Abstract Tamoxifen, a pivotal therapy for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, is known for its efficacy in reducing breast cancer recurrence and mortality. However, concerns about potential ocular complications, particularly maculopathy, have emerged. This study aims to investigate the risk and associated factors of diverse macular conditions in tamoxifen users, considering drug exposure, demographics, and systemic diseases. A nationwide cohort of tamoxifen users, comprised of 14,267 tamoxifen users, was analyzed using the health insurance review and assessment database in South Korea. Demographic and clinical characteristics were examined, and the cumulative incidence of macular diseases was stratified by age and cumulative tamoxifen dosage. We conducted logistic regression analysis to identify potential risk factors among clinical variables such as age, sex, indications for tamoxifen use, and systemic diseases associated with various macular conditions. Additionally, Cox proportional hazard models were used to determine the baseline clinical characteristics predictive of these macular conditions, with subsequent calculation of hazard ratios. Cumulative incidences of overall macular diseases, other maculopathy excluding common macular diseases, and macular edema were 26.4, 11.4, and 6.5%, respectively. Abstract In this study, we analyze the extent of user reactions based on user’s tweets to news articles, demonstrating the potential for home location prediction. To achieve this, we quantify users’ reactions to specific news articles based on the textual similarity between tweets and news articles, showcasing that users’ reactions to news articles about their cities are significantly higher than those about other cities. To maximize the difference in reactions, we introduce the concept of News Distinctness, which highlights the news articles that affect a specific location. By incorporating News Distinctness with users’ reactions to the news, we magnify its effects. Through experiments conducted with tweets collected from users whose home locations are in five representative cities within the United States and news articles describing events occurring in those cities, we observed a 6.75% to 40% improvement in the reaction score when compared to the average reactions towards news for outside of home location, clearly predicting the home location. Furthermore, News Distinctness increases the difference in reaction score between news in the home location and the average of the news outside of the home location by 12% to 194%. These results demonstrate that our proposed idea can be utilized to predict the users’ location, potentially recommending meaningful information based on the users’ areas of interest.

Abstract In this population-based cohort study, we investigated screening practices for maculopathy and incidences of specific macular/retinal conditions in pentosan polysulfate (PPS) users and assessed the relationship between these outcomes and drug exposure levels. Using a health claims database that covers approximately 50 million Koreans, we identified 138,593 individuals who were prescribed PPS between 2010 and 2021. For the 133,762 PPS users who initiated therapy between 2012 and 2021, the cumulative PPS dose for each participant was evaluated, and based on their cumulative PPS dose, patients were categorized into the high-risk (≥ 500 g), low-risk (50–500 g), and minimal exposure ( 0.05). Abstract Nicotiana benthamiana is a fundamental model organism in plant research. Recent advancements in genomic sequencing have revealed significant intraspecific genetic variations. This study addresses the pressing need for a precise genome sequence specific to its geographic origin by presenting a comprehensive genome assembly of the N. benthamiana LAB strain from the Republic of Korea (NbKLAB). We compare this assembly with the widely used NbLAB360 strain, shedding light on essential genomic differences between them. The outcome is a high-quality, chromosome-level genome assembly comprising 19 chromosomes, spanning 2,762 Mb, with an N50 of 142.6 Mb. Comparative analyses revealed notable variations, including 46,215 protein-coding genes, with an impressive 99.5% BUSCO completeness score. Furthermore, the NbKLAB assembly substantially improved the QV from 33% for NbLAB360 to 49%. This refined chromosomal genome assembly for N. benthamiana, in conjunction with comparative insights, provides a valuable resource for genomics research and molecular biology. This accomplishment forms a strong foundation for in-depth exploration into the intricacies of plant genetics and genomics, improved precision, and a comparative framework.

Background We aimed to identify the risk of incident depression according to cumulative exposure to a low-household income status in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods For this retrospective longitudinal population-based cohort study, we used Korean National Health Insurance Service data from 2002 to 2018. Risk of depression was assessed according to cumulative exposure to low-household income status (defined as Medical Aid registration) during the previous 5 years among adults (aged ≥20 years) with T2DM and without baseline depression who underwent health examinations from 2009 to 2012 (n=2,027,317). Results During an average 6.23 years of follow-up, 401,175 incident depression cases occurred. Advance in cumulative number of years registered for medical aid during the previous 5 years from baseline was associated with an increased risk of depression in a dose-dependent manner (hazard ratio [HR], 1.44 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.38 to 1.50]; HR, 1.40 [95% CI, 1.35 to 1.46]; HR, 1.42, [95% CI, 1.37 to 1.48]; HR, 1.46, [95% CI, 1.40 to 1.53]; HR, 1.69, [95% CI, 1.63 to 1.74] in groups with 1 to 5 exposed years, respectively). Insulin users exposed for 5 years to a low-household income state had the highest risk of depression among groups categorized by insulin use and duration of low-household income status. Conclusion Cumulative duration of low-household income status, defined as medical aid registration, was associated with an increased risk of depression in a dose-response manner in individuals with T2DM.

Abstract In this nationwide population-based cohort study, we investigated the demographic and clinical characteristics associated with hydroxychloroquine retinopathy screening using the National Health Insurance Review and Assessment database in South Korea. This study included a total of 32,732 at-risk patients, identified based on having been prescribed hydroxychloroquine for at least 6 months, and 15,477 long-term (> 5 years) users between January 2010 and December 2020. Participants were categorized based on the performance of baseline examinations (within 1 year of hydroxychloroquine use) and monitoring examinations (after 5 years of hydroxychloroquine use). Demographic and clinical factors, including hospitals and medical specialties prescribing hydroxychloroquine, indications for hydroxychloroquine use, and prescription details, were compared between groups. Abstract Improvements in long read DNA sequencing and related techniques facilitated the generation of complex eukaryotic genomes. Despite these advances, the quality of constructed plant reference genomes remains relatively poor due to the large size of genomes, high content of repetitive sequences, and wide variety of ploidy. Here, we developed the de novo sequencing and assembly of high polyploid plant genome, Hibiscus syriacus, a flowering plant species of the Malvaceae family, using the Oxford Nanopore Technologies and Pacific Biosciences Sequel sequencing platforms. We investigated an efficient combination of high-quality and high-molecular-weight DNA isolation procedure and suitable assembler to achieve optimal results using long read sequencing data. We found that abundant ultra-long reads allow for large and complex polyploid plant genome assemblies with great recovery of repetitive sequences and error correction even at relatively low depth Nanopore sequencing data and polishing compared to previous studies. Collectively, our combination provides cost effective methods to improve genome continuity and quality compared to the previously reported reference genome by accessing highly repetitive regions. The application of this combination may enable genetic research and breeding of polyploid crops, thus leading to improvements in crop production.

