An elastic masterbatch and elastic melt blown nonwovens are prepared based successively on styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) and polypropylene (PP) blend. The phase separation morphology, rheological properties and crystal structure of the elastic masterbatch are investigated. The results show that a compatible and stable structure is obtained in molten SEBS and PP blend with excellent mobility in the temperature range of 210–230C. The crystallization of PP slows down resulting in a finer structure due to the restriction of the SEBS network structure with rarely change of crystalline structure. The relationship between process parameters and properties of the elastic nonwoven is also studied in detail. Air pressure and die to collector distance (DCD) have discernible effects on fiber diameter and bonding between fibers, further influencing the performances of nonwovens including porosity, tensile strength and elastic recovery. Elastic recovery is shown to be significantly more affected by DCD than by air pressure.

Most critically ill patients experience malnutrition, resulting in a poor prognosis. This study aimed to evaluate the association of prealbumin (PAB) with the prognosis for severely and critically ill coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and explore factors related to this association. Patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 from West Campus of Union Hospital in Wuhan from January 29, 2020 to March 31, 2020 were enrolled in this study. Patients were classified into the PAB1 (150–400 mg/L; N = 183) and PAB2 (< 150 mg/L; N = 225) groups. Data collection was performed using the hospital’s electronic medical records system. The predictive value of PAB was evaluated by measuring the area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve. Patients were defined as severely or critically ill based on the Guidance for COVID-19 (7th edition) by the National Health Commission of China. During this analysis, 316 patients had severe cases and 65 had critical cases. A reduced PAB level was associated with a higher risk of mortality and a longer hospital stay. The AUROC curve for the prognosis based on the PAB level was 0.93, with sensitivity of 97.2% and specificity of 77.6%. For severe cases, a lower level of PAB was associated with a higher risk of malnutrition, higher NK cell counts, and lower B lymphocyte counts; these factors were not significant in critical cases. C-reactive protein and nutritional status mediated the association between PAB and prognosis. This retrospective analysis suggests that the PAB level on admission is an indicator of the prognosis for COVID-19.

Background miR-363-3p, the retinoid signaling pathway (RSP), and its associated membrane receptor, stimulated by retinoic acid 6 (STRA6), participate in lung development. We hypothesize that miR-363-3p is involved in lung cell proliferation and apoptosis by regulating the expression of STRA6, and this study was designed to investigate the effect of changes in the expressions of miR-363-3p and the STRA6 gene on the proliferation and apoptosis of rat alveolar type II cells. Methods To confirm our hypothesis, we used: a dual-luciferase reporter assay; cell culture and transfection; real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR); Western blotting; a cell proliferation assay and flow cytometry analysis of the cell cycle, cell apoptosis, oxidative stress level, and mitochondrial membrane potential. Results Our results showed that STRA6 is a target gene for miR-363-3p, and when the expression of miR-363-3p increased, the relative messenger RNA (mRNA) expression of STRA6 decreased, which caused a decrease in STRA6 protein synthesis and subsequent inhibition of rat lung alveolar type II cell proliferation. In contrast, inhibiting the expression of miR-363-3p promoted the proliferation of these cells. This study also found that an increased expression of miR-363-3p induced rat lung alveolar type II cell apoptosis led to an increase in the oxidative stress level, decreased mitochondrial membrane potential, and an inducement of G1-phase cell cycle arrest. Conclusions In conclusion, miR-363-3p is associated with lung cell proliferation and apoptosis, while miR-363-3p inhibits rat lung alveolar type II cell proliferation by downregulating the expression of STRA6 and induces cell apoptosis by increasing cellular oxidative stress and G1-phase cell cycle arrest.

As wearable electronic devices have become commonplace in daily life, great advances in wearable strain sensors occurred in various fields including healthcare, robotics, virtual reality and other sectors. In this work, a highly stretchable and sensitive strain sensor based on electrospun styrene-ethylene-butene-styrene copolymer (SEBS) yarn modified by dopamine (DA) and coated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was reported. Due to the process of twisting, a strain senor stretched to a strain of 1095.8% while exhibiting a tensile strength was 20.03 MPa. The strain sensor obtained a gauge factor (GF of 1.13 × 105) at a maximum strain of 215%. Concurrently, it also possessed good stability, repeatability and durability under different strain ranges, stretching speeds and 15,000 stretching-releasing cycles. Additionally, the strain sensor exhibited robust washing fastness under an ultrasonic time of 120 min at 240 W and 50 Hz. Furthermore, it had a superior sensing performance in monitoring joint motions of the human body. The high sensitivity and motion sensing performance presented here demonstrate that PDA@SEBS/MWNCTs yarn has great potential to be used as components of wearable devices.

High-performance electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding material that that can function properly under extreme working conditions is critical for their practical applications. Herein, flexible and highly conductive meta-aramid (PMIA) nonwoven fabrics were fabricated by combining polydopamine (PDA) modification and electroless silver plating. The PDA modification greatly enhanced the efficient deposition of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and the interfacial cohesion between the AgNPs and the PMIA fibers. The silver-coated PMIA nonwoven fabric exhibited an electrical conductivity as high as 0.29 Ω/sq, an excellent EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 92.6 dB and a high absolute EMI SE of 8194.7 dB cm2 g−1. In addition, the silver-coated PMIA nonwoven fabric maintained high electrical conductivity and EMI SE after being subjected to washing, bending and torsion deformations, high/low temperature, strong acidic/alkaline solutions and different organic solvents. These results have clearly demonstrated that PMIA nonwoven fabric can be made highly electrically conductive by using a simple and highly scalable method. It holds great promise for the applications in EMI shielding materials that can be used in various harsh conditions.

