Objectives Public health workers have been at the forefront of treating patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and managing the pandemic. The redeployment of this workforce has limited or interrupted other public health services, including testing for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This study aims to examine the impact of COVID-19 on HIV testing and diagnosis in the Republic of Korea from 2016 to 2021, comparing data before and after the onset of COVID-19. Methods Annual HIV testing data were collected from each institution through direct communication or from open-source databases. The annual number of new HIV cases was obtained from the official report of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Data on healthcare visits for HIV diagnosis or treatment were extracted from the open-source database of the National Insurance Health Service of Korea. Interrupted time series regression was conducted, stratified by institution type. Results In 2020, HIV tests, diagnoses, and visits decreased. Notably, public health centers experienced a substantial reduction in 2020−2021 compared to previous years. The annual percentage change in HIV tests was −53.0%, while for HIV diagnoses, it was −31.6%. The decrease in visits for HIV was also most pronounced for public facilities: −33.3% in 2020 and −45.6% in 2021 relative to 2019. Conclusion The numbers of tests, diagnoses, and healthcare visits for HIV at public health centers in the Republic of Korea substantially decreased in 2020 and 2021. The impacts of these changes on the early diagnosis and treatment of HIV necessitate further monitoring.

The aim of this review is to consolidate findings from clinical investigations spanning the past decade regarding the impact of acupuncture on Parkinson’s disease (PD). The objective is to assess the efficacy of acupuncture as a therapeutic approach to PD, with the intention of informing future clinical practices and advancing the foundation for subsequent research endeavors in this area. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify clinical trials exploring the effects of acupuncture on PD between January 2014 and August 2023. Databases search included PubMed, EMBASE, CNKI, OASIS, KISS, KMBASE, RISS, and ScienceON. Quantitative evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was systematically reviewed, and the methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using Cochrane’s risk of bias tool. Meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager (RevMan) 5.4.1 software. The systematic review encompassed a total of 38 RCTs involving 2,786 participants. Meta-analysis of 12 studies revealed that individuals treated with a combination of acupuncture and Western medicine exhibited notable improvements compared to those receiving Western medicine alone or sham acupuncture alongside Western medicine. However, the overall quality of the RCTs was deemed low, and no serious adverse events were reported. Across clinical investigations conducted in the past decade, acupuncture appears to hold promise as a complementary treatment for PD patients when administered alongside Western medicine. Nevertheless, this study identifies certain limitations that warrant consideration in future research endeavors. Enhanced emphasis on conducting high-quality RCTs is imperative to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture in managing PD.

The partial nitritation (PN)–anammox (PN/A) process offers a sustainable alternative to nitrogen management in wastewater treatment, addressing the high costs and increasing the low eco-friendliness associated with traditional nitrification/denitrification processes. Stable partial nitritation (PN) is critical for effective PN/A operation, and this study specifically focused on the need to suppress nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) to facilitate the enrichment of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). Utilizing two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), PN1 and PN2 with different free ammonia (FA) concentrations, this study aimed to evaluate the NOB suppression strategy while enriching AOB. The PN2 reactor, which operated with a higher initial FA concentration (50 mg/L), successfully maintained high nitritation activity, with 96.1% ammonium removal efficiency (ARE) and 95.1% nitrite accumulation efficiency (NAE) at reduced influent NH4+-N concentrations (50 mg NH4+-N/L, FA 10 mg/L). In contrast, PN1 showed inadequate NOB suppression due to lower FA concentrations (10 mg/L). These results suggest that initiating the nitritation process with higher FA concentrations can effectively suppress NOB, enhancing the stability and efficiency of PN/A processes in mainstream applications.

