Recently, researchers are facing great challenges to form the homogeneous solutions of various liquids at biomedical and industrial levels. Such homogeneous solutions can be controlled through stratification phenomenon directly which is ignored by the researchers in the existing literature specifically quadratic stratification and melting heat mechanism which is valid only for higher temperature processes. Thus, to form the homogeneous and stable liquid solutions for various industrial processes, we investigate the melting heat phenomenon in quadratic stratified Jeffery Nano fluid flow deformed due to linearly stretching sheet along with stagnation point. Inclined constant magnetic field is implemented on the fluid through an arbitrary angel. Characteristics of heat and transportations are disclosed through viscous dissipation, Brownian motion and thermphoresis. Temperature and concentration of the surrounding fluids are assumed higher than the stretching surface. The resultant governing equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations through proper transformations. Convergent analytical series solutions are computed via homotopic approach. Impact of various emerging parameters on temperature, velocity and concentration fields are illustrated and discussed comprehensively. Sherwood and Nusselt numbers and drag force are scrutinized mathematically, physically and graphically. It is analyzed from the study that (i) dominant melting reduces the temperature field (ii) higher thermal and solutal stratification decay the temperature and concentration fields respectively (iii) higher thermophoresis enhances the temperature field. Further, it is concluded that stable and homogeneous solutions may be made by increasing melting and reducing stratification phenomena. In this paper, a forced vibration caused by drag and lift forces with time‐varying mass is studied. The construction of the model is conducted by adding impact force to the previous model. The periodicity of the solution is yet known. Hence, the model is seen as a perturbation problem. Understanding particle ejection behaviours in plume-regolith interaction is important for a safe soft-landing system and landing manoeuvre in planetary missions. In this study, a Mach 5.8 hypersonic jet at the different Reynolds numbers of 2.58 × 104 and 9.35 × 102 impinges on the deposited glass particles of 80 μm diameter in a vacuum chamber, and the particle and gas motions at the nozzle pressure ratios (NPR) of 95, 950, and 1900 are investigated using the time-resolved PIV and high-speed Schlieren techniques. A narrow hypersonic jet consisting of several shock cells forms at the lower NPR of 95 and causes a deeply narrow crater due to its jet penetration into the deposited particles. The deeply narrow crater makes a particle ejection angle increase upwardly. On the other hand, a relatively wide crater forms due to the jet impingement at the other NPR conditions which a widely long shock cell is generated. Based on the present experimental results, a dominant factor in particle ejection angle is the crater size and depth, whereas a particle diffusion velocity is dominated by surrounding pressure. Understanding the effect of airfoil geometry on the criticality of leading-edge suction is key to modeling the leading-edge vortex (LEV) dynamics of unsteady airfoils in a simple and robust manner. The current work aimed at investigating the dependency of the leading-edge suction parameter (LESP), a nondimensional measure of the leading-edge suction, at its critical value, which is indicative of leading-edge vortex initiation, on airfoil camber. Computational data for six NACA XX12 series airfoils with varying camber magnitude and maximum camber location at Reynolds numbers 30,000 and 3 million were analyzed. Observations indicate that increasing the airfoil camber leads to delayed LEV initiation and suction breakdown due to higher leading-edge flow curvature. The rate of increase of critical LESP with camber was seen to be independent of Reynolds number. Aftward movement of the maximum camber location was seen to have a reducing effect on the airfoil's forces and LEV dynamics. Lift and drag forces were observed to be dependent on camber magnitude and location prior to LEV formation but independent during the LEV-dominated part of the motion. This article presents research into the feasibility of applying a nonlinear damper of a new conceptual structure. The key component of the damper is a circular membrane with slits that can move in a cylinder filled with viscous fluid. When an external load is applied to the damper, the membrane deforms, opening the slits. The flow of viscous fluid through the slits generates a damping force. The phenomenological model of the damper is based on the notion that the slit membrane moves according to the fundamental axisymmetric vibration mode of a circular membrane. The slit membrane blocks the entire radius of the pipe in the state of equilibrium when all slits are closed. As the membrane moves, the opening area of the slits varies depending on its deformation. This gives a nonlinear damping characteristic. The damping constant depends on the input displacement and velocity, which is the reason for the nonlinearity of the damping characteristic. From the phenomenological model, the nonlinear characteristic of the drag force is obtained. The performance of the damper is simulated using a mass–spring–damper system. Two cases of harmonic excitation and impulse excitation are analyzed. The results show that, using the slit membrane damper, the suppression of dynamic loads is more effective compared to a conventional linear damper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This investigation explores the interactions of different shaped debris with an array of obstacles under subcritical flow conditions, representative of a flood associated with a storm surge or tsunami. Panels, blocks and cylinders were used in a flow channel, as analogues for house panels, cars/containers and trees respectively, whilst some tests used a mix of debris. The backwater effect due to the blockage caused by the obstacles was most (least) significant for panels (cylinders). There was some evidence that smaller key log types and higher flow rates led to smaller dams. It was also evident that key logs formed at different depths depending on debris shape; debris shape also determined the vertical shape of the dam. Capture efficiency had a broadly negative (positive) correlation with the Froude number (permeability). Also, from video footage there were examples of the debris moving more quickly through partial dams. Finally, the drag force, deduced from only the water depths and the flow discharge, showed a clear relationship between drag force and Froude number, and a dependency of drag force on debris shape. Effects of Sn on microstructure, texture and magnetic properties of 2.7%Si-0.5%Al non-oriented silicon steel in industrial production were studied by X-ray diffraction and electron backscattering diffraction. Furthermore, combining first-principles simulation with White–Coghlan model calculation, grain boundary segregation of Sn was also investigated. In Sn-0.05 steel, cold-rolled sheet showed more ingrain shear bands and intensity of textures weakened significantly. Addition of Sn obviously reduced intensity of {111}<112> and increased intensity of {114}<481>; strong {100}<120> and nearly Goss textures appeared in annealed sheet. P1.5/50 decreased by 0.05W/kg, B50 increased by 0.005 T, and stability of magnetic properties were obviously improved of Sn-0.05. In the unit grain boundary layer (1 Å−2), the excess solute concentration on the grain boundary layer of Sn corresponding to 20,000–30,000 appm was 0.16–0.22 and gradually decreased with temperature and increased with intragranular solute content. As a segregation element, during annealing process of hot-rolled band and cold-rolled sheet, Sn exerted a drag force on the grain boundaries, thus inhibiting the grain growth. {114}<481> and {100}<120> oriented grains could grow selectively and distribute evenly by virtue of their mobility and quantity advantage higher than {111}<112>, thus improving magnetic properties and stability of 2.7%Si-0.5%Al