Desmoplasia in breast cancer leads to heterogeneity in physical properties of the tissue, resulting in disparities in drug delivery and treatment efficacy among patients, thus contributing to high disease mortality. Personalized in vitro breast cancer models hold great promise for high‐throughput testing of therapeutic strategies to normalize the aberrant microenvironment in a patient‐specific manner. Here, tumoroids assembled from breast cancer cell lines (MCF7, SKBR3, and MDA‐MB‐468) and patient‐derived breast tumor cells (TCs) cultured in microphysiological systems including perfusable microvasculature reproduce key aspects of stromal and vascular dysfunction causing impaired drug delivery. Models containing SKBR3 and MDA‐MB‐468 tumoroids show higher stromal hyaluronic acid (HA) deposition, vascular permeability, interstitial fluid pressure (IFP), and degradation of vascular HA relative to models containing MCF7 tumoroids or models without tumoroids. Interleukin 8 (IL8) secretion is found responsible for vascular dysfunction and loss of vascular HA. Interventions targeting IL8 or stromal HA normalize vascular permeability, perfusion, and IFP, and ultimately enhance drug delivery and TC death in response to perfusion with trastuzumab and cetuximab. Similar responses are observed in patient‐derived models. These microphysiological systems can thus be personalized by using patient‐derived cells and can be applied to discover new molecular therapies for the normalization of the tumor microenvironment. Background: Infusion testing is an established method for assessing CSF resistance in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). To what extent the increased resistance is related to the glymphatic system is an open question. Here we introduce a computational model that includes the glymphatic system and enables us to determine the importance of (1) brain geometry, (2) intracranial pressure, and (3) physiological parameters on the outcome of and response to an infusion test. Methods: We implemented a seven-compartment multiple network porous medium model with subject specific geometries from MR images using the finite element library FEniCS. The model consists of the arterial, capillary and venous blood vessels, their corresponding perivascular spaces, and the extracellular space (ECS). Both subject specific brain geometries and subject specific infusion tests were used in the modeling of both healthy adults and iNPH patients. Furthermore, we performed a systematic study of the effect of variations in model parameters. Results: Both the iNPH group and the control group reached a similar steady state solution when subject specific geometries under identical boundary conditions was used in simulation. The difference in terms of average fluid pressure and velocity between the iNPH and control groups, was found to be less than 6% during all stages of infusion in all compartments. With subject specific boundary conditions, the largest computed difference was a 75% greater fluid speed in the arterial perivascular space (PVS) in the iNPH group compared to the control group. Changes to material parameters changed fluid speeds by several orders of magnitude in some scenarios. A considerable amount of the CSF pass through the glymphatic pathway in our models during infusion, i.e., 28% and 38% in the healthy and iNPH patients, respectively. Conclusions: Using computational models, we have found the relative importance of subject specific geometries to be less important than individual differences in resistance as measured with infusion tests and model parameters such as permeability, in determining the computed pressure and flow during infusion. Model parameters are uncertain, but certain variations have large impact on the simulation results. The complexity of petroleum phases in deep formations plays an important role in the evaluation of hydrocarbon resources. Pressure is considered to have a positive impact on the preservation of liquid oils, yet direct evidence for this phenomenon is lacking in the case of deep reservoirs due to late destruction. Here, we present fluid-inclusion assemblages from a deep reservoir in the Tazhong area of the Tarim Basin, northwestern China, which formed as a direct consequence of fluid pressure evolution. Based on thermodynamic measurements and simulations of the coexisting aqueous and petroleum inclusions in these assemblages, the history of petroleum activities was reconstructed. Our results show that all analyzed fluid-inclusion assemblages demonstrated variable pressure conditions in different charging stages, ranging from hydrostatic to overpressure (a pressure coefficient of up to 1.49). Sequential petroleum charging and partial oil cracking may have been the main contributors to overpressure. By comparing the phases of petroleum and fluid pressures in the two wells, ZS1 and ZS5, it can be inferred that overpressure inhibits oil cracking. Thus, overpressure exerts an important influence on the preservation of liquid hydrocarbon under high temperatures. Trillions of cubic meters of gas reserve have been found in the Sinian Dengying carbonate reservoirs with normal pressure in the central Sichuan Basin, while no industrial gas reservoir have been detected in the Sinian Dengying reservoir with normal pressure in the eastern Sichuan Basin. The pore fluid pressure of gas reservoir is usually closely related to total gas content. To investigate the pore fluid pressure evolution and its implication for gas reserve preservation in the Sinian Dengying reservoir of the central and eastern Sichuan Basin, we conducted a comprehensive analysis including fluid inclusion petrography, microthermometry and Raman spectroscopy. The timings of gas inclusions captured in the central and eastern Sichuan Basin occurred from 175 to 92 Ma and 191 to 183 Ma, respectively. The presence of two‐phase vapour‐solid bitumen inclusions with similar phase proportions in a single fluid inclusion assemblage of fluorite provides direct evidence of in situ oil cracking to gas. The widespread solid bitumen from the Sinian Dengying reservoir in the central Sichuan Basin indicates the existence of massive oil cracking, which results in the formation of overpressure in the reservoir. Pore fluid pressure evolution of the Sinian Dengying reservoir of the central Sichuan Basin experiences normal pressure stage (200–155 Ma), overpressure development stage (155–90 Ma) and overpressure release stage (90–0 Ma). The maximum pore fluid pressure and its corresponding pressure coefficient of the Sinian Dengying reservoir of the central Sichuan Basin are approximately 141.4 MPa and 1.95, respectively. The overpressure development stage reflects the processes of oil cracking and gas accumulation, and the overpressure release stage reflects the dissipation of some natural gas in the Sinian Dengying reservoir of the central Sichuan Basin. The pore fluid pressure of the Sinian Dengying reservoir in the eastern Sichuan Basin has maintained at normal pressure since 200 Ma, indicating that the gas reservoir was small during the oil cracking stage and natural gas completely leaked due to tectonic uplift. Downward flow of surface-derived water deep into the upper crust is investigated using 2-D coupled hydrothermal numerical models. In the models, downward flow is driven by either topographic gradients or seismic pumping, while it is facilitated by large episodic variations in fault permeability, intended to mimic fracturing and healing on a fault over repeated seismic cycles. The models show that both forcing scenarios are equally capable of driving surface-derived fluid to the base of faults at 10 km depth in several tens of thousands of years under certain conditions. Downward flow of cold fluid occurs almost exclusively during and shortly after earthquakes, while during the remaining portion of the seismic cycle fluids remain relatively stationary while they undergo thermal relaxation (i.e. heating). Rapid downward flow is favoured by a large coseismic permeability, long permeability healing timescale and large coseismic dilatancy or high topographic relief above the fault at the surface. However, downward fluid flow is completely inhibited if fluid pressures exceeds the hydrostatic gradient, even by modest amounts, which suggests that deep fluid infiltration is unlikely to occur in every region. Moderate magnitude earthquakes and seismic sequences frequently develop on fault systems, but whether they are linked to future major ruptures is always ambiguous. In this study, we investigated a seismic sequence that has developed within a portion of the stretching region of the Apennines in Italy where moderate to large earthquakes are likely to occur. We captured a total of 2039 aftershocks of the 2023 September 18, M w 4.9 earthquake occurred during the first week, by using machine-learning (ML) based algorithms. Aftershocks align on two 5–7 km long parallel faults, from a length that exceeds what is expected from the main shock magnitude. The segments are ramping at about 6 km depth on closely spaced N100 striking 70 N dipping planes, at a distance of some kilometres from the main shock hypocentre. Our results indicate that even moderate magnitude events trigger seismicity on a spread set of fault segments around the main shock hypocentre, revealing processes of interaction within the crustal layer. The