1. The InfoTective: Evaluating an On-Line Curriculum Framework.

Abstract

This paper reports on the findings from a qualitative case study evaluating an online curriculum framework for high school students. This framework integrates content, context, and technology with primary documents for the "Valley of the Shadow" Civil War Web site. Data were collected through interviews with selected students and the teacher, the students' and teacher's reflective journals, student reports, in-class observation supported by research notes, and evidence of participation in activities. An emergent design was used to analyze the observational and reflective journal data. Findings indicate that students were highly engaged in the activity and obtained a deeper understanding of American Civil War history though a designed reading, writing, and concept mapping instructional activity. 2. Substitute Care Providers: Helping Abused and Neglected Children. The User Manual Series.

Abstract

This manual for child welfare staff and foster/adoptive parents is intended to provide guidelines for serving abused and neglected children who are in family foster care and adoption. The first section is on substitute care and permanency planning and offers an historical perspective on substitute care and definitions of family foster care and adoption. Next, the needs of abused and neglected children are addressed, including basic needs of all children, the special needs of children in substitute care, the special needs of abused/neglected children, and the individual needs of children. A section on systems, networks, and teams examines families as systems, the service network, the child welfare agency, and the substitute care team. Discussed in the section on meeting the needs of abused and neglected children are the assessment process, providing a safe environment, coping with regressive behavior, helping children with feelings of loss and issues of identity, and helping children who have been sexually abused. Next, support for foster parents is addressed in terms of foster home retention, training, and associations. Additional sections consider review and monitoring, a blueprint for family foster care in the 1990s, and issues in adoption for the 1990s. A glossary of terms is provided. Título, resumen, palabras clave en español e ingles Resumen basado en el de la publicación Se describe cómo estudiantes de enfermería expresan niveles de incomodidad visual al leer texto en papel ultrablanco y en papel de color beige, ya sea con iluminación estándar del aula (600 lux; n = 31) o con iluminación reducida (400 lux ; n = 25). Bajo la iluminación estándar, 10 (28%) de los sujetos informaron niveles notables de estrés visual (puntuación ≥ 15 en una escala de1 a 30). Al leer en color beige, el grupo presentó menos malestar en los síntomas. Estas diferencias fueron estadísticamente significativas para cinco síntomas y el total de malestar. Los resultados fueron menos pronunciados para el grupo en la condición de iluminación reducida. Encontrándose que la incomodidad de lectura relacionada con estrés visual también puede afectar a lectores expertos y, además, que simples ajustes a la iluminación y/o medios visuales pueden reducirla. Se discuten las implicaciones para la práctica en entornos educativos y sanitarios. ESP

Abstract

The heat shock response of two strains of the thermophilic yeast Arxiozyma telluris has been studied and has been compared with that of the mesophilic yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A. telluris is found in the digestive tracts of warm-blooded domestic and wild animals and are obligate and facultative saprophytes. Mild heat shock was induced between 35 to 40 degrees C for 30 min for the proteins hsp 104, hsp 90 and hsp 60. Results indicate that the Arxiozyma strains have a heat shock response similar to S. cerevisiae even if the former have a narrow temperature range for growth.