non-oriented silicon steel. In this paper, we present a refined framework for the global-in-time well-posedness theory for the pressureless Euler–Navier–Stokes system and the optimal temporal decay rates of certain norms of solutions. Here the coupling of two systems, pressureless Euler system and incompressible Navier–Stoke system, is through the drag force. We construct the global-in-time existence and uniqueness of regular solutions for the pressureless Euler–Navier–Stokes system without using a priori large time behavior estimates. Moreover, we seek for the optimal Sobolev regularity for the solutions. Concerning the temporal decay for solutions, we show that the fluid velocities exhibit the same decay rate as that of the heat equations. In particular, our result provides that the temporal decay rate of difference between two velocities, which is faster than the fluid velocities themselves, is at least the same as the second-order derivatives of fluid velocities. The significant increase in thermal efficiency and the rate of energy exchange used in fuel dynamics and automobile coolants are leading to a better understanding of nanofluids. This computational analysis explores the thermal conductivity performance for radiative cross-flow of a nanofluid across an expanding/constricting sheet with a suction effect as a result of its application. To compute or calculate the magnificent point of nanofluid flow, the entropy, and asymmetrical heat source/sink effects are also elicited. The boundary layers traverse a stream-wise procedure for expanding and contracting sheets. Additionally, the study examines the features of heat transfer and cross-flow of nanofluids using numerical simulations. By employing similarity variables, the basic PDE equations of the current model are transformed into ODEs, and they are subsequently evaluated using the bvp4c method. Therefore, the effects of embedded flow variables on drag force, heat transfer rate, and entropy generation profiles have been framed using parametric research. Multiple solutions are offered for a specific range of the contracting parameter as well as the mass suction parameter. In addition, the heat transfer rate accelerates due to the heat source and decelerates due to the heat sink. The flow structure around limited-size vegetation patches is crucial for understanding sediment transport and vegetation succession trends. While the influence of vegetation density has been extensively explored, the impact of the relative diameter of vegetation stems remains relatively unclear. After validating the reliability of the numerical model with experimental data, this study conducted 2D-URANS simulations (SST k-ω) to investigate the impact of varying relative diameters d/D under different vegetation densities λ on the hydrodynamic characteristics and drag force of vegetation patches. The results show that increasing d/D and decreasing λ are equivalent, both contributing to increased spacing between cylinder elements, allowing for the formation of element-scale Kármán vortices. Compared to vegetation density λ, the non-dimensional frontal area aD is a better predictor for the presence of array-scale Kármán vortex streets. Within the parameter range covered in this study, array-scale Kármán vortex streets appear when aD ≥ 1.4, which will significantly alter sediment transport patterns. For the same vegetation density, increasing the relative diameter d/D leads to a decrease in the array drag coefficient C ¯ D and an increase in the average element drag coefficient C ¯ d . When parameterizing vegetation resistance using aD, all data points collapse onto a single curve, following the relationships C ¯ D = 0.34 ln a D + 0.78 and C ¯ d = − 0.42 ln a D + 0.82 . This study presents a computational analysis of fluid flow characteristics around two staggered arranged square cylinders using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). With Reynolds number (Re) fixed at 200, numerical simulations explore the influence of varying gap ratios (G) ranging from 0 to 10 times the cylinder size. Emphasis is placed on understanding the impact of cylinders spacing on flow structure mechanisms and induced forces. Investigation of fluid flow parameters includes vorticity behavior, pressure streamlines, and variations in drag and lift coefficients alongside the Strouhal number under different values of G. From the results, four distinct flow patterns emerge: single bluff body flow, flip flopping flow, modulated synchronized flow, and synchronized flow, each exhibiting unique characteristics. This study reveals the strong dependence of fluid forces on G, with low spacing values leading to complex vortex structures and fluctuating forces influenced by jet flow effects. At higher spacing values, proximity effects between cylinders diminish, resulting in a smoother periodic flow. The Strouhal number, average drag force and the rms values of drag and lift force coefficients vary abruptly at narrow gaps and become smooth at higher gap ratios. Unlike the tandem and side-by-side arrangements the staggered cylinders arrangement is found to have significant impact on the pressure variations around both cylinders. This investigation studied numerically the aerodynamical effects of different modifications in a model of a common sedan. Four car modifications as spoiler, wing profile spoiler, standard diffuser and curved diffuser and their combinations were reported. Using a three-dimensional sedan model created with Computer-Aided Design software, the modifications are applied and assessed their influence on aerodynamics at speeds ranging from 60 to 120 km/h. The spoiler, wing spoiler, standard diffuser and curved diffuser reducing the lift forces experienced by the vehicle. Three cases, spoiler, wing spoiler, and curved diffuser increase the drag forces Combining a curved diffuser and a spoiler significantly decreases lift forces by an average of 77.8%, albeit with a 15.3% increase in drag forces, by 120 km/h The synergy of a curved diffuser and a wing spoiler achieves a substantial 63.3% reduction of net vertical forces, with only a 7.9% increase in drag forces, by 120 km/h, offering improved control with lesser energy consumption in comparison to other combinations. Results show that modifications, greatly influence airflow interaction, with effects varying by speed. A comprehensive study of the nature of micropolar fluid on an unsteady MHD-free convective transference through a perforated sheet is discussed considering the suction and Lorentz's force effects. The corresponding similarity equations of temperature, momentum, concentration, and angular momentum equations have been modified into the non-dimensional similarity equations of the temperature, momentum, concentration, and angular momentum equations by utilizing the similarity technique. The modified equations have been resolved by exerting the shooting technique with the help of the finite difference method (FDM) through MATLAB. The fluid flow is inversely proportional to the changes in micro rotational effect (Δ). The concentration boundary layer gets thinner as the Schmidt number (Sc) advances and hence the concentration of the fluid decreases. Micropolar fluid helps reduce drag forces and also acts as a coolant. The heat transmission rate advances by around 391%, and 110% due to growing amounts of Pr from 0.71 to 7.0, and v 0 from 0.6 to 3.0, respectively. The surface couple stress decays by about 33%, 45%, and 36% due to increasing values of M from 0.6 to 3.6, ∆ from 3.0 to 6.0, and λ from 0.1 to 1.2, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study uses results of eddy‐resolving numerical simulations to investigate the open channel flow over large clusters of freshwater mussels (Unio elongatulus) partially buried in a rough, gravel bed. The density of the mussels forming the array varies from 26 to 500 mussels/m2. The flow structure is analyzed at large distances from the leading edge of the mussel bed, where the flow can be considered fully developed. The effects of changing the mussel bed density, the filtering discharge, the burial level and the roughness of the bed surface in which mussels are burrowed, are investigated in terms of flow field, turbulent structures, drag