i.e. micrometer-scale) mechanisms in rock are of key importance in many, if not all, subsurface processes. These processes are highly relevant in various applications, e.g. hydrocarbon recovery, CO 2 geo-sequestration, geophysical exploration, water production, geothermal energy production, or the prediction of the location of valuable hydrothermal deposits. Typical examples are multi-phase flow (e.g. oil and water) displacements driven by buoyancy, viscous or capillary forces, mineral-fluid interactions (e.g. mineral dissolution and/or precipitation over geological times), geo-mechanical rock behaviour (e.g. rock compaction during diagenesis) or fines migration during water production, which can dramatically reduce reservoir permeability (and thus reservoir performance). All above examples are 3D processes, and 2D experiments (as traditionally done for micro-scale investigations) will thus only provide qualitative information; for instance the percolation threshold is much lower in 3D than in 2D. However, with the advent of x-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT) – which is now routinely used – this limitation has been overcome, and such pore-scale processes can be observed in 3D at micrometer-scale. A serious complication is, however, the fact that in the subsurface high pressures and elevated temperatures (HPET) prevail, due to the hydrostatic and geothermal gradients imposed upon it. Such HPET-reservoir conditions significantly change the above mentioned physical and chemical processes, e.g. gas density is much higher at high pressure, which strongly affects buoyancy and wettability and thus gas distributions in the subsurface; or chemical reactions are significantly accelerated at increased temperature, strongly affecting fluid-rock interactions and thus diagenesis and deposition of valuable minerals. It is thus necessary to apply HPET conditions to the aforementioned μCT experiments, to be able to mimic subsurface conditions in a realistic way, and thus to obtain reliable results, which are vital input parameters required for building accurate larger-scale reservoir models which can predict the overall reservoir-scale (hectometer-scale) processes (e.g. oil production or diagenesis of a formation). We thus describe here the basic workflow of such HPET-μCT experiments, equipment requirements and apparatus design; and review the literature where such HPET-μCT experiments were used and which phenomena were investigated (these include: CO 2 geo-sequestration, oil recovery, gas hydrate formation, hydrothermal deposition/reactive flow). One aim of this paper is to give a guideline to users how to set-up a HPET-μCT experiment, and to provide a quick overview in terms of what is possible and what not, at least up to date. As a conclusion, HPET-μCT is a valuable tool when it comes to the investigation of subsurface micrometer-scaled processes, and we expect a rapidly expanding usage of HPET-μCT in subsurface engineering and the subsurface sciences. Turbulent flow characteristics and vortex behaviors in the pore space of real packed beds under different flow conditions is numerically investigated. Real geometric structure of randomly packed beds is modeled using the discrete element software LIGGGHTS. Both LES and RANS methods are employed to predict vortex shape and evolution features at pore scale in actual packed beds. The numerical model is validated corresponding to experimental data, a good agreement is achieved between predicted results and measurements. Based on the computational results, the distribution characteristics of vorticity and velocity in multiple representative special structures are analysed, such as the channel formed by two pellets, similar triangle area formed by compact spherical walls and channel. Besides the effects of special structures on vortex shape and turbulence intensity is studied, such as the guiding and friction effect by the side spherical wall on gas motion, and strong shear force on both sides of the main channel. The Q criterion is used to identify vortex structures and capture distribution and evolution of vortexes in the computational domain. Moreover, the effect of inlet velocity on the position and shape of eddies is investigated, and eddy morphological changes under unsteady inlet conditions are also discussed., At last, a comparison between LES and RANS methods shows that the LES method can capture more details of the distribution and shape of the vortexes in the pore space, and therefore it is more suitable to the complicated flow field in porous media. Water flooding is an economic method commonly used in secondary recovery, but a large quantity of crude oil is still trapped in reservoirs after water flooding. A deep understanding of the distribution of residual oil is essential for the subsequent development of water flooding. In this study, a pore-scale model is developed to study the formation process and distribution characteristics of residual oil. The Navier−Stokes equation coupled with a phase field method is employed to describe the flooding process and track the interface of fluids. The results show a significant difference in residual oil distribution at different wetting conditions. The difference is also reflected in the oil recovery and water cut curves. Much more oil is displaced in water-wet porous media than oil-wet porous media after water breakthrough. Furthermore, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) mechanisms of both surfactant and polymer flooding are studied, and the effect of operation times for different EOR methods are analyzed. The surfactant flooding not only improves oil displacement efficiency, but also increases microscale sweep efficiency by reducing the entry pressure of micropores. Polymer weakens the effect of capillary force by increasing the viscous force, which leads to an improvement in sweep efficiency. The injection time of the surfactant has an important impact on the field development due to the formation of predominant pathway, but the EOR effect of polymer flooding does not have a similar correlation with the operation times. Results from this study can provide theoretical guidance for the appropriate design of EOR methods such as the application of surfactant and polymer flooding.

This paper aims at developing a pore-scale numerical model for non-Darcy fluid flow through rough-walled fractures. A simple general relationship between the local hydraulic conductivity and the flow velocity is proposed. A new governing equation for non-Darcy fluid flow through rough-walled fractures is then derived by introducing this relationship into the Reynolds equation. Based on the non-linear finite element method, a self-developed code is used to simulate the non-Darcy fluid flow through fractures. It is found that the macroscopic results obtained by the numerical simulation agree well with the experimental results. Furthermore, some interesting experimental observations can be reproduced.
