The grassland biome is an important sink for atmospheric methane (CH4), a major greenhouse gas. There is considerable uncertainty in the grassland CH4 sink capacity due to diverse environmental gradients in which grasslands occur, and many environmental conditions can affect abiotic (e.g., CH4 diffusivity into soils) and biotic (e.g., methanotrophy) factors that determine spatial and temporal CH4 dynamics. We investigated the relative importance of a soil's gas diffusivity versus net methanotroph activity in 22 field plots in seven sites distributed across the US Great Plains by making approximately biweekly measures during the growing seasons over 3 years. We quantified net methanotroph activity and diffusivity by using an approach combining a gas tracer, chamber headspace measurements, and a mathematical model. At each plot, we also measured environmental characteristics, including water‐filled pore space (WFPS), soil temperature, and inorganic nitrogen contents, and examined the relative importance of these for controlling diffusivity and net methanotroph activity. At most of the plots across the seven sites, CH4 uptake rates were consistently greatest when WFPS was intermediate at the plot level. Our results show that variation in net methanotroph activity was more important than diffusivity in explaining temporal variations in net CH4 uptake, but the two factors were equally important for driving spatial variation across the seven sites. WFPS was a significant predictor for diffusivity only in plots with sandy soils. WFPS was the most important control on net methanotroph activity, with net methanotroph activity showing a parabolic response to WFPS (concave down), and the shape of this response differed significantly among sites. Moreover, we found that the WFPS level at peak net methanotroph activity was strongly correlated with the mean annual precipitation of the site. These results suggest that the local precipitation regime determines unique sensitivity of CH4 uptake rates to soil moisture. Our findings indicate that grassland CH4 uptake may be predicted using local soil water conditions. The spatial pattern of leaf stoichiometry is critical in predicting plant palatability and ecosystem productivity and nutrient cycling rates and thus is a major focus of community ecological research. Coastal wetlands as vital blue carbon ecosystems, with high possibility to be vulnerable to plant invasion, studies focused on stoichiometry and its pattern are important to unveil the elements cycling process. However, previous studies have mainly focused on stoichiometry in terrestrial ecosystems, there are few studies conducted on coastal wetland ecosystems, especially the studies that compare leaf stoichiometry between native and non-native plants in coastal wetlands. In this study, we compared the latitudinal patterns of leaf nutrient contents and their stoichiometric ratios between native and non-native plant species across coastal wetland ecosystems and investigated whether leaf stoichiometric patterns were driven by climatic factors. We used a compiled global data set of 954 records to conduct a systematic meta-analysis. The results showed that there were significant differences in latitudinal patterns of leaf carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) contents and C:N ratio between native and non-native species, as well as significant differences in leaf C, N, and phosphorus (P) contents. For native species, we found significant latitudinal patterns in leaf C, N, and P contents and C:N and C:P ratios, whereas for non-native species, we found significant latitudinal patterns in leaf N content and C:P and N:P ratios. Mean annual temperature of the data collection site was a significant predictor of leaf stoichiometry of native plants but only of leaf N content and C:P ratio of nonnative plants. Thus, we demonstrated spatial heterogeneity in leaf stoichiometries between native and non-native plants in coastal wetlands, indicating that such differences should be emphasized in future biogeochemical models and plant-herbivore interaction studies owing to the important role of wetland plants in global C, N, and P cycles. Our findings increase understanding of plant-related nutrient and elements cycling in coastal wetlands, as well as improve predictions of plant growth rates and vegetation productivity across large scales under plant invasion scenarios. Above-ground biomass (AGB) is affected by numerous factors, including topography, climate, land use, or tree/forest attributes. Investigating the distribution and driving factors of AGB within the managed forests in Nepal is crucial for developing effective strategies for climate change mitigation, and sustainable forest management and conservation. A total of 110 field plots (circular 0.02 ha plots with a 9 m radius), and airborne laser scanning (ALS)-light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data were collected in 2021. The random forest (RF) model was employed to predict the AGB at a 30 m × 30 m resolution based on 32 LiDAR metrics derived from ALS returns. The study assessed the relationships between the AGB distribution and nine independent variables using statistical techniques like the random forest model and partial dependence plots. Results showed that the mean value of the estimated AGB was 120 tons/ha, ranging from 0 to 446.42 tons/ha. AGB showed higher values in the northeast and southeast regions, gradually decreasing towards the northwest. Land use land cover, mean annual temperature, and mean annual precipitation were identified as the primary factors influencing the variability in AGB distribution, accounting for 64% of the variability. Elevation, slope, and distance from rivers were positively correlated with AGB, while proximity to roads had a negative correlation. The increase in precipitation and temperature contributed to the initial rise in AGB, but beyond a certain lag, these variables led to a decline in AGB. This study showed the efficiency of the random forest model and partial dependence plots in examining the relationship between the AGB and its driving factors within managed forests. The study highlights the importance of understanding the AGB driving factors and utilizing LiDAR data for informed decisions regarding the region's sustainable forest management and climate change mitigation efforts. Studying both soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) storages in different climate zones and their relationship with climatic factors is of great significance for understanding soil fertility and predicting global climate change. Climate influences soil minerals, which are important for soil organic carbon (SOC) and N retention. However, there are few studies on SOC and soil total nitrogen (STN) storage in different climatic zones, and of the effects of soil oxidation minerals on SOC and STN storage. We measured the storage of SOC and STN and the content of oxidizable minerals in soils from different climatic regions, then obtained climate data from the China Meteorological Data Service Center, and finally investigated the effects of climate factors and soil oxides minerals on SOC and STN. The results showed that climatic factors (mean annual temperature—MAT, mean annual precipitation—MAP, and ≥10 °C mean annual