possibility that larger earthquakes develop during seismicity spread is favoured by pore pressure diffusion, in relation with the closeness to criticality of fault segments. Based on the very rapid activation of seismicity on the entire system and a back-front signal from the hypocentre of the main event, we infer that fluid pressure, initially high within the crustal layer, rapidly dropped after the main shock. Our study reinforces the importance of timely extracting information on fault geometry and seismicity distribution on faults. We investigated stress drops during an earthquake swarm in northeastern Noto Peninsula, central Japan, which is characterized by ongoing seismic activity in four clusters. We focused on the spatiotemporal distribution of the static stress drop and its relationship with the source faults of the earthquake swarm. Employing the empirical Green's function method, we estimated static stress drops for 90 earthquakes of MJMA 3.0–5.4. We obtained logarithmic mean stress drops of 13 MPa and 19 MPa from P-wave and S-wave analyses, respectively, which were typical values for crustal earthquakes. We comprehensively analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution of static stress drops in the northern cluster due to the abundance of available data and clarity of fault structures there. We observed larger static stress drops for earthquakes along shallow portions of the source faults, as defined by the hypocentral distribution during a given period. Conversely, we observed smaller static stress drops for earthquakes at medial parts along the faults. These results suggest higher fault strength at shallower parts along the faults and reduced fault strength at medial parts. We attribute the high fault strength at shallow parts to low pore fluid pressure after only limited fluid diffusion near the fault terminus. In contrast, we attribute the reduction in fault strength at medial parts to high pore fluid pressure within the fault following penetration by migrating fluids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The traditional specific storage coefficient (Ss) was defined under two assumptions. One is that aquifer rock deforms only in the vertical direction, and the other is that the average rock stress remains unchanged. Consequently, Ss is irrelevant to the shear modulus of rock (G). In this paper, the Biot theory is used to derive a new specific storage coefficient (Ss∗) with the natural deformation of rock. Ss∗ appears to be relevant to G. Compressed glass beads and Berea sandstone are used for illustration. At frequencies lower than 10 kHz, the equation of groundwater flow with Ss∗ yields the same phase velocity and quality factor as the Biot theory, and therefore, it is capable of accurately predicting fluid pressure diffusion in the low‐frequency regime. The results also show that Ss is 16%–17% higher than Ss∗. In conclusion, the latter one is superior to the former in its consistency with the Biot theory and unconstraint by the aforementioned two assumptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A theoretical simulation is performed to evaluate how microcracks affect the flow resistance in tumors during the convection-enhanced delivery (CED) of nanofluids. Both Darcy's law and the theory of poroelasticity are used to understand fluid transport with or without microcrack introduction and/or enlargement. The results demonstrate significantly altered pressure and velocity fields in a spherical tumor with a radius of 10 mm due to the presence of a microcrack with a radius of 0.05 mm and length of 3 mm. The non-uniform fluid pressure field enlarges the original cylindrical microcrack to a frustum, with the crack volume more than doubled. Due to the larger permeability and porosity in the microcrack, flow in the tumor is much easier. One finds that the flow resistance with the enlarged microcrack is reduced by 14% from the control without a microcrack. Parametric studies are conducted to show that larger crack radii, longer crack lengths and higher infusing pressures result in further resistance reductions. The largest resistance reduction occurs when the infusing pressure is 4 × 105 Pa and the microcrack is 9 mm long, up to 18% from the control. The Mississippi River Delta Front (MRDF) is a subaqueous apron of rapidly deposited and weakly consolidated sediment extending from the subaerial portions of the Birdsfoot Delta of the Mississippi River, long characterized by mass-wasting sediment transport. Four (4) depositional environments dominate regionally (an undisturbed topset apron, mudflow gully, mudflow lobe, and prodelta), centering around mudflow distribution initiated by a variety of factors (hurricanes, storms, and fluid pressure). To better understand the spatiotemporal scales of the events as well as the controlling processes, eight cores (5.8–8.0 m long) taken offshore from the South Pass (SP) and the Southwest Pass (SWP) were analyzed for gamma density, grain size, sediment fabric (X-radiography), and geochronology (210Pb/137Cs radionuclides). Previous work has focused on the deposition of individual passes and has been restricted to <3 m core penetration, limiting its geochronologic completeness. Building on other recent studies, within the mudflow gully and lobe cores, the homogeneous stepped profiles of 210Pb activities and the corresponding decreased gamma density indicate the presence of gravity-driven mass failures. 210Pb/137Cs indicates that gully sedimentary sediment accumulation since 1953 is greater than 580 cm (sediment accumulation rate [SAR] of 12.8 cm/y) in the southwest pass site, and a lower SAR of the South Pass gully sites (2.6 cm/y). This study shows that (1) recent dated mudflow deposits are identifiable in both the SWP and SP; (2) SWP mudflows have return periods of 10.7 y, six times more frequent than at the SP (66.7 y); (3) 210Pb inventories display higher levels in the SWP area, with the highest focusing factors in proximal/gully sedimentation, and (4) submarine landslides in both study areas remain important for sediment transport despite the differences in sediment delivery and discharge source proximity. The use of environmentally friendly hydraulic fluids is frequently influenced by the temperature reached in the hydraulic circuit. This paper presents an analysis of the effect of temperature on the lifetime of the hydraulic fluid and the hydraulic pump. The test was carried out by continuous loading with a pressure of 21 MPa and a temperature of 96 °C for 100 h. A pressure valve was used for the continuous loading and the temperature was maintained using a cooler. At intervals of 25 h, the flow characteristics of the hydraulic pump were measured and oil sampling was carried out. Subsequently, a comprehensive chemical and physical analysis was carried out. In the present paper, a comprehensive analysis of the influence of eco-friendly hydraulic fluid on the operation of a gear hydraulic pump has been carried out. The study itself did not show the negative influence of the eco-friendly hydraulic fluid on the operation of the gear hydraulic pump. In air-cooled data centers, hot aisle containment is used to separate hot and cold air from mixing to improve cooling effectiveness. However, this creates a significant pressure imbalance between the cold and hot aisles, with the latter being high. The hot aisle high pressure creates bac pressure that pushes against the server-unit fan system, which subsequently results in hot recirculation and insufficient server-unit cooling. This study examines the application of series-configured server fans with the intention of increasing the system pressure head to overcome the hot aisle containment back pressure and eliminate server hot air recirculation. A detailed computational fluid dynamics model for the Dell 2950 2U server is calibrated and validated using existing experimental test results. Furthermore, the impact of changing the server fan system to a series configuration by adding four or more server fans is investigated under different hot-aisle pressure conditions. It was found that changing the server fan system configuration from parallel to series arrangement positively improved the available system static pressure, but it did not result in the elimination of hot air recirculation. The server with the series-configured fan system experienced an average inlet air temperature increase of 9% when compared to the original server under similar conditions. This study serves as a base for integrating liquid and air-cooling systems to form hybrid cooling systems for high-density racks in legacy data centers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydration and dehydration reactions play pivotal roles in plate tectonics and the deep water cycle, yet many facets of (de)hydration reactions remain unclear. Here, we study (de)hydration reactions where associated solid density changes are predominantly balanced by porosity changes, with solid rock deformation playing a minor role. We propose a hypothesis for three scenarios of (de)hydration front propagation and test it using one‐dimensional hydro‐mechanical‐chemical models. Our models couple porous fluid flow, solid rock volumetric deformation, and (de)hydration reactions described by equilibrium thermodynamics. We couple our transport model with reactions through fluid pressure: the fluid pressure