Startup companies solve many of today’s most complex and challenging scientific, technical and social problems, such as the decarbonisation of the economy, air pollution, and the development of novel life-saving vaccines. Startups are a vital source of social, scientific and economic innovation, yet the most innovative are also the least likely to survive. The probability of success of startups has been shown to relate to several firm-level factors such as industry, location and the economy of the day. Still, attention has increasingly considered internal factors relating to the firm’s founding team, including their previous experiences and failures, their centrality in a global network of other founders and investors as well as the team’s size. The effects of founders’ personalities on the success of new ventures are mainly unknown. Here we show that founder personality traits are a significant feature of a firm’s ultimate success. We draw upon detailed data about the success of a large-scale global sample of startups (n=26,781). We found that the Big 5 personality traits of startup founders across 30 dimensions significantly differed from that of the population at large. We can train a classifier to distinguish founders from employees with 82.5% accuracy. Key personality facets that distinguish successful entrepreneurs include a preference for variety, novelty and starting new things (openness to adventure), like being the centre of attention (lower levels of modesty) and being exuberant (higher activity levels). However, we do not find one “Founder-type” personality; instead, six different personality types appear, with startups founded by a “Hipster, Hacker and Hustler” being twice as likely to succeed. Our results also demonstrate the benefits of larger, personality-diverse teams in startups, which has the potential to be extended through further research into other team settings within business, government and research.

Primary sarcomatoid carcinoma (SCA) is a type of rare tumor consisting of both malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. Only 32 cases of SCA of the small bowel have been reported in the literature to date. Due to its rarity and complexity, this cancer has not been genetically studied and its diagnosis and treatment remain difficult. Here we report a 54-year-old male underwent emergency surgical resection in the small intestine due to severe obstruction and was diagnosed with multiple SCA based on postoperative pathological examination. Over 100 polypoid tumors scattered along his whole jejunum and proximal ileum. Chemotherapy (IFO+Epirubicin) was performed after surgery while the patient died two months after the surgery due to severe malnutrition. Whole-exome sequencing was performed for the tumor tissue with normal tissue as the control. Important cancer-related gene mutations, including KRAS (c.37G>T, p.G13C), TP53 (c.871A>T, p.K291*), EGFR (c.1351C>T, p.R451C), and CDKN2A (c.104_138del, p.G35fs), were found among 286 nonsynonymous somatic mutations (SNV and Indel). Copy-number amplified genes mainly gathered in chromosome 6, 7, 16 and 20. Mutation clustering analysis showed that main genetic abnormalities included DNA methylation, DNA alkylation, cellular homeostasis, and shared similarities with melanoma, glioma, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, and pancreatic cancer. In summary, the genomic features of the small intestine SCA were explored at whole-exome level for the first time, and over 200 somatic mutations were identified in the tumor tissue. Key tumor driver gene mutations were revealed, as well as several aberrant functional pathways. These results contribute to further understanding of the pathogenesis and molecular mechanism of this rare tumor.

BackgroundBrain metastasis (BM) frequently occurs in HER2-positive breast cancer (BC) patients, but the risk factors of BM in this type of patients are still unknown. Our study aims to assess the risk factors of BM and prognostic analysis in HER2-positive BC patients.MethodsUnivariate analysis used t-test, chi-square test, and Fisher’s exact test to find out the risk factors for BM, and multivariable analysis was done with stepwise logistic regression analysis. Prognostic data analysis was estimated by the Kaplan–Meier method.ResultsA total of 228 HER2-positive BC patients were included, of whom 214 patients were postoperative metastatic patients and 14 patients were de novo stage IV patients. Through comparing the stratified variables between 51 postoperative metastatic patients with BM and 163 postoperative metastatic patients without BM, the multivariate analysis showed that age ≤40 years (OR 2.321, 95% CI: 1.089 to 4.948) and first metastatic site with lung metastasis (OR 2.168, 95% CI: 1.099 to 4.274) were independent risk factors for BM in HER2-positive BC patients. Prognostic data of all 65 HER2-positive BC patients with BM showed that the time from the diagnosis of BC to the development of breast cancer brain metastasis (BCBM) was 36.3 months (95% CI: 30.0 to 42.1 months). The time from the diagnosis of first recurrence and metastasis stage to the diagnosis of BCBM was 11.35 months (95% CI: 7.1 to 18.4 months). The time from the diagnosis of BCBM to the time of follow-up was 24.1 months (95% CI: 13.9 to 37.5 months). Up until the time of follow-up data, a total of 38 patients had died, and the time from the diagnosis of BM of these 38 patients to death was 11.0 months (95% CI: 9.0 to 20.4 months).ConclusionThe prognosis of HER2-positive BC patients with BM was poor due to the lack of effective treatments for BM. Age ≤40 years and first metastatic site with lung metastasis were the independent risk factors for BM in HER2-positive BC patients. Future research about pre-emptive medical interventions may help to improve the prognosis of HER2-positive BC patients with high risk to develop BM.