cumulative temperature—MACT) had significant effects on SOC and STN content, and there was significant epistatic clustering of SOC and STN contents in different climatic zones. When MAT, MAP, and MACT increased, SOC and STN storage showed a trend of increasing and then decreasing, and both SOC and STN storages were largest in the middle temperate zone. The content of soil metal oxides (Al2O3, Fe2O3, Na2O, MgO, CaO, K2O, and TiO2) showed significant positive correlation with climatic factors (MAT, MAP, and MACT). The contents of Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaO, K2O, and TiO2 showed significant negative correlation with SOC and STN contents. In summary, our results showed that, although soil metal oxides (SMO) have a protective effect on SOC and STN to some extent, they do not change the influence of climatic factors on SOC and STN storage. Premise: Continental‐scale leaf trait studies can help explain how plants survive in different environments, but large data sets are costly to assemble at this scale. Automating the measurement of digitized herbarium collections could rapidly expand the data available to such studies. We used machine learning to identify and measure leaves from existing, digitized herbarium specimens. The process was developed, validated, and applied to analyses of relationships between leaf size and climate within and among species for two genera: Syzygium (Myrtaceae) and Ficus (Moraceae). Methods: Convolutional neural network (CNN) models were used to detect and measure complete leaves in images. Predictions of a model trained with a set of 35 randomly selected images and a second model trained with 35 user‐selected images were compared using a set of 50 labeled validation images. The validated models were then applied to 1227 Syzygium and 2595 Ficus specimens digitized by the National Herbarium of New South Wales, Australia. Leaf area measurements were made for each genus and used to examine links between leaf size and climate. Results: The user‐selected training method for Syzygium found more leaves (9347 vs. 8423) using fewer training masks (218 vs. 225), and found leaves with a greater range of sizes than the random image training method. Within each genus, leaf size was positively associated with temperature and rainfall, consistent with previous observations. However, within species, the associations between leaf size and environmental variables were weaker. Conclusions: CNNs detected and measured leaves with levels of accuracy useful for trait extraction and analysis and illustrate the potential for machine learning of herbarium specimens to massively increase global leaf trait data sets. Within‐species relationships were weak, suggesting that population history and gene flow have a strong effect at this level. The composition of forest soil organic matter is an important part of the global carbon cycle, which is effective by temperature and moisture. As we all know, the temperature and moisture in the low-latitude plateau regions are very sensitive to changes in latitude and altitude. However, the composition of soil organic matter response to changes in latitude and altitude in the low-latitude plateau regions is unknown. In this study, the effects of latitude (21–29° N) and altitude (500–4000 m) on soil organic carbon (SOC) and humic acid carbon (HAC), fulvic acid carbon (FAC), and humin carbon (HMC) in forest surface soil (0–10 cm) were investigated. The results showed that the contents of soil organic carbon and humus increased with the increase in altitude and latitude. The effect of altitude on the composition of organic matter was significant only at 23° N to 25° N. The composition of organic matter is not only regulated by mean annual temperature (MAT) and soil moisture content (SMC) but also affected by soil pH, carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N), and powder. The soil surface layer (0–10 cm) carbon sequestration capacity in high-latitude and high-altitude areas is stronger than that in low-latitude and low-altitude areas. As a consequence, in today's response to global climate change, the high carbon sequestration capacity of high latitude and high altitude areas should be given attention and protection. Deciphering the spatial patterns of alpine treelines is critical for understanding the ecosystem processes involved in the persistence of tree species and their altitudinal limit. Treelines are thought to be controlled by temperature, and other environmental variables but they have rarely been investigated in regions with different land‐use change legacies. Here, we systematically investigated treeline elevation in the Apennines (Italy) and Southern Alps (New Zealand) with contrasting human history but similar biogeographic trajectories, intending to identify distinct drivers that affect their current elevation and highlight their respective peculiarities. Over 3622 km of Apennines, treeline elevation was assessed in 302 mountain peaks and in 294 peaks along 4504 km of Southern Alps. The major difference between the Southern Alps and Apennines treeline limit is associated with their mountain aspects. In the Southern Alps, the scarcely anthropized Nothofagus treeline elevation was higher on the warmer equator‐facing slopes than on the pole‐facing ones. Contrary to what would be expected based on temperature limitation, the elevation of Fagus sylvatica treelines in the Apennines was higher on colder, pole‐facing slopes than on human‐shaped equator‐facing, warmer mountainsides. Pervasive positive correlations were found between treeline elevation and temperature in the Southern Alps but not in the Apennines. While the position of the Fagus and Nothofagus treelines converge on similar isotherms of annual average temperature, a striking isothermal difference between the temperatures of the hottest month on which the two taxonomic groups grow exists. We conclude that actual treeline elevation reflects the ecological processes driven by a combination of local‐scale topoclimatic conditions, and human disturbance legacy. Predicting dynamic processes affecting current and future alpine treeline position requires further insight into the modulating influences that are currently understood at a regional scale. The Himalayan region is likely particularly exposed to climate change indicated by the high regional rate of change. The number of high-resolution, well-calibrated, and long-term paleoclimate reconstructions are however regrettably few, to set this change in a longer-term context. The dendroclimatic reconstructions over Himalaya that do exist have only reconstructed summer season temperatures, and rarely or never attempted to reconstruct mean annual temperatures. The paucity of long meteorological records is a matter of concern when developing chronologies of climate sensitive tree-ring data in Bhutan, but the chronologies would theoretically be of high potential for extending short meteorological records back in time using trees in high-elevation ecotones. The objectives of this study were to explore dendroclimatic signals in tree-ring width chronologies of Abies densa growing in these extreme ecotones and to reconstruct, if possible, annual temperatures over Northern Bhutan. A point-by-point regression analysis revealed that the regional composite chronology