Abstract Background Clinical outcome assessments (COAs) are key to patient‐centered evaluation of novel interventions and supportive care. COAs are particularly informative in oncology where a focus on how patients feel and function is paramount, but their incorporation in trial outcomes have lagged that of traditional survival and tumor responses. To understand the trends of COA use in oncology and the impact of landmark efforts to promote COA use, we computationally surveyed oncology clinical trials in ClinicalTrials.gov comparing them to the rest of the clinical research landscape. Methods Oncology trials were identified using medical subject heading neoplasm terms. Trials were searched for COA instrument names obtained from PROQOLID. Regression analyses assessed chronological and design‐related trends. Results Eighteen percent of oncology interventional trials initiated 1985–2020 (N = 35,415) reported using one or more of 655 COA instruments. Eighty‐four percent of the COA‐using trials utilized patient‐reported outcomes, with other COA categories used in 4–27% of these trials. ABSTRACTMgO was added to the SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-ZrO2-based glaze to produce a high-hardness glaze by forming a composite crystal phase. The effects of MgO addition on the surface properties of the glaze were analyzed through crystal phase and microstructural investigations, and the whiteness, roughness, gloss, wear rate, and hardness were measured. When the amount of added MgO increased by 2.20 wt% or more, the diopside (MgCaSi2O6) crystal phase was observed via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), in addition to the zircon (ZrSiO4) crystal phase. All samples exhibited high whiteness and the surface roughness increased with increasing MgO content. At the same time, the gloss decreased significantly, resulting in a matte. The Vickers hardness test results of the glazed surface indicated high hardness values of 6.23–7.07 GPa with increased amounts of MgO.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox)-based process has become a method for achieving carbon-neutral wastewater treatment. However, in mainstream wastewater with a low-strength ammonium, obtaining partial nitritation (PN) for the anammox process can be challenging and often result in NO3– accumulation. The recently proposed partial denitrification (PD), which reduces NO3– back to NO2–, can provide NO2– for anammox. For a successful PD-anammox (PD/A), it is crucial to efficiently cultivate PD bacteria (PDNB) and maintain a balance between the activities of PDNB and anammox bacteria (AnAOB). In this study, an efficient PDNB enrichment was cultivated for a long period of 400 days in a sequential batch reactor (SBR) by feeding it with acetate (300 mg COD/L) and nitrate (100 mg NO3–-N/L) at an exchange ratio of 50 %. The nitrite accumulation efficiency (NAE) gradually increased to >90 %, with Thauera phenylacetica identified as the key species for achieving high NAE. When PDNB was applied with AnAOB to remove 50 mg NH4+-N/L and 50 mg NO3–-N/L, different total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiencies were observed depending on the mixing ratio of PDNB and AnAOB (1:5–1:20). The most rapid and complete TN removal was achieved at the mixing ratio of 1:15. At lower mixing ratios of 1:5 and 1:10, PDNB activity exceeded that of AnAOB, resulting in incomplete TN removal. Conversely, at a higher inoculation ratio of 1:20, AnAOB activity surpassed of PDNB, leading to delayed T-N removal. These results indicate that maintaining a balance between NO2– accumulation by PDNB and NO2– consumption by AnAOB is essential for successful PD/A process operation. The findings of this study can be utilized as fundamental data for the operational strategy of an anammox-based process to achieve a carbon-neutral wastewater treatment.

Abstract Background Many patients with rare diseases are still lacking a timely diagnosis and approved therapies for their condition despite the tremendous efforts of the research community, biopharmaceutical, medical device industries, and patient support groups. The development of clinical research networks for rare diseases offers a tremendous opportunity for patients and multi-disciplinary teams to collaborate, share expertise, gain better understanding on specific rare diseases, and accelerate clinical research and innovation. Clinical Research Networks have been developed at a national or continental level, but global collaborative efforts to connect them are still lacking. The International Rare Diseases Research Consortium set a Task Force on Clinical Research Networks for Rare Diseases with the objective to analyse the structure and attributes of these networks and to identify the barriers and needs preventing their international collaboration. The Task Force created a survey and sent it to pre-identified clinical research networks located worldwide. Results A total of 34 responses were received. The survey analysis demonstrated that clinical research networks are diverse in their membership composition and emphasize community partnerships including patient groups, health care providers and researchers. The sustainability of the networks is mostly supported by public funding. Activities and research carried out at the networks span the research continuum from basic to clinical to translational research studies. Key elements and infrastructures conducive to collaboration are well adopted by the networks, but barriers to international interoperability are clearly identified. These hurdles can be grouped into five categories: funding limitation; lack of harmonization in regulatory and contracting process; need for common tools and data standards; need for a governance framework and coordination structures; and lack of awareness and robust interactions between networks. Conclusions Through this analysis, the Task Force identified key elements that should support both developing and established clinical research networks for rare diseases in implementing the appropriate structures to achieve international interoperability worldwide. A global roadmap of actions and a specific research agenda, as suggested by this group, provides a platform to identify common goals between these networks.