SiC and Ga2O3 are promising wide band gap semiconductors for applications in power electronics because of their high breakdown electric field and normally off operation. However, lack of a suitable dielectric material that can provide high interfacial quality remains a problem. This can potentially lead to high leakage current and conducting loss. In this work, we present a novel atomic layer deposition process to grow epitaxially MgxCa1−xO dielectric layers on 4H-SiC(0001) and β-Ga2O3 $\left( {\bar 201} \right)$ substrates. By tuning the composition of MgxCa1−xO toward the substrate lattice constant, better interfacial epitaxy can be achieved. The interfacial and epitaxy qualities were investigated and confirmed by cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction studies. Mg0.72Ca0.28O film showed the highest epitaxy quality on 4H-SiC(0001) because of its closest lattice match with the substrate. Meanwhile, highly textured Mg0.25Ca0.75O films can be grown on β-Ga2O3 $\left( {\bar 201} \right)$ with a preferred orientation of (111).

Until recently, sorafenib has been the only treatment approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Some patients, however, exhibit resistance to this treatment and subsequently experience cancer progression, recurrence, or death. Therefore, identifying a new alternative treatment for patients with little or no response to sorafenib treatment is vital. In this study, we explored the therapeutic potential and underlying molecular mechanism of antrocinol ((3aS,4R,6aS,10aR)-4-(hydroxymethyl)-7,7-dimethyldecahydro-1H-naphtho[1,8a-c]furan-1-one) in patients with HCC. The results indicated that antrocinol was more therapeutically effective than antrocin, Stivarga, and sorafenib against HCC cell lines. Antrocinol also substantially suppressed the expression of KRAS-GTP, p-MEK1/2, p-ERK1/2, and p-AKT in the Huh7 cell line. Additionally, antrocinol-induced apoptosis in the Huh7 cell line, inhibited the formation of tumorspheres, and suppressed the expression of cancer stem cell markers CD133, KLF4, CD44, OCT4, SOX2, and c-Myc. Animal studies revealed that antrocinol alone considerably suppressed tumor growth in nonobese diabetic/severe combined immunodeficient mice inoculated with Huh7 tumorspheres. It also synergistically enhanced the anticancer effect of sorafenib, resulting in enhanced suppression of tumor growth (p 0.001) and tumorsphere formation (p 0.001). In tumor samples resected from mice treated with antrocinol alone or in combination with sorafenib, immunohistochemical analysis revealed an increase in BAX expression and a decrease in ERK and AKT protein expression. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the anti-HCC activity of antrocinol. With its higher therapeutic efficacy than that of sorafenib, antrocinol is a candidate drug for patients with HCC who demonstrate little or no response to sorafenib treatment.