was significantly and positively correlated with temperatures of all months of the current year, i.e., January to December. The chronology was highly correlated with annual temperatures (calibration period R = 0.67 and validation period R = 0.50; p < 0.001) allowing a reconstruction of temperature over Northern Bhutan (NB-TEMR). The NB-TEMR reveals some common variations with summer temperature reconstructions of the Northern Hemisphere as well as the Himalayan region, particularly w.r.t to the recent warming trend. The reconstruction covers the period of 1765 to 2017. This reconstruction reveals a warming trend since 1850 with higher rates of warming 1935 to 2017, but with a pause around 1940–1970. The warming is consistent with reduced volcanic activity and increase of greenhouse gases. We anticipate that our new reconstruction of annual mean temperature could be an important contribution for future climate change studies and assessments of climate models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many invasion hypotheses propose biotic interactions as the main mechanism to explain non‐native species' success. Despite the evidence that the strength of biotic interactions varies with abiotic context, it remains unclear whether the importance of the different mechanisms proposed to explain invasion predictably varies with the abiotic context and whether this variation is consistent across different growth forms.We reviewed studies at a global scale to evaluate whether evapotranspiration, latitude, precipitation and temperature influence the importance of disturbance, enemy release, facilitation, and novel weapons mechanisms to explain non‐native plant invasions. In total, we calculated 171 effect sizes for ~300 non‐native plant species covering a wide range of environmental conditions and growth forms.Environmental context and plant growth form influenced the role played by each invasion mechanism. The importance of disturbance in facilitating invasion exhibited a quadratic relationship with latitude and temperature, and decreased with increasing precipitation. In mixed communities and trees, disturbance was mediated by either evapotranspiration, latitude, precipitation or temperature. Enemy release exhibited a quadratic relationship with evapotranspiration, latitude and precipitation, and it was positively related to temperature. The importance of enemy release was also contingent on growth form and was highly context‐dependent. Enemy release responses for grasses, and trees were modulated by either evapotranspiration, latitude, precipitation or temperature. The importance of facilitation decreased with increasing temperature. In forbs, facilitation decreased with evapotranspiration and temperature. The importance of novel weapons was more strongly confirmed for studies conducted at lower evapotranspiration, precipitation and higher latitudes, and exhibited a quadratic relationship with temperature.Synthesis. Our results show that environmental conditions not only filter non‐native species depending on physiological tolerances but may also influence the importance of invasion mechanisms. The alpine treeline ecotones are an early indicator of vegetation's response to changes in climate, and the advancement of diffuse treeline ecotones has been associated with mean annual warming temperatures. However, the knowledge of how tree demographic size, age and population distribution, and regeneration decrease with increasing elevation and mean annual temperature remain fragmentary in Bhutan. There was no explanation of how treelines migrate in response to the climate. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to investigate tree demographic size and age and population distribution, as well as the regeneration expansion of treeline ecotones of Abies densa trees in response to climate change. Demographic data from thirty transect bands from treeline ecotones and reconstructed mean annual temperatures from tree-rings were used. Regression analysis was used to establish a relationship between elevation/temperature and demographic tree size and age, as well as to determine recruitment frequency distributions and whether these could be driven by climate change. The tree demography indicated that the treeline ecotone in our sampling site is temperature limited. Hence, cooler temperatures at higher elevations should drive decreases in basal diameter, age and recruitment frequencies. From the dendroecological analysis, the diffuse treeline ecotones appear to be climbing on average 1.00 m per year in Northern Bhutan. We also found that the recruitment frequency has increased over recent years (1850–2017), as temperatures continue to rise. The thermal treeline ecotones will be likely to serve as a line of bioclimatic reference against which other zones of bioclimate can be defined. With documented responses of treeline ecotones toward mean annual temperatures, the expectation is that additional warming will continue to influence regeneration expansion in the future. This dynamic response of treeline ecotones towards the climate acts as an indicator of climate change. Information about climbing treelines and altered ecotones should be a vital part of the material for decision makers to consider, to assess impacts and threats to Himalayan alpine biota. Climate warming in the Russian Arctic over the past 40 years shows a variety of patterns at different locations and time periods. In the second half of the 20th century, the maximum rates of warming were characteristic of the subarctic permafrost regions of Russia. But in the 21st century, the locations of the greatest rates of climate warming moved to the Arctic zone of Russia. It was one of the reasons for a sharp increase in permafrost temperatures, an increase in the depth of seasonal thaw, and the formation of closed taliks. It was found that as a result of climate change, the differences in permafrost temperatures between different cryogenic landscapes in the area of continuous and discontinuous permafrost distribution have decreased, and in the area of sporadic permafrost distribution are now practically absent. The thermal regime of the ground shows dramatic changes everywhere with a pronounced reduction in the depth of zero annual amplitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The small‐island effect (SIE) is an important pattern in the research fields of island biogeography and biodiversity science. Amphibians and reptiles, while playing important roles in ecosystems, are experiencing global declines. However, to date, no study has explicitly examined the generality and processes underlying the SIE in amphibians and reptiles. Here, we complied 105 global data sets to systematically evaluate the prevalence and underlying factors determining the occurrence of SIEs, area threshold (T) and difference in area threshold (ΔT) between amphibians and reptiles. We applied 27 species–area relationship (SAR) models to the 105 global data sets of amphibians and reptiles to test for the existence of SIEs. We obtained 12 island characteristics, 5 environmental variables, 2 anthropogenic influence variables and 8 species traits that are linked to species survival, which were then tested separately and in combination to examine their roles in determining the occurrence of