【Objective】Fresh bamboo shoots are bamboo shoot products that have not been blanched or pickled, with a crispy taste and refreshing flavor. However, fresh bamboo shoots breathe vigorously, which are prone to dehydration and wilting, making them difficult to keep fresh, thus affecting their sales. Spontaneous modified atmosphere packaging reduces the respiratory intensity of packaged fruits and vegetables by regulating the gas composition of the internal environment. Studying the effects of different modified atmosphere packaging treatments on the postharvest storage quality and lignification of fresh bamboo shoots could provide references for the selection of fresh-keeping packaging for fresh bamboo shoots.【Method】The peeled fresh bamboo shoots were packed in the spontaneous modified atmosphere preservation bag (thickness 20μm, O2transmission rate 11 643 cm3/m2·d·atm, water vapor transmission rate 62.586 g/m2·d), and the vacuum bag made of nylon was used as control. The packaged fresh bamboo shoots were stored in the cold storage to study the quality change and the difference of lignification degree during storage.【Result】Compared with traditional vacuum preservation techniques, spontaneous modified atmosphere packaging could significantly reduce the respiratory intensity of fresh bamboo shoots during storage by creating a low oxygen and low carbon dioxide(O2 < 5%, CO2 < 5%) environment inside the bag through the respiration of the bamboo shoots themselves and the gas permeability of the membrane material. The peak intensity was only 46.93% of that of vacuum treatment. After 21 days of storage, modified atmosphere packaging significantly inhibited the browning and membrane lipid peroxidation of bamboo shoots. The brightness of the core of packaged bamboo shoots decreased by only 6.17% compared with that upon harvest, while that of vacuum packaging decreased by 17.74%. The content of malondialdehyde in vacuum packaged bamboo shoots was 2.93 times that in modified atmosphere packaging. In terms of lignification, the lignification rates of bamboo shoots in two types of packaging began to increase after 14 days of storage. The activities of key enzymes for lignification of bamboo shoots (phenylalanine ammonia lyase, peroxidase, cinnamon dehydrogenase) peaked in vacuum packaging, and lignification intensified; however, there was no peak in the related enzyme activity of bamboo shoots in the modified atmosphere packaging, and the enzyme activity increased slowly, delaying the lignification of bamboo shoot and maintaining the crisp taste of the bamboo shoots. After 21 days of storage, the lignin content of packaged bamboo shoots decreased by 15.01% compared to vacuum packaged bamboo shoots, effectively extending the freshness period of fresh bamboo shoots.【Conclusion】The low oxygen and low carbon dioxide gas environment in the spontaneous modified atmosphere packaging bag is conducive to the storage of fresh bamboo shoots, and the quality and nutrient content are significantly better than those of vacuum packaging treatment. It has a good market prospect for fresh bamboo shoots.

Tender bamboo shoots undergo rapid senescence that influences their quality and commercial value after harvest. In this study, the tender sweet bamboo shoots (‘Wensun’) were packed by a passive modified atmosphere packaging (PMAP) to inhibit the senescence process, taking polyethylene package as control. The increase in CO2 and the decrease in O2 gas concentrations in the headspace atmosphere of the packages were remarkably modified by PMAP treatments. The modified gas atmosphere packaging inhibited the changes in firmness, as well as the content of cellulose, total pectin, and lignin in the cell walls of bamboo shoots. The enzymatic activities of cellulase, pectinase, and polygalacturonase that act on cell wall polysaccharides, and phenylalanine ammonia lyase, cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase, peroxidase, and laccase regulating the lignin biosynthesis were modified by PMAP treatment different from control during storage. The expression levels of the lignin biosynthesis genes PePAL3/4, PeCAD, Pe4CL5, PeC4H, PeCCOAOMT, PeCOMT, cellulose synthase PeCESA1, and related transcription factors PeSND2, PeKNAT7, PeMYB20, PeMYB63, and PeMYB85 were clearly regulated. These results suggest that PMAP efficiently retards the changes in lignin and cell wall polysaccharides, thus delaying the senescence of tender sweet bamboo shoots during storage.