BACKGROUND: Accurate prognostic estimation for esophageal cancer (EC) patients plays an important role in the process of clinical decision-making. The objective of this study was to develop an effective model to predict the 5-year survival status of EC patients using machine learning (ML) algorithms. METHODS: We retrieved the information of patients diagnosed with EC between 2010 and 2015 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program, including 24 features. A total of 8 ML models were applied to the selected dataset to classify the EC patients in terms of 5-year survival status, including 3 newly developed gradient boosting models (GBM), XGBoost, CatBoost, and LightGBM, 2 commonly used tree-based models, gradient boosting decision trees (GBDT) and random forest (RF), and 3 other ML models, artificial neural networks (ANN), naive Bayes (NB), and support vector machines (SVM). A 5-fold cross-validation was used in model performance measurement. RESULTS: After excluding records with missing data, the final study population comprised 10,588 patients. Feature selection was conducted based on the χ(2) test, however, the experiment results showed that the complete dataset provided better prediction of outcomes than the dataset with removal of non-significant features. Among the 8 models, XGBoost had the best performance [area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC): 0.852 for XGBoost, 0.849 for CatBoost, 0.850 for LightGBM, 0.846 for GBDT, 0.838 for RF, 0.844 for ANN, 0.833 for NB, and 0.789 for SVM]. The accuracy and logistic loss of XGBoost were 0.875 and 0.301, respectively, which were also the best performances. In the XGBoost model, the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) value was calculated and the result indicated that the four features: reason no cancer-directed surgery, Surg Prim Site, age, and stage group had the greatest impact on predicting the outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The XGBoost model and the complete dataset can be used to construct an accurate prognostic model for patients diagnosed with EC which may be applicable in clinical practice in the future.

Bhutanitis thaidina is an endemic, rare, and protected swallowtail in China. Deforestation, habitat fragmentation, illegal commercialised capture, and exploitation of larval food plants are believed to be the four major causes of population decline of B. thaidina in the recent decade. However, little attention was paid to the impact of climate change. This study used ecological niche factor analysis and species distribution model to analyse the current suitable areas for B. thaidina with BioClim variables as well as its future suitable areas under four future climate scenarios (represented by four Representative Concentration Pathways: RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0, and RCP8.5). Statistical analysis was carried out to compare the possible area and altitude changes to the distribution of B. thaidina under changing climate. Our analyses showed that the suitable areas for B. thaidina are fragmented under the current climate, with four suitable centres in northwestern Yunnan, northeastern Yunnan and northwestern Guizhou, the western margin of Sichuan Basin, and Qinling mountains. Apart from further habitat fragmentation under climate change, slight range expansion (average 6.0–8.9%) was detected under the RCP2.6 and RCP4.5 scenarios, while more range contraction (average 1.3–26.9%) was detected under the RCP6.0 and RCP8.5 scenarios, with the two southern suitable centres suffering most. Also, a tendency of contraction (2,500–3,500 m) and upslope shift (~600 m) in suitable altitude range were detected. The findings of this study supported the climate-vulnerable hypothesis of B. thaidina, especially under future climate like the RCP6.0 and RCP8.5 scenarios, in terms of contraction in suitable areas and altitude ranges. Conservation priority should be given to northwestern Yunnan, northeastern Yunnan, and northwestern Guizhou to alleviate the stress of massive habitat loss and extinction. Refugial areas should be established in all four suitable centres to maintain genetic diversity of B. thaidina in China.

Axillary lymph node dissection is the standard surgical procedure for breast cancer patients with sentinel lymph node (SLN) positive. In clinical practice, axillary lymph node dissection may be an unnecessary treatment for some breast cancer patients with non-sentinel lymph node (NSLN) negative. The aim of this study was to analyze the risk factors of NSLN metastasis in breast cancer patients with SLN positive. Four hundred fifty-six clinical early stage breast cancer patients with SLN positive were collected and analyzed in the oncological surgery department of Fujian Provincial Hospital during 2013 to 2018. All these patients underwent surgical treatment. The average age and tumor size of 443 patients with SLN positive breast cancer were (49.8 ± 10.8) years and (2.42 ± 0.94) cm. Univariate analysis showed that the size of primary tumor, the number of positive SLN, the number of negative SLN, the ratio of positive SLNs, and the type of metastases in SLN were the influencing factors of NSLN metastasis. Multivariate regression analysis showed that primary tumor size T2 cm (P.001, OR = 2.609), the positive number of SLNs ≥3 (P = .002, OR = 5.435), the ratio of positive SLNs ≥ 50% (P = .017, OR = 1.770), and SLN macrometastases (P0.001, OR = 16.099) were independent risk factors for NSLN metastasis. Combined with the 4 independent risk factors, the area under the curve to predict NSLN metastasis was 0.7470.7. For clinical early breast cancer with positive SLN, primary tumor size T2 cm,the positive number of SLNs ≥ 3, the ratio of positive SLNs ≥ 50%, and SLN macrometastases could predict NSLN metastasis well, and guide surgery to avoid overtreatment.

