Abstract

In scientific applications, there often are several competing models that could be fit to the observed data, so quantification of the model uncertainty is of fundamental importance. In this paper, we develop an inferential model (IM) approach for simultaneously valid probabilistic inference over a collection of assertions of interest without requiring any prior input. Our construction guarantees that the approach is optimal in the sense that it is the most efficient among those which are valid. Connections between the IM's simultaneous validity and post-selection inference are also made. We apply the general results to obtain valid uncertainty quantification about the set of predictor variables to be included in a linear regression model., Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures, 2 pages of supplementary material

Abstract

Seemingly trivial eating habits, such as eating too fast, have been linked to diverse and rather serious health issues. While technology-mediated interventions have leveraged several strategies to promote healthy dietary habits, designing successful pervasive interventions remains challenging. This thesis first offers three contributions with the aim of assisting in the design of eating interventions: 1) a review of 62 studies which focused on interventions targeting eating habits; 2) a generative design framework with multiple design parameters; and, 3) an exploration of the potential efficacy of the developed framework. These contributions will improve designers’ comprehension and ability to apply current trends and state of the art technologies in the design space. Heightened food intake rates (i.e., eating too fast) are linked to several health concerns such as an elevated risk of obesity or gastritis. In this thesis, a novel smart-eating utensil is proposed, which can potentially increase the users’ awareness of their eating rate by detecting their food pick-up gesture as well as the weight of the food on the utensil before each bite. A proof-of- concept prototype fork with multiple embedded sensors and a processor to collect the eating data was designed and implemented. Following this, a solution was proposed for the food pick-up gesture detection and food amount estimation in each bite. The accuracy of our solution is assessed through ten successful data collection sessions with participants. A low fidelity proof-of-concept prototype device has been developed to demonstrate the feasibility of applying a pneumatically actuated shape-changing interface to embed physical interference into an eating utensil. A high fidelity, self-contained prototype smart fork was built with the ability to detect the food pick up gesture and provide the bending fork feedback to the users. 31. Coupling of Modular High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor with Supercritical Rankine Cycle

Abstract

This paper presents investigations on the possible combination of modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (MHTGR) technology with the supercritical (SC) steam turbine technology and the prospective deployments of the MHTGR SC power plant. Energy conversion efficiency of steam turbine cycle can be improved by increasing the main steam pressure and temperature. Investigations on SC water reactor (SCWR) reveal that the development of SCWR power plants still needs further research and development. The MHTGR SC plant coupling the existing technologies of current MHTGR module design with operation experiences of SC FPP will achieve high cycle efficiency in addition to its inherent safety. The standard once-reheat SC steam turbine cycle and the once-reheat steam cycle with life-steam have been studied and corresponding parameters were computed. Efficiencies of thermodynamic processes of MHTGR SC plants were analyzed, while comparisons were made between an MHTGR SC plant and a designed advanced passive PWR - AP1000. It was shown that the net plant efficiency of an MHTGR SC plant can reach 45% or above, 30% higher than that of AP1000 (35% net efficiency). Furthermore, an MHTGR SC plant has higher environmental competitiveness without emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants.

32. The Shandong Shidao Bay 200 MWeHigh-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Pebble-Bed Module (HTR-PM) Demonstration Power Plant: An Engineering and Technological Innovation

Abstract

After the first concrete was poured on December 9, 2012 at the Shidao Bay site in Rongcheng, Shandong Province, China, the construction of the reactor building for the world's first high-temperature gas-cooled reactor pebble-bed module (HTR-PM) demonstration power plant was completed in June, 2015. Installation of the main equipment then began, and the power plant is currently progressing well toward connecting to the grid at the end of 2017. The thermal power of a single HTR-PM reactor module is 250 MWth, the helium temperatures at the reactor core inlet/outlet are 250/750 °C, and a steam of 13.25 MPa/567 °C is produced at the steam generator outlet. Two HTR-PM reactor modules are connected to a steam turbine to form a 210 MWenuclear power plant. Due to China's industrial capability, we were able to overcome great difficulties, manufacture first-of-a-kind equipment, and realize series major technological innovations. We have achieved successful results in many aspects, including planning and implementing R&D, establishing an industrial partnership, manufacturing equipment, fuel production, licensing, site preparation, and balancing safety and economics; these obtained experiences may also be referenced by the global nuclear community.
