Abstract Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) is widely used in several functional foods at present. Ginsenosides, is the most crucial bioactive constituents in ginseng whose antitumor activity have been widely reported. In this study, the effect of ginseng glucosyl oleanolate (GGO) produced from ginsenoside Ro through enzymatic transformation, on cervical cancer was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. GGO significantly inhibited the viability and colony forming ability of HeLa cells, and blocked the cell cycle in G0/G1 phase, which showed its ability to inhibit the proliferation of HeLa cells. GGO exhibited anti-angiogenesis effect in HUVECs, chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) and Matrigel plugs model. These effects were related to interference with the paracrine axis of VEGF/VEGFR2 and blockage of the downstream PI3K/AKT/HIF-1α signaling pathway of the autocrine axis. The dual inhibitory effects of GGO were also exhibited in immunocompromised mice undergoing heterograft and suppressed tumor growth without any side effects. These findings provide a theoretical basis for further development of GGO as a functional food with anti-tumor properties.

Abstract Persicaria tinctoria (2n = 40) is an important traditional medicinal plant and natural dye source within the genus Persicaria. P. tinctoria has been utilized for its antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and tumor treatment properties. Additionally, it has served as a natural blue dye for thousands of years worldwide, and continues to be used in countries such as China and Japan. Here, we assembled a tetraploid chromosome-scale genome of P. tinctoria, organized into two subgenomes: subgenome A, which contains 10 pseudochromosomes with a genome size of 888.67 Mb and a scaffold N50 of 90.56 Mb, and subgenome B, which also comprises 10 pseudochromosomes with a genome size of 771.58 Mb and a scaffold N50 of 76.84 Mb. Repeat sequences constitute 77.9% of the genome. A total of 76,742 high-confidence protein-coding genes were annotated, with 94.28% of these genes assigned functional annotations. This high-quality genome assembly of P. tinctoria will provide valuable genomic resources for studying the biosynthesis and evolution of indigoids in indigo plants, as well as for further research on the Polygonaceae family.

Objective The current study investigated the effects of mulberry 1-deoxynijirimycin (DNJ) on the digestion ability, intestinal morphology, and intestinal barrier of rabbits. Methods A total of 36 New Zealand White rabbits (male) about 45 days old (mean body weight of 1.05±0.04 kg) were reared and commercial diets were employed, and afterwards divided into three groups (n = 12) with different levels of DNJ extract additive in feed: T0 (0 g/kg), T1 (0.35 g/kg), T2 (0.7 g/kg) for 28 d. Trehalose (TRE) was used to improve the gastrointestinal tolerance of Lactobacillus plantarum embedded with whey protein concentrate/pullulan (WPC/PUL) hydrogel and the embedded L. plantarum was applied to juice. The study indicated that 5% TRE significantly increased the viable counts of L. plantarum embedded in WPC/PUL hydrogel from (8.83 ± 0.03) to (9.14 ± 0.04) (lg (CFU/g)) in simulated gastric juice (SGJ) and from (9.13 ± 0.04) to (9.38 ± 0.04) (lg (CFU/g)) in simulated intestinal juice, respectively. The addition of TRE improved the glass transition temperature of WPC/PUL hydrogel and decreased the hardness and its solubility in SGJ, which may be responsible for the improved protection of WPC/PUL hydrogels on L. plantarum. In addition, TRE increased the viable counts of L. plantarum in WPC/PUL probiotic microcapsule juice at low pH and high temperature during storage.

Abstract As a new type of composite two-dimensional material formed by the combination of Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) and two- dimensional (2D) MXenes, COF/MXene heterostructures (COF@MXene) inherit the stable porous two-dimensional structure of COFs and the excellent electrochemical performance and catalytic activity of MXenes, thus attracting widespread attention. Additionally, COF@MXene possesses various elemental affinity sites, efficient ion channels, and the ability to append various functional groups, which endow them with tremendous potential in electrochemical energy storage, energy conversion, and catalysis. Currently, there is a lack of extensive literature discussing the utilization of COF@MXene. The quest for enhanced physicochemical attributes through tailored modifications and composite strategies for COF@MXene is still a noteworthy hurdle. Furthermore, discovering novel application contexts that can harness the exceptional capabilities of these materials presents a formidable task. This review initiates with an exploration of the primary methodologies for synthesizing COF and MXene composites. Subsequently, it outlines the diverse applications of COF and MXene in energy storage, energy conversion, and environmental conservation. Lastly, it discusses the primary obstacles and future trajectories within these domains.

Abstract Background Most patients with osteoporosis experience vertebral compression fracture (VCF), which significantly reduces their quality of life. These patients are at a high risk of secondary VCF regardless of treatment. Thus, accurate diagnosis of VCF is important for treating and preventing new fractures. We aimed to investigate the diagnostic and predictive value of quantitative bone imaging techniques for fresh VCF. Methods From November 2021 to March 2023, 34 patients with VCF were enrolled in this study, all of whom underwent routine 99mTc-MDP whole-body bone planar scan and local SPECT/CT imaging. The maximum standard uptake value (SUVmax) of 57 fresh VCF, 57 normal adjacent vertebrae, and 19 old VCF were measured. Based on the site of the fracture, fresh VCFs were regrouped into the intervertebral-type group and the margin-type group. Meanwhile, 52 patients who had no bone metastasis or VCFs in their bone scan were assigned to the control group. The SUVmax of 110 normal vertebral bodies and 10 old VCFs in the control group were measured. Results The median SUVmax of fresh VCF was 19.80, which was significantly higher than the SUVmax of other groups. The receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve showed that the cut-off value of SUVmax was 9.925 for diagnosing fresh VCF. The SUVmax in the intervertebral-type group was significantly higher than that in the margin-type group (P = 0.04). With the rapid advancement and wide application of microwave technology, it enhances convenience while potentially endangering health. The immune system, as a vital shield, is an important protective barrier and also one of the sensitive targets of microwave radiation. The immune system is particularly affected by microwave radiation via innate and adaptive immune responses, which is supported by both population surveys and experimental studies; however, the precise mechanism of immunotoxicity of microwave radiation remains under investigation. In light of recent scientific advances in the correlation between microwave radiation and the immune system, the deleterious impact of microwave radiation on innate immunity was delineated. Microwave radiation can induce irregular innate immune function by damaging macrophages, neutrophils, natural killer cells, and dendritic cells. The effects of microwave radiation on adaptive immunity were also elucidated. Microwave radiation can impair cellular immune response by influencing T cell proliferation, maturation and activation, and distribution of T cell subpopulation, and also hinder humoral immune function by influencing B lymphocyte protein expression, maturation during development, and number of B cells. Disparity in the immune function of the body can precipitate the onset of various immune-associated diseases, so the immunotoxic effects of microwave radiation and associated protection need considerable attention and detailed investigation. This article reviewed the shortcomings of existing studies, and suggested that future experimental studies should use experimental parameters that are more similar to the actual scene of life and work, pay more attention to the biological effects of combined multi-frequency microwave exposure on the immune system, use standardized and unified experimental methods, and incorporate more sophisticated experimental technologies to further elucidate the laws of damage effect and exact mechanism of microwave radiation on the immune system, so as to provide a scientific basis for potent protection against the damage effect of microwave radiation on the immune system.

The hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis is an important neuroendocrine regulatory center involved in egg-laying process in poultry. However, its mechanism of regulating broodiness behavior and laying performance in geese remains unclear. This study explored the molecular mechanism by which the HPG axis regulates brooding behavior in Wanxi white geese (WWG). The hypothalamus, pituitary, and ovarian tissues of Wanxi white geese were collected at laying and brooding periods for transcriptome sequencing analysis. A total of 240 (BH vs. LH), 319 (BP vs. LP), and 445 (BO vs. LO) differentially expressed genes, and 56 (BH vs. LH), 82 (BP vs. LP), and 48 (BO vs. LO) differentially expressed miRNAs were identified. Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) functional enrichment analysis showed that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) were significantly enriched in hormone level regulation, cell communication, calcium signaling pathway, GnRH signaling pathway, MAPK signaling pathway, Wnt signaling pathway, and other processes. Six DEGs and four DEMs were randomly selected for real-time fluorescence quantitative reverse transcription PCR (RT-qPCR). The results showed that the transcriptome sequencing data were accurate and reliable. In addition, 22 potential hub miRNAs were screened. Dual luciferase reporter assays confirmed the targeting relationship between miR-144-y and DIO3. The results showed that the miRNAs mainly regulated the laying performance and brooding behavior of WWG by mediating the expression of target genes. In this study, we systematically elucidated the mechanisms by which the HPG axis regulates the broodiness behavior and laying performance of WWG at the post-transcriptional level. Several miRNAs and mRNAs associated with the reproductive performance of WWG were identified, providing a crucial reference for the subsequent use of gene editing technologies to breed new varieties and advance the development of WWG breeding industry.

Abstract An immature understanding of the mechanisms of persistent luminescence (PersL) has hindered the development of new persistent luminescent materials (PersLMs) with increased brightness. In this regard, in-situ direct current (DC) electric field measurements were conducted on a layered structure composed of the SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ phosphor, and an electrode. In this study, the photoluminescence (PL) and afterglow properties were investigated with respect to voltage by analyzing the current signal and thermoluminescence (TL) spectroscopy. The intensity of PersL increased due to a novel phenomenon known as “external electric field stimulated enhancement of initial brightness of afterglow”. This dynamic process was illustrated via the use of a rate equation approach, where the electrons trapped by the ultra-shallow trap at 0.022 eV could be transferred through the conduction band during long afterglow. The afterglow intensity could reach 0.538 cd m−2 at a 6 V electric voltage. The design of an electric field stimulation technique enables the enhancement of the intensity of PersLMs and provides a new perspective for exploring the fundamental mechanics of certain established PersLMs.

Abstract Adenosma buchneroides Bonati, also known as fleagrass, is an important medicinal plant used by the Akha (Hani) people of China for treating inflammation-related skin swelling, acne, and diarrhoea, among other conditions. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activities and explore the molecular mechanisms of fleagrass on treating skin swelling and acne. The results demonstrated that fleagrass inhibited the enzymatic activities of 5-LOX and COX-2 in vitro, and decreased the release of NO, IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-10 in the LPS-induced RAW264.7 macrophages. The levels of proteins associated with the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway were examined by western blotting and immunofluorescence, demonstrating that fleagrass downregulated the expression of TLR4, MyD88, NF-κB/p65, and iNOS and blocked the nuclear translocation of NF-κB/p65. Furthermore, fleagrass exhibited acute anti-inflammatory activity in paw oedema models. The results confirm that fleagrass exhibits remarkable anti-inflammatory activity and can be used in alleviating inflammation, suggesting that fleagrass has the potential to be a novel anti-inflammatory agent. Graphene-doped CuO (rGO-CuO) nanocomposites with flower shapes were prepared by an improved solvothermal method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV–visible spectroscopy. The active species in the degradation reaction of rGO-CuO composites under ultrasonic irradiation were detected by electron paramagnetic resonance. On the basis of comparative experiments, the photodegradation mechanisms of two typical dyes, Rhodamine B (Rh B) and methyl orange (MO), were proposed. The results demonstrated that the doped CuO could improve the degradation efficiency. The catalytic degradation efficiency of rGO-CuO (2:1) to rhodamine B (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) reached 90 ​% and 87 ​% respectively, which were 2.1 times and 4.4 times of the reduced graphene oxide. Through the first-principles and other theories, we give the reasons for the enhanced catalytic performance of rGO-CuO: combined with internal and external factors, rGO-CuO under ultrasound could produce more hole and active sites that could interact with the OH· in pollutant molecules to achieve degradation. The rGO-CuO nanocomposite has a simple preparation process and low price, and has a high efficiency of degrading water pollution products and no secondary pollution products. It has a low-cost and high-efficiency application prospect in water pollution industrial production and life.

Highlights With its layered structure, abundant functional groups, and excellent electrical conductivity, MXene is of great research interest in the field of gas sensing. The preparation technology of gas sensors is constantly being optimized, opening up avenues for the development of gas sensing. MXene-based composite materials (MXene/graphene, MXene/metal oxides, MXene/MOF, and MXene/polymer) are applied in various gas sensors.

Objective: To compare the quantitative parameters of lung HRCT and clinical manifestations of anti-melanoma differentiation-associated gene 5 (MDA5) antibody-positive idiopathic inflammatory myopathy (IIM) patients with different prognoses. Methods: The clinical and imaging data of 19 MDA5 antibody-positive IIM patients admitted to Beijing Shijitan Hospital Affiliated with Capital Medical University between February 2017 and November 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. According to the prognoses, the patients were divided into the good prognoses group (14 cases) and the poor prognoses (intubation or death) group (5 cases). The clinical and laboratory indexes, types of interstitial lung disease (ILD), and CT quantitative indexes were compared between the two groups. Results: There were significant differences in gender; carcinoembryonic antigen; blood oxygen saturation; and the percentages of lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, and neutrophils between the good versus the poor prognoses groups. The proportion of abnormal respiratory system changes was higher in the poor prognoses group. In terms of the type of ILD, acute interstitial pneumonia (AIP)-like lesions were the main type in the poor prognoses group, and nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (AIP) lesions were the main type in the good prognoses group. For NSIP-like lesions, there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups. The semi-quantitative score of the poor prognoses group was higher, and the volume of whole lung lesions as well as the proportion of whole lung lesions were also higher. Spearman correlation analysis showed that the blood oxygen saturation, monocyte percentage, semi-quantitative score, whole lung lesion volume, and proportion of whole lung lesion were negatively correlated, while carcinoembryonic antigen, neutrophil percentage, and neutrophils were positively correlated with the semi-quantitative score, whole lung lesion volume, and proportion of whole lung lesion. Conclusions: The lung HRCT quantitative indicators, clinical manifestations, and laboratory indicators are different in MDA5 antibody-positive IIM patients with different prognoses. Early evaluation of HRCT imaging manifestations, clinical manifestations, and laboratory indicators is of great significance in determining the prognosis of MDA5 antibody-positive IIM patients, which provides corresponding support for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

It is well established that patients with the most differentiated thyroid cancers have a good prognosis, whereas when the disease develops into radio-iodine refractory thyroid cancer (RAIR) their prognosis is poor and the 10-year survival rate is low. At present, the therapeutic methods for RAIR are limited and have low efficacy. As a consequence, several models have been developed for predicting RAIR. The aim of this review was to describe recent developments regarding the factors that influence and predict the occurrence of RAIR. Many variables including demographic characteristics, tumor clinicopathology, serology changes, disease characteristics, and PET/CT results have been shown to be independent factors that influence the development of RAIR. The cut-off value derived from multivariate prediction models therefore effectively predicts the onset of RAIR. However, the current models for predicting RAIR were obtained through retrospective studies, and the prospective prediction studies are needed in the future to confirm their validity.

