This study aims to analyze the graphical comprehension of 5th and 6th grade students in multigrade rural primary education in Chile. The theoretical framework considers levels of reading and semiotic levels in statistical graphs. A qualitative methodology of descriptive level is followed, using content analysis method for the responses given to a questionnaire by 22 students from five multigrade rural schools. The results show that, overall, students do not encounter difficulties in answering questions at level 1 reading (literal reading), but difficulties gradually increase as the reading level increases. Regarding semiotic levels, difficulties arise in constructing graphs using data distribution (semiotic level 3) and completing a graph with two data distributions (semiotic level 4).

Online learning has become an important advance in education in the last decade. We developed an online learning system related to land and tree measurements. University students were given pre- and postexposure surveys for two courses offered within the online system. Surveys were designed to assess whether the knowledge level and confidence of students increased through interaction with the online system. A final assessment was conducted to understand user experiences with the online technology. Statistically significant increases in knowledge and confidence concerning land measurement concepts and tree measurement topics were evident among survey participants. Survey participants agreed that the course functioned properly, that graphics and images within the courses were useful, and that using the system prior to in-person instruction helped students better understand concepts.

The objective of this study was to find effect of Jazz smart classroom's online quiz on academic achievement of students at secondary school level. Experimental design was used in which two groups were selected one was control and other was experimental group. Experimental group was given a treatment of six weeks by using Jazz Smart Classroom's Online Quiz. A sample of 30 students of class 10 was selected. Convenience sampling technique was used. Instrument used for collection of data was pre-test and post-test. Twenty lessons were delivered by using Jazz Smart Classroom's Online Quiz. Same pre-test and post-test used. The test was validated by the experts from University of Okara. The reliability of test was determined by reliability analysis with SPSS. The t-test was used for the comparison of data of control and experimental group. The results of experiment showed that the mean scores of students in post-test which were taught by using Jazz Smart Classroom's Online Quiz scored significantly higher than those taught by using traditional method. Some recommendations were made for teachers and students to use online quiz for better teaching and learning. Government should take an initiative to use Jazz Smart Classroom's Online Quiz in high schools.

Vocational high schools in "3T" area on Bawean Island have limitations in human resources quality, equipment, production or practice tools, and industrial partnership, which differed from the vocational high schools located in advanced and developed areas. This research objective is to discover the description of employability to the vocational high school students in "3T" area in Bawean island. The research method applied was the qualitative method using the phenomenology approach. The data collection was obtained through semi-structured interviews. This research participant was eight students at vocational high school "X," "Y," "Z," and "W" schools in Bawean Island, which is one of the "3T" area. The analysis method in this research was content analysis. This research result shows that students in the "3T" area were showing their effort to prepare themselves in facing the job market by enhancing their employability in learning activities within the class or practice in the laboratory. The students' employability includes skills, knowledge, comprehension, personality, career identity, social and human relations, and personal adaptability. Students realize that they are in the "3T" area and must work harder to improve their work skills so as not to lose their jobs.

The issue of students' difficulties in solving context-based mathematics problems has been extensively investigated by numerous studies. However, limited study focus on how pre-service primary school teacher (PSPSTs) encounter difficulties in solving context-based fundamental mathematics problems. To fill this gap, this study aims to investigate PSPSTs' difficulties encountered while solving context-based mathematics tasks by identifying the error type they made based on the error classification proposed in Newman Error Analysis (NEA). This is an error analysis study with a summative qualitative content analysis approach involving 87 PSPSTs in an Indonesian Islamic University. Data were collected through a test, in-depth interviews and document analysis of the PSPSTs' responses. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Qualitative content analysis was performed using Atlas.ti software. The findings revealed that many PSPSTs encounter difficulties in solving context-based problems. Approximately 22.1% of PSPSTs committed errors in comprehension, 17.5% each in reading and encoding, 14.7% in transformation, and 8.7% in process skill. Furthermore, the findings indicated a hierarchical structure in the occurrence of errors. Errors in the early stages have a high potential to cause errors in subsequent problem-solving stages. All the results are discussed, along with their implications for practice and suggestions for future research.

The present educational intervention study focused on addressing some areas of improvement in the teaching and learning of trigonometric ratios in high school students. A diagnostic evaluation was performed that revealed an instrumental understanding of trigonometric concepts by the students. Subsequently, a didactic sequence was implemented that incorporated practical applications of trigonometric ratios in the context of displacement vectors. The results of the study indicated significant improvements in students' understanding after the intervention, marking a shift toward relational understanding. This proposal is presented as an effective strategy and suggests promising ways to improve pedagogy in this field.