Mg-Cu alloys are promising antibacterial implant materials. However, their clinical applications have been impeded by their high initial biodegradation rate, which can be alleviated using nanotechnology by for example surface nanomodification to obtain a gradient nanostructured surface layer. The present work (i) produced a gradient nanostructured surface layer with a ∼500 µm thickness on a Mg-0.2 Cu alloy by a surface mechanical grinding treatment (SMGT), and (ii) studied the biodegradation behavior in Hank's solution. The initial biodegradation rate of the SMGTed samples was significantly lower than that of the unSMGTed original counterparts, which was attributed to the surface nanocrystallization, and the fragmentation and re-dissolution of Mg2Cu particles in the surface of the SMGTed Mg-0.2 Cu alloy. Furthermore, the SMGTed Mg-0.2 Cu alloy had good antibacterial efficacy. This work creatively used SMGT technology to produce a high-performance Mg alloy implant material.

Fruits of kiwifruit cultivars (Actinidia chinensis and A. deliciosa) generally have green or yellow flesh when ripe. A small number of genotypes have red flesh but this coloration is usually restricted to the inner pericarp. Three kiwifruit cultivars having red (‘Hongyang’), or yellow (‘Jinnong-2’), or green (‘Hayward’) flesh were investigated for their color characteristics and pigment contents during development and ripening. The results show the yellow of the ‘Jinnong-2’ fruit is due to the combined effects of chlorophyll degradation and of beta-carotene accumulation. The red inner pericarps of ‘Hongyang’ fruit are due to anthocyanin accumulation. Expression differences of the pathway genes in the inner pericarps of the three different kiwifruits suggest that stay-green (SGR) controls the degradation of chlorophylls, while lycopene beta-cyclase (LCY-β) controls the biosynthesis of beta-carotene. The abundance of anthocyanin in the inner pericarps of the ‘Hongyang’ fruit is the results of high expressions of UDP flavonoid glycosyltransferases (UFGT). At the same time, expressions of anthocyanin transcription factors show that AcMYBF110 expression parallels changes in anthocyanin concentration, so seems to be a key R2R3 MYB, regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis. Further, transient color assays reveal that AcMYBF110 can autonomously induce anthocyanin accumulation in Nicotiana tabacum leaves by activating the transcription of dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (NtDFR), anthocyanidin synthase (NtANS) and NtUFGT. For basic helix-loop-helix proteins (bHLHs) and WD-repeat proteins (WD40s), expression differences show these may depend on AcMYBF110 forming a MYB-bHLH-WD40 complex to regulate anthocyanin biosynthesis, instead of it having a direct involvement.

Abstract Background To develop and validate radiomics models for prediction of tumor response to neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) using both pre-NAT and post-NAT multiparameter magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI). Methods In this multicenter study, a total of 563 patients were included from two independent centers. 453 patients from center 1 were split into training and testing cohorts, the remaining 110 from center 2 served as an external validation cohort. Pre-NAT and post-NAT mpMRI was collected for feature extraction. The radiomics models were constructed using machine learning from a training cohort. The accuracy of the models was verified in a testing cohort and an independent external validation cohort. Model performance was evaluated using area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value. Results The model constructed with pre-NAT mpMRI had favorable accuracy for prediction of non-response to NAT in the training cohort (AUC = 0.84), testing cohort (AUC = 0.81), and external validation cohort (AUC = 0.79). The model constructed with both pre-NAT and post-NAT mpMRI had powerful diagnostic value for pathologic complete response in the training cohort (AUC = 0.86), testing cohort (AUC = 0.87), and external validation cohort (AUC = 0.87). Conclusions Models constructed with multiphase and multiparameter MRI were able to predict tumor response to NAT with high accuracy and robustness, which may assist in individualized management of LARC.

Computed tomography (CT) has evolved into an indispensable tool for clinical diagnosis. Reducing radiation dose crucially minimizes adverse effects but may introduce noise and artifacts in reconstructed images, affecting diagnostic processes for physicians. Scholars have tackled deep learning training instability by exploring diffusion models. Given the scarcity of clinical data, we propose the unsupervised image domain score generation model (UISG) for low-dose CT reconstruction. During training, normal-dose CT images are utilized as network inputs to train a score-based generative model that captures the prior distribution of CT images. In the iterative reconstruction, the initial CT image is obtained using a filtered back-projection algorithm. Subsequently, diffusion-based prior, high-frequency convolutional sparse coding prior, and data-consistency steps are employed to obtain the high-quality reconstructed image. Given the global characteristics of noise, the score network of the diffusion model utilizes a swin transformer structure to enhance the model’s ability to capture long-range dependencies. Furthermore, convolutional sparse coding is applied exclusively to the high-frequency components of the image, to prevent over-smoothing or the loss of crucial anatomical details during the denoising process. Quantitative and qualitative results indicate that UISG outperforms competing methods in terms of denoising and generalization performance.