PurposeParotid gland metastases originating from breast origin are extremely rare, with their clinical presentation, therapeutic approaches, and prognostic indicators remaining to be elucidate.MethodsA comprehensive retrospective review was conducted, analyzing the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of 57 patients diagnosed with parotid metastasis of breast cancer in the existing literature. Notably, our study included two unique cases of patients who developed contralateral and ipsilateral parotid metastases, occurring 5 years and 32 years respectively after primary surgery. This analysis aimed to provide a deeper understanding of the disease presentation and identify potential prognostic indicators.ResultsThe primary clinical manifestation presented in breast cancer patients with parotid metastases was painless masses in the parotid glands, synchronously or metachronously occurred with primary breast tumors. The predominant pathological subtype among these patients was invasive ductal carcinoma. Out of the 57 patients studied, 24 (42.1%) exhibited metastases solely in the ipsilateral parotid gland, while 18 cases (31.6%) involved either the contralateral or bilateral parotid gland. Patients may solely exhibit metastasis in the parotid gland, or they may present with concurrent multiple metastases in other organs. Patients who suffered from parotid metastases, either merely or accompanied with bone-only metastasis, exhibited significantly longer overall survival (OS) rates compared to those who had concomitant metastases in other organs (1.23 ± 0.26 years vs 4.46 ± 0.77 years, P=0.046). While no statistically significant differences in OS were observed among patients presenting with metastases in the ipsilateral, contralateral, or bilateral parotid glands, a notable variance could be discerned from the Kaplan-Meier curve analysis. Additionally, no significant difference in survival was exhibited between patients with different interval of progression from primary breast sites to initial diagnosis of parotid metastases (uDF), nor for patients who were treated with surgery or palliative therapy.ConclusionParotid metastasis, a rare and distinctive form of breast cancer metastasis, demands particular scrutiny in patients exhibiting metastasis to multiple organs or contralateral or bilateral parotid glands.

Dahongpao mother tree (Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Ktze) is a representative of Wuyi rock tea. Whether there is a difference in rhizosphere soil microbial diversity and function between asexually propagated cuttings of Dahongpao (PD) and the parent Dahongpao mother tree (MD) has not been reported. In this study, high throughput sequencing technology was used to analyze rhizosphere soil microbial diversity, functions and their relationship with soil available nutrients and enzyme activities in MD and PD. The results showed that available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium contents and urease, protease, acid phosphatase and sucrase activities of rhizosphere soils in MD were significantly higher than those in PD. Both bacterial and fungal diversity were higher in rhizosphere soils in MD than in PD, and secondly, the bacterial community structure was less stable while the fungal community structure was more stable in PD compared to MD. There were significant differences between MD and PD tea tree rhizosphere soils in 6 genera of characteristic bacteria and 4 genera of characteristic fungi. The results of function and interaction effect analysis showed that the rhizosphere soil available nutrient content and enzyme activities in MD were significantly higher than those in PD, and their contributions mainly originated from Pirellula and Acidisphaera of characteristic bacteria and Alatospora of characteristic fungi. Secondly, MD maybe had a stronger ability to inhibit soil pathogens than PD, with the main contribution coming from Scopulariopsis and Tolypocladium of characteristic fungi. Overall, compared with PD, soil texture in MD was relatively better, and its soil nutrient cycling-related enzyme activities were stronger, which was more favorable to soil nutrient cycling and increased the available nutrient content of the soil, which in turn promoted the growth of tea trees. This study provides an important reference for the planting and management of tea tree cuttings and microbial regulation of tea tree growth.

BackgroundReactivate the T cell immunity by PD-1/PD-L1 checkpoint blockade is widely used in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, while the post-translational modification of Programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) is commonly existed in various cancer cells, thus increases the complexity and difficulty in therapy development. Ginsenoside Rg3 is an active component of traditional Chinese herb Ginseng with multiple pharmacological effects including immune regulation. However, the effect on the glycosylation of PD-L1 is unknown.MethodsNSCLC cell lines were tested for glycosylation of PD-L1, and the potential mechanisms were investigated. Tumor cell-T cell coculture experiment was conducted and the activation of T cells and cytotoxicity were measured by flow cytometry. In vivo xenograft mouse tumor model was used to investigate the effects of Rg3 on PD-L1-mediated immunosuppression and tumor growth.ResultsHere, we identified PD-L1 is widely N-linked glycosylated in NSCLC cell lines, while Rg3 could inhibit the glycosylation of PD-L1 by downregulating the EGFR signaling and further activate GSK3b-mediated degradation, thus resulted in reduced PD-L1 expression. Moreover, the inhibition of PD-L1 glycosylation promoted the activation and cytotoxicity of T cells under coculture condition. In addition, Rg3 could decrease the tumor volume and enhance anti-tumor T cell immunity as evidence by the upregulated expression of Granzyme B and perforin in CD8+T cells, along with elevated serum IL-2, IFN-g and TNF-a level in Rg3-treated mice.ConclusionsThese results suggest that Rg3 inhibits PD-L1 glycosylation and thus enhance anti-tumor immunity, which provide new therapeutic insight into drug discovery.

Abstract Immune disorders have become one of the public health problems and imposes a serious economic and social burden worldwide. Ginsenosides, the main active constituents of ginseng, are regarded as a novel supplementary strategy for preventing and improving immune disorders and related diseases. This review summarized the recent research progress of ginsenosides in immunomodulation and proposed future directions to promote the development and application of ginsenosides. After critically reviewing the immunomodulatory potential of ginsenosides both in vitro and in vivo and even in clinical data of humans, we provided a perspective that ginsenosides regulated the immune system through activation of immune cells, cytokines, and signaling pathways such as MAPK, PI3K/Akt, STAT, and AMPK, as well as positively affected immune organs, gut flora structure, and systemic inflammatory responses. However, the evidence for the safety and efficacy of ginsenosides is insufficient, and the immune pathways of ginsenosides remain incompletely characterized. We believe that this review will provide a valuable reference for further research on ginsenosides as dietary supplements with immunomodulatory effects.

Abstract Background Treating white spot lesions (WSLs) with resin infiltration alone may not be sufficient, raising questions about its compatibility with other treatments amid controversial or incomplete data. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the aesthetic feasibility of resin infiltration combined with bleaching, as well as its potential mechanical effect on ceramic bonding to WSLs. Methods One hundred and fifty flat enamel surfaces of bovine incisors were prepared. Ninety specimens were deminerailized and randomly assigned to three groups(n = 30): post-bleaching resin infiltration (Bl-R), pre-bleaching resin infiltration (R-Bl), and only resin infiltration (R). Color, surface roughness and microhardness were assessed in immediate, thermocycling and pigmentation tests. The remaining sixty samples were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 20): control (Ctrl), bonding (Bo), pre-bonding resin infiltration (R-Bo). Shear bonding strength, failure mode, micro-leakage depth and interface morphology were evaluated after ceramic bonding. The Tukey test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used for statistical analysis. Results For the effect of resin infiltration and bleaching on WSLs, the R-Bl group showed the worst chromic masking ability, with the highest |ΔL|, |Δa|, |Δb|, and ΔE values after treatment. Compared with those in the Bl-R group, the R-Bl and R groups showed significant time-dependent staining, which is possibly attributed to their surface roughness. Abstract Tea plant [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze] is one of the important foliar cash crops in China, and its root system absorbs heavy metal (HM) elements enriched in the soil and transports them to the over ground part. In order to ensure the safety of the soil ecological environment and tea raw materials in the tea production area, the HM contents of soil and tea plant leaves in Suzhou tea plantations were detected, the relationship between HMs and soil physicochemical properties was analyzed, and the ecological risk of HMs in tea plantation soils was evaluated by using relevant detection techniques and evaluation models. The results showed that the average pH of tea plantation soils around Tai Lake in Suzhou was within the range suitable for the growth of tea plants. The pH, soil organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus and available potassium of tea plantation soil satisfying the requirements of high quality, high efficiency and high yield (‘3H’) tea plantation accounted for 47.06%, 26.47%, 8.82%, 79.41% and 67.65%, respectively. Site 2 fully met the requirements of ‘3H’ tea plantation. In addition, the contents of cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) were extremely variable, and the average contents exceeded the background value of soil in Jiangsu Province, but the HM contents of tea leaves all met the pollution-free standard, and the HM contents of tea leaves around Tai Lake in Suzhou were generally at a safe level. The composite ecological risk index ranged from 0.05 to 0.60, and 32 of the 34 sample sites (except site 21 and site 23) are the most suitable agricultural land for tea plantations.

