Some previous studies have analyzed potential predictors related to the high incidence rate of coronary artery disease (CAD) and established a relevant nomogram for CAD in patients before coronary angiography (CAG). Nevertheless, there are still few models to predict chronic total occlusion (CTO). In this study, we aimed to construct a risk model and nomogram that could effectively predict the probability of CTO before CAG.In total, the derivation set (n=1,105) and the validation set (n=368), which included patients with CAG diagnosis of CTO, were collected. A statistical difference test was performed for clinical, demography, echocardiography, medication history, laboratory indexes, and angiography. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to determine the independent risk factors that affect the diagnosis of CTO. A nomogram was established and validated based on the independent predictors. The area under the curve (AUC), the calibration curve, and the decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the nomogram.The incidence of CTO within CAD was 21.5%. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that risk factors for gender (male), neutrophil percentage (NE%), hematocrit (HCT), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), ejection fraction (EF), troponin I (TnI), and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) were independent predictors of CTO. A nomogram was constructed incorporating these independent predictors with good discrimination (0.746 in the C-index) and external validation (0.741 in the C-index). The calibration curves and the DCA showed the reliability and accuracy of this clinical prediction model.The nomogram, composed of gender, NE%, HCT, TC, HDL, EF, TnI, and NT-proBNP, can be used for the prediction of CTO in CAD patients, which opens a great possibility of enriching the means to predict the prognosis of these patients in clinical practice. More studies are needed to validate the effectiveness of this nomogram in other populations.

Natural rubber (NR) and butyl rubber (IIR) blends were compatibilized by isobutylene-isoprene block copolymer (IIBC) which was specifically synthesized with a relatively high content of isoprene (14.5% mole fraction). Aiming at high damping elastomers, the IIR acts as the high damping phase dispersed in the natural rubber (NR) matrix in this blend. The morphology and microstructure was characterized by atomic force microscope (AFM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The results indicated that the IIBC as a compatibilizer could greatly increase the interfacial thickness. Damping property was studied by dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA) and rubber processing analyzer (RPA). The results showed that the loss factor greatly increased with adding IIBC, and this may be due to the improved stress transfer promoting the IIR phase to deform and then dissipate energy. The tensile test demonstrated that the tensile strength and modulus increased when 4 parts per hundred rubber [phr] of IIBC was added. Finally, the NR and new NR/IIR isolation bearing samples were prepared and tested on a pressure shear testing machine that could simulate the actual situation during an earthquake.The results showed that hysteretic loss (for one cycle) of the new NR/IIR sample is 83% higher than that of the NR sample, rendering the compatibilized blends potential in isolation rubber bearings application.

The aim of this study was to elucidate the function of long non-coding ribonucleic acids (lncRNAs) HANR in aggravating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) progression via targeting microRNA-140-5p (miRNA-140-5p).The relative expression level of HANR in NSCLC tissues and cell lines was determined by quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR). The correlation between HANR expression and the prognosis of NSCLC was analyzed. The regulatory effects of HANR on cellular behaviors of NSCLC cells were evaluated by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), transwell and wound healing assay. Meanwhile, the relative expression of miRNA-140-5p in NSCLC tissues and cell lines was determined by qRT-PCR. In addition, rescue experiments were carried out to evaluate the potential influence of HANR/miRNA-140-5p on the progression of NSCLC.HANR expression was significantly up-regulated in NSCLC tissues and cell lines. HANR expression was positively correlated with lymphatic metastasis and distant metastasis of NSCLC patients, whereas it was negatively correlated with the overall survival of NSCLC patients. Knockdown of HANR markedly suppressed the proliferative, migratory and invasive abilities of NSCLC cells. In NSCLC tissues, the miRNA-140-5p level was negatively associated with HANR level. Furthermore, inhibited cellular behaviors of NSCLC cells transfected with sh-HANR were partially reversed after miRNA-140-5p knockdown.LncRNA HANR accelerates the proliferative, migratory and invasive abilities of NSCLC via negatively mediating miRNA-140-5p. Furthermore, HANR is closely correlated with lymphatic metastasis, distant metastasis and poor prognosis of NSCLC.