With the increasing utilization of data in various industries and applications, constructing an efficient data pipeline has become crucial. In this study, we propose a machine learning operations-centric data pipeline specifically designed for an energy consumption management system. This pipeline seamlessly integrates the machine learning model with real-time data management and prediction capabilities. The overall architecture of our proposed pipeline comprises several key components, including Kafka, InfluxDB, Telegraf, Zookeeper, and Grafana. To enable accurate energy consumption predictions, we adopt two time-series prediction models, long short-term memory (LSTM), and seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA). Our analysis reveals a clear trade-off between speed and accuracy, where SARIMA exhibits faster model learning time while LSTM outperforms SARIMA in prediction accuracy. To validate the effectiveness of our pipeline, we measure the overall processing time by optimizing the configuration of Telegraf, which directly impacts the load in the pipeline. The results are promising, as our pipeline achieves an average end-to-end processing time of only 0.39 s for handling 10,000 data records and an impressive 1.26 s when scaling up to 100,000 records. This indicates 30.69–90.88 times faster processing compared to the existing Python-based approach. Additionally, when the number of records increases by ten times, the increased overhead is reduced by 3.07 times. This verifies that the proposed pipeline exhibits an efficient and scalable structure suitable for real-time environments.

In this study, we propose a simple yet effective method for incorporating the source speaker's characteristics in the target speaker's speech. This allows our model to generate the speech of the target speaker with the style of the source speaker. To achieve this, we focus on the attention model within the speech synthesis model, which learns various speaker features such as spectrogram, pitch, intensity, formant, pulse, and voice breaks. The model is trained separately using datasets specific to the source and target speakers. Subsequently, we replace the attention weights learned from the source speaker's dataset with the attention weights from the target speaker's model. Finally, by providing new input texts to the target model, we generate the speech of the target speaker with the styles of the source speaker. We validate the effectiveness of our model through similarity analysis utilizing five evaluation metrics and showcase real-world examples.

Background We explored the risk of death from pneumonia according to cumulative duration in low household income state (LHIS) among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods Using Korean National Health Insurance Service data (2002 to 2018), the hazards of mortality from pneumonia were analyzed according to duration in LHIS (being registered to Medical Aid) during the 5 years before baseline (0, 1–4, and 5 years) among adults with T2DM who underwent health examinations between 2009 and 2012 (n=2,503,581). Hazards of outcomes were also compared in six groups categorized by insulin use and duration in LHIS. Results During a median 7.18 years, 12,245 deaths from pneumonia occurred. Individuals who had been exposed to LHIS had higher hazards of death from pneumonia in a dose-response manner (hazard ratio [HR], 1.726; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.568 to 1.899 and HR, 4.686; 95% CI, 3.948 to 5.562 in those exposed for 1–4 and 5 years, respectively) compared to the non-exposed reference. Insulin users exposed for 5 years to LHIS exhibited the highest outcome hazard among six groups categorized by insulin use and duration in LHIS. Conclusion Among adults with T2DM, cumulative duration in LHIS may predict increased risks of mortality from pneumonia in a graded dose-response manner. Insulin users with the longest duration in LHIS might be the group most vulnerable to death from pneumonia among adults with T2DM.

Abstract We aimed to compare the risk of incident diabetes according to fatty liver disease (FLD) definition, focusing on the comparison between those who met criteria for either metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) but not the other. This was a 5.0-year (interquartile range, 2.4–8.2) retrospective longitudinal cohort study of 21,178 adults who underwent at least two serial health checkup examinations. The presence of hepatic steatosis was determined by abdominal ultrasonography at the first health examination. Cox proportional hazard analyses were used to compare the risk of incident diabetes among five groups. Incident diabetes cases occurred in 1296 participants (6.1%). When non-FLD without metabolic dysfunction (MD) group was set as a reference, the risk of incident diabetes increased in the order of NAFLD-only, non-FLD with MD, both FLD, and MAFLD-only groups. The presence of excessive alcohol consumption and/or hepatitis B virus (HBV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, FLD, and MD synergistically increased the risk of incident diabetes. MAFLD-only group showed a greater increase in incidence of diabetes than non-FLD with MD and NAFLD-only groups. The interaction among excessive alcohol consumption, HBV/HCV infection, MD, and hepatic steatosis on the development of diabetes should not be overlooked.

Background/Objective: Hydroxychloroquine retinopathy, traditionally characterized by parafoveal or pericentral outer retinal damage, is explored for atypical presentations in Asian patients. This challenges conventional beliefs regarding onset, retinopathy pattern, and associated visual field defects. Methods: Ninety-five patients diagnosed with hydroxychloroquine retinopathy at Hanyang University Hospital underwent screening from January 2010 to December 2023. Swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), ultra-widefield fundus autofluorescence (UWF-FAF), and automated visual fields (VF) were employed for detailed structural and functional evaluations. Multifocal electroretinography was performed in selected cases requiring additional objective evidence of retinal toxicity. Results: Among 95 patients, 14 (14.7%) exhibited atypical presentations, including very early onset (n = 1), (far) peripheral-dominant damages (n = 4), perivascular involvement (n = 1), bitemporal hemianopsia due to nasal extensive lesions (n = 1), unilateral involvement (n = 2), and asymmetric involvement in retinopathy pattern or severity between the eyes (n = 7). These findings underscore the importance of utilizing expanded imaging techniques, such as ultra-widefield FAF imaging, to identify atypical presentations of retinal involvement. Conclusions: Screening physicians should consider these atypical presentations to ensure timely diagnosis and appropriate management in patients undergoing hydroxychloroquine treatment.

(1) Background/Objectives: To investigate the nationwide screening practices and trends in tamoxifen retinal toxicity (tamoxifen retinopathy) in South Korea using national health insurance claims data. (2) Methods: A total of 43,848 patients who started tamoxifen therapy between 2015 and 2020 and had no prior ophthalmic diseases or other conditions requiring screening for retinopathy were included. The annual numbers of tamoxifen users and new initiators of tamoxifen therapy were assessed. The screening examinations were separated into baseline (first ophthalmic examination after tamoxifen administration) and subsequent monitoring examinations. The timing and modalities for the baseline and subsequent monitoring examinations performed between 2015 and 2021 were assessed in tamoxifen users. (3) Results: The annual number of tamoxifen users increased over the study period from 54,056 in 2015 to 81,720 in 2021. The number of patients who underwent ophthalmic examination after tamoxifen administration was 8961 (20.4%). Baseline screening was performed in 6.5% of patients within 1 year of use, and subsequent monitoring was performed in 27.8% of patients who underwent baseline screening. Funduscopy or fundus photography was performed most commonly for baseline screening and subsequent monitoring (99.0% and 98.6%, respectively), while optical coherence tomography was performed only in 21.9% and 29.6% of baseline and monitoring examinations, respectively. The average number of monitoring examinations per year was 0.68 ± 0.45. Although the annual percentage of patients receiving a baseline examination within 1 year gradually increased over time, the percentage of those with subsequent monitoring performed within 1 year was similar over the study period. (4) Conclusions: Our finding, appropriate screening in a small proportion of patients receiving tamoxifen, suggests the need to promote awareness among healthcare professionals and develop a standardized approach for screening for tamoxifen retinopathy.

