6. Design and synthesis of dual polarized millimetre wave array antennas for advanced wireless communications

Abstract

The millimetre-wave (mmWave) antenna arrays in traditional designs are usually very complicated, bulky and expensive. They suffer compromised radiation efficiency because of high insertion loss caused by the intricate feed networks. In addition, the cross polarization level is degraded, especially for the multibeam antenna arrays. To reduce the complexity and improve the electric characteristics, it is significant to develop mmWave antenna arrays with multi-functionality such as dual polarization, cross polarization suppression, beam switching and power splitting/combining, etc. In this thesis, four designs of sub-mmWave and mmWave dual polarized antenna arrays with low complexity, compact size and good electrical performance are proposed. Firstly, a dual slant polarized cavity-backed slot-coupled patch antenna arrays with modified feed networks is developed. This antenna array features high XPD, simple structure and low profile. Then, a dual polarized 2D multibeam shorted-patch antenna array with high XPD when beams scan to the maximum pointing angles is developed. Differential feed technique is used to design the multibeam antenna array for the first time. The third design is a dual polarized frequency-scanning cross slot antenna array realized on a single laminate. To enable high port isolation and excitation from orthogonal directions, a SIW crossover is proposed. This antenna array shows advantages in terms of low complexity, high XPD, high aperture efficiency and wide beam scanning range. A dual polarized slot-coupled patch antenna array differentially fed by an orthomode transducer is developed in the last design. The feed networks are taken into consideration of designing the subarray antenna. The via-loaded crossover is used to enable structure simplification and triple resonance is excited to improve operation bandwidth. This antenna array features low complexity, high XPD, high radiation efficiency, high gain and high integration. In this thesis, the design methods and synthesis procedures are detailed in order to deliver a comprehensive guide of designing the dual polarized antenna arrays. The design concept and outcomes of these antenna arrays are evaluated in the high frequency fullwave solver. All of the antenna arrays are prototyped and measured for validating the simulations. The measurements are in good agreement with the simulations, evidencing that the proposed antenna arrays have advantages in terms of high XPD, high aperture efficiency, high port isolation, low complexity and low profile. The design concepts depicted in this thesis and the developed antenna arrays could find potential applications in mobile communication systems and satellite communication systems.

Abstract

Background: Previous research has shown an association between migraine and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, limited studies have explored the progression of cardiovascular health (CVH) among individuals with migraine. This cohort study aimed to explore the relationship between changes in CVH and migraine among women of Chinese descent in Hong Kong. Method: Data from a cohort study titled "Migraine Exposures and Cardiovascular Health in Hong Kong Chinese Women (MECH-HK)" were analysed. A total of 2,603 women, averaging 56.5 ± 8.5 years of age, were selected, all with complete data at baseline and at a follow-up occurring on average 1.27 years later. CVH profile was assessed by an adapted Life's Essential 8, comprising dietary habits, physical activity, nicotine exposure, sleep duration, body mass index (BMI), lipid levels, blood pressure, and stress. Each component was scored from 0 to 100, with overall CVH as the average. CVH levels were categorized as low (0–49), moderate (50–79), and high (80–100), representing poor to excellent health. Changes in CVH were defined as shifts between these categories from baseline to subsequent follow-up. Migraine cases were identified utilizing the International Classification of Headache Disorders 3. Result: A total of 275 (10.6%) women were identified as having migraine. By follow-up, both women with and without migraine experienced significant declines in CVH profiles (all p-value < 0.05). In the fully adjusted model, women with migraine had a 1.36 times higher risk (OR 95% CI: 1.33, 1.39) of decline in overall CVH compared to non-migraineurs. They also had a higher likelihood of shifting to worse CVH levels in several individual CVH components, including physical activity (OR: 1.09), nicotine exposure (OR: 4.27), sleep quality (OR: 1.80), blood lipid levels (OR: 1.03), and stress (OR: 1.23) (all p-value < 0.05). Among women with migraine, those experiencing aura had a higher risk of poorer physical activity, greater nicotine exposure, higher BMI, and increased stress than those without aura (all p-value < 0.05). Conclusion: Women with migraine exhibited worse progression in CVH compared to those without migraine. Targeted monitoring and management of CVH-related factors in this population are crucial to reducing their elevated risk of CVDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