forces, and bed shear stresses. It is found that strong interactions occur between energetic eddies generated by the larger gravels on the exposed bed surface and by the mussel shells. Simulations results show that for a burial depth close to 50% and a ratio between the average gravel size and the mussel protruding height of 0.13, the shell induced turbulence becomes dominant for mussel bed densities around 50 mussels/m2. The influence of the bed roughness becomes less relevant with increasing mussel density, as the generation of energetic eddies is mostly controlled by mussel‐to‐mussel interactions. For fixed bed roughness, burial level and filtering velocity, the mean streamwise drag force and the associated drag coefficient for the exposed part of each mussel decrease with increasing mussel density, even if strong variations are observed for individual mussels. For constant mussel bed density and burial level, the mean streamwise drag force and the mean drag coefficient decrease slightly with increasing bed roughness. Increasing the burial level decreases not only the drag forces but also the drag coefficients because of the more streamlined shape of the top of the mussels. Strong active filtering acts toward decreasing the mean streamwise force and the mean drag coefficient. The spanwise drag forces contribute significantly to the total drag force, especially for high mussel bed densities. Based on smooth bed calculations, bed‐averaged shear stresses are reduced in highly dense clusters. Rare-earth mud and manganese nodules coexist on the seafloor around Minamitorishima Island. To investigate the feasibility of a pulp-lift system that can ensure economic efficiency by pumping manganese using rare-earth mud as the working fluid, we conducted pulp-lift experiments at a head of 5.0 m using a squeeze pump for mortar pumping. In the study, we used carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) as the working fluid, which is a pseudo-plastic fluid like deep muddy seawater. We investigated the effects of the viscosity of the working fluid and the pump pulsation characteristics on lifting. The results revealed that the drag force acting on the pumped ore increased as the fluid became more viscous and the pulsation period became higher, while the reverse flow rate increased due to the negative pulsation pressure. As part of the strategy to achieve net-zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions in international maritime shipping, there is ongoing exploration into the use of wind propulsion systems as auxiliary ship propulsion devices. When considering a rigid sail as the wind propulsion system, evaluating the performance of a single sail is relatively simple. However, assessing the performance of multiple sails is more challenging due to the interference between the sails and between the sails and the hull. In this study, the thrust characteristics of two rigid sails attached to a ship are investigated by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). This includes considering the interference effects between the sails themselves and between the sails and the hull. The research reveals the innovative optimized angle of attack for maximizing thrust under tailwind conditions. At 150° in relative wind direction, the best performance is achieved with a low angle of attack on the fore side sail and a high angle of attack on the aft side sail. At 180° in relative wind direction, a high angle of attack on the fore side sail and a low angle of attack on the aft side sail yield the best results. Here, a "low" angle of attack means that the lift force is greater than the drag force, while a "high" angle of attack means the drag force is greater than the lift force. In this study, the force in the ship's forward direction is only focused on optimizing the angles of attack of the two sails. However, the side forces caused by the sails are also significant for the ship's sailing conditions. Therefore, future work will involve optimizing the angles of attack under drifting conditions. An event-triggered neural adaptive cooperative control is proposed for the towing system (TS) with model parameter uncertainties and unknown disturbances. Different from ordinary multi-vessel formation control, the tugs and unactuated offshore platform in the TS are connected together by towlines, and the resultant tension of the towlines serves as the actual drag force for the platform. Initially, based on the radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), an adaptive RBFNN is designed to compensate unknown disturbances and model parameter uncertainties of the TS, and we use minimal learning parameter (MLP) algorithm to reduce the online learning parameters of adaptive RBFNN. Combined with dynamic surface technology and event-triggered control (ETC) mechanism, an event-triggered neural adaptive virtual controller is designed to obtain the desired drag force of the platform. According to the quadratic programming algorithm, the desired drag force is allocated as the desired tensions of towlines. Subsequently, the desired towline length and the desired position information of the tugs are obtained sequentially through the towline model and the position relationship between the tugs and the platform. Then, according to the desired positions of tugs, an event-triggered neural adaptive distributed cooperative controller is designed for achieving the multi-tug towing of the offshore platform. The ETC mechanism is introduced to reduce the communication burden within the TS and the execution frequency of the tugs' thrusters. Finally, the stability of the closed-loop system is proven using the Lyapunov theory, and the ETC mechanism proves that no Zeno behavior occurs. The present paper develops a new framework to predict the mean flow through an array of cylinders in which the flow around the array (array‐scale) and the flow around individual cylinders (element‐scale) are modeled separately using actuator disc theory and empirical drag models respectively, and then coupled through the net drag force. Applying this framework only requires knowledge of the array geometry and incident flow. The framework is validated using high‐fidelity direct numerical simulations for arrays of between 7 and 109 cylinders having different arrangements (staggered, concentric, random) and bounding shapes (circular, square) in both two‐ and three‐dimensional flows. In general, the framework outperforms existing models which require calibration and are only valid for part of the practical parameter space. The demonstrated scale separation suggests different combinations of element‐scale and array‐scale models/theories may be used for other arrangements of bluff bodies. Plain Language Summary: The temporally and spatially averaged velocity, or mean flow, within an array of cylinders is important for many practical applications including, for example, estimating the rates of sediment transport and nutrient uptake within a patch of aquatic vegetation, the hydrodynamic forces on offshore structures, and the efficiency of power generation with a turbine farm. However, a general predictive tool for mean flow is currently lacking. To develop this predictive capacity, this study uses the idea of scale separation to integrate models from different research fields, including the actuator disc theory originally developed for design of turbines and propellers, and element‐scale drag models initially proposed for aquatic vegetated flows, to develop a unifying, predictive, analytical framework to estimate the mean flow. The framework is validated using high‐fidelity direct numerical simulations of arrays of cylinders with different arrangements (staggered, concentric, random) and array shapes (square, circular). With only knowledge of the array geometry and incident flow, the framework predicts the mean flow exceptionally well across a wide range of practical flow conditions. This leads to a step‐change in our ability to predict the fraction of incoming flow passing through a porous array, hydrodynamic load on offshore structures, and sediment flux within aquatic vegetation systems when combined with bed load transport models. The framework could be an important guide for coastal and riverine restoration