Evidence for effects of PM

Ever since the web began, the number of websites has been growing exponentially. These websites cover an ever-increasing range of online services that fill a variety of social and economic functions across a growing range of industries. Yet the networked nature of the web, combined with the economics of preferential attachment, increasing returns and global trade, suggest that over the long run a small number of competitive giants are likely to dominate each functional market segment, such as search, retail and social media. Here we perform a large scale longitudinal study to quantify the distribution of attention given in the online environment to competing organisations. In two large online social media datasets, containing more than 10 billion posts and spanning more than a decade, we tally the volume of external links posted towards the organisations’ main domain name as a proxy for the online attention they receive. We also use the Common Crawl dataset—which contains the linkage patterns between more than a billion different websites—to study the patterns of link concentration over the past three years across the entire web. Lastly, we showcase the linking between economic, financial and market data by exploring the relationships between online attention on social media and the growth in enterprise value in the electric carmaker Tesla. Our analysis shows that despite the fact that we observe consistent growth in all the macro indicators—the total amount of online attention, in the number of organisations with an online presence, and in the functions they perform—we also observe that a smaller number of organisations account for an ever-increasing proportion of total user attention, usually with one large player dominating each function. These results highlight how evolution of the online economy involves innovation, diversity, and then competitive dominance.

The radiation hardness of AlGaN/GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) is found to improve with increasing GaN channel thickness. Epitaxial MgCaO shows promise as a radiation-tolerant gate dielectric, with only small shifts in operating parameters of metal–oxide–semiconductor HEMTs observed at doses up to 1 Mrad(SiO 2 ). Bias-induced electron trapping and radiation-induced-hole trapping can occur in the MgCaO, depending on the applied bias during stress and/or irradiation. AC transconductance measurements are used to help understand charge trapping in these devices.

Epitaxially grown La-based oxide has shown promise as a gate dielectric for GaAs substrate materials with a low interface trap density in the mid to low $10^{11}$ cm $^{\mathrm {-2}}$ eV $^{\mathrm {-1}}$ range. Total ionizing dose (TID) effects have been studied on GaAs MOSFETs with Al2O3/La2O3 and Al2O3/La1.8Y0.2O3 gate oxides. Charge trapping mechanisms in GaAs MOSFETs are studied by the AC transconductance dispersion method. Al2O3/La2O3 gated devices show a combination of electron and hole trapping, whereas Al2O3/La1.8Y0.2O3 gated devices show primarily hole trapping.

We demonstrate for the first time that a single-crystalline epitaxial MgxCa1–xO film can be deposited on gallium nitride (GaN) by atomic layer deposition (ALD). By adjusting the ratio between the amounts of Mg and Ca in the film, a lattice matched MgxCa1–xO/GaN(0001) interface can be achieved with low interfacial defect density. High-resolution X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the lattice parameter of this ternary oxide nearly obeys Vegard’s law. An atomically sharp interface from cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the high quality of the epitaxy. High-temperature capacitance–voltage characterization showed that the film with composition Mg0.25Ca0.75O has the lowest interfacial defect density. With this optimal oxide composition, a Mg0.25Ca0.75O/AlGaN/GaN metal–oxide–semiconductor high-electron-mobility (MOS-HEMT) device was fabricated. An ultrahigh on/off ratio of 1012 and a near ideal SS of 62 mV/dec were achieved with this device.

Many microelectronic devices require thin films of silver or gold as wiring layers. We report silver(i) and gold(i) bicyclic amidinate complexes, wherein the constrained ligand geometry lessens the propensity for thermal decomposition. These new volatile compounds provide metallic films of silver and gold during CVD with hydrogen below 230 °C.