Abstract Hydrogels are used in wound dressings because of their tissue‐like softness and biocompatibility. However, the clinical translation of hydrogels remains challenging because of their long‐term stability, water swellability, and poor tissue adhesiveness. Here, tannic acid (TA) is introduced into a double network (DN) hydrogel consisting of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) to realize a tough, self‐healable, nonswellable, conformally tissue‐adhesive, hemostatic, and antibacterial hydrogel. The TA within the DN hydrogel forms a dynamic network, enabling rapid self‐healing (within 5 min) and offering effective energy dissipation for toughness and viscoelasticity. Furthermore, the hydrophobic moieties of TA provide a water‐shielding effect, rendering the hydrogel nonswellable. A simple chemical modification to the hydrogel further strengthens its interfacial adhesion with tissues (shear strength of ≈31 kPa). Interestingly, the TA also can serve as an effective hemostatic (blood‐clotting index of 58.40 ± 1.5) and antibacterial component, which are required for a successful wound dressing. The antibacterial effects of the hydrogel are tested against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Finally, the hydrogel is prepared in patch form and applied to a mouse model to test in vivo biocompatibility and hemostatic performances.

Abstract Spiral inductors are required to realise high inductance in radio frequency (RF) circuits. Although their fabrication by using micro-electrical–mechanical systems, thin films, actuators, etc., has received considerable research attention, current approaches are both complex and expensive. In this study, we designed and fabricated a thermal spiral inductor by using a three-dimensional (3D) printed shape-memory polymer (SMP). The proposed inductor was inspired by kirigami geometry whereby a two-dimensional (2D) planar geometric shape could be transformed into a 3D spiral one to change the inductance by heating and manually transform. Mechanical and electromagnetic analyses of the spiral inductor design was conducted. Hence, in contrast with the current processes used to manufacture spiral inductors, ours can be realised via a single facile fabrication step.

Abstract The first case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in South Korea was confirmed on January 20, 2020, approximately three weeks after the report of the first COVID-19 case in Wuhan, China. By September 15, 2021, the number of cases in South Korea had increased to 277,989. Thus, it is important to better understand geographical transmission and design effective local-level pandemic plans across the country over the long term. We conducted a spatiotemporal analysis of weekly COVID-19 cases in South Korea from February 1, 2020, to May 30, 2021, in each administrative region. For the spatial domain, we first covered the entire country and then focused on metropolitan areas, including Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Incheon. Moran’s I and spatial scan statistics were used for spatial analysis. The temporal variation and dynamics of COVID-19 cases were investigated with various statistical visualization methods. We found time-varying clusters of COVID-19 in South Korea using a range of statistical methods. In the early stage, the spatial hotspots were focused in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do. Then, metropolitan areas were detected as hotspots in December 2020. In our study, we conducted a time-varying spatial analysis of COVID-19 across the entirety of South Korea over a long-term period and found a powerful approach to demonstrating the current dynamics of spatial clustering and understanding the dynamic effects of policies on COVID-19 across South Korea. Additionally, the proposed spatiotemporal methods are very useful for understanding the spatial dynamics of COVID-19 in South Korea.

Abstract Developing bioelectronics that retains their long‐term functionalities in the human body during daily activities is a current critical issue. To accomplish this, robust tissue adaptability and biointerfacing of bioelectronics should be achieved. Hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for bioelectronics that can softly adapt to and interface with tissues. However, hydrogels lack toughness, requisite electrical properties, and fabrication methodologies. Additionally, the water‐swellable property of hydrogels weakens their mechanical properties. In this work, an intrinsically nonswellable multifunctional hydrogel exhibiting tissue‐like moduli ranging from 10 to 100 kPa, toughness (400–873 J m−3), stretchability (≈1000% strain), and rapid self‐healing ability (within 5 min), is developed. The incorporation of carboxyl‐ and hydroxyl‐functionalized carbon nanotubes (fCNTs) ensures high conductivity of the hydrogel (≈40 S m−1), which can be maintained and recovered even after stretching or rupture. After a simple chemical modification, the hydrogel shows tissue‐adhesive properties (≈50 kPa) against the target tissues. Moreover, the hydrogel can be 3D printed with a high resolution (≈100 µm) through heat treatment owing to its shear‐thinning capacity, endowing it with fabrication versatility. The hydrogel is successfully applied to underwater electromyography (EMG) detection and ex vivo bladder expansion monitoring, demonstrating its potential for practical bioelectronics.

