Hybrid magnonic systems have emerged as a promising direction for information propagation with preserved coherence. Due to high tunability of magnons, their interactions with microwave photons can be engineered to probe novel phenomena based on strong photon-magnon coupling. Improving the photon-magnon coupling strength can be done by tuning the structure of microwave resonators to better interact with the magnon counterpart. Planar resonators have been explored due to their potential for on-chip integration, but only common modes from stripline-based resonators have been used. Here, we present a microwave spiral resonator supporting the spoof localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and implement it to the investigation of photon-magnon coupling for hybrid magnonic applications. We showcase strong magnon-LSP photon coupling using a ferrimagnetic yttrium iron garnet sphere. We discuss the dependence of the spiral resonator design to the engineering capacity of the photon mode frequency and spatial field distributions, via both experiment and simulation. By the localized photon mode profiles, the resulting magnetic field concentrates near the surface dielectrics, giving rise to an enhanced magnetic filling factor. The strong coupling and large engineering space render the spoof LSPs an interesting contender in developing novel hybrid magnonic systems and functionalities., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures

Superconducting circuits, like Adiabatic Quantum-Flux-Parametron (AQFP), offer exceptional energy efficiency but face challenges in physical design due to sophisticated spacing and timing constraints. Current design tools often neglect the importance of constraint adherence throughout the entire design flow. In this paper, we propose SuperFlow, a fully-customized RTL-to-GDS design flow tailored for AQFP devices. SuperFlow leverages a synthesis tool based on CMOS technology to transform any input RTL netlist to an AQFP-based netlist. Subsequently, we devise a novel place-and-route procedure that simultaneously considers wirelength, timing, and routability for AQFP circuits. The process culminates in the generation of the AQFP circuit layout, followed by a Design Rule Check (DRC) to identify and rectify any layout violations. Our experimental results demonstrate that SuperFlow achieves 12.8% wirelength improvement on average and 12.1% better timing quality compared with previous state-of-the-art placers for AQFP circuits., Comment: Accepted by DATE 2024

Cavity electromagnonic system, which simultaneously consists of cavities for photons, magnons (quanta of spin waves), and acoustic phonons, provides an exciting platform to achieve coherent energy transduction among different physical systems down to single quantum level. Here we report a dynamical phase-field model that allows simulating the coupled dynamics of the electromagnetic waves, magnetization, and strain in 3D multiphase systems. As examples of application, we computationally demonstrate the excitation of hybrid magnon-photon modes (magnon polaritons), Floquet-induced magnonic Aulter-Townes splitting, dynamical energy exchange (Rabi oscillation) and relative phase control (Ramsey interference) between the two magnon polariton modes. The simulation results are consistent with analytical calculations based on Floquet Hamiltonian theory. Simulations are also performed to design a cavity electro-magno-mechanical system that enables the triple phonon-magnon-photon resonance, where the resonant excitation of a chiral, fundamental (n=1) transverse acoustic phonon mode by magnon polaritons is demonstrated. With the capability to predict coupling strength, dissipation rates, and temporal evolution of photon/magnon/phonon mode profiles using fundamental materials parameters as the inputs, the present dynamical phase-field model represents a valuable computational tool to guide the fabrication of the cavity electromagnonic system and the design of operating conditions for applications in quantum sensing, transduction, and communication.

Terahertz (THz) spin waves or their quanta, magnons, can be efficiently excited by acoustic phonons because these excitations have similar wavevectors in the THz regime. THz acoustic phonons can be produced using photoacoustic phenomena but typically have a low population and thus a relatively low displacement amplitude. The magnetization amplitude and population of the acoustically excited THz magnons are thus usually small. Using analytical calculations and dynamical phase-field simulations, we show that a freestanding metal/magnetic-insulator (MI)/dielectric multilayer can be designed to produce large-amplitude THz spin wave via cavity-enhanced magnon-phonon interaction. The amplitude of the acoustically excited THz spin wave in the freestanding multilayer is predicted to be more than ten times larger than in a substrate-supported multilayer. Acoustically excited nonlinear magnon-magnon interaction is demonstrated in the freestanding multilayer. The simulations also indicate that the magnon modes can be detected by probing the charge current in the metal layer generated via spin-charge conversion across the MI/metal interface and the resulting THz radiation. Applications of the freestanding multilayer in THz optoelectronic transduction are computationally demonstrated.

