In an effort to determine accurate orbital and physical properties of a large number of bright stars, a method was developed to fit simultaneously stellar parameters (masses, luminosities, effective temperatures), distance, and orbits to the available data on multiple systems, namely the combined and differential photometry, positional measurements, radial velocities (RVs), accelerations, etc. The method is applied to a peculiar resolved triple system HIP 86286. The masses of its components estimated using observations and standard relations are 1.3, 0.9, and 0.9 |$M_\odot$|⁠ ; the main star is a G8IV subgiant, while its two companions are main-sequence dwarfs. The inner and outer orbital periods are 35 and 287 yr, respectively, and the orbits are nearly coplanar. The second system, HIP 117258, is an accelerating star with a resolved companion; its 35.7-yr orbit based on relative astrometry and precise RVs yields the secondary mass of 0.95 |$M_\odot$|⁠ , much larger than inferred from the photometry. Accurate astrometric and photometric measurements from Gaia have led to the construction of 3D dust extinction maps which can now be used for estimating the integrated extinctions of Galactic sources located within 5 kpc. These maps based on optical observations may not be reliable for use in the ultraviolet (UV) which is more sensitive to reddening. Past studies have focussed on studying UV extinction using main-sequence stars but lack comparison with 3D dust maps. White dwarfs with well-modelled hydrogen-dominated (DA) atmospheres provide an advantage over main-sequence stars affected by magnetic activity. In this work, we study the variation of UV extinction with 3D dust maps utilizing Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) observations of DA white dwarfs located within 300 pc. We used HST COS spectroscopic data of 76 sightlines to calculate the optical extinction from Si  ii column densities and validate our results with the kinematic model predictions of the local interstellar medium. Also, we combined GALEX and Gaia photometric observations of 1158 DA white dwarfs to study UV reddening by comparing observed and modelled colour–colour relations. We calculated GALEX non-linearity corrections and derived reddening coefficients [ |$R(NUV-G)=6.52\pm 1.53$| and |$R(FUV-G)=6.04\pm 2.41$| ] considering their variations with optical extinction (⁠|$\rm{A_{V}}\lt 0.1$|  mag), and found them to be in good agreement with known extinction laws. HST analysis suggests a positive bias of 0.01–0.02 mag in the optical extinction from 3D maps depending on the Galactic latitude. As exoplanet surveys reach ever-higher sensitivities and durations, planets analogous to the Solar system giant planets are increasingly within reach. HD 28185 is a Sun-like star known to host a |$m\sin i=6~M_\mathrm{ J}$| planet on an Earth-like orbit; more recently, a brown dwarf with a more distant orbit has been claimed. In this work, we present a comprehensive re-analysis of the HD 28185 system, based on 22 yr of radial velocity (RV) observations and precision Hipparcos–Gaia astrometry. We confirm the previous characterization of HD 28185 b as a temperate giant planet, with its |$385.92^{+0.06}_{-0.07}$| d orbital period giving it an Earth-like incident flux. In contrast, we substantially revise the parameters of HD 28185 c; with a new mass of |$m=6.0\pm 0.6~M_\mathrm{ J}$|⁠ , we reclassify this companion as a super-Jovian planet. HD 28185 c has an orbital period of |$24.9^{+1.3}_{-1.1}$| yr, a semimajor axis of |$8.50^{+0.29}_{-0.26}$| au, and a modest eccentricity of |$0.15\pm 0.04$|⁠ , resulting in one of the most Saturn-like orbits of any known exoplanet. HD 28185 c lies at the current intersection of detection limits for RVs and direct imaging, and highlights how the discovery of giant planets at |$\approx$| 10 au separations is becoming increasingly routine. The Early Data Release (EDR) of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) comprises spectroscopy obtained from 2020 December 14 to 2021 June 10. White dwarfs were targeted by DESI both as calibration sources and as science targets and were selected based on Gaia photometry and astrometry. Here, we present the DESI EDR white dwarf catalogue, which includes 2706 spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs of which approximately 60 per cent have been spectroscopically observed for the first time, as well as 66 white dwarf binary systems. We provide spectral classifications for all white dwarfs, and discuss their distribution within the Gaia Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. We provide atmospheric parameters derived from spectroscopic and photometric fits for white dwarfs with pure hydrogen or helium photospheres, a mixture of those two, and white dwarfs displaying carbon features in their spectra. We also discuss the less abundant systems in the sample, such as those with magnetic fields, and cataclysmic variables. The DESI EDR white dwarf sample is significantly less biased than the sample observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which is skewed to bluer and therefore hotter white dwarfs, making DESI more complete and suitable for performing statistical studies of white dwarfs. We present a statistical, photometric, and spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis to characterize the blue straggler stars (BSSs) populations in the Galactic old open cluster Berkeley 39. Berkeley 39 is a 6.16 Gyr old open cluster located at a distance of 3.99 Kpc. Gaia DR3 astrometry data have been used to estimate the membership probabilities using ensemble-based unsupervised machine learning techniques. We identified 21 BSS candidates on the colour–magnitude diagram, with 19 of them being detected in the Swift /UVOT UVW2 filter. We analysed the radial surface density profile and examined the cluster dynamical states and mass segregation effect. The SEDs of 19 BSSs are constructed using multiwavelength data covering UV to IR wavelengths. A single-component SED is fitted successfully for 14 BSS candidates. We discovered hot companions in five BSS candidates. These hot companions have temperatures of approximately 14 000 to 23 000 K, radii ranging from 0.04 to 0.13 R |$_{\odot }$|⁠ , and luminosities ranging from 0.16 to 2.91 L |$_{\odot }$|⁠. Among these, three are most likely extremely low-mass white dwarfs (WDs) with masses around 0.17 to 0.18 M |$_{\odot }$|⁠ , and two are low-mass WDs with masses around 0.18 to 0.39 M |$_{\odot }$|⁠. This confirms that they are post-mass transfer (Case A or Case B) systems. We also investigated the variable characteristics of BSSs by analysing their light curves using data from TESS. Our analysis confirms that two BSSs identified as eclipsing binaries in Gaia DR3 are indeed eclipsing binaries. • A comparative assessment of the "surveying" vs. "tracking" strategy is discussed, to reach a better inventory of the orbiting population at a certain epoch. • Objective criteria are outlined for a best trade-off between telescope field of viev (FOV), CCD/CMOS platescale, telescope aperture and exposure time in order to maximize target(s) detection and astrometry. • Counter-intuitive aspects are discussed, compared with a more classical "astronomical" approach, delving the inherent link between time-tag accuracy and resolving power of optical imagery to track LEO objects. The main technical and strategic aspects related to Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) with optical sensors are set in context in this study to lead to an efficient inventory of the active satellites and un-cooperant space debris population at Low-Earth orbital regimes (LEO). In particular, special emphasis is devoted to the combined interplay between timing of observations, target illumination conditions, instrumental fine tuning and data acquisition mode (surveying vs. active tracking). At LEO altitudes, satellites are seen to cross the sky at very high angular velocity, in excess to 0.5–1.5 deg/sec, always making their positional measurements (and the inferred dynamical properties) a challenging task for ground telescopes. To this aim, objective criteria have to be identified for a best trade-off between instrument field of viev (FOV), CCD/CMOS platescale, telescope aperture and exposure time in order to maximize target(s) detection and reference grid of stars valuable for astrometry. Giant planets on long-period orbits around the nearest stars are among the easiest to directly image. Unfortunately these planets are difficult to fully constrain by indirect methods, e.g. transit and radial velocity (RV). In this study, we present the discovery of a super-Jupiter, HD 