Abstract Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe brain disease associated with a significant risk of suicide. Identification of suicidality is sometimes life-saving for MDD patients. We aimed to explore the use of dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) for suicidality detection in MDD patients. A total of 173 MDD patients, including 48 without suicide risk (NS), 74 with suicide ideation (SI), and 51 having attempted suicide (SA), participated in the present study. Thirty-eight healthy controls were also recruited for comparison. A sliding window approach was used to derive the dFNC, and the K-means clustering method was used to cluster the windowed dFNC. A linear support vector machine was used for classification, and leave-one-out cross-validation was performed for validation. Other machine learning methods were also used for comparison. MDD patients had widespread hypoconnectivity in both the strongly connected states (states 2 and 5) and the weakly connected state (state 4), while the dysfunctional connectivity within the weakly connected state (state 4) was mainly driven by suicidal attempts. Furthermore, dFNC matrices, especially the weakly connected state, could be used to distinguish MDD from healthy controls (area under curve [AUC] = 82), and even to identify suicidality in MDD patients (AUC = 78 for NS vs. SI, AUC = 88 for NS vs. SA, and AUC = 74 for SA vs. SI), with vision-related and default-related inter-network connectivity serving as important features. Thus, the dFNC abnormalities observed in this study might further improve our understanding of the neural substrates of suicidality in MDD patients.

AimWe sought to evaluate the efficacy and safety of conventional transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (cTACE) sequentially combined with systemic treatment by programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitor and anti-angiogenesis tyrosine kinase inhibitor (Anti-angiogenesis TKI) in patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).Materials and methodsOne hundred and forty-seven advanced HCC patients who received PD-1 inhibitors and TKIs as first-line systemic treatment between August 2019 and April 2021 were collected retrospectively. Fifty-four patients were finally included and divided into cTACE and no-cTACE groups, according to whether cTACE treatment was performed within 8 weeks before systemic treatment. The tumor objective response ratio (ORR), progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and adverse events (AEs) were compared between the groups. Significant factors affecting PFS and OS were determined by Cox regression.ResultsThirty-one patients received cTACE followed by systemic treatment and 23 patients received systemic treatment only. The ORRs of the cTACE group were 48.4% (after two cycles of systemic treatment) and 51.6% (after four cycles of systemic treatment), while those of the no-cTACE group were only 17.4% and 21.7%. cTACE patients also had a longer median PFS (11.70 vs. 4.00 months, P = 0.031) and median OS (19.80 vs. 11.6 months, P = 0.006) than no-cTACE patients. Regression analyses indicated that cTACE therapy and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status were independent risk factors for PFS and OS. AEs by type were similar between the cTACE and no-cTACE groups, except for liver function injury, which was more common among cTACE patients. Fourteen patients suffered with grade 1-2 of rash in 21 patients with objective response, while only 10 patients suffered with rash in 33 patients without objective response, the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) was 4.382 (1.297–14.803).ConclusionsThe combination of cTACE and PD-1 inhibitors and anti-angiogenesis TKIs as therapy significantly improved markers of treatment efficacy, including ORR, PFS, and OS, in unresectable HCC patients, while no more serious AEs recorded in this population compared to those receiving systemic treatment alone. Skin rash might be a predict factor to the efficacy of PD-1 inhibitors and TKI treatment.