projects using aquatic vegetation and the design of offshore structures and turbine farms. Controlling microrobot locomotion in vessels and capillaries is crucial for precise drug delivery and minimally invasive surgeries. However, this is challenging due to the complex interactions with red blood cells (RBCs) and the difficulty navigating within the dense environment. Here, we construct a numerical framework to evaluate the relative resistance coefficient ( C r * ) of a microrobot propelled through RBC suspensions. Our experiments validate the numerical results. We find that C r * increases for smaller microrobots and higher hematocrit levels, while magnetic force strength weakly impacts C r * . C r * is smaller than the resistance coefficient of a macroscale robot estimated from the apparent viscosity of the RBC suspension. The aspect ratio of a prolate ellipsoidal microrobot influences C r * along its long-axis direction. Additionally, machine learning accurately predicts C r * . Understanding the dynamic response of trees to a strong wind is crucial to alleviating the damages and losses of tree forests caused by windstorms. Previous studies have elucidated small deformations of a broad range of tree species, yet mathematical models that can accurately pinpoint the location and severity of wind-induced damages are still lacking. To bridge this gap, the present work puts forward the first geometrically accurate, physics-based model to capture large deformation of trees induced by a strong wind. The proposed model incorporates a branched tree architecture to represent the topology of a realistic tree. The large, dynamic deformation of the trunk and branches of the tree is described by a system of nonlinear partial differential equations derived from structural theories rooted in classical mechanics. The aerodynamic loading is quantified based on the instantaneous relative velocity between the wind and the tree. The proposed model could successfully reproduce the effects of aerodynamic damping by capturing the nonlinear interplays between the wind and the tree, in contrast to prior analytical models that relied on empirical assumptions of the damping coefficients. The model further reveals a reduction in the drag force due to wind-induced shape reconfiguration, which is enhanced exponentially as a function of the wind speed. This study investigates pressure gradient dynamics within a porous medium in the context of two-phase fluid flow, specifically water and sand particle interactions. Using experimental data, we refine pressure correction coefficients within a numerical solution framework, employing the Semi-Implicit Method for the Pressure-linked Equations algorithm. Our findings highlight the relative nature of pressure gradient phenomena, with particle size and volume fraction emerging as crucial determinants. Graphical representations reveal a clear trend: an increase in volume fraction, up to 40%, across varying Reynolds Numbers, leads to a transition towards non-Newtonian behavior in the two-phase fluid system. Unlike the linear pressure gradient seen in single-phase fluid flow, the interplay between liquid and solid phases, along with drag forces, imparts a distinctly nonlinear trajectory to the pressure gradient in two-phase fluid flow scenarios. As the two-phase flow enters a porous medium, numerous factors come into play, resulting in a pressure drop. These factors include changes in cross-sectional geometry, alterations in boundary layer dynamics, and ensuing momentum fluctuations. In this study, the aerodynamic performance of a cambered wind turbine airfoil with a partially flexible membrane material on its suction surface was examined experimentally across various angles of attack and Reynolds numbers. It encompassed physical explanation at the pre/post-stall regions. The results of particle image velocimetry revealed that the laminar separation bubble was diminished or even suppressed when a local flexible membrane material was employed on the suction surface of the wind turbine blade close to the leading edge. The results of the deformation measurement indicated that the membrane had a range of flow modes. This showed that the distribution of aerodynamic fluctuations due to the presence of LSB-induced vortices was reduced. This also led to a narrower wake region occurring. Aerodynamic performance improved and aerodynamic vibration significantly lowered, particularly at the post-stall zone, according to the results of the aerodynamic force measurement. In addition to the lift force, the drag force was enormously reduced, corroborating and matching well with the results of PIV and deformation measurements. Consequently, significant benefits for a turbine blade were notably observed, including aerodynamic performance enhancement, increased aerodynamic power efficiency, and reduced aerodynamic vibration. This paper introduces a low-boom aircraft optimization design method guided by equivalent area distribution, which effectively improves the intuitiveness and refinement of inverse design. A gradient optimization method based on discrete adjoint equations is proposed to achieve the fast solution of the gradient information of target equivalent area distribution relative to design variables and to drive the aerodynamic shape update to the optimal solution. An optimization experiment is carried out based on a self-developed supersonic civil aircraft configuration with engines. The results show that the equivalent area distribution adjoint equation can accurately solve the gradient information. After optimization, the sonic boom level of the aircraft was reduced by 13.2 PLdB, and the drag coefficient was reduced by 60.75 counts. Moreover, the equivalent area distribution adjoint optimization method has outstanding advantages, such as high sensitivity and fast convergence speed, and can take both the low sonic boom and the low drag force of the aircraft into account, providing a powerful tool for the comprehensive optimization design of supersonic civil aircraft by considering sonic boom and aerodynamic force. To design a high-performance stubble-breaking device, studying the interaction mechanisms between blades and root–soil composites is urgent. A simplified experimental method was proposed to investigate the cutting process and the effects of key factors on cutting by conducting cutting experiments on remolded root–soil composites and maize root–soil composites. The results showed that the soil support force and root–soil interface force significantly impacted cutting. Higher soil compaction and root–soil interface forces helped avoid root dragging, but higher soil compaction and thicker roots led to greater resistance. The superposition and accumulation effects significantly increased the cutting force, especially when root distribution was denser; as the oblique angle and bevel angle increased, the root-cutting force and dragging distance first decreased and then increased. Compared with orthogonal cutting, the optimal angles were both 45° and reduced the root-cutting force by 60.47% and 15.12% and shortened the dragging distance by 22.33 mm and 8.76 mm, respectively. Increasing the slide-cutting angle and cutting speed helped reduce the root-cutting force and dragging distance; however, it also faced greater pure-cutting force. Consequently, the interaction mechanisms between blades and root–soil composites revealed in this study provide a design and optimization basis for stubble-breaking devices, thus promoting the development of no-till technology. Investigations of water flow movements affected by vegetation is a research hotspot in vegetation ecological restoration. The theory and equations of the flow velocity distribution under the influence of rigid vegetation are relatively mature. This study proposes a new drag force equation that varies with the vegetation bending angle and a new analytical solution of the velocity profile. Comparisons between the model calculation and experimental data, results showed that this new proposed model produced accurate simulations for flow through flexible vegetation for various deflections. In addition, this analytical model was verified to be applicable to rigid vegetation without a bending angle. Moreover, the