Electrical heaters with rapid response, robust mechanical properties, and reliable chemical stability are highly desirable to meet the requirements for the development of high-performance heating systems that can be used in extreme conditions. Herein, highly conductive silver nanoparticle (AgNPs)-functionalized aramid fiber paper (AFP)-based electrical heaters were fabricated through an efficient plasma treatment and electroless plating method. The AFP/AgNPs show outstanding electrical conductivity with electrical resistance as low as 0.047 Ω/sq and maintain high electrical conductivity after 20 washing cycles and 1000 bending cycles. The AFP/AgNP-based electrical heater could reach a temperature of about 210 °C at a low voltage of 1 V with a rapid response time of 20 s. The electrical heater also exhibited sufficient heating reliability, stability, and repeatability in the long term (up to 10,000 s) and for 180 repeated heating and cooling cycles. Moreover, the electrical heaters maintain satisfactory heating performances even after being treated with acid/alkali solutions and various organic solvents. The overall performance of AFP/AgNP-based electrical heaters has been demonstrated in the application of water heating and ice melting, indicating their great potential for high-performance heating systems that can be used in various harsh conditions.

BACKGROUND: The nutrition status of coronavirus disease 2019 patients is unknown. This study evaluates clinical and nutrition characteristics of severely and critically ill patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and investigates the relationship between nutrition risk and clinical outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective, observational study was conducted at West Campus of Union Hospital in Wuhan. Patients confirmed with SARS-CoV-2 infection by a nucleic acid-positive test and identified as severely or critically ill were enrolled in this study. Clinical data and outcomes information were collected and nutrition risk was assessed using Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS). RESULTS: In total, 413 patients were enrolled in this study, including 346 severely and 67 critically ill patients. Most patients, especially critically ill patients, had significant changes in nutrition-related parameters and inflammatory markers. As for nutrition risk, the critically ill patients had significantly higher proportion of high NRS scores (P < .001), which were correlated with inflammatory and nutrition-related markers. Among 342 patients with NRS score ≥3, only 84 (of 342, 25%) received nutrition support. Critically ill patients and those with higher NRS score had a higher risk of mortality and longer stay in hospital. In logistic regression models, 1-unit increase in NRS score was associated with the risk of mortality increasing by 1.23 times (adjusted odds ratio, 2.23; 95% CI, 1.10-4.51; P = .026). CONCLUSIONS: Most severely and critically ill patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 are at nutrition risk. The patients with higher nutrition risk have worse outcome and require nutrition therapy.

In this work, a new kind of composite nanofiber-based strain sensor with superior electromechanical properties was fabricated by using aligned thermal plastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofibers coated with multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In order to improve the deposition efficiency and the fastness of CNTs coating on TPU nanofibers, bio-inspired dopamine (DA) was employed to modify the surface of the TPU nanofiber via a fast deposition method. (The composite nanofibers obtained were denoted as DATPU.) The electromechanical tests showed that DATPU/CNTs nanofiber membrane had a wide linear working range of 370% in the direction parallel to the nanofibers (P-DATPU/CNTs), a high gauge factor of 22.0 and a high linear coefficient of determination (r2) of 0.997. P-DATPU/CNTs nanofibers also exhibited excellent durability during stretching–releasing test for 5000 cycles. The P-DATPU/CNTs composite nanofibers demonstrated high sensing performance in detecting human motions of finger and elbow bendings.

Wearable flexible sensors have developed rapidly in recent years because of their improved capacity to detect human motion in wide-ranging situations. In order to meet the requirements of flexibility and low detection limits, a new pressure sensor was fabricated based on electrospun barium titanate/multi-wall carbon nanotubes (BTO@MWCNTs) core-shell nanofibers coated with styrene-ethylene-butene-styrene block copolymer (SEBS). The sensor material (BTO@MWCNTs/SEBS) had a SEBS to BTO/MWCNTs mass ratio of 20:1 and exhibited an excellent piezoelectricity over a wide range of workable pressures from 1 to 50 kPa, higher output current of 56.37 nA and a superior piezoresistivity over a broad working range of 20 to 110 kPa in compression. The sensor also exhibited good durability and repeatability under different pressures and under long-term cyclic loading. These properties make the composite ideal for applications requiring monitoring subtle pressure changes (exhalation, pulse rate) and finger movements. The pressure sensor developed based on BTO@MWCNTs core-shell nanofibers has demonstrated great potential to be assembled into intelligent wearable devices.