Cavity magnonics is an emerging research area focusing on the coupling between magnons and photons. Despite its great potential for coherent information processing, it has been long restricted by the narrow interaction bandwidth. In this work, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel approach to achieve broadband photon-magnon coupling by adopting slow waves on engineered microwave waveguides. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that slow wave is combined with hybrid magnonics. Its unique properties promise great potentials for both fundamental research and practical applications, for instance, by deepening our understanding of the light-matter interaction in the slow wave regime and providing high-efficiency spin wave transducers. Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) magnonics has sparked extensive research interests toward harnessing magnons (quasiparticles of collective spin excitation) for signal processing. In particular, YIG magnonics-based hybrid systems exhibit great potentials for quantum information science because of their wide frequency tunability and excellent compatibility with other platforms. However, the broad application and scalability of thin-film YIG devices in the quantum regime has been severely limited due to the substantial microwave loss in the host substrate for YIG, gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG), at cryogenic temperatures. In this study, we demonstrate that substrate-free YIG thin films can be obtained by introducing the controlled spalling and layer transfer technology to YIG/GGG samples. Our approach is validated by measuring a hybrid device consisting of a superconducting resonator and a spalled YIG film, which gives a strong coupling feature indicating the good coherence of our system. The opto-electronic oscillators (OEOs) hosting self-sustained oscillations by a time delayed mechanism are of particular interest in long-haul signal transmission and processing. On the other hand, owing to their unique tunability and compatibility, magnons - as elementary excitations of spin waves - are advantageous carriers for coherent signal transduction across different platforms. In this work, we integrated an opto-electronic oscillator with a magnonic oscillator consisting of a microwave waveguide and a yttrium iron garnet sphere. We find that, in the presence of the magnetic sphere, the oscillator power spectrum exhibits sidebands flanking the fundamental OEO modes. The measured waveguide transmission reveals anti-crossing gaps, a hallmark of the coupling between the opto-electronic oscillator modes and the Walker modes of the sphere. Experimental results are well reproduced by a coupled-mode theory that accounts for nonlinear magnetostrictive interactions mediated by the magnetic sphere. Leveraging the advanced fiber-optic technologies in opto-electronics, this work lays out a new, hybrid platform for investigating long distance coupling and nonlinearity in coherent magnonic phenomena., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

Quantum memories facilitate the storage and retrieval of quantum information for on-chip and long-distance quantum communications. Thus, they play a critical role in quantum information processing and have diverse applications ranging from aerospace to medical imaging fields. Bulk acoustic wave (BAW) phonons are one of the most attractive candidates for quantum memories because of their long lifetime and high operating frequency. In this work, we establish a modeling approach that can be broadly used to design hybrid magnonic high-overtone bulk acoustic wave resonator (HBAR) structures for high-density, long-lasting quantum memories and efficient quantum transduction devices. We illustrate the approach by investigating a hybrid magnonic system, where BAW phonons are excited in a gadolinium iron garnet (GGG) thick film via coupling with magnons in a patterned yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin film. We present theoretical and numerical analyses of the diffraction-limited BAW phonon lifetimes, modeshapes, and their coupling strengths to magnons in planar and confocal YIG/GGG HBAR structures. We utilize Fourier beam propagation and Hankel transform eigenvalue problem methods and discuss the effectiveness of the two methods to predict the HBAR phonons. We discuss strategies to improve the phonon lifetimes, since increased lifetimes have direct implications on the storage times of quantum states for quantum memory applications. We find that ultra-high, diffraction-limited, cooperativities and phonon lifetimes on the order of ~10^5 and ~10 milliseconds, respectively, could be achieved using a CHBAR structure with 10mum lateral YIG dimension. Additionally, the confocal HBAR structure will offer more than 100-fold improvement of integration density. Recently, anomalies in the temperature dependences of the carrier density and/or mobility derived from analysis of the magnetoresistivities using the conventional two-band model have been used to unveil intriguing temperature-induced Lifshitz transitions in various materials. For instance, two temperature-driven Lifshitz transitions were inferred to exist in the Dirac nodal-line semimetal ZrSiSe, based on two-band model analysis of the Hall magnetoconductivities where the second band exhibits a change in the carrier type from holes to electrons when the temperature decreases below T = 106 K and a dip is observed in the mobility versus temperature curve at T = 80 K. Here, we revisit the experiments and two-band model analysis on ZrSiSe. We show that the anomalies in the second band may be spurious, because the first band dominates the Hall magnetoconductivities at T > 80 K, making the carrier type and mobility obtained for the second band from the two-band model analysis unreliable. That is, care must be taken in interpreting these anomalies as evidences for temperature-driven Lifshitz transitions. Our skepticism on the existence of such phase transitions in ZrSiSe is further supported by the validation of the Kohler's rule for magnetoresistances at temperatures below 180 K. This work showcases potential issues in interpreting anomalies in the temperature dependence of the carrier density and mobility derived from the analysis of magnetoconductivities or magnetoresistivities using the conventional two-band model.