222237 b, orbiting a star located |$11.445\pm 0.002$|  pc away. By combining RV data, Hipparcos , and multi-epoch Gaia astrometry, we estimate the planetary mass to be |${5.19}_{-0.58}^{+0.58}\, M_{\rm Jup}$|⁠ , with an eccentricity of |${0.56}_{-0.03}^{+0.03}$| and a period of |${40.8}_{-4.5}^{+5.8}$|  yr, making HD 222237 b a promising target for imaging using the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) of JWST. A comparative analysis suggests that our method can break the inclination degeneracy and thus differentiate between prograde and retrograde orbits of a companion. We further find that the inferred contrast ratio between the planet and the host star in the F 1550 C filter (⁠|$15.50\, \mu \rm m$|⁠) is approximately |$1.9\times 10^{-4}$|⁠ , which is comparable with the measured limit of the MIRI coronagraphs. The relatively low metallicity of the host star (⁠|$\rm -0.32\, dex$|⁠) combined with the unique orbital architecture of this system presents an excellent opportunity to probe the planet–metallicity correlation and the formation scenarios of giant planets. Transiting planets in multiple-star systems, especially high-order multiples, make up a small fraction of the known planet population but provide unique opportunities to study the environments in which planets would have formed. Planet-hosting binaries have been shown to have an abundance of systems in which the stellar orbit aligns with the orbit of the transiting planet, which could give insights into the planet formation process in such systems. We investigate here if this trend of alignment extends to planet-hosting triple-star systems. We present long-term astrometric monitoring of a novel sample of triple-star systems that host Kepler transiting planets. We measured orbit arcs in 21 systems, including 12 newly identified triples, from a homogeneous analysis of our Keck adaptive optics data and, for some systems, Gaia astrometry. We examine the orbital alignment within the nine most compact systems (⁠|$\lesssim 500$|  au), testing if either (or both) of the stellar orbits align with the edge-on orbits of their transiting planets. Our statistical sample of triple systems shows a tendency toward alignment, especially when assessing the alignment probability using stellar orbital inclinations computed from full orbital fits, but is formally consistent with isotropic orbits. Two-population tests where half of the stellar orbits are described by a planet-hosting-binary-like moderately aligned distribution give the best match when the other half (non-planet-hosting) has a Kozai-like misaligned distribution. Overall, our results suggest that our sample of triple-star planet-hosting systems are not fully coplanar systems and have at most one plane of alignment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the joint astrometric and direct imaging discovery, mass measurement, and orbital analysis of HD 63754 B (HIP 38216 B), a companion near the stellar-substellar boundary orbiting |$\sim$| 20 au from its Sun-like host. HD 63754 was observed in our ongoing high-contrast imaging survey targeting stars with significant proper-motion accelerations between Hipparcos and Gaia consistent with wide-separation substellar companions. We utilized archival High Resolution Echelle Spectrograph and High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher radial velocity (RV) data, together with the host star's astrometric acceleration extracted from the Hipparcos – Gaia Catalog of Accelerations, to predict the location of the candidate companion around HD 63754 A. We subsequently imaged HD 63754 B at its predicted location using the Near Infrared Camera 2 (NIRC2) in the |$L^{\prime }$| band at the W. M. Keck Observatory. We then jointly modelled the orbit of HD 63754 B with RVs, Hipparcos – Gaia accelerations, and our new relative astrometry, measuring a dynamical mass of |${81.9}_{-5.8}^{+6.4} {M_{\rm Jup}}$|⁠ , an eccentricity of |${0.260}_{-0.059}^{+0.065}$|⁠ , and a nearly face-on inclination of |$174.\!\!^\circ 81_{-0.50}^{+0.48}$|⁠. For HD 63754 B, we obtain an |$L^{\prime }$| -band absolute magnitude of |$L^{\prime } = 11.39\pm 0.06$| mag, from which we infer a bolometric luminosity of |$\rm{log(L_{\rm bol}/{\rm{L}_{\odot}})= -4.55 \pm 0.08}$| dex using a comparison sample of L and T dwarfs with measured luminosities. Although uncertainties linger in age and dynamical mass estimates, our analysis points towards HD 63754 B's identity as a brown dwarf on the L/T transition rather than a low-mass star, indicated by its inferred bolometric luminosity and model-estimated effective temperature. Future RV, spectroscopic, and astrometric data such as those from JWST and Gaia Data Release 4 will clarify HD 63754 B's mass, and enable spectral typing and atmospheric characterization. We present a hierarchical Bayesian pipeline, BP3M, that measures positions, parallaxes, and proper motions (PMs) for cross-matched sources between Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images and Gaia—even for sparse fields (N * < 10 per image)—expanding from the recent GaiaHub tool. This technique uses Gaia-measured astrometry as priors to predict the locations of sources in HST images, and is therefore able to put the HST images onto a global reference frame without the use of background galaxies/QSOs. Testing our publicly available code in the Fornax and Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxies, we measure PMs that are a median of 8–13 times more precise than Gaia DR3 alone for 20.5 < G < 21 mag. We are able to explore the effect of observation strategies on BP3M astrometry using synthetic data, finding an optimal strategy to improve parallax and position precision at no cost to the PM uncertainty. Using 1619 HST images in the sparse COSMOS field (median nine Gaia sources per HST image), we measure BP3M PMs for 2640 unique sources in the 16 < G < 21.5 mag range, 25% of which have no Gaia PMs; the median BP3M PM uncertainty for 20.25 < G < 20.75 mag sources is 0.44 mas yr−1 compared to 1.03 mas yr−1 from Gaia, while the median BP3M PM uncertainty for sources without Gaia-measured PMs (20.75 < G < 21.5 mag) is 1.16 mas yr−1. The statistics that underpin the BP3M pipeline are a generalized way of combining position measurements from different images, epochs, and telescopes, which allows information to be shared between surveys and archives to achieve higher astrometric precision than that from each catalog alone. Binary star systems are expected to follow Newtonian dynamics similarly to planetary systems. However, reports have been made of wide binary systems with separations around 0.01 pc and larger, showing potential deviations from standard Newtonian motion. This phenomenon, suggestive of the flattening of galactic rotation curves, calls for closer inspection. This study presents an analysis of wide binary stars using data from Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3), a space-based astrometry mission funded by the European Space Agency. The study compares different choices of selection criteria to examine the nature of these apparent anomalous kinematics within the solar neighbourhood. The Gaia data set furnishes detailed parameters, including radial velocity, mass, age, and binary probability in addition to standard parameters. A custom Python tool named bynary facilitated both data processing and analysis. This report reveals that the signs of any anomalous signals systematically diminish as the initial selection criteria are relaxed for degrouping while subsequent filtering remains stringent, leading to the complete elimination of any apparent non-Newtonian motion for binary separations within 0.5 pc. The study shows that any observed anomalous behaviour in solar neighbourhood wide binaries within 130 pc must be produced either by faint companion stars orbiting primary or secondary stars, or by flyby stars. The findings emphasize the importance of the choice of selection criteria in disentangling genuine binary dynamics from external influences. We discovered 83 asteroids at the Baldone Astrophysical Observatory (MPC code 069) in 2017–2022. We studied one of the dynamically interesting Apollo (Near Earth object) observed at the Baldone Astronomical Observatory, namely 428694 Saule (2008 OS9) and the Centaur-type asteroid 330836 Orius (2009 HW77). We studied the evolution of the asteroid Saule’s rotation period, obliquity, and spin axis together with its non-gravitational parameter da∕dt{\rm{d}}a/{\rm{d}}t connected with the Yarkovsky effect. Additionally, we studied the orbit of the Amor-type asteroid 2017 UW42, which has the significant non-gravitational parameter A2A2.