Abstract Accurately detecting disease occurrences of crops in early stage is essential for quality and yield of crops through the decision of an appropriate treatments. However, detection of disease needs specialized knowledge and long-term experiences in plant pathology. Thus, an automated system for disease detecting in crops will play an important role in agriculture by constructing early detection system of disease. To develop this system, construction of a stepwise disease detection model using images of diseased-healthy plant pairs and a CNN algorithm consisting of five pre-trained models. The disease detection model consists of three step classification models, crop classification, disease detection, and disease classification. The ‘unknown’ is added into categories to generalize the model for wide application. In the validation test, the disease detection model classified crops and disease types with high accuracy (97.09%). The low accuracy of non-model crops was improved by adding these crops to the training dataset implicating expendability of the model. Our model has the potential to apply to smart farming of Solanaceae crops and will be widely used by adding more various crops as training dataset.

Background This study investigated the trends of insulin use among Korean patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Changes in prescription of antidiabetic medications in T2DM patients taking insulin therapy were evaluated. Methods We analyzed data from the National Health Insurance Service database in Korea to evaluate the prevalence of insulin users and trends of insulin use in T1DM and T2DM patients from January 2002 to December 2019. We also investigated numbers and types of antidiabetic medications in insulin users with T2DM. Results The overall total number of insulin users increased from 2002 to 2019, reaching 348,254 for T2DM and 20,287 for T1DM in 2019 compared with 109,974 for T2DM and 34,972 for T1DM in 2002. The proportion of patients using basal analogs and short acting analogs have increased and those using human insulin, premixed insulin, or biphasic human insulin have decreased (rapid acting analogs: 71.85% and 24.12% in T1DM and T2DM, respectively, in 2019; basal analogs: 76.75% and 75.09% in T1DM and T2DM, respectively, in 2019). The use of other antidiabetic medication in addition to insulin increased for T2DM, especially in dual therapy, reaching up to 52.35% in 2019 compared with 16.72% in 2002. Conclusion The proportion of the patients using basal or rapid acting analogs increased among all insulin users in both T1DM and T2DM patients. Among patients with T2DM, the proportion of patients using antidiabetic medications in addition to insulin was significantly increased compared to those who used insulin alone.

Abstract Recent advances in artificial intelligence technology have significantly improved facial image manipulation, which is known as Deepfake. Facial image manipulation synthesizes or replaces a region of the face in an image with that of another face. The techniques for facial image manipulation are classified into four categories: (1) entire face synthesis, (2) identity swap, (3) attribute manipulation, and (4) expression swap. Out of them, we focus on expression swap because it effectively manipulates only the expression of the face in the images or videos without creating or replacing the entire face, having advantages for the real-time application. In this study, we propose an evaluation framework of the expression swap models targeting the real-time online class environments. For this, we define three kinds of scenarios according to the portion of the face in the entire image considering actual online class situations: (1) attendance check (Scenario 1), (2) presentation (Scenario 2), and (3) examination (Scenario 3). Considering the manipulation on the online class environments, the framework receives a single source image and a target video and generates the video that manipulates a face of the target video to that in the source image. To this end, we select two models that satisfy the conditions required by the framework: (1) first order model and (2) GANimation. We implement these models in the framework and evaluate their performance for the defined scenarios. Through the quantitative and qualitative evaluation, we observe distinguishing properties of the used two models. Specifically, both models show acceptable results in Scenario 1, where the face occupies a large portion of the image. However, their performances are significantly degraded in Scenarios 2 and 3, where the face occupies less portion of the image; the first order model causes relatively less loss of image quality than GANimation in the result of the quantitative evaluation. In contrast, GANimation has the advantages of representing facial expression changes compared to the first order model. Finally, we devise an architecture for applying the expression swap model to the online video conferencing application in real-time. In particular, by applying the expression swap model to widely used online meeting platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams, we demonstrate its feasibility for real-time online classes.

Abstract Whether metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) can replace nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is under debate. This study evaluated which definition better predicted incident chronic kidney disease (CKD). This was a 5.3-year (range, 2.8–8.3) retrospective cohort study of 21,713 adults who underwent at least two serial health examinations. Cox analyses were used to compare the risk of incident CKD among non-fatty liver disease (FLD) without metabolic dysregulation (MD; reference), non-FLD with MD, MAFLD-only, NAFLD-only, or both-FLD groups. Non-FLD with MD group (hazard ratio [HR] 1.23, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.00–1.53), both-FLD group (HR 1.50, 95% CI 1.19–1.89), and MAFLD-only group (HR 1.97, 95% CI 1.49–2.60), but not NAFLD-only group (HR 1.06, 95% CI 0.63–1.79) demonstrated an increased risk of CKD. The increased risk of CKD was significant in MAFLD subgroups with overweight/obesity (HR 2.94, 95% CI 1.91–4.55), diabetes (HR 2.20, 95% CI 1.67–2.90), MD only (HR 1.50, 95% CI 1.19–1.89), excessive alcohol consumption (HR 2.71, 95% CI 2.11–3.47), and viral hepatitis (HR 2.38, 95% CI 1.48–3.84). The switch from NAFLD to MAFLD criteria may identify a greater number of individuals at CKD risk. The association was also significant in MAFLD patients with excessive alcohol consumption or viral hepatitis.

Background: Anterior uveitis (AU) is a significant concern in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and the choice of tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi) as a treatment modality raises questions regarding its effects on AU. We compared the effects of TNFi on AU in patients with AS. Methods: Patients diagnosed with AS and treated with at least one TNFi, including anti-TNFα antibodies (adalimumab and infliximab) or a soluble TNF receptor molecule (etanercept), between January 2010 and December 2022, were retrospectively reviewed. We compared the recurrence rate of AU in patients with a history of uveitis and the incidence of new-onset AU in those without a history of uveitis among the three TNFi groups. We also compared the effects of two different TNFi agents in patients who underwent TNFi switching. Results: Within two years of treatment initiation, there was no significant difference in AU recurrence among the three TNFi groups. However, the incidence of new-onset AU was significantly higher in the etanercept group than in the adalimumab group (26.4% vs. 6.3%; p = 0.024). After two years, the AU recurrence rate was significantly lower in the adalimumab group than in the other groups (p < 0.001). Among patients who underwent anti-TNFi switching, adalimumab treatment was associated with a significantly lower incidence of uveitis than etanercept (p = 0.023). Conclusion: In the short-term period following TNFi therapy, etanercept induced new-onset AU more frequently than adalimumab in patients with AS. Adalimumab recipients experienced fewer AU recurrences during the subsequent long-term period compared to other TNFi recipients.