Healthcare personnel (HCP) are vulnerable to COVID-19 infection due to their higher risk of contact with infected persons. The numbers of cases and deaths among HCP in Korea were divided into four periods associated with different major variants of SARS-CoV-2: GH clade, Alpha, Delta, and Omicron. To evaluate the implication of HCP infection in Korea, we overviewed the pandemic status in Korea and in other countries: the cases, deaths, excess mortality, and vaccination rates in Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In about two years, there were 10,670 HCP cases among all COVID-19 cases (1.15% of 925,975 cases). HCP cases had a lower death rate (%) compared to that for all cases (0.14 versus 0.75). Nurses were the most infected (55.3%), followed by HCP of other categories (28.8%) and doctors (15.9%), while deaths were mostly reported among doctors (9 out of 15, 60%). Cases among HCP gradually increased, but the death rate decreased as the pandemic progressed. Compared to five of the other countries examined, Korea had a higher incidence of cases but a lower mortality, lower excess mortality, and a higher vaccination rate.

The variant B.1.1.7 of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the RNA virus causing the pandemic more than a year worldwide, was reported from United Kingdom (UK) in late December 2020. It was reported that mortality increases by 65% and transmissibility increases by 70%, which may result in an increase of reproduction number to 1.13-1.55 from 0.75-0.85. To analyze the global increasing trend of the variant B.1.1.7, we extracted results of B.1.1.7 from GISAID on May 11 and May 12, 2021, and conducted a dose-response regression. It took 47 days to reach 20% and 121 days to reach 50% among the sequence submitted from UK. In Korea, cases of B.1.1.7 have increased since the first report of three cases on December 28, 2020. Positive rate of B.1.1.7 in Korea was 21.6% in the week from May 9 to May 15, 2021. Detection rate of the variants is expected to increase further and new variants of SARS-CoV-2 are emerging, so a close monitoring and control would be maintained for months.

Objectives:It is important to enrich and cultivate ammonia oxidation bacteria (AOB) in order to successfully treat nitrogen in high saline wastewater using a deammonification process. Two different inocula, a sewage sludge and a fish-market wastewater sludge, were cultivated to enrich AOB and compared the changes of microbial community. Methods:A sequential batch reactor (SBR) inoculated with the sewage sludge (PN1) enriched AOB under high-strength ammonium condition (500-3,000 mg NH4+-N/L) and then the salt concentration in the medium was gradually increased up to 20 g-NaCl/L. The other SBR seeded with the fish market wastewater sludge (PN2) was operated to enrich AOB directly under 20 g NaCl/L without any acclimation step. Results and Discussion:Both PN1 and PN2 successfully showed more than 60% of the nitrite accumulation efficiency at a high saline concentration of 20 g NaCl/L. At the level of the phylum, Proteobacteria containing nitrifying microorganisms became dominant in both PN1 and PN2. However, the most dominant bacterial species in PN1 and PN2 were Nitrosomonas eutropha (60.7%) and N. halophila (20.2%), respectively. Conclusions:Although different results of the most abundant AOB were shown in both sewage sludge and fish-market wastewater sludge conditions, nitritation was successfully developed even with wastewater containing high salinity. Therefore, in this study, both sludges can be applied for inoculation to the PN process for efficiently treating wastewater with high concentration of ammonium and saline.

In recent years, replacing the external control stimuli with internal control using characteristics of radio frequency (RF) signals (such as waveform or power level) has attracted considerable attention to the design of reconfigurable multifunctional RF devices. However, even with the most exciting techniques, the control process always needs a chip-based system to sense the power level or waveform of the incident RF signal, which is realised by additional supporting electronic components of the sensing and microcontroller circuits. Therefore, to achieve a batteryless structure, a majority of conventional works focus on using energy harvesters to convert energy from external environmental sources to DC energy for the electronic circuits. Herein, we propose a novel alternative approach to replace the traditional energy harvesters in batteryless RF devices with all-passive energy smart-sensing circuits. By exploiting the features of a nonlinear semiconductor device under different incident RF power values, the proposed network can passively self-sense the RF power level and dynamically self-control RF signal flow and power ratio. The operation of the proposed network can be considered as purely self-adaptation with control from the RF power level. Moreover, normal RF devices can be transformed to all-passive and batteryless purely self-reconfigurable devices via integration with the proposed structure. As proof of concept, the proposed network is integrated with a two-port antenna to experimentally demonstrate its purely self-reconfigurable polarisation. The proposed strategy is hereby expected to extend the field of batteryless self-reconfigurable multifunctional RF devices and pave promising new paths for the development of future intelligent, smart RF devices.