Abstract Background Previous neurocognitive assessments in non-central nervous system cancers highlight the high incidence of neurocognitive dysfunction in this study population. However, there have been few studies exploring neurocognitive dysfunction induced by chemotherapy in gynecological cancer patients. This prospective longitudinal study was conducted to assess neurocognitive functioning and functional brain networks in Chinese gynecological cancer patients pre- and post-chemotherapy, while additionally including age-matched healthy subjects as the control group. Methods All research participants were evaluated using a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging and neurocognition assessment. Behavioral data were conducted using SPSS for descriptive statistics, correlation and comparison analyses. Preprocessing of MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) data and network analyses were performed using GRETNA (Graph Theoretical Network Analysis). Results A total of 40 subjects joined this study, with 20 subjects in each group. With the exception of the mean of psychomotor speed, there was no significant difference pre-chemotherapy between patients and healthy controls in neurocognitive test mean scores (Ps > 0.05). Patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related cirrhosis (HBV-RC) and minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) exhibit alterations in homotopic inter-hemispheric functional connectivity (FC) and corpus callosum (CC) degeneration. However, the progression of inter-hemispheric dysconnectivity in cirrhotic patients from no MHE (NMHE) to MHE and its association with the progression of diseased-related cognitive impairment remain uncharacterized. We hypothesized that inter-hemispheric dysconnectivity exists in NMHE patients and further deteriorates at the MHE stage, which is associated with performance measured by psychometric hepatic encephalopathy scores (PHES) that can characterize cirrhotic patients with NMHE and MHE. Using inter-hemispheric homotopic FC and CC (and its subfields) volumetric measurements in 31 patients with HBV-RC (17 with NMHE and 14 with MHE) and 37 healthy controls, we verified that MHE patients had significant attenuated inter-hemispheric homotopic FC in the bilateral cuneus, post-central gyrus, inferior parietal lobule, and superior temporal gyms, as well as CC degeneration in total CC, CC2, CC3, and CC4 (each comparison had a corrected P < 0.05). In contrast, NMHE patients had relatively less severe inter-hemispheric homotopic FC and no CC degeneration. In addition, the degeneration of the CC and inter-hemispheric homotopic functional disconnections correlated with poor PHES performances in all cirrhotic patients (NMHE and MHE). Furthermore, impairment of inter-hemispheric homotopic FC partially mediated the association between CC degeneration and worse PHES performance. Notably, a combination of inter-hemispheric homotopic FC and CC volumes had higher discriminative values according to the area under the curve (AUC) score (AUC = 0.908, P < 0.001) to classify patients into MHE or NMHE groups when compared with either alone. Our findings shed light on the progression of inter-hemispheric dysconnectivity in relation to the progression of disease-related cognitive impairment in patients with HBV-RC. Background and purpose: To investigate effects of radiotherapy on normal brain tissue using in vivo neuroimaging in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods and materials: We used longitudinal MRI to monitor structural brain changes during standard radiotherapy in patients newly diagnosed with NPC. We assessed volumetric measures in 63 patients at 2–3 time points before and after radiotherapy, with 20 NPC-free participants as normal controls. Images were processed using validated software (FreeSurfer). Automated results were inspected visually for accuracy. We examined changes in volume of the whole brain, gray matter, white matter, and ventricles, as well as in cerebral volumes partitioned into temporal, frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes. Background: The preoperative diagnosis of phyllodes tumors (PTs) of the breast is critical to appropriate surgical treatment. However, reliable differentiation between PT and fibroadenoma (FA) remains difficult in daily clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the utility of breast MRI texture analysis for differentiating PTs from FAs.Materials and Methods: Forty-two PTs and 42 FAs were enrolled in this retrospective study. Clinical and conventional MRI features (CCMF) and MRI texture analysis were used to distinguish between PT and FA. Texture features were extracted from the axial short TI inversion recovery T2-weighted (T2W-STIR), T1-weighted pre-contrast, and two contrast-enhanced series (first contrast and third contrast). The Mann–Whitney U test was used to select statistically significant features of texture analysis and CCMF. Using a linear discriminant analysis, the most discriminative features were determined from statistically significant features. The K-nearest neighbor classifier and ROC curve were applied to evaluate the diagnostic performance.Results: With a higher classification accuracy (89.3%) and an AUC of 0.89, the texture features on T2W-STIR outperformed the texture features on other MRI sequences and CCMF. The AUC of the combination of CCMF with texture features on T2W-STIR was significantly higher than that of CCMF or texture features on T2W-STIR alone (p < 0.05). Based on the result of the classification accuracy (95.2%) and AUC (0.95), the diagnostic performance of the combination strategy performed better than texture features on T2W-STIR or CCMF separately.Conclusions: Texture features on T2W-STIR showed better diagnostic performance compared to CCMF for the distinction between PTs and FAs. After further validation of multi-institutional large datasets, MRI-based texture features may become a potential biomarker and be a useful medical decision tool in clinical trials having patients with breast fibroepithelial neoplasms.

