Search

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are bright milliseconds-duration radio bursts from cosmological distances. Despite intense observational and theoretical studies, their physical origin is still mysterious. One major obstacle is the lack of identification of multi-wavelength counterparts for FRBs at cosmological distances. So far, all the searches other than in the radio wavelength, including those in the gamma-ray energies, have only left upper limits. Here we report a gigaelectronvolt (GeV) gamma-ray flare lasting 15.6 seconds as well as additional evidence of variable gamma-ray emission in temporal and spatial association with the hyper-active, newly discovered repeating FRB 20240114A, which has been localized to a dwarf galaxy at a redshift of 0.13. The energetic, short GeV gamma-ray flare reached a prompt isotropic luminosity of the order of ${10}^{48}~{\rm ergs~{s}^{-1}}$. The additional less-significant gamma-ray flares, if true, also have similar luminosities; such flares could contribute to a 5-day average luminosity of the order of ${10}^{45}~{\rm ergs~{s}^{-1}}$. These high-luminosity flares challenge the traditional FRB engine scenario involving a seconds-period magnetar. Rather, it suggests a powerful, long-lived, but newborn energy source at the location of this active repeater, either directly powering the bursts or indirectly triggering bursts in the vicinity of the FRB engine., Comment: Comments are welcome

Energy-dependence of X-ray Fourier power spectral states and the characteristic frequencies of the Band-Limited Noise (BLN) components have been seen in the hard state and intermediate states of black hole X-ray binaries. Here we report our analysis of the \emph{Insight}-HXMT observations of the black hole transient MAXI J1820$+$070 during its 2018 outburst when the source was brightest in hard X-rays. We found opposite trends of the low-frequency ($<$ 0.1 Hz) and the high-frequency ($>$ 10 Hz) BLN components, i.e., decreasing vs. increasing in frequency with increasing photon energy up to beyond 200 keV, respectively. This establishes an apparent two-way broadening of the power plateau formed by multiple BLNs in the power spectra towards higher photon energies. The trend of increasing characteristic frequency of the highest BLN component with increasing photon energy has been interpreted as due to that the corresponding seed photons which are up-scatted to relatively higher energies originate in a region relatively more central in the corona previously. Following the same framework, the decreasing trend of the characteristic frequency of the low-frequency BLN component with increasing photon energy can be interpreted as due to that the corresponding seed photons which are up-scattered to higher photon energies originate from further out in the disk flow but on the opposite side of the central corona as to the observer. The opposite trends then implies that the the plateau in the power spectra formed by the multiple BLNs represents the radial extension of the accretion disk that contributes seed photons which produce the observed BLNs; the higher the photon energy is, the wider the power plateau and the smaller the fractional variability are, probably approaching to a Power-Law Noise (PLN) seen in the soft state., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, submitted to ApJ

We made use high-cadence observations from the $Insight$-HXMT and $NICER$ to scrutinize the spectral and timing evolution during the 2018 outburst of the black hole X-ray binary (BHXRB) MAXI J1820+070. It's hardness-intensity diagram (HID) displays a ''q''-like track including all the spectral states, along a unique loop in the hard state. The tracks observed in the HID is anticipated in the evolution of the components responsible for Compton and reflection emission. This is substantiated by the relationship between the X-ray luminosity $L_\mathrm{X}$ and photon index $\Gamma$, as well as the relationship between X-ray luminosity $L_\mathrm{X}$ and the ratio of Compton to disk luminosities $L_\mathrm{C}/L_\mathrm{D}$. Both of these relationships exhibit a pattern reminiscent of HID. During the hard state, the hardness (also $\Gamma$) is determined by either reflection component ($R_{f}>1$ ) or Compton component ($R_{f}<1$) depending on the value reflection fraction $R_{f}$. So the distinctive evolution of $R_{f}$ leads to the unique loop in the HID (also in the $L_\mathrm{X}$--$\Gamma$ plane) of hard state. Additionally, we found a negative correlation between frequency of the type-C quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) ($\nu_{\mathrm{C,QPO}}$) and the optical depth of the Compton emission ($\tau$), and a positive correlation between $\nu_{\mathrm{C,QPO}}$ and $\Gamma$. These correlations strongly suggest a coupling between the QPO properties and the underlying process responsible for Comptonization., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are bright, millisecond-duration radio bursts of cosmic origin. There have been several dozen FRBs found to repeat. Among them, those precisely localized provide the best opportunity to probe their multi-wavelength counterparts, local environment, and host galaxy that would reveal their origins. Here we report our X-ray, ultraviolet (UV) and optical observations with the $Swift$ satellite that were performed simultaneously in the radio band with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) observations