Neuronal primary cilia are crucial for body weight maintenance. Type III adenylyl cyclase (AC3) is abundantly enriched in neuronal cilia, and mice with global AC3 ablation are obese. However, whether AC3 regulates body weight through its ciliary expression and the mechanism underlying this potential regulation are not clear. In this study, humanized AC3 knock‐in mice that are resistant to high‐fat diet (HFD)‐induced obesity are generated, and increases in the number and length of cilia in the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) are shown. It is demonstrated that mice with specifically knocked down ciliary AC3 expression in the VMH show pronounced HFD‐induced obesity. In addition, in vitro and in vivo analyses of the VMH show that ciliary AC3 regulates autophagy by binding an autophagy‐related gene, gamma‐aminobutyric acid A receptor‐associated protein (GABARAP). Mice with GABARAP knockdown in the VMH exhibit exacerbated HFD‐induced obesity. Overall, the findings may reveal a potential mechanism by which ciliary AC3 expression regulates body weight in the mouse VMH., Type III adenylyl cyclase (AC3) is abundantly enriched in neuronal cilia. Flexible strain sensors have attracted extensive attention due to their potential applications in wearable electronics and health monitoring. However, it is still a challenge to obtain flexible strain sensors with both high stretchability and wide linear strain sensing range. In this study, styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene copolymer/carbon nanotubes (SEBS/CNTs) composite fiber which showed both electrical conductivity and high stretchability was fabricated through a scalable wet spinning method. The effect of CNTs content on the strain sensing behavior of the SEBS/CNTs fiber based strain sensor was investigated. The results showed that when the CNTs content reached 7 wt%, the SEBS/CNTs composite fiber was capable of sensing strains as high as 500.20% and showed a wide linear strain sensing range of 0-500.2% with a gauge factor (GF) of 38.57. Combining high stretchability, high linearity and reliable stability, the SEBS/CNTs composite fiber based strain sensor had the ability to monitor the activities of different human body parts including hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder and knee.

Background: Ureteroscopy is widely applied in pregnant women with renal colic, but such patients are easy to experience uterine contraction after ureteroscopy, There are many factors which may result to uterine contraction, this study aims to explore the risk factors of uterine contraction triggered by ureteroscopy in pregnant women with renal colic. Methods: 101 pregnant women were retrospectively analyzed, all patients were hospitalized because of severe renal colic. All patients received ureteroscopy during which double J catheters were inserted into ureters for drainage. Patients received medical treatment individually according to their condition and the uterine contractions were detected by EHG within 12 hours after operation. Patients were classified as group A (uterine contraction, n=46) and group B (no uterine contraction, n=55) according to the presence or absence of continuously regular uterine contraction. Clinical characteristics were collected for further analysis, including history of deliveries, anesthesia methods, application of phloroglucinol or not, surgical time, Oxygen inhalation or not, pain relief or not after surgery, systemic inflammatory response syndrome(SIRS) occurred or not. A binary logistic regression analysis model was established to explore whether such clinical characteristics were relevant to uterine contraction after ureteroscopy. Results: The incidence of continuously regular uterine contraction occurred within 12 hours after ureteroscopy in pregnant women was 45.54%, and the presence of uterine contraction was related to the following factors(PConclusion: Continuously regular uterine contraction is easy to occur within 12 hours after ureteroscopy in pregnant women. SIRS occurred after surgery is a risk factor for uterine contraction; on the contrary, no history of childbirth, shorter surgical time, application of phloroglucinol, pain relief after surgery are protective factors.

Optical lenses driven by dielectric elastomer (DE) actuators with tunable focal lengths are presented here. They are inspired by the architecture of the crystalline lens and the ciliary muscle of the human eye and have prompted a growing interest. The most commonly used DEs in tunable lenses have often required highly transparent films and also the need to encapsulate clear liquid silicone to act as the lens. There is a restriction on the properties of the tunable lens imposed by materials limitations. Here, the fabrication of a fully 3D printed tunable lens with an inhomogeneous structure is described. It exhibited a 29% change in focal length from 33.6 mm to 26.1 mm under a dynamic driving voltage signal control. Furthermore, it displayed excellent stability when the focal length was tuned from far to near (30.1 mm to 25.3 mm) for 200 cycles. The tunable lens obtained mimics the working principle of the human eye in auto adjusting the focal length and has evident potential applications in imaging, information storage, beam steering and bifocal technology.

CRISPR-CasRx technology provides a new and powerful method for studying cellular RNA in human cancer. Herein, the pattern of expression of long noncoding RNA 00341 (LINC00341) as well as its biological function in bladder cancer were studied using CRISPR-CasRx. qRT-PCR was employed to quantify the levels of expression of LINC00341 in tumor tissues along with the matched non-tumor tissues. sgRNA targeting LINC00341 or the sgRNA negative control were transiently transfected into the T24 as well as 5,637 human bladder cancer cell lines. CCK-8, ELISA as well as wound healing methods were employed to explore cell proliferation, apoptosis and migration, respectively. The tumorigenicity experiment in nude mice also performed to detect cell proliferation. The expression of p21, Bax as well as E-cadherin were assayed using western blot. The results demonstrated that LINC00341 was overexpressed in bladder cancer in contrast with the healthy tissues. The LINC00341 expression level in high-grade tumors was higher in contrast with that in low-grade tumors. The expression of linc00341 was higher relative to that of non-invasive tumors. In T24 as well as 5637-cell lines harboring LINC00341-sgRNA, inhibition of cell proliferation (in vitro and in vivo), elevated apoptosis rate and diminished migration ability. Moreover, silencing LINC00341 upregulated the expressions of p21, Bax as well as E-cadherin. Knockout of these genes could eliminate the phenotypic changes caused by sgRNA targeting LINC00341. Our data demonstrate that LINC00341 has a carcinogenic role in human bladder cancer.