Recent discoveries of extreme cellular diversity in the brain warrant rapid development of technologies to access specific cell populations within heterogeneous tissue. Available approaches for engineering-targeted technologies for new neuron subtypes are low yield, involving intensive transgenic strain or virus screening. Here, we present Specific Nuclear-Anchored Independent Labeling (SNAIL), an improved virus-based strategy for cell labeling and nuclear isolation from heterogeneous tissue. SNAIL works by leveraging machine learning and other computational approaches to identify DNA sequence features that confer cell type-specific gene activation and then make a probe that drives an affinity purification-compatible reporter gene. As a proof of concept, we designed and validated two novel SNAIL probes that target parvalbumin-expressing (PV+) neurons. Nuclear isolation using SNAIL in wild-type mice is sufficient to capture characteristic open chromatin features of PV+ neurons in the cortex, striatum, and external globus pallidus. The SNAIL framework also has high utility for multispecies cell probe engineering; expression from a mouse PV+ SNAIL enhancer sequence was enriched in PV+ neurons of the macaque cortex. Expansion of this technology has broad applications in cell type-specific observation, manipulation, and therapeutics across species and disease models.

Despite the low cost and easy fabrication afforded by 3D printing technology, high dielectric loss of the 3D printing filament degrades the performance of 3D printed radio frequency electronics at high frequencies. In this paper, we propose a 3D-printed substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) using a lossy polylactic acid or polylactide (PLA) filament. To minimize the insertion loss of the SIW, a non-uniform honeycomb is 3D-printed as the dielectric material of the SIW. The non-uniform honeycomb-shaped substrate is composed of large unit cells, which achieve low insertion loss (0.01 dB/mm) because of the low volume of the dielectric material. The performance characteristics of the proposed SIW is compared with those of SIWs made of solid and uniform honeycomb-shaped structures. The average insertion loss of the microstrip line-fed SIW with the proposed non-uniform honeycomb substrate is 0.92 dB in the frequency range of 1.97 to 3.35 GHz and those of the solid PLA and uniform honeycomb substrates are 2.49 dB and 1.38 dB, respectively. The proposed 3D-printed SIW additionally has the advantages of light weight and low cost.

This paper proposes a millimeter-wave lens antenna using 3-dimensional (3D) printing technology to reduce weight and provide stable gain performance. The antenna consists of a four-layer cylindrical gradient-index (GRIN) lens fed by a wideband Yagi antenna. We designed a fractal cell geometry to achieve the desired effective permittivity for a GRIN lens. Among different candidates, the honeycomb structure is chosen to provide high mechanical strength with light weight, low dielectric loss, and lens dispersion for a lens antenna. Therefore, the measured peak gain was relatively flat at 16.86 ± 0.5 dBi within 25−31.5 GHz, corresponding to 1 dB gain bandwidth = 23%. The proposed 3D-printed GRIN lens is cost-effective, with rapid and easy manufacturing.