The present study explores the integration of critical thinking skills concepts in agricultural project management instruction at the undergraduate level, using the traditional classroom theoretical approach and a blended learning model. The study, encompassing 118 undergraduate students, compares the effectiveness of these methods in enhancing students' understanding, measured through examination scores, group presentations, and students' overall perceptions of the use of the methods. Students achieved a mean examination score of 64.82% under the traditional approach and 72.66% for the blended learning approach. Statistical analysis, including a t-test, revealed significant differences favoring the blended approach. Additionally, performance assessments using six criteria during presentations yielded varied mean scores. ANOVA analysis showed a significant difference among the groups, and post hoc tests highlighted distinctions between specific groups' means, emphasizing the effectiveness of blended learning in enhancing students understanding. Students' perceptions, gathered through a 5-point Likert scale, underscored satisfaction with the blended approach due to its flexibility, catering to diverse learning styles, and fostering critical thinking skills. We recommend institutions strengthen project management instruction by adopting blended learning, emphasizing critical thinking, and prioritizing continuous assessment and student-centric approaches since they cultivate an engaging learning experience, preparing students for managing future complexities on projects. Basketball, as one of the most popular sports courses in Chinese colleges and universities, has always been taught in a traditional ball teaching method, which has caused many problems in students' learning effects, such as poor basketball tactics, weaker physical fitness and so on. Therefore, it is imperative to reform the basketball courses in colleges and universities. Accordingly, this paper is aimed to explore the effects of the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGFU) method in basketball courses on male students from the Class of 2023, a university in Shanghai, China, in terms of their basketball tactics and physical fitness. The study sampled 60 students randomly selected from 1850 students who took the optional basketball courses. The selected students were divided into two classes, either with 30 students: the experimental classes taught with the TGFU method and the control class taught with the traditional method. The data were collected from the pre-tests and post-tests of both classes and analyzed by the tool Statistic Package for Social Science (SPSS 24.0). Including the calculation of average values and standard deviation for T-test. It is found that the TGFU adopted in the basketball courses has significantly improved students' basketball tactics and physical fitness, and that this method is advised to apply in college courses for students of all grades.

Potentially serving as the primary national literacy initiative, the Reading Seed Programme (RSP) by PUSTAKA Negeri Sarawak aims to enculturate a reading culture from an early age. For instance, RSP was invented to promote reading culture by having the pregnant mother read to their infant until the child was three years old. The process is vital to helping children learn to read from a young age and eventually empower them to be independent readers for life. Particularly, the objectives of RSP are to promote reading habits by getting parents to read to their children, strengthen a child's vocabulary, and develop their confidence, especially in reading. Thus, this paper is primarily designed to investigate the demographic differences between RSP participation and the programme's objectives, i.e., reading habits, parent's engagement, vocabulary ability, and confidence development. To assess how well the RSP achieved its goal of assisting toddlers in developing their confidence as readers. An online survey yielded 385 completed responses, representing a 92.33% response rate among RSP participants. The key findings indicated that the age of the child, mode of joining the programme, and year received the RSP's kits are the most important indicators of the usefulness of the programme (RSP and RSP's kits) and the programme's objectives attainment, especially in straightening the child's vocabulary and comprehension and developing their confidence, especially in reading and knowledge. Nonetheless, the results of this study highlighted the novelty of the early literacy programme of the RSP in cultivating the reading culture, parent-child engagement in reading, and preparing children to acquire knowledge.

The use of #digitalpowerups is a technique that involves associating keywords with prompts in online discussion forums, which enables students to have more choice and voice. These powerups not only help structure responses but also enrich discussions and develop academic skills necessary for online assignments. The approach leverages the social media interaction space of discussion forums by introducing hashtags that remind students of the prompt being addressed and indicate the level of Bloom's being engaged. By using the powerups, students can engage in mid-levels and higher-order levels of Bloom's, along with the lower levels that they typically engage in based on the design and facilitation of the discussion. Students typically participate in the lower levels of Bloom's taxonomy (#remember, #understand) due to the way the discussion is structured and facilitated. However, the use of #digitalpowerups encourages students to move beyond these levels and engage in mid-levels (#apply, #analyze, #evaluate) and higher-order levels (#create, #connect) during discussions. The powerups also scaffold or frame student responses with habits of mind skills. This article examines how the #digitalpowerups strategy supports learning in a virtual community for Environmental Concerns in the Environmental Sociology Course through content analysis of student discussion postings. The primary data (total of 375 postings) were collected from the Environmental Sociology Class throughout the following academic years: Fall 2020 (96 postings), Fall 2021 (67 postings), Spring 2022 (92 postings) and Spring 2023 (120 postings).

Students believed physics was one of the most challenging sciences in education, and their interest in learning physics was lacking. Therefore, this study aims to enhance students' understanding and creativity in the STEAM learning system on electricity by creating a project (Paper Circuit) using the students' creativity at the junior high school level - quantitative research with a pre-experimental design used for this study. The population is 8th grade and 9th grade (50 students adapted to the curriculum used in the school) in one of the Junior Secondary Schools located in Bandung and Cimahi, Indonesia. The data is obtained from the pretest-posttest results, which show that the average pre-test score was 57.04 and the post-test score was 76.64. The nonparametric test was tested using the Wilcoxon test to measure student understanding. The results from e Wilcoxon are 0.000, which shows sig. <0.05, which means there is a significant difference between pre-test and post-test. Students' creativity is obtained from the Creativity Product Analysis Matrix (CPAM), and the result for Project 1 is 73.71%, categorized as enough, and Project 2 is 83.13%, categorized as good. Based on the result, Paper Circuit STEAM project-based learning can enhance student understanding and creativity. STEAM project-based learning can be used as an alternative teaching strategy in junior secondary school.

Through signs and symbols, language serves as a means of expressing ideas and sentiments. These signs and symbols are used to encode and decode the information. The world has many different languages in use. As their first language, a baby learns their mother tongue. From birth, he or she is exposed to this language. Any additional language that is learned or acquired is referred to as a second language. There are two definitions of SLA, which stands for second language acquisition. It is a term that is generally used to describe learning a second language. To be more explicit, it is the name of the theory that outlines how individuals learn a second language. As we focus on speaking, this largely unconscious process happens. It is comparable to the acquisition of a second language, which explains how formal language teaching helps us acquire languages more deliberately. The ideas that the teacher can create communication contexts that support language learning, that language learning progresses naturally, that affective filters exist that hinder language learning, especially for adults, and that input is of utmost importance are all implications for the language classroom. This study aims to investigate the impact of language training on young children's language acquisition. The technique is qualitative and draws its methods from literature reviews.