gradient governs porous flow and the fluid pressure magnitude controls the reaction boundary. Our model validates the hypothesized scenarios and shows that the change in solid density across the reaction boundary, from lower to higher pressure, dictates whether hydration or dehydration fronts propagate: decreasing solid density causes dehydration front propagation in the direction opposite to fluid flow while increasing solid density enables both hydration and dehydration front propagation in the same direction as fluid flow. Our models demonstrate that reactions can drive the propagation of (de)hydration fronts, characterized by sharp porosity fronts, into a viscous medium with zero porosity and permeability; such propagation is impossible without reactions, as porosity fronts become trapped. We apply our model to serpentinite dehydration reactions with positive and negative Clapeyron slopes and granulite hydration (eclogitization). We use the results of systematic numerical simulations to derive a new equation that allows estimating the transient, reaction‐induced permeability of natural (de)hydration zones. These reactions are critical in understanding processes like plate tectonics, but many aspects of how hydration or dehydration fronts move through a rock are unclear. Our research focuses on reactions where changes in density are mostly balanced by changes in pore space, termed porosity, rather than the deformation of the solid rock. We developed mathematical models that combine fluid flow, rock deformation, and hydration/dehydration reactions. We derived simple equations that predict changes in porosity during hydration and dehydration, even when the solid rock deforms simultaneously. We found that whether a rock hydrates or dehydrates depends on how its solid density changes with increasing pressure during the reaction. By systematically studying our model, we discovered that the speed of hydration and dehydration is not influenced by the interval of fluid pressure over which the reaction occurs or the relationship between porosity and permeability. Sealing rings are the core components of flange sealing structures and play a crucial role in the storage and operation of gas generators. The aging and deformation of seals affect the safe operation of the device. This paper aims to investigate the effect of rubber aging on the sealing performance of the components, which is realized by nonlinear finite element analysis. Firstly, an accelerated degradation test method was used to obtain the compression permanent deformation and stress–strain curve of rubber during the aging process. A two-dimensional finite element model of the sealing structure was constructed and the Yeoh model was utilized to describe the mechanical response of rubber. During the simulation, the contact area was modified based on the compression permanent deformation, and the Yeoh model was updated based on the stress–strain curve changes obtained by the test. The impact of key parameters such as material property changes, rubber physical section deformation, and fluid pressure on sealing performance during the seal ring aging process was systematically studied. The numerical results indicate that due to the aging deformation of rubber seals, there is a significant decrease in contact stress and contact width, as well as a shift in maximum equivalent stress area. Taking into account these findings, this study proposes a new design concept for sealing structures. Understanding the coupling between rock permeability, pore pressure, and fluid flow is crucial, as fluids play an important role in the Earth's crustal dynamics. We measured the distribution of fluid pressure during fluid‐flow experiments on two typical crustal lithologies, granite and basalt. Our results demonstrate that the pore‐pressure distribution transitions from a linear to a non‐linear profile as the imposed pore‐pressure gradient is increased (from 2.5 to 60 MPa) across the specimen. This non‐linearity results from the effective pressure dependence of permeability, for which two analytical formulations were considered: an empirical exponential and a new micromechanics‐based model. In both cases, the non‐linearity of pore pressure distribution is predicted. Using a compilation of permeability versus Terzaghi's effective pressure data for granites and basalts, we show that our micromechanics‐based model has the potential to predict the pore pressure distribution over the range of effective pressures expected within the brittle crust. However, the permeability of crustal rocks may exhibit important pressure dependence, because cracks and fractures will increasingly close with increasing tectonic pressure. In this experimental study, we show that the couplings between increasing pressure, crack closure, and permeability reduction may result in non‐linear pore pressure distributions on a rock specimen at the laboratory scale, which confirms for the first time pioneering theoretical and experimental works. Blood vessels are essential for maintaining tumor growth, progression, and metastasis, yet the tumor vasculature is under a constant state of remodeling. Since the tumor vasculature is an attractive therapeutic target, there is a need to predict the dynamic changes in intratumoral fluid pressure and velocity that occur across the tumor microenvironment (TME). The goal of this study was to obtain insight into perfusion anisotropy within lung tumors. To achieve this goal, we used the perfusion marker Hoechst 33342 and vascular endothelial marker CD31 to stain tumor sections from C57BL/6 mice harboring Lewis lung carcinoma tumors on their flank. Vasculature, capillary diameter, and permeability distribution were extracted at different time points along the tumor growth curve. A computational model was generated by applying a unique modeling approach based on the smeared physical fields (Kojic Transport Model, KTM). KTM predicts spatial and temporal changes in intratumoral pressure and fluid velocity within the growing tumor. Anisotropic perfusion occurs within two domains: capillary and extracellular space. Anisotropy in tumor structure causes the nonuniform distribution of pressure and fluid velocity. These results provide insights regarding local vascular distribution for optimal drug dosing and delivery to better predict distribution and duration of retention within the TME. Patchy saturation is a term used in the seismic prospecting literature to describe the state of a geological formation in which two immiscible pore fluids prevail in mesoscopic-scale clusters. If the pore fluids have contrasting compressibilities, wave-induced fluid pressure diffusion (FPD) processes may induce significant attenuation and velocity dispersion on seismic waves. Biot's monophasic poroelasticity theory is widely used to model the seismic response of rocks containing binary patches of two immiscible pore fluids. Even though effective fluid approximations may help to represent more realistic partially saturated patches using Biot's monophasic equations, the so inferred dissipation may not be representative of actual biphasic FPD phenomena. In this work, Biot's equations for mono- and biphasic fluids are combined to model FPD processes in porous media, comprising fully and partially saturated patches. An analytical solution for one-dimensional layered patchy-saturated media is presented which permits to explain some, as of yet enigmatic, experimentally observed characteristics such as increased seismic attenuation and stiffening effects occurring at low saturations. The results show that the existence of an additional diffusive wave mode within partially saturated patches may render conventional binary and effective fluid approaches incorrect and error prone. However, simplified models for sedimentation and consolidation typically assume hydrostatic mixture pressure and neglect inertial effects without proper justifications. Here, a one-dimensional three-equation two-phase flow model (TTP) is proposed for sedimentation and consolidation, which directly resolves dynamic fluid pressure and inertial terms. The present TTP model is benchmarked against a series of experimental cases and two existing four-equation two-phase flow (FTP) models. It features encouraging performance as compared to measured data and computed results of the existing FTP model. Furthermore, the present TTP model shows superior computing efficiency over the FTP models. To investigate the influences of inertial effects and non-hydrostatic mixture pressure, two simplified versions of the TTP model are constructed and compared with the TTP model. It is shown that incorporating inertial effects and non-hydrostatic fluid pressure are important for accurately predicting the sedimentation-consolidation process. Serpentinites are major carriers of volatiles in deep subduction zones, releasing most fluids in the 500–650°C range. Despite fundamental implications for mass transfer and intermediate‐depth seismicity, the mechanical role of these fluids is unclear. To characterize the mechanical role of fluids at (ultra)high‐pressure conditions, we perform a petro‐structural analysis on olivine‐rich veins from the Western Alps meta‐ophiolite. Some veins formed through dilational and mixed dilational‐shear fracturing without significant shear‐related deformation. However, field and microstructural observations