In the main olfactory epithelium (MOE), new olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) are persistently generated to replace lost neurons throughout an organism's lifespan. This process predominantly depends on the proliferation of globose basal cells (GBCs), the actively dividing stem cells in the MOE. Here, by using CRISPR/Cas9 and RNAi coupled with adeno-associated virus (AAV) nose delivery approaches, we demonstrated that knockdown of miR-200b/a in the MOE resulted in supernumerary Mash1-marked GBCs and decreased numbers of differentiated OSNs, accompanied by abrogation of male behaviors. We further showed that in the MOE, miR-200b/a targets the ten-eleven translocation methylcytosine dioxygenase TET3, which cooperates with RE1-silencing transcription factor (REST) to exert their functions. Deficiencies including proliferation, differentiation, and behaviors illustrated in miR-200b/a knockdown mice were rescued by suppressing either TET3 or REST. Our work describes a mechanism of coordination of GBC proliferation and differentiation in the MOE and olfactory male behaviors through miR-200/TET3/REST signaling.

In this work, polyphenolic extract from walnut green husks (denoted as walnut polyphenols), which is an abundant agroindustrial residue/waste, was used to modify barium titanate (BT) particles in the preparation of silicone rubber (SR) based dielectric elastomer (DE) composites with enhanced electromechanical performance. By employing walnut polyphenols modification, the dispersibility of BT particles in the SR matrix and the compatibility between BT and SR were greatly improved, which resulted in enhanced mechanical performance of the DE composites. Dielectric property measurement showed that DE composites containing walnut polyphenols modified BT particles (WNBT) had higher dielectric constants and lower dielectric losses than that of DEs with unmodified BT particles. Furthermore, it was found that the walnut polyphenols modification resulted in decreased dielectric loss tangent of the DE composites, suggesting an improved compatibility between the modified BT particles and SR. Finally, the static and dynamic electromechanical performance of the DE composites were evaluated. The SR/5% WNBT composite achieved the highest actuated area strain of 38% among the SR based composites used in this work. Moreover, the actuated area strain of SR/WNBT composites exhibited excellent electromechanical stability during the application of cyclic voltage signals.

In this paper, silver nanoparticles functionalized poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fibers with antimicrobial activity, electrical conductivity and good coating stability are reported. Firstly, silver plated PET fibers were fabricated by rapid polydopamine (PDA) modification followed by electroless plating. Secondly, the surface morphologies and compositions of PDA modified and silver coated PET fibers were characterized by employing scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectrometry. Finally, the antimicrobial properties and electrical conductivity of the silver plated PET fibers were investigated. The results showed that the silver coated PET fibers exhibited excellent antimicrobial activity to both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus (with an antimicrobial efficiency of 100 and 99.99%, respectively), and that the antimicrobial activity was well maintained after washing. The silver coated PET fibers showed electrical resistance of 0.76 Ω per 1 cm, indicating good conductivity. It was also demonstrated that the silver layer that formed had good mechanical durability, as indicated by conductivity measurements during tensile loading and observation of the surface morphology of the fibers under various modes of deformation.

In this work, a recently developed 3D additive processing technology termed electrohydrodynamic (EHD) printing was employed to fabricate dielectric elastomer (DE) films by using styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS) inks with the addition of high dielectric titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles. In order to improve the dispersibility of TiO2 in the SEBS matrix, extracted walnut polyphenols were utilized for surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles labelled wp-TiO2. The effect of the applied voltage on the ink jet morphology of the obtained SEBS based inks during EHD printing was analyzed. The prepared films had precision patterned shapes and their morphology was studied. It revealed that the dispersibility of TiO2 nanoparticles in the SEBS matrix and their compatibility were greatly improved using this procedure. Furthermore, the printed DE films were found to have excellent mechanical, dielectric and electromechanical properties. For the range of DEs fabricated, the SEBS/10%wp-TiO2 composite exhibited the maximum actuated area strain of 21.5% at an electric field of about 34.0 V/μm without degradation of other properties.

Fatigue life prediction is of great significance in ensuring magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) based rubber components exhibit reliability and do not compromise safety under complex loading, and this necessitates the development of plausible fatigue life predictors for MREs. In this research, silicone rubber based MREs were fabricated by incorporating soft carbonyl iron magnetic particles. Equi-biaxial fatigue behaviour of the fabricated MREs was investigated by using the bubble inflation method. The relationship between fatigue life and maximum engineering stress, maximum strain and strain energy density were studied. The results showed that maximum engineering stress and stored energy density can be used as reliable fatigue life predictors for SR based MREs when they are subjected to dynamic equi-biaxial loading. General equations based on maximum engineering stress and strain energy density were developed for fatigue life prediction of MREs.