Literary discussions are widely utilized in education, yet their profound impact on students' comprehension requires in-depth exploration. This paper delves into the influence of literary discussions on student comprehension and examines how these discussions can enhance students' understanding and analytical skills. Through literature reviews and case analyses, this study investigates teaching strategies, student engagement levels, classroom ambiance, and other factors involved in literary discussions, revealing the potential mechanisms through which literary discussions influence student comprehension. The paper explores variations in the application of literary discussions across different types of literary works (novels, poetry, drama, etc.) and their relationship with students' creative thinking. Finally, the paper provides recommendations to assist educators in effectively utilizing literary discussions to enhance students' comprehension skills. Students must have the opportunity to discuss literature in ways that provoke deep thought and meaning from each work they encounter. Therefore, English Language Arts teachers and instructors must be creative in finding unique ways in which they encourage their students to experience and respond to literature. This paper discusses a variety of strategies to implement in virtual and in-person classrooms, such as Socratic seminar, Teacher-led as a facilitator, Teacher-led as a promoter of diverse perspectives, Using student-generated discussion questions whole class, Using student-generated discussion questions in small groups, Using Close-ended questions, Using Open-ended questions, Inquiry-based, Making real-world connections to the literature, Literature Circles. These literary discussion strategies can be used for both fiction and nonfiction literature.

The aim of this study is to understand the relationship between teacher and student mindsets in relation to the student's comprehension of mathematics concepts. This study used a qualitative research type with a case study method. Participants in this study were 30 students and one teacher from one of the public junior high schools in Cianjur, Indonesia. Data sources used in this study were collected through teacher and student questionnaires, class observations, and semi-structured interviews. The class observation material was about linear function, and the learning process was carried out using the Complex Instruction (CI) approach based on growth mindset instruction. The questionnaire results show that teachers and students tend to have a fixed mindset. The fixed mindset of both the students and the teacher is particularly evident in their beliefs about the nature of math and their orientation towards student mastery and performance. The results of observations and interviews show a relationship between this mindset and student performance in class. Most students tend to show low performance in understanding linear function concepts. Based on the observations, students experienced problems in algebra thinking, had difficulty understanding mathematical concepts as a whole, and showed a lack of motivation and self-confidence. The results indicate that there is a significant relationship between the fixed mindsets of teachers and students towards students' lower performance in mathematics learning in the classroom.

Understanding by Design (UbD) is a well-known curricular methodology aiming at leading students to develop a deep understanding of the arguments proposed by teachers. Through a path including stimulating questions, student motivation, deepening of the argument, reflection, design and assessment of authentic performances, the students develop a broad understanding of the learned argument. While there are plenty of articles describing various experiences in classrooms and schools showing the benefits of UbD, rarely has this methodology been the object of experimental or quasi-experimental studies. A study conforming to quasi-experimental criteria has been performed in a Swiss vocational school, where a teacher taught two groups of students using UbD principles, while using with a third group a more usual teaching approach. The curriculum topic was the study of mathematical relations and functions. The results, collected during one school year, showed that the first two groups outperformed the third and that the effect of UbD lasted at least for one school year. Since the teacher remained the same, we can likely attribute the outcome to the use of the methodology.

Within the past decade, there has been a shift in how our guiding professional documents conceptualise information literacy (IL) - evolving from a skills-based conceptualisation to one emphasising ways of thinking and knowing. This has been both productive and disruptive. Our professional documentation does not provide a framework for making this shift or for scaffolding learning to develop complex and sophisticated ways of thinking and knowing. In this study, we apply Bloom's revised taxonomy for educational objectives to instructor descriptions of IL (n=51) to develop a draft taxonomy that attempts to build a bridge between these two conceptualisations. The data was drawn from a survey that was administered to instructors and instructional support staff immediately preceding their participation in a multi-day teaching professional development workshop related to IL. We believe that this model has implications for how we approach the development of learners' IL with intentionality, both in collaboration with faculty and for our own teaching practices as librarians.

Game-based learning has gained significant attention from educational researchers because of its ability to create an engaging and enjoyable learning environment for students. However, there was a research gap regarding the design of game mechanics that specifically helped students understand abstract scientific concepts. Also, the impact of increased motivation, interest, and engagement on conceptual understanding remained uncertain. The objective of this study was, therefore, to analyze the efficacy of using analogy teaching as a learning design principle for creating game mechanics to improve students' conceptions of bioaccumulation and biomagnification. Additionally, the study aimed to investigate whether providing a clear analogy comparison after gameplay could have a significant impact on students' learning outcomes. The research also examined the correlation between students' enjoyment level during gameplay and their learning outcomes. An embedded experimental mixed methods design was utilized to address the research objectives. The participants were 54 undergraduate students from non-science disciplines. They were divided into two groups: the Game-based Learning [GL] group and the Game-based Learning with eXplicit analogy discussion [GLX] group. Both groups used a board game to learn about bioaccumulation and biomagnification. The GL group had reflective discussions about the concepts after playing the game. The GLX group had an additional task where they identified similarities and differences between the gameplay and the scientific concepts, and they explicitly discussed these through a worksheet provided before the discussion. Results showed that after engaging in game-based learning, both groups exhibited a significant improvement in their understanding of bioaccumulation and biomagnification, moving from incomplete or partial understanding to more scientifically accurate concepts. Notably, the GLX group scored higher in post-tests compared to the GL group. Despite high levels of enjoyment during gameplay, there was no correlation between this enjoyment and the post-test scores. An unexpected slight negative correlation was found between immersion during the game and post-test scores. Discussion and implementation of the research results were provided.