The effects of miR-145 (microRNA 145) on M. pneumoniae (MP)-infected MRC-5 (Medical Research Council cell strain 5) cell TGF-β/Smad (transforming growth factor beta/Smad) fibrosis pathway were explored through constructing MP-infected MRC-5 cell models. In addition, the qPCR (quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction) and Western blot were applied to detect the mRNA and protein expressions of miR-145, TGF-β1 (transforming growth factor beta 1), Smad3, Smad4, MMP2 (matrix metalloproteinase 2), FN1 (fibronectin 1), ELN (elastin) and COLI α1 (collagen type I alpha 1) signaling molecules in TGF-β/Smad fibrosis pathway. The results showed that the expression of miR-145 in MRC-5 cells was significantly increased after MP infection. In addition, miR-145 inhibited the fibrosis promoting TGF-β/Smad pathway by targeting Smad3, a key factor in the TGF-β/Smad pathway. It can be concluded that, in the process of MP infection, the expression of miR-145 is stimulated to negatively regulate the fibrosis-promoting pathway of TGF-β/Smad.

The current study aimed to examine the role and mechanism of a conserved long noncoding RNA termed NORAD (noncoding RNA activated by DNA damage, also named LINC00657) in gastric cancer (GC) progression.Quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to determine the expression level of relevant genes in GC cell lines. Cell proliferation was examined by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assays. Cell migration and invasion were detected by transwell migration and invasion assays. Protein levels of the indicated genes were detected by Western blotting. Cell apoptosis was examined by flow cytometry.Results showed that NORAD knockdown decreased cell proliferation, migration and invasion but increased cell apoptosis. NORAD knockdown affected the expression of genes related to apoptosis and Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT). In addition, NORAD's depletion resulted in reduced Ras Homolog Family Member A (RhoA) and Rho-associated coiled-coil containing protein kinase 1 (ROCK1) expression. Furthermore, NORAD's expression was positively correlated with RhoA and ROCK1 expressions in GC based on The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database.Our results demonstrate the oncogenic role of NORAD in gastric cancer progression.

Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) is an important cash crop in Yunnan Province, China. In 2003, yacon was introduced to Yunnan province as a novelty root crop and as an experimental source of natural sugars; now more than 15 provinces cultivate the crop. Yunnan is one of the major yacon producing areas of China, with up to 10,000 ha yielding up to 50,000 t of yacon, which is nearly half of the production in China. In April and May 2010, bacterial wilt of yacon was observed in the fields of Lion Mountain of Wuding County, Yunnan Province, China. In 2011, the disease occurred in approximately 1 ha of yacon, resulting in 10% crop loss in that area. The initial symptoms observed were irregular, black, necrotic lesions on leaf margins. After 4 to 7 days, leaves became totally necrotic, plants wilted, and black stripes were observed on plant stems. Within 2 to 3 weeks, more than 70% of leaves within the crop were wilted. Subsequently, the plants died and stems became brittle. When dead plants were pulled from the soil, tubers were found to have turned black. When diseased stems and/or petioles were cut with a sterile sharp knife or razor blade, bacterial ooze appeared on the cut ends. High populations of morphologically uniform bacteria were isolated from the diseased plants by conventional methods. When cultured on TZC (2,3,5-Triphenylte tetrazolium chloride) agar medium (3), colonies were large, elevated, fluidal, and entirely white with a pale red center. The isolated bacterium was gram-negative, grew aerobically, and did not form endospores. The cells were 0.5 to 0.7 × 1.5 to 2.0 μm and nonencapsulated. Ralstonia solanacearum was identified and confirmed as the pathogen on the basis of morphological and physiological characteristics, pathogenicity test, and 16S rDNA sequence analysis (1,4). The nucleotide sequence is available in GenBank (Accession No. HQ176322.1). The pathogenic strain belonged to race 1 and biovar 3 according to the pathogenicity and carbohydrate utilization tests (2). Koch's postulates were tested in the greenhouse, with 10 plants inoculated per species. Plants were inoculated with 15 μl of cell suspension containing 106 to 107 CFU ml–1 deposited into the third axilla with a capillary tube. The bacteria could infect tomato, pepper, tobacco, potato, common sage (Salvia dugesii Fernald), and patchouli, and caused typical symptoms of wilt and black lesions, but could not infect leaves of swamp mahogany (Eucalyptus robusta Smith), stramonium (Dature stramonium Datura L.), ginger, or maize. To our knowledge, this is the first report of yacon as a host of R. solanacearum. Since the pathogen has a wide host range, monitoring of the vegetation in and around yacon fields should be implemented as a mandatory management measure to prevent disease spread. References: (1) C. Blueberry (Vaccinium spp.) is becoming increasingly popular in China as a nutritional berry crop. With the expansion of blueberry production, many diseases have become widespread in different regions of China. In August of 2012, stem and leaf spots symptomatic of anthracnose were sporadically observed on highbush blueberries in a field located in Liaoning, China, where approximately 15% of plants were diseased. Symptoms first appeared as yellow to reddish, irregularly-shaped lesions on leaves and stems. The lesions then expanded, becoming dark brown in the center and surrounded by a reddish halo. Leaf and stem tissues (5 × 5 mm) were cut from the lesion margins and surface-disinfected in 70% ethanol for 30 s, followed by three rinses with sterile water before placing on potato dextrose agar (PDA). Plates were incubated at 28°C. Colonies were initially white, becoming grayish-white to gray with yellow spore masses. Conidia were one-celled, hyaline, and cylindrical with rounded ends, measuring 15.0 to 25.0 × 4.0 to 7.5 μm. No teleomorph was observed. The fungus was tentatively identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (PenZ.) PenZ & Sacc. (teleomorph Glomerella cingulata (Stoneman) Spauld. & H. Schrenk) based on morphological characteristics of the colony and conidia (1). Genomic DNA was extracted from isolate XCG1 and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal DNA (ITS1–5.8S-ITS2) was amplified with primer pairs ITS1 and ITS4. BLAST searches showed 99% identity with C. gloeosporioides isolates in GenBank (Accession No. AF272779). The sequence of isolate XCG1 (C. gloeosporioides) was deposited into GenBank (JX878503). Pathogenicity tests were conducted on 2-year-old potted blueberries, cv. Berkeley. Stems and leaves of 10 potted blueberry plants were wounded with a sterilized needle and sprayed with a suspension of 105 conidia per ml of sterilized water. Five healthy potted plants were inoculated with sterilized water as control. Dark brown lesions surrounded by reddish halos developed on all inoculated leaves and stems after 7 days, and the pathogen was reisolated from lesions of 50% of inoculated plants as described above. The colony and conidial morphology were identical to the original isolate XCG1. No symptoms developed on the control plants. The causal agent of anthracnose on blueberry was identified as C. gloeosporioides on the basis of morphological and molecular characteristics, and its pathogenicity was confirmed with Koch's postulates. Worldwide, it has been reported that blueberry anthracnose might be caused by C. acutatum and C. gloeosporioides (2). However, we did not isolate C. acutatum during this study. As the inspection tour targeted at disarranged parking phenomenon conducted by specially assigned security personnel to parking lots in neighborhoods makes it more difficult for parking management, this paper proposes an FPGA-based character recognition robot design. The camera was controlled by the master controller EP4CE115F29C7N to acquire the license plate information, the improved character recognition algorithm based on YCbCr color space was put forward to identify the license plates, and the robot walking was controlled by combining IR control with increment-type PID. The experimental results show that this robot is of certain practical value as it is capable of effective recognition and displaying the characters on the license plates.

DNA fingerprinting is both a popular and important technique with several advantages in plant cultivar identification. However, this technique has not been used widely and efficiently in practical plant identification because the analysis and recording of data generated from fingerprinting and genotyping are tedious and difficult. We developed a novel approach known as a cultivar identification diagram (CID) strategy that uses DNA markers to separate plant individuals in a more efficient, practical, and referable manner. A CID was manually constructed and a polymorphic marker was generated from each polymerase chain reaction for sample separation. In this study, 67 important sea buckthorn cultivars cultivated in China were successfully separated with random amplified polymorphic DNA markers using the CID analysis strategy, with only seven 11-nucleotide primers employed. The utilization of the CID of these 67 sea buckthorn cultivars was verified by identifying 2 randomly chosen groups of cultivars among the 67 cultivars. The main advantages of this identification strategy include fewer primers used and separation of all cultivars using the corresponding primers. This sea buckthorn CID was able to separate any sea buckthorn cultivars among the 67 studied, which is useful for sea buckthorn cultivar identification, cultivar-right-protection, and for the sea buckthorn nursery industry in China.