In recent years, the study of the Milky Way has significantly advanced due to extensive spectroscopic surveys of its stars, complemented by astroseismic and astrometric data. However, it remains disjoint from recent advancements in understanding the physics of the Galactic interstellar medium (ISM). This paper introduces a new model for the chemical evolution of the Milky Way that can be constrained on stellar data, because it combines a state-of-the-art ISM model with a Milky Way stellar disc model. Utilizing a data set of red clump stars from APOGEE, known for their precise ages and metallicities, we concentrate on the last 6 billion years – a period marked by Milky Way's secular evolution. We examine the oxygen abundance in the low- |$\alpha$| disc stars relative to their ages and birth radii, validating or constraining critical ISM parameters that remain largely unexplored in extragalactic observations. The models that successfully reproduce the radius–metallicity distribution and the age–metallicity distribution of stars without violating existing ISM observations indicate a need for modest differential oxygen enrichment in Galactic outflows, meaning that the oxygen abundance of outflows is higher than the local ISM abundance, irrespective of outflow mass loading. The models also suggest somewhat elevated ISM gas velocity dispersion levels over the past 6 billion years compared to galaxies of similar mass. The extra turbulence necessary could result from energy from gas accretion onto the Galaxy, supernovae clustering in the ISM, or increased star formation efficiency per freefall time. We propose and discuss a new experimental approach to measure the centroid shift induced by gravitational microlensing in the images of lensed quasars (astrometric microlensing). Our strategy is based on taking the photocenter of a region in the quasar large enough as to be insensitive to microlensing as reference to measure the centroid displacement of the continuum. In this way, single-epoch measurements of astrometric microlensing can be performed. Using numerical simulations, we show that, indeed, the centroid shift monotonically decreases as the size of the emitting region increases, and only for relatively large regions, like the broad line region (BLR), does the centroid shift become negligible. This opens interesting possibilities to study the stratification of the different emitters in the accretion disk and the BLR. We estimate the amplitude of the centroid shifts for 79 gravitationally lensed images and study more thoroughly the special cases Q2237+030 A, RXJ1131-1231 A, PG1115+080 A2, and SDSS J1004+4112 A. We propose to use spectro-astrometry to simultaneously obtain the photocenters of the continuum and of different emission line regions since, with the precision of forthcoming instruments, astrometric microlensing by ∼1 M ⊙ mass microlenses may be detected in many quasar lensed images. When we consider more massive micro/millilenses, M ≳ 10 M ⊙, often proposed as the constituents of dark matter, the BLR becomes sensitive to microlensing and can no longer be used as a positional reference to measure centroid shifts. We searched for OB-runaway stars inside supernova remnants (SNRs) as a pre-supernova binary companion. As the majority of massive stars are found in close binary systems, a runaway star ejected by the orbital energy after the supernova (SN) is expected to be found. Considering a binary mass fraction, q = 0.25−1.0, the runaway star is likely to have an OB spectral type. We selected 12 SNRs at Galactic longitudes 109°−189°. Using Gaia astrometry, we selected stars having consistent distances with those of the SNRs and showing a peculiar proper motion directed away from the central region of the SNRs. We also determined the radial distribution of the extinction towards the SNRs and estimated the spectral types of the OB-runaway candidates through Gaia and Two Micron All Sky Survey photometry. We found two candidates among 12 SNRs. By spectroscopic observations, Gaia DR3 195632152560621440 inside SNR G166.0 + 4.3 was found to be an evolved A3 type star that cannot be the pre-SN binary companion to the progenitor. Gaia DR3 513927750767375872 inside SNR HB 3 is the only OB-runaway candidate (2D space velocity of 33.3 ± 3.3 km s−1). Based on photometric study, the star can be an early B-type main-sequence star with a slightly higher extinction relative to the SNR; however, it might instead be an evolved A-type star at the same distance. The other 11 SNRs do not host an OB-runaway star within their central regions. The computing capacity needed to process the data generated in modern scientific experiments is approaching ExaFLOPs. Currently, achieving such performances is only feasible through GPU-accelerated supercomputers. Different languages were developed to program GPUs at different levels of abstraction. Typically, the more abstract the languages, the more portable they are across different GPUs. However, the less abstract and co-designed with the hardware, the more room for code optimization and, eventually, the more performance. In the HPC context, portability and performance are a fairly traditional dichotomy. The current C++ Parallel Standard Template Library (PSTL) has the potential to go beyond this dichotomy. In this work, we analyze the main performance benefits and limitations of PSTL using as a use-case the Gaia Astrometric Verification Unit-Global Sphere Reconstruction parallel solver developed by the European Space Agency Gaia mission. The code aims to find the astrometric parameters of ∼ 10 8 stars in the Milky Way by iteratively solving a linear system of equations with the LSQR algorithm, originally GPU-ported with the CUDA language. We show that the performance obtained with the PSTL version, which is intrinsically more portable than CUDA, is comparable to the CUDA one on NVIDIA GPU architecture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The orbit solution of near-Earth asteroids heavily relies on ground-based optical observations. The orbit uncertainty is limited by the insufficient observation quantity and quality. The Chinese Tianwen-2 mission targets a near-Earth asteroid (469219) Kamo'oalewa and a main-belt comet, 311P/PANSTARRS. To accurately determine the orbit of Kamo'oalewa, more optical observations are needed. Autonomous observation experiments focusing on Kamo'oalewa were carried out using the 2.16-m telescope at the Xinglong Observatory of the National Astronomical Observatory of China. We found that this telescope could observe near-Earth asteroids as faint as a magnitude of 22.8. Based on the stacking method and trailed star extraction algorithm, 14 optical observations were obtained from 2022 to 2024. The orbit for Kamo'oalewa was determined by combining our observations with historical observations between 2004 and 2024. The inclusion of our observations results in improved orbital uncertainties of Kamo'oalewa by 18.67, 7.93, and 11.12 km (1σ) in the X, Y , and Z directions, respectively. Furthermore, by combining all existing and simulated observations, the uncertainty of the orbital determination of Kamo'oalewa was analysed. When using an additional 180 group observations from 3 Chinese observatories over 2 yr, the orbital uncertainties of Kamo'oalewa in the 3 directions could be reduced to 30 km (1σ). We present James Webb Space Telescope observations of the globular cluster NGC 6397 and use them to extend to infrared wavelengths the characterization of the cluster's entire white dwarf (WD) cooling sequence (CS). The data allows us to probe fundamental astrophysical WD properties and to search for evidence in their colors for (or against) the existence of ancient planetary systems. The existing archival Hubble Space Telescope imaging data obtained ∼18$$ \sim 18 $$ years ago reach ultra‐deep optical magnitudes (V∼31$$ V\sim 31 $$) and allow us to derive a near‐perfect separation between field and cluster members. We detect an apparent split in the lower part of the WD CS of NGC 6397. The red part of the WD CS, containing about 25% of the total, exhibits significant IR‐excess of up to ΔmF322W2∼0.5$$ \Delta {m}_{\mathrm{F}322\mathrm{W}2}\sim 0.5 $$ mag. Isolated black holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs) are largely undetectable across the electromagnetic spectrum. For this reason, our only real prospect of observing