The objective of this study is to develop e-modules for bump pass learning for seventh-grade students. This study identified the problems and needs of students in learning bump pass skills, e-module eligibility and the effect of the e-module on students' bump pass skills. Two groups of seventh grades, two teachers serving as content experts and two media experts participated in this study at State Junior High School 1 Talawi. Five steps were used in conducting this research: analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. The researchers collected data through questionnaires, interviews, observation, documentation, expert testing and tests. The questionnaire, interview, observation and documentation results were analyzed using an interactive data analysis model. Expert test data were analyzed using the inter-rater agreement model and test result data were analyzed using an independent t-test. There are three findings in this research. First, the reason for the students' difficulties in learning bump passes is their lack of interest in the content found in their textbooks. They need learning media that are interesting and can be accessed through smartphones. Thus, e-modules are a suitable learning medium to solve problems and meet their needs. Second, the developed e-module was confirmed to have high content validity and meet the criteria for good learning materials and media based on the feasibility test results. Third, the e-module has positively and significantly affected students' understanding and bump pass skills. Thus, it is suggested that the module be used for teaching bump pass skills at other schools.

The sample mean in statistics is a concept of great importance, with its properties being extensively utilized in other areas, such as computer science. This research centers on the concept of the sample mean and its characteristics in a cohort of computer engineering students undertaking a required course in statistics at a university in the Netherlands. The objective of this study was to analyze students' comprehension of the fundamental structure, properties, and applications of the sample mean. A digital mini-course on sample mean was developed and employed with 97 students, who had the option to apply the concepts at their own pace. The action-process-object-schema (APOS) theoretical framework was utilized to analyze the interview responses of seven participants. The majority of participants were able to demonstrate an understanding of the Process conception of the sample mean, with only a minority demonstrating an understanding of the Object conception. The lack of comprehension of the sample mean hindered students' capacity to effectively utilize the associated applications and properties. These findings imply that educators should strive to ensure that students have a sound comprehension of the sample mean so that they are better equipped to work with related applications. Suggestions of this study and further research ideas are indicated.

Contribution: This article identifies possible ruptures between the ways fundamental notions of exact differential and exact differential equations (EDEs) are employed in mathematics courses and professional engineering disciplines. Background: Engineering students often experience difficulties with mathematics courses which may even lead to dropout from engineering programs. Students also face problems applying acquired mathematics knowledge in professional courses. Research is needed to understand how fundamental mathematics concepts are used in advanced engineering courses. Research Questions: How are the notions of exact differential and EDEs used in mathematics and engineering courses? What potential learning difficulties originate from different institutional practices and how can they be addressed? Methodology: The anthropological theory of the didactic is employed to analyze how six different STEM disciplines approach fundamental concepts of exact differential and EDEs. Distinctions in praxeologies associated with different institutions reveal possible learning difficulties students face relating new knowledge in engineering disciplines to that acquired in mathematics courses. Findings: Student learning can be facilitated by bridging the way exact differentials are introduced in Calculus and Differential Equations. Student conceptual understanding can be facilitated through the cross-disciplinary collaboration between mathematicians and engineers in the development of new courses and study programs.

Valid consent requires the potential research participant understands the information provided. We examined current practice in 50 proposed Clinical Trials of Investigational Medicinal Products to determine how this understanding is checked. The majority of the proposals (n = 44) indicated confirmation of understanding would take place during an interactive conversation between the researcher and potential participant, containing questions to assess and establish understanding. Yet up until now, research design and review have not focussed upon this, concentrating more on written material. We propose ways this interactive conversation can be documented, and the process of checking understanding improved.

This study explored the experiences of seven first-year university students in Johannesburg, South Africa. Recognising storytelling as a lens to reveal identity, this study focused on student experience narratives as a tool to better understand their transition from school to university. It examined the narrated experiences of these students as a means to reveal their student identities. The qualitative study utilised a case study design type to address the research question: "What do first-year students' transition narratives reveal about their emerging student identities?" This paper focuses on a thematic analysis that was used as a tool to analyse participants' narrated experiences. The analysis resulted in five broad themes, namely that student identities in their first-year journeys were formed and influenced by interpersonal experiences, intrapersonal experiences, pre-commencement institutional experiences, experiences of formal learning, and learning experiences beyond the classroom. Despite encountering multiple challenges in their new environment, the students derived benefit through capitalising on their personal strengths as tools to adjust to the demands of their new institution. These tools were crucial resources used by participants to adjust to and ultimately flourish in their first year.

A key component of student mathematics achievement relates to the cognitive domains. This paper examines student mathematics achievement in three cognitive domains (knowledge, comprehension, reasoning) as per different achievement grades, across four years (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019), and by gender. This study used the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) mathematics results across four years from the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), which is the main public examination board in the Caribbean. The sample constituted 69,945 public school students from 161 secondary schools in Jamaica. The study found a regular pattern of cognitive domain performance at all grade levels and in each of the four years under consideration. Students performed best in the knowledge domain, followed by comprehension, and then reasoning. Students with the highest overall achievement demonstrated the highest achievement across the three domains and there was also a strong, significant, positive correlation between students' overall grades, that related to knowledge, comprehension, reasoning, and the cognitive domains. Another key finding was that for the knowledge and comprehension domains there was a significant difference in the performance of males and females in favour of females, but the related effect sizes were minimal. Practical implications and potential directions for future research are discussed.