A seated saline loading test (SLT) using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is one of the most accepted confirmatory tests of primary aldosteronism. However, LC-MS/MS is time-consuming and is not widely available in diagnostic laboratories compared to immunoassay. With immunoassay, it is unknown whether SLT in the seated position is more accurate than that of the supine position, and a cutoff value of post-seated SLT plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) must be established in the Korean population. Ninety-eight patients underwent SLT in both positions, and post-SLT PAC was measured by LC-MS/MS and radioimmunoassay. We confirmed primary aldosteronism if post-seated SLT PAC by LC-MS/MS exceeded 5.8 ng/dL. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was greater for seated than supine SLT (0.928 vs. 0.834, P=0.003). The optimal cutoff value of post-seated SLT by radioimmunoassay was 6.6 ng/dL (sensitivity 83.3%, specificity 92.2%).

Online social media such as Twitter has been used as an important source for predicting, detecting, or analyzing critical social phenomena such as elections, disease outbreaks, and cyberattacks. In this study, we propose a cyberattack detection model on social media. First, we conduct community detection of users related to cyberattacks on Twitter to identify the most relevant group to the cyberattacks. Second, to effectively identify the tweets related to cyberattacks, we conduct a textual similarity analysis between the tweet and the cyberattack relevant keywords, which overcomes the limitation of lexical analysis of tweets such as keyword-based filtering and frequency of keywords. Finally, we propose a novel cyberattack detection model by integrating both text- and graph-based models. Our methodology has a distinguishing feature from the existing studies in that we incorporate the semantics in Tweets to evaluate the relevance with cyberattacks and employ community detection to identify the most relevant group to the cyberattacks. Through extensive experiments, we show the effectiveness of the proposed model. First, we show that the text analysis in the proposed model outperforms detection accuracy of the keyword frequency-based analysis by up to 29.46%. Second, the community detection improves the detection accuracy by 28.89∼35.56% compared to the baseline criteria to select relevant users to the cyberattacks. Through two experiments to measure the relevancy of detected communities to the cyberattack, the results consistently show that the highest relevant community by our community detection shows the highest relevancy.

The conserved MYST proteins form the largest family of histone acetyltransferases (HATs) that acetylate lysines within the N-terminal tails of histone, enabling active gene transcription. Here, we have investigated the biological and regulatory functions of the MYST family HAT SasC in the opportunistic human pathogenic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus using a series of genetic, biochemical, pathogenic, and transcriptomic analyses. The deletion (Δ) of sasC results in a drastically reduced colony growth, asexual development, spore germination, response to stresses, and the fungal virulence. Genome-wide expression analyses have revealed that the ΔsasC mutant showed 2402 significant differentially expressed genes: 1147 upregulated and 1255 downregulated. The representative upregulated gene resulting from ΔsasC is hacA, predicted to encode a bZIP transcription factor, whereas the UV-endonuclease UVE-1 was significantly downregulated by ΔsasC. Furthermore, our Western blot analyses suggest that SasC likely catalyzes the acetylation of H3K9, K3K14, and H3K29 in A. fumigatus. In conclusion, SasC is associated with diverse biological processes and can be a potential target for controlling pathogenic fungi.

Abstract Background Although both type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), evidence is lacking as to whether the presence of NAFLD confers an additional risk of CVD in patients with T2DM. We investigated the associations between hepatic steatosis and/or fibrosis and risk of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, heart failure (HF), and mortality in patients with new-onset T2DM. Methods Using the Korean National Health Insurance dataset, we included 139,633 patients diagnosed with new-onset T2DM who underwent a national health screening from January 2009 to December 2012. Hepatic steatosis and advanced hepatic fibrosis were determined using cutoff values for fatty liver index (FLI) and BARD score. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models. Results During the median follow-up of 7.7 years, there were 3,079 (2.2%) cases of MI, 4,238 (3.0%) cases of ischemic stroke, 4,303 (3.1%) cases of HF, and 8,465 (6.1%) all-cause deaths. Hepatic steatosis defined as FLI ≥ 60 was associated with increased risk for MI (HR [95% CI], 1.28 [1.14–1.44]), stroke (1.41 [1.25–1.56]), HF (1.17 [1.07–1.26]), and mortality (1.41 [1.32–1.51]) after adjusting for well-known risk factors. Abstract Background Most crop seeds are F1 hybrids. Seed providers and plant breeders must be confident that the seed supplied to growers is of known, and uniform, genetic makeup. This requires maintenance of pure genotypes of the parental lines and testing to ensure the genetic purity of the F1 seed. Traditionally, seed purity has been assessed with a grow-out test (GOT) in the field, a time consuming and costly venture. Early in the last decade, seed testing with molecular markers was introduced as a replacement for GOT, and Kompetitive allele specific PCR (KASP) markers were recognized as promising tools for genetic testing of seeds. However, the markers available at that time could be inaccurate and applicable to only a small number of accessions or varieties due to the limited genetic information and reference genomes available. Results We identified 4,925,742 SNPs in 50 accessions of the Brasscia rapa core collection. From these, we identified 2,925 SNPs as accession-specific, considering properties of flanking region harboring accession-specific SNPs and genic region conservation among accessions by the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis. In total, 100 accession-specific markers were developed as accession-specific KASP markers. Based on the results of our validation experiments, the accession-specific markers successfully distinguised individuals from the mixed population including 50 target accessions from B. rapa core collection and the outgroup. Additionally, the marker set we developed here discriminated F1 hybrids and their parental lines with distinct clusters. Conclusions This study provides efficient methods for developing KASP markers to distinguish individuals from the mixture comprised of breeding lines and germplasms from the resequencing data of Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa spp. pekinensis).