Speech emotion recognition (SER) is important in facilitating natural human–computer interactions. In speech sequence modeling, a vital challenge is to learn context-aware sentence expression and temporal dynamics of paralinguistic features to achieve unambiguous emotional semantic understanding. In previous studies, the SER method based on the single-scale cascade feature extraction module could not effectively preserve the temporal structure of speech signals in the deep layer, downgrading the sequence modeling performance. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a novel multi-scale feature pyramid network. The enhanced multi-scale convolutional neural networks (MSCNNs) significantly improve the ability to extract multi-granular emotional features. Experimental results on the IEMOCAP corpus demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, achieving a weighted accuracy (WA) of 71.79% and an unweighted accuracy (UA) of 73.39%. Furthermore, on the RAVDESS dataset, the model achieves an unweighted accuracy (UA) of 86.5%. These results validate the system’s performance and highlight its competitive advantage.

Ovarian development significantly influences the laying performance of geese. In this study, the transcriptome analysis was conducted on the ovarian tissues of Wanxi White Geese during the pre-laying (KL), laying (CL), and ceased-laying period (XL). Short Time-series Expression Miner (STEM) analysis and miRNA–mRNA regulatory network construction were performed to identify the key genes and miRNAs regulating laying traits. Comparative analysis of KL vs. CL, CL vs. XL, and XL vs. KL groups resulted in the identification of 337, 136, and 525 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), and 258, 1131, and 909 differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs), respectively. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis (p < 0.05) revealed that the main enrichment pathways of DEGs and DEMs at different breeding periods were Neuroactive ligand–receptor interaction, GnRH signaling pathway and Wnt signaling pathway, all associated with ovarian development. According to the three groups of common pathways, four DEGs were screened out, including INHBB, BMP5, PRL, and CGA, along with five DEMs, including let-7-x, miR-124-y, miR-1-y, and miR-10926-z, all of them may affect ovarian development. A miRNA–mRNA regulatory network was constructed through integrated analysis of DEGs and DEMs, revealing nine miRNAs highly associated with ovarian development: miR-101-y, let-7-x, miR-1-x, miR-17-y, miR-103-z, miR-204-x, miR-101-x, miR-301-y, and miR-151-x. The dual-luciferase reporter gene verified the target relationship between WIF1 and miR-204-x, suggesting that these miRNAs may influence ovarian development in Wanxi White Goose by regulating the expression levels of their target genes within ovarian tissue. This study provides a theoretical foundation for analyzing the mechanisms of ovarian development across different breeding periods and accelerating the cultivation of new breeds through post-transcriptional regulation levels.

The poultry industry struggles with oxidative stress affecting gut health and productivity. This study examined using 1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) extracts from mulberry leaves as an antioxidant in broilers feed to combat this issue. We divided 240 broilers, aged 16 days, into six groups, including a control and groups exposed to oxidative stress through H2O2 injections, with different supplement levels of DNJ-E (40, 80, 120, and 160 mg/kg of the basal diet) lasting until the broilers reached 42 days old. We evaluated intestinal morphology, ultrastructure, oxidative stress markers, the tight junction, and inflammatory cytokines. Adding 40 mg/kg DNJ-E improved villus height, the villus-to-crypt ratio, and cellular ultrastructure, and increased SOD levels in the jejunum and ileum, as well as CAT levels in the duodenum and jejunum (p < 0.05), compared to the H2O2 group. The addition of DNJ had differential effects on oxidative stress, the intestinal barrier, and immune-related genes. Importantly, the dosages of 40 mg/kg and 80 mg/kg resulted in an upregulation of MUC2 mRNA expression (p < 0.05). These findings suggest that DNJ-E holds potential as a beneficial feed additive for enhancing broiler health, particularly at supplementation levels below 80 mg/kg, as higher concentrations may negatively influence intestinal health. Future investigations should aim to elucidate the underlying mechanisms through which DNJ-E operates within the avian gastrointestinal system.

The ASI algorithm uses the same sea ice and seawater tie-points when inverting polar sea ice concentration (SIC), but this approach does not fully consider the differences between different polar sea regions and the impact of different sea ice characteristics on SIC results. To make up for this deficiency, the SIC inversion algorithm based on different types of Arctic sea ice is proposed. The proposed algorithm selects pure ice and pure water sample points in different sea regions to derive SIC inversion formulas, and subsequently obtains SIC retrieval results for the entire Arctic. Compare the results of this study with those of traditional ASI algorithm, and perform local validation based on the sea ice distribution obtained from Landsat-8 data. The results show that compared with the traditional ASI algorithm, the proposed algorithm has improved the accuracy of SIC inversion in different sea ice regions by 2%-6%, with an average improvement of 3.3%. Overall, our research has improved the ASI algorithm, which is of great significance for obtaining higher precision polar SIC.

Aerospace breeding is a breeding technique that utilizes a spacecraft to position plants in a space environment for mutagenesis, which is conducive to rapid mutagenesis for the screening of superior plant varieties. In this study, tea trees with aviation mutagenesis (TM) and those without aviation mutagenesis (CK) were selected as research subjects to analyze the effects of aviation mutagenesis on the growth, physiological properties, and hormone metabolism of tea trees, and to further screen the characteristic hormones and validate their functions. The results showed that the leaf length, leaf width, and leaf area of TM tea trees were significantly larger than those of CK. The growth indexes, the photosynthetic physiological indexes (i.e., chlorophyll content, intercellular CO2 concentration, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and photosynthetic rate), and the resistance physiological indexes (i.e., superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and soluble sugar) were significantly higher in TM than in CK. Hormone metabolome analysis showed that four characteristic hormones distinguished CK from TM, namely, l-tryptophan, indole, salicylic acid, and salicylic acid 2-O-β-glucoside, all of which were significantly more abundant in TM than in CK. These four characteristic hormones were significantly and positively correlated with the growth indexes, tea yield, and the photosynthetic and resistance physiological indexes of tea trees. The leaf area, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate, and superoxide dismutase activity of tea tree seedlings after spraying with the four characteristic hormones were significantly increased, in which salicylic acid and salicylic acid 2-O-β-glucoside were more favorable to increase the leaf area and superoxide dismutase activity, while l-tryptophan and indole were more favorable to increase the leaf chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate. It can be observed that aviation mutagenesis improves the accumulation of the characteristic hormones of tea trees, enhances their photosynthetic capacity, improves their resistance, promotes their growth, and then improves the tea yield.

Background: The predictive value of the methylation of Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) metastasis-associated lung adenocarcinoma transcript 1 (MALAT1) and H19 promoters in peripheral blood leukocytes as a non-invasive biomarker for the chemotherapy effect and prognosis gastric cancer (GC) is unclear. Methods: The DNA methylation of H19 and MALAT1 between chemotherapy-sensitive and non-sensitive groups and between groups with better and worse survival of GC was compared using regression analyses. Several predictive nomograms were constructed. The genetic alteration of MALAT1 and H19 and the association between gene expression and immune status in GC were also investigated using bioinformatics analysis. Results: Higher genetic methylations in peripheral blood were noticed in GC groups with poorer survival. The constructed nomograms presented strong predictive values for the chemotherapy effect and 3-year survival of disease-free survival, progression-free survival, and overall survival, with the area under the curve as 0.838, 0.838, 0.912, and 0.925, respectively. Significant correlations between MALAT1 or H19 expression and marker genes of immune checkpoints and immune pathways were noticed. The high infiltration of macrophages in H19-high and low infiltration of CD8+ T cells in MALAT1-high groups were associated with worse survival of GC. Conclusions: MALAT1 and H19 have the potential to predict the chemotherapy response and clinical outcomes of GC.

Fluoride (F) can be absorbed from the environment and hyperaccumulate in leaves of Camellia sinensis without exhibiting any toxic symptoms. Fluoride exporter in C. sinensis (CsFEX) could transport F to extracellular environment to alleviate F accumulation and F toxicity, but its functional mechanism remains unclear. Here, combining with pH condition of C. sinensis growth, the characteristics of CsFEX and mechanism of F detoxification were further explored. The results showed that F accumulation was influenced by various pH, and pH 4.5 and 6.5 had a greater impact on the F accumulation of C. sinensis. Through Non-invasive Micro-test Technology (NMT) detection, it was found that F uptake/accumulation of C. sinensis and Arabidopsis thaliana might be affected by pH through changing the transmembrane electrochemical proton gradient of roots. Furthermore, diverse expression patterns of CsFEX were induced by F treatment under different pH, which was basically up-regulated in response to high F accumulation, indicating that CsFEX was likely to participate in the process of F accumulation in C. sinensis and this process might be regulated by pH. Additionally, CsFEX functioned in the mitigation of F sensitivity and accumulation strengthened by lower pH in Escherichia coli and A. thaliana. Moreover, the changes of H+ flux and potential gradient caused by F were relieved as well in transgenic lines, also suggesting that CsFEX might play an important role in the process of F accumulation. Above all, F uptake/accumulation were alleviated in E. coli and A. thaliana by CsFEX through exporting F-, especially at lower pH, implying that CsFEX might regulate F accumulation in C. sinensis.

In order to study the frost resistance of alkali activated concrete (AAC), 15 AAC cube specimens and 15 cylindrical specimens were designed and manufactured. The frost thawing cycle test and mechanical performance test were used to study the frost resistance of AAC. The results showed that after freeze–thaw cycles, small pores appeared on the surface of the specimen, and the surface roughness increased, resulting in a darker appearance. As the number of freeze–thaw cycles increases, the highest mass loss rate of AAC reaches 1.88%. The cube compressive strength and axial compressive strength of AAC first increase and then decrease, while the elastic modulus gradually decreases. After 50 freeze–thaw cycles, the compressive strength of the specimen was greater than that of the normal temperature specimen. When the freeze–thaw cycles reached 200, the elastic modulus of the specimen degraded by 9.7%, the compressive strength decreased by 18.6%, and the axial compressive strength decreased by 31.2%. Based on the experimental results, a method for calculating the residual strength of AAC after freeze–thaw cycles and key parameters of the freeze–thaw damage constitutive equation were proposed.

Abstract Background The diagnostic accuracy of [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose ([18F]-FDG) positron emission tomography imaging in accurately identifying thyroid lesions is limited, primarily due to the physiological uptake of normal head and neck tissues and inflammatory uptake in lymph nodes. Since fibroblast activating protein is highly expressed in tumors and largely unexpressed in normal tissues, quinoline-based fibroblast activating protein inhibitors (FAPI) have emerged as promising tools in the diagnosis of cancer and other medical conditions. Several studies have reported on the feasibility and value of FAPI in thyroid cancer. Main body In this narrative review, we summarize the current literature on state-of-the-art FAPI positron emission tomography imaging for thyroid cancer and fibroblast activating protein-targeted radionuclide therapy. We provide an overview of FAPI uptake in normal thyroid tissue, thyroid cancer and its metastases. Additionally, we highlight the difference between FAPI uptake and [18F]-FDG uptake in thyroid lesions. Furthermore, we discuss the therapeutic value of FAPI in iodine-refractory thyroid cancer. Conclusion The utilization of fibroblast activating protein inhibitors in thyroid cancer holds significant promise, offering clinicians valuable insights for more precise diagnose choices and treatments strategies in the future.

Medium-Entropy Alloy (MEA) is a new metal material with high strength, high hardness, high corrosion resistance and excellent high temperature properties. With its excellent performance makes it promising for a wide range of applications in the fields of aerospace, automotive, energy and biomedicine. In addition, the continuous breakthroughs in preparation process have promoted the development of MEA with unique appeal. So far, outstanding results have been achieved in the preparation technology of MEA, and the scientific field of improving the performance of MEA by adjusting the process technology has received much attention. No work has been reported specifically on MEA preparation methods and enhancement mechanisms, and a review is needed to summarize the current state of research in this area. In this paper, we review the research progress of MEA in both preparation process and strengthening mechanism, and introduce in detail the arc melting, induction melting and mechanical alloying and deposition methods with CoCrNi as the main focus, and analyze the advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the prospects and challenges for the development of optimally designed MEA are presented.

Ticks are parasitic organisms that can transmit a wide range of pathogenic microorganisms. They are the second most common vectors of diseases affecting humans and animals. The occurrence and transmission of tick-borne diseases has recently shown increasing or fluctuating trends. DNA was extracted after the collection of tick samples. A library targeting the V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene was constructed. After quality control, next-generation sequencing was performed with the Illumina NextSeq platform to analyze microbial diversity within the ticks. Samples were gathered between May 2023 and July 2023. A total of 77 ticks from five distinct regions were selected for next-generation sequencing. Molecular identification confirmed that all sequenced samples belonged to Haemaphysalis longicornis . The most abundant bacteria belonged to the phylum Proteobacteria , which was present in all samples. Variations in sample richness and evenness were observed among sampling sites (Shannon index, P = 0.019). The bacterial diversity in LT exhibited the highest value, with an average of 2.449. Rickettsia and Coxiella were the predominant bacterial species, both of which are classified as tick-borne pathogens. The linear discriminant analysis effect size revealed significant differences in microbial composition among groups, except for the PC and LY groups, and identified distinct biomarkers for each group. Our findings indicated the high relative abundance of both pathogenic bacteria and non-pathogenic endosymbionts in H. longicornis and the potential for pathogen transmission to residents. However, further validation through human case studies is necessary. Health care providers should be aware of the possibility of the occurrence of these diseases.

The features of the unconformity, fault and tectonic inversion in the eastern Doseo Basin, Chad, were analyzed, and the genetic mechanisms and basin evolution were discussed using seismic and drilling data. The following results are obtained. First, four stratigraphic unconformities, i.e. basement (Tg), Mangara Group (T10), lower Upper Cretaceous (T5) and Cretaceous (T4), four faulting stages, i.e. Barremian extensional faults, Aptian–Coniacian strike-slip faults, Campanian strike-slip faults, and Eocene strike-slip faults, and two tectonic inversions, i.e. Santonian and end of Cretaceous, were developed in the Doseo Basin. Second, the Doseo Basin was an early failed intracontinental passive rift basin transformed by the strike-slip movement and tectonic inversion. The initial rifting between the African and South American plates induced the nearly N-S stretching of the Doseo Basin, giving rise to the formation of the embryonic Doseo rift basin. The nearly E-W strike-slip movement of Borogop (F1) in the western section of the Central African Shear Zone resulted in the gradual cease of the near north-south rifting and long-term strike-slip transformation, forming a dextral transtension fault system with inherited activity but gradually weakened in intensity (interrupted by two tectonic inversions). This fault system was composed of the main shear (F1), R-type shear (F2-F3) and P-type shear (F4-F5) faults, with the strike-slip associated faults as branches. The strike-slip movements of F1 in Cretaceous and Eocene were controlled by the dextral shear opening of the equatorial south Atlantic and rapid expanding of the Indian Ocean, respectively. The combined function of the strike-slip movement of F1 and the convergence between Africa and Eurasia made the Doseo Basin underwent the Santonian dextral transpressional inversion characterized by intensive folding deformation leading to the echelon NE-SW and NNE-SSW nose-shaped uplifts and unconformity (T5) on high parts of the uplifts. The convergence between Africa and Eurasia caused the intensive tectonic inversion of Doseo Basin at the end of Cretaceous manifesting as intensive uplift, denudation and folding deformation, forming the regional unconformity (T4) and superposing a nearly E-W structural configuration on the Santonian structures. Third, the Doseo Basin experienced four evolutional stages with the features of short rifting and long depression, i.e. Barremian rifting, Aptian rifting–depression transition, Albian–Late Cretaceous depression, and Cenozoic extinction, under the control of the tectonic movements between Africa and its peripheral plates.

