Abstract

The rare endocrine and metabolic diseases, due to their varieties, face many challenges in the study of clinical diagnosis, pathogenesis, and treatment. In the past a couple of years, the research on rare endocrine and metabolic diseases has been gradually improved. The diagnosis has made great progress. The research into molecular mechanism of rare endocrine and metabolic diseases has significantly advanced. The effort in exploring the breakthroughs and progress in therapeutic methods based on the pathogenesis of the diseases has also made. This article provides a brief overview of the current status of research into diagnosis, mechanism, and treatment of rare endocrine and metabolic diseases. In addition, the article points out the problems and challenges and proposes future possibilities.

2. Preliminary Study on the Application of Heat Pipe Reactor in Unmanned Underwater Vehicles

Abstract

At the beginning of the 21st century, due to the re-proposal of the United States space exploration program, heat pipe reactors once again received widespread attention from researchers. With their long lifespan, high energy density, and inherent safety features, they exhibit promising prospects for application in space nuclear reactors, land-based mobile nuclear power sources, and deep-sea unmanned equipment exploration. Consequently, they represent an ideal novel energy source for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). This article selected the SUBOFF submarine model as a basis to calculate UUVs’ navigation resistance at various speeds using the 1+k method. By comparing the converted UUVs navigation power demand with that of traditional batteries and heat pipe stacks’ output power, it was concluded that heat pipe reactors offer superior power supply and endurance capabilities. Subsequently, based on the structural characteristics of the heat pipe stack, this study summarized battery advantages and characteristics while also addressing construction and development aspects of heat pipe stack energy systems. Furthermore, the key technologies that need to be overcome in the application of heat pipe stacks in UUVs are introduced. Through the formula of heat transfer limit of heat pipe, the factors that limit the heat transfer performance of heat pipe are analyzed, and the positive correlation among the number of heat pipe, heat transfer limit and heat transfer power was obtained. Finally, the challenges faced by the future application of heat pipe stacks in UUVs were pointed out.

3. A low-cost integrated hyperspectral imaging sensor with full temporal and spatial resolution at VIS-NIR wide range

Abstract

Hyperspectral imaging provides optical information with high-dimensional spatial-temporal-spectral data cubes revealing intrinsic matter characteristics. It has been widely applied in various intelligent inspection applications. The existing hyperspectral imaging systems employ individual optical prism or grating to separate different spectra, which require complicated optical design that takes a heavy load for integration. The emerging multispectral imaging sensor integrates narrow-band filters on each pixel element, wasting most light throughput and trapped in the rigorous tradeoff between spatial and spectral resolution. In this work, we report an on-chip computational hyperspectral imaging framework with full spatial and temporal resolution. By integrating different broadband filtering materials on the imaging sensor, the target spectral information is non-uniformly and intrinsically coupled on each pixel with high light throughput. Using intelligent reconstruction algorithms, multi-channel images can be recovered from each frame, realizing real-time hyperspectral imaging. Following such a framework, we for the first time fabricated a broadband (400-1700 nm) hyperspectral imaging sensor with an average light throughput of 71.8$\%$ (enabling 32.5 dB peak signal-to-noise ratio of spectral reconstruction on ColorChecker Classic chart) and 89 wavelength channels (10 nm interval within 400-1000 nm and 25 nm interval within 1000-1700 nm). The average spectral resolution achieves 2.65 nm at 400-1000 nm and 8.59 nm at 1000-1700 nm. The demonstrated spatial resolution is 2048x2048 pixels at 47 fps, with $\sim$3.43 arc minute resolving ability at a 39-degree field of view. Abstract

Abstract Background The relationship between TSH and the lipid profile is contradictory because few studies have excluded the potential influence of the thyroid hormones (TH). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between serum TSH levels and the lipid profile independent of TH. Methods 1302 CHD patients diagnosed by coronary angiography were retrospectively studied. The prevalence and distribution of thyroid dysfunction were analyzed first. To assess the impact of TSH on serum lipids, Pearson’s correlation analysis was performed after adjustments for classic factors and TH. To calculate the extent of the effect of TSH on the serum cholesterol level, the partial least squares method and additional statistical methods were used. Results After the exclusions, a total of 568 patients (270 males and 298 females with a mean age of 63.56 ± 11.376 years) were selected. The prevalence of thyroid dysfunction among the patients was 18.66%, and the prevalence of hypothyroidism (15.32%) was higher than that of hyperthyroidism (3.34%). Even after adjusting for confounding factors, such as sex, age, smoking status, fasting plasma glucose levels and TH, a significant positive impact of TSH on the serum total cholesterol (TC) level was revealed (r = 0.095, p = 0.036). Each 1 mIU/L increase in the TSH level might be linked to a 0.015580712 mmol/L elevation of the serum TC value. Conclusions TSH can increase the TC level in CHD patients independent of TH. The present study suggests a potential physiological role of TSH and the importance of maintaining an appropriate TSH level in CHD patients.