indicate transient shearing and dilational fracturing at high pore fluid pressures. These include: (a) foliated sheared veins; (b) newly formed olivine and Ti‐clinohumite within mineral lineations coating sheared veins and shear bands; (c) Olivine and Ti‐clinohumite mineral fibers sealing porphyroclasts; (d) mutual crosscutting relationships among dilational and shear features. Dilational veins prevail in low‐strain areas, while sheared veins and shear bands dominate within high‐strain zones toward the ultramafic sliver boundaries. These strain variations underscore the role of local stress regimes during serpentinite dehydration. Consequently, areas experiencing stronger shear stresses around large‐scale blocks or mechanical weakening during fluid circulation are prone to draining overpressurized fluids. These interface‐parallel and fracture‐controlled pathways thus facilitate fluid escape from the dehydrating downgoing slab. Transient events of dilational fracturing and brittle‐ductile shearing, along with strain localization in highly comminuted olivine‐bearing sheared veins, may have resulted from strain rate bursts potentially related to (sub)seismic deformation. These observations are in line with geophysical data indicating high pore fluid pressures within the intermediate‐depth seismicity region. Passive vibration isolation techniques with low-frequency characteristics have been a hot topic in the aerospace field. A hydraulic inertial vibration isolator is a highly effective type of isolator for controlling low-frequency vibrations. It typically consists of a main spring, a minor spring, an inertial mass, and a fluid domain. Due to its multi-domain nature, analyzing the isolation mechanism of this type of isolator is challenging. The bond graph method is employed to establish the dynamic model of the isolator. Subsequently, the state equations of the isolator are derived, and the energy equations of both the mechanical and the fluid parts of the isolator are obtained. Based on this, the energy transfer characteristics between the mechanical and fluid domains inside the isolator under external excitation are discussed. The time-domain response of the forces transmitted to the foundation is analyzed. It is shown that the anti-resonance frequency occurs when the forces transmitted to the foundation generated by the main spring and the fluid pressure are equal to that of the minor spring. To verify the proposed method's correctness, a prototype of the isolator is designed and a carefully designed experiment is conducted. The acceleration transmissibility of the isolator is used to conduct a comparative study. The results show that the theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental results. To depict the dynamic characteristics of the isolator under large amplitude vibration, the nonlinear dynamic model of the isolator is developed, and the corresponding force transmissibility of the isolator is formulated. The energy flow between the mechanical and the fluid domains under this condition is also analyzed. The results indicate that the energy flow responses exhibit a similar change tendency to the force transmissibility. However, the peak of the energy ratio between the mechanical subsystem and the fluid is the same as the linear condition, suggesting that this value is determined by the amplification ratio of the isolator. Aerated irrigation is an emerging and efficient irrigation technique, and the throttle-squeeze releaser (TS releaser) is a commonly used key component in aerated irrigation devices. However, it has issues such as large bubble size, uneven distribution, and low dissolved-oxygen content in the irrigation water. Given these problems, this study optimized the valve chamber and throat structure of the releaser based on the TS releaser, designing three different types of releasers with W-shaped valve chamber, arc-shaped valve chamber, and multi-throat W-shaped valve chamber. The simulation results, obtained using the Fluent module with grid division in ANSYS 2022, show that high-pressure regions are formed inside the releaser with V-shaped and arc-shaped valve chambers that are detrimental to the formation of microbubbles in high-pressure dissolved-air water, while the fluid pressure reduction and energy dissipation are more balanced inside the releasers with a W-shaped valve chamber. Compared to a single-throat design, the multi-throat design allows high-pressure fluid to enter the valve chamber more uniformly, which aids in maximizing the functionality and performance of the valve chamber. To determine the effects of throat size, outlet size, and valve chamber angle on the pressure field, turbulent flow field, velocity field, and air-phase distribution within the multi-throat W-shaped valve chamber releaser, simulation interaction experiments were conducted. The results showed that the optimized releaser performed best when the throat diameter was 1 mm, the outlet size was 2 mm, and the valve chamber angle was 80°. Finally, a comparative performance evaluation between the conventional TS diffuser and the optimized multi-throat W-valve chamber releaser reveals that the latter achieves a maximum dissolved-oxygen content of 6.36 mg/L in the treated irrigation water, representing an approximately 3.5% improvement over the 6.14 mg/L recorded by the traditional releaser. Furthermore, when considering the thresholds of irrigation flow rates above 950 L/h and dissolved-oxygen levels exceeding 5.9 mg/L, the multi-throat W-valve chamber diffuser exhibits a broader operational range characterized by high flow rates and dissolved-oxygen levels. The nozzle is the key element of the water jet generator for energy conversion. In order to explore the influence of the nozzle diameter on the pressure characteristics of the supercharged pulsed water jet plenum chamber, a supercharged pulsed water jet pressure acquisition system was established, and the equations of motion and theoretical pressurization ratio equations of the supercharged pulsed water jet generator were established. The pressurization chamber pressure acquisition experiments under different nozzle diameters were carried out. The research results show that the pressurized pulsed water jet generator has a critical nozzle diameter of 0.6 mm. When the nozzle diameter is less than the critical diameter, the pressure in the boost chamber is equal to the product of the driving pressure and the boost ratio. As the nozzle changes, there is no significant change in the peak pressure and frequency of the boost chamber. When the nozzle diameter is greater than the critical diameter, there is a non-linear relationship between the boost chamber pressure and the driving pressure. As the nozzle diameter gradually increases, the actual boost ratio gradually decreases, and the peak pressure of the boost chamber further decreases. The nozzle diameter can no longer provide a load for the establishment of fluid pressure in the boost chamber. In this paper a porous fluid-saturated cylinder subjected to a finite twist deformation is analyzed. The material of the skeleton of the porous cylinder is hyperelastic of Ogden-type and assumed nearly incompressible. The twist is applied to the cylinder in a fast rate so that the fluid pressure develops in the pores of the cylinder. The main objective of this paper is to study the stresses and the fluid pressure in the cylinder over a short period of time after the twist has been applied, or to study the initial response. The analytical expressions for the stress components and the fluid pressure are derived for Ogden material with arbitrary material parameters. The quantitative picture for the stress state is given and the signs of the normal stresses are explained. The stress arising in some imaginary fibers that were initially parallel to the axis of the cylinder is obtained. The present problem is similar to the torsion problem of a totally incompressible and nonporous cylinder in a sense that the total stresses are identical in both problems. But decomposition of the total stresses into the fluid pressure and the effective stresses, which is specific for the fluid-saturated body, can be found only using the present analysis. This paper investigates the effects on the behavior of a saturated porous material of an evolving microstructure induced by the mass exchange between the solid and the fluid phases saturating the porous network, using two-scale asymptotic expansions. A thermodynamically consistent model of the fluid physics flowing through the porous network is proposed first, describing microstructure variations to be captured implicitly via the level set method. The two-scale asymptotic expansions method is then applied to obtain an upscaled model capable to account for mass transfer. This last is proven to depend not only on the gradient of the macroscopic forces, such as the fluid pressure and the chemical potential, but also on the average velocity of the solid–fluid interface. In the rate‐state friction law framework, the transition from velocity weakening (V‐W) to velocity strengthening (V‐S) behavior marks the base of the seismogenic crust. Here we investigate the role of fault slip displacement under hydrothermal conditions in controlling the V‐W to V‐S transition. We shear simulated gabbro gouges at slip velocities ranging from 16 nm/s (∼50 cm/year) to 10 μm/s (∼8 