Objectives The emergence of fungal disease calls for the urgency of development of novel drug. In this study, we developed a novel pogostone analogue, DHA-10 and investigated its preclinical pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution, excretion and protein binding rate in rats. Methods DHA-10 was synthesized with dehydroacetic acid (DHA) as the starting material and the structure confirmed by NMR and HRMS. The LC-MS/MS was applied to quantitative analysis of DHA-10 concentrations in the biological samples. Key finding DHA-10 was eliminated rapidly in rat plasma with half-lives of 3.39 ± 0.5, 3.24 ± 0.32 and 3.80 ± 0.40 h after single oral doses of 70, 140 and 280 mg/kg, respectively, and showed linear pharmacokinetic within the examined dosage range. The oral bioavailability of DHA-10 was 69.09 ± 3.9%. DHA-10 distributed widely in tissues with highest tissue concentration was found in small intestine at 2.5 h postdose, followed by the stomach, liver and uterus. Approximately, 1.50 ± 0.26% and 9.12 ± 2.53% of parent drug was excreted via the urine and faeces within 48 h, respectively; 1.45 ± 0.12% was excreted into the bile up to 36 h after a single oral administration of 140 mg/kg. Binding rate of DHA-10 with plasma protein was about 78.80 ± 1.75% in a concentration-independent manner. Conclusions DHA-10 was successfully synthesized and characterized. The preclinical pharmacokinetics study in rats supported the further development of this new antifungal candidate compound.

To obtain magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) with improved mechanical properties and exhibiting an enhanced magnetorheological (MR) effect, bio-inspired dopamine modification has been used to improve the functionality at the surface of carbonyl iron (CI) particles. Various techniques including x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to confirm that a polydopamine (PDA) layer of about 27.5 nm had been successfully deposited on the surface of the carbonyl iron particles prior to their inclusion in the MRE composites. The magnetic properties of PDA modified CI particles were shown to be almost the same as those for untreated CI particles. With the introduction of a PDA layer to the surfaces of the particles, both the tensile strength and the elongation at break of the MREs were improved. Furthermore, the MRE composites filled with PDA-coated CI particles exhibited lower zero-field storage moduli but higher magnetic field induced storage moduli when magnetization saturation was reached. The absolute and relative MR effect for the MREs reached 0.68 ± 0.002 MPa and 294% respectively, which were higher than those of MREs with pristine CI particles whose absolute and relative MR effect were 0.57 ± 0.02 MPa and 187% respectively. The findings of this work provide insights into enhanced fabrication of MREs with both improved mechanical properties and magneto-induced performance.

Background Osteosarcoma (OS) is a significant threat to the lives of children and young adults. Although neoadjuvant chemotherapy is the first choice of treatment for OS, it is limited by serious side-effects and cancer metastasis. β-Elemonic acid (β-EA), an active component extracted from Boswellia carterii Birdw., has been reported to exhibit potential anti-inflammatory and anticancer activities. However, the anti-tumor effects and underlying mechanisms on OS as well as pharmacokinetic characteristics of β-EA remain unknown. Purpose This study was aimed to investigating the anti-tumor effects of β-EA on human OS, the underlying mechanisms, and the pharmacokinetic and tissue distribution characteristics. Study design and methods Cell viability and colony formation assays were performed to determine the effect of β-EA cell on cell proliferation. Apoptosis rates, mitochondrial membrane potential and cell cycle features were analyzed by flow cytometry. qRT-PCR, Western blot, immunofluorescence and immunohistochemical assays were conducted to evaluate the expression levels of genes or proteins related to the pathways affected by β-EA in vitro and in vivo. Cell migration and invasion were evaluated in wound healing and Transwell chamber assays. The effects and pharmacokinetic characteristics of β-EA in vivo were evaluated by analyzing tumor suppression, pharmacokinetics and tissue distribution. Results Explorations indicated that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress conditions provoked by β-EA activated the PERK/eIF2α/ATF4 branch of the unfolded protein reaction (UPR), stimulating C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP)-regulated apoptosis and inducing Ca2+ leakage leading to caspase-dependent apoptosis. Furthermore, β-EA induced G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and inhibited metastasis of HOS and 143B cells by attenuating Wnt/β-catenin signaling effects, which included decreased levels of p-Akt(Ser473), p-Gsk3β (Ser9), Wnt/β-catenin target genes (c-Myc and CyclinD1) along with a decline in nuclear β-catenin accumulation. The fast absorption, short elimination half-life, and linear pharmacokinetic characteristics of β-EA were also revealed. The distribution of β-EA was detected in the tumor and bone tissues. Conclusions Overall, both in vitro and in vivo investigations showed the potential of β-EA for the treatment of human OS. The pharmacokinetic profile and considerable distribution in the tumor and bone tissues warrant further preclinical or even clinical studies.

Direct electroless silver plating of para-aramid (PPTA) is difficult due to its extremely low surface chemical energy. In order to facilitate the deposition of silver nanoparticles and to enhance the washing fastness, oxygen plasma treatment and dopamine modification were conducted before silver plating of PPTA fibers. Various techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) were used to characterize the surface morphology, chemical composition and thermal stability of the silver-plated PPTA fibers. Electrical resistance and silver content of the silver-coated PPTA fibers before and after standard washing were also studied. The results showed that silver nanoparticles were successfully coated onto the surface of PPTA fibers with and without plasma treatment, but the coating continuity and the electrical conductivity of the silver-coated PPTA fibers were greatly enhanced with the assistance of plasma treatment. It was also demonstrated that the washing fastness of silver-coated PPTA fibers was improved after plasma treatment as indicated by electrical resistance and continuity of the silver nanoparticles after various washing cycles. It was found that the electrical resistance of plasma-treated PPTA-PDA/Ag fibers prepared at an AgNO3 concentration of 20 g/L reached 0.89 &Omega, /cm and increased slightly to 0.94 &Omega, /cm after 10 standard washing cycles. The silver-coated PPTA fibers also showed stable electrical conductivity under 250 repeated stretching-releasing cycles at a strain of 3%.