Abstract

Abstract Background Obesity is known to be associated with higher risks of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes mellitus. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSHR) is the receptor for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH, or thyrotropin), the key regulator of thyroid functions. The expression of TSHR, once considered to be limited to thyrocytes, has been so far detected in many extrathyroidal tissues including liver and fat. Previous studies have shown that TSHR expression is upregulated when preadipocytes differentiate into mature adipocytes, suggestive of a possible role of TSHR in adipogenesis. However, it remains unclear whether TSHR expression in adipocytes is implicated in the pathogenesis of obesity. Methods In the present study, TSHR expression in adipose tissues from both mice and human was analyzed, and its association with obesity was evaluated. Results We here showed that TSHR expression was increased at both mRNA and protein levels when 3T3-L1 preadipocytes were induced to differentiate. Knockdown of TSHR blocked the adipocyte differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes as evaluated by Oil-red-O staining for lipid accumulation and by RT-PCR analyses of PPAR-γ and ALBP mRNA expression. We generated obesity mice (C57/BL6) by high-fat diet feeding and found that the TSHR protein expression in visceral adipose tissues from obesity mice was significantly higher in comparison with the non-obesity control mice (P < 0.05). Finally, the TSHR expression in adipose tissues was determined in 120 patients. The results showed that TSHR expression in subcutaneous adipose tissue is correlated with BMI (body mass index). Conclusion Taken together, these results suggested that TSHR is an important regulator of adipocyte differentiation. Dysregulated expression of TSHR in adipose tissues is associated with obesity, which may involve a mechanism of excess adipogenesis.

Abstract

Metasurface with gradient phase response offers new alternative for steering the propagation of waves. Conventional Snell's law has been revised by taking the contribution of local phase gradient into account. However, the requirement of momentum matching along the metasurface sets its nontrivial beam manipulation functionality within a limited-angle incidence. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that the acoustic gradient metasurface supports the negative reflection for all-angle incidence. The mode expansion theory is developed to help understand how the gradient metasurface tailors the incident beams, and the all-angle negative reflection occurs when the first negative order Floquet-Bloch mode dominates inside the metasurface slab. The coiling-up space structures are utilized to build desired acoustic gradient metasurface, and the all-angle negative reflections have been perfectly verified by experimental measurements. Our work offers the Floquet-Bloch modes perspective for qualitatively understanding the reflection behaviors of the acoustic gradient metasurface, and the all-angle negative reflection characteristic possessed by acoustic gradient metasurface could enable a new degree of the acoustic wave manipulating and be applied in the functional diffractive acoustic elements, such as the all-angle acoustic back reflector.

Abstract

There are growing efforts in constructing topological edge states in classical wave system. However, most of the work study the existence, creation and properties of the edge states, and the demonstration of application is highly desirable. Here, we present our design of a two-dimensional anisotropic phononic crystal that exhibits tunable topological phases. We further explore the contribution of anisotropy and show that the bandgap topology is also related to particular directions and frequency. Such frequency dependent behavior can be utilized as a frequency filter.

Abstract

This article explores the potential of plasma extrachromosomal circular DNA (eccDNA) as a diagnostic biomarker for distinguishing between benign and malignant thyroid nodules, specifically papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). The study utilizes Circle-seq technology and machine learning to analyze eccDNA profiles in plasma samples from healthy controls, nodular thyroid goitre patients, and PTC patients. The results show significant differences in eccDNA counts and genomic characteristics between the groups, suggesting the potential of eccDNA as a non-invasive biomarker for diagnosing thyroid cancer. Abstract

The primary concerns for individuals using lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are aging and thermal runaway (TR). This paper focuses on the thermal runaway propagation (TRP) of cycling aged LIB modules. The impacts of state of charge (SOC), state of health, and cyclic aging temperature on TRP in LIB modules are investigated. The analysis includes parameters such as temperature, voltage, and mass of the modules during TRP. It was found that as SOC increases, the maximum increase in temperature and maximum temperature rate of the modules increased, as did the total mass loss and smoke emissions. The average heat transfer between adjacent cells was higher for the lower SOC. Cycle aging reduces the thermal stability of LIBs, leading to a lower maximum temperature and maximum temperature rate, as well as a larger mass loss compared with fresh battery modules. Regarding aging temperature, low-temperature aging reduces the total duration of TRP compared with room temperature, but it increases the maximum temperature rate and causes greater mass loss. Abstract

Using the phenomenon of extraordinary sound transmission (EST) through artificially constructed density-near-zero (DNZ) materials, we propose an alternative approach to realize a very robust acoustic cloaking, which includes one absorber and one projector connected by an energy channel. The elementary unit cell is made of one single-piece homogeneous copper, but it well maintains both the original planar wavefront and the nearly perfect one-dimensional transmission, in the presence of any inserted objects. Furthermore, the overall cloaked space can be increased, designed, and distributed by arbitrarily assembling additional DNZ cells without any upper limit in the total cloaking volume. We demonstrate acoustic cloaking by different combinations of DNZ cells in free space as well as in acoustic waveguides, which enables any objects inside the cells imperceptible along undistorted sound paths.

Abstract

To solve the gas pre-drainage problem of high gas low permeability coal seam, based on LS-DYNA3D nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis software, the process of forming jet by perforating charge crushing shaped charge liner and penetrating coal seam is simulated. The formation of metal jet and the action range of penetrating coal seam are analyzed, and the penetrating depth is 1.4 m. The comparison is made with non-shaped charge liner penetrating coal seam. The results showed that the penetration depth increased by 250% and the active area increased by 2 592%.

Abstract

Optical wavefront can be manipulated by interfering elementary beams with phase inhomogeneity. Therefore a surface allowing huge, abrupt and position-variant phase change would enable all possibilities of wavefront engineering. However, one may not have the luxury of efficient abrupt-phase-changing materials in acoustics. This motivates us to establish a counterpart mechanism for acoustics, in order to empower the wide spectrum of novel acoustic applications. Remarkably, the proposed impedance-governed generalized Snell's law (IGSL) of reflection is distinguished from that in optics. Via the manipulation of inhomogeneous acoustic impedance, extraordinary reflection can be tailored for unprecedented wavefront manipulation while ordinary reflection can be surprisingly switched on or off.
