Dit onderzoek richt zich grotendeels op uitstootvrij wegverkeer

Mensen die in de buurt van Schiphol wonen staan regelmatig bloot aan verhoogde concentraties ultrafijn stof. Ultrafijn stof is het aantal zeer kleine deeltjes in de lucht (kleiner dan 0,1 micrometer). De blootstelling aan ultrafijn stof rond Schiphol kan kortdurend effect hebben op de gezondheid, blijkt uit onderzoek van het RIVM. Op zulke dagen hebben kinderen meer last van luchtwegklachten, zoals kortademigheid en piepende ademhaling. Ook gebruiken kinderen dan meer medicijnen. De effecten treden vooral op bij kinderen die al klachten aan de luchtwegen hebben en hiervoor al medicijnen gebruiken. Bij kinderen en gezonde volwassenen zijn kortdurende verminderingen in de longfunctie gemeten en bij de gezonde volwassen is ook kortdurende vermindering van de hartfunctie gemeten bij tijdelijk hogere blootstelling. Gemiddeld genomen zijn deze veranderingen klein en hoeven ze niet tot directe gezondheidsklachten te leiden. Voor individuen die hiervoor gevoelig zijn, bijvoorbeeld omdat ze astma of hartaandoeningen hebben, kunnen deze veranderingen groter zijn. De effecten treden zowel op bij ultrafijn stof afkomstig van vliegverkeer als bij ultrafijn stof van andere bronnen, zoals wegverkeer. Er zijn geen aanwijzingen gevonden dat de gezondheidseffecten van het vliegverkeer anders zijn dan die van het wegverkeer. De conclusies zijn gebaseerd op drie deelstudies: een studie met 191 basisschoolkinderen in woonkernen vlakbij Schiphol, een studie met 21 gezonde volwassenen direct naast Schiphol en een laboratoriumstudie met longcellen. De resultaten van dit onderzoek geven nog geen inzicht in mogelijke lange termijn gezondheidseffecten van ultrafijnstof. Dit komt aan bod in het deelonderzoek naar de effecten van langdurige blootstelling aan ultrafijn stof van vliegverkeer. De resultaten hiervan worden in 2021 verwacht.

Het RIVM en de GGD'en hebben de GGD-richtlijn 'Luchtkwaliteit en Gezondheid' uit 2008 geactualiseerd. De vernieuwde richtlijn biedt onder meer een actueel overzicht van wetenschappelijke studies naar gezondheid en luchtkwaliteit en de betekenis van nieuwe (Europese) beleidsontwikkelingen. Ook wordt uitgelegd hoe luchtkwaliteit wordt gemeten en berekend. De nadruk ligt op wegverkeer-gerelateerde luchtverontreiniging, maar ook de invloed van bijvoorbeeld andere verkeersbronnen (zoals scheepvaart en brommers), industrie, landbouw en houtrook op de luchtkwaliteit komt aan bod. De richtlijn is geactualiseerd, omdat de kennis over luchtverontreiniging en de effecten op de gezondheid de afgelopen jaren zijn toegenomen. Een betere luchtkwaliteit levert gezondheidswinst op, ook als de concentraties luchtvervuilende stoffen onder de gestelde normen liggen. Hoewel de luchtkwaliteit de laatste decennia is verbeterd, worden op een aantal locaties in Nederland de Europese grenswaarden overschreden. Verbetering is noodzakelijk om deze situaties positief te beïnvloeden en toekomstige hoge blootstellingen aan vervuilende stoffen te voorkomen. De richtlijn is een hulpmiddel voor de GGD'en om gemeenten en provincies te adviseren en burgers te informeren over de lokale luchtkwaliteit. GGD'en kunnen voorstellen doen om de luchtkwaliteit te verbeteren en advies geven over de ruimtelijke inrichting nabij drukke verkeerswegen. Op basis van advies van de GGD kunnen gemeenten aanvullend lokaal beleid formuleren om de bevolking, en hooggevoelige groepen in het bijzonder, te beschermen. Daarnaast kan de GGD erop wijzen dat goede communicatie tussen gemeenten en de bevolking over dit onderwerp belangrijk is en hiervoor praktische adviezen geven. De GGD-richtlijnen medische milieukunde (MMK) zijn bedoeld om het handelen van GGD'en te harmoniseren en te optimaliseren.