SIEs, area threshold and ΔT between amphibians and reptiles. We found SIEs in 20 out of 45 (44%) archipelagos for amphibians and 35 out of 60 (58%) archipelagos for reptiles. The occurrence of SIEs was affected by the number of islands, mean annual precipitation and minimum range size for amphibians, whereas only by the number of islands for reptiles. Area thresholds of amphibians were significantly higher than those of reptiles within the same true island system. Area thresholds were affected by mean island area and mean annual temperature for amphibians, whereas by mean island area, temperature seasonality and minimum range size for reptiles. ΔT was affected only by island type. Our study demonstrates that the determinants of the occurrence of SIEs and area thresholds comprised both extrinsic and intrinsic variables but differed substantially between amphibians and reptiles. Background: Forecasts of climate change impacts on biodiversity often assume that the current geographical distributions of species match their niche optima. However, empirical evidence has challenged this assumption, suggesting a mismatch. We examine whether the mismatch is related to functional traits along temperature or precipitation gradients. Methods: The observed distributions of 32 tree species in northeast China were evaluated to test this mismatch. Bayesian models were used to estimate the climatic niche optima, i.e. the habitats where the highest species growth and density can be expected. The mismatch is defined as the difference between the actual species occurrence in an assumed niche optimum and the habitat with the highest probability of species occurrence. Species’ functional traits were used to explore the mechanisms that may have caused the mismatches. Results: Contrasting these climatic niche optima with the observed species distributions, we found that the distribution–niche optima mismatch had high variability among species based on temperature and precipitation gradients. However, these mismatches depended on functional traits associated with competition and migration lags only in temperature gradients. Conclusions: We conclude that more relevant research is needed in the future to quantify the mismatch between species distribution and climatic niche optima, which may be crucial for future designs of forested landscapes, species conservation and dynamic forecasting of biodiversity under expected climate change. Abstract Mean annual temperature (MAT) is an influential climate factor affecting the bioavailability of growth‐limiting nutrients nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). In tropical montane wet forests, warmer MAT drives higher N bioavailability, while patterns of P availability are inconsistent across MAT. Two important nutrient acquisition strategies, fine root proliferation into bulk soil and root association with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, are dependent on C availability to the plant via primary production. The case study presented here tests whether variation in bulk soil N bioavailability across a tropical montane wet forest elevation gradient (5.2°C MAT range) influences (a) morphology fine root proliferation into soil patches with elevated N, P, and N+P relative to background soil and (b) arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) colonization of fine roots in patches. We created a fully factorial fertilized root ingrowth core design (N, P, N+P, unfertilized control) representing soil patches with elevated N and P bioavailability relative to background bulk soil. Our results show that percent AMF colonization of roots increased with MAT (r2 = .19, p = .004), but did not respond to fertilization treatments. Fine root length (FRL), a proxy for root foraging, increased with MAT in N+P‐fertilized patches only (p = .02), while other fine root morphological parameters did not respond to the gradient or fertilized patches. We conclude that in N‐rich, fine root elongation into areas with elevated N and P declines while AMF abundance increases with MAT. These results indicate a tradeoff between P acquisition strategies occurring with changing N bioavailability, which may be influenced by higher C availability with warmer MAT.

Abstract Although belowground biomass (BGB) plays an important role in global cycling, the storage of BGB and climatic effects on it are remaining unclear. With data from 49 sites, we aimed to investigate BGB and its climatic controls in alpine shrublands in the Tibetan Plateau. Our study showed that the BGB (both grass‐layer and shrub‐layer biomass) storage in the alpine shrublands was 67.24 Tg, and the mean BGB density and shrublands area were 1,567.38 g/m2 and 4.29 × 104 km2, respectively. Shrub layer had a larger BGB stock and accounted for 66% of total BGB this area, while only 34% was accumulated in the grass layer. BGB of the grass layer in the Tibetan Plateau shrublands was larger than that of Tibetan alpine grasslands, indicating that shrubland ecosystem played a critical importance role in carbon cycle on the Tibetan Plateau. The BGB in the grass layer and shrub layer demonstrated different correlations with climatic factors. Abstract Background Fagus sylvatica forms the treeline across the Apennines mountain range, with an average elevation of 1589 m a.s.l. Previous studies evidenced that the current position of the treeline in the Apennines is heavily depressed as a result of a complex interaction between climatic factors and the past human pressure. In this study we correlated treeline elevation in the fifteen major mountain groups in the Apennines with selected climatic, geomorphological, and human disturbance variables in order to investigate in detail the site-specific features affecting the current treeline distribution. Results Treeline elevation was lowest in the North Italy (Apuan Alps), while the highest treeline was found in Central Italy (Simbruini). An absolute maximum treeline elevation of F. sylvatica exceeding 2000 m a.s.l. was found on 13 mountain peaks in Central and Southern Italy. Noteworthy, treeline elevation was largely lower on warmer south-facing slopes compared to northern slopes, with values several hundred meters lower in the Gran Sasso and Velino-Sirente. Although the causes of this pattern are still unknown, we argue that treeline elevation on south-facing slopes may be limited by the combination of climatic constraints (i.e. summer drought) and human disturbance. Evidence of a pervasive anthropogenic effect depressing treeline elevation was found in the North (Apuan Alps) Central (Gran Sasso, Velino-Sirente, Sibillini) and Southern part of Apennines (Pollino). By contrast, treeline elevation of the Laga, Simbruini, and Orsomarso mountain groups appears less affected by past anthropogenic disturbance. Finally, we recorded in the several mountain groups (i.e. Majella, Marsicani and Pollino) the coexistence of very depressed treelines just a few kilometers away from much higher treelines, among the highest ever recorded for F. sylvatica. Conclusions Finally, we argue that F. sylvatica treeline across the Apennines is locally shaped both by the interaction of low temperatures experienced by the species in its earliest life stages in snow-free open spaces with summer soil water depletion and human disturbance.