these isolated compact remnants is via microlensing; a feat recently performed for the first time. However, characterization of the microlensing events caused by BHs and NSs is still in its infancy. In this work, we perform N -body simulations to explore the frequency and physical characteristics of microlensing events across the entire sky. Our simulations find that every year we can expect |$88_{-6}^{+6}$| BH, |$6.8_{-1.6}^{+1.7}$| NS, and |$20^{+30}_{-20}$| stellar microlensing events which cause an astrometric shift larger than 2 mas. Similarly, we can expect |$21_{-3}^{+3}$| BH, |$18_{-3}^{+3}$| NS, and |$7500_{-500}^{+500}$| stellar microlensing events which cause a bump magnitude larger than 1 mag. Leveraging a more comprehensive dynamical model than prior work, we predict the fraction of microlensing events caused by BHs as a function of Einstein time to be smaller than previously thought. Comparison of our microlensing simulations to events in Gaia finds good agreement. Finally, we predict that in the combination of Gaia and Gaia NIR data there will be |$14700_{-900}^{+600}$| BH and |$1600_{-200}^{+300}$| NS events creating a centroid shift larger than 1 mas and |$330_{-120}^{+100}$| BH and |$310_{-100}^{+110}$| NS events causing bump magnitudes >1. Of these, <10 BH and |$5_{-5}^{+10}$| NS events should be detectable using current analysis techniques. These results inform future astrometric mission design, such as Gaia NIR, as they indicate that, compared to stellar events, there are fewer observable BH events than previously thought. The Fermi /GBM instrument is a vital source of detections of gamma-ray bursts and has an increasingly important role to play in understanding gravitational-wave transients. In both cases, its impact is increased by accurate positions with reliable uncertainties. We evaluate the RoboBA and BALROG algorithms for determining the position of gamma-ray bursts detected by the Fermi /GBM instrument. We construct a sample of 54 bursts with detections both by Swift /BAT and by Fermi /GBM. We then compare the positions predicted by RoboBA and BALROG with the positions measured by BAT, which we can assume to be the true position. We find that RoboBA and BALROG are similarly precise for bright bursts whose uncertainties are dominated by systematic errors, but RoboBA performs better for faint bursts whose uncertainties are dominated by statistical noise. We further find that the uncertainties in the positions predicted by RoboBA are consistent with the distribution of position errors, whereas BALROG seems to be underestimating the uncertainties by a factor of about 2. Additionally, we consider the implications of these results for the follow-up of the optical afterglows of Fermi /GBM bursts. Small-scale dark matter structures lighter than a billion solar masses are an important probe of primordial density fluctuations and dark matter microphysics. Due to their lack of starlight emission, their only guaranteed signatures are gravitational in nature. We report on results of a search for astrometric weak lensing by compact dark matter subhaloes in the Milky Way with Gaia DR3 data. Using a matched-filter analysis to look for correlated imprints of time-domain lensing on the proper motions of background stars in the Magellanic Clouds, we exclude order-unity substructure fractions in haloes with masses Ml between 107 and |$10^9 \, {\rm M}_\odot$| and sizes of one parsec or smaller. We forecast that a similar approach based on proper accelerations across the entire sky with data from Gaia DR4 may be sensitive to substructure fractions of fl ≳ 10−3 in the much lower mass range of |$10 \, {\rm M}_\odot \lesssim M_l \lesssim 3 \times 10^3 \, {\rm M}_\odot$|⁠. We further propose an analogous technique for stacked star–star lensing events in the regime of large impact parameters. There is still a limited number of high-redshift (z > 3) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) whose jet kinematics have been studied with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). Without a dedicated proper motion survey, regularly conducted astrometric VLBI observations of bright radio-emitting AGN with sensitive arrays can be utilized to follow changes in the jets, by means of high-resolution imaging and brightness distribution modelling. Here, we present a first-time VLBI jet kinematic study of NVSS J080518 + 614423 (z = 3.033) and NVSS J165844 − 073918 (z = 3.742), two flat-spectrum radio quasars that display milliarcsecond-scale jet morphology. Archival astrometric observations carried out mainly with the Very Long Baseline Array, supplemented by recent data taken with the European VLBI Network, allowed us to monitor changes in their radio structure in the 7.6−8.6 GHz frequency band, covering almost two decades. By identifying individual jet components at each epoch, we were able to determine the apparent proper motion for multiple features in both sources. Apparent superluminal motions range |$(1-14)\, c$|⁠ , and are found to be consistent with studies of other high-redshift AGN targets. Using the physical parameters derived from the brightness distribution modelling, we estimate the Doppler-boosting factors (δ ≈ 11.2 and δ ≈ 2.7), the Lorentz factors (Γ ≈ 7.4 and Γ ≈ 36.6), and the jet viewing angles (θ ≈ 4.4° and θ ≈ 8.0°), for NVSS J080518 + 614423 and NVSS J165844 − 073918, respectively. ABSTRACT: With its near-to-mid-infrared high-contrast imaging capabilities, JWST is ushering us into a golden age of directly imaging Jupiter-like planets. As the two closest cold Jupiters, ε Ind A b and ε Eridani b have sufficiently wide orbits and adequate infrared emissions to be detected by JWST. To detect more Jupiter-like planets for direct imaging, we develop a gost-based method to analyse radial velocity data and multiple Gaia data releases simultaneously. Without approximating instantaneous astrometry by catalogue astrometry, this approach enables the use of multiple Gaia data releases for detection of both short-period and long-period planets. We determine a mass of $2.96_{-0.38}^{+0.41}$ MJup and a period of $42.92_{-4.09}^{+6.38}$ yr for ε Ind A b. We also find a mass of $0.76_{-0.11}^{+0.14}$ MJup , a period of $7.36_{-0.05}^{+0.04}$ yr, and an eccentricity of 0.26$_{-0.04}^{+0.04}$ MJup, for ε Eridani b. The eccentricity differs from that given by some previous solutions, probably due to the sensitivity of orbital eccentricity to noise modelling. Our work refines the constraints on orbits and masses of the two nearest Jupiters and demonstrate the feasibility of using multiple Gaia data releases to constrain Jupiter-like planets.

Enceladus possesses a subsurface ocean beneath a conductive ice shell. Based on shell thickness models, the estimated total conductive heat loss from Enceladus is 25-40 GW; the measured heat output from the South Polar Terrain (SPT) is 4-19 GW. The present-day SPT heat flux is of order 100 mWm-2, comparable to estimated paleo-heat fluxes for other regions of Enceladus. These regions have nominal ages of about 2 Ga, but the estimates are uncertain because the impactor flux in the Saturnian system may not resemble that elsewhere. Enceladuss measured rate of orbital expansion implies a low dissipation factor Qp for Saturn, with Qp≈3×103 (neglecting the role of Dione). This value implies that Enceladuss present-day equilibrium tidal heat production (roughly 50 GW, but with large uncertainties) is in approximate balance with its heat loss. If Qp is constant, Enceladus cannot be older than 1.5 Gyr (because otherwise it would have migrated more than is permissible). However, Saturns dissipation may be better described by the resonance-locking theory, in which case Enceladuss orbit may have only evolved outwards by about 35% over the age of the Solar System. In the constant-Qp scenario, any ancient tidal heating events would have been too energetic to be consistent with the observations. Because resonance-locking makes capture into earlier mean-motion orbital resonances less likely, the inferred ancient heating episodes probably took place when the current orbital resonance was already established. In the resonance-locking scenario, tidal heating did not change significantly over time, allowing for a long-lived ocean and a relatively stable ice shell. If so, Enceladus is an attractive target for future exploration from a habitability standpoint.