Wind power generation is an environmentally friendly way to produce electricity, but wind turbine blades that are prone to freeze in winter will reduce the efficiency of the generator. Therefore, the preparation of anti-icing blades is important and essential. Herein, anti-icing polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/heat-shrinkable polyvinyl chloride (HSPVC) composite film was prepared by depositing a PTFE coating on the surface of HSPVC film via vacuum thermal evaporation. HSPVC films were pretreated respectively by argon and carbon tetrafluoride (CF4) plasma cleaning to introduce new groups and change their surface energy. After that, PTFE coating with a thickness of about 4 &mu, m was deposited on the surface of HSPVC, obtaining a superhydrophobic surface with an apparent water contact angle of 150&deg, The results demonstrated that the breaking strength of the PTFE/HSPVC composite film using CF4 plasma pretreatment decreased by only 3.47% after exposing to ultraviolet light with the power of 1000 W for 5 min, suggesting an excellent anti-ultraviolet property. Furthermore, compared with the pristine films, the PTFE/HSPVC composite films exhibited better adhesive strength, super anti-icing property even after 10 icing&ndash, deicing cycles, and excellent dynamic anti-icing performance. The PTFE/HSPVC composite film with good adhesive strength, anti-ultraviolet, and anti-icing properties has prospective applications in packaging of wind turbine blades.

The equi-biaxial fatigue behaviour of silicone-based magnetorheological elastomers in external magnetic fields was studied. Wöhler curves relating fatigue life to stress amplitude and dynamic stored energy for magnetorheological elastomers with a range of magnetic particle contents were derived. It was found that the fatigue life of magnetorheological elastomers in magnetic fields was higher than that without magnetic fields. Under constant stress amplitude conditions, the presence of magnetic fields resulted in longer times for the samples to undergo large deformations and thus complex modulus ( E*) decreased at a slower rate during the fatigue process, especially for low stress amplitudes. Magnetorheological elastomer samples tested in the presence of magnetic fields reached limiting values of E* at failure ranging from 1.28 to 1.44 MPa. The application of magnetic fields was found to have negligible influence on the damping loss factor of magnetorheological elastomers containing various volume fractions of carbonyl iron particles.

Compared with traditional methods for preparing dielectric elastomer (DE) films, electrohydrodynamic (EHD) 3D printing displays many advantages, notably full automation, computer control and flexible design. It also confers high printing resolution, high preparation efficiency with minimal probability of nozzle clogging. In this article, EHD 3D printing was employed to fabricate silicone rubber (SR) based DE films. In order to increase their dielectric constant, high dielectric copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) particles were added into the SR ink. Optimal printing conditions were determined by analyzing the effects of printing voltage and ink properties on the formation of liquid cone and the printed line width. The SR/CuPc composite film with 3 wt% CuPc particles (SR/CuPc-3) exhibits a high dielectric constant of 5.52, with a large actuated area strain of 23.7% under an electric field of 39.4 V μm−1. Furthermore, under 100 cycles of electric field loading, SR/CuPc-3 demonstrate excellent electromechanical stability, indicating that EHD 3D printing holds a considerable potential for fabricating high-performance DE films in an efficacious manner.

How to function properly under extreme working conditions is a key challenge for flexible electronic devices because their performance is often susceptible to environmental conditions. Herein, we demonstrated the fabrication, evaluation, and application of a flexible and highly conductive meta-aramid fiber paper (MAFP) by combining oxygen plasma treatment and electroless silver plating. The plasma treatment etched the MAFP surface and introduced large amounts of oxygen-containing groups which led to the formation of continuous silver coating and high interface binding between MAFP and Ag nanoparticles. The results showed that the silver-coated MAFP had an electrical resistance as low as 0.152 Ω/sq and exhibited excellent temperature, mechanical and chemical stability. Finally, these properties of silver-coated MAFP were exploited for its use as electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. Experimental results revealed that the EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of the silver-coated MAFP reached as high as 95.47 dB and a specific EMI SE of 530.38 dB·mm−1. These results have clearly demonstrated that MAFP can become highly electrically conductive after simple plasma treatment and silver coating while keeping its excellent thermal and chemical stability and therefore holds great promise for the development of new kinds of all-weather flexible electronic devices.

Fiber-based strain sensors are considered to be an important part of smart wearables due to their flexible performance, lightness, and easily processing into various structures. However, the low sensitivity of fiber-based strain sensors has limited their real-life applications for detecting human movements. In this work, a poly(styrene-butadiene-styrene) (SBS)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs) core–sheath fiber (SSCCSF) strain sensor is fabricated via a simple and facile coaxial wet-spinning method. The cross-sectional morphology, the mechanical properties, and the electromechanical performance of the SSCCSFs are investigated. Scanning electron microcopy results show that SSCCSFs have a bean-like cross-section with SBS as the core and SBS/MWCNTs as the sheath. Electromechanical performance evaluation confirms that the SSCCSF show a high sensitivity in a broad working range (gauge factor = 25832.77 at 41.5% strain) and excellent durability (5000 cycles at 10% strain). Furthermore, the SSCCSF displays outstanding sensing performance for detecting large motions in human movements including hand joint bending (such as knuckles and wrists) and subtle motions in physiological activities, involved in swallowing behavior, breathing, and pulse beat. This study demonstrates the potential application of SSCCSFs for wearable electronics with activity monitoring sensors.

Dielectric elastomer (DE) composites with high electrical breakdown strength and large voltage-induced deformation were developed by retaining pre-stretched thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) fibers in ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). The microstructure of the candidate E-TPU fiber membrane and EVA coated E-TPU (E-TPU/EVA) film were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The quasi-static and dynamic mechanical property, and the electromechanical properties, including the dielectric constant, dielectric loss tangent, and electromechanical sensitivity, of the DE composites were evaluated. Initially, tensile tests demonstrated that the DE composites based on E-TPU/EVAs had a higher elongation at break of above 1000% but a low elastic modulus of approximately 1.7 MPa. Furthermore, dielectric spectroscopy showed that the E-TPU/EVA had a dielectric constant of 4.5 at the frequency of 1000 Hz, which was 1.2 times higher than that of pure EVA film. Finally, it was found from electromechanical test that the voltage induced strain of E-TPU/EVA rose to 6%, nearly 3 times higher than that of pure TPU film, indicating an excellent electromechanical property. The DE composites developed have demonstrated the potential to be good candidate materials in the fields of artificial intelligence, biomimicry and renewable energy.

Adenylyl Cyclase 3 (AC3) plays an important role in the olfactory sensation-signaling pathway in mice. AC3 deficiency leads to defects in olfaction. However, it is still unknown whether AC3 deficiency affects gene expression or olfactory signal transduction pathways within the main olfactory epithelium (MOE). In this study, gene microarrays were used to screen differentially expressed genes in MOE from AC3 knockout (AC3(-/-)) and wild-type (AC3(+/+)) mice. The differentially expressed genes identified were subjected to bioinformatic analysis and verified by qRT-PCR. Gene expression in the MOE from AC3(-/-) mice was significantly altered, compared to AC3(+/+) mice. Of the 41266 gene probes, 3379 had greater than 2-fold fold change in expression levels between AC3(-/-) and AC3(+/+) mice, accounting for 8% of the total gene probes. Of these genes, 1391 were up regulated, and 1988 were down regulated, including 425 olfactory receptor genes, 99 genes that are specifically expressed in the immature olfactory neurons, 305 genes that are specifically expressed in the mature olfactory neurons, and 155 genes that are involved in epigenetic regulation. Quantitative RT-PCR verification of the differentially expressed epigenetic regulation related genes, olfactory receptors, ion transporter related genes, neuron development and differentiation related genes, lipid metabolism and membrane protein transport etc. related genes showed that P75NTR, Hinfp, Gadd45b, and Tet3 were significantly up-regulated, while Olfr370, Olfr1414, Olfr1208, Golf, Faim2, Tsg101, Mapk10, Actl6b, H2BE, ATF5, Kirrrel2, OMP, Drd2 etc. were significantly down-regulated. In summary, AC3 may play a role in proximal olfactory signaling and play a role in the regulation of differentially expressed genes in mouse MOE.

The influence of equivalent replacement of silica (SiO2) by carbon nanotubes (CNT) or graphene oxide (GO) on the microstructure, mechanical and fatigue behaviors of SiO2/styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites was investigated. Results showed that the synergistic effect between CNT (or GO) and SiO2 was beneficial for the filler network and improved the mechanical properties of SBR composites. Furthermore, the introduction of CNT (or GO) led to low crack growth rates and the crack propagation tips were easy to deflection. Under multiaxial fatigue conditions, the maximum engineering stress was determined to be a reliable fatigue life predictor for SBR composites.

Graphene oxide (GO) sheets and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of nanometer size and offer large shape factors which are beneficial in reducing crack propagation rates of composites when used in carbon black (CB) reinforced natural rubber (NR), thereby prolonging the service lives of rubber composites. In this research, CNT-CB/NR and GO-CB/NR composites were prepared by partially replacing CB with one-dimensional CNTs and two-dimensional flaky graphene oxide GO, respectively. The results showed that the complex filler dispersion in NR matrices was improved due to the isolation effect between the different fillers. The strain-induced crystallization (SIC) ability of CB/NR was effectively enhanced by the addition of both GO and CNT. The modulus at 100 % strain and tear strength of the composites were also improved. More branching and deflections were observed at the crack tips of the composites and both effectively hindered crack propagation in the materials. Under uniaxial and multi-axial cyclic loading, the fatigue lives of CNT-CB/NR and GO-CB/NR composites greatly increased when compared with the fatigue lives of CB/NR composites. The GO-CB/NR composites exhibited evident advantages in respect of fatigue resistance and durability among the three composites.