of the repeating FRB 20190520B, aiming at detection of possible multi-wavelength bursts in association with radio bursts and multi-wavelength counterpart of the persistent radio source (PRS). While a total of 10 radio bursts were detected by FAST at the same time of $Swift$ observations, we detected neither X-ray, UV or optical bursts in accompany of the radio bursts, nor persistent multi-wavelength counterpart of the PRS. We obtained the energy upper limits ($3\sigma$) on any multi-wavelength bursts as $5.03 \times 10^{47}$ erg in the hard X-ray band (15-150 keV), $7.98 \times 10^{45}$ erg in the soft X-ray band (0.3-10 keV), and $4.51 \times 10^{44}$ erg in the U band, respectively. The energy ratio between soft X-ray (0.3-10 keV) and radio emission of the bursts is constrained as $<6\times10^{7}$, and the ratio between optical (U band) and radio as $<1.19\times10^{6}$. The 3$\sigma$ luminosity upper limits at the position of PRS are 1.04$\times10^{47}$ (15-150 keV), 8.81$\times10^{42}$ (0.3-10 keV), 9.26$\times10^{42}$ (UVW1), and 2.54$\times10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (U), respectively. We show that the PRS is much more radio loud than representative pulsar wind nebulae, supernova remnants, extended jet of Galactic X-ray binaries and ultraluminous X-ray sources, suggestive of boosted radio emission of the PRS., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, submitted to ApJ

The megajansky radio burst, FRB 20200428, and other bright radio bursts detected from the Galactic source SGR J1935+2154 suggest that magnetars can make fast radio bursts (FRBs), but the emission site and mechanism of FRB-like bursts are still unidentified. Here we report the emergence of a radio pulsar phase of the magnetar five months after FRB 20200428. 795 pulses were detected in 16.5 hours over 13 days by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio telescope, with luminosities about eight decades fainter than FRB 20200428. The pulses were emitted in a narrow phase window anti-aligned with the X-ray pulsation profile observed by the X-ray telescopes. The bursts, conversely, appear in random phases. This dichotomy suggests that radio pulses originate from a fixed region within the magnetosphere, but bursts occur in random locations and are possibly associated with explosive events in a dynamically evolving magnetosphere. Among more than 800 known fast radio bursts (FRBs), only two, namely FRB 20121102A and FRB 20190520B, are confirmed to be associated with a persistent radio sources (PRS). Here we report evidence of apparent temporal variability in the PRS associated with the bursting FRB 20190520B based on the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations taken in 2020 and 2021. Based on the analysis of epoch-to-epoch variability of the PRS at L, S, C, and X band in 1-12 GHz, we detected not only overall marginal variability but also a likely radio flux decrease ($\sim$ 3.2 $\sigma$) between the observations taken in 2020 and 2021 at 3 GHz. Assuming no spectral variation in the PRS during these observations, we found the evidence for an overall broadband radio flux decrease by about 20 percent between the 2020 and the 2021 observations, suggesting that the PRS probably evolves on the yearly time scale. If we attribute the marginal variability at 3 GHz as intrinsic or due to scintillation, the size of potential variable component of the PRS is constrained to be sub-parsec. On the other hand, the size of the PRS can be also constrained to be larger than about 0.22 parsec from the averaged radio spectrum and the integrated radio luminosity in the 1-12 GHz band based on equipartition and self-absorption arguments. We discuss potential origins of the PRS and suggest that an accreting compact object origin might be able to explain the PRS's temporal and spectral properties. The origin of current angular momentum (AM) of the black hole (BH) in X-ray binary (XRB) is still unclear, which is related with the birth and/or the growth of the BH. Here we collect the spin parameters $a_{*}$ measured in BH XRBs and find an apparent bimodal distribution centered at $\sim$ 0.17 and 0.83. We find a positive relation between the spin parameter and the orbital period/orbital separation through combining distinct XRB categories, including neutron star (NS) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF) BH XRBs and wind-fed BH XRBs. It seems that the AM of the compact star and the binary orbit correlates by combining the different XRB systems. These positive relations imply that accretion process is a common mechanism for spinning up the compact star in these diverse XRB systems. We infer that the low and high spin BH XRBs may experience different evolution and accretion history, which corresponds to the bimodal distribution of the BH spin parameters. The low spin BHs ($a_{*}<0.3$) are similar to the NS LMXBs, the compact star of which is spun-up by the low-level accretion, and the high spin BHs ($a_{*}>0.5$) had experienced a short hypercritical accretion ($\gg \dot{M}_\mathrm{Edd}$) period, during which, the BH spin dramatically increased., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