Introduction: In recent decades, numerous large survey projects have been initiated to enhance our understanding of the cosmos. Among these, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) stands out as a flagship project of the Stage IV cosmology imaging surveys, offering an open-source framework for data management and processing adaptable to various instruments. Methods: In this paper, we introduce the 'obs_mccd' software package, designed to serve as a bridge linking raw data from generic mosaic-CCD instruments to the LSST data management framework. The package also facilitates the deployment of tailored configurations to the pipeline middleware. To validate our data processing pipeline, we processed a batch of realistic data from a commissioning wide-field telescope. Results: We established a prototype of the quality control (QC) system capable of assessing image quality parameters such as PSF size, ellipticity, and astrometric calibration. Our findings indicate that using a fifth-order polynomial for astrometric calibration effectively characterizes geometric distortion, achieving a median average geometric distortion residual of 0.011 pixel. Discussion: When comparing the performance of our pipeline to our inhouse pipeline applied to the same dataset, we observed that our new 'obs_mccd' pipeline offers improved precision, reducing the median average geometric distortion residual from 0.016 pixel to 0.011 pixel. This enhancement in performance underscores the benefits of the obs_mccd package in managing and processing data from wide-field surveys, and it opens up new avenues for scientific exploration with smaller, flexible survey systems complementing the LSST. Thanks to Gaia DR2, we proved for the first time that a general relativistic Milky Way rotation curve is statistically indistinguishable from its state-of-the-art dark matter analogue. Those results supported the ansatz that gravitational dragging can explain the observed flatness of the Milky Way rotation curve with a consistent radial matter density profile. To challenge again such a scenario, we select 719 143 young disc stars within | z | < 1 kpc and up to R ≃ 19 kpc from Gaia DR3 providing a much larger sample of high-quality astrometric and spectrophotometric data of unprecedented homogeneity. This sample comprises 241 918 OBA stars, 475 520 RGB giants, and 1705 Cepheides that we use to fit, as with DR2, both a classical velocity profile model, i.e. with a dark matter halo, and a general relativistic analogue derived from a dust disc-scale metric. Once more, further corroborating our earlier findings, both models are found to explain, with similar statistical quality, the new observed rotational velocities derived from different combinations of the selected sets of stars belonging to the disc of our Galaxy. The geometrical effect is found to drive the velocity profile from 10 kpc outwards, while being responsible for ∼30–37 per cent of this profile already at the Sun distance, similarly to the halo contribution in the classical model. This confirms our previous results on the contribution of Einstein's geometry and pushes to further investigate the role of General Relativity in tracing the Milky Way rotation curve; notably, the origin of this gravitational dragging remains undetermined, necessitating a dedicated in-depth exploration. Stellar multiplicity is a key aspect of exoplanet diversity, as the presence of more than one star in a planetary system can have both devastating and positive effects on its formation and evolution. In this paper, we present the results of a Lucky Imaging survey of 212 exoplanet host stars performed with AstraLux at the 2.2 m telescope of the Centro Astronómico Hispano en Andalucía. The survey includes data from seven observing epochs between August 2015 and September 2020, and data for individual targets from four earlier observing epochs. The targets of this survey are nearby, bright, solar-like stars with high proper motions. In total, we detected 46 co-moving companions of 43 exoplanet host stars. Accordingly, this survey shows that the minimum multiplicity rate of exoplanet host stars is |$20 \pm 3~{\rm per\ cent}$|⁠. In total, 33 binary and 10 hierarchical triple star systems with exoplanets have been identified. All companions were found to have a common proper motion with the observed exoplanet host stars, and with our astrometry we even find evidence of orbital motion for 28 companions. For all targets, we determine the detection limit and explore the detection space for possible additional companions of these stars. Based on the reached detection limit, additional co-moving companions beyond the detected ones can be excluded around all observed exoplanet host stars. The increasing number of exoplanets discovered in multiple stellar systems suggests that the formation of planets in such systems is by no means rare, but common. The Magellanic Cloud system represents a unique laboratory for study of both interacting dwarf galaxies and the ongoing process of the formation of the Milky Way and its halo. We focus on one aspect of this complex, three-body interaction – the dynamical perturbation of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) by the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and specifically potential tidal effects on the SMC's eastern side. Using Gaia astrometry and the precise radial velocities (RVs) and multielement chemical abundances from Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2) Data Release 17, we explore the well-known distance bimodality on the eastern side of the SMC. Through estimated stellar distances, proper motions, and RVs, we characterize the kinematics of the two populations in the bimodality and compare their properties with those of SMC populations elsewhere. Moreover, while all regions explored by APOGEE seem to show a single chemical enrichment history, the metallicity distribution function (MDF), of the 'far' stars on the eastern periphery of the SMC is found to resemble that for the more metal-poor fields of the western periphery, whereas the MDF for the 'near' stars on the eastern periphery resembles that for stars in the SMC Centre. The closer eastern periphery stars also show RVs (corrected for SMC rotation and bulk motion) that are, on average, approaching us relative to all other SMC populations sampled. We interpret these trends as evidence that the near stars on the eastern side of the SMC represent material pulled out of the central SMC as part of its tidal interaction with the LMC. The Stingray sensor system is a 15-camera optical array dedicated to the nightly astrometric and photometric survey of the geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) belt visible above Tucson, Arizona. The primary scientific goal is to characterize GEO and near-GEO satellites based on their observable properties. This system is completely autonomous in both data acquisition and processing, with human oversight reserved for data quality assurance and system maintenance. The 15 ZWO ASI1600MM Pro cameras are mated to Sigma 135 mm f/1.8 lenses and are controlled simultaneously by four separate computers. Each camera is fixed in position and observes a 7.6-by-5.8-degree portion of the GEO belt, for a total of a 114-by-5.8-degree field of regard. The GAIA DR2 star catalog is used for image astrometric plate solution and photometric calibration to GAIA G magnitudes. There are approximately 200 near-GEO satellites on any given night that fall within the Stingray field of regard, and all those with a GAIA G magnitude brighter than approximately 15.5 are measured by the automated data reduction pipeline. Results from an initial one-month survey show an aggregate photometric uncertainty of 0.062 ± 0.008 magnitudes and astrometric accuracy consistent with theoretical sub-pixel centroid limits. We present a comprehensive analysis of the detailed chemical abundances for a sample of 11 metal-poor, very metal-poor, and extremely metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] = −1.65 to [Fe/H]  = −3.0) as part of the HESP-GOMPA (Galactic survey Of Metal Poor stArs) survey. The abundance determinations encompass a range of elements, including C, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, and Ba, with a subset of