features of the parameters adopted in this analytical equation are discussed, and the empirical equation for these parameters are presented. Vegetation plays a crucial role in river hydrodynamic processes, and the accurate prediction of canopy drag force is essential for effective river management and ecosystem protection. The interactions within the vegetation canopies must be quantified to understand their impact on drag force. Through a series of flume experiments, we conducted an investigation into the canopy interaction mechanism of rigid emergent aquatic vegetation, particularly focusing on the blockage and sheltering effects. Our experimental design includes various combinations of lateral and longitudinal spacing, as well as special single‐row and single‐column arrangements. This allowed us to provide a more precise understanding of how lateral and longitudinal spacing affect the blockage and sheltering effects. Furthermore, we introduced a unified reference velocity that combines two effects, based on which we have established a widely applicable drag model that can predict drag under various density conditions. Lastly, we proposed a critical characteristic value for quantifying drag. This value is instrumental in revealing the ultimate performance of drag under different spacing arrangements. Water–air trans-media unmanned vehicle is a kind of aircraft, which can freely fly in the air, sail in the water and pass through free surface. For trans-media aircrafts, the development process from air–surface to air–underwater and from submarine-launched drive to autonomous drive is investigated. By analyzing the characteristic of manta ray, flying fish and existing aircraft, this paper proposes a new water–air trans-media unmanned vehicle with flat dish-airfoil-shaped main body and telescopic NACA-type wing. Then the numerical method to calculate the lift and drag forces is established and validated by the results of classic NACA cases. On this basis, the flow field around the new vehicle is numerically simulated, and its lift–drag performances in different media (air and water) and ground effect are analyzed, comparing it with a model inspired by the Blackwing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). The findings illustrate the superior performance of the new vehicle in terms of lift and drag forces, offering an innovative design framework for water–air trans-media UAV applications. Addressing the challenges for detecting underwater damage to the structures with pile foundation, this study presents the design of an adsorption-operated robotic system. Initially, a prototype is proposed for an adsorption-operated robot that is equipped with an automatic movement mechanism. To account for the disturbance of the drag force in the control system, a hydrodynamic numerical model for the detection robot is established. The numerical results of the drag force are then integrated into the control system, leading to the design of a force-redeemed active disturbance rejection controller. Furthermore, a novel detection algorithm based on the image segmentation network UNet is developed for the automatic identification of damages. The performance of the controller and detection algorithm is evaluated against traditional methods. The results indicate that the proposed force-redeemed active disturbance rejection controller outperforms traditional PID and ADR controllers in terms of overshoot and adjustment time. Moreover, the developed detection algorithm exhibits superior performance in precision, F1 score, and mean intersection over union compared to the traditional algorithms of FCN, PSPnet, Deeplabv3, and UNet. Abstract This study presents a computational analysis of fluid flow characteristics around two staggered arranged square cylinders using the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). With Reynolds number (Re) fixed at 200, numerical simulations explore the influence of varying gap ratios (G) ranging from 0 to 10 times the cylinder size. Emphasis is placed on understanding the impact of cylinders spacing on flow structure mechanisms and induced forces. Investigation of fluid flow parameters includes vorticity behavior, pressure streamlines, and variations in drag and lift coefficients alongside the Strouhal number under different values of G. From the results, four distinct flow patterns emerge: single bluff body flow, flip flopping flow, modulated synchronized flow, and synchronized flow, each exhibiting unique characteristics. This study reveals the strong dependence of fluid forces on G, with low spacing values leading to complex vortex structures and fluctuating forces influenced by jet flow effects. At higher spacing values, proximity effects between cylinders diminish, resulting in a smoother periodic flow. The Strouhal number, average drag force and the rms values of drag and lift force coefficients vary abruptly at narrow gaps and become smooth at higher gap ratios. Unlike the tandem and side-by-side arrangements the staggered cylinders arrangement is found to have significant impact on the pressure variations around both cylinders. Overall, this research could contribute to a comprehensive understanding of staggered cylinder arrangements and their implications for engineering applications.

In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem of a two-phase flow system consisting of the compressible isothermal Euler equations and the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled through the drag force, which can be formally derived from the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck/incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. When the initial data is a small perturbation around an equilibrium state, we prove the global well-posedness of the classical solutions to this system and show the solutions tends to the equilibrium state as time goes to infinity. In order to resolve the main difficulty arising from the pressure term of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, we properly use the Hodge decomposition, spectral analysis, and energy method to obtain the L 2 time decay rates of the solution when the initial perturbation belongs to L 1 space. Satellites in very low Earth orbits can leverage the aerodynamics forces for control purposes. Three-axis attitude control can be achieved by adjusting the orientation of aerodynamic surfaces, benefiting from both drag and lift forces. However, complete control over the orbital motion of a satellite is unattainable using aerodynamic forces alone, as positive thrust cannot be generated. Nonetheless, this limitation does not apply when focusing on the control of a satellite formation. By properly modulating the orientation of panels, positive and negative relative forces can be generated. One of the favorite vehicles in cities and villages is a motorbike because it is practical and economical. So most of them modify their motorbikes. Starting from adding accessories such as a wind shield and rear box. An aerodynamic vehicle body shape can have an effect on reducing fuel consumption and minimizing forces that hinder the vehicle's speed. This research aims to see the difference in air resistance between motorbikes that have been modified and those that have not been modified. The simulation used uses a numerical simulation method with CFD (Computational Flow Dynamics) software. The form of modification is the addition of a wind shield and rear box. The average speed travelled in the flow simulation is 60 km/hour. The equations used in this research are the drag coefficient, velocity, drag force and flow trajectory equations. The research results show that the Windshield and Rear Box have a very significant influence on drag force. The higher the speed given, the greater the resistance force received. The addition of accessories such as a wind shield and rear box affects the drag force on a motorbike, which is the greatest at 205.28N for a speed of 80 km/hour. The largest drag coefficient is also obtained when these two accessories are added, namely 0.0071 at a speed of 80 km/hour.