X-ray low frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) of black hole X-ray binaries, especially those type-C LFQPOs, are representative timing signals of black hole low/hard state and intermediate state, which has been suspected as to originate due to Lense-Thirring precession of the accretion flow. Here we report an analysis of one of the \emph{Insight}-HXMT observations of the black hole transient MAXI J1820$+$070 taken near the flux peak of its hard spectral state during which strong type-C LFQPOs were detected in all three instruments up to photon energies above 150 keV. We obtained and analyzed the short-timescale X-ray spectra corresponding to high- and low-intensity phases of the observed LFQPO waveform with a spectral model composed of Comptonization and disk reflection components. We found that the normalization of the spectral model is the primary parameter that varied between the low and high-intensity phases. The variation in the LFQPO flux at the hard X-ray band (> 100 keV) is from the Compton component alone, while the energy-dependent variation in the LFQPO flux at lower energies (< 30 keV) is mainly caused by the reflection component with a large reflection fraction in response to the incident Compton component. The observed X-ray LFQPOs thus should be understood as manifesting the original timing signals or beats in the hard Compton component, which gives rise to additional variability in softer energies due to disk reflection., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are brief, intense flashes of radio waves from unidentified extragalactic sources. Polarized FRBs originate in highly magnetized environments. We report observations of the repeating FRB 20190520B spanning seventeen months , which show its amount of Faraday rotation is highly variable and twice changes its sign. The FRB also depolarizes below radio frequencies around 1 to 3 GHz. We interpret these properties as due to change in the parallel component of the integrated magnetic field along the line-of-sight, including reversals. This could result from propagation through a turbulent, magnetized screen of plasma located between $10^{-5}$ to 100 parsecs of the FRB source. The X-ray variability in the soft X-ray spectral state of black hole binaries is primarily characterized by a power-law noise (PLN), which is thought to originate from the propagation of the modulation in the mass accretion rate of a standard accretion disk flow. Such a PLN has also been revealed in the disk spectral component in the hard and the intermediate states in several black hole binaries. Here we present an investigation of the {\it Rossi} X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations of four black hole transients in which soft spectral states were observed twenty times or more. We show that in the soft spectral state, the PLN index varied in a large range between -1.64 and -0.62, and the fractional rms variability calculated in the 0.01 -- 20 Hz frequency range reached as large as 7.67\% and as low as 0.83\%. Remarkably, we have found the evidence of an inclination dependence of the maximal fractional rms variability, the averaged fractional rms variability and the fractional rms variability of the median in the sample based on current knowledge of inclination of black hole binaries. An inclination dependence has only been predicted in early magnetohydrodynamic simulations of isothermal disks limited to a high-frequency regime. In theory, the noise index is related to the physics of inward propagation of disk fluctuations, while the fractional rms amplitude reflects the intrinsic properties of the magnetohydrodynamic nature of the accretion flow. The physical mechanism for triggering the changing-look phenomenon in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is still unclear. We explore this issue based on the multi-wavelength spectral and flux variations for a changing-look AGN Mrk~1018 with long-term observations in the X-ray, optical/ultraviolet(UV), and radio bands. Both the optical and the X-ray emission experience rapid decay in changing-look phase during 2010--2015, where a re-flare appears in the optical/UV and X-ray bands. We find a time lag of $\sim 20 $ days of optical/UV behind X-ray variations in type 1.9 phase. The 5 GHz radio flux decreases by $\sim 20$\% in type 1.9 phase during 2016--2017. We find both X-ray photon index ($\Gamma$) and the optical-to-X-ray spectral index (\alphaox\,) are anti-correlated with the Eddington scaled 2--10~keV X-ray luminosity ($L_\mathrm{X}/L_\mathrm{Edd}$) in the type 1.9 phase. However, the type 1 phase deviates from these two anti-correlations, which suggests that the change of broad emission lines might be regulated by the evolution of accretion disk (e.g., disappearing of the inner cold disk in the type 1.9 phase)., Comment: 12 pages,5 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We report the detection of a short-lived narrow quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) at ~88 mHz in an Insight-HXMT observation during the soft state of the persistent black hole high mass X-ray binary Cygnus X-1. This QPO is significantly detected in all the three instruments of Insight-HXMT, so in the broad energy range 1-250 keV. The fractional rms of the QPO does not show significant variations above 3 keV (~5%) while decreases at lower energy (~2%). We show that this QPO is different from the type-A, -B, and -C QPOs usually observed in black hole X-ray binaries. We compare QPOs at similar frequencies that have been previously detected in other persistent high-mass X-ray binaries in the soft state; we speculate that such QPOs might relate to some local inhomogeneity rarely formed in the accretion flow of wind-fed accretion systems., Comment: ApJ in press