the brighter objects allowing for the measurement of additional key elements. Notably, the abundance analysis of a relatively bright highly r -process-enhanced (r -II) star (SDSS J0019+3141) exhibits a predominantly main r -process signature and variations in the lighter r -process elements. Moreover, successful measurements of thorium in this star facilitate stellar age determinations. We find a consistent odd–even nucleosynthesis pattern in these stars, aligning with expectations for their respective metallicity levels, thus implicating Type II supernovae as potential progenitors. From the interplay between the light and heavy r -process elements, we infer a diminishing relative production of light r -process elements with increasing Type II supernova contributions, challenging the notion that Type II supernovae are the primary source of these light r -process elements in the early Milky Way. A chemodynamical analysis based on Gaia astrometric data and our derived abundances indicates that all but one of our program stars are likely to be of accreted origin. Additionally, our examination of α-poor stars underscores the occurrence of an early accretion event from a satellite on a prograde orbit, similar to that of the Galactic disc. While intensively studied, it remains unclear how the star formation (SF) in infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) compares to that of nearby clouds. We study G351.77-0.53 (henceforth G351), a cluster-forming filamentary IRDC. We begin by characterizing its young stellar object (YSO) content. Based on the average parallax of likely members, we obtain a Gaia distance of |$\sim \, 2.0\pm 0.14$|  kpc, resolving the literature distance ambiguity. Using our Herschel-derived N(H2) map, we measure a total gas mass of 10 200 M⊙ (within 11 pc2) and the average line-mass profile of the entire filament, which we model as |$\lambda =~1660 (w/\rm pc)^{0.62}\, \, {\rm M}_{\odot }\, \rm {pc}^{-1}$|⁠. At w < 0.63 pc, our λ profile is higher and has a steeper power-law index than λ profiles extracted in Orion A and most of its substructures. Based on the YSOs inside the filament area, we estimate the SF efficiency (SFE) and SF rate (SFR). We calculate a factor of 5 incompleteness correction for our YSO catalogue relative to Spitzer surveys of Orion A. The G351 SFE is ∼1.8 times lower than that of Orion A and lower than the median value for local clouds. We measure SFR and gas masses to estimate the efficiency per free-fall time, ϵff. We find that ϵff is ∼1.1 dex below the previously proposed mean local relation, and |$\sim \, 4.7\times$| below Orion A. These observations indicate that local SF-relations do not capture variations present in the Galaxy. We speculate that cloud youth and/or magnetic fields might account for the G351 inefficiency. Thanks to the precise astrometric measurements of proper motions by the Gaia mission, a new tidal stellar stream has been discovered in the northern hemisphere. The distribution of star count shows that the stream is approximately 80° long and 1.°70 wide. Observations of 21 member stars, including 14 RR Lyrae stars, indicate that the stream has an eccentric and retrograde orbit with e = 0.58. The low metallicity, high total energy, and large angular momentum suggest that it is associated with the merging event Sequoia. CRL 618 is a post-Asymptotic Giant Branch star that has started to ionize its ejecta. Its central H  ii region has been observed over the last 40 yr and has steadily increased in flux density at radio wavelengths. In this paper, we present data that we obtained with the Very Large Array in its highest frequency band (43 GHz) in 2011 and compare these with archival data in the same frequency band from 1998. By applying the so-called expansion-parallax method, we are able to estimate an expansion rate of 4.0 ± 0.4 mas yr−1 along the major axis of the nebula and derive a distance of 1.1 ± 0.2 kpc. Within errors, this distance estimation is in good agreement with the value of ∼900 pc derived from the expansion of the optical lobes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the multiband properties of two ultraluminous X-ray sources (2CXO J225728.9−410211 = X-1 and 2CXO J225724.7−410343 = X-2) and their surroundings, in the spiral galaxy NGC 7424. Both sources have approached X-ray luminosities L X ∼ 1040 erg s−1 at some epochs. Thanks to a more accurate astrometric solution (based on Australia Telescope Compact Array and Gaia data), we identified the point-like optical counterpart of X-1, which looks like an isolated B8 supergiant (M ≈ 9 M ⊙, age ≈30 Myr). Instead, X-2 is in a star-forming region (size of about 100 pc × 150 pc), near young clusters and ionized gas. Very large telescope long-slit spectra show a spatially extended region of He  ii λ4686 emission around the X-ray position, displaced by about 50 pc from the brightest star cluster, which corresponds to the peak of lower ionization line emission. We interpret the He  ii λ4686 emission as a signature of X-ray photoionization from the ULX, while the other optical lines are consistent with UV ionization in an ordinary He ii region. The luminosity of this He++ nebula puts it in the same class as other classical photoionized ULX nebulae such as those around Holmberg II X-1 and NGC 5408 X-1. We locate a strong (5.5 GHz luminosity |$\nu \, L_{\nu } \approx 10^{35}$|  erg s−1), steep-spectrum, unresolved radio source at the peak of the low-ionization lines, and discuss alternative physical scenarios for the radio emission. Using Gaia Data Release 3 astrometry and spectroscopy, we study two new substructures in the orbit–metallicity space of the inner Milky Way: Shakti and Shiva. They were identified as two confined, high-contrast overdensities in the (L z , E) distribution of bright (G < 16) and metal-poor (−2.5 < [M/H] < − 1.0) stars. Both have stellar masses of M ⋆ ≳ 107 M ⊙, and are distributed on prograde orbits inside the solar circle in the Galaxy. Both structures have an orbit-space distribution that points toward an accreted origin; however, their abundance patterns—from APOGEE—are such that are conventionally attributed to an in situ population. These seemingly contradictory diagnostics could be reconciled if we interpret the abundances [Mg/Fe], [Al/Fe], [Mg/Mn] versus [Fe/H] distribution of their member stars merely as a sign of rapid enrichment. This would then suggest one of two scenarios. Either these prograde substructures were created by some form of resonant orbit trapping of the field stars by the rotating bar; a plausible scenario proposed by Dillamore et al. Or, Shakti and Shiva were protogalactic fragments that formed stars rapidly and coalesced early, akin to the constituents of the poor old heart of the Milky Way, just less deep in the Galactic potential and still discernible in orbit space. The gravitational redshift induced by stellar surface gravity is notoriously difficult to measure for non-degenerate stars, since its amplitude is small in comparison with the typical Doppler shift induced by stellar radial velocity. In this study, we make use of the large observational data set of the Gaia mission to achieve a significant reduction of noise caused by these random stellar motions. By measuring the differences in velocities between the components of the pairs of comoving stars and wide binaries, we are able to statistically measure the combined effects of gravitational redshift and convective blueshifting of spectral lines, and nullify the effect of the peculiar motions of the stars. For the subset of stars considered in this study, we find a positive correlation between the observed differences in Gaia radial velocities and the differences in surface gravity and convective blueshift inferred from effective temperature and luminosity measurements. The results rule out a null signal at the 5σ level for our full data set. Additionally, we study the subdominant effects of binary motion, and possible systematic errors in radial velocity measurements within Gaia. Results from the technique presented in this study are expected to improve significantly with data from the next Gaia data release. Such improvements could be used to constrain the mass-luminosity relation and stellar models that predict the magnitude of convective blueshift.