Coronaviruses being capable of spreading through droplet contamination have raised significant concerns regarding high-capacity public rail transport, such as the metro. Within a rapidly moving railcar cabin, the internal airflow lags behind the bulkhead, generating internally induced airflow that accelerates droplet dispersion within a non-inertial reference system. This study investigates the impact of acceleration on the diffusion of cough droplets of varying sizes using computational fluid dynamics. The modified k–ε equation in ANSYS® Fluent was utilized to simulate droplet diffusion under different body orientations by adjusting the inertial force correction source term. Results indicate that droplets in the middle size range (50–175 μm) are primarily influenced by inertial forces, whereas smaller droplets (3.5–20 μm) are predominantly controlled by air drag forces. The principal regular satellites of gas giants are thought to be formed by the accumulation of solid materials in circumplanetary disks (CPDs). While there has been significant progress in the study of satellite formation in CPDs, details of the supply of satellite building blocks to CPDs remain unclear. We perform the orbital integration of solid particles in the protoplanetary disk (PPD) approaching a planet, considering the gas drag force by using the results of three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations of a local region around the planet. We investigate the planetary mass dependence of the capture positions and the capture rates of dust particles accreting onto the CPD. We also examine the degree of dust retention in the accreting gas onto the CPD, which is important for determining the ratio of the dust-to-gas inflow rates, a key parameter in satellite formation. We find that the degree of dust retention increases with increasing planetary mass for a given dust scale height in the PPD. In the case of a small planet (M p = 0.2 M Jup), most particles with insufficient initial altitudes in the PPD are isolated from the gas in the accreting region. On the other hand, in the case of a massive planet (M p = 1 M Jup), dust particles can be coupled to the vertically accreting gas, even when the dust scale height is about 10%–30% of the gas scale height. Fluidization bed reactor is an attractive method to synthesize and process quantities of functional nanoparticles, due to the large gas–solid contact area and its potential scalability. Nanoparticles fluidize not individually but as a form of porous agglomerates with a typical porosity above 90%. The porous structure has a significant effect on the hydrodynamic behavior of a single nanoparticle agglomerate, but its influence on the flow behavior of nanoparticle agglomerates in a fluidized bed is currently unclear. In the present study, a drag model was developed to consider the porous structure effects of nanoparticle agglomerates by incorporating porous-structure-based drag laws in the Eulerian–Eulerian two-fluid model. Numerical simulations were performed from particulate to bubbling fluidization state to evaluate the applicability of porous-structure-based drag laws. Results obtained for the minimum fluidization and bubbling velocities, bed expansion ratio, and agglomerate dispersion coefficient show that, compared with the drag law of solid sphere, the porous-structure-based drag laws, especially the drag law of fractal porous spheres, provide a closer fit to the experimental data. This indicates that the pore structures have a great impact on gas–solid flow behavior of nanoparticle agglomerates, and the porous-structure-based drag laws are more suitable for describing flows in nanoparticle agglomerate fluidized beds. Coupling the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with wind farm parameterization can be effective in examining the performance of large-scale wind farms. However, the current scheme is not suitable for floating wind turbines. In this study, a new scheme is developed for floating wind farm parameterization (FWFP) in the WRF model. The impacts of the side columns of a semi-submersible floating wind turbine on waves are first parameterized in the spectral wave model (SWAN) where the key idea is to consider both inertial and drag forces on side columns. A machine learning model is trained using results from idealized high-resolution SWAN simulations and then implemented in the WRF to form the FWFP. The difference between our new scheme and the original scheme in a realistic case is investigated using a coupled atmosphere–wave model. The results show that the original scheme has a lower power output in most of the grids with an average of 12 % compared to the FWFP scheme. The upstream wind speed is increased slightly compared to the original scheme (<0.4 m s -1), while the downstream wind speed is decreased but by a much larger magnitude (<1.8 m s -1). The distribution of the difference in turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) corresponds well to that of the wind speed, and the TKE budget reveals that the difference in TKE in the rotor region between the two schemes is mainly due to vertical wind shear. This demonstrates that the FWFP is necessary for both predicting the wind power and evaluating the impact of floating wind farms on the surrounding environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research has shown that exercise interventions requiring increased activation of the tibialis anterior (TA), the primary ankle dorsiflexor, can improve walking performance in individuals with foot drop. Correspondingly, heightened drag forces experienced during walking performed in water may augment TA activation during the swing phase of gait, potentially leading to improved walking gait on land. Therefore, this study aimed to compare surface electromyographic (sEMG) activation in the TA and medial gastrocnemius (GM) during gait performed in water versus on land. Thirty-eight healthy, recreationally active young adults, comprising 18 females and 20 males, participated in the study. Each participant completed 2 min walking trials under five conditions: land 2.5 mph, land 3.5 mph, water 2.5 mph, water 3.5 mph, and water 3.5 mph with added jet resistance. Stride kinematics were collected using 2-dimensional underwater motion capture. TA and GM, muscle activation magnitudes, were quantified using sEMG root-mean-square (RMS) amplitudes for both the swing and stance phases of walking. Additionally, TA and GM co-activation (Co-A) indices were estimated. Two-way within-subjects repeated measures analyses of variance were used to evaluate the main effects of and interactions between the environment and walking speed. Additionally, paired sample t-tests were conducted as a secondary analysis to investigate differences between walking in water at 3.5 mph with and without added jet resistance. Main effects and interactions were observed across various stride kinematics and sEMG measures. Notably, TA sEMG RMS during the swing phase of walking gait performed at 2.5 mph was 15% greater in water than on land (p < 0.001). This effect increased when walking gait was performed at 3.5 mph (94%; p < 0.001) and when jet resistance was added to the 3.5 mph condition (52%; p < 0.001). Furthermore, TA Co-A was increased during the stance phase of gait in water compared to on land (p < 0.001), while GM Co-A was reduced during the swing phase (p < 0.001). The findings of this study offer compelling evidence supporting the efficacy of aquatic treadmill walking as a potential treatment for individuals suffering from foot drop. However, further research is needed to evaluate whether a causal relationship exists between heightened TA activation observed during aquatic treadmill walking and improvements in voluntary dorsiflexion during gait. In this paper, using interfacial slip on the boundary, the exact solution is obtained for the Stokes flow through a couple stress fluid sphere which is embedded (implanted) in a porous medium with Brinkman's condition. Particle crushing takes place in a wide range of engineering applications and affects fluid flow through granular materials. This study examines volumetric changes and the evolution of hydraulic conductivity during particle crushing using a combination of high-stress experiments, data compilation from published studies and particle-scale numerical simulations. An asymptotically correct hyperbolic model fits