We present the results of a weekly monitoring of the new black hole candidate X-ray binary MAXI J1631-472 carried out with the MeerKAT radio interferometer, the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, and the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) instrument, during its 2018-2019 outburst. The source exhibits a number of X-ray states, in particular both high- and low-luminosity hard states bracketed by extended soft states. Radio flaring is observed shortly after a transition from hard/intermediate states to the soft state. This is broadly in agreement with existing empirical models, but its extended duration hints at multiple unresolved flares and/or jet-ISM interactions. In the hard state radio:X-ray plane, the source is revealed to be 'radio quiet' at high luminosities, but to rejoin the `standard' track at lower luminosities, an increasingly commonly-observed pattern of behaviour., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The nature of fast radio bursts (FRBs) is currently unknown. Repeating FRBs offer better opportunity than non-repeating FRBs since their simultaneous multi-wavelength counterparts might be identified. The magnetar flare model of FRBs is one of the most promising models which predicts high energy emission in addition to radio burst emission. To investigate such a possibility, we have searched for simultaneous and quasi-simultaneous short-term hard X-ray bursts in all the Swift/BAT event mode data which covered the periods when fast radio bursts were reported detections in the repeating FRB 121102, by making use of BAT's arcmin level spacial resolution and wide field-of-view. We did not find any significant hard X-ray bursts which occurred simultaneously to those radio bursts. We also investigated potential short X-ray bursts occurred quasi-simultaneous with those radio bursts (occurrence time differs in the range from hundreds of seconds to thousands of seconds) and concluded that even the best candidates are consistent with background fluctuations. The neutron star low-mass X-ray binary SAX J1712.6-3739 is known for its very long and hard thermonuclear bursts in past X-ray observations. Its thermonuclear bursts are so energetic that they can even last for tens of minutes in the hard X-ray observations of Swift/BAT (E > 15 keV). For exploring the natures of SAX J1712.6-3739 and its thermonuclear bursts, we analyzed its four bursts which were all captured by Swift/BAT. The peak flux and fluence for these bursts are derived by applying the archive observation data of Swift/BAT and Swift/XRT. Based on the peak fluxes observed by Swift, the distance of SAX J1712.6-3739 is estimated as 4.6 kpc, which is much closer than the estimate by the BeppoSAX observations. The corresponding absolute magnitude and average accretion rate agree its ultra-compact X-ray binary nature. By the measurements of effective duration, we determined that the 2010 burst corresponds to a normal X-ray burst, the 2011 burst is consistent with an intermediate-duration burst while the 2014 and the 2018 bursts are more energetic than common intermediate-duration bursts but less energetic than superbursts. Since the average mass accretion rate of SAX J1712.6-3739 was only 0.6% Eddington accretion rate, and current theory predict no carbon production in the bursters under very low accretion rate. Therefore, the 2014 and the 2018 bursts are very likely to be deep helium bursts. In the Swift observations, SAX J1712.6-3739 has shown at least three different levels of duration in thermonuclear bursts. They were possibly induced by variable accretion rates, because their ignition column depths roughly follow the prediction of ignition models for pure helium bursts at corresponding accretion rates., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted by ApJ

The nature of fast radio bursts (FRBs), which occurs on millisecond time scales in the radio band, has not been well-understood. Among their unknown observational properties are their broadband spectra and persistent and transient multi-wavelength counterparts. Well-localized FRBs provide us the opportunity to address these issues in archival observations. We have performed searches for 15-150 keV hard X-ray bursts on time scales as short as millisecond in the direction of the repeating FRB 121102 (with a spacial resolution of a few arcminutes) in the archival Swift/BAT data during the period between October 2016 and September 2017. We have found no significant (5 $\sigma$) hard X-ray bursts in the direction of the repeating FRB. We have derived an upper limit of the hard X-ray (15--150 keV) flux of any X-ray bursts on 1 ms time scale of around $1.01 \times 10^{-7}$erg cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, if assuming a photo-index of 2 for potential X-ray flares in X-ray band. For an inclined accretion flow around a rotating black hole, the combined effect of the Lense-Thirring precession and viscous torque tends to align the inner part of the flow with the black hole spin, leading to the formation of a warped disc, known as the Bardeen-Petterson effect (Bardeen & Petterson 1975). In tidal disruption events (TDEs) in which a super-massive black hole starts to accrete the bound debris, if the black hole is spinning, in general the stellar orbit is inclined with