The potential of ChatGPT is explored as an assistive technology tool within the framework of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to provide targeted support for college students with disabilities. As colleges and universities strive to promote inclusive practices, the implementation of UDL principles has gained significance. ChatGPT's interactive conversational interface aligns seamlessly with UDL, offering personalized assistance, promoting comprehension, and creating engagement opportunities among diverse learners. Numerous examples are provided, which align with both the universal design framework and the needs of learners receiving accessible and assistive services on a college campus. This paper identifies the possibilities for ChatGPT as an accommodation tool to significantly impact and improve the inclusive and equitable learning experiences of college students with disabilities.

This paper discusses the implications of health literacy during the COVID-19 pandemic for adults with lower literacy skills. It highlights the challenges faced by individuals in understanding complex health information and emphasizes the role of adult educators in providing trustworthy and comprehensible health information. Incorporating health literacy into adult education programs has shown positive impacts on students' self-efficacy and health knowledge. Overall, improving health literacy in the ABE classroom can empower individuals to make informed health decisions.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate student learnings from an online community food security service-learning course in which students self-selected a community partner for an in-person service experience. Four major themes emerged from the data: (1) "food insecurity doesn't have a single face," (2) understanding of the complexities and nuances of food insecurity, (3) use of emotion to describe and discuss the service component of the service-learning experience, and (4) expression of appreciation and respect for organizations working to address food insecurity. The findings of this study support a scalable framework for online service-learning courses where students self-select their community partners.

The purpose of this study was to analyze edutainment modules based on local excellence in Pantai Utara of Indonesia in terms of students' conceptual comprehension abilities. The edutainment module based on local excellence on Pantai Utara of Indonesia was developed with the Borg and Gall models developed. The development phase of the ethno-edutain module adds preliminary studios, product development and validation, and product trial trials. In testing the product, a large-scale trial was conducted. The effectiveness test was carried out on a large-scale trial with research subjects of fourth grade students at SD IT Umar Bin Khattab. The effectiveness of the ethno-edutainment module was accepted using test techniques. Based on N-gain trials Increased pretest and posttest scores of students produced 8 students increased in the high category, 21 students increased in the moderate category, and 3 students increased in the low category.

Art is a common approach for communicating and educating about science, yet it remains unclear the extent to which science art can benefit varied audiences in varied contexts. To examine this gap, we developed an art exhibit based on the findings of two publications in disease ecology. In study 1, we asked visitors with varying formal science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education backgrounds to complete a survey about their interest in science research before and after viewing the exhibit. In study 2, we recruited upper-level ecology undergraduate students to receive one of three treatments: engage with the art exhibit, read the abstracts of the papers, or do neither. Students completed a comprehension quiz immediately after their learning treatment and again 2 weeks later to evaluate retention. Following the exhibit, visitors who did not report a career or major in STEM showed a greater increase in research interest than visitors who did report a career or major in STEM. For the ecology undergraduate students, comprehension quiz scores were higher for students in the abstract group than the art exhibit group, while both groups scored higher than the control group. Retention of information did not significantly differ between the three groups. Overall, these findings suggest that science art exhibits are an effective method for increasing the accessibility of science to broader audiences and that audience identifiers (e.g., level of formal education in STEM) play an important role in audience experience of science communication and science education initiatives.

Technology-driven interactions are becoming commonplace, particularly as online classes, telecommuting, and virtual meetings across distances and time zones have all increased in popularity. Platforms such as Google Meet, Skype, Webex, and Zoom use synchronous audio-visual communication supported by text-based chat, emoticon responses, and other supplementary functions. Given this uptick in the use of video conferencing with dynamic integrated features, it is important to understand how attention and cognitive resources may be taxed in these environments, and what that may ultimately do to participants' ability to comprehend the target content. In the current study, we investigated the impact of topically-relevant student-initiated text chat frequency on comprehension during an online lecture. The findings revealed that chat involvement alone does not affect learning itself. Chat activity was found to not be a distraction but in fact, a facilitator of increased confidence in learning in an online lecture environment when controlling for other outside distractions. Overall, the findings suggest that relevant chat content is not distracting and can be helpful in reinforcing concepts through supportive examples in adjacent modalities.

In this study, the effect of teaching based on the 5E instructional model on students' conceptual learning was investigated. The participants consisted of three inclusion students with mild mental disabilities who were studying in the sixth grade of a secondary school. A lesson plan based on the 5E teaching model was designed, focusing on the curriculum standard "S/he describes that matter has a particulate and distanced structure." within the "Matter and Heat" unit of the sixth-grade science course. While developing the lesson plan, different teaching methods-techniques were included in the learning activities to address the needs and interests of the students based on the related literature and interviews conducted with the class teacher, students, and parents. In the current study, it was concluded that the 5E model-based teaching, which was prepared by taking into account the student needs and different teaching methods-techniques, was effective in supporting students' conceptual learning.