void ratio versus stress data and provides reliable estimates of the yield stress. Alternatively, hydraulic conductivity follows a power law with void ratio and the trend extends into the grain crushing regime. Hydraulic conductivity diminishes rapidly as sand grains start crushing; the reduction in hydraulic conductivity can reach 1-to-4 orders of magnitude depending on mineral composition, particle shape and initial packing density. Crushing involves the progressive detachment of small fragments; these small particles move into the larger pores, increase the drag resistance, clog pore constrictions, and effectively hinder fluid flow after the yield stress. This article presents an analytical and numerical investigation on the quasi-steady, slow flow generated by the movement of a micropolar fluid drop sphere of at a concentrical position within another immiscible viscous fluid inside a spherical slip cavity. Additionally, the effect of a cavity with slip friction along with the change in the micropolarity parameter on the movement of the fluid sphere is introduced. When Reynolds numbers are low, the droplet moves along a diameter that connects their centres. The governing and constitutive differential equations are reduced to a computationally convenient form using appropriate transformations. By using the resulting linear partial differential equations for the stream functions and using the method of separation variables, we can obtain their solutions. General solutions for velocity fields are found using spherical coordinate systems, which are based on the concentric point of the cavity; this allows to obtain solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations internal and external to the spherical droplet. The vorticity-microrotation boundary condition is used in regard to the micropolar droplet case in a viscous fluid. The normalised drag forces acted upon the micropolar drop are illustrated via graphs and tables for diverse values of the viscosity ratio and drop-to-wall radius ratio, with the change of the spin parameter that attaches the microrotation to vorticity. The correction wall factor is shown to increase with an increase in the drop-to-wall radius ratio, when moving from the gas bubble case to the solid sphere case, with an increase in the micropolarity parameter, and with an increase in the slip frictional resistance. This study is relevant due to its potential uses in a variety of biological, natural, and industrial processes, including the creation of raindrops, the investigation of blood flow, fluid-fluid extraction, the forecasting of weather conditions, the rheology of emulsions, and sedimentation phenomena. To solve the limitation of speed in the operation of air-suction cotton precision seeding devices, a new crawler-type precision on-film seeding device was designed using an extended duckbill hole-forming device to produce hole-forming belts and lateral seed collection. Coupling simulation of seeding, and analysis of drag force and movement speed of cotton seeds were conducted on EDEM-CFD. A mechanical model of the operation was established, and the effects of the suction hole diameter, pressure relief block length, and wind pressure on seeding performance were analyzed. Regression models between influencing factors and seeding performance indices were established using response surface methodology. The test data were analyzed using Design Expert 10.0.3. The influence rules for each factor on seeding performance were established. The factors affecting the seeding qualified index exhibited the following order: air pressure > pressure relief block length > suction hole diameter. The optimization goals included defining the maximum value of a qualified single-seed index and the minimum value of the missing index, and the best parameter combination was obtained based on a suction hole diameter of 3.624 mm, pressure relief block length of 63.369 mm, and wind pressure of 3.797 kPa. According to the actual test conditions, the parameters were revised to include a suction hole diameter of 3.6 mm, a relief block length of 63.4 mm, and wind (air) pressure of 3.8 kPa for verification tests. The actual qualified single-seed index is 94.87% ± 0.98 %, the missing index is 1.45% ± 0.32%, and the multiple index is 3.68% ± 0.62%. The difference from the predicted value is within 5%, indicating that this study can provide a reference for the structural design and optimization of crawler-type on-film precision cotton seeding devices. The growth and diversification of tall buildings demands higher performance standards that encompass serviceability and resilience. In this respect, the control of air flow around tall buildings poses challenges to minimising the energy that could induce large vibrations or forces. The present investigation scrutinises the flow around a tall structure with variations on its surface roughness by adding balconies to the facade, as a form of passive control of the flow loads. This is conducted through flow simulations across optimised computational arrays that capture 3D effects. To illustrate the applicability of the proposed approach, two types of facades rotated 0 ∘ , 90 ∘ and 180 ∘ are considered while focusing on pressure and vorticity fields. It was found that the presence of balconies produces zig-zag patterns on the face where they are located, whereas balconies on the front facade reduce drag with respect to the smooth case. Furthermore, buildings with balconies on their lateral faces experience some increase in drag force and the improvement of the aerodynamics around the lateral pedestrian zones. No qualitative variations between triangular and rectangular balconies were found, excepting some changes in pressure magnitude on the rear side induced by balconies placed on the front and rear facades. Through the comparison of results, it was confirmed that the findings align with previous studies undertaken for medium and low-rise buildings. This reinforces the proposal of using such passive control measures to improve the aerodynamic performance of tall buildings. The study enables the quantification of flow configurations and forces on the building's faces. Some of the proposed passive control measures effectively mitigate pressure levels while causing large local disturbs on pressure and vorticity that should be attended to by designers of this type of facades. Assessing drag force and Reynolds stresses in turbulent flows is crucial for evaluating the stability and longevity of hydraulic structures. Yet, this task is challenging due to the complex nature of turbulent flows. To address this, physical models are often employed. Nonetheless, this practice is associated with difficulties, especially in the case of high sampling frequency where the inherent randomness of velocity fluctuations becomes mixed with the measurement noise. This study introduces a stochastic approach, which aims to mitigate bias from measurement errors and provide a probabilistic estimate of extreme stress values. To accomplish this, a simple experimental setup with a hydraulic jump was employed to acquire long-duration velocity measurements. Subsequently, a modified first-order autoregressive model was applied through ensemble simulations, demonstrating the benefits of the stochastic approach. The analysis highlights its effectiveness in estimating the uncertainty of extreme events frequency and minimizing the bias induced by the noise in the high-magnitude velocity measurements and by the limited length of observations. It is vitally critical to understand the dynamics of the non-Newtonian fluids model from an engineering and industrial perspective. Many industrial and technical activities, such as the extrusion of polymer sheets, the manufacturing of paper, and the development of photographic films, require non-Newtonian fluids. Energy transportation has numerous industrial applications, and classical heat and mass transfer laws do not accurately anticipate thermal and solute relaxation times. This study applies the modified Ohm law to heat and mass transport, utilizing Fick's and generalized Fourier concepts. And the primary purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of heat and mass transport in the magnetohydrodynamics-mixed convective flow involving a micropolar Casson fluid across the vertically inclined starching surface with multiple slip effects. Moreover, the study considers additional factors like thermal radiation, heat generation, chemical reactions, and the influence of thermophoretic to analyze both energy and nanoparticle concentration aspects comprehensively. To simplify the flow analysis, the original flow model is transformed into a couple of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by employing relevant similarity transformations. These ODEs establish a system that is solved numerically by using the Bvp4c solver through MATLAB. It is worth noticing that a more substantial estimation of the thermal and concentration relaxation parameters decays the fluid temperature and nanoparticle concentration, respectively, and the growth of the material parameter reduces the drag force, which consequently augmenting the fluid velocity. Furthermore, the enhancement occurs in the skin friction due to greater estimation of the micropolar parameter, while the Casson fluid parameter causes the opposite trend. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drag and lift are two important parameters to evaluate a vehicle's aerodynamic performance. Aerodynamic resistance (drag force Fd) prevents the movement of the vehicle and has a value proportional to the square of the velocity. That is, when the speed increases twice, the aerodynamic drag will increase fourfold. This article presents a plan to design a sport utility vehicle model with improved aerodynamics by using Ansys Fluent software to analyze pressure distribution areas that affect aerodynamics and the body. Based on the results obtained, the areas of stress and maximum pressure concentration have been identified. From this, a plan to improve the vehicle's exterior design has been proposed. After many iterations of the design and model optimization process, the aerodynamic drag coefficient CD was reduced by 3.06% compared to the original model. The revised design option is equipped with an airflow diffuser under the vehicle; the lifting resistance coefficient has been reduced from 0.0902 to 0.038, equivalent to 58.2%. The new proposed design of the model has reduced the vehicle's frontal drag by 2.04%. The research results have determined the aerodynamic coefficients CD and CL of the model car. Based on the results received, it is possible to compare them with the manufacturer's announced parameters and propose new design options that still ensure aesthetics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acoustic streaming enabled by a Lamb wave resonator (LWR) is efficient for particle trapping and enrichment in microfluidic channels. However, because Lamb waves combine the features of bulk acoustic waves and surface acoustic waves, the resulting acoustic streaming in the LWR occurs in multiple planes, and the particle flow behavior in this acoustofluidic system is largely unknown. Reported here are numerical simulations and laboratory experiments conducted to investigate the boundary conditions for particle motion inside a microvortex induced by an LWR. Upon dynamic capture, the particles' trajectories become orbital paths within an acoustic vortex. The suspended particles encounter two distinct acoustic phenomena, i.e., the drag force resulting from acoustic streaming and the acoustic radiation force, which exert forces in various directions on the particles. When the acoustic radiation force and the fluid drag force are dominant for large and small particles in a mixed solution, respectively, the large particles reside within the vortex while the small particles remain at its periphery. Conversely, when the acoustic radiation force is dominant for both types of particles, the distribution pattern is reversed. Elevated interstitial fluid pressure (IFP) within pathological tissues (e.g., tumors, obstructed kidneys, and cirrhotic livers) creates a significant hindrance to the transport of nanomedicine, ultimately impairing the therapeutic efficiency. Among these tissues, solid tumors present the most challenging scenario. While several strategies through reducing tumor IFP have been devised to enhance nanoparticle delivery, few approaches focus on modulating the intrinsic properties of nanoparticles to effectively counteract IFP during extravasation and penetration, which are precisely the stages obstructed by elevated IFP. Herein, we propose an innovative solution by engineering nanoparticles with a fusiform shape of high curvature, enabling efficient surmounting of IFP barriers during extravasation and penetration within tumor tissues. Through experimental and theoretical analyses, we demonstrate that the elongated nanoparticles with the highest mean curvature outperform spherical and rod-shaped counterparts against elevated IFP, leading to superior intratumoral accumulation and antitumor efficacy. Super-resolution microscopy and molecular dynamics simulations uncover the underlying mechanisms in which the high curvature contributes to diminished drag force in surmounting high-pressure differentials during extravasation. Simultaneously, the facilitated rotational movement augments the hopping frequency during penetration. This study effectively addresses the limitations posed by high-pressure impediments, uncovers the mutual interactions between the physical properties of NPs and their environment, and presents a promising avenue for advancing cancer treatment through nanomedicine. River water pollution is a key environmental issue to human society. How to effectively simulate the flow velocity and pollution transport in a vegetated river can provide a theoretical basis for solving such problems. Based on previous experimental data, this article uses the lattice Boltzmann method and random displacement method to simulate the velocity distribution and nutrient transport in multi-layer rigid vegetated rivers. The simulation results indicate that incorporating the drag force of the vegetation into the model according to different vegetation layers can effectively simulate the velocity in a multi-layer vegetated river. Incorporating the turbulent diffusion and mechanical diffusion effects of nutrients caused by vegetation into the model can effectively simulate the effects of multi-layer vegetation on nutrient transport. We present an experimental realisation of spatial spanwise forcing in a turbulent boundary layer flow, aimed at reducing the frictional drag. The forcing is achieved by a series of spanwise running belts, running in alternating spanwise direction, thereby generating a steady spatial square-wave forcing. Stereoscopic particle image velocimetry in the streamwise–wall-normal plane is used to investigate the impact of actuation on the flow in terms of turbulence statistics, drag performance characteristics, and spanwise velocity profiles, for a non-dimensional wavelength of λ x + = 397 . In line with reported numerical studies, we confirm that a significant flow control effect can be realised with this type of forcing. The scalar fields of the higher-order turbulence statistics show a strong attenuation of stresses and production of turbulence kinetic energy over the first belt already, followed by a more gradual decrease to a steady-state energy response over the second belt. The streamwise velocity in the near-wall region is reduced, indicative of a drag-reduced flow state. The profiles of the higher-order turbulence statistics are attenuated up to a wall-normal height of y + ≈ 100 , with a maximum streamwise stress reduction of 45% and a reduction of integral turbulence kinetic energy production of 39%, for a non-dimensional actuation amplitude of A + = 12.7 . An extension of the classical laminar Stokes layer theory is introduced, based on the linear superposition of Fourier modes, to describe the non-sinusoidal boundary condition that corresponds to the current case. The experimentally obtained spanwise velocity profiles show good agreement with this extended theoretical model. The drag reduction was estimated from a linear fit in the viscous sublayer in the range 2 ≤ y + ≤ 5 . The results are found to be in good qualitative agreement with the numerical implementations of Viotti et al.