the black hole spin. So is the accretion disc formed following circularization and radiative cooling of the debris. Xiang-Gruess et al. (2016) studied in detail the stellar debris evolution and disc formation in TDEs when the stellar orbit is inclined, and found that a warped disc would form under certain conditions. In this work we investigate properties of time-resolved fluorescent iron line originating from a warped disc that is irradiated by the initial X-ray flare. We find that the time-resolved spectrum shows distinct features before and after a critical time. This critical time depends on the Bardeen-Petterson radius $r_{\rm BP}$, i.e., the outer boundary of the inner aligned disc; while the line width during the later stage of the X-ray flare is sensitive to the inclination of the outer disc flow. This demonstrates that time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy can be a powerful tool to probe the Bardeen-Petterson effect in TDE flares and can be used to measure the Bardeen-Petterson radius as well as put constraint on the black hole mass and spin., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Gamma-Ray Integrated Detectors (GRID) is a space mission concept dedicated to monitoring the transient gamma-ray sky in the energy range from 10 keV to 2 MeV using scintillation detectors onboard CubeSats in low Earth orbits. The primary targets of GRID are the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the local universe. The scientific goal of GRID is, in synergy with ground-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors such as LIGO and VIRGO, to accumulate a sample of GRBs associated with the merger of two compact stars and study jets and related physics of those objects. It also involves observing and studying other gamma-ray transients such as long GRBs, soft gamma-ray repeaters, terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, and solar flares. With multiple CubeSats in various orbits, GRID is unaffected by the Earth occultation and serves as a full-time and all-sky monitor. Assuming a horizon of 200 Mpc for ground-based GW detectors, we expect to see a few associated GW-GRB events per year. With about 10 CubeSats in operation, GRID is capable of localizing a faint GRB like 170817A with a 90% error radius of about 10 degrees, through triangulation and flux modulation. GRID is proposed and developed by students, with considerable contribution from undergraduate students, and will remain operated as a student project in the future. The current GRID collaboration involves more than 20 institutes and keeps growing. We have investigated the outburst properties of low-mass X-ray binary transients (LMXBTs) based on a comprehensive study of the outbursts observed in the past few decades. The outburst rates were estimated based on the X-ray monitoring data from Swift/BAT, RXTE/ASM and MAXI, and previous reports in the literature. We found that almost all LMXBTs with the orbital period below $\sim$12 hr showed only one outburst in these observations. There are systematic difference in the outburst rate between long-period ($P_{\rm orb} \gtrsim$ 12 hr) and short-period ($P_{\rm orb} \lesssim$ 12 hr) systems. We infer that mass transfer rate is responsible for the systematic difference, since the disk instability model (DIM) suggested that the mass transfer rate is a key factor affecting the quiescence time. The difference in outburst rate between long-period and short-period LMXBTs is probably due to the different mass transfer mechanism at different evolutionary stages of the donors. Based on the evolutionary tracks of single stars, we derived the critical orbital period for X-ray binaries that harbor a subgiant donor in various metallicity. The critical orbital period ($P_{\rm orb,crit}=$12.4 hr) is consistent with the above orbital period boundary obtained from the statistics of outburst rates. Furthermore, we found a negative correlation between the outburst rate and the orbital period in the samples for which the luminosity class of the donor star is III/IV. The best-fitting power-law index for the black hole subsamples is roughly consistent with the theoretical prediction for those systems with a donor star evolved off the main sequence., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures, 1 table; accepted by ApJ

In this White Paper we present the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to Observatory Science targets. These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. Developed by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s., Comment: Accepted for publication on Sci. In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. Under development by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Science, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s., Comment: Accepted for publication on Sci. Luminosity of X-ray spectral state transitions in black hole and neutron star X-ray binaries can put constraint on the critical mass accretion rate between accretion regimes. Previous studies indicate that the hard-to-soft spectral state transitions in some ultracompact neutron star LMXBs have the lowest luminosity. With X-ray monitoring observations in the past decade, we were able to identify state transitions towards the lowest luminosity limit in 4U 0614+091, 2S 0918-549 and 4U 1246-588. By analysing corresponding X-ray pointed observations with the Swift/XRT and the RXTE/PCA, we found