In this article we address the historical and epistemological study of infinity as a mathematical concept, focusing on identifying difficulties, counter-intuitive ideas and paradoxes that constituted implicit, unconscious models faced by mathematicians at different times in history, representing obstacles in the rigorous formalization process of this mathematical concept. It is shown how the active and conscious questioning of these models led to a process of axiomatization of mathematical infinity, which was completed with the works of Cantor (1883) and Robinson (1974). The implemented methodology is supported by a qualitative and argumentative bibliographic research based on content analysis from a meta-ethnography. From this research, information is obtained about the unconscious mathematical structures students are confronted with and the conscious patterns of reasoning they must develop to overcome difficulties and obstacles that these models produce, and thus achieve an adequate understanding of mathematical infinity.

This study aims to determine the graphical literacy levels of middle school mathematics teachers. The participants of the study consisted of 33 middle school mathematics teachers working in different provinces. The data of the study were collected with the help of the graphical literacy test created by the researchers. The data were analyzed by content analysis method. As a result of the study, it was seen that the teachers were more successful in the questions that required reading the data in the graph. It has been revealed that teachers are unsuccessful in reading beyond data questions that require higher-level thinking. In addition, the teachers had the most difficulty creating the graphs. In other words, it was determined that the graphical literacy levels of the teachers were low. Therefore, it is thought that studies to improve the graphical literacy skills of teachers in in-service training programs will be important.

This study aimed to: (1) describe the teachers' level of understanding of Domestic Activity Daily Living (DADL) learning for students with ID; (2) describe the activities that the teachers possibly performed, especially in systematic instructions (SI); and (3) the teachers' level of understanding of integrating functional academics in DADL. The quantitative descriptive method is the main method with a qualitative explanation. Interview instruments were used to explore teachers' understanding of DADL. The data analysis used the percentage of the teacher's response frequency, while the qualitative explanation used tags. This research reveals that teachers understand activities to determine learning objectives, but still do not understand activities to provide feedback. The teacher fully understands the gradual learning behaviour as a characteristic of SI. However, teachers do not yet understand how to integrate functional academics in DADL learning for students with ID using a description of the steps in a systematic instruction strategy and other forms of learning manners.

This study aims to describe metacognitive interventions for students who experience suspension of sense-making when solving integration problems based on the characteristics of students' thinking. This research applied a qualitative research approach and provided essay tests followed by task-based interviews to classify students who experience suspension of sense-making into two categories based on their thinking characteristics namely pure procedural and mixed conceptual-procedural. The metacognitive intervention in this study was carried out by giving metacognitive questions to the participants based on their thinking characteristics. The metacognitive questions given included comprehension, connection, strategy, and reflection questions. The results of this study indicated that mixed conceptual-procedural students were able to raise their sense-making earlier than pure procedural students. It can be concluded that pure procedural students need metacognitive intervention in the form of complete metacognitive intervention while mixed conceptual-procedural students only need partial metacognitive intervention.

This study aimed to know whether the use of online communicative speaking tasks can enhance the speaking skills of the ninth graders of a private junior high school in Mungkid, the Province of Central Java, and how well their speaking skills improved. This research was action research that was divided into four stages. Those were reconnaissance, plan, action and observation, and reflection. The research involved 24 students in 9A class of a private junior high school in the academic year of 2022/ 2023. The research was done in two cycles, consisting of eight meetings. The data of the research were collected through quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were from speaking tests and questionnaires. Meanwhile, the qualitative data were obtained from interviews and observation. The quantitative data were analyzed by comparing students' mean scores that were gained from students' speaking performance pretest and post-test. The qualitative data analysis employed Miles, Huberman & Saldana's (2014) interactive model that consists of data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The research findings showed that using online communicative speaking tasks effectively enhanced students' speaking skills and engagement. The result of the post-test showed that there were consistent improvements in students' mean scores in pre-cycle (10.48), cycle I (13.69), and cycle II (18.50). The total improvement from pre-cycle to cycle II was 8.02 points. It indicated that the students had improved in some aspects of speaking skills.

The use of digital technologies in teaching and learning has proven to be effective in aiding students' understanding of difficult concepts. Hence this study sought to find the effectiveness of ICT in teaching concepts of genetics which have been indicated as one of the biology concepts Ghanaian senior high school students find challenging. The study used two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The instrument used for data collection is an achievement test. A pre-test was administered to both groups to ascertain their level of achievement. The groups were then taught genetics, followed by the post-test. The experimental group was taught using ICT tools, while the control group was taught using the traditional teaching method. The research findings revealed that students taught using ICT performed better than those taught by the traditional teaching method. Based on the findings, it was concluded that using ICT tools in teaching genetics could serve as an appropriate means for teaching genetics since it aided in improving students' understanding of genetic concepts. Hence, it is recommended that teachers adopt ICT in their teaching methods rather than the traditional method. Also, school leaders and policymakers should also provide the needed support systems to enhance ICT integration practices.

This study examined how metacognitive knowledge and locus of control are associated with understanding mathematical jokes in students with and without learning disabilities. This study looked at a sample of 60 ninth-grade students of which 30 had a learning disability diagnosis and 30 had no learning disabilities. Students were tested using three instruments: a metacognitive knowledge questionnaire, a locus of control questionnaire, and a questionnaire to gauge understanding of mathematical jokes. The results point to a significant correlation between these three variables. Students with learning disabilities presented lower performance on all measures compared with students without learning disabilities. In view of the marked gaps between the two populations of students, it is important to support students with learning disabilities in the areas of metacognitive knowledge and locus of control. This may help improve their academic achievements in mathematics and other school subjects, and may have a beneficial effect on their social interactions and on dropout rates.