Introduction: The Multi-Channel Imager (MCI), one of the back-end modules of the future China Space Station Telescope (CSST), is designed for high-precision space-based astronomical observations. This paper evaluates the astrometric capability of the MCI based on simulated observational images and Gaia data: the M31 galaxy is selected as a representative case to validate the astrometric capability by calculating the proper motions (PMs) of the M31 member stars. Method: We analyze the stellar centroids of the simulated images in the R, I and G bands, positional uncertainty of 2.5 mas for brighter foreground reference stars from the Gaia DR3 catalog and of 7.5 mas for the fainter M31 member stars, are adopted respectively. The theoretical PMs are generated from the adopted velocity field model, rotation curve, and stellar surface density profile. And the simulated observed PMs are generated from the aforementioned position uncertainties and theoretical PMs. Result: We conclude that the precision of the MCI derived PMs strongly depends on the number of astrometric epochs per year. Specifically, uncertainty of 10 μas/yr is achievable with 10 epochs per year, and of 5 μas/yr with 50 epochs ignoring possible systematic effects. And symmetrically distributed observed fields yield better M31 kinematic parameters. Discussion: Unknown systematic errors, space environment effects on detectors, dithering strategies, and observation schedules can affect the PMs of M31, the above issues need further analysis and validation in future work. Extremely precise radial velocity is essential for the detection of sub-m s−1 radial velocity of stars induced by Earth-like planets. Although modelling of the barycentric correction of radial velocity could achieve 1 mm s−1 precision, the input astrometry could be biased due to non-linear motions of stars caused by companions. To account for astrometry induced bias in barycentric correction, we correct for astrometric bias by minimizing the scatter of reduced RV data with Precise EXOplanetology (PEXO). In particular, we apply this method to the barycentric correction for 266 stars from HARPS data archive. We find that the RV scatter for eight targets are significantly reduced due to correction of astrometric bias. Among these targets, two targets exhibit bias caused by known massive companions, while for the remaining six targets, the bias could be attributed to unknown companions or Gaia systematics. Furthermore, 14 targets have an astrometry induced annual RV variation higher than 0.05  m s−1, and 10 of them are closer than 10 pc. We show the results of Barnard's star as an example, and find that an annual RV bias of 10 cm s−1 is mitigated by replacing BarCor by PEXO as the barycentric correction code. Our work demonstrates the necessity of astrometric bias correction and the utilization of barycentric correction code within a relativistic framework in high-precision RV for the detection of Earth-like planets. Solar and lunar eclipses are indeed the first astronomical phenomena which have been recorded since very early antiquity. Their periodicities gave birth to the first luni-solar calendars based on the Methonic cycle since the sixth century before Christ. The Saros cycle of 18.03 years is due to the Chaldean astronomical observations. Their eclipses' observations reported by Ptolemy in the Almagest (Alexandria of Egypt, about 150 a.C.) enabled modern astronomers to recognize the irregular rotation rate of the Earth. The Earth's rotation is some hours in delay after the last three millenia if we use the present rotation to simulate the 721 b.C. total eclipse in Babylon. This is one of the most important issues in modern celestial mechanics, along with the Earth's axis nutation of 18 yr (discovered in 1737), precession of 25.7 Kyr (discovered by Ipparchus around 150 b.C.) and obliquity of 42 Kyr motions (discovered by Arabic astronomers and assessed from the Middle Ages to the modern era, IX to XVIII centuries). Newtonian and Einstenian gravitational theories explain fully these tiny motions, along with the Lense–Thirring gravitodynamic effect, which required great experimental accuracy. The most accurate lunar and solar theories, or their motion in analytical or numerical form, allow us to predict—along with the lunar limb profile recovered by a Japanese lunar orbiter—the appearance of total, annular solar eclipses or lunar occultations for a given place on Earth. The observation of these events, with precise timing, may permit us to verify the sphericity of the solar profile and its variability. The variation of the solar diameter on a global scale was claimed firstly by Angelo Secchi in the 1860s and more recently by Jack Eddy in 1978. In both cases, long and accurate observational campaigns started in Rome (1877–1937) and Greenwich Observatories, as well as at Yale University and the NASA and US Naval Observatory (1979–2011) with eclipses and balloon-borne heliometric observations. The IOTA/ES and US sections as well as the ICRA continued the eclipse campaigns. The global variations of the solar diameter over a decadal timescale, and at the millarcsecond level, may reflect some variation in solar energy output, which may explain some past climatic variations (such as the Allerød and Dryas periods in Pleistocene), involving the outer layers of the Sun. "An eclipse never comes alone"; in the eclipse season, lasting about one month, we can have also lunar eclipses. Including the penumbral lunar eclipses, the probability of occurrence is equi-distributed amongst lunar and solar eclipses, but while the lunar eclipses are visible for a whole hemisphere at once, the solar eclipses are not. The color of the umbral shadow on the Moon was known since antiquity, and Galileo (1632, Dialogo sopra i Massimi Sistemi del Mondo) shows clearly these phenomena from copper color to a totally dark, eclipsed full Moon. Three centuries later, André Danjon was able to correlate that umbral color with the 11-year cycle of solar activity. The forthcoming American total solar eclipse of 8 April 2024 will be probably the eclipse with the largest mediatic impact of the history; we wish that also the scientific impulse toward solar physics and astronomy will be relevant, and the measure of the solar diameter with Baily's beads is indeed one of the topics significantly related to the Sun–Earth connections. On 2023 December 12, the star α Orionis will be occulted by asteroid (319) Leona. This represents an extraordinary and unique opportunity to analyse the brightness distribution of Betelgeuse's photosphere with extreme angular resolution by studying light curves from different points on Earth and at different wavelengths. Here we present observations of another occultation by asteroid Leona, on 2023 September 13, whose goal was to determine Leona's projected shape and size in preparation for the December 12th event and its interpretation. The occultation campaign was highly successful with 25 positive detections from 17 different sites and a near miss. The effective diameter in projected area derived from the positive detections was 66 ± 2 km using an elliptical fit to the instantaneous limb. The body is highly elongated, with dimensions of 79.6 ± 2.2 km × 54.8 ± 1.3 km in its long and short axis, respectively, at occultation time. This result, in combination with dense time series photometry of Leona that we recently obtained, together with archival sparse photometry, allowed us to predict the angular size of the asteroid for the Betelgeuse event and to simulate the expected brightness change. The Low Earth Orbit (LEO) region is populated by tens of thousands of objects, which include not only active satellites, but also space debris which can pose a real danger to space operations, and therefore have to be monitored closely. The work presented in this paper addresses the problem of wide field LEO detection and astrometric reduction using a portable, low cost wide field system. The work will address the challenges of astrometric reduction errors for wide FOV images, which lead to the need for multiple calibrations, which pose a challenge for real time operation. We propose a mechanism for aggregating calibration data as the system runs in real time, which does not slow down the real time operation but continuously increases the accuracy of the results. The proposed mechanism can be adapted for both staring and sidereal tracking observation modes, and to all types of astrometry software or streak detection algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report near-infrared long-baseline interferometric observations of the Hyades multiple system HD 284163, made with the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy array, as well as almost 43 yr of high-resolution spectroscopic monitoring at the Center for Astrophysics. Both types of observations resolve the 2.39 d inner binary, and also an outer companion in a 43.1 yr orbit. Our observations, combined with others from the literature, allow us to solve for the 3D inner and outer orbits, which are found to be at nearly right angles to each other. We determine the dynamical masses of the three stars (good to better than 1.4 per cent for the inner pair), as well as the orbital parallax. The secondary component (0.5245 ± 0.0047 M⊙) is now the lowest mass star with a dynamical mass measurement in the cluster. A comparison of these measurements with current stellar evolution models for the age and metallicity of the Hyades shows good agreement. All three stars display significant levels of chromospheric activity, consistent with the classification of HD 284163 as an RS CVn object. We present a comprehensive overview of a volume-complete sample of white dwarfs located within 40 pc of the Sun, a significant