The unique color and type characteristics of watermelon fruits are regulated by many molecular mechanisms. However, it still needs to be combined with more abundant genetic data to fine-tune the positioning. We assembled genomes of two Korean inbred watermelon lines (cv. 242-1 and 159-1) with unique color and fruit-type characteristics and identified 23,921 and 24,451 protein-coding genes in the two genomes, respectively. To obtain more precise results for further study, we resequenced one individual of each parental line and an F2 population composed of 87 individuals. This identified 1,539 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 80 InDel markers that provided a high-density genetic linkage map with a total length of 3,036.9 cM. Quantitative trait locus mapping identified 15 QTLs for watermelon fruit quality-related traits, including β-carotene and lycopene content in fruit flesh, fruit shape index, skin thickness, flesh color, and rind color. By investigating the mapping intervals, we identified 33 candidate genes containing variants in the coding sequence. Among them, Cla97C01G008760 was annotated as a phytoene synthase with a single-nucleotide variant (A → G) in the first exon at 9,539,129 bp of chromosome 1 that resulted in the conversion of a lysine to glutamic acid, indicating that this gene might regulate flesh color changes at the protein level. These findings not only prove the importance of a phytoene synthase gene in pigmentation but also explain an important reason for the color change of watermelon flesh.

Abstract The pandemic of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a public health emergency, and research on the development of various types of vaccines is rapidly progressing at an unprecedented development speed internationally. Some vaccines have already been approved for emergency use and are being supplied to people around the world, but there are still many ongoing efforts to create new vaccines. Virus-like particles (VLPs) enable the construction of promising platforms in the field of vaccine development. Here, we demonstrate that non-infectious SARS-CoV-2 VLPs can be successfully assembled by co-expressing three important viral proteins membrane (M), envelop (E) and nucleocapsid (N) in plants. Plant-derived VLPs were purified by sedimentation through a sucrose cushion. The shape and size of plant-derived VLPs are similar to native SARS-CoV-2 VLPs without spike. Although the assembled VLPs do not have S protein spikes, they could be developed as formulations that can improve the immunogenicity of vaccines including S antigens, and further could be used as platforms that can carry S antigens of concern for various mutations.

Abstract. Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is frequently reactivated by coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), and a high incidence of EBV viremia has been reported in patients with severe COVID-19. However, the impact of EBV viremia on progression to severe COVID-19 is unclear. Therefore, we conducted a study to evaluate the effect of EBV on COVID-19 progression. We investigated EBV viremia at the time of admission in COVID-19 patients hospitalized between February 1, 2020, and April 11, 2021. A cross-sectional study was performed to compare the severity of COVID-19 according to the presence or absence of EBV viremia. However, since it is difficult to analyze the influence of EBV viremia on COVID-19 progression with cross-sectional studies, a retrospective cohort study, limited to patients with mild COVID-19, was additionally conducted to observe progression to severe COVID-19 according to the presence or absence of EBV viremia. Two hundred sixty-nine COVID-19 patients were tested for EBV viremia. In a cross-sectional study that included patients with both mild and severe COVID-19, the EBV viremia group had more severe pneumonia than the EBV-negative group. However, in the cohort study limited to mild cases (N = 213), EBV viremia was not associated with COVID-19 progression. COVID-19 severity may affect EBV viremia; however, there was no evidence that EBV viremia was a factor in exacerbating pneumonia in patients with mild COVID-19.

Abstract Background The spleen contains immune cells and exhibits a pattern of infarction different from other organs; as such, splenic infarction (SI) may provide important clues to infection. However, the nature of the relationship between SI and infectious disease(s) is not well understood. Accordingly, this retrospective study investigated the relationship between SI and infection. Methods Hospital records of patients with SI, who visited Inha University Hospital (Incheon, Republic of Korea) between January 2008 and December 2018, were reviewed. Patient data regarding clinical presentation, causative pathogens, risk factors, and radiological findings were collected and analyzed. Results Of 353 patients with SI, 101 with infectious conditions were enrolled in this study, and their data were analyzed to identify associations between SI and infection. Ten patients were diagnosed with infective endocarditis (IE), and 26 exhibited bacteremia without IE. Twenty-seven patients experienced systemic infection due to miscellaneous causes (negative result on conventional automated blood culture), including the following intracellular organisms: parasites (malaria [n = 12], babesiosis [n = 1]); bacteria (scrub typhus [n = 5]); viruses (Epstein–Barr [n = 1], cytomegalovirus [n = 1]); and unidentified pathogen[s] (n = 7). Splenomegaly was more common among patients with miscellaneous systemic infection; infarction involving other organs was rare. Thirty-eight patients had localized infections (e.g., respiratory, intra-abdominal, or skin and soft tissue infection), and most (35 of 38) had other risk factors for SI. Conclusions In this study, various infectious conditions were found to be associated with SI, and intracellular organisms were the most common causative pathogens. Further studies are needed to examine other possible etiologies and the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.

The relationship between immunity and nutrition is well known and its role in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is also being paid great attention. However, the nutritional status of COVID-19 patients is unknown. Vitamin B1, B6, B12, vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D), folate, selenium, and zinc levels were measured in 50 hospitalized patients with COVID-19. Overall, 76% of the patients were vitamin D deficient and 42% were selenium deficient. No significant increase in the incidence of deficiency was found for vitamins B1, B6, and B12, folate, and zinc in patients with COVID-19. The COVID-19 group showed significantly lower vitamin D values than the healthy control group (150 people, matched by age/sex). Severe vitamin D deficiency (based on a cut-off of ≤10 ng/dl) was found in 24.0% of the patients in the COVID-19 group and 7.3% in the control group. Among 12 patients with respiratory distress, 11 (91.7%) were deficient in at least one nutrient. However, patients without respiratory distress showed a deficiency in 30/38 cases (78.9%; p = 0.425). These results suggest that a deficiency of vitamin D or selenium may decrease the immune defenses against COVID-19 and cause progression to severe disease. However, more precise and large-scale studies are needed.

In this study, we investigate large-scale digital forensic investigation on Apache Spark using a Windows registry. Because the Windows registry depends on the system on which it operates, the existing forensic methods on the Windows registry have been targeted on the Windows registry in a single system. However, it is a critical issue to analyze large-scale registry data collected from several Windows systems because it allows us to detect suspiciously changed data by comparing the Windows registry in multiple systems. To this end, we devise distributed algorithms to analyze large-scale registry data collected from multiple Windows systems on the Apache Spark framework. First, we define three main scenarios in which we classify the existing registry forensic studies into them. Second, we propose an algorithm to load the Windows registry into the Hadoop distributed file system (HDFS) for subsequent forensics. Third, we propose a distributed algorithm for each defined forensic scenario using Apache Spark operations. Through extensive experiments using eight nodes in an actual distributed environment, we demonstrate that the proposed method can perform forensics efficiently on large-scale registry data. Specifically, we perform forensics on 1.52 GB of Windows registry data collected from four computers and show that the proposed algorithms can reduce the processing time by up to approximately 3.31 times, as we increase the number of CPUs from 1 to 8 and the number of worker nodes from 2 to 8. Because the distributed algorithms on Apache Spark require the inherent network and MapReduce overheads, this improvement of the processing performance verifies the efficiency and scalability of the proposed algorithms.