Background: Increasing evidence indicates that early radiation-induced subtle cerebral changes may be the precursors to permanent brain dysfunction at the late-delayed (LDS) post-radiotherapy (RT) stage. In this study, we aim to track the RT-related longitudinal brain activity in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients and to determine whether early abnormal brain activity can predict late neurocognitive dysfunction after RT.Methods: Thirty-three NPC patients were finally included and longitudinally followed up at the following time points: prior to treatment initiation, early-delayed stage (EDS, 1–3 months), and LDS (six months) after RT. Fifteen comparable healthy controls (HCs) were finally included and followed up in parallel. Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to assess the general cognitive function. Brain activity was recorded via resting-state fMRI and regional homogeneity (ReHo). A whole-brain voxel-wise-based one-way repeated-measure analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to evaluate the longitudinal ReHo changes among the three time points for NPC patients and HCs, respectively. Results were reported at the significant level of a threshold of two-tailed voxel-wise P < 0.01 and cluster level P < 0.05 with Gaussian Random Field (GRF) correction. Finally, the efficacies of the aberrant ReHo at EDS for predicting the cognitive impairment at LDS in NPC patients were evaluated.Results: Significant differences were detected in ReHo among the three time points in NPC patients but not in HCs. Aberrant ReHo was distributed in the bilateral cerebellum, the right temporal lobe, and the left insular areas, which showed different dynamic changes patterns over time. Logistic regression model combining the mean ReHo, age, and irradiation dose on the bilateral temporal lobe had the highest diagnostic efficiency according to the area under the curve (AUC) score (AUC = 0.752, P = 0.023).Conclusions: The post-RT brain activity revealed by ReHo in NPC patients was dynamic, complex, and multifactorial. Furthermore, the combination of the aberrant ReHo at EDS, age, and irradiation dose may serve as a potential biomarker of the RT-induced cognitive impairments at LDS.

BACKGROUND:Little is known about connectivity within the default mode network (DMN) in heroin-dependent individuals (HDIs). In the current study, diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) and resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) were combined to investigate both structural and functional connectivity within the DMN in HDIs. METHODS:Fourteen HDIs and 14 controls participated in the study. Structural (path length, tracts count, (fractional anisotropy) FA and (mean diffusivity) MD derived from DTI tractography)and functional (temporal correlation coefficient derived from rs-fMRI) DMN connectivity changes were examined in HDIs. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to compare the structural/functional indices and duration of heroin use/Iowa gambling task(IGT) performance in HDIs. RESULTS:HDIs had lower FA and higher MD in the tract connecting the posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus (PCC/PCUN) to right parahippocampal gyrus (PHG), compared to the controls. HDIs also had decreased FA and track count in the tract connecting the PCC/PCUN and medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), as well as decreased functional connectivity between the PCC/PCUN and bilateral PHG and MPFC, compared to controls. FA values for the tract connecting PCC/PCUN to the right PHG and connecting PCC/PCUN to the MPFC were negatively correlated to the duration of heroin use. The temporal correlation coefficients between the PCC/PCUN and the MPFC, and the FA values for the tract connecting the PCC/PCUN to the MPFC were positively correlated to IGT performance in HDIs. CONCLUSIONS:Structural and functional connectivity within the DMN are both disturbed in HDIs. This disturbance progresses as duration of heroin use increases and is related to deficits in decision making in HDIs.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cognitive impairment is a well-described phenomenon in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. However, its pathogenesis remains poorly understood. The primary focus of this study was to examine structural and functional brain deficits in ESRD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty ESRD patients on hemodialysis (without clinical neurological disease) and 30 age- and gender-matched control individuals (without renal or neurological problems) were recruited in a prospective, single-center study. High-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and resting state functional MRI were performed on both groups to detect the subtle cerebral deficits in ESRD patients. Voxel-based morphometry was used to characterize gray matter deficits in ESRD patients. The impact of abnormal morphometry on the cerebral functional integrity was investigated by evaluating the alterations in resting state functional connectivity when brain regions with gray matter volume reduction were used as seed areas. RESULTS: A significant decrease in gray matter volume was observed in ESRD patients in the bilateral medial orbito-prefrontal cortices, bilateral dorsal lateral prefrontal cortices, and the left middle temporal cortex. When brain regions with gray matter volume reduction were used as seed areas, the integration was found to be significantly decreased in ESRD patients in the fronto-cerebellum circuits and within prefrontal circuits. In addition, significantly enhanced functional connectivity was found between the prefrontal cortex and the left temporal cortex and within the prefrontal circuits. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that both the structural and functional cerebral cortices were impaired in ESRD patients on routine hemodialysis.