Evidence for effects of PM2.5 on systemic oxidative stress in pregnant women is limited, especially in early pregnancy. To estimate the associations between ambient PM2.5 exposures and biomarkers of lipid peroxidation and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in women with normal early pregnancy (NEP) and women with clinically recognized early pregnancy loss (CREPL), 206 early pregnant women who had measurements of serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and T-AOC were recruited from a larger case-control study in Tianjin, China from December 2017 to July 2018. Ambient PM2.5 concentrations of eight single-day lags exposure time windows before blood collection at the women’s residential addresses were estimated using temporally-adjusted land use regression models. Effects of PM2.5 exposures on percentage change in the biomarkers were estimated using multivariable linear regression models adjusted for month, temperature, relative humidity, gestational age and other covariates. Unconstrained distributed lag models were used to estimate net cumulative effects. Increased serum MDA and T-AOC were significantly associated with increases in PM2.5 at several lag exposure time windows in both groups. This paper proposed a new reaction headspace gas chromatographic (HS-GC) method for efficiently quantifying the total starch content in wheat flours. A certain weight of wheat flour was oxidized by potassium dichromate in an acidic condition in a sealed headspace vial. The results show that the starch in wheat flour can be completely transferred to carbon dioxide at the given conditions (at 100 °C for 40 min) and the total starch content in wheat flour sample can be indirectly quantified by detecting the CO2 formed from the oxidation reaction. The data showed that the relative standard deviation of the reaction HS-GC method in the precision test was less than 3.06%, and the relative differences between the new method and the reference method (titration method) were no more than 8.90%. The new reaction HS-GC method is automated, accurate, and can be a reliable tool for determining the total starch content in wheat flours in both laboratory and industrial applications.

In advanced microelectronics, precise design of liner and capping layers become critical, especially when it comes to the fabrication of Cu interconnects with dimensions lower than its mean free path. Herein, we demonstrate that direct-liquid-evaporation chemical vapor deposition (DLE-CVD) of Co is a promising method to make liner and capping layers for nanoscale Cu interconnects. DLE-CVD makes pure, smooth, nanocrystalline, and highly conformal Co films with highly controllable growth characteristics. This process allows full Co encapsulation of nanoscale Cu interconnects, thus stabilizing Cu against diffusion and electromigration. Electrical measurements and high-resolution elemental imaging studies show that the DLE-CVD Co encapsulation layer can improve the reliability and thermal stability of Cu interconnects. Also, with the high conductivity of Co, the DLE-CVD Co encapsulation layer have the potential to further decrease the power consumption of nanoscale Cu interconnects, paving the way for Cu interconnects with higher efficiency in future high-end microelectronics.

Series of novel Schiff's base derivatives have been synthesized by combining 2-(2-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazol-1-yl)ethyl 4-formylbenzoate 5, 6 with aromatic/heterocyclic amine 7a–r, 8, 9a–r in ethanol. All compounds were evaluated for antibacterial assay and inhibition against E. coli FabH. Among the compounds studied, most of the compounds showed effective antibacterial and potential inhibitory activity against E. coli FabH. Compound 10q showed most potent inhibitory activity (IC50 = 2.6883 μM) by binding tightly to the active site of the E. coli FabH receptor with minimum binding energy (ΔGb = −55.3117 kcal mol−1), in which molecular docking study indicated the binding mode was stabilized by one hydrogen bond and five π–π interactions.

Geothermal energy is a kind of sustainable renewable and clean resources. However, when using this energy source, there are serious problems such as excessive tail water discharge and insufficient utilization of geothermal energy. Especially in rural areas, how to use geothermal energy at low cost and efficiently is an urgent problem to be solved. The use of geothermal cascade can reduce the temperature of tail water to a certain extent, make full use of geothermal energy in each temperature section, and increase the utilization rate of geothermal energy. Based on the research status of geothermal cascade utilization at home and abroad, this paper proposes a new type of rural geothermal cascade utilization system, and attempts to analyse this system, and finds that this system can increase the utilization rate of geothermal energy at low cost.