BackgroundPatients with parkinsonism have higher inactivity levels than the general population, and this results in increased comorbidities. Although exercise has benefits for motor function and quality of life (QOL) in patients with parkinsonism, these patients face many barriers to exercise participation, such as lack of motivation, fatigue, depression, and time constraints. Recently, the use of mobile apps has been highlighted as a remote exercise management strategy for patients with chronic diseases. ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate the effects of home-based exercise management with a customized mobile app on the exercise amount, physical activity, and QOL of patients with parkinsonism. MethodsThis was a prospective, open-label, single-arm pilot study. The therapist installed the app in the smartphones of the participants and educated them on how to use the app. The therapist developed an individualized multimodal exercise program that consisted of stretching, strengthening, aerobic, balance and coordination, and oral-motor and vocal exercises. Participants were encouraged to engage in an 8-week home-based exercise program delivered through a customized app. The alarm notifications of the app provided reminders to exercise regularly at home. The primary outcome was the exercise amount. The secondary outcomes were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire-39 (PDQ-39), and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). The usability of the customized app was assessed using a self-report questionnaire. ResultsA total of 21 participants with parkinsonism completed the intervention and assessment between September and December 2020 (mean age: 72 years; women: 17/21, 81%; men: 4/21, 19%). Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is a biological nitrogen removal process with attractive prospects, such as no carbon addition, less aeration, lower greenhouse gas generation, and lower sludge production. However, it is difficult to maintain a stable anammox process since the anammox bacteria have a slow growth rate and high sensitivity to many factors. Therefore, it is very important to analyze and maintain the anammox activity as a process indicator for its successful operation. The conventional method for measuring the concentration of nitrogen compounds, such as ammonium, nitrite, or nitrogen gas is inconvenient during the reaction time for specific anammox activity (SAA) analysis, which can result in an inaccurately determined SAA due to the substrate loss and temperature change. In this study, a respirometer was utilized to analyze the SAA. The SAA values from a respirometer (rSAA) showed a similar pattern to the SAA values (mSAA) from the conventional method. All of the SAA analyses showed the highest value at 35 °C with a granule size of p-values for the t-test and Wilcoxon rank-sum test were >0.05. Therefore, the respirometer can be used as a simple and efficient tool for SAA analysis. Moreover, the operating maintenance and management of the anammox process can be improved due to the simple SAA analysis in the field.

Supported metal nanoparticles hold great promise for many fields, including catalysis and renewable energy. Here the authors report a novel methodology for the in-situ growth of architecturally tailored, regenerative metal nanocatalysts that is applicable to a wide range of materials.

Divalent cations were known to alleviate salinity stress on anammox bacteria. Understanding the mechanism of reducing the salinity stress on anammox granules is essential for the application of the anammox process for saline wastewater treatment. In this study, the effect of Ca2+ and Mg2+ augmentation on the recovery of the activity of freshwater anammox granules affected by salinity stress was evaluated. At the condition of a salinity stress of 5 g NaCl/L, the specific anammox activity (SAA) of the granule decreased to 50% of that of the SAA without NaCl treatment. Augmentation of Ca2+ at the optimum concentration of 200 mg/L increased the SAA up to 78% of the original activity, while the augmentation of Mg2+ at the optimum concentration of 70 mg/L increased the SAA up to 71%. EPS production in the granules was increased by the augmentation of divalent cations compared with the granules affected by salinity stress. In the soluble EPS, the ratio of protein to polysaccharides was higher in the granules augmented by Ca2+ than with Mg2+, and the functional groups of the EPS differed from each other. The amount of Na+ sequestered in the soluble EPS was increased by the augmentation of divalent cations, which seems to contribute to the alleviation of salinity stress. Ca. Kuenenia-like anammox bacteria, which were known to be salinity stress-tolerant, were predominant in the granules and there was no significant difference in the microbial community of the granules by the salinity stress treatment. Our results suggest that the alleviation effect of the divalent cations on the salinity stress on the anammox granules might be associated with the increased production of different EPS rather than in changes to the anammox bacteria.

This paper proposes a gain-enhanced metamaterial (MM) absorber-loaded monopole antenna that reduces both radar cross-section and back radiation. To demonstrate the proposed idea, we designed a wire monopole antenna and an MM absorber. The MM absorber comprised lumped elements of subwavelength unit cells and achieved 90% absorbance bandwidth from 2.42−2.65 GHz. For low-profile configurations, the MM absorber was loaded parallel to and 10 mm from the monopole antenna, corresponding to 0.09 λ0 at 2.7 GHz. The monopole antenna resonated at 2.7 GHz with a 3.71 dBi peak gain and 2.65 GHz and 6.46 dBi peak gain, before and after loading the MM absorber, respectively. Therefore, including the MM absorber increased peak gain by 2.7 dB and reduced back radiation by 15 dB. The proposed antenna radar cross-section was reduced by 2 dB compared with a monopole antenna with an artificial magnetic conductor.