cm/day) under hydrothermal conditions (300–400°C temperature; 30 MPa pore fluid pressure). We observe that cumulative fault slip increases the critical velocity for the V‐W to V‐S transition. The transition is accompanied by localized to distributed deformation mode, the formation of smectite‐type clays and occurrence of intergranular mass transfer. Our results provide insights into understanding the deepening and shallowing of V‐W/V‐S boundary (lower limit of the seismogenic zone) following a mainshock. Besides strain rate effects, slip‐enhanced chemical alteration and grain size‐sensitive deformation may temporarily contribute to the shallowing process. Plain Language Summary: According to the standard model of earthquake nucleation, earthquakes are the result of frictional instabilities along faults. The necessary condition for earthquake nucleation is that the frictional strength of a fault decreases with fault slip velocity ("velocity‐weakening" behavior) or slip distance ("slip‐weakening" behavior). Although extensive laboratory studies have been conducted to investigate the velocity‐dependence of friction in rocks, less attention was paid to the role of slip displacement on fault frictional stability, especially in the presence of hot and pressurized fluids. The latter, difficult to reproduce in the laboratory, is a common condition at seismogenic depths. In this study, we examine how the frictional stability evolves with slip velocity and displacement on simulated faults made of powders of gabbro (a common rock of the oceanic crust) under hydrothermal conditions up to 400°C. We find that the critical velocity for the transition from velocity‐weakening to velocity‐strengthening increases with cumulative slip displacement. In nature, the increase of this critical velocity may result in the uplift, during seismic sequences, of the base of the seismogenic crust (i.e., aftershock hypocenters will be shallower). Our findings suggest that, slip displacement, accompanied by fault mineralogical‐structural evolution, can influence fault frictional stability and earthquake nucleation. High-quality and high-efficiency machining of thin-wall, low-stiffness, and large-scale skin parts with complex curved surface is in great demand in the aerospace field. Mirror milling is an efficient and green processing technology for large-scale skin parts. The support technology of mirror milling is the key technology to ensure the machining accuracy and surface quality. Aiming at the problems of poor machining accuracy and surface quality, as well as the scratches on the support surface in the sliding and rolling support modes, a new technology of vacuum preloading hydrostatic support was proposed. The machining accuracy and surface quality of thin-wall parts by mirror milling with vacuum preloading hydrostatic support are systematically studied. The main study and findings are as follows: the vacuum preloaded hydrostatic supporting head was designed. The theoretical analysis of the liquid film stiffness and thickness were carried out. The vacuum preloaded hydrostatic support system was designed and developed. Mirror milling experiments of thin-walled parts supported by vacuum preloading hydrostatic pressure were carried out to compare the surface profile and surface roughness under different fluid feed pressure and vacuum preloading. It is concluded that within a certain range, the smaller the vacuum preload and the larger the inlet pressure, the closer the milling depth is to the target depth; the larger the inlet pressure and the larger the vacuum preload, the better the consistency of workpiece thickness of the milled surface; and the presence of the liquid film effectively reduces the roughness of the milled surface. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a fatal disease with progressive severity and no cure; the heart's inability to adequately pump blood leads to fluid accumulation and frequent hospital readmissions after initial treatments. Therefore, it is imperative to continuously monitor CHF patients during its early stages to slow its progression and enable timely medical interventions for optimal treatment. An increase in interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) is indicative of acute CHF exacerbation, making IFP a viable biomarker for predicting upcoming CHF if continuously monitored. In this paper, we present an inductor-capacitor (LC) sensor for subcutaneous wireless and continuous IFP monitoring. The sensor is composed of inexpensive planar copper coils defined by a simple craft cutter, which serves as both the inductor and capacitor. Because of its sensing mechanism, the sensor does not require batteries and can wirelessly transmit pressure information. The sensor has a low-profile form factor for subcutaneous implantation and can communicate with a readout device through 4 layers of skin (12.7 mm thick in total). With a soft silicone rubber as the dielectric material between the copper coils, the sensor demonstrates an average sensitivity as high as –8.03 MHz/mmHg during in vitro simulations. The principles of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production, circulation and outflow and regulation of fluid volumes and pressures in the normal brain are summarised. Abnormalities in these aspects in intracranial hypertension, ventriculomegaly and hydrocephalus are discussed. The brain parenchyma has a cellular framework with interstitial fluid (ISF) in the intervening spaces. Framework stress and interstitial fluid pressure (ISFP) combined provide the total stress which, after allowing for gravity, normally equals intracerebral pressure (ICP) with gradients of total stress too small to measure. Fluid pressure may differ from ICP in the parenchyma and collapsed subarachnoid spaces when the parenchyma presses against the meninges. Fluid pressure gradients determine fluid movements. In adults, restricting CSF outflow from subarachnoid spaces produces intracranial hypertension which, when CSF volumes change very little, is called idiopathic intracranial hypertension (iIH). Raised ICP in iIH is accompanied by increased venous sinus pressure, though which is cause and which effect is unclear. In infants with growing skulls, restriction in outflow leads to increased head and CSF volumes. In adults, ventriculomegaly can arise due to cerebral atrophy or, in hydrocephalus, to obstructions to intracranial CSF flow. In non-communicating hydrocephalus, flow through or out of the ventricles is somehow obstructed, whereas in communicating hydrocephalus, the obstruction is somewhere between the cisterna magna and cranial sites of outflow. When normal outflow routes are obstructed, continued CSF production in the ventricles may be partially balanced by outflow through the parenchyma via an oedematous periventricular layer and perivascular spaces. In adults, secondary hydrocephalus with raised ICP results from obvious obstructions to flow. By contrast, with the more subtly obstructed flow seen in normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), fluid pressure must be reduced elsewhere, e.g. in some subarachnoid spaces. In idiopathic NPH, where ventriculomegaly is accompanied by gait disturbance, dementia and/or urinary incontinence, the functional deficits can sometimes be reversed by shunting or third ventriculostomy. Parenchymal shrinkage is irreversible in late stage hydrocephalus with cellular framework loss but may not occur in early stages, whether by exclusion of fluid or otherwise. The development of a novel method for modelling fluid flow and heat transfer in naturally fractured geothermal reservoirs represents a significant advancement in geothermal energy research. This Study presents a hybrid approach, which combines discrete fracture and single continuum techniques, to effectively capture the complex interactions between fluid flow and heat transfer in geothermal fractured reservoirs. In addition, the incorporation of the local thermal nonequilibrium method for simulating heat transmission accounts for the disparities in temperature between the rock matrix and the fluid, providing a more realistic representation of heat transfer processes. The study also presents a fully coupled thermo-poro-elastic framework that integrates fluid flow and heat transfer to comprehensively evaluate reservoir responses to injection/production scenarios. This coupled approach allows for the prediction of changes in reservoir properties, such as permeability and porosity, under varying fluid pressure and temperature conditions. The application of the proposed model to evaluate a geothermal reservoir's long-term response to injection/production scenarios provides valuable insights into the reservoir's behaviour and potential energy production capacity. The sensitivity analysis further enhances the model's utility by identifying the key reservoir parameters that significantly influence the thermal depletion of the reservoir. Overall, this novel modelling approach holds promise for improving the understanding and management of naturally fractured geothermal reservoirs, contributing to the optimization of geothermal energy extraction strategies. Faults in the upper crust are sometimes thought to act as self-sealing valves, episodically releasing highly overpressured fluids trapped at greater depth during earthquakes. They are also often considered to be