Osteosarcoma is one of the most common primary bone malignancies. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have recently emerged as key regulators of osteosarcoma. The aim of present study was to explore the prognostic value of long non-coding RNA XIST (XIST) in osteosarcoma and XIST's relation to the cell proliferation in osteosarcoma in vitro.The XIST expressions were detected in osteosarcoma tissues and their paired adjacent normal tissues from 145 osteosarcoma patients by using qRT-PCR. The association between XIST expression and clinicopathological factors, as well as survival rates, was analyzed. The possibility of XIST as a prognostic biomarker for osteosarcoma was examined by Cox proportional hazard regression model. MTT assays were conducted to explore the impact of XIST overexpression on the proliferation of osteosarcoma cells.The results showed that XIST was significantly up-regulated in osteosarcoma tissues and cell lines, and high XIST expression was significantly associated with advanced tumor size (p=0.009), advanced clinical stage (p=0.001) and present distant metastasis (p=0.009). Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that increased XIST expression was associated with poor overall survival of patients. Univariate and multivariate analysis suggested that XIST expression was an independent prognostic factor for the survival of patients with osteosarcoma. Furthermore, we found that knockdown of XIST significantly suppressed the proliferation of osteosarcoma cells in vitro.XIST was suggested to have a tumor promoter effect, and thus, to be a predictor of outcome in patients with osteosarcoma.

We studied the relationship between the occurrence of laterally spreading tumors (LSTs) and the activation of Wnt/β-catenin/c-myc pathway.20 cases of colorectal polypoid adenomas (PAs) tissue sample, 20 cases of LSTs tissue sample and 20 cases of colorectal cancer tissue sample were acquired, and positive expression of Wnt/β-catenin/c-myc proteins were detected by immunohistochemical staining. In addition, relative expression levels of mRNA and protein were measured using RT-PCR and Western blotting method.The positive expression levels of Wnt/β-catenin/c-myc protein in the colorectal cancer group were higher than that in LST group, and the value of the PAs group was the lowest; differences were statistically significant (p0.05). The relative expression levels of Wnt/β-catenin/c-myc mRNA and protein in colorectal cancer group were higher than that in LST group, and the value of PAs group was the lowest; differences were statistically significant (p0.05).The activation level of the Wnt/β-catenin/c-myc pathway has a close relation to the occurrence and deterioration of LSTs.

The long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) study has gradually become one of the hot topics in the field of RNA biology. However, little is known about the pathological role of lncRNA TUG1 in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) patients. This study attempted to investigate the association of lncRNA TUG1 expression with progression and prognosis in ccRCC patients.Using qRT-PCR, the expression of TUG1 was measured in 203 ccRCC tissues and 45 adjacent non-cancerous tissues. Then, the relationships between TUG1 level and the clinicopathological factors of patients with ccRCC were analyzed. The prognostic significance was evaluated using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses.The relative level of TUG1was significantly higher in ccRCC tissues compared to the adjacent non-tumor tissues (p0.01). Furthermore, TUG1 was associated significantly with histological grade, tumor stage, lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis (all p0.05). Interestingly, Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that higher TUG1 expression levels were associated with a shorter overall survival (p0.001) in ccRCC patients. Cox proportional hazards analysis showed that high TUG1 expression was an independent prognostic marker of poor outcome.These findings suggested that TUG1 may act as a tumor promoter in ccRCC and could serve as a potential therapeutic target for this tumor.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is typically caused by trauma or disease, and it severely affects patients' motor function. The relationship between signal transducers and activators of transcription-1 (STAT1) and neuronal death after cerebral focal ischemia has been comprehensively studied, but its role in SCI remains largely unknown. This study investigated the protective effect of an STAT1 inhibitor on SCI. Thirty SD rats were SCI-induced and were then randomly divided into two groups (N = 15 each), either receiving STAT1 or the STAT1 inhibitor S1491 by intraperitoneal injection. The motor dysfunction of the rats was evaluated by behavioral scores, followed by the examination of SCI by hematoxylin and eosin staining. Apoptosis was also detected by Western blot and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end-labeling (TUNEL) assay. The motor functions of rats receiving STAT1 did not score as well as the STAT1 inhibitor group (P < 0.01). Further assays showed remarkable improvements in pathological damage to spinal code tissue in STAT1 inhibitor-treated rats, along with lower Bax and higher Bcl-2 expression. The STAT1 inhibitor also suppressed the occurrence of TUNEL-positive cells compared to the STAT1-treated group. In summary, we suggest that the STAT1 inhibitor alleviates SCI by decreasing apoptosis.