BACKGROUND: In the past twenty years, codeine-containing cough syrups (CCS) was recognized as a new type of addictive drugs. However, the exact neurobiologic mechanisms underlying CCS-dependence are still ill-defined. The aims of this study are to identify CCS-related modulations of neural activity during the resting-state in CCS-dependent individuals and to investigate whether these changes of neural activity can be related to duration of CCS use, the first age of CCS use and impulse control deficits in CCS-dependent individuals. Neuroimaging studies have shown that heroin addiction is related to abnormalities in widespread local regions and in the functional connectivity of the brain. However, little is known about whether heroin addiction changes the topological organization of whole-brain functional networks. Seventeen heroin-dependent individuals (HDIs) and 15 age-, gender-matched normal controls (NCs) were enrolled, and the resting-state functional magnetic resonance images (RS-fMRI) were acquired from these subjects. We constructed the brain functional networks of HDIs and NCs, and compared the between-group differences in network topological properties using graph theory method. We found that the HDIs showed decreases in the normalized clustering coefficient and in small-worldness compared to the NCs. Furthermore, the HDIs exhibited significantly decreased nodal centralities primarily in regions of cognitive control network, including the bilateral middle cingulate gyrus, left middle frontal gyrus, and right precuneus, but significantly increased nodal centralities primarily in the left hippocampus. The between-group differences in nodal centralities were not corrected by multiple comparisons suggesting these should be considered as an exploratory analysis. Moreover, nodal centralities in the left hippocampus were positively correlated with the duration of heroin addiction. Overall, our results indicated that disruptions occur in the whole-brain functional networks of HDIs, findings which may be helpful in further understanding the mechanisms underlying heroin addiction.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the WM microstructure deficits in heroin dependent individuals (HDIs) with different length of heroin dependence, and to investigate whether these WM deficits can be related to the duration of heroin use and to decision-making deficits in HDIs. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Thirty-six HDIs [including eighteen sHDIs (duration of heroin dependent is less than 10 years) and eighteen lHDIs (duration of dependent is between 10:20 years)] and sixteen healthy controls participated in this study. Whole brain voxel-wise analysis of fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (Da) and radial diffusivity (Dr) were performed by tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) to localize abnormal WM regions among groups. TBSS demonstrated that sHDIs had significantly lower FA than controls in right orbito-frontal WM, bilateral temporal WM and right parietal WM. The lHDIs had significantly lower FA throughout the brain compared with the controls and sHDIs. The lHDIs had significantly lower Da than controls in bilateral inferior frontaloccipital fasciculus, bilateral splenium of corpus callosum, left inferior longitudinal fasciculus, and had significantly higher Dr than controls in bilateral uncinatus fasciculus, bilateral inferior frontaloccipital fasciculus and bilateral cortical spinal fasciculus. Volume-of-interest (VOI) analyses detect the changes of diffusivity indices in the regions with FA abnormalities revealed by control vs sHDIs. In most VOIs, FA reductions were caused by the increase in Dr as well as the decrease in Da. Correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship between FA and behavioral measures in HDIs and controls available. Significantly positively correlations were found between the FA values in the right orbital-frontal WM, right parietal WM and IGT performance. CONCLUSIONS: The extent and severity of WM integrity deficits in HDIs was associated with the length of heroin dependent. Furthermore, abnormal WM microstructure may correlate with decision-making impairments in HDIs.