Electron charge qubits are compelling candidates for solid-state quantum computing because of their inherent simplicity in qubit design, fabrication, control, and readout. However, all existing electron charge qubits, built upon conventional semiconductors and superconductors, suffer from severe charge noise that limits the coherence time to the order of 1 microsecond. Here, we report our experimental realization of ultralong-coherence electron charge qubits, based upon isolated single electrons trapped on an ultraclean solid neon surface in vacuum. Quantum information is encoded in the motional states of an electron that is strongly coupled with microwave photons in an on-chip superconducting resonator. The measured relaxation time $T_1$ and coherence time $T_2$ are both on the order of 0.1 milliseconds. The single-shot readout fidelity without using a quantum-limited amplifier is 98.1%. The average single-qubit gate fidelity using Clifford-based randomized benchmarking is 99.97%. Simultaneous strong coupling of two qubits with the same resonator is demonstrated, as a first step toward two-qubit entangling gates for universal quantum computing. These results manifest that the electron-on-solid-neon (eNe) charge qubits outperform all existing charge qubits to date and rival state-of-the-art superconducting transmon qubits, offering an appealing platform for quantum computing., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Recent research on hybrid magnonics has been restricted by the long magnon wavelengths of the ferromagnetic resonance modes. We present an experiment on the hybridization of 250-nm wavelength magnons with microwave photons in a multimode magnonic system consists of a planar cavity and a magnetic bilayer. The coupling between magnon modes in the two magnetic layers, i.e., the uniform mode in Permalloy (Py) and the perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSWs) in YIG, serves as an effective means for exciting short-wavelength PSSWs, which is further hybridized with the photon mode of the microwave resonator. The demonstrated magnon-photon coupling approaches the superstrong coupling regime, and can even be achieved near zero bias field., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

A notable phenomenon in topological semimetals is the violation of Kohler$^,$s rule, which dictates that the magnetoresistance $MR$ obeys a scaling behavior of $MR = f(H/\rho_0$), where $MR = [\rho_H-\rho_0]/\rho_0$ and $H$ is the magnetic field, with $\rho_H$ and $\rho_0$ being the resistivity at $H$ and zero field, respectively. Here we report a violation originating from thermally-induced change in the carrier density. We find that the magnetoresistance of the Weyl semimetal, TaP, follows an extended Kohler$^,$s rule $MR = f[H/(n_T\rho_0)]$, with $n_T$ describing the temperature dependence of the carrier density. We show that $n_T$ is associated with the Fermi level and the dispersion relation of the semimetal, providing a new way to reveal information on the electronic bandstructure. We offer a fundamental understanding of the violation and validity of Kohler$^,$s rule in terms of different temperature-responses of $n_T$. We apply our extended Kohler$^,$s rule to BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ to settle a long-standing debate on the scaling behavior of the normal-state magnetoresistance of a superconductor, namely, $MR$ ~ $tan^2\theta_H$, where $\theta_H$ is the Hall angle. We further validate the extended Kohler$^,$s rule and demonstrate its generality in a semiconductor, InSb, where the temperature-dependent carrier density can be reliably determined both theoretically and experimentally.