To explore the biological effect of prostate peripheral zones (PZs) stromal cells on the proliferation of prostate cells by overexpression of LMO2 gene.Genes expressional distinction of different prostate stromal cells was screened by gene expression arrays. To validate the microarray data, real time-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), Western blotting analysis were used to check the over expression of LMO2 in PZs cells.To compare the effect of stromal cells which overexpressed LMO2 gene on in vitro proliferation ability of BPH-1 and PC3 cell lines, cell proliferation was measured by CCK-8 and EdU assay. Cytokines chip was used to screen expression of cytokines in WPMY-1-LMO2 conditioned medium. The changes of BPH-1 and PC3 proliferation associated proteins were assessed by Western blotting.A total of 512 genes were identified as markedly differentially expressed in stromal cells originated from different zones. Among these genes, LMO2 gene was overexpression in peripheral zones stromal cells, and confirmed by RT-PCR and Western blotting. Expression level of LMO2 gene was significantly up-regulated in peripheral zones stromal cells compared with transitional zones stromal cells, increased by 3.36 folds on average (P0.01). The proliferation of both PC3 and BPH-1 were found increased and STAT3 phosphorylation and CCND1 expression were increased after cultured in conditioned medium from stromal cells which stably expressed LMO2. Cytokines chip found increased FGF-9 and IL-11 expression in the medium supernatant reserved from LMO2-overexpressed stromal cell line.Distinct gene expression exists among prostate stromal cells originated from different zones. LMO2 overexpressed stromal cells can induce prostate epithelial cell growth via paracrine of FGF-9, IL-11 or other cytokines.

It remains unclear whether indomethacin (INDO) and/or surgical ligation (LIGATE) are necessary to improve outcomes in premature infants with a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). We have adopted a conservative approach to PDA management that emphasizes waiting for spontaneous closure unless certain cardiorespiratory distress criteria are met.This was a before-after observational study in infants born 501 to 1,500 g in two distinct epochs. Era 1 (January 2005 to December 2007) featured traditional management with INDO and LIGATE used early to close all moderate and large PDAs in infants receiving any respiratory support. Era 2 (January 2008 to June 2009) emphasized modest fluid restriction, watchful waiting and limited INDO and LIGATE to only those infants with large PDAs who met certain cardiorespiratory distress criteria.Era 1 included 139 infants with a PDA, mean (s.d.) gestational age 27.5 (2) weeks; Era 2 72 infants, mean (s.d.) gestational age 27.5 (2) weeks. In Era 2, INDO use significantly decreased (79% of infants to 26%, P0.001), and 28 day total fluids decreased (140 vs. 130 ml kg(-1) day(-1), P0.001). LIGATE rate was 45% in Era 1, 33% in Era 2 (P=0.11). There were no significant differences in supplemental oxygen, nasal continuous positive airway pressure, or mechanical ventilation days. There were no significant differences in mortality or individual morbidities. The combined outcome of chronic lung disease (CLD) or mortality after Day 7 significantly increased (Era 1, 40%, Era 2, 54%, P=0.04). More infants were discharged home with a PDA in Era 2, but most resolved spontaneously and the need for closure therapy after discharge from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) did not increase. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated Era 2 management did not predict an increased risk of one or more interlinked morbidities.Tolerance of the PDA with watchful waiting for spontaneous closure, modest fluid reduction, and less INDO use is a reasonable treatment strategy that is not associated with significant changes in NICU mortality or individual morbidities. We did note an increase in the combined outcome of CLD or mortality after Day 7, thus our investigation supports the urgency of a randomized controlled trial comparing traditional PDA management with a true control group similar to our Era 2 management to answer important questions of short and long-term outcomes.