proportion of which were detected in Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3). Our DR3 sample contains 1076 spectroscopically confirmed white dwarfs, with just five candidates within the volume remaining unconfirmed (> 99 per cent spectroscopic completeness). Additionally, 28 white dwarfs were not in our initial selection from Gaia DR3, most of which are in unresolved binaries. We use Gaia DR3 photometry and astrometry to determine a uniform set of white dwarf parameters, including mass, effective temperature, and cooling age. In general, the atypical high velocity of some stars in the Galaxy can only be explained by invoking acceleration mechanisms related to extreme astrophysical events in the Milky Way. Using astrometric data from Gaia and the photometric information in 12 filters of the S-PLUS, we performed a kinematic, dynamical, and chemical analysis of 64 stars with Galactocentric velocities higher than 400 |$\mathrm{km\, s}^{-1}$|⁠. All the stars are gravitationally bound to the Galaxy and exhibit halo kinematics. Some of the stars could be remnants of structures such as the Sequoia and the Gaia-Sausage/Enceladus. Supported by orbital and chemical analysis, we identified Gaia DR3 5401875170994688896 as a star likely to be originated at the centre of the Galaxy. Application of a machine learning technique to the S-PLUS photometric data allows us to obtain very good estimates of magnesium abundances for this sample of high-velocity stars. Identification of white dwarfs (WD) with main-sequence (MS) companions and characterization of their properties can put important constraints on our understanding of binary stellar evolution and guide the theoretical predictions for a wide range of interesting transient events relevant for, e.g. Rubin Observatory (LSST), ZTF, and LISA. In this study, we combine ultraviolet (UV) and optical colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to identify unresolved WD–MS binaries. In particular, we combine high-precision astrometric and photometric data in the optical from Gaia -DR3 and UV data from GALEX GR6/7 to identify 93 WD–MS candidates within 100 pc. Of these, 80 are newly identified. Using the Virtual Observatory SED Analyzer (VOSA), we fit the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of all our candidates and derive stellar parameters, such as effective temperature, bolometric luminosity, and radius for both companions. We find that our identification method helps identify hotter and smaller WD companions (majority with ≥10 000 K and ≤0.02 R⊙) relative to the WDs identified by past surveys. We infer that these WDs are relatively more massive (median ∼ |$0.76\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$|⁠). We find that most of the MS companions in our binaries are of the K and M spectral types. A detailed study of stellar populations in Milky Way (MW) satellite galaxies remains an observational challenge due to their faintness and fewer spectroscopically confirmed member stars. We use unsupervised machine learning methods to identify new members for nine nearby MW satellite galaxies using Gaia data release-3 (Gaia DR3) astrometry, the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the DECam Local Volume Exploration Survey (DELVE) photometry. Two density-based clustering algorithms, DBSCAN and HDBSCAN, have been used in the four-dimensional astrometric parameter space ( α 2016 , δ 2016 , μ α cos δ , μ δ ) to identify member stars belonging to MW satellite galaxies. Our results indicate that we can recover more than 80% of the known spectroscopically confirmed members in most satellite galaxies and also reject 95–100% of spectroscopic non-members. We have also added many new members using this method. We compare our results with previous studies using photometric and astrometric data and discuss the suitability of density-based clustering methods for MW satellite galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Large spectroscopic surveys plus Gaia astrometry have shown us that the inner stellar halo of the Galaxy is dominated by the debris of Gaia Enceladus/Sausage (GES). With the richness of data at hand, there are a myriad of ways these accreted stars have been selected. We investigate these GES selections and their effects on the inferred progenitor properties using data constructed from APOGEE and Gaia. We explore selections made in eccentricity, energy-angular momentum (E-Lz), radial action-angular momentum (Jr-Lz), action diamond, and [Mg/Mn]-[Al/Fe] in the observations, selecting between 144 and 1279 GES stars with varying contamination from in-situ and other accreted stars. We also use the Auriga cosmological hydrodynamic simulations to benchmark the different GES dynamical selections. Applying the same observational GES cuts to nine Auriga galaxies with a GES, we find that the Jr-Lz method is best for sample purity and the eccentricity method for completeness. Given the average metallicity of GES (−1.28 < [Fe/H] < −1.18), we use the z  = 0 mass–metallicity relationship to find an average |$\rm M_{\star }$| of ∼4 × 108 M⊙. We adopt a similar procedure and derive |$\rm M_{\star }$| for the GES-like systems in Auriga and find that the eccentricity method overestimates the true |$\rm M_{\star }$| by ∼2.6 × while E-Lz underestimates by ∼0.7 ×. Lastly, we estimate the total mass of GES to be |$\rm 10^{10.5 - 11.1}~{\rm M}_{\odot }$| using the relationship between the metallicity gradient and the GES-to- in-situ energy ratio. We conduct a survey, which explores the data releases of the European Space Agency (ESA)– Gaia mission, in order to investigate the multiplicity of exoplanet hosts at distances of less than 625 pc around the Sun. With the accurate Gaia astrometry we are able to detect stellar and substellar companions of exoplanet hosts by proving the equidistance and common proper motion of these objects. Furthermore, by using the astro- and photometric data provided by the ESA– Gaia mission, we characterize the nature of the identified companions (substellar, stellar, main-sequence, or evolved), determine their properties (mass, effective temperature, and projected separation to the associated exoplanet host), and verify their orbital stability. In addition to main-sequence stars, the companions detected in this study include several brown and white dwarfs. So far in the course of our survey, the multiplicity of more than 2200 exoplanet hosts could be investigated, yielding a multiplicity rate of about 16 per cent (increased to about 19 per cent including published detections from other surveys). Finally, the derived physical properties of the companions were used to investigate the impact of the stellar multiplicity on the properties of the exoplanets and their hosts. In general, there are significant differences in the properties of these objects, dependent on the multiplicity status of their host system, e.g. higher masses of both planets and exoplanet hosts in multiple star systems. Furthermore, the masses and orbital eccentricities of multiple star planets significantly depend on the gravitational impact, induced by the companion star of the exoplanet host. Be stars make up almost 20 per cent of the B star population, and are rapidly rotating stars surrounded by a disc; however the origin of this rotation remains unclear. Mass transfer within close binaries provides the leading hypothesis, with previous detections of stripped companions to Be stars supporting this. Here, we exploit the exquisite astrometric precision of Gaia to carry out the largest to date comparative study into the binarity of matched samples of nearby B and Be stars from the Bright Star Catalogue. By utilizing new 'proper motion anomaly' values, derived from Gaia DR2 and DR3 astrometric data alongside previous values calculated using Hipparcos and Gaia data, and the Gaia -provided RUWE, we demonstrate that we can identify unresolved binaries down to separations of 0.02 arcsec. Using these measures, we find that the binary fractions of B and Be stars are similar between 0.04 and 10 arcsec, but the Be binary fraction is significantly lower than that of the B stars for separations below 0.04 arcsec. As the separation range of these 'missing' binaries is too large for mass transfer, and stripped companions are not retrieved by these measures, we suggest the companions migrate inwards via binary hardening within a triple system. This confirms statistically for the first time the hypothesis that binary interaction causes the Be phenomenon, with migration causing the dearth of Be binaries between 0.02 and 0.04 arcsec. Furthermore, we suggest that triplicity plays a vital role in this migration, and thus in the formation of Be stars as a whole. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Light bending is one of the classical tests of general relativity and is a crucial aspect to be taken into account for accurate assessments of photon propagation. In particular, high-precision astrometry can constrain theoretical models of gravitation in the weak field limit applicable to the Sun neighborhood. We propose a concept for experimental determination of the light deflection close to the Sun in the 10 − 7 to 10 − 8 range, in a modern rendition of the 1919 experiment by Dyson, Eddington and Davidson, using formation flying to generate an artificial long-lasting eclipse. The technology is going to be demonstrated by the forthcoming ESA mission PROBA3. The experimental setup includes two units separated by 150 m and aligned to the mm level: an occulter and a small telescope (0.3 m diameter) with an annular field of view covering a region 0 ∘. 7 from the Sun. The design is compatible with a space weather payload, merging several instruments for observation of the solar corona and environment.