Coastal and inland dunes provide various ecosystem services that are related to groundwater, such as drinking water production and biodiversity. To manage groundwater in a sustainable manner, knowledge of actual evapotranspiration (ETa) for the various land covers in dunes is essential. Aiming at improving the parameterization of dune vegetation in hydrometeorological models, this study explores the magnitude of energy and water fluxes in an inland dune ecosystem in the Netherlands. Hydrometeorological measurements were used to parameterize the Penman–Monteith evapotranspiration model for four different surfaces: bare sand, moss, grass and heather. We found that the net longwave radiation (Rnl) was the largest energy flux for most surfaces during daytime. However, modeling this flux by a calibrated FAO-56 Rnl model for each surface and for hourly time steps was unsuccessful. Our Rnl model, with a novel submodel using solar elevation angle and air temperature to describe the diurnal pattern in radiative surface temperature, improved Rnl simulations considerably. Model simulations of evaporation from moss surfaces showed that the modulating effect of mosses on the water balance is species-dependent. We demonstrate that dense moss carpets (Campylopus introflexus) evaporate more (5 %, +14 mm) than bare sand (total of 258 mm in 2013), while more open-structured mosses (Hypnum cupressiforme) evaporate less (−30 %, −76 mm) than bare sand. Additionally, we found that a drought event in the summer of 2013 showed a pronounced delayed signal on lysimeter measurements of ETa for the grass and heather surfaces, respectively. Due to the desiccation of leaves after the drought event, and their feedback on the surface resistance, the potential evapotranspiration in the year 2013 dropped by 9 % (−37 mm) and 10 % (−61 mm) for the grass and heather surfaces, respectively, which subsequently led to lowered ETa of 8 % (−29 mm) and 7 % (−29 mm). These feedbacks are of importance for water resources, especially during a changing climate with an increasing number of drought days. Therefore, such feedbacks need to be integrated into a coupled plant physiological and hydrometeorological model to accurately simulate ETa. In addition, our study showed that groundwater recharge in dunes can be increased considerably by promoting moss vegetation, especially of open-structured moss species.

Deception detection is valuable in the security domain to distinguish truth from lies. It is desirable in many security applications, such as suspect and witness interviews and airport passenger screening. Interviewers are constantly trying to assess the credibility of a statement, usually based on intuition without objective technical support. However, psychological research has shown that humans can hardly perform better than random guessing. Deception detection is a multi-disciplinary research area with an interest from different fields, such as psychology and computer science. In the last decade, several developments have helped to improve the accuracy of lie detection (e.g., with a concealed information test, increasing the cognitive load, or measurements with motion capture suits) and relevant cues have been discovered (e.g., eye blinking or fiddling with the fingers). With an increasing presence of mobile phones and bodycams in society, a mobile, stand-off, automatic deception detection methodology based on various cues from the whole body would create new application opportunities. In this paper, we study the feasibility of measuring these visual cues automatically on different parts of the body, laying the groundwork for stand-off deception detection in more flexible and mobile deployable sensors, such as body-worn cameras. We give an extensive overview of recent developments in two communities: in the behavioral-science community the developments that improve deception detection with a special attention to the observed relevant non-verbal cues, and in the computer-vision community the recent methods that are able to measure these cues. The cues are extracted from several body parts: the eyes, the mouth, the head and the full-body pose. We performed an experiment using several state-of-the-art video-content-analysis (VCA) techniques to assess the quality of robustly measuring these visual cues.

Met bijna achthonderd scholen maakt het traditioneel vernieuwingsonderwijs substantieel deel uit van het Nederlandse basisonderwijs: zo’n tien procent van het totaal aantal basisscholen is een traditionele vernieuwingsschool. Ongeveer de helft van de vernieuwingsscholen in ons land is een erkende daltonschool. Gezien de omvang en populariteit van daltononderwijs is het opmerkelijk dat er nauwelijks onderzoek naar de effectiviteit van dit type onderwijs is gedaan. Doel van deze studie is het vergelijken van de cognitieve en niet-cognitieve prestaties en burgerschapscompetenties van leerlingen op daltonbasisscholen met die van leerlingen op traditioneel ingerichte basisscholen. De scores van leerlingen in groepen 2, 5 en 8 op de gebieden taal, lezen, rekenen (cognitieve prestaties), welbevinden, cognitief zelfvertrouwen, taakmotivatie (niet-cognitieve prestaties) en burgerschapscompetenties zijn vergeleken, op basis van gegevens die verzameld zijn in het kader van het Cohortonderzoek onderwijsloopbanen (COOL5-18). Aan de hand van meerniveau-analyses is nagegaan in hoeverre er verschillen zijn tussen daltonscholen en traditionele scholen met betrekking tot deze opbrengsten. De resultaten laten zien dat er amper verschillen in opbrengsten zijn tussen daltonscholen en traditionele scholen voor wat betreft de taal-, lees- en rekenprestaties, de scores van leerlingen op de vragenlijsten over welbevinden, cognitief zelfvertrouwen en taakmotivatie en de scores van leerlingen op de vragenlijst over burgerschapscompetenties.

Bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) and peak expiratory flow (PEF) variability are associated expressions of airway lability, yet probably reflect different underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms. We investigated whether both measures can be used interchangeably to identify subjects who are susceptible to ambient air pollution, Data on BHR (greater than or equal to 20% fall in FEV1), PEF variability (ampl%mean PEF > 5% on any day during an 8-d period with low air pollution levels) and diary data on upper and lower respiratory symptoms, cough, and phlegm were collected in 189 subjects (48-73 yr). The acute effects (lag0) of particulate matter with a diameter less than 10 mu m (PM10), black smoke, SO2 and NO, on the prevalence of symptoms were estimated with logistic regression. In subjects with airway lability, both when expressed as PEF variability (69%) and BHR (28%), the prevalence of symptoms increased significantly with increasing levels of air pollution, especially in those with the greater PEF variability (n = 55, 29%). We found no such consistent positive associations in adults without airway lability. PEF variability, and to a smaller extent BHR, can be used to Identify adults who are susceptible to air pollution. Though odds ratios were rather low (ranging from 1.13 to 1.41), the impact on public health can be substantial because it applies to large populations.

Berekeningen met de Nederlandse standaardrekenmethode voor luchtkwaliteit in binnenstedelijke straten geven in 38 Amsterdamse straten gemiddeld lagere concentraties stikstofdioxide (NO2) aan dan metingen op deze locaties. Dit blijkt uit onderzoek van het RIVM en de GGD Amsterdam, waarin deze standaardrekenmethode is vergeleken met metingen van de GGD Amsterdam. Het verschil bedraagt gemiddeld 11 %. Op meetlocaties van het Landelijk Meetnet Luchtkwaliteit, verspreid over Nederland, laat de rekenmethode geen significante onderschatting zien. Het onderzoek is in opdracht van het ministerie van VROM uitgevoerd. In de onderzochte straten worden de concentraties voor een belangrijk deel bepaald door de emissies van het wegverkeer in de straat. De metingen zijn gedurende dertien meetperioden van elk vier weken, uitgevoerd met zogenoemde Palmes diffusiebuisjes. Deze metingen zijn geijkt aan de Europese referentiemethode op de vaste meetstations van het Luchtmeetnet Amsterdam. De berekeningen zijn uitgevoerd met de wegkenmerken en verkeersgegevens op de plaats van de meetpunten. Een deel van de gevonden verschillen in Amsterdam kan verklaard worden,doordat locaties buiten het toepassingsgebied van de standaardrekenmethode vallen. Behalve het lokale wegverkeer dragen andere bronnen, zoals scheepvaart, bij aan de concentraties in drukke straten in Amsterdam. De andere bronnen vormen samen de achtergrondconcentratie. Het is denkbaar dat sommige bronnen, die niet in detail in de berekening van de achtergrondconcentratie zijn opgenomen, de concentraties op specifieke locaties sterker beïnvloeden dan nu wordt aangenomen. In 2010 zal dit verder onderzocht worden.

Vegetatie (bomen en planten) kan de luchtkwaliteit in een stad niet significant verbeteren en kan die zelfs verslechteren. Door de aanwezigheid van vegetatie in of langs straten met verkeer neemt de windsnelheid in die straat namelijk af. Als gevolg hiervan gaan de concentraties van alle stoffen die door het verkeer worden uitgestoten omhoog. De aanwezigheid van vegetatie in een groot gebied kan wel de achtergrondconcentraties van stikstofdioxide en fijn stof positief beïnvloeden, maar het effect is zeer beperkt - in de orde van een half procent tot mogelijk enkele procenten bij grootschalige extra inzet van vegetatie. De onzekerheid hierover in verschillende studies is aanzienlijk. Dit blijkt uit een recente studie van het RIVM en de GGD Amsterdam naar de relatie tussen vegetatie en luchtkwaliteit, in opdracht van het ministerie van Infrastructuur en Milieu. De resultaten bevestigen de uitkomsten van het overzicht dat het RIVM in 2008 heeft gemaakt van de toen beschikbare concrete gegevens over het effect van vegetatie op luchtkwaliteit. In Nederland liepen toen nog verschillende (grootschalige) onderzoeken naar de effecten hiervan langs snelwegen en naar de combinaties van geluidsschermen met vegetatie. Het RIVM en de GGD Amsterdam hebben het bestaande overzicht uitgebreid met alle beschikbare concrete gegevens over vegetatie en luchtkwaliteit van de laatste jaren. Het onderzoek is vooral op de stoffen stikstofdioxide en fijn stof gericht vanwege hun relatief hoge concentraties ten opzichte van Europese normen voor de luchtkwaliteit. Uiteraard heeft vegetatie veel meer invloed op gezondheid en milieu dan alleen via concentratieniveaus. Verschillende studies tonen het overwegend positieve effecten van vegetatie op de gezondheid in het algemeen, deze worden in het voorliggende rapport slechts kort besproken.

A minimalist stochastic model of primary soil salinity is proposed, in which the rate of soil salinization is determined by the balance between dry and wet salt deposition and the intermittent leaching events caused by rainfall events. The long term probability density functions of salt mass and concentration are found by reducing the coupled soil moisture and salt mass balance equation to a single stochastic differential equation driven by multiplicative Poisson noise. The novel analytical solutions provide insight on the interplay of the main soil, plant and climate parameters responsible for long-term soil salinization. In particular, they show the existence of two distinct regimes, one where the mean salt mass remains nearly constant (or decreases) with increasing rainfall frequency, and another where mean salt content increases markedly with increasing rainfall frequency. As a result, relatively small reductions of rainfall in drier climates may entail dramatic shifts in long-term soil salinization trends, with significant consequences e.g. for climate change impacts on rain-fed agriculture., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

Dit rapport geeft een tussentijds overzicht van ‘state of the art’ kennis uit lopend onderzoek van het consortium ‘Climate Proof Fresh Water Supply’ (CPFWS) dat in het kader van het onderzoeksprogramma Kennis voor Klimaat wordt uitgevoerd. De focus van dit onderzoek naar een klimaatbestendige zoetwatervoorziening ligt op lokale en regionale oplossingen in Laag Nederland voor land- en tuinbouw en natuur. De zoetwatervoorziening van dit gebied wordt naast droogte vooral bedreigd door verzilting van grond- en oppervlaktewater. In zes samenhangende werkpakketten wordt geanalyseerd hoe dit gebied meer zelfvoorzienend kan worden én hoe aanpassingen in het (hoofd)watersysteem kunnen bijdragen aan de watervoorziening van het gebied. Centraal in de aanpak zijn een 3-tal casestudies in de Hotspots Haaglanden, Rotterdam Regio en Zuidwestelijke delta.

The number of ultrafine particles may be a more health relevant characteristic of ambient particulate matter than the conventionally measured mass. Epidemiological time series studies typically use a central site to characterize human exposure to outdoor air pollution. There is currently very limited information how well measurements at a central site reflect temporal and spatial variation across an urban area for particle number concentrations (PNC). The main objective of the study was to assess the spatial variation of PNC compared to the mass concentration of particles with diameter less than 10 or 2.5 μm (PM10 and PM2.5). Continuous measurements of PM10, PM2.5, PNC and soot concentrations were conducted at a central site during October 2002-March 2004 in four cities spread over Europe (Amsterdam, Athens, Birmingham and Helsinki). The same measurements were conducted directly outside 152 homes spread over the metropolitan areas. Each home was monitored during 1 week. We assessed the temporal correlation and the variability of absolute concentrations. For all particle indices, including particle number, temporal correlation of 24-h average concentrations was high. The median correlation for PNC per city ranged between 0.67 and 0.76. For PM2.5 median correlation ranged between 0.79 and 0.98. The median correlation for hourly average PNC was lower (range 0.56-0.66). Absolute concentration levels varied substantially more within cities for PNC and coarse particles than for PM2.5. Measurements at the central site reflected the temporal variation of 24-h average concentrations for all particle indices at the selected homes across the urban area. In this thesis, acute respiratory health effects of exposure to winter air pollution are investigated in panels of children (7-11 yr) and adults (50-70 yr) with and without chronic respiratory symptoms, living in urban and non-urban areas in the Netherlands. The study was performed during three consecutive winters starting in 1992/1993. Each winter, subjects performed twice daily measurements of Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) and registered the occurrence of respiratory symptoms and medication use in a diary. Air pollution concentrations were measured daily in both areas.The contrast in the concentrations of particulate air pollutants (PM 10 , Black Smoke and sulfate) between urban andnon-urban areas was small, but there was more contrast in the concentrations of the gaseous pollutants SO 2 and NO 2 .In symptomatic children from both areas, significant associations were observed between PM 10 , Black Smoke (BS) and sulfate concentrations and the prevalence of lower respiratory symptoms (LRS) and PEF decrements. Particle concentrations were also associated with bronchodilator use in the urban areas, but not in the non-urban areas. However, differences in use of maintenace medication might be responsible for this. In non-symptomatic children, significant associations were observed between PM 10 and BS concentration and the prevalence of PEF decrements, but of smaller magnitude than for symptomatic children. No associations with respiratory symptoms were observed.In symptomatic adults living in urban areas, PM 10 , BS, sulfate and SO 2 concentrations were associated with the prevalence of decrements in morning PEF, but not in evening PEF. Although especially BS was also associated with upper respiratory symptoms, particle concentrations were not associated with LRS or bronchodilator use. In symptomatic subjects living in non-urban areas, and in non-symptomatic adults from both urban and non-urban areas, no consistent associations between air pollution concentrations and indicators of respiratory health iwere found.Separate analyses in children, based on the presence/absence of objective medical characteristics showed that PM 10 was most cocnsistently associated with respiratory health indicators in symptomatic children who had either high total serum IgE level or a positive skin prick test.In conclusion, low levels of particulate air pollution were associated with adverse effects on respiratory health in 7-11 yr children, while in 50-70 year old symptomatic adults only a weak effect was found. Although there was a tendency of more consistent particle effects in the urban panels, the differences with the non-urban panels were small and might reflect differences in asthma medication use.

Exacerbations of asthma have been associated with exposure to ozone or particles with a 50% cut-off aerodynamic diameter of 10 microm (PM10). We postulated in this study that the association of summertime air pollution (i.e. ozone and PM10) with acute respiratory symptoms, medication use and peak expiratory flow differs among patients grouped according to asthma severity. During the summer of 1995, effects of ambient air pollution on these parameters were studied in a panel of 60 nonsmoking patients with intermittent to severe persistent asthma. These patients were recruited from our Pulmonary Out-patient Clinic. Subgroup analysis was performed on the degree of hyperresponsiveness and lung steroid use before the start of the study, as indictors for the severity of asthma. Associations of the parameters studied with ozone, PM10, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and black smoke were evaluated using time series analysis. Several episodes with increased summertime air pollution occurred during the 96 day study period. Eight hour average ozone concentrations exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) Air Quality Guidelines (120 microg x m(-3)) on 16 occasions. Daily mean levels of PM10 were moderately elevated (range 16-98 microg x m(-3)). Levels of the other measured pollutants were low. There was a consistent, positive association of the prevalence of shortness of breath (maximal relative risk (RRmax) 1.18) with ozone, PM10, black smoke and NO2. In addition, bronchodilator use was associated with both ozone and PM10 levels (RRmax 1.16). Stratification by airway hyperresponsiveness and steroid use did not affect the magnitude of the observed associations. No associations with peak expiratory flow measurements were found. We conclude that the severity of asthma is not an indicator for the sensitivity to air pollution

This report presents a halfway score of the research project "Winter smog and Traffic", one of the themes of the research programme "Air Pollution and Health". A state of the art is presented of the health effects associated with exposure to winter smog and of the toxicological effects caused by the inhalation of particles. A summary of the assessment of air quality and the results of epidemiological research is presented. Some policy questions are answered as far as possible at this stage of the project. Finally, an outline of a plan of activities is presented which is based on the policy needs and the most serious gaps in knowledge.