The state’s emphasis on energy conservation and emission reduction has been continuously strengthened, and the use of clean energy has received great attention. As the fourth generation of power technology, fuel cell technology has developed rapidly abroad. Household fuel cells have achieved market-oriented development in Japan. In order to understand the technical applicability of household fuel cells in China, a survey on household living habits and energy consumption in cities and towns was carried out. The application of fuel cells in China was preliminarily analyzed from three aspects: the situation of family members at home, the use of domestic appliances and bathing habits.

Taking a 500,000 t/a straw briquette fuel plant in Baoding area of Hebei Province as an example, this paper establishes a life cycle energy consumption and environmental emission analysis model of straw solid fuel. Based on this model, the energy saving and greenhouse gas emission reduction potential of straw solid particles as typical briquette fuels are quantitatively analyzed. Secondly, the life cycle energy consumption and environmental emissions are analyzed. Finally, from the point of view of energy consumption and environmental emissions, the potential value of environmental impact is calculated by standardization and sensitivity analysis is carried out. The results show that the energy consumption of straw granulation stage (compression molding stage) accounts for the largest proportion in the solid particle manufacturing life cycle, reaching 32.30%. Compared with fossil fuels, solid particles have a large emission reduction advantage, which provides basic data for the utilization of straw solid granular forming fuel.

In this paper, we proposed a joint timing and fractionally-spaced blind equalization algorithm. It adopts Gardner algorithm instead of simple down-sampling in conventional fractionally-spaced equalization in order to overcome the problem of that the filter can’t compensate timing error. The simulations show that the performance of the proposed fractionally-spaced equalization algorithm is better than CMA in different SNR and in different number of channel taps.

A 27-kDa C-terminal fragment of human telomerase reverse transcriptase, hTERTC27, has previously been reported to inhibit the growth and tumorigenicity of HeLa human cervical cancer cells and U87-MG human glioblastoma multiforme cells. However, the antitumor effects of hTERTC27 in hepatoma and its underlying mechanisms are unclear. In the current study, the therapeutic effect of hTERTC27, mediated by recombinant adenovirus, in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was explored in vitro and in vivo to investigate the possible mechanisms. The results indicated that recombinant adenovirus carrying hTERTC27 (rAdv-hTERTC27) effectively inhibited the growth and induced apoptosis of the Hepa 1–6 HCC cells. Dendritic cells transduced with rAdv-hTERTC27 were highly effective at inducing antigen-specific T cell proliferation and increasing the activated cytotoxicity of T cells against Hepa 1–6 cells. HCC was inhibited significantly when a single dose of 5×107 pfu rAdv-hTERTC27 was administered intravenously. In summary, the results of this study demonstrated that rAdv-hTERTC27 may serve as a reagent for intravenous administration when combined with telomerase-based gene therapy and immunotherapy for cancer.

Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of copper and manganese can produce interconnects scaled down to below 10 nm, while enhancing their conductivity and lifetime. CVD using similar super-conformal processes can enable very narrow through-silicon-vias, as well as tiny and robust flexible wires between chips. Silica insulating layers can be made by a super-conformal and rapid atomic layer deposition (ALD) process.

Serum vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD)) may influence serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and bone mineral density (BMD). In the present study, we assessed serum 25OHD concentration and its association with PTH and BMD in urban males from Guiyang (N26.57°), the capital city of Guizhou province, Southwest China. We recruited 634 males aged >20 years from the Guiyang Health Measures Survey, and stratified them into three groups according to age: young (20–39 years), middle aged (40–59 years) and older (60–79 years). We measured serum concentrations of 25OHD, PTH levels and BMD of the lumbar spine (L1–L4), femoral neck and total hip. In addition, we also explored the relationship between 25OHD and lifestyle, socio-economic characteristics and medical history by applying covariance analysis and locally weighted regression plots. The results showed that serum 25OHD was 75 nmol/l in 12·6 % of the subjects. Higher level of serum PTH was detected in relation to lower concentrations of serum 25OHD up to 50 nmol/l. A negative correlation between serum 25OHD and PTH concentrations was observed (r −0·207, P=0·003). Mean concentration of serum PTH increased gradually and plateaued while concentrations of serum 25OHD decreased to 50 nmol/l. Gradual increase in serum PTH was observed as 25OHD concentration was P=0·004). BMD values at all sites were greater in the higher serum 25OHD concentration group. This study shows that low concentrations of serum 25OHD were common in males, and bone health was likely to be improved when serum 25OHD values were between 30 and 50 nmol/l.