19. Sestrin2 and Sestrin3 protect spermatogenesis against heat-induced meiotic defects†

Abstract

Heat stress induces testicular oxidative stress, impairs spermatogenesis, and increases the risk of male infertility. Recent studies have highlighted the antioxidative properties of the Sestrins family in reducing cellular oxidative damage. However, the role of Sestrins (Sestrin1, 2, and 3) in the testicular response to heat stress remains unclear. Here, we found that Sestrin2 and 3 were highly expressed in the testis relative to Sestrin1. Then, the Sestrin2−/−and Sestrin3−/−mice were generated by CRISPR/Cas9 to investigate the role of them on spermatogenesis after heat stress. Our data showed that Sestrin2−/−and Sestrin3−/−mice testes exhibited more severe damage manifested by exacerbated loss of germ cells and higher levels of oxidative stress as compared to wild-type counterparts after heat stress. Notably, Sestrin2−/−and Sestrin3−/−mice underwent a remarkable increase in heat-induced spermatocyte apoptosis than that of controls. Furthermore, the transcriptome landscape of spermatocytes and chromosome spreading showed that loss of Sestrin2and Sestrin3exacerbated meiotic failure by compromising DNA double-strand breaks repair after heat stress. Taken together, our work demonstrated a critical protective function of Sestrin2 and Sestrin3 in mitigating the impairments of spermatogenesis against heat stress.Summary SentenceSestrin2 and Sestrin3 play an important role in safeguarding spermatogenesis against heat-induced meiotic defects, highlighting their importance in preserving male fertility after heat stress.Graphical Abstract

Abstract

Breast cancer (BC), characterized by high heterogeneity, is the most commonly reported malignancy among females across the globe. Every year, many BC patients die owing to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Increasing researches have indicated that aberrantly expressed circular RNAs (circRNAs) are implicated in the tumorigenesis and progression of various tumors, including BC. Hence, this article provides a summary of the biogenesis and functions of circRNAs, as well as an examination of how circRNAs regulate the progression of BC. Moreover, circRNAs have aroused incremental attention as potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers for BC. Exosomes enriched with circRNAs can be secreted into the tumor microenvironment to mediate intercellular communication, affecting the progression of BC. Detecting the expression levels of exosomal circRNAs may provide reference for BC diagnosis and prognosis prediction. Illuminating insights into the earlier diagnosis and better treatment regimens of BC will be potentially available following elucidation of deeper regulatory mechanisms of circRNAs in this malignancy. Abstract

Recent advances highlight the pivotal role of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) in ovarian aging. However, the roles of de novo NAD+ biosynthesis on ovarian aging are still unknown. Here, we found that genetic ablation of Ido1 (indoleamine‐2,3‐dioxygenase 1) or Qprt (Quinolinate phosphoribosyl transferase), two critical genes in de novo NAD+ biosynthesis, resulted in decreased ovarian NAD+ levels in middle‐aged mice, leading to subfertility, irregular estrous cycles, reduced ovarian reserve, and accelerated aging. Moreover, we observed impaired oocyte quality, characterized by increased reactive oxygen species and spindle anomalies, which ultimately led to reduced fertilization ability and impaired early embryonic development. A transcriptomic analysis of ovaries in both mutant and wild‐type mice revealed alterations in gene expression related to mitochondrial metabolism. Our findings were further supported by the observation of impaired mitochondrial distribution and decreased mitochondrial membrane potential in the oocytes of knockout mice. Supplementation with nicotinamide riboside (NR), an NAD+ booster, in mutant mice increased ovarian reserve and improved oocyte quality.