Ti0.8Si0.2N films were synthesized by an inductively coupled plasma-assisted magnetron sputtering at deposition temperature lower than 200°C. The effects of the incident ion to Ti+Si flux ratio (0.14⩽Ji∕JTi+Si⩽10), with the ion energy constant at ∼20eV, on film growth, microstructure, and morphology were investigated by x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscope. All films have slightly higher than 50at.% of N content. The film deposited by only magnetron sputtering with Ji∕JTi+Si=0.14 is amorphous with a columnar structure. With the addition of inductively coupled plasma, the as-deposited films become crystalline. The preferred orientation evolves from (111) to (200) with the increase in Ji∕JTi+Si. Gossypium species represent a vast resource of genetic multiplicity for the improvement of cultivated cotton. To determine genetic diversity and relationships within a diverse collection of Gossypium, we employed 120 SSR primers on 20 diploid species representing seven basic genome groups of the genus Gossypium, five AD allotetraploid cotton accessions while T. populnea served as an outgroup species. Out of 120 SSR primers, 49 pairs are polymorphic, which produced a total of 99 distinct alleles with an average of 2.0 alleles per primer pair. A total of 1139 major SSR bands were observed. Genetic similarities among all the diploid species ranged from 0.582 (between G. herbaceum and G. trilobum) up to 0.969 (between G. arboreum and G. herbaceum). Phylogenetic trees based on genetic similarities were consistent with known taxonomic relationships. The results also indicated that G. raimondii is the closest living relative of the ancestral D-genome donor of tetraploid species and the A-genome donor is much similar to the present-day G. herbaceum and G. arboreum. Ancient tetraploid cotton species were formed by hybridizing and chromosome doubling between them, then different tetraploid cotton species appeared by further geographical and genetic isolation and separating differentiation. The results showed that SSRs could be an ideal means for the identification of the genetic diversity and relationship of cotton resources at the genomic level.

X-ray variability of the microquasar XTE J1550-564 is studied with time domain techniques for the data from the RXTE/PCA observation in September 8, 1998. The 2--60 keV averaged shot is obtained from superposing shots with one millisecond time bin through aligning their peaks. The spectral behavior during the averaged shot exhibits prominent differences from that observed in Cyg X-1. The hardness ratio of (13--60 keV)/(2--13 keV) or (16--60 keV)/(13--16 keV) during a shot is lower or higher than that of steady emission respectively. The correlation coefficient between intensity and hardness ratio of (13--60 keV)/(2--13 keV) or (16--60 keV)/(13--16 keV) is negative or positive respectively. A well-known contradiction in phase-locked frequency synthesizer design is between frequency resolution, on the one hand, and bandwidth of the phase-locked loop (PLL), on the other. To solve this problem, a technique that uses an algorithm that produces a group of different divide numbers to the programmable feedback frequency divider of PLL for each required output frequency is presented. The interference frequency at the output of the phase detector of PLL and the frequency resolution can then be set independent of each other. High resolution and wide bandwidth are achieved simultaneously, with a simple synthesizer design leading to savings in power consumed and device cost. >

To evaluate the relationship between enteral water infusion for hypernatremia and significant intestinal morbidity in infantsor=1000 grams.This is a retrospective study of 321 infantsor=1000 g birth weight. Infants were grouped by the highest serum sodium (mmol/l) during the first 14 days of life as follows:150 (normal control),or=150 (high sodium control),or=150 and treated with sterile water (study group). Significant intestinal morbidity was defined as probable or proven necrotizing enterocolitis or spontaneous intestinal perforation. Statistical analysis included Student's t test for continuous variables and chi(2) with Yeats correction for frequency variables. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was then performed to evaluate confounding variables among groups.The incidence of intestinal morbidity was significantly higher in the high sodium-water treated group compared to each of the other groups (13/33 (38%) for high sodium-water versus 16/100 (16%) for high sodium control and 18/188 (10%) for normal sodium control, P0.01 chi(2)). Logistic regression analysis indicated that enteral water and hydrocortisone were risk factors for significant intestinal morbidity.Enteral sterile water for hypernatremia appears to be associated with significant intestinal morbidity in infantsor=1000 g. Hydrocortisone is also a risk factor.

The production of arachidonic acid was studied in the fungus Mortierella alpina using an inexpensive medium. Glucose derived from maize starch hydrolysate was the sole carbon source and defatted soybean meal and sodium nitrate were the nitrogen sources. Optimal arachidonic acid yield (1.47 g l(-1)) was observed at a glucose concentration of 100 g l(-1). Various treatments of defatted soybean meal to extract soluble nitrogen nutrients were evaluated. Alkali extract was the most effective for arachidonic acid production. A mixture of soybean alkali-extract protein and sodium nitrate was an excellent nitrogen source for fungal growth, lipid accumulation, and arachidonic acid production. A maximum yield of 1.87 g arachidonic acid l(-1) was obtained with a soybean protein concentration of 4.6 g l(-1) and a sodium nitrate concentration of 2.3 g l(-1).