The composition of forest soil organic matter is an important part of the global carbon cycle, which is effective by temperature and moisture. As we all know, the temperature and moisture in the low-latitude plateau regions are very sensitive to changes in latitude and altitude. However, the composition of soil organic matter response to changes in latitude and altitude in the low-latitude plateau regions is unknown. In this study, the effects of latitude (21–29° N) and altitude (500–4000 m) on soil organic carbon (SOC) and humic acid carbon (HAC), fulvic acid carbon (FAC), and humin carbon (HMC) in forest surface soil (0–10 cm) were investigated. The results showed that the contents of soil organic carbon and humus increased with the increase in altitude and latitude. The effect of altitude on the composition of organic matter was significant only at 23° N to 25° N. The composition of organic matter is not only regulated by mean annual temperature (MAT) and soil moisture content (SMC) but also affected by soil pH, carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N), and powder. The soil surface layer (0–10 cm) carbon sequestration capacity in high-latitude and high-altitude areas is stronger than that in low-latitude and low-altitude areas. As a consequence, in today’s response to global climate change, the high carbon sequestration capacity of high latitude and high altitude areas should be given attention and protection.

1. Traits differentially adapt plant species to particular conditions generating compositional shifts along environmental gradients. As a result, community-scale trait values show concomitant shifts, termed trait-environment relationships. Trait-environment relationships are often assessed by evaluating community-weighted mean (CWM) traits observed along environmental gradients. Regression-based approaches (CWMr) assume that local communities exhibit traits centred at a single optimum value and that traits do not covary meaningfully. Evidence suggests that the shape of trait-abundance relationships can vary widely along environmental gradients--reflecting complex interactions--and traits are usually interrelated. We used a model that accounts for these factors to explore trait-environment relationships in herbaceous forest plant communities in Wisconsin (USA). 2. We built a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) to analyse how abundances of 185 species distributed among 189 forested sites vary in response to four functional traits (vegetative height--VH, leaf size--LS, leaf mass per area--LMA and leaf carbon content), six environmental variables describing overstorey, soil and climate conditions, and their interactions. The GLMM allowed us to assess the nature and relative strength of the resulting 24 trait-environment relationships. We also compared results between GLMM and CWMr to explore how conclusions differ between approaches. 3. The GLMM identified five significant trait-environment relationships that together explain ~40% of variation in species abundances across sites. Temperature appeared as a key environmental driver, with warmer and more seasonal sites favouring taller plants. Soil texture and temperature seasonality affected LS and LMA; seasonality effects on LS and LMA were nonlinear, declining at more seasonal sites. Although often assumed for CWMr, only some traits under certain conditions had centred optimum trait-abundance relationships. CWMr more liberally identified (13) trait-environment relationships as significant but failed to detect the temperature seasonality-LMA relationship identified by the GLMM. 4. Synthesis. Although GLMM represents a more methodologically complex approach than CWMr, it identified a reduced set of trait-environment relationships still capable of accounting for the responses of forest understorey herbs to environmental gradients. It also identified separate effects of mean and seasonal temperature on LMA that appear important in these forests, generating useful insights and supporting broader application of GLMM approach to understand trait-environment relationships. The Himalayan region is likely particularly exposed to climate change indicated by the high regional rate of change. The number of high-resolution, well-calibrated, and long-term paleoclimate reconstructions are however regrettably few, to set this change in a longer-term context. The dendroclimatic reconstructions over Himalaya that do exist have only reconstructed summer season temperatures, and rarely or never attempted to reconstruct mean annual temperatures. The paucity of long meteorological records is a matter of concern when developing chronologies of climate sensitive tree-ring data in Bhutan, but the chronologies would theoretically be of high potential for extending short meteorological records back in time using trees in high-elevation ecotones. The objectives of this study were to explore dendroclimatic signals in tree-ring width chronologies of Abies densa growing in these extreme ecotones and to reconstruct, if possible, annual temperatures over Northern Bhutan. A point-by-point regression analysis revealed that the regional composite chronology was significantly and positively correlated with temperatures of all months of the current year, i.e., January to December. The chronology was highly correlated with annual temperatures (calibration period R = 0.67 and validation period R = 0.50; p < 0.001) allowing a reconstruction of temperature over Northern Bhutan (NB-TEMR). The NB-TEMR reveals some common variations with summer temperature reconstructions of the Northern Hemisphere as well as the Himalayan region, particularly w.r.t to the recent warming trend. The reconstruction covers the period of 1765 to 2017. This reconstruction reveals a warming trend since 1850 with higher rates of warming 1935 to 2017, but with a pause around 1940–1970. The warming is consistent with reduced volcanic activity and increase of greenhouse gases. We anticipate that our new reconstruction of annual mean temperature could be an important contribution for future climate change studies and assessments of climate models.