no hysteresis of state transitions in these sources, and determined the critical mass accretion rate in the range of 0.002 - 0.04 $\dot{\rm M}_{\rm Edd}$ and 0.003 - 0.05 $\dot{\rm M}_{\rm Edd}$ for the hard-to-soft and the soft-to-hard transition, respectively, by assuming a neutron star mass of 1.4 solar masses. This range is comparable to the lowest transition luminosity measured in black hole X-ray binaries, indicating the critical mass accretion rate is not affected by the nature of the surface of the compact stars. Our result does not support the Advection-Dominated Accretion Flow (ADAF) model which predicts that the critical mass accretion rate in neutron star systems is an order of magnitude lower if same viscosity parameters are taken. The low transition luminosity and insignificant hysteresis in these ultracompact X-ray binaries provide further evidence that the transition luminosity is likely related to the mass in the disc., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, to appear in MNRAS

We carry out a dedicated study of 3XMM J181923.7$-$170616\ with an approximate pulsation period of 400~s using the XMM-Newton and Swift observations spanning across nine years. We have refined the period of the source to 407.904(7) s (at epoch MJD 57142) and determined a period derivative limit of $\dot{P}{\leq} 5.9\pm 5.4\times 10^{-9} s s^{-1}$ ($1\sigma$). The source radiates hard, persistent X-ray emission during the observation epochs, which is best described by an absorbed \powerlaw\ model ($\Gamma \sim 0.2$--0.8) plus faint Fe lines at 6.4 keV and 6.7 keV. The X-ray flux revealed a variation within a factor of 2, along with a spectral hardening as the flux increased. The pulse shape is sinusoid-like and the spectral properties of different phases do not present significant variation. The absorption N$_H$ $\sim 1.3\times 10^{22} cm^{-2}$ is similar to the total Galactic hydrogen column density along the direction, indicating that it is a distant source. A search for the counterpart in optical and near-infrared surveys reveals a low mass K-type giant, while the existence of a Galactic OB supergiant is excluded. A symbiotic X-ray binary is the favored nature of 3XMM J181923.7$-$170616 and can essentially explain the low luminosity of ${2.78\times 10^{34} d_{10}^{2} erg s^{-1}}$, slow pulsation, hard X-ray spectrum, and possible K3~III companion. We report the detection of the state transitions and hysteresis effect in the two mini-outbursts of the black hole (BH) transient GRS 1739$-$278 following its 2014 major outburst. The X-ray spectral evolutions in these two mini-outbursts are similar to the major outburst, in spite of their peak luminosities and the outburst durations are one order of magnitude lower. We found the $L_\mathrm{hard-to-soft}$ and the $L_\mathrm{peak,soft}$ of the mini-outbursts also follow the correlation previous found in other X-ray binaries. The $L_\mathrm{hard-to-soft}$ of the mini-outbursts is still higher than that of the persistent BH binary Cyg X-1, which supports that there is a link between the maximum luminosity a source can reach in the hard state and the corresponding non-stationary accretion represented by substantial rate-of-change in the mass accretion rate during flares/outbursts. The detected luminosity range of these two mini-outbursts is roughly in 3.5$\times 10^{-5}$-- 0.015 ($D/7.5$ kpc)$^{2}$($M/8M_{\odot}$) $L_\mathrm{Edd}$. The X-ray spectra of other BH transients at such low luminosities are usually dominated by a power-law component, and an anti-correlation is observed between the photon index and the X-ray luminosity below 1\% $L_\mathrm{Edd}$. So the detection of X-ray spectral state transitions indicates that the accretion flow evolution in these two mini-outbursts of GRS 1739$-$278 are different from other BH systems at such low-luminosity regime., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We studied the outburst properties of the hyper-luminous X-ray source ESO 243-49 HLX-1, using the full set of Swift monitoring observations. We quantified the increase in the waiting time, recurrence time, and e-folding rise timescale along the outburst sequence, and the corresponding decrease in outburst duration, total radiated energy, and e-folding decay timescale, which confirms previous findings. HLX-1 spends less and less time in outburst and more and more time in quiescence, but its peak luminosity remains approximately constant. We compared the HLX-1 outburst properties with those of bright Galactic low-mass X-ray binary transients (LMXBTs). Our spectral analysis strengthens the similarity between state transitions in HLX-1 and those in Galactic LMXBTs. We also found that HLX-1 follows the nearly linear correlations between the hard-to-soft state transition luminosity and the peak luminosity, and between the rate of change of X-ray luminosity during the rise phase and the peak luminosity, which indicates that the occurrence of the hard-to-soft state transition of HLX-1 is similar to those of Galactic LMXBTs during outbursts. We found that HLX-1 does not follow the correlations between total radiated energy and peak luminosity, and between total radiated energy and e-folding rise/decay timescales we had previously identified in Galactic LMXBTs. HLX-1 would follow those correlations if the distance were several hundreds of kiloparsecs. Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) can be perfect probes of dormant SMBHs in normal galaxies. During the rising phase, the accretion luminosity can increase by orders of magnitude in several weeks and the emergent ionizing radiation illuminates the fresh accretion flow. In this paper, we simulated the evolution of the expected spectral line profile of iron due to such a flare by using a ray-tracing code with effects of general relativity (GR) taken into account. We found that the time-dependent profile changes significantly with black hole spin, inclination angle with respect to the black-hole equatorial plane, and the expansion velocity of the ionization front. At low values of spin, a "loop" feature appears in the line profile vs. time plot when the inclination is no less than $30^\circ$ and the expansion velocity $v_{\rm exp}$ is no less than half speed of light, due to a shadow in the emission of the truncated disk. In the light curve two peaks occur depending on the inclination angle. At large $v_{\rm exp}$, a shallow "nose" feature may develop ahead of the loop, its duration depends on the expansion velocity and the inclination angle. Episodic jets are usually observed in the intermediate state of black hole transients during their X-ray outbursts. Here we report the discovery of a strong positive correlation between the peak radio power of the episodic jet $P_{\rm jet}$ and the corresponding peak X-ray luminosity $L_{\rm x}$ of the soft state (in Eddington units) in a complete sample of the outbursts of black hole transients observed during the RXTE era of which data are available, which follows the relation $\log P_{\rm jet}=(2.2\pm{0.3})+(1.6\pm0.2)\times \log {L_{\rm x}}$. The transient ultra-luminous X-ray source in M31 and HLX-1 in EXO 243-49 fall on the relation if they contain stellar mass black hole and either stellar mass black hole or intermediate mass black hole, respectively. Besides, a significant correlation between the peak power of the episodic jet and the rate-of-increase of the X-ray luminosity $\rm dL_{x}/dt$ during the rising phase of those outbursts is also found, following $\log P_{\rm jet}=(2.0\pm{0.4})+(0.7\pm0.2)\times \log {\rm d}L_{\rm x}/{\rm d}t$. In GX 339$-$4 and H 1743$-$322 in which data for two outbursts are available, measurements of the peak radio power of the episodic jet and the X-ray peak luminosity (and its rate-of-change) shows similar positive correlations between outbursts, which demonstrate the dominant role of accretion over black hole spin in generating episodic jet power. On the other hand, no significant difference is seen among the systems with different measured black hole spin in current sample. SKA's large field of view and high sensitivity at low frequencies will provide almost a complete coverage of the very early rising phase of extragalactic and Galactic transients which undergo a flare or outburst due to an abrupt accretion onto either supermassive (such as tidal disruption events, TDEs) or stellar mass black hole transients (such as black hole LMXB) , when their broadband emission is supposed to be jet-dominated at low luminosities, allowing SKA to be the first facility to make source discoveries and to send out alerts for follow-up ground or space observations as compared with the sensitivity of future X-ray wide-field-view monitoring. On the other hand, due to extremely large rate-of-change in the mass accretion rate during the rising phase of TDE flares or transient outbursts, SKA will be able to cover an extremely large range of the mass accretion rate as well as its rate-of-change not accessible with observations in persistent black hole systems, which will shape our understanding of disk-jet coupling in accreting black holes in the non-stationary accretion regimes., Comment: To be published in: "Advancing Astrophysics with the Square Kilometre Array", Proceedings of Science, PoS(AASKA14)

We have studied the evolution of the Low Frequency Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (LFQPOs) during the rising phase of seven outbursts of the neutron star Soft X-ray Transient (SXT) Aql X$-$1 observed with the \textit{Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE)}. The frequency correlation between the low frequency break and the LFQPO sampled on the time scale of $\sim$2 days was seen. Except for the peculiar 2001 outburst, the frequency of the LFQPOs increased with time before the hard-to-soft state transition up to a maximum $\nu_{max}$ at $\sim$31 Hz, a factor of $\sim$5 higher than those seen in black hole transients such as GX 339$-$4, making the maximum QPO frequency a likely indicator of the mass of the central compact object. The characteristic frequencies increased by around ten percent per day in the early rising phase and accelerated to nearly one hundred percent per day since $\sim$2 days before the hard-to-soft state transition. We examined the dependence of the frequency $\nu_{LF}$ on the source flux $f$ and found an anti-correlation between the maximum frequency of the LFQPOs and the corresponding X-ray luminosity of the hard-to-soft transition (or outburst peak luminosity) among the outbursts. We suggest that X-ray evaporation process can not be the only mechanism that drives the variation of the inner disk radius if either of the twin kHz QPO corresponds to the Keplerian frequency at the truncation radius., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in ApJ