Changes of gonadal morphology and mRNA expression patterns of vitellogenin were investigated in Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii (Chondrostei) during its early gonadal maturation period. Early differentiations and morphological transitions of both ovaries and testes appeared to occur actively until the age of 3 years, however from then on, the maturation patterns to full maturity were largely gender-dependent, in which males showed a faster progression of maturation than did females while females experienced a steady-state progress with a lagged interval before entering the final maturation. Expression of vitellogenin mRNAs are closely correlated with transitional patterns of gonadal appearances. In both females and males, hepatic mRNA levels of vitellogenin exponentially increased in the earliest interval (up to 1-year-old). However, in subsequent periods, vitellogenin expression in females continued to increase with age, whereas in males, the expression stabilized at a younger age. Nevertheless, at the age older than or equal to 7-year-old, fully matured individuals showed a quite low level of vitellogenin expression in both females and males. Collectively, results from this study could be useful as a fundamental guideline to address the gonad maturation of this sturgeon species, which is helpful for making practical decisions about farming practices and management for caviar production on local sturgeon farms.

Behavioral response to a diel photoperiodicity (500 lx for 16 h, 5 lx for 4 h and < 0.5 lx for 4 h) and phototactic characteristics in dark conditions were examined with Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii (Chondrostei, Actinopterygii) prelarvae. Siberian sturgeon prelarvae represented both qualitative and quantitative changes in their behavioral patterns according to different light intensities in a diel photoperiodicity. Under daylight conditions (500 lx), prelarvae displayed saltatory changes of behavioral features with ages (Day 0-Day 9) in a general order of swimming-up/drifting, swimming in the upper water column, benthic swimming with rheotaxis, schooling and postschooling behavior. Compared to daylight conditions, prelarvae tended to show more benthic performances and quantitative reductions of schooling and postschooling behaviors under dimlight conditions (5 lx). Under dark conditions (< 0.5 lx), prelarvae exhibited a fairly uniform behavioral pattern characterized by the benthic swimming across the bottom of the tank. From phototaxis tests under dark conditions, navigational responses of prelarvae to a spotlight illumination were quantitatively changed as their ages increased. The phototactic responses reached the peak on Day 2, continued until Day 4, and then gradually decreased until Day 8. A partial recovery of positive phototaxis was observed on Day 9. Data from this study suggest that the diel light cycle as well as the light intensity of each interval in the cycle should be considered as important components of a practical guide for evaluating fitness and developmental states of artificially propagated Siberian sturgeon prelarvae.

Karyotype analysis is a major work in the process of triploid abalone production for the purpose of productivity and quality improvement. However, the metaphase spreads for karyotype analysis have been prepared just from the larvae at trochophore stage, which has restricted the spectrum of sample correction inhibiting more efficient analysis. Here, we investigated the feasibility of preparing metaphase spreads from the larvae at veliger stage that is the next developmental stage of trochophore. For this, diploid and triploid larvae at trochophore and veliger stages from Pacific abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) were subjected to metaphase spread preparation and its efficiencies were measured and compared each other. As the results, although the efficiencies of metaphase spread preparation were significantly lower in the larvae at veliger stage compared to the ones at trochophore stage regardless of ploidy status, we found that the preparation of metaphase spreads, which showed the clear chromosomal images containing the normal number of chromosomes, was possible from the veliger stage larvae. On the other hands, all larvae used in this study regardless of developmental stage and ploidy did not show colchicine sensitivity. Moreover, no significant difference was observed in cell cycle distribution of the cells comprising larvae between two developmental stages regardless of ploidy status. These suggested that the details of protocol to prepare metaphase spreads from abalone larvae should be optimized depending on its developmental stages. Taken together, we demonstrated the feasibility of preparing metaphase spreads from H. discus hannai veliger stage larvae for karyotype analysis.

Abstract Background Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) may be caused by several allergens. However, to date, HSP caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi has not been reported. Here, we report an unusual rash with features of HSP caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. Case presentation A man visited a tertiary hospital with bilateral symmetrical purpura and fever. He presented with an eschar in the left popliteal fossa and proteinuria. He was diagnosed with tsutsugamushi disease by indirect fluorescent antibody and positive polymerase chain reaction tests. Purpura biopsy demonstrated a feature of leukocytoclastic vasculitis and IgA deposition in dermal vessels, indicative of HSP. Conclusions When examining patients with unique rashes, such as in this case, we suggest investigating out-door activities and evidence of mite bites. Furthermore, differential diagnosis of tsutsugamushi disease should be considered when necessary.

In this paper, we analyze I/O log data monitored in the Windows operating system for improving the system performance. Especially, we focus on the I/O operations to the Windows registry. As a result, we identify redundant access patterns of the Windows applications. To find all the possible redundant patterns from the large-scale log data, we propose the redundancy detection algorithm. Then, we propose the two-level redundancy elimination method to remove unnecessary redundant operations. We also present an event-driven method that guarantees that the result of redundancy elimination is equivalent to that of the original program. Through experiments, we show that the proposed redundancy elimination method improves the performance of the original program having redundant access patterns by up to 90.25% for individual access patterns; by 8.93% ~ 26.21% when the multiple programs having combined access patterns are running concurrently.

A comprehensive understanding of the geographic distribution of the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) complex is necessary due to increasing transboundary movement and cross-reactivity of serological tests. This review was conducted to identify the geographic distribution of the TBEV complex, including TBE virus, Alkhurma haemorrhagic fever virus, Kyasanur forest disease virus, louping-ill virus, Omsk haemorrhagic fever virus, and Powassan virus. Published reports were identified using PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane library. In addition to TBEV complex case-related studies, seroprevalence studies were also retrieved to assess the risk of TBEV complex infection. Among 1406 search results, 314 articles met the inclusion criteria. The following countries, which are known to TBEV epidemic region, had conducted national surveillance studies: Austria, China, Czech, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Sweden, Slovenia, and Slovakia. There were also studies/reports on human TBEV infection from Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, France, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Netherland, and Turkey. Seroprevalence studies were found in some areas far from the TBEV belt, specifically Malaysia, Comoros, Djibouti, and Kenya. Kyasanur forest disease virus was reported in southwestern India and Yunnan of China, the Powassan virus in the United States, Canada, and east Siberia, Alkhurma haemorrhagic fever virus in Saudi Arabia and east Egypt, and Louping-ill virus in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and east Siberia. In some areas, the distribution of the TBEV complex overlaps with that of other viruses, and caution is recommended during serologic diagnosis. The geographic distribution of the TBEV complex appears to be wide and overlap of the TBE virus complex with other viruses was observed in some areas. Knowledge of the geographical distribution of the TBEV complex could help avoid cross-reactivity during the serologic diagnosis of these viruses. Surveillance studies can implement effective control measures according to the distribution pattern of these viruses.