Larix gemelinii is an important tree species in the Great Khingan Mountains in Northeast China with a high economic and ecological value for its role in carbon sequestration and as a source of lumber and nuts. However, the ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungal diversity and community composition of this tree remain largely undefined. We examined EM fungal communities associated with L. gemelinii from three sites in the Great Khingan Mountains using Illumina Miseq to sequence the rDNA ITS2 region and evaluated the impact of spatial, soil, and climatic variables on the EM fungal community. A total of 122 EM fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified from 21 pooled-root samples, and the dominant EM fungal lineages were/tricholoma,/tomentella-thelephora,/suillus-rhizopogon, and/piloderma. A high proportion of unique EM fungal OTUs were present; some abundant OTUs largely restricted to specific sites. EM fungal richness and community assembly were significantly correlated with spatial distance and climatic and soil variables, with mean annual temperature being the most important predictor for fungal richness and geographic distance as the largest determinant for community turnover. Our findings indicate that L. gemelinii has a rich and distinctive EM fungal community contributing to our understanding of the montane EM fungal community structure from the perspective of a single host plant that has not been previously reported. Climate warming in the Russian Arctic over the past 40 years shows a variety of patterns at different locations and time periods. In the second half of the 20th century, the maximum rates of warming were characteristic of the subarctic permafrost regions of Russia. But in the 21st century, the locations of the greatest rates of climate warming moved to the Arctic zone of Russia. It was one of the reasons for a sharp increase in permafrost temperatures, an increase in the depth of seasonal thaw, and the formation of closed taliks. It was found that as a result of climate change, the differences in permafrost temperatures between different cryogenic landscapes in the area of continuous and discontinuous permafrost distribution have decreased, and in the area of sporadic permafrost distribution are now practically absent. The thermal regime of the ground shows dramatic changes everywhere with a pronounced reduction in the depth of zero annual amplitude.

Despite growing understanding of how rising temperatures affect carbon cycling, the impact of long-term and whole forest warming on the suite of essential and potentially limiting nutrients remains understudied, particularly for elements other than N and P. Whole ecosystem warming experiments are limited, environmental gradients are often confounded by variation in factors other than temperature, and few studies have been conducted in the tropics. We examined litterfall, live foliar nutrient content, foliar nutrient resorption efficiency (NRE), nutrient return, and foliar nutrient use efficiency (NUE) of total litterfall and live foliage of two dominant trees to test hypotheses about how increasing mean annual temperature (MAT) impacts the availability and ecological stoichiometry of C, N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Zn, and Cu in tropical montane wet forests located along a 5.2°C gradient in Hawaii. Live foliage responded to increasing MAT with increased N and K concentrations, decreased C and Mn concentrations, and no detectable change in P concentration or in foliar NRE. Increases in MAT increased nutrient return via litterfall for N, K, Mg, and Zn and foliar NUE for Mn and Cu, while decreasing nutrient return for Cu and foliar NUE for K. The N:P of litterfall and live foliage increased with MAT, while there was no detectable effect of MAT on C:P. The ratio of live foliar N or P to base cations and micronutrients was variable across elements and species. Increased MAT resulted in declining N:K and P:K for one species, while only P:K declined for the other. N:Ca and N:Mn increased with MAT for both species, while N:Mg increased for one and P:Mn increased for the other species. Overall, results from this study suggest that rising MAT in tropical montane wet forest: (i) increases plant productivity and the cycling and availability of N, K, Mg, and Zn; (ii) decreases the cycling and availability of Mn and Cu; (iii) has little direct effect on P, Ca or Fe; and (iv) affects ecological stoichiometry in ways that may exacerbate P–as well as other base cation and micronutrient – limitations to tropical montane forest productivity.

Mean annual temperature (MAT) is an influential climate factor affecting the bioavailability of growth‐limiting nutrients nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). In tropical montane wet forests, warmer MAT drives higher N bioavailability, while patterns of P availability are inconsistent across MAT. Two important nutrient acquisition strategies, fine root proliferation into bulk soil and root association with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, are dependent on C availability to the plant via primary production. The case study presented here tests whether variation in bulk soil N bioavailability across a tropical montane wet forest elevation gradient (5.2°C MAT range) influences (a) morphology fine root proliferation into soil patches with elevated N, P, and N+P relative to background soil and (b) arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) colonization of fine roots in patches. An understanding of local and regional climate trends is essential to investigate the remarkable angiosperm radiation that happened during the Albian–Cenomanian transition. However, many of the inland depositional environments pioneered by the first modern angiosperms are poorly represented in the fossil record. Eastern Canada, in particular, has a very poor Mesozoic record. In this paper, we present the first multivariate palaeoclimate analysis (CLAMP) for the environment of a geologically isolated woody dicot dominated flora found in the Redmond no.1 mine, Labrador, near Schefferville, with an estimated Cenomanian age. It reveals that the Redmond flora would have experienced a mean annual temperature of 15.1 ± 2.1°C, one of the coolest recorded for North America at this time. These results confer the Redmond no.1 site a warm temperate and fully humid climate with a hot summer, in accordance with previous qualitative palaeoclimate estimates. This flora fits smoothly into palaeolatitudinal MAT gradients that use other Cenomanian‐estimated North American floras. Despite an inland setting, the climate analysis does not recover a significantly higher degree of seasonality than the sites to which it is compared, which agrees with established climate equability models for the Cretaceous and Palaeogene. This study also introduces 15 new morphotypes discovered in recent fieldwork. The eventual description of the species they represent may refine our dating estimates for the Redmond Formation. A greater understanding of the depositional environment and of the natural history of these angiosperms is required to