We have performed a statistical study of the properties of 110 bright X-ray outbursts in 36 low-mass X-ray binary transients (LMXBTs) seen with the All-Sky Monitor (2--12 keV) on board the {\it Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer} ({\it RXTE}) in 1996--2011. We have measured a number of outburst properties, including peak X-ray luminosity, rate of change of luminosity on a daily timescale, $e$-folding rise and decay timescales, outburst duration, and total radiated energy. We found that the average properties such as peak X-ray luminosity, rise and decay timescales, outburst duration, and total radiated energy of black hole LMXBTs, are at least two times larger than those of neutron star LMXBTs, implying that the measurements of these properties may provide preliminary clues as to the nature of the compact object of a newly discovered LMXBT. We also found that the outburst peak X-ray luminosity is correlated with the rate of change of X-ray luminosity in both the rise and the decay phases, which is consistent with our previous studies. Positive correlations between total radiated energy and peak X-ray luminosity, and between total radiated energy and the $e$-folding rise or decay timescale, are also found in the outbursts. These correlations suggest that the mass stored in the disk before an outburst is the primary initial condition that sets up the outburst properties seen later. We also found that the outbursts of two transient stellar-mass ULXs in M31 also roughly follow the correlations, which indicate that the same outburst mechanism works for the brighter outbursts of these two sources in M31 that reached the Eddington luminosity., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

We found the black hole candidate MAXI J1659-152 showed distinct power spectra, i.e., a power-law noise (PLN) vs. band-limited noise (BLN) plus quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs), below and above about 2 keV respectively, in the observations with the Swift and the RXTE during the 2010 outburst, indicating a high energy cut-off of the PLN and a low energy cut-off of the BLN and the QPOs around 2 keV. The emergence of the PLN and the fading of the BLN and the QPOs initially took place from below 2 keV when the source entered the hard intermediate state and finally settled in the soft state three weeks later. The evolution was accompanied by the emergence of the disk spectral component and decreases in the amplitudes of variability in the soft X-ray and the hard X-ray bands. Our results indicate that the PLN is associated with the optically thick disk in both hard and intermediate states, and power spectral state is independent of the X-ray energy spectral state in a broadband view. We suggest that in the hard and the intermediate state, the BLN and the QPOs emerge from the innermost hot flow subjected to Comptonization, while the PLN originates from the optically thick disk further out. The energy cut-offs of the PLN and the BLN or QPOs then follow the temperature of the seed photons from the inner edge of the optically thick disk, while the high frequency cut-off of the PLN follows the orbital frequency at the inner edge of the optically thick disk as well., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Test particles infalling from infinity onto a compact spherical star with a mildly super-Eddington luminosity at its surface are typically trapped on the "Eddington Capture Sphere" and do not reach the surface of the star. The presence of a sphere on which radiation pressure balances gravity for static particles was first discovered some twenty five years ago. Subsequently, it was shown to be a capture sphere for particles in radial motion, and more recently also for particles in non-radial motion, in which the Poynting-Robertson radiation drag efficiently removes the orbital angular momentum of the particles, reducing it to zero. Here we develop this idea further, showing that "levitation" on the Eddington sphere (above the stellar surface) is a state of stable equilibrium, and discuss its implications for Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion onto a luminous star. When the Eddington sphere is present, the cross-section of a compact star for actual accretion is typically less than the geometrical cross-section (pi Rsquared), direct infall onto the stellar surface only being possible for relativistic particles, with the required minimum particle velocity at infinity typically ~1/2 the speed of light. We further show that particles on typical trajectories in the vicinity of the stellar surface will also be trapped on the Eddington Capture Sphere., Comment: 6 pages, 13 panels in 8 figures

The black hole X-ray transient GX 339$-$4 was observed with the {\it Swift} satellite across the hard-to-soft state transition during its 2010 outburst. The ultraviolet (UV) flux measured with the filter UVW2 of the {\it Swift}/UVOT started to decrease nearly 10 days before the drop in the hard X-ray flux when the hard-to-soft state transition started. The UV flux $F_\mathrm{UV}$ correlated with the X-ray flux $F_\mathrm{X}$ as $F_\mathrm{UV}\propto F_\mathrm{X}^{0.50\pm0.04}$ before the drop in the UV flux. During the UV drop lasting about 16 days, the X-ray flux in 0.4--10 keV was increasing. The drop in the UV flux indicates that the jet started to quench 10 days before the hard-to-soft state transition seen in X-rays, which is unexpected., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter
