Food waste is a common issue arising from grinding of food by experimental animals, leading to excessive food scraps falling into cages. In the wild, animals grind food by gnawing vegetation and seeds, potentially damaging the ecological environment. However, limited ecology studies have focused on food grinding behavior since the last century, with even fewer on rodent food grinding, particularly recently. Although food grinding’s function is partially understood, its biological purposes remain under-investigated and driving factors unclear. This review aims to explain potential causes of animal food grinding, identify influencing factors, and discuss contexts and limitations. Specifically, we emphasize recent progress on gut microbiota significance for food grinding. Moreover, we show abnormal food grinding is determined by degree of excess normal behavior, emphasizing food grinding is not meaningless. Findings from this review promote comprehensive research on the myriad factors, multifaceted roles, and intricate evolution underlying food grinding behavior, benefiting laboratory animal husbandry and ecological environment protection, and identifying potential physiological benefits yet undiscovered.

Twenty-three novel resveratrol-based cinnamic ester hybrids were designed and synthesized. All the compounds were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory activity using RAW264.7 cells. Among them, compound D15 was found to be the most potent one in inhibiting NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. The further study indicated that compound D15 could suppress expression of proteins iNOS, COX-2, p-p65, and p-IκB LPS-induced. Immunofluorescence further revealed compound D15 could reduce activation p65 in nuclei. All the results indicated that the anti-inflammatory activity of title compound may partly due to its inhibitory effect on the NF-κB signaling pathway.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of standard rescue procedure (SRP) in improving severe trauma treatments in China. Methods: This study was conducted in 12 hospitals located in geographically and industrially different cities in China. A standard procedure on severe trauma rescue was established as a general rule for staff training and patient treatment. A regional network (system) efficiently integrating prehospital rescue, emergency room treatments, and hospital specialist treatments was built under the rule for information sharing and improving severe trauma treatments. Treatment outcomes were compared between before and 1 year after the implementation of the SRP. Results: The outcomes of a total of 74,615 and 12,051 trauma cases were collected from 12 hospitals before and after the implementation of the SRP. Implementation of the SRP led to efficient cooperation and information sharing of different treatment services. The emergency response time, prehospital transit time, emergency rescue time, consultation call time, and mortality rate of patients were 24.24 ± 4.32 min, 45.69 ± 3.89 min, 6.38 ± 1.05 min, 17.53 ± 0.72 min, and 33.82% ± 3.87% (n = 441), respectively, before the implementation of the standardization and significantly reduced to 10.11 ± 3.21 min, 22.39 ± 4.32 min, 3.26 ± 0.89 min, 3.45 ± 0.45 min, and 20.49% ± 3.11%, separately (n = 495, P < 0.05) after that. Conclusions: Staff training and SRP can significantly improve the efficiency of severe trauma treatments in China.

Gasification of four biomass chars and anthracite char were investigated under a CO2 atmosphere using a thermo-gravimetric analyzer. Reactivity differences of chars were considered in terms of pyrolysis temperature, char types, crystallinity, and inherent minerals. The results show that the gasification reactivity of char decreased with the increase of pyrolysis temperature. Char gasification reactivity followed the order of anthracite coal char (AC-char) ˂ pine sawdust char (PS-char) ˂ peanut hull char (PH-char) ˂ wheat straw char (WS-char) ˂ corncob char (CB-char) under the same pyrolysis temperature. Two repesentative gas-solid models, the random pore model (RPM) and the modified random pore model (MRPM), were applied to describe the reactive behaviour of chars. The results indicate RPM performs well to describe gasification rates of chars but cannot predict the phenomenon that there appears to exist a peak conversion for biomass chars at a high conversion rate, where the MRPM performs better.

Objective To investigate the effect of miR-17-5p expression on the injury of human lung adenocarcinoma alveolar basal epithelial cell line A549 induced by Streptococcus pneumonia and its mechanism. Methods A549 cells was divided into control group,infected group(1×108 CFU/mL S.pneumoniae),anti-miR-17-5p intervention group (transfected with anti-miR-17-5p before S.pneumoniae infection),anti-miR-NC intervention group (transfected with anti-miR-NC before S.pneumoniae infection), and pcDNA-ALDH2 intervention group(trans- fected with pcDNA-ALDH2 before S.pneumoniae infection),and pcDNA intervention group (transfected with pcDNA before S.pneumoniae infection).The level of miR-17-5p and ALDH2 mRNA was detected by RT-qPCR. IL-6 and IL-10 in cell culture supernatant were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. ALDH2, Bcl-2 and Bax protein were detected by Western blot. Dual luciferase assay verified the targeting relationship between miR-17-5p and ALDH2. Results Compared with the control group, the level of miR-17-5p in the infected group was significantly increased (P＜0.05), while mRNA and the protein concentration of ALDH2, IL-10 and Bcl-2 were significantly decreased (P＜0.05). However, apoptotic rate and the levels of IL-6 and Bax were significantly increased (P＜0.05). Compared with the infected+anti-miR-NC group, IL-10 and Bcl-2 in the infected+anti-miR-17-5p group were significantly increased(P＜0.05), the apoptotic rate, IL-6 and Bax were significantly decreased (P＜0.05). Compared with the infected+pcDNA group, the levels of IL-10 and Bcl-2 in the infected+pcDNA-ALDH2 group were significantly increased (P＜0.05), and the apoptotic rate and the levels of IL-6 and Bax were significantly decreased (P＜0.05).miR-17-5p negatively regulated ALDH2 expression.Inhibition of ALDH2 expression reversed the effect of inhibiting miR-17-5p expression on S.pneumoniae-induced A549 cells damage. Conclusions Inhibition of miR-17-5p expression reduces S.pneumoniae-induced the damage of the cell line A549 by regulating ALDH2.