improve this community's characterization, along with estimates from other proxies. Grassland is the important component of the terrestrial ecosystems. Estimating net primary productivity (NPP) of grassland ecosystem has been a central focus in global climate change researches. To simulate the grassland NPP in southern China, we built a new climate productivity model, and validated the model with the measured data from different years in the past. The results showed that there was a logarithmic correlation between the grassland NPP and the mean annual temperature, and there was a linear positive correlation between the grassland NPP and the annual precipitation in southern China. Latitudinal patterns in herbivory are widely debated. A recent publication (Zhang et al., Journal of Ecology, 104, 2016: 1089-1095) concluded that the absolute levels of herbivory (hypothesis 1), as well as latitudinal and climatic gradients in herbivory (hypothesis 2), differ between the hemispheres., Zhang et al. (2016), among others, used a measure of plant damage from Moles & Westoby ( Oikos, 90, 2000: 517-524) that greatly overestimates insect herbivory, and they did not include the main effect of hemisphere in their linear model that explored the relationship between herbivory and latitude. After correction of the values extracted from Moles & Westoby (2000), none of several statistical models that tested both hypotheses simultaneously (i.e. including hemisphere, latitude/climate and their interaction) confirmed the existence of statistically significant differences in the patterns of insect herbivory between the hemispheres., Synthesis. The current level of knowledge does not provide grounds to conclude that hemispheric asymmetries exist either in the average levels of insect herbivory or in the relationships between herbivory and latitude or climate. Soil organic C storage in mountain areas is highly heterogeneous, mainly as a result of local-scale variability in the soil environment and microclimate. The aims of the present study were to estimate soil organic carbon density (SOCD) and stocks in leptosol on morainic deposits of high-altitude grasslands of the Lake Plateau of Mt. Durmitor National Park in Montenegro, and determine the soil variables that can be used as factors to determine the SOCD at 28 soil profiles. Our results indicated that SOC storage in the top 40 cm of the alpine grasslands were estimated at 560 414.86 t C, or 152.66 t•ha-1, with an average density of 15.27 kg•m-2. The soil organic carbon density increased significantly with soil moisture, clay and silt content, but only moderately with mean annual temperature. In conjunction, these variables could explain approximately 51% of the total variation in SOC density.

Leaf stable carbon isotope (δ13C) composition provides comprehensive insight into plant carbon cycles and water use efficiency and has also been widely used to evaluate the response of plants to environmental change. In the present study, leaf δ13C was analyzed in samples of Caragana microphylla Lam., C. liouana Zhao, and C. korshinskii Kom. from 38 populations. These species provide great environmental benefits and economic value and are distributed east to west continuously across northern China. We studied the relationship of δ13C to altitude, mean annual precipitation (MAP), mean annual temperature (MAT), mean annual relative humidity (RH), leaf nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) concentrations to examine the patterns and controls of leaf δ13C variation in each species. Results indicated that, across the three species, leaf δ13C significantly decreased with MAP, RH, and leaf N and P concentrations, while it increased with altitude and MAT. However, patterns and environmental controls of leaf δ13C varied proportionally with species. C. korshinskii was mainly controlled by MAP and leaf N concentration, C. liouana was controlled by both MAT and MAP, and C. microphylla was mainly controlled by MAT. Further analysis indicated significant differences in leaf δ13C between species, which tended to increase from C. microphylla to C. korshinskii. Overall, these results suggest that the three Caragana species may respond differently to future climate change due to different controlling factors on leaf δ13C variation, as well as differentiation in water use efficiency, which likely contributes to the geographical distribution of these species.

Aim The individual effects of climate and soil properties on functional trait distributions have become increasingly clear with recent syntheses of large datasets. However, the distribution of traits in a given climate may depend on the fertility of the soil. Our aim was to quantify how soil-climate interactions explain community-level variation in functional traits from every plant organ to improve predictions of plant community responses to environmental change. Location Temperate forests throughout New Zealand. Methods We measured traits of foliar, stem, root and reproductive tissue for 64 species and calculated abundance-weighted mean trait values on 324 forest plots. Multiple linear regression was used to model the variation in each of the traits as functions of mean annual temperature (MAT), vapour pressure deficit (VPD), soil pH, soil total phosphorus (P) and their interactions. Results Soil-climate interactions explained significant variation in functional traits. For example, specific leaf area (SLA) was highest in high-P soil within a wet and warm climate; however, strong interactions indicate that SLA was lowest in wet and warm climates in low-P soil. Root tissue density was lowest in warm climates and high-P soil, but it was high in warm climates and low-P soil and in cold climates and high-P soil. According to model predictions, the largest potential responses of vegetation to warming may occur in fertile and wet environments. Main conclusions Pervasive soil-climate interactions demonstrate that interpreting simple bivariate relationships between traits and climate must be done with caution because the adaptive value of traits in a given climate depends on the fertility of the soil. Predictions of vegetation responses to climate change will improve significantly by incorporating local-scale soil properties into modelling frameworks. Parenchyma is an important tissue in secondary xylem of seed plants, with functions ranging from storage to defence and with effects on the physical and mechanical properties of wood. Currently, we lack a large-scale quantitative analysis of ray parenchyma ( RP) and axial parenchyma ( AP) tissue fractions., Here, we use data from the literature on AP and RP fractions to investigate the potential relationships of climate and growth form with total ray and axial parenchyma fractions ( RAP)., We found a 29-fold variation in RAP fraction, which was more strongly related to temperature than with precipitation. Stem succulents had the highest RAP values (mean ± SD: 70.2 ± 22.0%), followed by lianas (50.1 ± 16.3%), angiosperm trees and shrubs (26.3 ± 12.4%), and conifers (7.6 ± 2.6%). Differences in RAP fraction between temperate and tropical angiosperm trees (21.1 ± 