Progress toward the realization of quantum computers requires persistent advances in their constituent building blocks - qubits. Novel qubit platforms that simultaneously embody long coherence, fast operation, and large scalability offer compelling advantages in the construction of quantum computers and many other quantum information systems. Electrons, ubiquitous elementary particles of nonzero charge, spin, and mass, have commonly been perceived as paradigmatic local quantum information carriers. Despite superior controllability and configurability, their practical performance as qubits via either motional or spin states depends critically on their material environment. Here we report our experimental realization of a new qubit platform based upon isolated single electrons trapped on an ultraclean solid neon surface in vacuum. By integrating an electron trap in a circuit quantum electrodynamics architecture, we achieve strong coupling between the motional states of a single electron and a single microwave photon in an on-chip superconducting resonator. Qubit gate operations and dispersive readout are implemented to measure the energy relaxation time $T_1$ of $15~\mu$s and phase coherence time $T_2$ over $200~$ns. These results indicate that the electron-on-solid-neon qubit already performs near the state of the art as a charge qubit., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

Single-mode high-index-contrast waveguides have been ubiquitously exploited in optical, microwave, and phononic structures for achieving enhanced wave-matter interactions. Although micro-scale optomechanical and electro-optical devices have been widely studied, optomagnonic devices remain a grand challenge at the microscale. Here, we introduce a planar optomagnonic waveguide platform based on a ferrimagnetic insulator that simultaneously supports single transverse mode of spin waves (magnons) and highly confined optical modes. The co-localization of spin and light waves gives rise to enhanced inverse Faraday effect, and as a result, magnons are excited by an effective magnetic field generated by interacting optical photons. Moreover, the strongly enhanced optomagnonic interaction allows us to observe such effect using low-power (milliwatt level) light signals in the continuous-wave form, as opposed to high-intensity (megawatt peak power) light pulses that are typically required in magnetic bulk materials or thin films. The optically-driven magnons are detected electrically with preserved phase coherence, showing the feasibility for launching spin waves with low-power continuous optical fields.

We theoretically demonstrate that the high-critical-temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ (BSCCO) is a natural candidate for the recently envisioned classical space-time crystal. BSCCO intrinsically forms a stack of Josephson junctions. Under a periodic parametric modulation of the Josephson critical current density, the Josephson currents develop coupled space-time crystalline order, breaking the continuous translational symmetry in both space and time. The modulation frequency and amplitude span a (nonequilibrium) phase diagram for a so-defined spatiotemporal order parameter, which displays rigid pattern formation within a particular region of the phase diagram. Based on our calculations using representative material properties, we propose a laser-modulation experiment to realize the predicted space-time crystalline behavior. Hybrid magnonics has recently attracted intensive attentions as a promising platform for coherent information processing. In spite of its rapid development, on-demand control over the interaction of magnons with other information carriers, in particular microwave photons in electromagnonic systems, has been long missing, significantly limiting the broad applications of hybrid magnonics. Here, we show that by introducing Floquet engineering into cavity electromagnonics, coherent control on the magnon-microwave photon coupling can be realized. Leveraging the periodic temporal modulation from a Floquet drive, our first-of-its-kind Floquet cavity electromagnonic system can manipulate the interaction between hybridized cavity electromagnonic modes on demand. Moreover, we demonstrate a new coupling regime in such systems: the Floquet ultrastrong coupling, where the Floquet splitting is comparable with or even larger than the level spacing of the two interacting modes, resulting in the breakdown of the rotating wave approximation. Cavity optomagnonics has emerged as a promising platform for studying coherent photon-spin interactions as well as tunable microwave-to-optical conversion. However, current implementation of cavity optomagnonics in ferrimagnetic crystals remains orders of magnitude larger in volume than state-of-the-art cavity optomechanical devices, resulting in very limited magneto-optical interaction strength. Here, we demonstrate a cavity optomagnonic device based on integrated waveguides and its application for microwave-to-optical conversion. By designing a ferrimagnetic rib waveguide to support multiple magnon modes with maximal mode overlap to the optical field, we realize a high magneto-optical cooperativity which is three orders of magnitude higher compared to previous records obtained on polished YIG spheres. Furthermore, we achieve tunable conversion of microwave photons at around 8.45 GHz to 1550 nm light with a broad conversion bandwidth as large as 16.1 MHz. The unique features of the system point to novel applications at the crossroad between quantum optics and magnonics.

