12. Generalizing tree–level sap flow across the European continent

Abstract

Sap flow offers key insights about transpiration dynamics and forest-climate interactions. Accurately simulating sap flow remains challenging due to measurement uncertainties and interactions between global and local environmental controls. Addressing these complexities, this study leveraged Long Short-Term Memory networks (LSTMs) with SAPFLUXNET to predict hourly tree-level sap flow across Europe. We built models with diverse training sets to assess performance under previously unseen conditions. The average Kling-Gupta Efficiency was 0.77 for models trained on 50% of time series across all forest stands, and 0.52 for models trained on 50% of the forest stands. Continental models not only matched but surpassed the performance of specialized and baselines for all genera and forest types, showcasing the capacity of LSTMs to effectively generalize across tree genera, climates, and forest ecosystems given minimal inputs. This study underscores the potential of LSTMs in generalizing state-dependent ecohydrological processes and bridging tree level measurements to continental scales.

24. Is leader proactivity enough: Importance of leader competency in shaping team role breadth efficacy and proactive performance

Abstract

The present study is designed to investigate how leader proactive personality and competency jointly relate to team proactivity. Drawing on social cognitive theory, we hypothesize that proactive yet incompetent leaders diminish the magnitude and enhance the dispersion of team role breadth efficacy, defined as the collective confidence to engage in a range of integrative, interpersonal, and proactive tasks, which lowers team proactive performance. The test of the hypotheses, based on two waves of surveys of members of 66 professional work teams and their leaders, reveals three main findings. First, leaders' proactive personality is negatively associated with the magnitude and positively related to the dispersion of team role breadth efficacy when their competency is low. Second, proactive personality is positively associated with the magnitude, but not the dispersion, of team role breadth efficacy if their competency is high. Third, the leader proactivity-competency interactive effect relates positively to team proactive performance, through the mediation of the optimal configuration of team role breadth efficacy (high magnitude + low dispersion). This study thus highlights the need to consider both proactive personality and competency for team management and their implications for leaders' own career success.

A high effective work function and a very low [V.sub.t] Ir gate on HfLaO p-MOSFETs is described by using novel self-aligned low-temperature shallow junctions. The gate-first process has shallow junctions of 9.6 or 20 nm that are formed by solid phase diffusion by using Si[O.sub.2]-covered Ga or Ni/Ga.

Abstract

There are a lot of services and mobile applications that allow simplifying a search, proactively providing information about famous attractions and user feedback; but travelers may have difficulty in choosing based on their real needs. Smart tourism, under the rapid growth of Internet of Things and machine learning techniques is developed for enhancing travellers’ experience and satisfaction. In recent years, it is essential for most tourism industrialists to strengthen their competitive edge and to improve industrial sustainability through the adoption of smart tourism. In this chapter, the proposed model generates travel recommendations and related useful information to end users through an online platform, namely Niche-E-Travel (NET). This distinctive tourism solution aims to collect all the obscure attractions, to align them with visitors’ interests, and to provide them with a new to-do list in Hong Kong. NET collects basic information from end users and uses the proposed travel analytic model with K-modes and K-means clustering methods to finish a clustering process, and provide some potential activity plans to fit the end user’s interests and requirements. Recommendations made for each user are supported by collaborative filtering to compare different users’ personal interests.

Abstract

This paper presents a set of newly developed computer-aided-design-oriented formulas for the evaluation of the quasi-static even- and odd-mode characteristics of conductor-backed coplanar-waveguide (CBCPW) coupled lines. This set of expressions is evaluated using a conformal mapping method based on the assumption of pure transverse-electromagnetic propagation. The result for the odd- and even-mode characteristic impedance and effective dielectric constants computed by these formulas agrees well with the result evaluated from the existing formulas of both Wadell and Hanna. However, the new expressions derived provide a more systematic and efficient method for calculating the essential parameters of CBCPW coupled lines as compared to the existing ones in [1] and [2]. Abstract

The London magnetic dipole moment in a flight-type gyroscope with very-low trapped magnetic flux was studied through ground-based observations. The gyroscope was provided with an ambient magnetic field and the signals generated by the device were detected using three sets of pickup loops coupled to an analog-to-digital converter. Results show that the horizontal component of the London-moment signal is 60% of the total expected London-moment signal and is directly proportional to the gyro spin speed.