Official communications and media news in Greece about the COVID-19 pandemic very often involve a multitude of numerical concepts and mathematical relationships, which are presented in different forms and in various contexts. This paper reports selected findings of a survey among adults, which had two aims. First, to investigate their subjective assessments concerning the difficulties encountered in reading and understanding such numerical information, embedded in texts and presented by infographics and time-series graphs. And second, to investigate their assessments of the usefulness of such numerical information, presented in visual forms. A convenience sample of 310 adults responded to an online questionnaire. The main conclusion from the analysis of these data is that a considerable number of the participants, although relatively highly educated, assess themselves as having difficulties in reading and understanding numerical information concerning COVID-19. Namely, about 9% report difficulties with information included in textual forms, while regarding visual presentations the percentage ranges from 10% to 35%. Yet more than half of the adults surveyed assess the presentation of numerical information in visual forms as useful for comprehension. Furthermore, the distributions by gender, education, and age of participants' answers to our questionnaire generally show no substantial differences among them. These findings advise caution regarding communications or announcements that involve even simple numerical concepts and mathematical relationships concerning COVID-19 and health issues.

In recent years, developing students' knowledge integration of specific topics through effective teaching methods has been a concern in science education. This study explored an alternative teaching method, which aims to help lower secondary school students develop their knowledge structure about buoyancy towards a logically integrated conceptual framework through enhancing their understanding of the nature of buoyancy. Specifically, this study constructed a conceptual framework on buoyancy and a set of matching test questions to map out the three levels of knowledge integration of students, and designed and implemented a teaching experiment of promoting students' understanding of the nature of buoyancy. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis, it was found that the knowledge integration development of the treatment group was significantly better than that of the control group. The results indicated that enhancing students' understanding of the nature of buoyancy can effectively improve their knowledge integration of buoyancy. Accordingly, improving knowledge integration through enhancing students' understanding of the nature of the specific scientific concept may be a new direction for future research.

The interaction between student language use and sensemaking is an area in science learning that needs further elucidation in order to meet government standards in science education. In this study, concept mapping was used to explore the relationship between scientific language use and sensemaking defined as the interaction between the scientific concept system and everyday concepts in order to make sense of a proposed phenomenon. Eighty-eight concept maps from five different school classes and two school systems were analyzed in terms of their language use and concept formation from a Vygotskian perspective. This work proposes an intimate relationship between student language use, concept system formation and sensemaking in science, indicating possible implications for the study of learning as well as formative assessment using concept maps.

Students' deep understanding of problem-solving can stimulate the presence of original solutions. This statement led this present study to explore the growth of students' mathematical understanding in producing original solutions through problem-solving. Fifty-five students, from two different junior high schools, are solving a two-dimensional figures problem. Students who produce original solutions are interviewed to investigate their growth in mathematical understanding when generating their solutions. The original solution indicates that the answer fulfills the three aspects: different, unique, and correct. The study observes students' activities, both 'acting' and 'expressing', which refers to layers of understanding of Pirie and Kieren's Model. 'Acting' and 'expressing' were observed to investigate the movement of students' understanding in solving-problem. Students whose understanding grows to the layers of 'image making' and 'image having' will come up with original ideas. The ideas become more complex as students' understanding grows to the 'property noticing' layer. Besides, the original ideas combined with conceptual and procedural knowledge can formally support the presence of an original solution. Students produce original solutions when their understanding has reached the layers of 'formalizing' and 'observing'.

This study uses framing theory and the concept of causal stories to examine beliefs about causes and solutions to improving chronically low-performing schools in response to Michigan's school turnaround policy. Across cases, policymakers and district leaders assigned most responsibility to poor leadership, poverty, and chronic educator turnover as primary causes of problems leading to turnaround identification. These causal stories were most often framed as side effects of policy or practice rather than as intentional actions. However, a notable subset assigned blame more directly to intentional policy action (or inaction) that would help districts counteract the effects of concentrated poverty, such as weighted funding. In terms of solutions, most leaders believed that improved funding was necessary to strengthen and stabilize the workforce and meet the nonacademic needs of children--for instance, attending to the deleterious effects of poverty through wraparound services or efforts to address trauma.

Infographics can improve understanding and enhance critical thinking skills in readers. However, while research has been done on the importance of infographics, a gap exists regarding how creating infographics enhances student engagement and knowledge retention in higher education. Therefore, this study used a mixed-methods approach to analyze undergraduate responses after creating an infographic. Of the 189 students, 71% agreed that creating an infographic helped them retain, examine, and analyze information more thoroughly, and 62% intended to use the infographic process again. These results suggest that it is advantageous to educate students on how to create infographics to learn and convey information.

This study analyzed the contribution of spontaneous note-taking when undergraduates studied expository texts and videos. The study examined whether spontaneous note-taking had any effect on comprehension and if it was different for digital texts, presentation videos, or videos with decorative, irrelevant images. In addition, it explored whether the effects of note-taking on comprehension varied as a function of students working memory capacity. One hundred and twenty college students read expository texts or watched videos with different cognitive loads, answered comprehension questions, and reported solution strategies in an experimental elearning environment. Taking notes significantly improved their performance, and this note-taking efficacy did not vary as a function of presentation format, type of video, or working memory capacity. Overall, in an elearning setting, note-taking for digital text and video online expository comprehension was adopted spontaneously by around 40% of college students, and is equally effective for all formats of instruction. This is relevant for theories of multimedia comprehension, as well as for applied educational settings.