Intrinsic Josephson junctions in high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 are known for their capability to emit high-power terahertz photons with widely tunable frequencies. Hotspots, as inhomogeneous temperature distributions across the junctions, are believed to play a critical role in synchronizing the gauge-invariant phase difference among the junctions, so as to achieve coherent strong emission. Previous optical imaging techniques have indirectly suggested that the hotspot temperature can go higher than the superconductor critical temperature. However, such optical approaches often disturb the local temperature profile and are too slow for device applications. In this paper, we demonstrate an on-chip in situ sensing technique that can precisely quantify the local temperature profile. This is achieved by fabricating a series of micro "sensor" junctions on top of an "emitter" junction and measuring the critical current on the sensors versus the bias current applied to the emitter. This fully electronic on-chip design could enable efficient close-loop control of hotspots in BSCCO junctions and significantly enhance the functionality of superconducting terahertz emitters., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We demonstrate the magnetically-induced transparency (MIT) effect in Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$(YIG)/Permalloy(Py) coupled bilayers. The measurement is achieved via a heterodyne detection of the coupled magnetization dynamics using a single wavelength that probes the magneto-optical Kerr and Faraday effects of Py and YIG, respectively. Clear features of the MIT effect are evident from the deeply modulated ferromagnetic resonance of Py due to the perpendicular-standing-spin-wave of YIG. We develop a phenomenological model that nicely reproduces the experimental results including the induced amplitude and phase evolution caused by the magnon-magnon coupling. Non-reciprocity of signal transmission enhances capacity of communication channels and protects transmission quality against possible signal instabilities, thus becoming an important component ensuring coherent information processing. However, non-reciprocal transmission requires breaking time-reversal symmetry (TRS) which poses challenges of both practical and fundamental character hindering the progress. Here we report a new scheme for achieving broadband non-reciprocity using a specially engineered hybrid microwave cavity. The TRS breaking is realized via strong coherent coupling between a selected chiral mode in the microwave cavity and a single collective spin excitation (magnon) in a ferromagnetic yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere. The non-reciprocity in transmission is observed spanning nearly a 0.5 GHz frequency band, which outperforms by two orders of magnitude the previously achieved bandwidths. Exceptional points (EPs) are singularities of energy levels in non-Hermitian systems. In this Letter, we demonstrate the surface of EPs on a magnon polariton platform composed of coupled magnons and microwave photons. Our experiments show that EPs form a three-dimensional exceptional surface (ES) when the system is tuned in a four-dimensional synthetic space. We demonstrated that there exists an exceptional saddle point (ESP) in the ES which originates from the unique couplings between magnons and microwave photons. Such an ESP exhibits unique anisotropic behaviors in both the real and imaginary part of the eigenfrequencies. Single electrons can be conceived as the simplest quantum nodes in a quantum network. Between electrons, single photons can act as quantum channels to exchange quantum information. Despite this appealing picture, in conventional materials, it is extremely difficult to make individual electrons and photons coherently interact with each other at the visible-infrared wavelengths suitable for long-distance communication. Here we theoretically demonstrate that the self-confined single-electron structure in condensed helium-4 can be a fascinating candidate for single-electron quantum nodes. Each electron in helium forms a bubble of 1 to 2 nm radius and coherently interacts with mid-infrared photons. A parametrically amplified femtosecond laser can drive the electrons into any superposition between the ground and excited states. An electron inside a slot-waveguide cavity can strongly couple with cavity photons and exhibits vacuum Rabi oscillations. Two electrons in the cavity naturally generate entanglement through their respective coupling to the lossy cavity. We demonstrate patterned growth of epitaxial yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin films using lithographically defined templates on gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrates. The fabricated YIG nanostructures yield the desired crystallographic orientation, excellent surface morphology, and narrow ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidth (~ 4 Oe). Shape-induced magnetic anisotropy is clearly observed in a patterned array of nanobars engineered to exhibit the larger coercivity (40 Oe) compared with that of continuous films. Both hysteresis loop and angle-dependent FMR spectra measurements indicate that the easy axis aligns along the longitudinal direction of the nanobars, with an effective anisotropy field of 195 Oe. Our work overcomes difficulties in patterning YIG thin films and provides an effective means to control their magnetic properties and magnetic bias conditions.