In this paper, we propose a bi-directional loop antenna array using magic cube origami. The proposed antenna array consists of three one-wavelength loop antenna elements with series feeding. Each loop antenna is realized on a single magic cube, and three cubes are connected in series to form the array. The three cubes can be easily folded and unfolded due to being constructed in the form of a magic cube origami. Antenna volume can be minimized for high mobility by folding the array, which radiates a bi-directional pattern with full volume when unfolded. The proposed antenna was designed at 1.39 GHz. When the single antenna is realized on the single cube, the peak gain is 4.03 dBi. The peak gain increased to 5.2 and 5.53 dBi with two and three antennas, respectively. Half-power beam width (HPBW) with three antenna elements decreased to 40° from 360° compared to the HPBW with the single antenna. The proposed antenna performance was assessed numerically and experimentally.

This article proposes a low-loss and light 3D-printed substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW). Despite the use of lossy polylactic acid (PLA) material, insertion loss is reduced, and bandwidth is increased due to a honeycomb substrate similar to air. To demonstrate the proposed concept, we fabricated microstrip-fed SIWs with solid PLA and honeycomb substrates, and compared their performance numerically and experimentally. Average measured insertion loss from 3.4 to 5.5 GHz for the honeycomb SIW is 1.38 dB, whereas SIW with solid PLA is 3.15 dB. Light weight is an additional advantage of the proposed structure.

Changes in lifestyle including obesity epidemic and reduced physical activity influenced greatly to increase the cancer burden in Korea. The purpose of the current study was to perform a systematic assessment of cancers attributable to obesity and physical inactivity in Korea.Gender- and cancer site-specific population-attributable fractions (PAF) were estimated using the prevalence of overweight and obesity in 1992-1995 from a large-scale prospective cohort study, the prevalence of low physical activity in 1989 from a Korean National Health Examination Survey, and pooled relative risk estimates from Korean epidemiological studies. The overall PAF was then estimated using 2009 national cancer incidence data from the Korea Central Cancer Registry. Excess body weight was responsible for 1,444 (1.5%) and 2,004 (2.2%) cancer cases among men and women, respectively, in 2009 in Korea. Among men, 6.8% of colorectal, 2.9% of pancreatic, and 16.0% of kidney cancer was attributable to excess body weight. In women, 6.6% of colorectal, 3.9% of pancreatic, 18.7% of kidney, 8.2% of postmenopausal breast, and 32.7% of endometrial cancer was attributable to excess body weight. Low leisure-time physical activity accounted for 8.8% of breast cancer, whereas the PAF for overall cancer was low (0.1% in men, 1.4% in women). Projections suggest that cancers attributable to obesity will increase by 40% in men and 16% in women by 2020.With a significantly increasing overweight and physically inactive population, and increasing incidence of breast and colorectal cancers, Korea faces a large cancer burden attributable to these risk factors. Had the obese population of Korea remained stable, a large portion of obesity-related cancers could have been avoided. Efficient cancer prevention programs that aim to reduce obesity- and physical inactivity-related health problems are essential in Korea.

Circulating, cell-free microRNAs (miRNAs) are promising candidate biomarkers, but optimal conditions for processing blood specimens for miRNA measurement remain to be established. Our previous work showed that the majority of plasma miRNAs are likely blood cell-derived. In the course of profiling lung cancer cases versus healthy controls, we observed a broad increase in circulating miRNA levels in cases compared to controls and that higher miRNA expression correlated with higher platelet and particle counts. We therefore hypothesized that the quantity of residual platelets and microparticles remaining after plasma processing might impact miRNA measurements. To systematically investigate this, we subjected matched plasma from healthy individuals to stepwise processing with differential centrifugation and 0.22 µm filtration and performed miRNA profiling. We found a major effect on circulating miRNAs, with the majority (72%) of detectable miRNAs substantially affected by processing alone. Specifically, 10% of miRNAs showed 4-30x variation, 46% showed 30-1,000x variation, and 15% showed >1,000x variation in expression solely from processing. This was predominantly due to platelet contamination, which persisted despite using standard laboratory protocols. Importantly, we show that platelet contamination in archived samples could largely be eliminated by additional centrifugation, even in frozen samples stored for six years. To minimize confounding effects in microRNA biomarker studies, additional steps to limit platelet contamination for circulating miRNA biomarker studies are necessary. We provide specific practical recommendations to help minimize confounding variation attributable to plasma processing and platelet contamination.