Abstract Background Wild edible plants (WEPs) play a crucial role in communities with limited communication with the outside world, where unstable factors, such as poor food supply and insufficient access to timely nutritional supplementation, are common, as in the Himalayan region. To document the traditional knowledge of WEPs and explore their significance for communities with minimal global economic exchange, an ethnobotanical study was conducted in the town of Rongjia, which lies in a narrow valley near Mount Everest, Tibet, China. Methods This ethnobotanical study was conducted in three villages in the Rongjia River Valley between August 2021 and June 2023. Semi-structured interviews and participatory observations were used to collect information on WEPs. The fieldwork was performed with the assistance of local guides. Voucher specimens were collected from each documented plant species for taxonomic identification. We used the use report (UR) and relative frequency of citations (RFC) to evaluate the comprehensive utilization value of WEPs. Results We interviewed 161 informants who provided us with 2499 use reports. We collected 50 WEPs belonging to 28 families and 42 genera used by the Tibetan people in the Rongjia River Valley. WEPs are used in vegetables, fruits, seasonings, healthcare foods, substitute grains, and beverages. Wild vegetables were the most commonly used, followed by wild fruits. Leaves were the most commonly consumed part of the plant. The three most important WEPs ordered by RFC values were Rosa sericea var. glandulosa Osmaston (RFC = 0.76), Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. (RFC = 0.75), and Urtica hyperborea Jacquem. ex Wedd. (RFC = 0.71). Other than that, we also document some of WEPs used in the past. Arisaema erubescens Schott, Pinellia ternata (Thunb.) Makino, and Satyrium nepalense var. ciliatum (Lindl.) Hook. f. used to serve as important substitute grains, are no longer in use, however, they remain vivid in the memories of older people. Conclusions WEPs included wild vegetables, fruits, seasonings, healthcare food, and substitute grains for Tibetan people in the Rongjia River Valley. Some WEPs have become important cultural symbols for older people, which can help in understanding the relationship between plants and local people in the past. In addition, WEPs can increase the resilience of local people living in remote areas when facing sudden destabilizing events in future. This is the significance of WEPs for communities with minimal global economic exchange. Therefore, we suggest that future studies focus more on WEPs in communities with limited communication with the world to improve their resilience.

Abstract Neuronal iron overload contributes to synaptic damage and neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying iron deposition in depression remain largely unexplored. Our study aims to investigate how nuclear factor-erythroid 2 (NF-E2)-related factor 2 (Nrf2) ameliorates hippocampal synaptic dysfunction and reduces brain functional connectivity (FC) associated with excessive iron in depression. We treated mice with chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) with the iron chelator deferoxamine mesylate (DFOM) and a high-iron diet (2.5% carbonyl iron) to examine the role of iron overload in synaptic plasticity. The involvement of Nrf2 in iron metabolism and brain function was assessed using molecular biological techniques and in vivo resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) through genetic deletion or pharmacologic activation of Nrf2. The results demonstrated a significant correlation between elevated serum iron levels and impaired hippocampal functional connectivity (FC), which contributed to the development of depression-induced CUMS. Iron overload plays a crucial role in CUMS-induced depression and synaptic dysfunction, as evidenced by the therapeutic effects of a high-iron diet and DFOM. The observed iron overload in this study was associated with decreased Nrf2 levels and increased expression of transferrin receptors (TfR). Notably, inhibition of iron accumulation effectively attenuated CUMS-induced synaptic damage mediated by downregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Nrf2 −/− mice exhibited compromised FC within the limbic system and the basal ganglia, particularly in the hippocampus, and inhibition of iron accumulation effectively attenuated CUMS-induced synaptic damage mediated by downregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Activation of Nrf2 restored iron homeostasis and reversed vulnerability to depression. Mechanistically, we further identified that Nrf2 deletion promoted iron overload via upregulation of TfR and downregulation of ferritin light chain (FtL), leading to BDNF-mediated synapse damage in the hippocampus. Therefore, our findings unveil a novel role for Nrf2 in regulating iron homeostasis while providing mechanistic insights into poststress susceptibility to depression. Targeting Nrf2-mediated iron metabolism may offer promising strategies for developing more effective antidepressant therapies.

Abstract Adenosma buchneroides Bonati, belonging to the genus Adenosum (Plantaginaceae), is an aromatic medicinal plant and utilized in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been widely used as plant-based repellents to prevent vector-borne diseases. However, the lack of a reference genome limits the study of conservation management and molecular biology of A. buchneroides. Here, we generated a chromosome-level de novo genome assembly of A. buchneroides which is a high-quality chromosome-scale assembly of aromatic medicinal plant in Plantaginaceae. The genome has a total length of 442.84 Mb with scaffold N50 of 27.98 Mb and 95.55% of the genome assigned to 14 chromosomes. BUSCO assessment yielded a completeness score of 97.2%. Furthermore, we predicted 24,367 protein-coding genes, and 95.79% of them was functionally annotated. The chromosome-scale genome of A. buchneroides will be a significant resource for understanding the genetic basis and evolution of active components biosynthesis, which will facilitate further study and exploit of A. buchneroides.

Abstract DNA nanoparticles hold great promise for a range of biological applications, including the development of cutting-edge treatments and diagnostic tests. Their subnanometer-level addressability enables precise, specific modifications with a variety of chemical and biological entities, making them ideal as diagnostic instruments and carriers for targeted delivery. This paper focuses on the potential of DNA nanomaterials, which offer scalability, programmability, and functionality. For example, they can be engineered to provide highly specific biosensing and bioimaging capabilities and show promise as a platform for disease diagnosis and treatment. Successful operation of various biomedical nanomaterials has been demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. However, there are still significant challenges to overcome, including the need to improve the scalability and reliability of the technology, and to ensure safety in clinical applications. We discuss these challenges and opportunities in detail and highlight the progress and prospects of DNA nanotechnology for biomedical applications.

The study aims to investigate the multiple mediating roles of core self-evaluation and sense of school belonging in the relationship between father-child attachment and academic burnout in college students. A sample of 418 college students completed the father-child attachment scale, the scale of sense of school belonging, core self-evaluation scale, and academic burnout scale. After controlling for variables such as mother–child attachment, gender, age, and grade, the results showed: (1) father-child attachment was significantly and negatively correlated with academic burnout, and positively correlated with core self-evaluation and sense of school belonging; both core self-evaluation and sense of school belonging were significantly and negatively correlated with academic burnout. (2) The multiple mediating model of father-child attachment influencing academic burnout in college students was established. Both core self-evaluation and sense of school belonging played a partial mediating role between father-child attachment and academic burnout. The direct effect of father-child attachment on academic burnout accounts for 33.3% of the total effect. The indirect effects of core self-evaluation and sense of school belonging between father-child attachment and academic burnout account for 50.0 and 16.7% of the total effect, respectively. These findings identify the internal mechanisms through which father-child attachment affects academic burnout in college students from personal traits and interpersonal perspectives.