The informed consent process is integral to medical procedures, including skin biopsies, which are the definitive method for diagnosing challenging skin lesions. Educational videos are recognized for effective delivery of information for informed consent. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of an informed consent process using educational videos to improve patient understanding and reduce preprocedural anxiety. This multicenter, randomized controlled study was conducted during December 2021-June 2023. Participants were randomly assigned to either the video or verbal group in a 1:1 ratio. They completed knowledge and anxiety questionnaires before and after biopsy. The final analysis included 54 participants (verbal group: n=28; video group: n=26) with a mean age of 51.9 years (standard deviation [SD] 18.1), and a balanced gender distribution. Post-intervention knowledge scores (median 10.0; IQR 8.0-10.0) significantly increased compared to pre-intervention scores (median 6.0; IQR 4.0-9.0), p<0.001. Post-intervention Spielberger state-trait anxiety inventory (STAI) scores (median 5.0; interquartile range, IQR 5.0-6.0) significantly decreased compared to pre-intervention scores (median 7.0; IQR 5.0-10.0), p<0.001. Knowledge scores increased more in the video group (median, 2.5; IQR 1.0-5.0) than in the verbal group (median, 1.5; IQR 0.0-4.0), p=0.217. There was no significant difference in STAI score changes between the video group (median 1.0, IQR 0.0-4.0) and the verbal group (median 1.0, IQR 0.0-3.0), p=0.824. Despite statistical insignificance, educational videos exhibited greater effectiveness in enhancing comprehension and demonstrated comparable efficacy in reducing anxiety compared to conventional intervention.

Children with intellectual disabilities (CID) are born with incomplete development of intellectual capabilities. This deficit in intellectual competency is said to affect, to some extent, their language development. The present study aimed to investigate CID's communicative development, namely plot understanding, from their produced narratives. Participants were 29 9- to 15-year-old Thai CID from Chiang Rai Punyanukul School. The story-retelling technique (Reese et al., 2012) together with the picture book Frog, Where Are You? (Mayer, 1967) were used for data collection. Building from Freytag (1894), Berman & Slobin (1994), and Rungrojsuwan (2019a), a modified version of narrative macrostructure including onset, problem, problem-solving, and resolution was used as the analytical framework. Results showed that CID of younger ages, 9 to 11 years old, tended to have a wide range of plot understanding. Some could effectively communicate through narratives as early as 9, while others started their journey as late as 11 or 13. However, 15 years of age seems to be a significant period when CID who were once at different developmental paces, converged. In other words, their developmental gaps reduced and most of them could narrate effectively. Compared with normally developing children, CID are later at the beginning stages, but could finally reach the expected goal of narrative communication.

ChatGPT was first released in November 2022, which has led to varying reactions among educators. Educators are one of the major stakeholders in the education system. As a result of this, educators' perceptions of ChatGPT are worth investigating to inform future policy decision-making. This study examined the perceptions of ChatGPT among educators using an online survey. Thematic coding was conducted to interpret perceptions about their concerns about ChatGPT and their thoughts on the potential benefits of ChatGPT in education. The results indicated that even though educators did not know much about ChatGPT yet, they were open to receiving training about its applicability within education. Educators mentioned plagiarism/cheating, loss of higher-order thinking skills, overreliance on technology, lack of authenticity, decreasing content comprehension, fears of the unknown, and concern for social-emotional well-being as their concerns. On the other hand, educators were hopeful about developing teaching materials to reduce workload, instant information access, and a higher level of teaching using ChatGPT. The findings of the study suggest some important implications and recommendations for educators and policymakers.

No matter if they are in high school or college, Turkish students have particular challenges when trying to understand chemistry lectures delivered in English. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the difficulties Turkish students have when studying chemistry in English. A survey was administered to Turkish students at a Turkish University, nutrition and dietetics major in order to obtain relevant information. The results showed that 24.6% of students have difficulties learning chemistry in English, and 52.3% of the students are reluctant to give presentations in the chemistry class due to their lack of confidence in the English language. The results showed that the areas of weakness in the English language were conversational skills (78.5%), grammar (75.4%), vocabulary (75.4%), listening (72.2%), and reading (38.5%). Therefore, a considerable percentage of these students (48.6%) take their lecture notes in Turkish, and an overwhelming majority of them (46.2%) think that adding English terminology to textbooks alongside Turkish would help the problem. According to the research, it is possible to increase students' English skills and therefore their understanding of chemistry by employing various teaching strategies. To address communication hurdles in chemistry classes, the study heavily draws on both the Communicative and Natural Approaches.

Students often face difficulties to understand Archimedes' principle and to apply it in everyday life. It is therefore necessary to explore a different teaching approach that addresses students' visual and auditory senses in a unique manner. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of using multiple representations on undergraduate physics students' understanding of Archimedes' principle. A quasi-experimental approach was employed, involving the random selection of four groups of students (experimental and control) with two iterations, each involving two groups of students. A sample of 128 students completed an open-ended questionnaire based on the Thermal Transport Conceptual Inventory, and the Fluid Mechanics Concept Inventory. Lesson plans were presented for both iterations. Quantitative analysis involved the use of t-tests to assess the comparability of the groups, prior to the intervention and ANCOVA after the intervention to determine the effect. Qualitative data analysis involved identifying and comparing themes to establish student understanding before and after the two iterations. The findings indicated that the use of six different representations did not yield a significant effect compared to traditional teaching, while the use of eight representations proved significantly effective where the static pictures were replaced by animation pictures as well as adding videos and virtual labs. Careful planning is crucial not only for selecting the most suitable representation in a particular teaching situation, but also for determining which technology to use when addressing students' understanding of Archimedes' principle.