Type 3 adenylyl cyclase (Adcy3) is localized to the cilia of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) and is an essential component of the olfactory cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling pathway. Although the role of this enzyme in odor detection and axonal projection in OSNs was previously characterized, researchers will still have to determine its function in the maturation of postnatal OSNs and olfactory cilium ultrastructure. Previous studies on newborns showed that the anatomic structure of the main olfactory epithelium (MOE) of Adcy3 knockout mice (Adcy3-/-) is indistinguishable from that of their wild-type littermates (Adcy3+/+), whereas the architecture and associated composition of MOE are relatively underdeveloped at this early age. The full effects of sensory deprivation on OSNs may not also be exhibited in such age. In the present study, following a comparison of postnatal OSNs in seven-, 30-, and 90-day-old Adcy3-/- mice and wild-type controls (Adcy3+/+), we observed that the absence of Adcy3 leads to cumulative defects in the maturation of OSNs. Upon aging, Adcy3-/- OSNs exhibited increase in immature cells and reduction in mature cells along with elevated apoptosis levels. The density and ultrastructure of Adcy3-/- cilia were also disrupted in mice upon aging. Collectively, our results reveal an indispensable role of Adcy3 in postnatal maturation of OSNs and maintenance of olfactory cilium ultrastructure in mice through adulthood.

Triptolide (TP), an oxygenated diterpene, has a variety of beneficial pharmacodynamic activities but its clinical applications are restricted due to severe testicular injury. This study aimed to delineate the molecular mechanisms of TP-induced testicular injury in vitro and in vivo. TP (5-50000 nmol/L) dose-dependently decreased the viability of TM4 Sertoli cells with an IC50 value of 669.5-269.45 nmol/L at 24 h. TP (125, 250, and 500 nmol/L) dose-dependently increased the accumulation of ROS, the phosphorylation of JNK, mitochondrial dysfunction and activation of the intrinsic apoptosis pathway in TM4 cells. These processes were attenuated by co-treatment with the antioxidant N-acetyl cysteine (NAC, 1 mmol/L). Furthermore, TP treatment inhibited the translocation of Nrf2 from cytoplasm into the nucleus as well as the expression of downstream genes NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase1 (NQO1), catalase (CAT) and hemeoxygenase 1 (HO-1), thus abrogating Nrf2-mediated defense mechanisms against oxidative stress. Moreover, siRNA knockdown of Nrf2 significantly potentiated TP-induced apoptosis of TM4 cells. The above results from in vitro experiments were further validated in male mice after oral administration of TP (30, 60, and 120 mg·kg-1·d-1, for 14 d), as evidenced by the detected indexes, including dose-dependently decreased SDH activity, increased MDA concentration, altered testicle histomorphology, elevated caspase-3 activation, apoptosis induction, increased phosphorylation of JNK, and decreased gene expression of NQO1, CAT and HO-1 as well as nuclear protein expression of Nrf2 in testicular tissue. Our results demonstrate that TP activates apoptosis of Sertoli cells and injury of the testis via the ROS/JNK-mediated mitochondrial-dependent apoptosis pathway and down-regulates Nrf2 activation.

Adenylate cyclase 3 (AC3) is an important component of the cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) signaling pathway and converts adenosine triphosphate into cAMP. Male mice with AC3 deletion (AC3-/-) are sterile. However, the mechanical mechanism remains unclear. By TUNEL staining, we found that cell apoptosis in the testicular tissues of AC3-/- mice increased significantly compared with that in the wild-type (AC3+/+) mice. Differentially expressed genes regulated by AC3 in the testicular tissues were identified by gene chip hybridization. We observed that the expression of 693 genes was altered in the testicular tissues of AC3-/- mice, including 330 up-regulated and 363 down-regulated gene expression with fold changes higher than 2 (≥2) as the standards. Furthermore, part of these differentially expressed genes was verified by the real-time fluorescence quantification PCR and immunofluorescent staining. The expression levels of the genes related to olfactory receptors, cell apoptosis, transcriptional activity, defensive reaction, cell adhesion, cell death, and immunoreactions were significantly altered in the testicular tissues of AC3-/- mice compared with AC3+/+ mice. In addition, the corresponding Ca2+, cAMP, and cell adhesion signaling pathways, as well as the signaling pathways related to axon guidance and cell interaction, were altered significantly in the AC3-/- mice. These data would help elucidate the general understanding of the mechanisms underlying the sterility in AC3-/- male mice.

The melt-free radical grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto powered isotactic poly(1-butene) (iPB-1) using styrene (St) as a comonomer in a Haake mixer was studied. The effects of temperature, initial GMA, and peroxide concentration, as well as the addition of St comonomer, on the final grafting degree, grafting efficiency, and the melt flow rate of grafted polymer were studied. It was shown that the addition of St as a comonomer could significantly enhance the grafting degree of GMA on iPB-1 and reduce the extent of degradation of iPB-1 to some degree. It has been found that the grafting degree of dual-monomer melt-grafted iPB-1 was about twice that of single-monomer-grafted iPB-1 for the same monomer and peroxide concentrations. The grafting of GMA onto iPB-1 remarkably accelerated the crystal form II I transformation of iPB-1. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2011. © 2011 Society of Plastics Engineers