Potential utility of 14 candidate housekeeping genes as normalization reference for RT-qPCR analysis with developmental samples (fertilized eggs to late veliger larvae) in Pacific abalone Haliotis discus hannai was evaluated using four different statistical algorithms (geNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper and comparative ΔCT method). Different algorithms identified different genes as the best candidates, and geometric mean-based final ranking from the most to the least stable expression was as follow: RPL5, RPL4, RPS18, RPL8, RPL7, UBE2, RPL7A, GAPDH, RPL36, PPIB, EF1A, ACTB and B-TU. The findings were further validated via relative quantification of metallothionein (MT) transcripts using the stable and unstable reference genes, and expression levels of MT were greatly influenced according to the choice of reference genes. In overall, our data suggest that RPL5 and RPS18, either singly or in combination, are appropriate for normalizing gene expression in developmental samples of this abalone species, whereas ACTB, B-TU and EF1A are less stable and not recommended. In addition, our findings propose that standard deviations in geometric ranking as well as geometric mean itself should also be taken into account for the final selection of reference gene(s). This study could be a useful basis to facilitate the generation of accurate and reliable RT-qPCR data with developmental samples in this abalone species.

The importance of E3 ubiquitin ligases from different families for plant immune signaling has been confirmed. Plant RING-type E3 ubiquitin ligases are members of the E3 ligase superfamily and have been shown to play positive or negative roles during the regulation of various steps of plant immunity. Here, we present Arabidopsis RING-type E3 ubiquitin ligases AtRDUF1 and AtRDUF2 which act as positive regulators of flg22- and SA-mediated defense signaling. Expression of AtRDUF1 and AtRDUF2 is induced by pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and pathogens. The atrduf1 and atrduf2 mutants displayed weakened responses when triggered by PAMPs. Immune responses, including oxidative burst, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activity, and transcriptional activation of marker genes, were attenuated in the atrduf1 and atrduf2 mutants. The suppressed activation of PTI responses also resulted in enhanced susceptibility to bacterial pathogens. Interestingly, atrduf1 and atrduf2 mutants showed defects in SA-mediated or pathogen-mediated PR1 expression; however, avirulent Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000-induced cell death was unaffected. Our findings suggest that AtRDUF1 and AtRDUF2 are not just PTI-positive regulators but are also involved in SA-mediated PR1 gene expression, which is important for resistance to P. syringae.

In this study, we propose dynamic model update methods for the adaptive classification model of text streams in a distributed learning environment. In particular, we present two model update strategies: (1) the entire model update and (2) the partial model update. The former aims to maximize the model accuracy by periodically rebuilding the model based on the accumulated datasets including recent datasets. Its learning time incrementally increases as the datasets increase, but we alleviate the learning overhead by the distributed learning of the model. The latter fine-tunes the model only with a limited number of recent datasets, noting that the data streams are dependent on a recent event. Therefore, it accelerates the learning speed while maintaining a certain level of accuracy. To verify the proposed update strategies, we extensively apply them to not only fully trainable language models based on CNN, RNN, and Bi-LSTM, but also a pre-trained embedding model based on BERT. Through extensive experiments using two real tweet streaming datasets, we show that the entire model update improves the classification accuracy of the pre-trained offline model; the partial model update also improves it, which shows comparable accuracy with the entire model update, while significantly increasing the learning speed. We also validate the scalability of the proposed distributed learning architecture by showing that the model learning and inference time decrease as the number of worker nodes increases.

Phytochromes are red and far-red photoreceptors that regulate plant growth and development under ambient light conditions. During phytochrome-mediated photomorphogenesis, phytochrome-interacting factors (PIFs) are the most important signaling partners that regulate the expression of light-responsive genes. However, the function of PIFs in monocots has not been studied well. In this study, using RNA interference (RNAi), we investigated the functions of BdPIL1 and BdPIL3, two PIF-like genes identified in Brachypodium distachyon, which are closely related to Arabidopsis PIF1 and PIF3. The expression of their genes is light-inducible, and both BdPIL1 and BdPIL3 proteins interact with phytochromes in an active form-specific manner. Transgenic Brachypodium seedlings with the RNAi constructs of BdPIL1 and BdPIL3 showed decreased coleoptile lengths and increased leaf growth when exposed to both red and far-red light. In addition, the transgenic plants were taller with elongated internodes than wild-type Bd21-3 plant, exhibiting late flowering. Moreover, RNA-seq analysis revealed downregulation of many genes in the transgenic plants, especially those related to the regulation of cell number, floral induction, and chlorophyll biosynthesis, which were consistent with the phenotypes of increased plant height, delayed flowering, and pale green leaves. Furthermore, we demonstrated the DNA-binding ability of BdPIL1 and BdPIL3 to the putative target promoters and that the DNA-binding was inhibited in the presence of phytochromes. Therefore, this study determines a molecular mechanism underlying phytochrome-mediated PIF regulation in Brachypodium, i.e., sequestration, and also elucidates the functions of BdPIL1 and BdPIL3 in the growth and development of the monocot plant.