Abstract Early clinical diagnosis, effective intraoperative guidance, and an accurate prognosis can lead to timely and effective medical treatment. The current conventional clinical methods have several limitations. Therefore, there is a need to develop faster and more reliable clinical detection, treatment, and monitoring methods to enhance their clinical applications. Raman spectroscopy is noninvasive and provides highly specific information about the molecular structure and biochemical composition of analytes in a rapid and accurate manner. It has a wide range of applications in biomedicine, materials, and clinical settings. This review primarily focuses on the application of Raman spectroscopy in clinical medicine. The advantages and limitations of Raman spectroscopy over traditional clinical methods are discussed. In addition, the advantages of combining Raman spectroscopy with machine learning, nanoparticles, and probes are demonstrated, thereby extending its applicability to different clinical phases. Examples of the clinical applications of Raman spectroscopy over the last 3 years are also integrated. Finally, various prospective approaches based on Raman spectroscopy in clinical studies are surveyed, and current challenges are discussed.

The use of slag-based alkali-activated concrete (AAC) could effectively address the issues of resource extraction and carbon emissions caused by traditional Portland cement. In this study, the effects of the fly ash content, water–binder ratio, and alkali activation modulus on the early mechanical properties of AAC were investigated. A total of 105 cube specimens (35 sets) were designed and subjected to compressive strength tests, scanning electron microscope tests, and x-ray diffraction composition analysis. The results indicated that excellent early strength was observed in AAC, with a compressive strength reaching ∼90% of the 28th day strength before 14 days. An increase in the fly ash content and a decrease in the water–binder ratio significantly improved the compressive strength within the same age period. The impact of a lower alkaline activation modulus on strength was found to be insignificant. Based on the experimental results, a calculation method and a constitutive model for early strength were proposed, and the theoretical values exhibited a high level of agreement with the measured values.

Continuous planting is unavoidable in agricultural production, but continuous planting affects plant growth and physiological characteristics. In this study, we analyzed rhizosphere soil nutrients, physiological characteristics, hormone metabolome changes and their interactions of Casuarina equisetifolia (C. equisetifolia) with the increase of continuous planting number. The results found that C. equisetifolia root was significantly inhibited, the plant height was dwarfed and the biomass was significantly reduced as continuous planting number increased. Secondly, continuous planting caused a decrease in the rhizosphere soil nutrient transformation capacity, and a significant decrease in the total soil nutrient and available nutrient content. Analysis of physiological indexes showed that continuous planting resulted in a decrease in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content, a decrease in the activity of physiological indexes of resistance, and a decrease in photosynthetic capacity of C. equisetifolia leaves. Hormone metabolome analysis showed that continuous planting critically affected the accumulation of five characteristic hormones in C. equisetifolia leaves, in which salicylic acid 2-O-β-glucoside (SAG), 2-oxindole-3-acetic acid (OxIAA), trans-zeatin-O-glucoside (tZOG) and gibberellin A3 (GA3) content decreased significantly while abscisic acid (ABA) content increased significantly. In conclusion, continuous planting lowered the rhizosphere soil nutrient transformation capacity of C. equisetifolia, lowered the soil available nutrient content, inhibited their root growth, and hindered the nutrient uptake and transportation by the root, thus led to the decrease of the nutrient accumulation capacity in the leaves of C. equisetifolia, and the decrease of SAG, OxIAA, and tZOG, GA3 synthesis ability decreased, ABA accumulated in large quantities, C. equisetifolia resistance and photosynthesis ability decreased, and their growth was impeded. This study provides insights for the effective management of continuous planting in the cultivation of C. equisetifolia.

Selective surface dissolution was found to be important in spodumene flotation. In this study, we proposed to introduce ultrasound into the pretreatment process to accelerate particle vibration and cavitation, as well as the migration of mineral surface components to solution. Micro-flotation results showed that the flotation recovery of spodumene can be 86.08% by ultrasound pretreatment, but only 39.30% by traditional mechanical agitation pretreatment. Compared with traditional mechanical agitation, ultrasonic pretreatment can shorten the pretreatment process, reduce the dosage of agents, reduce the mechanical agitation speed, and improve the efficiency of the pretreating process. Inductively coupled plasma analysis showed that, in the ultrasonic system, the amount of Li, Al, and Si species in the solution was twice as much as those in the traditional preprocessing system. Moreover, the scanning electron microscope results demonstrated a larger surface dissolution area in the ultrasonic system. X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that the atomic concentration of Si species on the spodumene surface decreased, whereas the relative atomic concentrations of Li and Al species increased, indicating that the ultrasound effect strengthened the selective dissolution of elements on the mineral surface. The high-resolution spectra of O 1s showed that more collectors are adsorbed on the mineral surface treated by ultrasonic pretreatment.

Abstract It is of great significance to utilize CO2 as feedstock to synthesize biobased products, particularly single cell protein (SCP) as the alternative food and feed. Bioelectrochemical system (BES) driven by clean electric energy has been regarded as a promising way for Cupriavidus necator to produce SCP from CO2 directly. At present, the key problem of culturing C. necator in BES is that reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated in cathode chamber are harmful to bacterial growth. Therefore, it is necessary to find a solution to mitigate the negative effect of ROS. In this study, we constructed a number of C. necator strains displayed with superoxide dismutase (SOD), which allowed the decomposition of superoxide anion radical. The effects of promoters and signal peptides on the cell surface displayed SOD were analyzed. The proteins displayed on the surface were further verified by the fluorescence experiment. Finally, the growth of C. necator CMS incorporating a pBAD-SOD-E-tag-IgAβ plasmid could achieve 4.9 ± 1.0 of OD600 by 7 days, equivalent to 1.7 ± 0.3 g/L dry cell weight (DCW), and the production rate was 0.24 ± 0.04 g/L/d DCW, around 2.7-fold increase than the original C. necator CMS (1.8 ± 0.3 of OD600). This study can provide an effective and novel strategy of cultivating strains for the production of CO2-derived SCP or other chemicals in BES. Graphical Abstract

Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 is considered as a kind of promising technologies for solving the greenhouse effect. Herein, a novel hybrid structure of g-C3N4/ZnO/Ti3C2 photocatalysts was designed and fabricated to investigate their abilities for CO2 reduction. As demonstration, heterojunction of g-C3N4/ZnO can improve photogenerated carriers’ separation, the addition of Ti3C2 fragments can further facilitate the photocatalytic performance from CO2 to CO. Hence, g-C3N4/ZnO/Ti3C2 has efficiently increased CO production by 8 and 12 times than pristine g-C3N4 and ZnO, respectively. Which is ascribed to the photogenerated charge migration promoted by metallic Ti3C2. This work provides a guideline for designing efficient hybrid catalysts on other applications in the renewable energy fields.

Abstract Background By comparing the differences in plant use between various cultures or regions, we can gain a better understanding of traditional knowledge of plant use among different groups, which may lead to a more objective understanding. Even though the Tibetan and Daman people live in the same ecosystem in Gyirong town, China, their cultural backgrounds and livelihoods differ. Therefore, the objective of this study is to document the traditional knowledge of plant use among the Daman people and compare it with the local Tibetan knowledge of plant use. By doing so, we aim to explore the relationship between plant selection and use and the cultural backgrounds of different groups. Methods During fieldwork, ethnobotanical data were collected using various methods including free listings, key informant interviews, and semi-structured interviews. To quantify the importance of plant species in the Daman people’s culture, the culture importance index, informant consensus factor index, and The Index of Agreement on Species consensus (IASc) were used. In addition, we cited previous ethnobotanical survey data from the Tibetan in Gyirong. To more comprehensively compare the differences in plant use between the Daman and Tibetan, this study constructed a knowledge network to compare the knowledge differences between the two groups. Results In this study, traditional knowledge was collected from 32 Daman informants, resulting in a total of 68 species belonging to 39 families mentioned by Daman people and 111 species mentioned by Tibetans. Of these, 58 plants were used by both populations. The plants were classified into 3 categories and 28 subcategories, with 22 identical classes in both groups. The majority of use categories showed a high degree of sharing in both groups, and the Tibetan people had more plant use categories than the Daman people. Five plants with IASc value > 0.5 were identified in both groups: Rhododendron anthopogon D. Don, Artemisia japonica Thunb., Juniperus indica Bertol., Gastrodia elata Blume, and Rheum australe D. Don. The analysis of the knowledge network revealed a 66% overlap between the knowledge of the Daman and the knowledge of the Tibetans. Additionally, the plant knowledge of Tibetan people was found to be richer and more complex than that of the Daman people. However, the Daman people possess 30 unique knowledge items. Conclusions From the perspective of plant use, the history of the Daman people's discrete migration on the border between China and Nepal allows them to retain their own knowledge of plant use. The status quo of joining Chinese nationality and settling in Gyirong town allows them to gradually integrate into the local Tibetan society. In summary, despite living in the same ecosystem and biodiversity background, the plant utilization of the Daman people and Tibetans still shows significant differences, which are due to their different cultural backgrounds and social status.

Leaf spreading is a key processing step that affects the aroma formation of green tea. The effects of a single-light wavelength on the aroma and taste of tea have been extensively studied. Less attention has been paid to the effect of different complex light intensities on the formation of green tea’s volatile aroma during leaf spreading. The current study was designed to evaluate how leaf spreading under different complex light intensities relates to the quality of green tea. Using headspace solid-phase micro-extraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME/GC-MS), volatile flavor compounds in green tea were analyzed during leaf spreading in five different light conditions. Multivariate statistical analysis and odor activity values (OAVs) were used to classify these samples and identify key odors. Eight distinct groups, including ninety volatile compounds, were detected. The most prevalent volatile compounds found in green tea samples were hydrocarbons and alcohols, which accounted for 29% and 22% of the total volatile compounds, respectively. Fourteen volatile compounds (OAV > 1) were identified as key active differential odorants. The chestnut-like aroma in green tea was mostly derived from 3-methyl-butanal and linalool, which were significantly accumulated in medium-intensity light (ML).

It is generally recognized that the quality differences in plant germplasm resources are genetically determined, and that only a good “pedigree” can have good quality. Ecological memory of plants and rhizosphere soil fungi provides a new perspective to understand this phenomenon. Here, we selected 45 tea tree germplasm resources and analyzed the rhizosphere soil fungi, nutrient content and tea quality. We found that the ecological memory of tea trees for soil fungi led to the recruitment and aggregation of dominant fungal populations that were similar across tea tree varieties, differing only in the number of fungi. We performed continuous simulation and validation to identify four characteristic fungal genera that determined the quality differences. Further analysis showed that the greater the recruitment and aggregation of Saitozyma and Archaeorhizomyces by tea trees, the greater the rejection of Chaetomium and Trechispora, the higher the available nutrient content in the soil and the better the tea quality. In summary, our study presents a new perspective, showing that ecological memory between tea trees and rhizosphere soil fungi leads to differences in plants’ ability to recruit and aggregate characteristic fungi, which is one of the most important determinants of tea quality. The artificial inoculation of rhizosphere fungi may reconstruct the ecological memory of tea trees and substantially improve their quality.

Tea plant is an acidophilic plant, and soil pH has an important effect on the absorption and enrichment of elements, tea plant growth and quality. In this study, rhizosphere soils and leaves of tea plants from 30 tea plantations were collected to determine soil pH and multi-element content of soil and leaves of tea plants, to obtain and validate key elements that are enriched by pH affecting tea plants, and to analyze the effects of pH on the growth and quality of tea plants. The results showed that soil pH significantly affected the enrichment of 15 elements by tea plants, and the enrichment coefficients of 11 elements (C, Mg, Si, N, P, Mn, Sr, Cd, S, Ca and Sb) tended to increase significantly with the increase of soil pH, while the opposite was true for the other four elements (Cu, Rb, Ba and Al). TOPSIS analysis showed that soil pH had the greatest effect on tea plant enrichment of seven elements, namely N (100%), Mn (43.32%), C (39.22%), P (27.66%), Sr (15.30%), Mg (13.41%) and Ba (10.47%). Pot experiments with tea seedlings also verified that soil pH significantly affected the enrichment of tea leaves for seven key elements. Moreover, with the increase of soil pH, the growth indexes, photosynthesis indexes and quality indexes of tea seedlings showed a significant upward trend. Interaction analysis showed that the enhanced enrichment of N, Mn, C, P, Sr and Mg by tea plants was beneficial to increase the photosynthetic capacity of tea plants, promote the growth of tea plants and improve the quality of tea leaves. This study provides an important theoretical basis for the cultivation and management of tea plants.

There are obvious differences in quality between different varieties of the same plant, and it is not clear whether they can be effectively distinguished from each other from a bacterial point of view. In this study, 44 tea tree varieties (Camellia sinensis) were used to analyze the rhizosphere soil bacterial community using high-throughput sequencing technology, and five types of machine deep learning were used for modeling to obtain characteristic microorganisms that can effectively differentiate different varieties, and validation was performed. The relationship between characteristic microorganisms, soil nutrient transformation, and tea quality formation was further analyzed. It was found that 44 tea tree varieties were classified into two groups (group A and group B) and the characteristic bacteria that distinguished them came from 23 genera. Secondly, the content of rhizosphere soil available nutrients (available nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium) and tea quality indexes (tea polyphenols, theanine, and caffeine) was significantly higher in group A than in group B. The classification result based on both was consistent with the above bacteria. This study provides a new insight and research methodology into the main reasons for the formation of quality differences among different varieties of the same plant.

It is of great significance to explore the molecular mechanism of gametophytic sexual reproduction in the genetic improvement and breeding of tea plants [Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze]. Imported beta family members (IMBs) are a class of widely distributed nucleoplasmic transport receptor proteins in eukaryotes, affecting plant development and reproduction, and participating in flowering time and sexual reproduction. Still missing, though, is a thorough examination of IMB members in tea plants. Here, seven members of the IMB gene family were screened by a genome-wide investigation in tea plants. These members were scattered unevenly throughout five chromosomes. All of them contained the conserved KAP95 and HEAT Repeat domains. Additionally, the promoter regions of CsIMBs harbored cis-acting elements associated with plant hormones, light, and abiotic stress responses. In order to further confirm the function of CsIMBs in the sexual reproduction of tea plants, the expression patterns of CsIMBs in different flower development stages and the ovary (before and after pollination) were analyzed. The expression results highlighted that CsIMBs were related to the fertility and fruiting of tea plants. Furthermore, five of the seven CsIMBs (CsIMB1a, CsIMB1b, CsIMB2, CsIMB3a, and CsIMB3b) were found to be localized in the nucleus revealed by subcellular localization analysis. These results offer a comprehensive characterization of IMB genes as well as insights into the potential roles of CsIMBs participating in the gametophytic sexual reproduction of C. sinensis.

The quality of the Dahongpao mother tree (Camellia sinensis) remains a mystery to this day. In this study, for the first time, the differences between the Dahongpao mother tree (MD) and Dahongpao cuttings (PD), in terms of odor characteristics and taste characteristics were analyzed by metabomics. The results showed that MD had stronger floral, fruity, green, and woody odor characteristics than PD, and that the contributions were mainly from dihydromyrcenol, methyl salicylate, 2-isobutylpyrazine, 1,6-dihydrocarveol, gamma-terpineol, and linalyl acetate. Further, fresh and brisk taste and mellowness taste characteristics of MD were significantly higher than PD, with contributions mainly from amino acids and derivatives and organic acids. Secondly, bitterness taste characteristics of PD were significantly higher than MD, with contributions from phenolic acids, flavones, and flavonols. This study preliminarily unraveled the legend of the superior quality of the Dahongpao mother tree, and also provided an important reference for the breeding of tea-tree cuttings.