The China Grand Canal is one of the earliest canals in the world, having lasted for nearly 3000 years. Even its section canals have a rich history, such as the North-South Grand Canal that was established during the Sui Dynasty, whereas the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal was excavated during the Yuan Dynasty and the east line of the South-to-North Water Diversion. As one of the longest in the world, the China Grand Canal's total length is over 3500 kilometers. This length includes the navigable, unnavigable, and underground sections. Making the best use of situations and according to local conditions, the Chinese people harmoniously constructed the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal with nature. Tens of millions of workers took nearly 3000 years to complete the great shipping system. Navigable sections still exist for up to 900 kilometers and the volume of freight traffic is approximately 300 million tons. The canal remains the main logistical channel of the North-to-South Coal Transportation, South-to-North Water Diversion, and resources circulation. To date, China is promoting the success of heritage application. Part of these efforts is the declaration of the China Grand Canal as a World Cultural Heritage by 2014. In addition, the east route of the South-to-North Water Transfer project is planned to be navigable by 2016. The ancient Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal will usher in the new ecological civilization and cultural revival along the canal. This paper presents technical methods of water environment evolution research on the river system, river, and water quality along the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal through the integration of historical literature and modern remote sensing image data. The study carried out water environment investigation and analysis along the Beijing-Hangzhou canal by using ETM, SPOT image data, and GPS measurement data. Spatial and temporal evolution characteristics and regulations of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal regional water environment in the span of 3000 years were obtained. As a key national cultural relic, candidate of the world cultural heritage, and route of the South-to-North Water Diversion, the China Great Canal is a worthy subject of a study. Results presented in this paper therefore have high realistic significance.