We experimentally demonstrate high quality factor spin wave resonances in an encapsulated thin film of the organic-based ferrimagnet vanadium tetracyanoethylene (V[TCNE]$_\textit{x~2}$) coated on an a-plane sapphire substrate by low temperature chemical vapor deposition. The thickness standing wave modes are observed in a broad frequency range (1 GHz ~ 5 GHz) with high quality factor exceeding 3,200 in ambient air at room temperature, rivaling those of inorganic magnetic materials. The exchange constant of V[TCNE]$_\textit{x~2}$, a crucial material parameter for future study and device design of the V[TCNE]$_\textit{x~2}$, is extracted from the measurement with a value of $(4.61\pm 0.35)\times 10^{-16} \mathrm{\: m^{2}}$. Coherent conversion of photons to magnons, and back, provides a natural mechanism for rapid control of interactions between stationary spins with long coherence times and high-speed photons. Despite the large frequency difference between optical photons and magnons, coherent conversion can be achieved through a three-particle interaction between one magnon and two photons whose frequency difference is resonant with the magnon frequency, as in optomechanics with two photons and a phonon. The large spin density of a transparent ferromagnetic insulator (such as the ferrite yttrium iron garnet) in an optical cavity provides an intrinsic photon-magnon coupling strength that we calculate to exceed reported optomechanical couplings. A large cavity photon number and properly selected cavity detuning produce a predicted effective coupling strength sufficient for observing electromagnetically induced transparency and the Purcell effect, and even to reach the ultra-strong coupling regime., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; added Table I; corrected typos; PRB(R) in press

A dielectric body couples with electromagnetic fields through radiation pressure and electrostrictive forces, which mediate phonon-photon coupling in cavity optomechanics. In a magnetic medium, according to Korteweg-Helmholtz formula, magnetostrictive forces should arise and lead to phonon-magnon interaction. Here we report such a coupled phonon-magnon system based on ferrimagnetic spheres, which we term as cavity magnomechanics, by analogy to cavity optomechanics. Coherent phonon-magnon interactions, including electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption, are demonstrated. Excitingly, due to strong hybridization of magnon and microwave photon modes and their high tunability, our platform exhibits new features including parametric amplification of magnons and phonons, triply resonant photon-magnon-phonon coupling and phonon lasing. Magnons in ferrimagnetic insulators such as yttrium iron garnet (YIG) have recently emerged as promising candidates for coherent information processing in microwave circuits. Here we demonstrate optical whispering gallery modes of a YIG sphere interrogated by a silicon nitride photonic waveguide, with quality factors approaching $10^6$ in the telecom c-band after surface treatments. Moreover, in contrast to conventional Faraday setup, this implementation allows input photon polarized colinearly to the magnetization to be scattered to a sideband mode of orthogonal polarization. This Brillouin scattering process is enhanced through triply resonant magnon, pump and signal photon modes - all of whispering gallery nature - within an "optomagnonic cavity".