hTERTC27, a 27-kDa hTERT C-terminal polypeptide has been demonstrated to cause hTERT-positive HeLa cell apoptosis and inhibits the growth of mouse melanoma. hTERTC27 has been associated with telomere dysfunction, regulation of gene-regulated apoptosis, the cell cycle and activation of natural killer (NK) cells, but its mechanism of action is not fully understood. Here, we report that dendritic cells (DCs) transduced with hTERTC27 can increase T-cell proliferation, and augment the concentration of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in the supernatants of T cells. It can also induce antigen-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) against glioma cells in vitro. Moreover, hTERTC27 gene-transduced DCs exhibit a very potent cytotoxicity to glioma cells in vivo. It could prolong the survival time and inhibit the growth of glioma-bearing mice. These data suggest that hTERTC27 gene-transduced DCs can efficiently enhance immunity against gliomas in vitro and in vivo.

Objectives: This study is to determine if two adipocytokines, adiponectin and visfatin, can be used as diagnosis markers for metabolic syndrome (MS) in Uygur population. Methods: Sixty-two MS patients and 41 control individuals with normal body weights were enrolled in this study. Abdominal subcutaneous and omental adipose tissues were collected for determination of biochemical indices. The adipokines serum levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Blood were collected from the MS patients and the control individuals and extracted proteins and RNAs subjected to western blot analysis and real-time PCR to determine adiponectin and visfatin expression, respectively. Results: ELISA indicated that the serum adiponectin in the MS group was decreased (0.59 ± 0.21 versus 0.49 ± 0.18) in comparison with the control group (P < 0.05). But the serum visfatin in the MS group were increased (1.07 ± 0.41 versus 1.25 ± 0.32) when compared with the control group (P < 0.05). The western blot revealed decreased adiponectin and increased visfatin expression in the MS patients when compared with the normal controls. Further real-time RT-PCR analysis showed that the adiponectin and visfatin expression are altered via a transcriptional mechanism. Conclusions: Adiponectin and visfatin might be used as diagnosis markers of MS in Uygur population.

AIM: To probe into the genetic susceptibility of HLA-DRB1 alleles to esophageal carcinoma in Han Chinese in Hubei Province. METHODS: HLA-DRB1 allele polymorphisms were typed by polymerase chain reaction with sequence-specific primers (PCR-SSP) in 42 unrelated patients with esophageal cancer and 136 unrelated normal control subjects and the associated HLA-DRB1 allele was measured by nucleotide sequence analysis with PCR.SAS software was used in statistics. RESULTS: Allele frequency (AF) of HLA-DRB1*0901 was significantly higher in esophageal carcinoma patients than that in the normal controls (0.2500 vs0.1397, P=0.028, the odds ratio 2.053, etiologic fraction 0.1282). After analyzed the allele nucleotide sequence of HLA-DRB1*0901 which approachs to the corresponded exon 2 sequence of the allele in genebank. There was no association between patients and controls in the rested HLA-DRB1 alleles. CONCLUSION: HLA-DRB1*0901 allele is more common in the patients with esophageal carcinoma than in the healthy controls, which is positively associated with the patients of Hubei Han Chinese. Individuals carrying HLA-DRB1*0901 may be susceptible to esophageal carcinoma.

In order to reduce fatal gas accidents in coal mines in China so as to lessen miner injuries and economic losses, this paper describes a system analysis of fatal gas accidents in coal mines. From management complexity to system dynamic perspective, causes of fatal gas accident are discussed and the approaches to prevent accident are studied. Time delay and feedback effect of organization safety commitment in the system are simulated. The research shows that the time delay and feedback bring up complexity in the coal mine system. With causing mechanism analysis in the process of incident, the authors provides kinds of suggestions for coal mine administrator in decision-making from system dynamics perspective to preventing the fatal accidents, which is helpful in reducing fatal gas accident of mining industry in China.