capable of actively pumping fluids into or out of faults in response to coseismic volumetric strain, thermal pressurization or other mechanisms. In this study, we investigate how these different types of behaviour (i.e. valve versus pump) are manifested in earthquakes. We do this using a 2-D plane strain model where frictional sliding on a thrust fault that is fed by a fluid source at its base is coupled to porous flow, thermal pressurization and strong variations in permeability. Our results show that thermal pressurization leads to dramatic dynamic weakening that produces earthquakes that propagate as slip pulses producing large stress drop, large slip and high slip velocities. On the other hand, valve-type behaviour typically produces smaller, less energetic earthquakes that commonly arrest before rupturing the entire fault. In some valve models, we observe complex compound ruptures and swarm activity, which is linked to the ascent of a propagating fluid pressure pulse driven by a large increase in permeability during sliding. Both pump and valve mechanisms can produce anomalously weak faults, though they are each associated with distinctly different fluid pressure and strength evolution over the seismic cycle and during rupture. The quality and safety of dairy products are highly valued by consumers and dairy manufacturers, which is mainly ensured by thorough cleaning of dairy production equipment. Milk fouling can cause pipes to clog and reduce transmission. Incomplete cleaning can cause microbial breeding, which will affect the quality and safety of dairy products. To achieve efficient and rapid cleaning of dairy processing equipment, cleaning agents have always been a necessary choice for dairy and food enterprises. This paper describes the production mechanism of milk fouling, the cleaning mechanism by cleaning agents, and the cleaning process. Development of cleaning agents are introduced in detail, include compound alkaline/acid/neutral cleaning agents, enzyme cleaning agents and cleaning additives. The factors affecting cleaning efficiency are also viewed, which include type and dosage of cleaning agents, cleaning process (cleaning time, cleaning liquid temperature, cleaning fluid flow rate), and other influencing factors (cleaning fluid pressure, Reynolds number and shear stress, surface types). Four aspects are reviewed in this manuscript, include cleaning objects (milk fouling), cleaning substances (cleaning agents), how to clean (cleaning mechanism) and how to clean efficiently (cleaning influencing factors), which provides a valuable reference for the improvement of the dairy cleaning process. A turbine flowmeter for sensing the water supply in an ice-making system of a refrigerator requires high sensitivity to the flow rate. This research aims to develop a comprehensive performance evaluation technique by constructing an experimental setup and establishing a numerical technique to simulate the rotational motion of the impeller in response to the injection of water into the flowmeter. An experimental rig was built to secure the measurement accuracy according to the fluid temperature and pressure changes and verify the reliability under various flow conditions from low to high. A numerical method based on the six-degree of freedom method was used to confirm its validity, which is different from a moving reference frame, which numerically analyzes the rotational speed of the turbine by backtracking the rotational speed to correspond to the flow conditions by giving it a constant rotational speed. By simulating water injection into the flowmeter, generating kinetic energy in the impeller according to the flow rate, and subsequently rotating the impeller due to the generated torque, the numerical analysis cost was reduced, allowing direct numerical analysis of the impeller's acceleration motion. The results were evaluated in terms of angular velocity and pulse signal, and the applicability and reliability of the numerical technique were verified by comparing the numerical results with experimental results. The aerodynamic performance of the impeller was analyzed to understand the phenomena as the impeller rotates. The results of this study can be utilized to conduct future research to improve the performance of flow meters, thus proving its value as a preliminary study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The coalbed methane (CBM) productivity is directly determined by the fracture permeability during hydraulic fracturing, which is regulated by the distribution of proppants. The proppant may be unevenly distributed in the fracture because of variables like the architecture of the fracture and the characteristics of the sand‐carrying fluid. This study used two types of random functions to produce different ununiform distributions of proppant clusters in large‐scale fractures, with the aim of investigating the effect of these distributions on the overall permeability of the fracture. A model of fluid‐structure coupling is proposed. The closure of large‐scale fractures under in‐situ stress is analyzed using solid mechanics and the penalty function; the CBM flowing in proppant clusters and the high‐speed channel between them is simulated using Darcy's law and the Navier–Stokes equation, respectively; and the overall permeability of fractures is computed using the fluid pressure drop throughout the fracture and the fluid flowing velocity in the fracture's outlet. Since most CBM flows along high‐speed channels between the proppant clusters, the simulated findings show that the overall permeability of fractures with an uneven distribution of proppant clusters is significantly higher than that of the proppant cluster itself. As CBM becomes more discretely distributed, the proportion of CBM flowing within the proppant cluster continuously drops. As the permeability of the proppant cluster increases, the volume ratio of proppant clusters decreases, and the distribution of proppant clusters becomes more discrete, the overall permeability of the fracture continuously increases. Dynamic failure in the laboratory is commonly preceded by many foreshocks which accompany premonitory aseismic slip. Aseismic slip is also thought to govern earthquake nucleation in nature, yet, foreshocks are rare. Here, we examine how heterogeneity due to different roughness, damage and pore pressures affects premonitory slip and acoustic emission characteristics. High fluid pressures increase stiffness and reduce heterogeneity which promotes more rapid slip acceleration and shorter precursory periods, similar to the effect of low geometric heterogeneity on smooth faults. The associated acoustic emission activity in low-heterogeneity samples becomes increasingly dominated by earthquake-like double-couple focal mechanisms. The similarity of fluid pressure increase and roughness reduction suggests that increased stress and geometric homogeneity may substantially shorten the duration of foreshock activity. Gradual fault activation and extended foreshock activity is more likely observable on immature faults at shallow depth. While foreshocks in nature are rare, dynamic slip in the laboratory is generally preceded by bursts of foreshocks. This study shows that laboratory foreshocks become increasingly rare at conditions that are more similar to pressure and stress conditions at average seismogenic depth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tube bending with a critical bending ratio necessitates the exploration of new bending methods. This research introduces a novel approach to rotational bending using a variable curvature bending die. Unlike conventional techniques that employ fixed-radius bending for hollow tubes with a round cross-section, this method gradually transitions the shape from a large radius to a small radius. To determine the curvature of the bending die, we employ an involute curve as the geometric equation governing the variable curvature of the bending die. With the advancement of tube hydroforming, pressurized fluid is employed instead of a mandrel in the rotational bending process. To investigate this, a thin-walled aluminum tube composed of 6063 alloys (with a D/t ratio of 13/88) is prepared and subjected to rotational tensile bending at critical bending radius ratios of D1, D1.6, and variable curvature, all at a 90-degree angle. Both simulation and experimental tests are utilized to analyze the impact of internal fluid pressure and bending die curvature on tube spring back. The results demonstrate that, under constant pressure conditions, the use of a variable-radius bending die results in reduced spring back compared to a fixed-radius bending die. Modeling two‐phase flow in unsaturated porous media is not only important to vadose zone hydrology but also of great value in diverse disciplines. Common approaches use a simplified relationship between fluid pressure difference and saturation, neglecting the influence of saturation change rates. However, many studies have suggested that the applicability of this approach is limited to situations where the rate of change in saturation is insignificant. Despite several studies highlighting the importance of non‐equilibrium capillarity effects in unsaturated flow modeling, its significance in the mechanical response of the porous medium remains unclear. This study thus aims to address this gap by comparing the simulation