Abstract

Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) is one of the most important economic crops in the world. By controlling the transport and distribution of photosynthetic products between cells and organs, sugar transporters are widely involved in growth and development, environmental adaptation, and microbial interactions. The present study was carried out at the genome-wide level to systematically characterize sugar transporters. As a result, 50 MST, 3 SUT, and 29 SWEET genes were identified and classified. The expression pattern of sugar transporters in pepper was analyzed by transcriptomic data. The expression properties of sugar transporters were further explored in pepper varieties with significant differences in weight, shape, and pungency. It was shown that the pepper sugar transporter genes had obvious spatiotemporal specific expression characteristics and exhibited variety-specific expression preferences. We focus on analyzing candidate genes that may be involved in fruit development and expansion. We further explore the response of pepper sugar transporters to adversity stress using a structural equation model. Finally, we found that the MST, SUT, and SWEET families are collectively involved in balancing pepper resistance to abiotic stress by coordinating the expression strengths of different family members. Our study may contribute to the functional study of pepper sugar transporter genes and create the prospect of utilizing sugar transporter gene resources to improve pepper variety. 19. Nonstationary background seismicity rate and evolution of stress changes in the Changning salt mining and shale-gas hydraulic fracturing region

Abstract

The MS 6.0 earthquake in Changning, Sichuan, China, on 17 June 2019 was the largest recorded earthquake in the stable Sichuan Basin. It occurred in a complicated region with salt mine and shale gas production. Whether this earthquake is induced raises concerns among the public and the scientific community. Furthermore, the relation between this earthquake and nearby industrial activities has also been of great interest. To address these questions, we estimated the nonstationary background seismicity rate and inverted for spatiotemporal stress changes. The results show that the background rate dramatically increased after hydraulic fracturing and remained at a high level until the present. Starting in 2005, the study region experienced an accelerating stress increase, and the rates of cumulative modified Coulomb stress changes were approximately 0.11 MPa/year from January 2005 to January 2015 and 0.24 MPa/year from January 2015 to December 2018. The 2019 Changning earthquake produced a stress step of 0.32 MPa. A clear difference between seismicity induced by salt mine injection and by hydraulic fracturing is documented. Our results suggest that the Changning sequence might have been induced by long-term injection for salt production. Abstract

Root lodging is known to reduce the yield and quality of maize, which will be more serious driven by the changes in agriculture such as the higher planting density and the more extreme precipitation events. Here we describe a new cultivation method to reduce the root lodging of maize. We designed two planting layouts: twin plants (TP) and single plant (SP) in a hole with the same density. The vertical root-pulling resistance, angle and rate of natural root lodging, root and shoot morphology related to root lodging and maize yield were compared between two planting layouts. TP planting significantly increased the vertical root-pulling resistance and angle of natural root lodging. This can be partly attributed to the gripping force between the staggered crown roots of the two adjacent plants. Moreover, the TP planting could increase root-lodging resistance by increasing the root angle (acute angle between the stem direction and root) and stem diameter. Additionally, TP planting did not reduce the maize yield and biomass. Consequently, our study demonstrated that the twin plants in a hole are effective to decrease the root lodging of maize in southwest of China. This technique is simple, inexpensive, safe, stable, and has broader potential for increasing maize yield and quality. Twin plants layout in wide-narrow rows significantly increased the vertical root-pulling resistance of maize, which mainly attributed to the gripping force between the staggered crown roots of the two adjacent plants.

Abstract

Using an Y(NO3)3 solution as a liquid medium, an Fe2O3-doped 8YSZ (8 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia) electrolyte can be fabricated by a cold sintering process (CSP) and a conventional sintering (CS) at 1100 °C, and a relative density of more than 95% can be achieved. The phase structure, sintering behaviour and electrical properties of the 8YSZ samples were investigated in this study. The results indicate that the sinterability of the 8YSZ electrolyte can be enhanced by the CSP. Moreover, the formation of the monoclinic phase originating from the Fe2O3 dopant was greatly suppressed by introducing the Y(NO3)3 solution into the CSP, which greatly improved the electrical properties (i.e. the ionic conductivity) of the 8YSZ electrolyte. The sintered Fe2O3-doped 8YSZ provides support for the fabrication of high-performance solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) in a convenient and energy-saving way.