In polyploids, whole genome duplication (WGD) played a significant role in genome expansion, evolution and diversification. Many gene families are expanded following polyploidization, with the duplicated genes functionally diversified by neofunctionalization or subfunctionalization. These mechanisms may support adaptation and have likely contributed plant survival during evolution. Flowering time is an important trait in plants, which affects critical features, such as crop yields. The flowering-time gene family is one of the largest expanded gene families in plants, with its members playing various roles in plant development. Here, we performed genome-wide identification and comparative analysis of flowering-time genes in three palnt families i.e., Malvaceae, Brassicaceae, and Solanaceae, which indicate these genes were expanded following the event/s of polyploidization. Duplicated genes have been retained during evolution, although genome reorganization occurred in their flanking regions. Further investigation of sequence conservation and similarity network analyses provide evidence for functional diversification of duplicated genes during evolution. These functionally diversified genes play important roles in plant development and provide advantages to plants for adaptation and survival in response to environmental changes encountered during evolution. Collectively, we show that flowering-time genes were expanded following polyploidization and retained as large gene family by providing advantages from functional diversification during evolution.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased risks to people’s health due to restrictions on movement and access to exercise facilities. This study compares and analyzes perceptions and key attributes of exercise among Korean men and women in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic by using data collected from social media. Methods: Data were collected from January 2020 to June 2021. The search keywords were classified into “COVID-19, men, and exercise” and “COVID-19, women, and exercise”, and data were collected through Textom (The Imc Inc., Daegu, Republic of Korea), a big data collection and analysis platform. Frequency analysis, TF-IDF analysis, and degree centrality analysis were performed using Textom. In addition, a CONCOR (CONvergent and CORrelation) analysis was performed using UCINET 6 (Analytic Technologies Corp., Lexington, KY, USA) to visualize related words and analyze clusters. Results: In total, 10,703 data points of 5.935 MB were collected and analyzed. The top 50 words related to men’s and women’s exercises of COVID-19 were derived through frequency analysis, TF-IDF analysis, and degree centrality analysis. We also derived four common clusters (exercise method, COVID-19 situation, friends, and sports). In addition, three clusters (women’s fitness, children and hashtags) for men’s exercise and two clusters (weight loss and Olympics) for women’s exercise were derived separately. Conclusions: The study results show that it is possible to provide suggestions and health improvement plans for exercise based on gender. In addition, our findings can serve as an academic basis for developing health promotion programs related to exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic, which can contribute to reducing the economic costs and health risks associated with the pandemic.

Abstract Background Actinomycosis is a rare, chronic granulomatous disease caused by Gram-positive anaerobic bacteria that colonize the oral cavity. Cervicofacial actinomycosis is the most frequent clinical presentation of actinomycosis, but hematogenous osteomyelitis at distant sites can occur in rare instance in immunocompromised or pediatric patients, only a few cases have been reported in healthy patients. Here we described a new case of distal femur osteomyelitis caused by Actinomyces in an adult patient who was immunocompetent and had no predisposing factors. Case presentation A woman aged 52 years with no history of trauma presented with severe pain, swelling, and increased local heat in the proximal area of the right knee 3 weeks after she first noticed discomfort. Magnetic resonance imaging showed persistent osteomyelitis of the distal metaphysis and diaphysis of the femur with a multifocal intraosseous abscess pocket. An incision and drainage of the abscess were conducted. The tissue culture, fungus culture, acid fast bacillus (AFB) culture, AFB smear, and tuberculosis polymerase chain reaction test results were negative. A pathologic examination confirmed the presence of actinomycosis. The patient was successfully treated with intravenous penicillin G for 8 weeks followed by oral amoxicillin-clavulanate for 6 weeks with repeated surgical debridement and drainage. After a 5-year follow up, the patient had no signs of recurring infection or complications and she had full range of movement in the affected knee. Conclusions Although rare, actinomycotic osteomyelitis can occur in healthy people. Furthermore, actinomycotic osteomyelitis is easily misdiagnosed as tuberculosis in areas with a high prevalence of tuberculosis. To detect and identify the bacteria accurately, pathologic examination should be performed as well as culture tests, because the probability for culture confirmation of actinomycosis is quite low. The initial treatment is vital to a successful outcome without ostectomy or amputation.

Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is a key transcription factor for regulating oxygen-dependent homeostasis. Here, we characterized HIF-1α in Pacific abalone (Haliotis discus hannai), an aquaculture-relevant mollusk species, and its transcriptional regulation patterns in response to oxygen-dependent and oxygen-independent stimuli were investigated. The molecular cloning and sequence analysis revealed that the abalone HIF-1α shared conversed features in its domain organization such as basic helix–loop–helix (bHLH) domain, Per-Arnt-Sim (PAS) domain, oxygen-dependent degradation domains (ODDDs), and C-terminal transactivation domain (C-TAD) with metazoan orthologs. The abalone HIF-1α was proven to be transcriptionally active in multiple tissues according to dissolved oxygen contents, with the most sensitive responsiveness in the gill. Under non-hypoxic conditions, the tissue-dependent transcriptional regulation patterns of the abalone HIF-1α were closely correlated and intertwined with those of HSP90 and MT in response to thermal challenge and heavy metal exposure, respectively. The abalone HIF-1α expression was significantly modulated under normoxic conditions in response to immune challenges with lipopolysaccharide and Vibrio harveyi with the highest upregulation in the hemocytes. However, the combined treatment of hypoxia and immune stimulation exhibited no synergistic activation for the induction of HIF-1α mRNA. Collectively, dynamic transcriptional regulation of the abalone HIF-1α with the tissue specificity in response to oxygen-dependent and oxygen-independent stimulatory challenges suggests that HIF-1α plays crucial roles in interdependent crosstalk between hypoxia, innate immunity, and environmental stresses, which can be a useful basis to investigate cellular and physiological responses of farmed abalones to oxygen depletion and other-related stress factors.

This review focuses on surface modifications to gallium‐based liquid metals (LMs), which are stretchable conductors with metallic conductivity and nearly unlimited extensibility due to their liquid nature. Despite the enormous surface tension of LM, it can be patterned into nonspherical shapes, such as wires, due to the presence of a native oxide shell. Incorporating inherently soft LM into elastomeric devices offers comfort, mechanical compliance, and stretchability. The thin oxide layer also enables the formation of stable liquid colloids and LM micro/nanosized droplets that do not coalesce easily. The oxide layer can also be exfoliated and chemically modified into semiconductor 2D materials to create and deposit atomically thin materials at room temperature. Thus, the interface and its manipulation are important. This review summarizes physical and chemical methods of modifying the surface of LM to tune its properties. The surface modification of LM provides unique applications, including use in soft biomedical sensors and actuators with mechanical properties similar to human tissue.

Background: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) feeding provides enteral nutrition to patients with neurological dysphagia. However, the conditions in which PEG should be applied to prevent pneumonia remain unclear. We aimed to evaluate the effect of PEG for patients with neurological dysphagia in preventing pneumonia. Methods: We undertook a retrospective data review of 232 patients with neurological dysphagia who had undergone PEG from January 2008 to December 2018 at Inha University Hospital, in Incheon, Korea. We excluded patients who had not been followed up 6 months pre- and post-PEG feeding. In total, our study comprised 42 patients. We compared pneumonia episodes and incidence pre- and post-PEG. Results: During the median post-PEG follow-up period, the 6-month pneumonia incidence among patients who had undergone PEG had decreased [median 0.3 (interquartile range (IQR) 0.0–0.7) versus 0.1 (IQR 0.1–0.3) episodes, p = 0.04]. In a multiple mixed model, PEG did not decrease the incidence of pneumonia ( p = 0.76). However, the association between PEG and the incidence of pneumonia differed significantly depending on the presence or absence of recurrent pneumonia ( p