results of the traditional static approach and an advanced approach that incorporates dynamic capillarity effects. The comparison is conducted under various flow boundary conditions to assess the magnitude of the differences between the two approaches. The results indicate that as the hydraulic boundary conditions' absolute values increase, the contrast between the mechanical response of the two simulation scenarios (dynamic and static) becomes more significant. For instance, the dynamic model can predict shear strengths up to 50% higher than the static model. This highlights the importance of considering non‐equilibrium effects while modeling the mechanical behavior of an unsaturated porous medium. Finally, the parametric study of the effect of dynamic coefficient, air entry value, and saturated conductivity reveals the more pronounced effect of the dynamic coefficient on the mechanical response. In order to solve the problem of unstable fluid supply pressure and serious impact caused by the complicated and changeable working condition of a fully mechanized mining face in coal mines and the sluggish response of the fluid supply system to the fluid demand for the hydraulic support, a control method based on online updating generalized regression neural network (GRNN) was proposed. Firstly, the simulated hydraulic support test platform and co-simulation model were built. Secondly, The optimal flow dataset of steady-pressure fluid supply under different working conditions is calculated by simulation. Furthermore, the GRNN prediction model was established by using dataset and online updating learning technology to predict the optimal fluid supply flow according to environmental parameters. Finally, the optimal flow control method of online updating GRNN was established, and numerical research and experimental verification were also carried out in different working conditions. The results indicated that the proposed control method could track the working conditions of the working face in real time and adjusted the fluid supply flow of the emulsion pump station adaptively, which effectively alleviated the pressure fluctuation and pressure shock, and the system pressure was more stable, meeting the demand of steady-pressure fluid supply on the working face. It is generally accepted that hydrocephalus is a consequence of the disbalance between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) secretion and absorption which should in turn lead to CSF pressure gradient development and ventricular enlargement. To test CSF pressure gradient role in hydrocephalus development, we experimentally caused CSF system impairment at two sites in cats. In the first group of animals, we caused Sylvian aqueduct obstruction and recorded CSF pressure changes pre and post obstruction at three measuring sites (lateral ventricle -LV, cortical-CSS and lumbar subarachnoid space -LSS) during 15 min periods and in different body positions over 360 degrees. In the second group of experiments, we caused cervical stenosis by epidural plastic semiring implantation and monitored CSF pressure changes pre and post stenosis implantation at two measuring sites (lateral ventricle and lumbar subarachnoid space) during 15 min periods in different body positions over 360 degrees. Both groups of experimental animals had similar CSF pressures before stenosis or obstruction at all measuring points in the horizontal position. During head-up verticalization, CSF pressures inside the cranium gradually became more subatmospheric with no significant difference between LV and CSS, as they are measured at the same hydrostatic level, while CSF pressure inside LSS became more positive, causing the development of a large hydrostatic gradient between the cranial and the spinal space. With cervical stenosis, CSF pressure inside the cranium is positive during head-up verticalization, while in cats with aqueductal obstruction CSF pressure inside the CSS remains negative, as it was during control period. Concomitantly, CSF pressure inside LV becomes less negative, thus creating a small hydrostatic gradient between LV and CSS. Since CSF pressure and gradient changes occur only by shifting body position from the horizontal plane, our results indicate that cervical stenosis in a head-up vertical position reduces blood perfusion of the whole brain, while aqueductal obstruction impairs only the perfusion of the local periventricular brain tissue. It seems that, for evolutionary important bipedal activity, free craniospinal communication and good spinal space compliance represent crucial biophysical parameters for adequate cerebral blood perfusion and prevention of pathophysiological changes leading to the development of hydrocephalus. A diaphragm pump is a type of volumetric pump that has excellent sealing performance. An electromagnetic diaphragm pump is a kind of widely adopted diaphragm pump that has a simple structure, low power loss, and high cost performance. However, the calculation method of deformation for the electromagnetic diaphragm pump rubber diaphragm is presently lacking. Herein, a calculating method of deformation for the electromagnetic diaphragm pump rubber diaphragm is proposed. By establishing and analyzing a deformation model of the electromagnetic diaphragm pump rubber diaphragm, a theoretical relationship between the deformation of the electromagnetic diaphragm pump rubber diaphragm, the size of the electromagnetic diaphragm pump rubber diaphragm and the pressure of fluid is determined. The experimental results indicate that the biggest difference between the tested axial deformation and the calculated axial deformation of the electromagnetic diaphragm pump rubber diaphragm is 0.04 mm and the calculation results show agreement with the experimental results. Due to the three-dimensional non-axisymmetric shape of the volute, its interaction with the impeller increases the internal flow field complexity and instability of the marine centrifugal pump, representing the main reason for pump body vibration and hydraulic noise. First, the basic principle of fluid machinery noise calculation was explained based on the Lighthill acoustic analogy method and Curle's theory. Then, the fluid pressure pulsation and flow characteristics of centrifugal pumps were analyzed using the Fluent software, after which the Actran software was used to examine the flow-induced vibration noise properties. The results showed that the clearance size significantly impacted the pump head, while the peak value of the flow-induced vibration response was mainly twice the blade frequency. Although a larger ring clearance increased the structural vibration, it had little impact on the sound pressure level changes in the external sound field. Calcareous mudstone, a type of red-bed soft rock, is prevalent in the surrounding rock of the Central Yunnan Water Diversion Project (CYWDP) in Yunnan Province, China, significantly impacting both construction and operation. The mechanical properties of calcareous mudstone vary with depth. This study investigates its mechanical properties, permeability characteristics, energy evolution, and macro- and micro-failure characteristics during deformation using triaxial compression tests under different confining pressures. Results reveal distinct stage characteristics in the stress–strain behavior, permeability, and energy evolution of calcareous mudstone. Crack propagation, permeability evolution, and energy dissipation are closely linked, elucidating the deformation and failure process, with fluid pressure playing a crucial role. The confining pressure σ3 increased from 2 MPa to 4 MPa and 6 MPa, while the peak stress σc (Pw = 1 MPa) of the calcareous mudstone increased by 84.49% and 24.89%, respectively. Conversely, the permeability at σc decreased from 11.25 × 10−17 m2 to 8.99 × 10−17 m2 and 5.72 × 10−17 m2, while the dissipative energy at σc increased from 12.39 kJ/m3 to 21.14 kJ/m3 and 42.51 kJ/m3. In comparison to those without fluid pressure (Pw = 0), the value of σc at Pw = 1 MPa was reduced by 36.61%, 23.23%, and 20.67% when σ3 was 2, 4, and 6 MPa, respectively. Increasing confining pressure augments characteristic stresses, deformation and failure energy, and ductility, while reducing permeability, crack propagation, and width. The reduction of effective normal stress during earthquake slip due to thermal pressurization of fault zone pore fluids is a significant fault weakening mechanism. Explicit incorporation of this process into frictional fault models involves solving the diffusion equations for fluid pressure and temperature outside the fault at each time step, which significantly increases the computational complexity. Here, we propose a proxy for thermal pressurization implemented through a modification of the rate-and-state friction law. This approach is designed to emulate the fault weakening and the relationship between breakdown energy and slip resulting from thermal pressurization and is appropriate for fully dynamic simulations of multiple earthquake cycles. It preserves the computational efficiency of conventional rate-and-state friction models, which in turn can enable systematic studies to advance our understanding of the effects of fault weakening on earthquake mechanics. In 2.5-D simulations of pulse-like ruptures on faults with finite seismogenic width, based on our thermal pressurization proxy, we find that the spatial distribution of slip velocity near the rupture front is consistent with the conventional square-root singularity, despite continued slip-weakening within the pulse, once the rupture has propagated a distance larger than the rupture width. An unconventional singularity appears only at shorter rupture distances. We further derive and verify numerically a theoretical estimate of the breakdown energy dissipated by our implementation of thermal pressurization. The 2020 Alex storm in southern France led to localized extreme rainfall exceeding 600 mm in less than 24 hr. In the 100 days following the storm, a series of small earthquakes swarm occurred beneath the Tinée valley, a region characterized by a low background deformation. To gain insight into the mechanisms controlling swarm evolution, we used an enhanced seismic catalog to detect 188 events. These events exhibited magnitudes comprised between −1.03 and 2.01, and 78 of them were relocated using relative locations at an average depth of 3–4 km. Additionally, we estimated the directions and velocities of seismicity migration. Our analyses reveal multiple episodes of hypocenter expansion and migration within a fluid‐saturated fault system. Observations provide evidence of a bi‐directional seismicity migration marked by dual velocities within a swarm. The northward seismicity migration aligns with velocities indicative of aseismic slip (∼130 m/hr), while the southward migration corresponds to velocities associated with fluid pressure diffusion (∼5 m/hr). This migration pattern underscores the interplay of multiple physical mechanisms in both triggering and driving earthquakes. A stress‐driven model based on rate‐and‐state friction successfully explains the overall evolution of observed seismicity, whereas a fluid‐driven model fails to reproduce the data. Our observations and models suggest that fluid pressure changes resulting from intense rainfall caused aseismic slip in the shallow portion of the crust. We hypothesize that aseismic deformation serves as the driving force for the earthquake swarms, coupled with the invasion of pressurized fluid due to diffusing rainfall. In the Changning region of the Sichuan Basin, China, which has experienced decades-long injection of freshwater for commercial salt mining, a Ms 6.0 earthquake occurred in June 2019, along with four Ms >5 aftershocks. Using data from local and regional seismic stations, we determine accurate locations for this earthquake sequence, velocity structures, and excess pore fluid pressures of the source region. Our results show that the Ms 6.0 earthquake is extremely shallow (~1.6 km below mean sea level) and is associated with low Vs and high Vp/Vs values and excess fluid pressures, indicating a fluid-induced earthquake. The mainshock was likely the shallowest M >6.0 induced earthquake, and it was triggered by the combined effect of pore pressure increase from the diffusion of injected fluids, differential formation subsidence from salt caverns, and highly fractured slip-prone rocks enriched in quartz and silica content. This work examines the beneficial role of an unsteady stenosis, not driven by any external energy source, as a means for augmenting the flow rate of a valveless pump in a hydraulic loop, including an open tank. In contrast to our previous work, in which the concept of the latter stenosis was introduced for the first time in a horizontal closed loop, here, gravity was taken into account. The stenosis neck cross-sectional area was controlled by the fluid pressure and the opposing force applied externally by a spring of adjustable tension. A pincher compressed and decompressed a part of the pump's flexible tube periodically, with frequencies from 5 Hz to 11 Hz and compression ratios Ab from 24% to 65%. The presence of the stenosis increased the net flow rate by 19 times for Ab = 24% and 6.3 times for Ab = 38%; whereas for Ab = 65%, the flow rates were comparable. The volumetric efficiency varied from 30% to 40% under the presence of the stenosis, and from 2% to 20% without the stenosis. The role of the stenosis was to cause a unidirectional flow, opening during tube compression and closing during decompression. The pressure amplitudes along the flexible tube increased towards the rigid–flexible tube junction (as a result of the wave reflections), which were found to be significantly attenuated by the presence of the stenosis, whereas the flow rate pulsations did not exceed 10% of the mean at the peak net flow rates. Saline aquifers have been used for CO2 storage as a dedicated greenhouse gas mitigation strategy since 1996. Depleted gas fields are now being planned for large-scale CCS projects. Although basalt host reservoirs are also going to be used, saline aquifers and depleted gas fields will make up most of the global geological repositories for CO2. At present, depleted gas fields and saline aquifers seem to be treated as if they are a single entity, but they have distinct differences that are examined here. Depleted gas fields have far more pre-existing information about the reservoir, top-seal caprock, internal architecture of the site, and about fluid flow properties than saline aquifers due to the long history of hydrocarbon project development and fluid production. The fluid pressure evolution paths for saline aquifers and depleted gas fields are distinctly different because, unlike saline aquifers, depleted gas fields are likely to be below hydrostatic pressure before CO2 injection commences. Depressurised depleted gas fields may require an initial injection of gas-phase CO2 instead of dense-phase CO2 typical of saline aquifers, but the greater pressure difference may allow higher initial injection rates in depleted gas fields than saline aquifers. Depressurised depleted gas fields may lead to CO2-injection-related stress paths that are distinct from saline aquifers depending on the geomechanical properties of the reservoir. CO2 trapping in saline aquifers will be dominated by buoyancy processes with residual CO2 and dissolved CO2 developing over time whereas depleted gas fields will be dominated by a sinking body of CO2 that forms a cushion below the remaining methane. Saline aquifers tend to have a relatively limited ability to fill pores with CO2 (i.e., low storage efficiency factors between 2 and 20%) as the injected CO2 is controlled by buoyancy and viscosity differences with the saline brine. In contrast, depleted gas fields may have storage efficiency factors up to 80% as the reservoir will contain sub-hydrostatic pressure methane that is easy to displace. Saline aquifers have a greater risk of halite-scale and minor dissolution of reservoir minerals than depleted gas fields as the former contain vastly more of the aqueous medium needed for such processes compared to the latter. Depleted gas fields have some different leakage risks than saline aquifers mostly related to the different fluid pressure histories, depressurisation-related alteration of geomechanical properties, and the greater number of wells typical of depleted gas fields than saline aquifers. Depleted gas fields and saline aquifers also have some different monitoring opportunities. The high-density, electrically conductive brine replaced by CO2 in saline aquifers permits seismic and resistivity imaging, but these forms of imaging are less feasible in depleted gas fields. Monitoring boreholes are less likely to be used in saline aquifers than depleted gas fields as the latter typically have numerous pre-existing exploration and production well penetrations. The significance of this analysis is that saline aquifers and depleted gas fields must be treated differently although the ultimate objective is the same: to permanently store CO2 to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and minimise global heating. Drilling is one of the most commonly used techniques in hydrogeological exploration and is employed to obtain rock samples and create boreholes. During conventional drilling, it is necessary to raise all the drilling tools in the borehole when switching between coring drilling and non-coring drilling, which causes large auxiliary operation time consumption and poor drilling efficiency. Based on the structure of wireline coring tools, a large diameter modular drill bit was designed to switch between coring drilling and non-coring drilling without lifting the whole set of drilling tools. In the COMSOL simulation environment, a simulation model of the modular bit was constructed. Drilling fluid velocity and pressure characteristics flowing through the modular bit were studied. According to the analysis results, with the same input flow rate, similar velocities and lower pressure loss can be obtained in non-coring drilling as with the coring bit, and thus drilling cuttings can be removed effectively even if there are more cuttings produced in non-coring drilling than in coring drilling for a borehole drilled at the same diameter. When the outside diameter of the modular bit is 216 mm, the recommended clearance value is 9 mm or 10 mm in order to obtain lower pressure loss and larger diameter core. To generate low pressure loss and ensure bit strength, a layout with four nozzles on the internal non-coring bit is recommended. The modular bit enables fast switching between coring drilling and non-coring drilling without raising the drilling tools.