An anthracnose disease was observed on stems of high-bush blueberry plants (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) in Liaoning Province, China in 2012. The typical symptoms consist of sudden wilting and dieback of stems during the growing season. Dark brown lesions originate from infected buds and kill portions of the stems. Lesions have grayish white centers, with the necrotic areas becoming 6 to 8 cm in length. Disinfected stem pieces were placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 28°C for 5 to 7 days, after which the emerging colonies were transferred to fresh PDA. All isolates initially produced white growth, but turned pink after 7 days before becoming blackish green. The average colony diameter was 65.5 to 75.0 mm after 7 days. Conidia were aseptate, hyaline, fusiform to ellipsoid, 8.5 to 16.5 × 2.5 to 4.0 μm in size and single celled with two to seven oil globules. Setae were not found on the acervuli. These characteristics matched published descriptions of Colletotrichum acutatum (1) (teleomorph Glomerella acutata). Pathogenicity test was confirmed in 15 2-year-old healthy potted plants of cv. Berkeley. Stems of 10 plants were punctured with flamed needles and sprayed with 5 ml of conidial suspension (106 conidia per ml in sterile distilled water) of isolate LNSW1. Five control plants were inoculated with sterile distilled water. Seven days after inoculation, eight of the 10 blueberry plants exhibited stem lesions, leaf chlorosis, followed by branch dieback 15 days post-inoculation. The symptoms were similar to those observed on diseased plants in the field, and no lesions were observed on control plants. The pathogen was reisolated from the margin of lesions and identified by colony growth characteristics on PDA. PCR amplification of one isolate (LNSW1) was carried out by utilizing the universal rDNA-ITS primer pair ITS1/ITS4. The sequence (557 bp) of isolate LNSW1 (GenBank Accession No. JX392857) showed 99% identity to G. acutata (AB443950) and C. acutatum (AJ749672) in a BLAST search. An approximately 490-bp fragment was amplified from LNSW1 by the species-specific primer pair CaInt2/ITS4 (2). The pathogen was identified as G. acutata (asexual stage: C. acutatum J.H. Simmonds) on the basis of morphological characters, rDNA-ITS sequence analysis, and a PCR product with species-specific primers. In October 2011, a new disease of dragon fruit (Hylocereus costaricensis) was discovered in a fruit market in Yuanjiang, Yunnan Province, China. Small, light brown, water-soaked spots appeared initially and then coalesced, extending to the entire fruit in 6 days. Hyaline hyphae and light brown sporangia were observed over the entire surface of the infected fruit. On potato sucrose agar (PSA) the fungus produced a white, appressed colony that covered a 9-cm diameter petri dish in less than 5 days at 25°C. The sporangiophores were hyaline, light brown to grayish, 44.71 to 143.14 (average = 85.10) μm long, and arose directly from the non-septate substrate hyphae. The sporangia were spherical, single, and terminal and yellow-brown to brown when young turning to dark brown or black at maturity. Both the sporangiophores and sporangia were covered with calcium oxalate crystals. When mounted in a drop of water, the sporangium immediately broke longitudinally into two halves, releasing the spores and exposing a large pyriform columella at the tip of the sporangiophore. The spores were mostly globose to ellipsoid, aseptate, and 5.15 (3.71 to 7.86) × 6.30 (4.08 to 9.19) μm (n = 300). Two to three slender, hyaline appendages were attached to the ends of the spores. The cardinal growth temperatures of the pathogen were 10, 30, and 40°C and it grew faster in the dark than under 12-h alternating light-dark cycles. The fungus was identified as Gilbertella persicaria (1). To confirm the identification, the internal transcribed spacer region of the nuclear rDNA of one isolate was amplified using the fungal primers ITS1 and ITS4. The nucleotide sequence (Accession No. JQ951601) showed 98% homology with G. persicaria in GenBank (HM999958). Pathogenicity tests were carried out on two species of dragon fruit, H. costaricensis and H. undatus, by placing a 6-mm diameter young mycelial PSA agar disc on the surface of an asymptomatic fruit, either unwounded or wounded with a sterile needle. As the control, a plain PSA disc was used. Each inoculated fruit was placed in a moist chamber and incubated at 25°C. Three fruits were used per treatment and the experiment was repeated twice. The fruits rotted in 2 to 3 days, and the disease was especially serious on wounded fruits and on H. costaricensis. The fungus was reisolated from infected fruits. The controls did not show any disease symptoms. Inoculation studies were also made on other fruits but rot was produced only on peach, pear, and wounded tomato. To our knowledge, this is the first record of dragon fruit rot caused by G. persicaria. The fungus had been reported in China but caused no diseases (2). In India, it caused fruit rot of pear, tomato, and peach (3). To minimize the disease, dragon fruit should be stored at low temperature and in uncovered containers. References: (1) G. L. Benny. The ablative effect of argon laser delivered fibreoptically in vitro on 234 segments of atherosclerotic human aorta was studied. The variables such as energy density, type of atheroma and immersion media were included, and all irradiated specimens were subsequently submitted to histological examination and crater volumes in mm3 to micrometer measurements under light microscope. The results showed 1) a linear relationship between energy dose and crater volume in fibrous atheroma, 2) significantly greater damage or surrounding in the higher energy dose groups, 3) a lower dose response in calcified tissue than in fatty streaks or fibrous atheroma, and 4) immersion of tissue in blood during ablation resulted in a significantly greater dose response than immersion in plasma or saline, and the corresponding surrounding tissue damage was greatest when immersed in blood. Thus, argon laser is both effective and predictable in response during ablating of atheromatous tissue. The efficacy of the process is dependent on immersion medium, while the degree of surrounding tissue damage is dependent on energy dose.

Pretreatment of mice with moxibustion (Mox) modulated lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced endogenous cytotoxic factor (CF) and interferon (IFN) production in serum. CF was measured by the L929 cytotoxicity test and IFN by the cytopathic effect microassay on L929 cells with vesicular stomatitis virus. Significant inhibition of CF activity was observed when Mox and LPS were applied simultaneously. Its potentiation was maximal, about 9 times the control level, when treatment intervals between Mox and LPS were 24-72 hours, and declined thereafter. Mox treatment modified LPS-induced IFN production with a similar biphasic pattern but the onset of modification was delayed. This is the first report of modulation of cytokine production by Mox treatment.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to examine the rate of cytomegalovirus (CMV) shedding through breast feeding and the rate of acquired infection by the infants. Among the 104 seropositive breast-feeding mothers, CMV was recovered in the milk in 19 cases, with a milk shedding rate of 18.3%. Isolation of CMV from the urine of the infants of the 188 seropositive mothers found 36 positive cases. Of the 36 cases, 15 of 19 fed on CMV-positive milk were infected through breast-feeding, with an infection rate of 78.9%; 11 of the 85 fed on CMV-negative milk were infected, the infection rate being 12.9%; and 10 (11.9%) of 84 fed on cow's milk were infected. These demonstrate that the rate of infection in infants fed on virus-positive milk was significantly higher than those fed on virus-negative milk or cow's milk (P less than 0.005).