7.9% vs 36.2 ± 13.4%, respectively) are due to differences in the AP fraction, which is typically three times higher in tropical than in temperate trees, but not in RP fraction., Our results illustrate that both temperature and growth form are important drivers of RAP fractions. • The evolution of lignified xylem allowed for the efficient transport of water under tension, but also exposed the vascular network to the risk of gas emboli and the spread of gas between xylem conduits, thus impeding sap transport to the leaves. A well-known hypothesis proposes that the safety of xylem (its ability to resist embolism formation and spread) should trade off against xylem efficiency (its capacity to transport water). • We tested this safety-efficiency hypothesis in branch xylem across 335 angiosperm and 89 gymnosperm species. Safety was considered at three levels: the xylem water potentials where 12%, 50% and 88% of maximal conductivity are lost. • Although correlations between safety and efficiency were weak (r² < 0.086), no species had high efficiency and high safety, supporting the idea for a safety-efficiency tradeoff. However, many species had low efficiency and low safety. Species with low efficiency and low safety were weakly associated (r² < 0.02 in most cases) with higher wood density, lower leaf- to sapwood- area and shorter stature. • There appears to be no persuasive explanation for the considerable number of species with both low efficiency and low safety. This study was aimed at to evaluate the process of urbanization and its possible correlation with mean annual temperature (MAT) in metropolitan area of Lahore for the last fifty years (1962-2012). Some parameters of urbanization were selected i.e. increase in built-up land, number of factories, number of vehicles, and reduction in vegetation cover. In order to analyze degree of correlation among mean annual temperature (MAT) and each parameter, bivariate Pearson correlation analysis was carried out. Results showed slight decrease in mean maximum temperature and considerable increase in mean minimum temperature of Lahore. It leads to linear progression towards decrement in mean annual temperature mainly due to rapid paced urbanization over the past in Lahore metropolitan area. Reduction in vegetation cover and increase in built-up area are identified as major contributors among all selected multifarious human and natural factors. Possible solution to overcome future change in temperature could be afforestation, use of environmental friendly transportation, increase in urban green spaces and mass media campaign to make people realized about the adverse effects of rise in temperature due to anthropogenic activities. The highlighted results in present research study provided guidelines to policy makers, urban planners and city managers of Lahore for better urban planning strategies in years to come. At the beginning of the article, there is presented the model of the Experimental Stand DRETM I created using the software SoilVision on the basis of experimental stand really built in scale 1:1. The core of the article is aimed at monitoring the impact of various factors (change in moisture content of the protective layer, initial temperature of structural layers, frost index, mean annual temperature, course and length of freezing ...) to the change of frost depth of subgrade structure. The conclusion focuses on the assessment of the impacts and recommendations of the most relevant input parameters for further modelling, which should lead in the future to new forms of nomograms for the proposal of a protective layer on various factors of non-transport load. The question whether the European wildcat, adapted to cooler climate than other small to medium sized felids, shows changes in body mass or size in response to climate change as indicated for other animals is addressed. The literature yielded body mass data of individual specimens covering the time span from about 1860 to 1960. Also the records of collections were accessed to record weight and body length. These mainly cover the time after 1950. Additionally, three cranial measures, gsl, cbl and zw were measured as indicators of size in the collections representing Germany and Slovakia. Museum records of weight from the last 60 years alone do not show a statistically significant change over time or mean annual temperature. But they do so for body length. The combined data from literature and collections from both regions show a statistically significant decrease in weight over time. As the samples from the literature and museum records represent different time periods, prior to and after 1950, it is difficult to decide if the literature data might be unrealistically high or if there was a real decrease in weight. The German and Slovakian samples differ statistically in the studied parameters, which complicates the picture. Overall the indications of changes in size of wildcats with time or mean annual temperature are not consistent in the studied regions and therefore difficult to assess. Even though there is ample material and substantial literature the collected specimens in the collections do mainly represent relatively short time periods and the available data on weight are also unevenly distributed in time. Soil pH is an essential indicator for assessing soil quality and soil health. In this study, based on the Chinese farmland soil survey dataset and meteorological dataset, the spatial distribution characteristics of soil pH in coastal eastern China were analyzed using kriging interpolation. The relationships between hydrothermal conditions and soil pH were explored using regression analysis with mean annual precipitation (MAP), mean annual temperature (MAT), the ratio of precipitation to temperature (P/T), and the product of precipitation and temperature (P*T) as the main explanatory variables. Based on this, a model that can rapidly estimate soil pH was established. The results showed that: (a) The spatial heterogeneity of soil pH in coastal eastern China was obvious, with the values gradually decreasing from north to south, ranging from 4.5 to 8.5; (b) soil pH was significantly correlated with all explanatory variables at the 0.01 level. In general, MAP was the main factor affecting soil pH ( r = -0.7244), followed by P/T ( r = -0.6007). In the regions with MAP < 800 mm, soil pH was negatively correlated with MAP ( r = -0.4631) and P/T ( r = -0.7041), respectively, and positively correlated with MAT ( r = 0.6093) and P*T ( r = 0.3951), respectively. In the regions with MAP > 800 mm, soil pH was negatively correlated with MAP ( r = -0.6651), MAT ( r = -0.5047), P/T ( r = -0.3268), and P*T ( r = -0.5808), respectively. (c) The estimation model of soil pH was: y = 23.4572 - 6.3930 × lgMAP + 0.1312 × MAT. It has been verified to have a high accuracy ( r = 0.7743, p < 0.01). The mean error, the mean absolute error, and the root mean square error were 0.0450, 0.5300, and 0.7193, respectively. It provides a new path for rapid estimation of the regional soil pH, which is important for improving the management of agricultural production and slowing down soil degradation.
